Hampshire County Council have now approved plans for Froxfield Infants School to become a Primary from September 2013. Governors at the school have been working hard on the proposal and consultation stages over the last twelve months and this decision has been met with a great sense of relief at the school. Parents of children in the current Year Two are now able to rest assured that their children can remain at the school for another four years. The school will be able to take up to 12 pupils in each year group, thus making a maximum of 84 children across years Reception to Year Six. The school is keen to retain the character of a small, friendly community where pupils feel secure and are enabled to develop their independence. Froxfield Infants School, 01730 827251

Liss based, Daisy Macdonald, has recently won the children’s TV channel’s, CITV, Share a Story competition. The eight year old won the national competition for her story The Possessed Pants. As part of the prize for Daisy was invited to the CITV studios to watch her story get transformed into a film to be aired on the CITV channel. Unbeknown to the competition organizers, Daisy has followed in the footsteps of her illustrious ancestors. Two of her late great (a few times over) uncles, were the principal members of the Warne family – Frederick Warne & Co – publishers of all Beatrix Potter’s books. For those who know the Potter story, Beatrix would probably have married Norman Warne if he hadn’t died. Daisy’s 5 x Gt. uncle’s wife, is also Elizabeth Gaskell, author of great works including The Cranford Diaries.

No Valentine should be left empty handed and when it comes to presents jewellery and Valentine’s has always been a match made in heaven. Petersfield jewellery expert and happily married, Jill Towner says, “Whilst Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the world by couples in love with the exchanging of gifts, which include flowers or chocolates, nothing says “I love you” like a thoughtfully chosen piece of jewellery. Perhaps for 2013 loving husbands in marriages that have stood the test of time may consider giving the lady in their lives a gift this Valentine’s Day to say thank you for all the love and care. In my relationship with Trevor, even after all these years, we still keep to the tradition of celebrating our love for each other by exchanging cards and gifts on Valentine’s Day. I also decorate the reception rooms at home with heart shaped designs and make a special display for the dinner table.” For those looking for an alternative to jewellery this Valentine’s, Gabriella Shaw Ceramics have created a variety hand painted, hand crafted Valentine’s themed items, featuring mugs, jugs and teapots. For those with a sweet tooth, Cocoa Moon provide a beautifully designed heart-shaped box containing a carefully selected range of dark, milk and white chocolates from Prestat. Making time for some regular exercise is something that should be a part of anyone’s overall health and fitness routine. But, many people find it difficult to stay on track with their program, once the initial enthusiasm of the New Year has faded. Here we’ve been talking to some local fitness experts, discovering different ways to get fit and stay motivated.

New and improved Petersfield’s Taro Leisure Centre has just seen a fantastic £150,000 refurbishment that now includes a spin studio, state of the art cardio, resistance and audio equipment, a

Petersfield Triathlon Club member, Sarah Matthews 14

Life in Petersfield

Getting lean in 2013 2013 is upon us, and now is the time when many people think about how we can get rid of some of that festive indulgence TRX Station, as well as a Flabelos machine and sunbed. So when it came to getting fit for the New Year it was only natural we’d pop along to put some of these fantastic facilities to the test! Arriving at the centre I was greeted by Dave Brown. Before starting my exercises Dave asked me a series of questions to establish my level of fitness and goals for the session. Dave was then able to tailor a routine to meet my individual needs. To get me warmed up, Dave began with 10 minutes on an exercise bike. The bike had a selection of settings so I could adjust the resistance depending on how hard I wanted to work. Nice and warm I then moved on to the rowing machine. Again, Dave adjusted the settings to challenge me with the work out. Here I completed a series of three circuits, each getting slightly harder each time. Cardio complete, Dave then took me through a series of weight resistance exercises. I was slightly concerned about these as weights have never been one of my strong points (no pun intended!) However,

Dave was careful to push me just to, and not past, my limits. My exercises were finished off with some work on the TRX machine. Using unique suspension, this original machine allows your leverage gravity and your bodyweight to perform hundreds of exercises. I found it particularly effective, firstly when doing squats then the plank. After my session at the Taro Centre I felt tired but also very motivated from a fun workout on state of the art equipment with supportive staff. www.taroleisurecentre.co.uk

On the run Running is one of the best forms of aerobic exercise and you don’t have to join an expensive gym to do it. Liss Runners Chairman, Will Purchase has been explaining to us the benefits of this exercise and sharing his top advice for maintaining it in the New Year: Regular exercise has many proven benefits Issue 38 January / February 2013

health

including reducing your risk of many major illnesses, losing weight and making you feel good! If you’re not yet fit enough to start running then you could begin with a programme of walking and perhaps move on to running from there.

Will’s two tips for getting motivated to run: • Run with other people, it’s much more fun. Join your local running club such as Liss Runners. You do not have to be a fast runner to join, the club has runners of all standards and meets every Wednesday evening at the Liss Triangle Centre and every Thursday in Petersfield. All newcomers are welcome! • Set yourself a goal. If you are new to running your first goal might be to simply complete a 10km race. After that you will inevitably want to do a better time, or perhaps build up to a half or full marathon. If road running isn’t your thing there are many cross-country and trail races around. Once you join a club you will discover all sorts of races and events, and you’ll also find other like-minded runners to help you train towards your goal. www.liss-runners.org.uk

Tri-ing a new approach to exercise in the New Year? Back in September we learnt all about how fun completing a triathlon can be from the Petersfield Triathlon club. Entering the New Year we thought we’d catch up with them and find out their recommendations for starting a new exercise regime: Whether you’re a seasoned triathlete looking to improve your performance or take on bigger challenges, such as an ironman, or planning to embark on your first triathlon you’ll need some sort of plan to achieve your goals. Juggling work, home life, social life and training for the five parts of the race - swimming, swim-cycle transition, cycling, cycle-run transition and running - takes self-discipline, planning and motivation, especially if you hit minor set backs like winter colds or bad weather. One of the most effective ways to embark on a new exercise regime - apart from allocating time in your diary - is to join a Club. Petersfield Triathlon Club welcomes adult triathletes of all standards from beginners to members of Team GB Age Groups. The Club provides coached training sessions and is a great place to meet training buddies and glean valuable tips. Finding someone to train with is a really powerful motivator ... no-one likes letting a friend down just because it’s raining. The Brownlee brothers didn’t get to win Olympic medals by deciding it was too cold and wet to train.

Petersfield Walking Club

Walkabout Exercise doesn’t have to be something extreme. Did you know many of us could massively improve our health by just completing a brisk walk 30 minutes a day? Petersfield Walking for Health host two walks every Wednesday from Winton House Court Yard, High Street, at 10 o`clock. One is slower paced and the other brisker both last about an hour. Walk Leader, David Monger explains, “Our Voluntary Walk Leaders organise a different walk each week. For a change of scenery we sometimes arrange an away day walk. These outing are very popular, walkers organise car sharing. There is a very strong social side to our walking

group, we have a B.B.Q in the summer and a Christmas Lunch, plus we always have coffee together after each weekly walk. Many friendships have been made over the seven years that we have been walking together plus great benefits to our health. It is a free and very popular happy walking group with as many as forty to fifty people attending each week. You will find a very warm welcome at Petersfield Walking for Health whatever your age or walking ability.” Further Details from David Monger 01730 262792 davemonger@tiscali.co.uk

Museum Curator Kathrin Pieren explains how Tracey Richardson’s Games Maker outfit from the Paralympics 2012 entered the collection of Petersfield Museum and gives an insight into how museums collect Life in Petersfield has previously featured Tracey Richardson, a Petersfield resident and business woman, who became one of approximately 70,000 volunteers giving up their spare time to make the London Olympic and Paralympic Games a great success. Now Tracey has decided to donate one of her Games Maker’s uniforms to Petersfield Museum. Tracey said, “I still wear my uniform when giving inspirational talks about my experience, the rewards of volunteering in general and the valuable business learnings from being at the heart of London 2012. But knowing the Museum had an exhibition this year featuring links from the town to the Olympics, I was keen to leave the memory of my fantastic time as a Games Maker in the archive for display until next time London has the Games!” Museums do not just collect any ‘old stuff’. Each museum has a collections policy that defines what types of artefacts it acquires and what time period and geographical area it covers. Petersfield Museum collects papers, photographs, memories (in the form of recorded interviews) and objects that document the history of the town and its surrounding villages from the earliest of times. Idea Conception Evolution Bosch John Urquhart started his haulage and repair workshop in the early 1920s in a central location on Station Road in the market town of Petersfield. Petersfield, which dates back to the middle ages, derived its name from a distortion of the words St Peter’s Feld. A feld was an area of open land devoid of trees. In the early 12th century a church was built which was dedicated to St. Peter and used as the location for a new market by the landowner the Earl of Gloucester to draw in merchants and traders and encourage the development of houses. Petersfield was born. During the early part of the 20th century the population had grown rapidly to approximately 4000 people. The close proximity of the railway station, which connected Petersfield to both London and Portsmouth in 1859 and later to Midhurst, made the location ideal for John’s new business. Urquharts served the local community by transporting goods and produce from the local farmers to market, moving cattle and livestock traded at the Taro Fair and providing onward transport for merchandise arriving at the railway station from London and the docks at Portsmouth. Urquharts grew both in size and notoriety. In the early 1930s during the great depression when unemployment had reached three and a half million, profits from the once popular haulage trade were declining. Thankfully, the industrial areas and coal mining districts in the North were hardest hit with London and the South East of England being less hurt, however, steps were taken to develop Urquharts workshop facilities which had always operated in the shadows of the haulage business. During the 1930s an industry that prospered was the motor industry. It was dominated primarily by Austin Morris and Ford. The amount of cars on British roads doubled in the decade. Reacting to this boom, Urquharts changed direction again and by the mid 1940’s had become Petersfield first Vauxhall Bedford Dealership. This was a new and exciting time for the Urquhart family and soon they were expanding their thriving business. A new purpose built workshop was erected in the 1950’s on what is now the Petersfield Trading Estate, having the main service roads named after its franchise, Vauxhall Way and Bedford Road. This new site served as coachbuilder, paint shop, body shop and commercial vehicle workshop.

Petersfield Garage Services John’s son Murray, having taken over the business from his father, developed the business further. Throughout the 60s and 70s a new office complex and commercial vehicle workshop were built. This new workshop was constructed to meet the ever changing legislation in vehicle inspection. Owning garages in Ropley, Bishops Waltham and Alton, Murray and his brother John, who had returned from the Navy, decided to consolidate their Company by selling these garages and transferring some valued members of staff to the larger premises on Vauxhall Way. One such staff member was John Churchouse, nicknamed Curly who started with the Company in 1957 and worked for both Murray and his son Gordon. Curly, having witnessed many changes, retired in 2002 with over 45 years service. One huge change was the demise of the Bedford truck. Production started in 1931 in Luton and until the design of the Q series they were simply a rework of Chevrolet Vehicles. Vauxhall opened its impressive new Bedford plant in Dunstable in 1942 and become a major supplier to the army during World War II. However, during the 1980s Bedford failed to win a UK Ministry of Defence contract, losing out to Leyland who later became Leyland Daf. This was a major blow for Bedford and the brand ceased at the end of the 1980s. The demise of Bedford meant that Urquharts faced some challenging times ahead and in 1982 they sold their Station Road site, now Whiterose Petersfield, and moved their whole operation to Vauxhall Way. This was the catalyst for Urquharts tendering successfully for a vehicle maintenance contract with the Ministry of Defence, who at the time still retained and used many Bedford trucks. This is a contract still held today 22 years later by Petersfield Garage Services, the new name for Urquharts. In late 2012 Petersfield Garage Services became an elite Bosch Car Service Centre, one of 600 in the country, offering manufacture level diagnostic facilities and working to a From left to right; Gordon Richards the new owner strict code of practice to provide a high quality of Petersfield Garage along with John Churchhouse retired manager from the garage for over 45 years service and peace of mind motoring. and Andrew McClenan the general manager of After 90 years of serving the community, we Petersfield Garage. still strive to give an unmatched quality service through our numerous onsite facilities.

Old Scottish oatcakes, The Natural Apothecary

Scottish or not, many see the 25 January as a great excuse to have a party. Commemorating the life of Scottish poet Robert Burns, famous for works such as “Auld Lang Syne”, every year a number of Burns’ Night dinners are held across the UK. So as we all get set for another feast, we hope you’ll enjoy some of these Scottish inspired recipes to give you a taste of the Highlands in Petersfield Scottish “ice cream”

A unique recipe for “warm” ice cream Whiskey dark treacle and ginger ice cream: For the base mix: 3 yolks 70g Sugar 300ml whipping cream To flavour: A shot of whiskey –about 30ml A spoon of Treacle syrup Handful of chopped crystallized ginger Place the cream in a saucepan and gently bring to a near boil. The pan should be big enough to contain all of your ingredients. Meanwhile in a bowl mix the sugar and yolks, again this bowl should be big enough to contain all the ingredients. When the cream is simmering pour a small quantity into the sugar/yolks and mix well keep adding the cream and mixing. Pour the mixture back into the pan and gently warm up for couple of a minutes until it slightly thickens, it should not come to the boil or it would turn into an omelette! Strain the mix and chill it for four hours – kept chilled it is safe to use for 48 hours. Smile! The difficult bit is behind you … When ready turn the ice cream mix, whiskey and treacle into the ice cream base – you can adjust quantities slightly to suit 28

Life in Petersfield

your personal taste but too much sugars or alcohol will stop the ice cream from freezing. Put the mix into your ice cream machine and follow manufacture instructions. When ready scoop out into a suitable container and swiftly mix in the ginger.

Sprinkle some extra flour and oats on a work surface and roll out the mixture to 1/2cm thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Place the oat cakes on a baking tray and bake for appprox. 20-30mins or until slightly golden brown.

Old Scottish oatcakes

Oatcakes are wonderfully healthy because they are have a Low Glycaemic Load which means they are a good for weight loss, particularly if you combine them with a protein snack e.g. almonds. It’s also a very simple recipe to follow 225g oats 60g wholewheat flour 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 60g butter 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp sugar 60-80ml hot water Pre-heat the oven to 190C. Mix together the oats, flour, salt, sugar and bicarbonate of soda. Add the butter and rub together until everything is mixed and has the consistency of large bread crumbs. Add the hot water a little bit at a time and combine until you have a dough.

The Natural Apothecary, 01730 858183

Scots Flummery

A quick and easy pudding that should be served in small wine glasses or goblets

50g fine oatmeal 4 x 15ml spoons whisky 2 x 15 ml spoons local honey 300ml jersey cream 4-8 shortbread fingers to serve Put oatmeal, honey and whisky in a heavy pan and stir well. Leave to soak for 15 minutes, then heat gently for about a minute, stir with wooden spoon until thick. Spoon out into large bowl and leave to cool. Pour cream onto oatmeal mixture and beat gently until blended. Spoon into 4 individual glasses and serve with shortbread fingers. Serve chilled. gardening

Get gardening As we enter the New Year, gardening expert, Pippa Greenwood lets us know what jobs we should be doing in the garden this season For most of us the festive season is likely to have involved rather more sitting down and lounging about than usual and probably a few more calories than usual too. So why not use the first few months of the gardening New Year to put some of that sedentary indulgence behind you (not literally!) There really is nothing like some gentle, or not so gentle, gardening to wake us all up a bit! Remember that salt used to keep drives and paths ice free in cold weather could prove lethal if it contaminates the garden soil around the roots of plants nearby. Use it sparingly and with care, less rather than more is always the best option and it’ll probably save you a fortune too. Always try to avoid walking on frostcovered lawns or grassed areas as this can do untold damage. As frosts or snow hit lawn grasses they are easily crushed or broken when hit by passing feet and they then become more prone to diseases later 30

Life in Petersfield

in the year. I’m a self-confessed sweet-pea addict, so continue to make sowings of these summery delights to bring colour, elegance and fabulous perfume to your garden later this year. Remember to allow enough plants so that you have some to grow up runner bean wig-wams where they will not only look gorgeous, but also help to bring in plenty of pollinators for a good set of beans. It may be too cold for most vegetables yet, but don’t forget that if you’d like to maximise your chances of getting a good crop from your vegetable plot this year, you can order garden-ready vegetable plants from me at www.pippagreenwood.com and then, each week you’ll receive an email full of advice and tips from me, tailor made to the crops you’ve selected, from pre-planting advice right through to harvest. Use canes to mark out areas where bulb foliage is starting to come through the lawn or other grassed areas. This should help to minimise damage form passing feet. I use

canes combined with string, twine or balertwine to ‘fence off’ emerging bulb shoots and so, hopefully prevent people from walking on them, and delivery vans from running them over! In flowerbeds and borders as bulb foliage starts to appear gently fork over the soil surface to break up compaction that could inhibit the shoots as they try to grow. This is especially useful if the soil has developed a ‘cap’ after being subjected to heavy rainfall, or other compaction. Prune ornamental vines such as Vitis coignetiae – if you leave it too much later they may well ‘bleed’ or produce vast quantities of sap, so weakening them in the process. If ponds have become frozen over, don’t succumb to temptation and smash the ice as if any fish, newts or other critters live in the water they can be damaged - instead ensure they have sufficient oxygen by melting a hole in the surface ice using a pan of very hot water held on the ice. If you are reading this it means the 5000 year old Mayan prophecy, that the world would end on 21 December 2012, was incorrect. In turn this means that we at Cox Manning are working to process accounts and tax returns to meet the tax filing deadline. January tends to be our busiest time of the year but we still find time to help our clients organise their finances. Many clients find it difficult to predict their total income for the current tax year and by helping them with their predictions we are often able to reduce the tax they need to pay at the end of January. Predictions are an important part of our life. Helping our clients produce cash flow predictions to aid their bank managers approve requests for finance; predicting the level of tax bills in good time so money can be put to one side; predicting the level of income someone will receive after they retire and, perhaps more importantly, helping them to predict the level of their outgoings. After the Chancellor’s Budget Statement we are quick to predict how the proposed changes will affect each individual client’s circumstances – and we update those predictions as proposals become law or the Government does a U-turn. We pride ourselves on looking to the future, keeping ahead of changes and helping clients to predict their future. If you would like us to help with your predictions then please get in touch.

Facial hair because we care

Dilys Lownsborough presenting the donated cheque to the Manager of Bulmer House Tony Rocks. The Bluebird Care Movember Team with moustaches.

Care at home provider, Bluebird Care, has raised over £1,200 for the men’s healthcare charity, Movember. Seven members of the team grew their moustaches in November to gain sponsorship and raise awareness of testicular & prostate cancer, joining over 360,000 other “Mo Bros”, as they are called, across the UK. Bluebird Care’s Care Workers provide different forms of care for people in their own homes, including personal care, so they are well trained in the art of shaving. Several Care Workers kindly volunteered

to demonstrate their male grooming skills and reaching for their razors, shaved clean all members of the team on the last day of Movember. All members of the team started the month clean shaven and grew furry upper lips during the month. Funds raised go to support Movember men’s healthcare initiatives and those of its health partners Prostate Cancer UK and The Institute of Cancer Research. Bluebird Care, 01730 260 026

Moving mountains Petersfield care home provider, Milkwood Care Limited has introduced innovative ways to improve the care given in their homes. These have included joining the 1000 Live Plus programme. This initiative was set up by the NHS improve the quality of patient care, and to reduce avoidable harm to people in their care or under treatment. The aim is to make a real difference to as many people as possible by saving lives and by giving better treatment for those suffering from mental health disorders. Dr Alan Wilson, director of 1000 Lives Plus, has stressed that a vital part of the campaign is to spread new ways of working from practice to practice and from organisation to organisation, and to this end a new initiative was started last year in Brecon to monitor and reduce the use of anti-psychotic drugs administered to residents at The Mountains, a specialist nursing home caring for people with advanced dementia and mental disorder. This pioneering project has more steps to take, and it is hoped that the findings from 34

the team can be introduced to other homes and hospitals throughout the UK to help them improve the quality of life for people with dementia, and for those who love and care for them. Milkwood Care Limted, 01730 233993

Sponsored knit success Staff members and residents of Bulmer House Residential Care Home gathered as group of knitting fundraisers, revealed the results of their recent sponsored knit. As well as unveiling all the blankets the ‘Big Knits’ had made, chief organiser, Dilys Lownsborough presented a cheque for the monies raised to the Manager of the facility, Tony Rocks. The sponsored knit saw over 840 diamond squares knitted, to make 11 blankets, which were backed with polar fleece for extra warmth. Every blanket was then distributed in the area to those in need, by the Tindle Newspaper Group. Many of the knitters were self- sponsoring, but recognition and thanks should also go to the many individuals who supported this event by donation or sponsorship, as well as local businesses, namely Ann’s Prams, Nicky’s Fish and Chips, Frasers Menswear, Wallis White and co, Back 2 Health, Knot Just Wool, The Archway Veterinary Surgery, Southampton Solent University Maritime and Technology Faculty, and Dilys Designs. The winning ‘blind auction’ bid for a blanket was made by Mrs. D.J.Chatfield of Croydon Surrey, for £70. The total monies raised :-£1,527.50. This money, will go towards fuel for the minibus, to take the residents on outings during the forthcoming year, and for some form of entertainment’ in house’ for the less mobile. Dilys Lownsborough would like to sincerely thank ALL those who have taken part in the project for their support and generosity. Bulmer House, 01730 261744 Issue 38 January / February 2013

20 Years in Care T

he Rogers family, owners of South Downs Care, celebrated 20 years of running care homes for the elderly in Petersfield and Stroud last weekend. Parties were held in both Downs House and Stroud House to mark this milestone, with a sumptuous buffet lunch and musical entertainers getting everyone’s toes tapping with some Residents getting up to show the younger generation that they have still got their dancing feet. The Rogers family came to Petersfield when they bought Downs House, 20 years

ago and were at the forefront of introducing more fulfilling lives to the Residents in their care. Having looked at many homes where the basic care was provided but little else, they were determined that their homes would not only provide first class care, but also more fulfilling lifestyles to their Residents, with a range of activities designed to stimulate the body and mind, whatever their age or frailty. Paul Rogers who originally started the business with his Mother, a nurse with more than 30 years experience, commented “It has been quite a journey, we have seen four different Inspection Agencies, two Acts of Parliament and mountains of regulations designed to improve care, but the core principals of first class care remain the same and this can only be achieved with a dedicated caring and committed staff team that share your vision and we have been very fortunate to have a great team, many of whom have been with us from the very early days”

Little did Mrs Rogers know when they started that she was helping create a friendly welcoming environment that she would eventually benefit from, when due to failing health she moved in as a Resident, but at least she can still keep an eye on the family and make sure they continue to meet the high standards of care she set out.
