Follow the Olympic flame The London 2012 organisers LOCOG have revealed the Olympic Torch will arrive in Petersfield at 8.30am on Monday 16 July. The torch will take approximately half an hour to travel through the town, before leaving Hampshire and heading towards West Sussex. The Torch, which travels in two modes – Convoy mode or Torchbearer mode – will arrive from Portsmouth at The Causeway in Convoy mode. This means the Olympic Flame will not be on display. Once at the start point, it will switch to Torchbearer mode and the Flame will be carried through the streets of Petersfield and become available for the public to see. The Flame will be carried by Torchbearers along The Causeway, into Dragon Street, before turning onto the High Street, then continuing through Chapel Street. At the end of Chapel Street the Torch will then turn right into Station Road and up through Ramshill before ending this leg of the journey, near Churcher’s College.
The Olympic Flame will then revert back to Convoy mode and depart to the next destination. To view the street level route through Petersfield you can visit www.easthants.gov. uk/ehdc/2012.nsf/webpages/Torch+Relay

Happy camper Petersfield School pupil, Will Grange, has successfully completed his year long fundraising camp. The 13-year-old Scout spent every night in the great outdoors in a bid to raise money for the Sheet Scouts Hut Appeal Fund.

Sleeping through snow, rain, gales and temperatures as low as -10 c, Will raised an impressive £2,700 for the Scouts. When asked how he found his first night back in a bed Will said, “I felt way too hot - I am now sleeping without the duvet! The first night back in my bed I kept almost falling out of bed when I rolled over!” Will hasn’t decided what his next challenge will be but if anything exciting comes up he will definitely consider it. “I would like to thank all the generous people who donated to the Scout Hut Fund and also gave me fantastic support during my camping year.”

process, and were delighted to be awarded a grant of £60,000 towards the renovation of their building in Heath Road. With an additional £20,000 raised themselves, the refurbishment work has now started and should be completed by 4 May. In recognition of this, their Artistic Director, Nik Ashton, was invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party this spring. The invitation was for two, and it was decided that he should be accompanied by the oldest PYT member, Alex Bushell. With strict dress rules in place, Alex and Nik scour the PYT wardrobe for suitable outfits, though a jacket from the recent production of ‘Les Misérables’ will probably not meet the ‘uniform’ criteria! Picture Petersfield Petersfield Tourist Information Centre is running a photographic competition to celebrate Petersfield’s 2012 events. To enter, simply submit your entry before the 7 May to the centre. The winning 12 photographs will be used in a calendar for 2013. “The photographs should illustrate a view within Petersfield or one of its surrounding villages and must capture an aspect of the historical or cultural heritage of the area,” Graham Haynes of East Hampshire Tourist Information Centre explains. “A prize will be awarded for each of the 12 winning photographs and winners will be announced during the Jubilee celebrations.” Entry forms are available from the Petersfield Tourist Information Centre. Strings Bonanza Saturday 24 March saw the Petersfield Area Schools’ String Orchestra host a massive Strings Bonanza. The musical event featured performances from over 160 string players at the Petersfield Festival Hall in a celebration of youthful string playing, in Petersfield and South East Hampshire. PASSO and other individual ensembles, which included the Hampshire String Training orchestra, the South East Strings and the Alton Mini Vs, each performed a short programme to show case their talents. This was followed by all 160 players joining together in an extraordinary finale to perform Caribbean Capers (a calypso written by Bonanza organiser Gideon Baker) and Palladio by Karl Jenkins. To a packed Festival Hall, this truly formed the climax of “a crescendo of festivals” for PASSO, a youth orchestra who this year represents 16 schools from the Petersfield and Meon Valley area. The 16 June will also see the PASSO Playday in the studio at TPS. Here the orchestra will play host to German-born violinist Sara Deborah Struntz and her Italian husband and pianist Alessandro Timossi. This internationally renowned duo will give a lunchtime recital at 12.45pm, which will be open to the public as well as providing inspiration for the young string players of PASSO and a fantastic opportunity for them to witness a world class string player at first hand. 01730 267341, www.passo.hampshire.org.uk

Petersfield will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style with a full day of events on Monday 4 June 2012 In the morning there will be 60 cars and 60 motor bikes, all British, covering the Queen’s lifetime. They will be on show in The Square and High Street. At 11.15am there will be a formal ceremony in The Square and a capsule will be buried for 100 years beneath a specially created mosaic. After the formalities bands will entertain and there will be time to find lunch in the town centre. At around 2pm a procession of residents in 1950’s costume will set off for The Heath,
where a traditional fete will be in full swing with lots of stalls, tug-of-war competitions and a raft race. There will also be a parade of vehicles around the Town at 2.30pm, with many of the vehicles finishing on The Heath. On The Heath in the evening there will be dancing to a large band with a programme of 40s and 50s music. The bar will be open and there will be a hog roast. As darkness falls at about 10pm a procession of specially made lanterns will make its way around the Heath Pond and,
as the procession ends, there will be a blazing tribute to the Queen on the Pond. Hundreds of lanterns will be made in local schools in the weeks leading up to Jubilee Day. Adults, families, workplace or community groups wishing to make lanterns are invited to an open workshop. Crispy Jubilee Chicken with sweet corn frittas and lemon mayonnaise served with saffron rice Ingredients Crispy chicken sticks Corn fed chicken breasts x 2 Desiccated coconut x 250gm Flaked almonds 100 gm Sesame seeds 1 tbs Cashew nuts 100gm (roughly chopped ) Jamaican jerk spices White bread crumbs (approx 1/4 of a loaf ) Eggs x 2 Plain flour Vegetable oil for deep frying The dip 1 tbsp Mayonnaise 3 tbsp Creme fraiche Squeeze of Lemon juice to taste Sweet corn frittas Sweetcorn on the cob x 2 or 200gm Fresh Coriander Spring onions x 6 finely chopped Chilli x1 med spice (personal choice) Chives 2 tbsp Plain flour 100gm Baking powder 1 tbsp 1x Egg Seasoning Method Crispy chicken sticks First clean the chicken and discard any fat. Then cut the chicken breast crossways into strips roughly thumb size and generously coat in the Jamaican jerk spices and season with salt. Once this is done feed the chicken strips onto wooden skewers length ways (no more than 2 per skewer. ) If you don’t have skewers don’t worry they are just as good without!! Now place the breadcrumbs, nuts, sesame seeds and coconut into a bowl. Take 2 shallow dishes and place the whisked eggs into one and the flour into the other. Roll the chicken pieces in flour then egg and then the crumb mix and finally squeezing with your

hand to mould the crumbs to the chicken. Place in the fridge for at least 1/2 hr if you can. Sweet corn frittas Sift the flour, baking powder and seasoning into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre, add the egg and then gradually beat in the milk to form a smooth batter. Then you can add the herbs, spring onions and chilli if you want. Place in the fridge until you are ready to use. The dip Now you can make the dip. In the photo the chef used a home made sweet chilli and roasted red pepper dip but in truth he thinks the lemon works better! So just mix the mayo, creme fraiche, squeeze of lemon juice and season. Again cover in cling film and place in the fridge till you need it. (another nice idea is to serve with fresh mango and lime salsa) Cooking Firstly cook the chicken as it will take longer. This can be done on a baking tray in the oven at about 200c with a generous drizzle of oil or, for better results, deep fry or shallow fry in a frying pan. There needs to be plenty of oil to get the crispy effect but please be careful!! For the sweet corn frittas either deep fry at about 170c or use a frying pan like the chicken. Using a tablespoon scoop out the mix into the fryer. They will probably take about 2-3 mins per side and should be light an fluffy due to the baking powder. Check one first to see they are cooked through? Finally, pour yourself a nice glass of crisp dry white wine or a cold beer and tuck into a jubilee feast!! Fomuse, www.fomuse.com

As summer approaches gardening expert Pippa Greenwood shares her top gardening tips this will help to conserve vital moisture. Watch out for earwigs munching holes in the petals of clematis – if they are a real nuisance, trap them using the traditional method of upturned flower pots stuffed full of straw or shredded paper and placed on top of canes close to the plants. Before they fade, foliar feed the leaves of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs with a suitable fertiliser. This will help to give them a boost and should improve flowering next year. As soon as the risk of frosts (and hail!) is past, give house-plants a holiday and place them in a warm, sheltered spot in the garden. Keep them fed and watered regularly and they’ll really benefit from the fresh air. When flowers fade on herbaceous perennials remove them so that energy is not wasted on seed formation – this should encourage more flowers later on and keep the plant itself really sturdy. Keep on feeding and deadheading bedding plants in pots, baskets and other containers so that plenty more flowers develop. If the roses have faded then dead head
these too, cutting them back to leafy growth. If left in place grey mould often develops on the stem and flowering is inhibited. As soon as they are good and plump, cut the heads from globe artichokes – they taste best if cut when good and plump but before the scales toughen and start to open. In June take cuttings from favourite penstemons and helianthemums and root them in a sandy cuttings compost. Swap cuttings with friends for an even better display next year. Weigelas and philadelphus which have finished flowering can be pruned – cut out all the stems that have just flowered and leave the new growth in place.

itcham Park musicians have been in the spotlight and picking up silverware along the way. At the Portsmouth Music Festival the Junior Choir,
Senior Choir and Barbershop Group, led by Head of Music, Mr Ed Williamson and Music Teachers Ms Cox and Mrs Jones, impressed judges with their singing winning a host of awards. Head of Music Ed Williamson said, “I am so proud of all who took part and as you can imagine delighted with what the pupils achieved. It was truly a great weekend for the DPS singers and DPS!” Following this success the musicians took part in a lunchtime recital at St Peter’s Church in Petersfield. ear Three from Churcher’s College Junior School went eco-friendly earlier this month when they visited the Sustainability Centre. “It was an ideal opportunity for the children to learn about the 3Rs – reduce, recycle and reuse and see renewable energy first hand,” said Mrs. Munro. The children saw how solar energy and wind turbines are used and the different ways to be eco friendly by using natural resources for building homes – like wood, straw bales, lime plastering. The class also visited a working yurt which uses energy from solar panels and a wood burner. roxfield Infant School has gone into egg production. As they eagerly awaited their chicken to lay its first eggs, the pupils’ patience finally paid off with the arrival of two small, pale blue eggs. Bluebell was one of four Bantam chicks hatched at school in the autumn term (her three brothers found other homes amongst the staff), while Daffodil came to the school as a pullet or young hen. Animals were high on the list when the children talked about how best to use the school’s outdoor space. They are involved in all aspects of their care, from choosing names to feeding and mucking out. “This is such a rich and absorbing experience for the children,” says Mrs Sue Barry, Headteacher. he Royal School’s Daycare and Nursery children enjoyed three special visitors recently. The first visitor was PC Simpkin, a policeman at Heathrow Airport, who told the children about his job and gave them the chance to try on his hats. The second visitors were Mr and Mrs Painter, both paramedics, who brought their ambulance to show the children. The children then learnt about their jobs, got to go inside the ambulance and hear the siren. Petersfield Presents Petersfield hosts Life in Petersfield’s fifth annual Life in Petersfield Business and Community Awards
T
he people of Petersfield gathered to celebrate the best of Petersfield with the fifth Life in Petersfield Business and Community Awards on Friday 30 March at the Festival Hall. Top winners included Colin Smith, the Personality of the Year; Charlie Day, the Young Achiever of the Year; and the Petersfield Food Festival, the Event of the Year, which was decided on the night by public vote. The exciting event, sponsored by East Hampshire District Council, featured fantastic performances from Petersfield Academy of Dance; the Petersfield School; Churchers Jazz Band; and Petersfield Youth Theatre. Each of the winners and highly commended in 15 categories were greeted by a cheering sell-out crowd and a fun evening was had by all. Host Karen Sheppard, Regional

Goodwood Festival of Speed This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will see the first appearance of double F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel. Sebastian joins a line up of top drivers attending the festival, including his team-mate Mark Webber and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes World Champions, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. The fun event from the 28 June - 1 July will also bring together a selection of vehicles to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. All vehicles will have a direct connection with Her Majesty, with most
never or rarely seen in public before. These will range from formal state limousines, through to personal cars, an aircraft and even a royal train carriage. The Festival of Speed will also be honouring the Lotus, celebrating the company’s past, present and future with the main Central Feature ‘installation’ outside Goodwood House, plus at least 50 significant Lotus race and road cars in action and on display during the festival weekend. Cowdray Park Polo Club returns Cowdray Park Polo Club has opened its 2012 season with an exciting programme all set for the summer. The new programme will feature low, medium and high goal polo and the introduction of two new tournaments at four and six goal level. Celebrating centenaries The West Meon Chamber Music Festival will feature works by two leading French composers this year, both with key anniversaries in 2012. Firstly 23 May marks the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Jean Françaix (1912-1997). Françaix was an accomplished pianist, winning the coveted First Prize in Piano at the Paris Conservatoire when he was 18 and writing numerous piano pieces. He also produced many chamber works and at the West Meon Festival the string players of the Primrose Piano Quartet will perform Françaix’s trio written in 1933. at the West Meon Festival is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Claude Debussy (1862-1918). Debussy was a key figure in the Impressionist movement and his evocative pieces such as Clair de Lune and La Mer are among the most popular in the repertoire. Among the works by Debussy to be performed at the West Meon Chamber Music Festival, are his Cello Sonata, Violin Sonata and Petite Suite for piano duet. Japanese day at Petersfield Community Centre
The popular Japanese Day will return to Petersfield for the third year running, bringing the culture, food and traditions of Japan to local residents. Organised by a small educational children’s group, ‘Kowasabi’, the event will be held at 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, 24 June, at Petersfield Community Centre. Originally started to raise funds to support the Kowasabi group, last year the group’s event coincided with the Tsunami tragedy. Local people rallied to the cause and a total of over £3,000 was raised for the Red Cross Appeal. This year they will be sending a percentage of monies to the Tsunami appeal but don’t want to mislead visitors. The main fundraising aim is for the group itself. The event will offer hands-on activities such as the delicate art of calligraphy, under the careful tuition of Japanese hosts. You can have a go at Origami, join a quiet, traditional tea ceremony and watch displays of marshal arts, Karate and Kendou. Also available will be Sushi and Japanese style bread and cut meats to taste and buy.

Festival fever The May Bank Holiday weekend will see the first ever spring festival come to Petersfield. Following on from the success of the summer festival the spring festival is set to be bigger and better. The three-day event will see music on stage in the square starting at 6pm on the Saturday evening, a whole day of entertainment on the Sunday from 10am till 10pm and a final day of entertainment on Monday from 10am till 6pm. Spinning for Sport Relief The Navigate team cycled the extra mile for Sports Relief. A half-hour charity spin at the Taro Centre was organised by the local firm. Spinning instructor Andy Ranson kindly gave his time to lead the class. Dressed to thrill and armed with plenty of water, the team completed the challenge, managing to prove that they are capable of more than just helping clients. Navigate clients and friends of the company gave generously, and they managed to beat their initial fundraising target of £100 and raised £370. Careand Compassion In wards and care homes throughout the country, hard-pressed staff try and cope with patients with dementia without adequate training, and often without sufficient information about the patients in their care. The health care training provider, FAST healthcare believes appropriate training is essential to combat the care problems in the UK and recently launched an online interactive e-learning initiative “Caring Well for People with dementia.” Created by a leading specialist, Dr Ann Marshall of the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, the course is available to both singleusers, so anybody caring for people with dementia, or as a multi-user system ready to be absorbed into a hospital or care home training facility. Richard Norrie from e-learning healthcare provider FAST healthcare shared an example of what can happen when staff are not properly trained, “John, 84, suffering from Alzheimer’s, who was admitted to hospital, normally sociable and “pleasantly confused” became very disorientated and unsteady on his feet and tried to leave his bed area. After being told to remain seated, staff eventually put him in a recliner chair and tipped it backward to restrain him. Distressed and not knowing what to do he threw a cup on to the floor and was shouted at by the shocked staff.” When asked about the recent Ombudsman report, Paul Tarsey, Group Managing Director, Bluebird Care said: “The sooner that everyone stops talking about the ageing population as ‘a problem’ and starts looking at just what we can do to improve the quality of their care, the better. These are people first and foremost and deserve to receive the very best which we, as a nation, can do for them. At Bluebird Care we have seen a huge surge in the number of people who want to buy a more comprehensive service privately. By doing this they are able to specify exactly what they want and also to choose to have additional services such as 36

a trip to the shops or a day out as well as having somebody to look after the house or take care of the laundry.” Family run Eastfield Nursing Home believes it is a system failure that has led to the care problems we are currently suffering in the UK. Dr Dennis Greenwood, Eastfield Nursing Home explains, “I would argue that it is potentially the failure of a ‘systems’ approach to providing care that was responsible for these cases of mistreatment. Where the emphasis in a care setting is directed towards implementing and maintaining the system of care, individuals working and being treated within this type of system become objectified. Compassion and care are terms associated with people and not objects, so the real challenge for health professionals is to maintain a care setting that is focused on the responsibility of treating ‘people’ and not inanimate parts of a care-less system.“ Two Petersfield Milkwood Care homes are also currently involved in initiatives to improve the lives of those living with mental health disorders and dementia. Working closely with health professionals the homes hope to reduce the use of AntiPsychotic drugs. These drugs are used to treat behavioural symptoms and the reduction of their use can help to increase awareness, improve interaction and make for a happier environment. “We are absolutely fed up with the negative press that care homes get. All of the staff we employ work very hard to give the best possible care for the elderly and frail in our homes, and it can be most depressing to constantly read of things going wrong” Milkwood director Janet Lloyd Leech said. “We ensure that all of our staff, even the gardeners, receive dementia training. We recognise the problems that residents and their families have in dealing with the onset of dementia, and we work hard to ensure that we deal with these problems with compassion.”

Posture and pain Most of us know bad posture and bone movement can lead to aches and pains. However, this can also be the route to other health conditions such as migraines, digestive problems and period pain. We stay for coffee or refreshments after the walks at different hostelries in town.
