Council Leader quits

F

erris Cowper has resigned as Leader of East Hampshire District Council (EHDC). The Conservative group, who have denied forcing him out, will now elect a new leader. Their nominee will go to the full Council on 25 November for approval as Leader. Cllr David Parkinson, Deputy Leader, paid tribute to Cllr Cowper. “Under his leadership, the council has secured eco-town status for Whitehill-Bordon, frozen council tax for three years and staged three successful Butserfest music events for young people. He was instrumental in agreeing our pioneering

partnership and shared chief executive with Havant Borough Council. “Looking forward, the council has a strong strategy for facing the challenges of the future. We will continue to implement our council strategy, increase our support for Whitehill-Bordon, develop our new partnership with Havant, and provide the best possible services for local residents. Grayshott’s councillor since 1999, Ferris Cowper was Finance Portfolio Holder before becoming Leader in May 2006.

Charity trek

S

taff, friends and guests from Champneys Health resorts have taken part in a charity trek along the Inca Trail in Peru. Sixteen people trekked to Machu Picchu and raised money for the Silver Star Appeal, a charity set up by Keith Vaz MP to offer a free mobile unit for diabetes testing, which will visit workplaces and housing estates. The party travelled with Across The Divide, which has created a unique route which only they have permission to use, away from the hustle and bustle of the main 4

Inca Trail. “We walked through hidden valleys, mountain passes ]X \W U PQOP ITWVO TWVO forgotten Inca trails, said Philippa Thompson, from Champneys Forest Mere, “and through small villages where little has changed and they still follow traditional methods of farming. We camped

for six nights, and it wasn't so much the distance as the altitude that was the challenge – the longest day’s walk was 10 ½ hours.â€? The Champneys Charitable Foundation supports disability charities within the local areas of their resorts. And Champneys Forest Mere has various fundraising activities, including open evenings where friends, guests and local residents can enjoy treatments from ÂŁ10. The next is on 10 December; and there is a charity Christmas dinner on Saturday 12 December at ÂŁ30 per person. Champneys (Laura), ! L

his year the style is easy-going, and the key point for Christmas and New Year parties will be feminine and obviously pretty. Purple, grey and berry are among the season’s fashion colours, eye-catching on the back, maybe embellished with a chignon. For Tina Wheeler at Nutmeg, “Purple is the key colour of the season, working well in knitwear and as an accent colour to the ever popular black. Grey also features strongly less severe than black – and gentle grey is the most versatile of autumn’s neutral shades.” She adds that prints seem to be subtle,

delicate and feminine and “sit alongside more bold and graphic prints but both still with a vintage feel”. And chunky and long-length knits are popular, worn layered over jeans or belted with boots and leggings. Jersey dresses and kaftan-style knits also “feature strongly - load on the layers and ÅVQ[P WNN _Q\P I KW[a [KIZN º At Twenty the High Street, cerise pink is the in colour for your festive evenings out. *]\ QN aW] LWV¼\ NMMT [W LIZQVO aW] KIV ÅVL pretty stuff in grey, purple, black or bright blue as well. If a dress is not suitable, you can wear skinny jeans and a “boyfriend” jacket; the must-have jeans are black with a splash of white by Jbrand. Tiger Rose in the High Street has many ideas, for everyday and for parties. Colours for this season range from pink to red, and from green to grey, with a lot of patterned clothes. Try a colour change from the usual dark tints. A velvet plum dress goes with tight jeans or leggings for a free and easy look. You can adapt it to suit the occasion. For instance it might look amazing if worn with high heels. That could really make you feel wonderful! We Italians on the staff of 4QNM QV 8M\MZ[ÅMTL also love the sober black low-necked dresses, Issue 19 November/December 2009

Convert a Swimming Pool the Natural Way

No chemicals. No salt. Just clean and clear water. Clear Water Revival (CWR) is the largest organisation specialising in the design and build of Natural Swimming Pools, and is now working locally with Graduate Landscapes, in Petersfield and throughout Hampshire, to build and convert existing chlorine pools or derelict water spaces into natural eco pools that really enhance the outdoor living space, and at the same time reduce maintenance and running costs. The pools are based upon a tried and tested filtration system which harnesses nature’s processes with micro-organisms and plants to balance the water chemistry, maintaining clean, clear and hygienic conditions all year round without the need for chlorine or salt.

CWR’s pool system can be retrospectively fitted to offer home owners or commercial operations an eco friendly atlternative to costly and time consuming traditional chlorine pools, or redundant water spaces. Working with the support of a team of scientists, ecological engineers, and sustainability consultants at CWR, Graduate Landscapes has a wealth of knowledge to create a pool that meets both budget and design requirements. “We are seeing a growing awareness and desire to pursue a more green and organic lifestyle, and intergrating Clear Water Revival pools into our portfolio meets this demand by maintaining a chemical free environment, helping to conserve natural resources and at the same time enhancing wildlife value in both rural and urban gardens”. Tony Richards, Director Graduate Landscapes Ltd If you are keen to test the exhilarating swimming experience in a natural pool why not attend the next Clear Water Revival Discovery Day with Graduate Landscapes - visit the website for details NOW!

Dispelling some myths surrounding natural swimming pools: Heating: All pool types can be heated up to 28 degrees if desired, which is often not possible with a ‘swimming pond’ system, however the pools generally require less heating due to darker lining colours and to passive solar heating from the shallower water areas required for the plant zone. Costs: Ongoing maintenance costs are reduced without the need for chlorine, and energy costs are significantly reduced compared to a traditional pool because the pumps are a lot smaller and heating is assisted by passive solar heating. Hygiene: CWR pool water is so clean you can drink it - latest water samples show the pool water is in line with, if not cleaner, than mineral water! Swimming Pool or Swimming Pond: By using an efficient bio-filter, the water chemistry in a CWR pool is stabilised with minimal changes in water conditions throughout the year. In comparison, a ‘swimming pond’ system works in very much the same way as the development of a wild or garden pond, and relies solely on the plants to filter the water as the pond matures. 11

Negotiating your own agreement can be cheapest; however whilst this may www.macdonaldoates.co.uk work with some couples with high levels of trust and communication (even here legal advice is desirable); it is not for everyone. Most couples require some assistance in reaching a fair and workable solution.

Q. What is Mediation? independent and neutral mediator who can help resolve all issues, relating to ďŹ nances or children. A mediated agreement is only legally binding once it has been checked by the couples’ lawyers.

Q. What about Collaborative Law? A. Collaborative law is a new dispute resolution process, similar to mediation in that round table negotiations are involved; however each party has THEIR OWN LAWYER PRESENT AT THE MEETINGS GIVING ADVICE AND SUPPORT 4HE couple agree to resolve matters out of court. If the process breaks down, THEY MUST INSTRUCT NEW LAWYERS 4HIS IS A POWERFUL INCENTIVE ON MAKING THE negotiations work.

The Life of Brian

Charles Collingwood (above), who has played Brian Aldridge in The Archers on BBC radio for 34 years, talks to Geraldine Keith about his part in the radio blockbuster IVL ZMIT TQNM VMIZ 8M\MZ[ÅMTL

A

s an enthusiastic Archers’ fan for about as long as Charles Collingwood has been on it, I was eager for the meeting in One Tree Books with the man behind one of radio’s most longstanding characters. He lives with his wife, the actress Judy Bennett, in a picturesque hamlet close to 8M\MZ[ÅMTL 0Q[ JWWS Brian and Me, Life on – and off – The Archers, is written in the same easy way he talks, somewhat self-depracatingly and always full of humour. Several things shine out of Charles’s book. His family is the foundation stone for his life; he has had a life-long passion for cricket, and was once a playing member of the MCC; and he loves the entertainment business. He is a consummate all-round entertainer; an actor of stage, screen and recording studio and an accomplished after-dinner speaker and quiz show panellist. If his life sounds blessed (and he certainly has had his share of luck) perhaps it is because he makes light of the bad and dwells on the positive. He has made 18

Charles Collingwood (right) with Tim O’Kelly at his book signing at One Tree Books good choices in life, describing himself as “not ambitious, but quite calculating!” In the early seventies bouts of unemployment knocked his KWVÅLMVKM IVL PM [\Z]OOTML to make a living – he worked as a domestic cleaner and a greengrocer among other things. )VL PQ[ ÅZ[\ [PWZ\ UIZZQIOM ended in divorce. These events are all recalled with great honesty and

as positive an outlook as Charles could muster. But then in 1971 Charles met and fell in love with Judy Bennett (aka Shula Hebdon Lloyd in The Archers). Judy was recently divorced and bringing up her two young boys, Toby and Barney, in north London. Charles and Judy were married in 1976 and their beloved daughter Jane was born in 1979. It was through Judy playing

Shula that Charles got a small part in The Archers, as Dave Escott a dodgy paint salesman but I couldn’t remember Dave. “Well I’m not surprised,” said Charles. “It was only a six-month contract. He couldn’t have stayed – he was a crook!” But playing Dave Escott did Charles a great service – it showed what Charles could do and, as a result, he was offered the part of Brian. “I was told ‘You are going to marry Jennifer Archer!’ “Of course it was the most marvellous opportunity for me because Brian was a totally new character arriving on the scene and marrying into the central family. Jennifer Travers-Macy (née Archer) had returned to Ambridge when her marriage failed, with two children, Adam and Debbie. (Funny how life can imitate art!). I thought, ‘I could really do something with this’.” It was decided that Brian had lost both his parents and inherited a lot of money which enabled him to buy 2,000 acres of prime Borsetshire farm land. And so began the life of Brian and his 30+ year marriage to Jennifer. *ZQIV Q[ IV QVKZMLQJTa [MTÅ[P character yet their marriage has survived his dreadful philandering, an affair which led to a baby, and even accepted his lovechild into her home. Charles agrees, “Yes, she has put up with some dreadful behaviour from Brian, but she doesn’t want to give up what she’s got now – her lovely home, the foreign holidays and her status in the village. She’s got a lot to lose.” So Charles Collingwood and Brian Aldridge sound like the same man (and the voices are identical – if you hear Charles speak you will say ‘that’s Brian Aldridge’). But that is where the similarity ends. The book is crammed with marvellous anecdotes about Archers’ life; the cast behind the voices we know so well; how to QUQ\I\M I Å^M JIZ OI\M _Q\P IV ironing board; and how a bucket of tape and a pot of yoghurt can be used to create the sound of a ewe struggling to deliver a lamb. Charles Collingwood is immensely proud of The Archers and the part he plays in it – after all it is the longest ever running soap, and still today has over 5 million listeners. Brian and Me, by Charles Collingwood is published by Michael O’Mara Books (£20)

GARDENING

10 winter tips

Growing for growth TV and radio gardening guru Pippa Greenwood has launched a the new vegetable growing package

T

he new Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood package helps gardeners with plots large and small to grow their own vegetables from quality plants, delivered direct to their door. The low cost and high quality of the plants supplied can make this a cost-effective option, even for experienced vegetable growers. Gardeners can choose which vegetables to grow and then get weekly email advice from Pippa about the plants they have chosen. She will provide photographs, showing how to do everything – from preparing NWZ \PM IZZQ^IT WN \PM ÅZ[\ XTIV\[ to planting out, to thinning and pinching-out, and right through to harvest. And, if you have any concerns or queries, you can get free, personal advice from the ‘Ask Pippa’ online service. Pippa is a ‘grow your own’ guru, having grown her own vegetables since she was a child, and written many books and articles about kitchen gardening. She says: “Whilst growing your own vegetables is not hard, the snippets of advice about how and where to plant vegetables that

28

you get on the back of a seed packet, or on plant labels, are not []NÅKQMV\ \W MV[]ZM aW] PI^M I reliably successful crop of vegetables. “Similarly, scouring through books for all the information you need (which may not be appropriate to the area you live in or the variety you are growing) is just not realistic for most people’s ‘time-starved’ lifestyles. In the current economic climate, I want to make growing your own vegetables simple and straightforward for everyone so that they can save money, eat delicious, nutritious food and have some ‘low cost’ outdoor fun

at the same time.” Based on her experience with her own children, and having successfully introduced ‘grow your own’ in her children’s school, Pippa has found that young people are far more receptive to trying new vegetables when they have grown and picked them themselves. She hopes that her combination of great plants and great advice will encourage teachers around the country to introduce children to growing, and eating their own vegetables in 2010. Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com.

Make sure that greenhouse insulation is well secured, or nasty and damaging cold drafts could injure plants inside. Drafts mean lower temperatures and potentially much higher fuel bills! Check any large trees in or around your garden and make sure that they do not contain any broken or hanging branches resulting from rough weather. Call in a professional tree surgeon to carry out all work, as chainsaws can be lethal in inexperienced hands. Take cuttings from perpetual ÆW_MZQVO KIZVI\QWV[ +PWW[M 8 cm long side shoots from ÆW_MZQVO [\MU[ IVL ZWW\ \PMU in silver sand in a propagator at about 16°C (60 °F). If weather and soil conditions permit (only likely on very well drained sites!) continue to dig over spare ground and prepare for planting. If the soil is wet, stay off it to avoid causing compaction. Minimise further wind damage to roses by shortening their stems to about 75cm (30in). This helps to prevent wind rock, and then you can complete the pruning in March. Use cloches to warm up the ground, and then, on welldrained sites, make further plantings of winter lettuce, protecting these with cloches. Regularly remove faded and _MI\PMZ LIUIOML ÆW_MZ[ NZWU _QV\MZ ÆW_MZQVO bedding plants such as pansies so that the plants continue to produce more blooms. Lift and store the last of the crop of late sown carrots. If left in the ground they will be prone to splitting and attack by slugs. )[ \PM K]ZL[ WV KI]TQÆW_MZ[ develop, make sure that they are not damaged by the weather – no need to buy in special protection, just bend the surrounding leaves over the curds and they provide perfect protection. If you buy a Christmas tree, don’t bring it into the house too soon. Instead cut the end of the trunk again and stand it in a bucket of water in a wind sheltered spot in the garden. ituated right on the path of the South Downs Way above East Meon in 55 acres of woodland opposite the former HMS Mercury, the Sustainability Centre has a mission to educate children, young people and adults in sustainable living and environmental issues. The centre attracted about 15,000 people in 2008. The centre attracts pupils from schools across the south east, and provides structured programmes in sustainable landscapes, awareness of nature, and climate change issues. It also works with children in disadvantaged areas, including Portsmouth. Mary Lewis, who took over as Centre Manager 18 months ago, said: “The focus of the centre is on education – to young people aged from 4 to 18, and also to adults – and we are expanding our range of opportunities, W]Z NIKQTQ\QM[ IVL W]Z [\INN ?M IZM Ă…VIVKQITTa sound and we don’t rely on grant funding.â€? This expansion is aided by a substantial bequest from the Mamie Mollan Trust. “Mamie was a local writer and artist who _I[ XI[[QWVI\M IJW]\ \PM JMVMĂ…\[ \PI\ nature holds for health and well-being,â€? Bryan Farley, of the Mamie Mollan Trust, explained. “The centre is an oasis of tranquillity, with an ecological ethos that chimes perfectly with Mamie’s own vision.â€?

In October the centre held an open day to display its “exciting new projectsâ€?, including a new timber-framed outdoor classroom, the development of its hostel, and eco-cabins in the woods to accommodate children and adults on courses. Mary Lewis said: “The new outdoor classroom will help with our programme for teaching environmental crafts, skills and storytelling.â€? Constructed under the guidance of Ben Law, the new open-sided building will be open for use next year. The other facilities include the hostel, which also provides accommodation for training; a new cafĂŠ; and a natural burial site. The hostel has 36 beds and there are plans to convert it into a modern training facility. Mary Lewis reckons that the Sustainability Centre cafĂŠ is the last one on the South Downs Way between Winchester and Eastbourne and Birlings Gate, near Beachy Head; and she says that the natural burial site is proving increasingly popular. The centre has another big open day on 9 May next year when it stages its annual Green Fair. Sustainability Centre, Droxford Road, -I[\ 5MWV VZ 8M\MZ[Ă…MTL /= 0: 01730 823166

self-confessed scaredy-cat of all things wild – from spiders to snakes – I was slightly nervous at the thought of spending a few hours at one with nature. But the Red Deer courses now available at Cowdray are full of useful information, fun activities and lots of team building. The courses are designed to show individuals, groups or families how to enjoy the great outdoors by teaching natural bushcraft, wild-foods foraging, wildlife observation, cooking and recreationcamping skills. And pleasingly one of the underlying messages that Ian Spicer, Director of Red Deer, hammers home is how to preserve your natural surroundings – using low environmental impact techniques. On our taster course Ian showed us the impact a small ground sheet could have on the natural landscape – the results of which were quite astounding. In light of this we were shown how to make a low impact shelter. Red Deer consists of a team of specialist outdoorsmen whose combined knowledge 30

and experience covers an unprecedented range of outdoor subjects. In the short time we spent with Red Deer, we were shown how to build shelter, forage for safe foods on the NWZM[\ ÆWWZ UISM ÅZM SMMX PaLZI\ML IVL _IZU IVL KWWS NZWU I \ZILQ\QWVIT ÅZM IVL stove, using only basic ingredients to make a tasty meal. All of this was presented to us in a fun and friendly manner, and Ian interacted with us at ease, making this not only an opportunity to learn new skills and about the local environment, but also a great social activity for any type of group of people. And let’s not forget the simply stunning surroundings that we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep. A true sanctuary for mind, body and soul. n late autumn 2009, one of the favourite spots for a winter break and some rays of cheering sunshine is Egypt. “It is a very good place for winter sunshine with temperatures between 20 and 25C, although, of course, there are fewer hours of sun,â€? said Fiona Jeffery, 5IVIOMZ WN *I\P <ZI^MT QV 8M\MZ[Ă…MTL 0QOP Street. T

he Trooper Inn has appeared in the main section of The Good Pub Guide for the last 14 years. The 2010 guide sums up the inn perfectly, describing Sandor Kis (Alex) as a “charming landlordâ€? and the friendly pub as resplendent with “Persian knick-knacksâ€?. There is certainly something unique and special about The Trooper. Visitors and locals get a warm welcome, and they know they will receive excellent service from the owner Hassan Matini and his loyal staff. The Head Chef is Sarah (Hassan’s wife) who along with her stunt double Elia has cooked at The Trooper for seven years. ___ TQNMQVXM\MZ[Ă…MTL KW ]S

The only items to change regularly at The Trooper are the menus and the beer. The inn always offers regular favourites such as mussels, steak and shoulder of lamb. While Hassan is proud of The Trooper’s independence as a pub – “we have served over 950 beers in 14 yearsâ€? – Ringwood Best Bitter is a constant. He also believes in sourcing the food locally in the 8M\MZ[Ă…MTL IZMI _PMZM^MZ XW[[QJTM The inn is also a hotel with eight bedrooms. “We are always spending money to improve the facilities,â€? says Hassan. Reputed to date from the 17th century, The Trooper’s name may derive from the start of the First

World War when the pub was used as a recruiting centre for troops. Open for food from Monday evening to Sunday lunchtime, The Trooper offers a highly popular ‘pie and pudding’ evening for ÂŁ10 on Tuesdays. Another perk is that people with birthdays and anniversaries get a free drink.

Now Hassan is introducing a special 10 per cent discount for the over-60s for meals on Monday to Thursdays. In any case, The Trooper will remain I Ă…ZU NI^W]ZQ\M NWZ XMWXTM WN all ages. The Trooper Inn .ZW`Ă…MTL 8M\MZ[Ă…MTL ! L
