Right of way On 24 March, Damian Hinds will open the latest section of new long distance walking path, The Shipwrights Way. Linking the route between Liphook and Petersfield, the event will take place in conjunction with the official launch of the new section at Liss. To mark the opening there will be a Shipwrights Way Charity Walk/Ride, open to both walkers and cyclists. Depending on fitness, riders and walkers will be given an option of two routes. Both starting from the Riverside Walk in Liss, the first walk will be five miles to Petersfield and the second will be seven miles to Liphook Station. Money raised from the event will go towards improving living conditions and education opportunities for children in villages at the far north of the central region of Ghana in West Africa. Save the Children Petersfield celebrates 50 years This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Save the Children April Clothes sale. To celebrate the anniversary, the charity hope to beat the impressive £35,000, which was raised at last year’s events, with more fundraising efforts. This year’s sale will be longer, including additional dates Friday 19 April and Sunday 21 April to attract even more visitors. Those interested in taking part can make donations from the 15-16 April. Other events planned to help raise funds include an auction at Nicholsons in Fernhurst in June and the traditional Gift Fair in November at the Festival Hall.

perfect opportunity for people to have their say over a wide range of topics.” If adopted, the Plan will form the basis for all future planning and development decisions in the town. During the meeting residents had the chance to ask questions about seven specific aspects of life in Petersfield, including Natural Environment, Shopping Facilities and Housing. At the meeting chairman Malcolm Walton commented on the response of the public “the feedback has been absolutely brilliant as a first engagement with the public. This will only work if the public get involved.” Petersfield’s Neighbourhood Plan, www.petersfieldsplan.co.uk

The hunt for a healthy Easter
Easter has traditionally been associated with indulging in hot cross buns, one or two hundred Easter eggs and plenty of other sweet delights. However, this year if you don’t fancy undoing all the good work you did during lent we’ve got plenty of tips and advice on how you and the kids can have a healthy (and fun!) Easter Happy hunting There is nothing more fun then getting the family together for an Easter egg hunt. What’s more they are great way to get the family out and about doing exercise. If you’re looking for some ‘egg’spiration, Queen Elizabeth Country Park will be hosting a special Easter Egg hunt on 1 April as well as their popular Butser egg roll. Alternatively, if you want to try doing one yourself at home there are plenty of websites with simple templates to download. The Woodland Trust Nature Detectives site at www. naturedetectives.org.uk offers a hunt complete with printable egg pictures, ideas sheet, clue tags, map template and is completely free!

of the abundant fresh vegetables. One of the reasons to buy organic produce is to limit ingestion of pesticides. But this is of course more expensive. If you’d like to save a little on your grocery bill, you can prioritise. The Environmental Working Group has identified the top 12 most pesticide-heavy crops as: Peaches, Apples, Sweet Bell Peppers, Celery, Nectarines, Strawberries, Cherries, Pears, Grapes, Spinach, Lettuce, and Potatoes. So you may want to buy organic. The least contaminated crops were: Onions, Avocado, Sweet Corn, Pineapples, Mango, Asparagus, Sweet Peas, Kiwi Fruit, Bananas, Cabbage, Broccoli, and Papaya - no need to buy organic from a pesticide point of view. To save on quality meat, try the fish counter for some line-caught (avoid farmed as a rule of thumb), sustainable and highly nutritious foods such as Sardine, Herring, Pollock, Dab, Gurnard or Haddock to name a few.

health Size does matter If you still find yourself with a chocolate craving this Easter, opt for a small sized plain egg and be sure to make the most of it by savouring a small amount at a time. It’s fine to have a treat every now and then, but remember, chocolate is high in saturated fat and calories! Personal trainer, Rocky Sole also suggests exercising for your eggs, “When fighting in a boxing ring, males can burn up to 1034 calories per hour and females up to 887 calories…during one ENERGETIX boxing class our clients burn up to 600 calories, that’s 3 Crème eggs/ Maltesers bunnys or 20 mini eggs!” If you fancy fighting the fat (literally) then Rocky Sole’s Adults Boxing classes take place Mondays and Thursdays- 7-8.30pm with Kids Boxing for under 11s on Sundays 11-12.30pm.
Enjoy different delights If you’re planning an Easter family feast’ don’t worry there are plenty of ways to make healthy food fun and healthy. Our food feature on page 26 has a variety of eggless recipes from Petersfields Natural Apothecary, Mooka Ltd and JSW. Plus you can always make traditional foods healthier with a few slight changes. For example instead of butter on your hot cross buns, why not try low fat cream cheese.
Similarly when it comes to the main meal you can make the traditional roast healthier by cooking your potatoes with their skins on so they absorb less fat and keep hold of their nutrients and adding more vegetables to your meal rather than fatty Yorkshires.
Alternative treat Having a healthy Easter doesn’t have to be all about deprivation and exercise – you can treat yourself too! A great way to get you set for the new season is to take some time out and enjoy an alternative treatment. Jacky Milner-Walker at the Centre of Complementary Medicine recommends acupuncture as the perfect springtime therapy. “Acupuncture can be helpful to balance the body and is particularly good at helping with hay fever.”
Be a good egg As well as treating yourself with different luxuries you don’t have to over-load your loved ones with chocolate. Instead give them something they can keep and is actually helping a good cause! After the success of the Bulmer House Big Knit for 2012, Dilys Lownsborough, of Dilys Designs has embarked on a new fundraising campaign for Bulmer house Residential Care home in Petersfield in the form of

Is Therapy for You? You may have wondered at some point in your life, or be questioning right now, if seeing a counsellor would be helpful to you. There are many reasons someone may look to therapy to help them; here is some information about what counselling and psychotherapy is about and what the purpose of the work is. Individual work begins with a person’s exploration of their relationship to themselves. When self-awareness grows, so do the options and opportunities for change; as we understand more about ourselves, we can make more informed decisions about what we want and how we are going to behave. Relationships are continually reshaping as we progress through life. Life stages (birth, childhood, adolescence, young adult etc) and current circumstances put various pressures on us and our connections with others. Couples work aims to support people in relationships to heal old wounds and create an environment of care and cooperation so that issues can be resolved. If you are interested in more information, or would like to make an appointment to meet, contact Pip Sweeney on 07825 372183, or email pip@meontherapy.com

Four seasons
Whatever the timeofyear, youwillwant yourwedding tobemagical. However, the season of your wedding can have a big impact on your food, photography and of course…dress! Here we’ve been catching up with Petersfield’s wedding experts finding out how with a little seasoning you can make your wedding sensational Winter weddings While not an obvious first choice, a winter wedding can actually be incredibly romantic - especially if you go for a Christmas or Valentine date. However, to avoid hyperthermia correct clothing is a must! Don’t worry though this doesn’t mean sacrificing your style. Michele Wheeler at Elegance & Grace says, “Look glamorous and keep warm by choosing satin based dresses, add long sleeves or marabou shrugs. “ The camera can also lie – with some clever photography. Photographer Stephanie Swann recommends beating the chill by bringing cosy socks and boots, “the dress will cover them or alternatively make them a feature!” But if you’d prefer to go for the more conventional option you can still create beautiful winter shots by illuminating your day with a glow of candles, fairylights or a roaring fire for atmospheric indoor portraits. And, we all know in England rain is a probability in most seasons, but it is of 181

course more likely in the winter months. Dilys from Dilys Designs therefore suggests getting your groomsmen to have some large golf umbrellas at the church. “If the weather is wet or windy, the guests, bride and bridal party will be grateful of these as a potential ’barricade’ against the elements.” If the heavens decide to open it is also important to remember your footwear. Dilys says, “by placing a ‘freezer’ type bag completely over the shoes, and securing with a rubber band at the ankle.” This will avoid the shoes being damaged as you get into the church – just remember to take the bags off when you get in! When it comes to beauty, Makeup artist Nicky Rattray says, “‘Don’t forget during the winter you skin tends to be dryer, so start preparing it a month in advance, exfoliating regularly and using a good hydrating moisturiser.” And for nails Leesa Bridson at the Hidden Retreat suggests Shellac, “it is the perfect polish for the fingers and toes as it requires zero drying time, so that means no dashing from the salon wearing flip flops!”
“Spring brings beautiful buds and blooms, the perfect accompaniment for dreamy pictures,” says Stephanie Swann. “And spring showers are not to be dreaded as pretty parasol umbrellas can make wonderful accessories for images.” But dress designer Katherine Cusack always advises to remember the importance of colour. “Dusty blacks and greys can look depressing in April.” Temperatures can also be unpredictable in the spring months. Michele Wheeler recommends dresses with illusion necklines, cap sleeves or capes to provide a bit of coverage. For a rejuvenating spring treatment, Leesa says, “nothing beats a full body scrub treatment to shrug off dead skin cells after the winter. ESPA’s Salt & Oil Scrub is an exceptional skin softening body exfoliation which combines sea salts with essential oils to leave your skin nourished, smooth and supple.” As well as the weather, it is important to keep on top of the trends that are big on the This three tier cake with piped lace edging adorned with roses and Lilly of the Valley would be perfect for a spring wedding, Bellissimo Cakes.

season you get married. Wedding hair stylist Tracey West explains, “lace dresses and boho themes are still in this year so think about the whole picture, if you have that vintage 40’s/50’s dress and wanting a hairstyle to go with it, remember to ask for softer versions of the looks as some hair styles can look more fancy dress if not careful. The boho themes are great with flowers in the hair with soft bouncy curls, soft natural looking movement or effortless looking romantic up do.”

And for the cake…
Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says, “For the fresh feeling of spring why not opt for whites, yellows and lime greens for that clean crisp look.”
For an autumn wedding, Michel Focard
It’s just as important to consider the weather for a summer wedding as it is in the winter. “Umbrellas can be useful at a distance, to shield the brides’ face when looking into the sun as photos are being taken,” Dilys explains. “If it is a hot day, guests waiting outside the church will also be grateful of some unexpected shade.” Stephanie Swann continues, “If it’s baking hot, an extra shirt for the Groom is a handy idea.” Location can also affect your summer wedding outfit. Michele says, “If you are getting married abroad try a lighter weight floaty dress in silk, chiffon or organza. You can add finishing touches such as belts, brooches, or bling to personalise a dress.” However, if you are staying in the UK, find a dress that flatters your body shape and then co-ordinate to wedding theme. “Details such as backward lace boleros to cover up for the ceremony, add a lovely touch and then take off to make the most of the summer. “ To avoid summer tan / strap lines, Leesa proposes a St Tropez full body tan. This is perfect for creating a warm golden glow rather than tango!
Paul McIntyre at Inside Catering’s summer menu l Grilled sea bass with crushed potatoes, orange segments & chard with salsa verde l Chicken breast with a salad of samphire & Borlotti beans with a potato rosti and tarragon dressing l Baked aubergine with tomato, mozzarella and parmesan V l Poached pears with toffee & honey sauce
And for the cake…
Helen Mansey at Belissimo Cakes says, “In the height of summer flowers are in full bloom, colours are vivid and bright so why not take advantage of this and use bright beautiful blooms to inspire the decoration on your cake.”
Autumn Finally for an autumn wedding Stephanie says, “embrace the rich warm colours autumn offers; be it your bouquet, table centrepieces, invitations and portrait backdrops. Combine this alongside gusts of wind and dramatic skies for spectacular effect.” Similarly, when choosing your dress Michele suggests a dress in a softer shade such as champagne or cream which you can then team with autumnal flowers to complement the look. Like spring, autumn weather can be unpredictable hairspray is therefore essential! “Different holds and brands give different effects,” Tracey recommends, “Ellenet by L’Oreal, for soft natural hair down styles or thick hair. The Natural Apothecary Healthy Easter Choc and Banana Smoothie
food
Eggless Easter! Healthy Easter Choc and Banana Smoothie Yes, believe it or not, this is good for you and tastes amazing. Mainly because it contains Raw Cacao, but we have given alternatives if you wish to make the recipe more simple
Ingredients: • 1 whole ripe banana • 3 scoops of low fat natural yogurt (with probiotics for added health benefits) • 1 tsp of Raw Cacao Powder – alternatively you can use a good quality cocoa powder available in most supermarkets (100% cocoa beans preferred) • 1/2 tablespoon of flax seed oil
• 1/2 a cup of almond or rice milk Optional: The Natural Apothecary add powdered ‘energy mix’ which contains a mix of Guarana, Suma, Maca, Raw Cacao and Yacon. It is available to buy in their shop Place all the ingredients into a blender. Blend together and serve in a cold glass. For an extra treat grate some dark chocolate over the top. This will not disappoint – a totally yummy health kick!
The Natural Apothecary, 01730 858183
As much as we love munching on chocolate eggs at Easter there are plenty of other treats you can enjoy. So this Easter if you fancy a change from eggs and getting absolutely ‘eggless’ why not try some of these alternative delights
Savoury selection And if you haven’t got a sweet tooth but you still want to indulge this Easter then this luxury Scallop with Pea Puree and Bacon Veloute recipe from JSW is just the trick Ingredients: Pea puree • 12 scallops – shelled and cleaned • 4 very thin bacon slices • 2 large finely chopped shallots • 150g fresh peas shelled • 125ml double cream • 25g butter • 100g pea shoots
Bacon veloute • 100g large finely chopped shallots • 1/2 clove garlic • 75g good smoked bacon – diced • 100ml white wine • 100ml fish stock • 200ml double cream • 25g butter
Clean and quickly rinse scallops, pat dry with kitchen towel. For the pea puree cook the shallots quickly in the butter, add the double cream and simmer for 3 mins.
Lemon and Lime divine in a cup This pudding is great chilled or frozen and its a bit of a cheat so can be put together in a flash
Ingredients: • 1 tin of condensed milk • Juice from 1 lemon • Juice from 2 limes and zest of 1 • 300ml double cream. • Pretty glasses or cups to serve
In a bowl mix together the condensed milk with juices and zest. In a different bowl whip the cream up until soft peaks appear. Gently fold in the juices and 26

condensed milk into the cream and mix till blended. Pour into your serving dishes and leave to set in the fridge for at least 4 hours (or place in the freezer as they are lovely frozen too.) Before serving decorate with dark chocolate shavings or crushed meringue -why not go crazy and have both! Tip for chocolate shaving: Put a block of chocolate in the freezer for an hour. Take it out and while holding it on its side drew a vegetable peeler on it - you will have great chocolate shavings! Mooka Ltd, 01730 858030
Simmer the peas in salted boiling water for 4 mins, then drain. Add the peas to the reduced cream and liquidise until very smooth. Taste and correct seasoning. Keep warm in the pan. Bacon veloute – cook the shallots, garlic and bacon in the butter until soft without colour. Add the white wine, reduce by half. Add the fish stock, reduce by half. Add the double cream, reduce by half – then strain through a fine sieve, keep warm in the pan. To serve – heat a non-stick pan until hot. Put the rashers of bacon in the pan and cook until crisp – keep warm. In the same pan and cook the scallop on each side (approx 45 seconds dependent on size.) Spoon some of the pea puree on the plates and the cooked scallop, sprinkle the pea shoots. From the bacon veloute with hand blender. Spoon the foam onto the scallop and the crispy bacon. gardening
Spring has sprung As we enter the new season, gardening expert, Pippa Greenwood lets us know what we should be doing in our gardens this spring Spring has definitely sprung (on some days at least!) and so even if you’d not describe yourself as a keen gardener, give gardening a go. There’s a lot to do, but also an awful lot to gain! Fun, fresh-air, feelings of achievement...not to mention fantastic crops of gorgeous fruit, veg and flowers! Plant gladiolus corms now and they will be producing their vibrant showy display later this year. Choose a sunny site with a welldrained soil for best results. If you have lots of space you could even grow a few extra just for using as cut flowers. If the surface of your lawn is now adequately dry you may like to try to give it a bit of a haircut. Make sure that the mower
28
Life in Petersfield
blades are set high as the last thing you want to do is scalp the lawn. If in doubt, wait a little longer as lawns have suffered serious stress caused by all that snow and rain a few months ago. To make even a rather rough looking lawns look instantly better, use a pair of edging shears to neaten up the ledges. Stand on a plank or board as you do the edging so that you reduce the risk of any compaction or damage to the edge itself. As herbaceous perennials start to become available in garden centres and nurseries, it is worth keeping an eye out for your favourite varieties and at the same time take a look at your own existing plants to see whether they would benefit from being divided. Start chitting (sprouting) potatoes by placing them with the blunt end of each tuber uppermost in a seed tray or old egg box. Position these trays in a cool, but frostfree spot. Chitted seed potatoes will tend to produce a slightly heavier and slightly earlier crop. Make sure that you rake up fallen leaves from beneath your rose plants. They may look quite innocent but these may well be harbouring over-wintering fungal diseases
such as black spot, so they need to be well out of the way before the new leaves break. Provided the soil is not too cold and wet, make more sowings of colourful annuals direct in to the soil in a sunny part of the garden. Try candytuft, godetia, love-ina-mist and stardust or cornflowers. Look out for seed packets marked ‘HA’ or ‘Hardy Annual.’ Keep deadheading spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils. If these faded flower heads are removed promptly it will prevent valuable reserves being wasted as the plant forms seed heads, instead energy can be sent straight down to the bulbs so that they flower well again next year.
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ – choose from a fantastic selection of vegetables, sent to you at just the right time for planting AND each week you get an email from her telling you all you need to know to ensure great results – from just £29 for up to 66 garden-ready plants!

Alton Convent School have their say in Paris Alton Convent school pupils attending the ‘Your Future in Europe’ conference
London calling Lower Sixth pupils from Alton Convent School recently attended the ‘Your Future in Europe’ conference to have their say about politics in the continent. With an aim to outline the role of the European Union in society, from its inception as the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1958 to the present day, the pupils attended the event whilst on a trip to Paris. The event gave the children the opportunity to listen and pose questions
on topics such as, ‘Human Rights – Europe’s Record’; ‘Eurozone Crisis: An Economist’s view’ and ‘Your Future in Europe: Work and studying abroad’. The sessions culminated with ‘Question Time’, with a panel including former BBC Economics’ Editor and Dragon’s Den Presenter, Evan Davis as well as Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty and two MPs, Alan Johnson and Henry Smith. Year 6 at Churcher’s College Junior School has been learning about citizenship with a trip to London. On their trip the pupils firstly saw the Queen open the new Parliament before going on to Westminster Abbey. Here they learnt more about the tomb of Elizabeth 1 and the route that Will and Kate took to the altar. The children finished their trip with a boat down the river to Tower Bridge to learn about racks and torture, final messages carved into the thick prison walls; jewels and armour. Bedales students learn from Olympic diver Peter Waterfield Students from Bedales senior and prep schools enjoyed a masterclass with Olympic diver Peter Waterfield as part of the school’s gifted and talented sports programme. Peter, who won an Olympic silver medal in Athens and partnered Tom Daley in London 2012, helped students to develop dive techniques through trampolining sessions and gave an inspirational talk on his Olympian journey. The Bedales gifted and talented programme runs across both the prep and senior schools in academic subjects, the arts and sport. Its aim is to develop students’ skills and abilities through workshops with professionals, experts and accomplished performers. ‘Hearty’ work at King Edward’s School
(l to r) Sister Marie Quinlivan (King Edward’s School), Joanne Finnie-Jones (King Edward’s Development Director), Suzanna McGregor (BHF), Nurse Sandie Titheridge
King Edward’s School now has a new lifesaving defibrillator, thanks to joint funding from the British Heart Foundation and the school’s Medical Centre. The new piece of equipment will allow staff to perform vital emergency first aid in cases where a person has suffered from cardiac arrest. It is fully portable, so can be rushed out to where it is needed, whether that is on a sports field or in a classroom. The funding was awarded following an application to the British Heart Foundation by the School’s Medical Centre Sister, Marie
Quinlivan and Development Director, Jo Finnie-Jones. Sister Quinlivan explained that the School’s rural location combined with the sheer number of pupils, staff and guests that use King Edward’s facilities throughout the year made this money well spent. “It’s obviously something that we hope to never have to use, but 12 staff, six from the Medical Centre, have been fully trained in case it is ever required.”
Diamond sparkling at The Royal Since introducing their new Diamond structure, The Royal School has been pleased with their substantial increase in boy pupils. The school has noted the rise particularly in the bottom end of the Junior School, where there are now boys in the Daycare, Nursery, Reception and Prep 1. The School has also recently welcomed the new Head of Senior Boys’, Mr James Hanson, formerly of Harrow School. Joining this term, Mr Hanson will be meeting with prospective parents by appointment on Wednesday afternoons during the next two terms at the Royal School Hindhead site. Parents wishing to visit the Senior School on behalf of either a son or daughter have been encouraged to do so. The Royal School, 01428 603052

History
on the Heath Bowl Barrows
Petersfield Heath has long been a favourite within the local community. Just a short walk from the High Street, it offers 69 acres of grass as well as 22 acres of water. And with boats for hire, a children’s play area, cricket pitch, a car park and lots of space for picnics you’re always sure to find something going on However, many people don’t know that the Petersfield Heath is also home to a remarkable prehistoric barrow cemetery one of the most impressive and diverse in South-East England. Despite their significance, the barrows have only once been the subject of a formal survey. This occurred in 1930 by Stuart Piggott, when the then student at Churchers College, Stuart produced a plan of their locations. This remains the only archaeological work to have been carried out on the barrows. This could soon change however as Petersfield Museum have applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to carry out a major four-year project centred on the Heath. The Petersfield Museum hope this will put the rich archaeology of the Heath more firmly into the consciousness of the local and wider communities, including those involved in its management. It will also create a new and exciting educational resource and an enhanced attraction within the new South Downs National Park. Petersfield Museum Curator, Kathrin Pieren explains, “Due to the Heath’s key role in the life of the town, public involvement will be central to the project. This will be achieved through both the active participation of local 36

people and the publicizing of results.” Life in Petersfield was lucky enough to have a personal tour of the Heath with a retired Archaeologist who has just revived the Petersfield Archaeological Group, Peter Price. Walking around the Heath, Peter explained how there were 21 known barrows within the Heath, dating between 2200 and 1500BC as well as many barrows that are no longer visible due to development, erosion and scrub growth. In addition to the barrows, Peter also showed us an actual piece of flint he had found on the Heath that could have been used as a knife or cutting blade. As well as involvement with the barrows project, Peter is keen to attract new members to the Petersfield Archaeological Group, “You will never look at the ground in the same way again after coming to one of our meetings. We’ve got lots of exciting digs and projects coming up to help us discover more about our area’s history.” If the bid is successful, two professional and experienced archaeologists, to be appointed by Petersfield Museum, and a group of volunteers, will lead fieldwork and research. The research agenda will build on the most up-to- date academic debates on burial,
ceremony and settlement in later prehistory. The archaeologists in conjunction with Petersfield Museum staff will carry out the engagement with the wider public and schools. The project will seek constant consultation with a range of other interested organisations, all of whom will be represented on an advisory committee. Work could then potentially begin in April 2013 and run until the spring of 2017. Fieldwork will take place during the first three years, involving two excavations per year, geophysical and topographical surveys, and palaeo-environmental sampling. There will also be visits to other key sites and museums in the region. An extensive programme of guided tours, school activities and talks will run over the course of the project, and tours are planned to continue after its completion. The final year will focus on analyzing the findings and drawing conclusions and will culminate in a conference and a book. Riding the wave We are all guilty of moaning about not having enough time – especially when it comes to fitness activities! However, despite being just 14 years old, Petersfield Sailor and Churcher’s College student William Birch-Tomlinson has already achieved a long list of both regional and national sailing titles, as well as a sponsorship with major retailer Crew. Here we caught up with the sailor to find out just how he fits it all in. William first got into sailing on a family holiday in Aberdyfi in North Wales when his mum Jane introduced him to the sport. William went on to complete several courses at the Portsmouth Outdoor Centre including RYA levels 1 to 4 and a Start Racing course. “It was an instructor at the centre that suggested to my mum that I should be encouraged to race as I seemed to do particularly well on the course. Within a

year I joined the RYA South Zone Squad and in 2011 I was selected for the RYA National Intermediate Junior Squad. In September 2012 joined the Topper National Squad of just 24 sailors from all over the UK.” Since then William has gone on to become one of the top three junior Topper sailors in England, an achievement William is particularly proud of. “The competition in the Topper Class is pretty high and I had to sail in a number of National indicator events in 2012, including the National Championships (against about 270 other sailors).” As one of the top three junior Topper sailors in England, William now faces his next challenge at the Home Nations Championships, where he will be representing his country. “Some of the RYA’s top coaches will be there watching us on the water and giving advice between races. There will be the top three male and female Topper sailors and Laser Radial sailors from England, Scotland Ireland and Wales. We will compete in teams to try to bring home the cup!” To prepare for his sailing challenges William follows a strict training schedule, sailing almost every weekend somewhere in the country, either at his home club, Hayling Island Sailing Club, or with his fellow squad sailors in the National Junior Squad. “We have residential camps throughout the winter and spring. I also have a rowing machine at home and use this to improve my cardiovascular fitness, arm and leg strength
and core stability.” Diet is an equally important part of William’s preparation so the RYA squad always offer nutrition support to ensure that William and his fellow sailors have the appropriate fuel. “I always eat pasta just before going on the water and then I take plenty of snacks and drinks afloat as we can be on the water without coming ashore for up to six hours.” However, despite his intense training, William is always sure to prioritise his schoolwork. “Mum and dad have been very strict about me getting homework done during the week, before I am allowed to go sailing at weekends. Occasionally I need time off school and my headmaster Mr Simon Williams at Churcher’s College has been very accommodating when I need the occasional day off to travel to an event.” To take him to the next stage of his sailing career at the end of this year William hopes to ‘transition’ into his next boat. “I have my eye on an RYA Pathway boat called the ‘International 420’. This is a double handed boat with a symmetric spinnaker and a trapeze, it is one of the most technical sailing dinghys’ around and leads on to a ‘470’ which is currently an Olympic class boat.” To get the boat William will be looking for additional sponsorship. “I can be contacted at jbirchtomlinson@aol.com and can offer advertising on my sails and my boat in return for help to fund my next campaign.” Issue 39 March / April 2013

FAST healthcare
introduced a course to help people care with dementia. Richard Norrie from FAST healthcare explains, “Our ‘Caring well for people with Dementia’ course can ensure a carer does not remain misinformed, isolated or overwhelmed by the individual nature of their care work. That in itself will greatly enhance the working experience.” The ‘Caring well for people with Dementia’ course is an e-learning programme allowing users to learn at their own pace and in the comfort of their own computer. “The programme is informative, thought provoking and thorough. This type of distance learning allows the carer to dip into it at times convenient to them, an important aspect when considering the unpredictability of the caring task.” FAST healthcare, 01730 230553

A popular children arts and drama group has returned to Petersfield. Founded in December 2011, Rapskallions was inspired by ex teachers, Elsa Donovan and Sean Quinn after they decided to use their creative skills to deliver something different to the community. Elsa explains “I have taught drama for over 14 years in many local schools and theatres following my drama degree and have appeared in many productions myself, some of which professional. Sean teaches guitar, drums, percussion and voice.” The groups were forced to stop in November 2012 due to childcare requirements of the organizers, however these have now been solved and Petersfield parents are eagerly waiting the groups return. “Many have been asking when it was coming back and have now signed up. Some feel that as well as teaching new skills their children have really grown in confidence, made lots of new friends and are really eager to come because it is a relaxed and fun atmosphere.” Classes will recommence on 2 March taking place every Saturday at the Petersfield scout hut with 5-8yrs at 11a.m -12.30pm and 9-12yrs at 12.45-2.15pm.

Simpler tax for the smaller business? The Chancellor is to proceed with proposals to make the tax system simpler for the small unincorporated business with an optional “simplified cash basis”. The scheme will not be available to general partnerships. Where a business has a turnover up to the VAT limit (currently £77,000) it will be able to calculate its profits on the simplified cash basis rather than the full accruals accounting basis. In addition it will not have to distinguish between revenue and capital expenditure. This means that capital expenditure on asset acquisitions will generally be deductible when paid – with certain exceptions for items such as cars and premises. On the up side, businesses will be able to claim a range of expenses on a flat rate basis rather than having to identify actual amounts spent but, on the down side, any losses will have to be carried forward and set against future profits rather than offset against other income. If you think this may be of interest to you and would like some further information please get in touch!
