And to mark this lovely occasion this issue of Life in Petersfield is definitely one for the boys… but don’t worry ladies there is still plenty to keep you entertained too! Showing their softer side, we’ve been talking to some of Petersfield’s most well known dads about why they love being a dad and what would make their Father’s day extra special. The 10-16 June is also National Men’s Health week, so to ensure he’s keeping fit and well, we’ve been finding out from Petersfield’s health experts what conditions they should be looking out for. Then, for male vegetarians, female vegetarians or just anyone that likes vegetables! Our food feature is filled with tasty veggie recipes, proving you don’t need meat to eat. Festival fever in Petersfield

Petersfield Spring Festival 2012

Petersfield Spring Festival is returning to the square for another fun weekend of events from the 25- 27 May. Organised by Petersfield Festivals, run by Steve Jacob and Ben Errey, the three-day Bank Holiday weekend will be full of great activities for all the family! As well as fantastic acts on stage there will be a huge and varied petting zoo, Victorian hand powered children’s rides, The Herald Festival of Transport and two days of market stalls selling quality produce. Petersfield Festival of Food and Drink on the move This year, the Petersfield Festival of Food & Drink is moving from the town centre to Queen Elizabeth Country Park. Taking place from the 15-16 June, all proceeds from the fun event will go towards local Hospice at Home Charity, the Rosemary Foundation. With more space, free parking and lots more happening the organisers are hoping to attract more visitors and raise more money for the charity. Visitors will be charged a token £3, all of which will go directly to the Rosemary Foundation. The Rosemary Ramble will also take place at the park on the Sunday of the festival to help increase funds. The sponsored walk through QECP will give everyone the opportunity to take part regardless of fitness, with walks from just two miles to ten miles long. Taking part in the walk is £10 pp, including free entry to the Food Festival, a t-shirt and medal on completion. Sponsorship forms are available for collection from One Tree Books, Lavant Street. Night at the Petersfield Museum On Friday 17 May Petersfield Museum and the Flora Twort Gallery will be taking part in Museums at Night. Celebrating arts, culture and heritage, the annual event sees hundreds of museums, galleries, libraries, archives and heritage sites open their doors for special evening activities. This year both the museum and the gallery 6

will be holding family friendly events and will be open 7pm – 9pm for visitors. At the Museum, guests will have the chance to meet two historical characters from the Roman and Victorian times who will then take them through the collections and allow them to get ‘hands-on’ with real artefacts.

HRH The Princess Royal comes to Petersfield The Save the Children President, the Princess Royal, attended a special private pre-sale day at the Petersfield Festival Hall. The royal visit marked the charity’s 50th year of the Clothes Sale. The Princess Royal was welcomed by The Lord-Lieutenant and presented to the High Sheriff and Civic dignitaries before being escorted to meet the Save the Children volunteers and supporters. After seeing a special display of archive material from the charity’s recent history, Her Royal Highness gave a few words on the success and hard work of the charity before cutting a celebration cake. Miss Aurelia Antrobus, aged five, whose grandmother Prue Rushmer is a volunteer and Committee member, completed the visit by presenting a posy to the Princess Royal. Chair Pauline Kneen said “It is an honour that HRH the Princess Royal is visiting our Clothes Sale. After fifty years we are still going from strength to strength. We are hugely grateful to all the volunteers that dedicate their time and to local residents for their ongoing generosity.” www.savethechildren.org.uk

Damian Hinds MP opens Shipwrights Way The long distance path runs through the heart of East Hampshire, across the South Downs National Park to Hayling Island and finishes at Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard. Local Walking for Health volunteers ran a sponsored walk/cycle in conjunction with the opening to help raise money for the Buriton Village to Village Charity Group. The fundraising total is not yet known, but the group raised a significant amount towards books for 19 schools in Ghana. Damian Hinds MP said, “With the area’s network of bridleways and footpaths, beautiful countryside and welcoming pubs, we have the opportunity to really develop our inbound tourism, and the L to R, Damian Hinds MP, Nick Tucker - Forestry Shipwright’s Way will play Commission (FC), Sarah Hobbs - EHDC, Cath Hart a key role in this.”

Around 100 walkers, cyclists and a horserider gathered to see the opening of the Liphook, Liss and Petersfield sections of the Shipwrights Way. Damian Hinds MP declared the route open at the picnic area in Liss, and started the walkers and riders on their journeys north to Liphook and south to Petersfield.

Former TPS students, Perry Taylor and Harry Dobson, are now just one winning performance away from playing at the O2 in London, having made it all the way through to the area finals of national music competition, TeenStar. Perry, 19, and Harry, 18, will now be performing at The Guildhall, Portsmouth, on May 18 in the Area Finals of this exciting competition. Getting through this next round would mean that the boys would go head-to-head with other winning acts to play in the grand final at the O2 and win a chance to become recording artists. The talented duo, who perform as Perry & Harry, wowed the judges and the huge audience in a Regional Final Showcase at Ferneham Hall with their highly original take on two popular chart hits – Boyfriend, by Justin Bieber, and Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - which they put together in a ‘mash up’: “We chose the Justin Bieber track as we like the song then we realised that Thrift Shop, which is a big hit at the moment, worked with the chords,” said Harry. “We thought it would be a great way to catch the audience’s attention, and it did, as there was a big scream from the crowd as they recognised it!”

Father’s Day

DAD’S ARMY Revision Relief Our Petersfield Volunteer of the Year Gerry Conran is hoping for a break from studying stress this Father’s Day. “Father’s Day is normally at a time of family exams, this year we have one son immersed in A level exams and one on their countdown to a summer internship programme, so things may be a little tense, but perhaps a Father’s Day Sunday of a family walk along the beach followed by a lazy family lunch.” Once the exams are over, Gerry’s dream present would be a family holiday in the middle of September.

“It would be great if we could all spend some time together before the children embark on their next stages of study and university.” And his best thing about being a dad is: “Watching children grow and develop, and grasping the opportunities offered them and also listening and helping them overcome the barriers and obstacles in their path, and sharing in the joy and pride in their achievements.”

Inside Catering Chef, Paul McIntyre has a good idea of his dream Father’s Day…and his reality. But while they might be quite different he still couldn’t be happier. “Well there’s the dream of waking late in a warm country to a great breakfast and my favourite Chai Latte and watch a DVD with my boys next to me then spend a day playing in the pool and beach... The reality is the boys will be up at the crack of dawn, the weather in Hampshire will be awful, I am the cook of the house so will cook my own breakfast and probably spend the day watching CBeebies!!! Still it’s enough for me.” And while he has three clear ideas for his perfect Father’s Day present:

Daddy cool Steve Jacob of Petersfield Festivals loves watching how children grow into their own very different personalities and their great amount of confidence as well as simply holding his daughter’s hand. “Walking my daughter to school and feeling the warm grip of her hand in mine. I only probably have a year or so left before it is too uncool to be holding my hand any more. Being embarrassing Dad when their friends come round or we are out in public… the reward gets even better as they become teenagers!” On Father’s Day Steve thinks it’s important to remember the grandparents.

“Aston Martin V8 Coupe with maroon interior, deep dive to the Titanic wreck, keys to the Tower of London to spend a day looking in every room, so any of them will do?” He can’t pin down just one thing he loves about being a dad. “There are so many things about being a dad that it’s impossible. What’s amazing is the cheer and joy children bring, the innocent laughter, the sparkle of life in their eyes and it’s the small things that as a father I remember, first laugh, first steps, first haircuts, first Christmas and birthday etc. To watch your children grow and learn is incredible and giving them the love and encouragement to be happy and confident children is very important.”

“It is their special day too. We will usually have a very leisurely morning and go for a lovely brunch somewhere maybe followed by a quick walk about and then snuggle up for a family afternoon watching a DVD before the usual routine of bath/ bed begins again.” And his dream present would be: “To drive an Aston Martin DB9 for a weekend. It is the ultimate car and way out of my price range for ever owning one… or even hiring one for a weekend! Or a trip to see the Northern Lights in Iceland which are supposed to be awesome or a more realistic dream present would be Apple TV for the front room so we can see all our family photos saved on the laptop on the main TV.”

Helping his health The 10-16 June is national Men’s Health Week and to celebrate we’ve been finding out from Petersfield’s health experts how we can help improve the health and fitness of the men in our lives Can you hear me?

Despite being the most common sufferers of hearing loss, men are often the least likely to get their ears checked. Listening to an iPod, working in factories, nightclubs and making up the majority of the military forces means many men are exposed to loud noise for a number of hours a day. Here noise levels can be 90 decibels or more, extremely harmful and detrimental to hearing. Gylnis Ryall of Specsavers continues, “men are more vain than women and normally have to be forced to get their ears tested by the women in their life, otherwise they just

let the problem persist,” A simple hearing test can ward off the serious health problems associated with hearing loss that can reduce quality of life, affect confidence and damage relationships.

Prevention is better than cure

With over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year , prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Due to the slow development of the cancer, sufferers can often go many years without any signs of the disease. Symptoms frequently only become apparent when the prostate is large enough to affect the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis). These can include things like an increased need to urinate, straining while urinating and a feeling that the bladder has not fully emptied. But, if he’s experiencing these symptoms don’t panic as it is more likely they are caused by something else such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (also known as BPH or prostate enlargement) – simply put your mind at rest and go to the GP to get it checked out. To help prevent prostate Cancer, The Centre of Complementary Medicine’s

nutritionist, Dee French recommends a Mediterranean diet. Here she explains, “This has been shown to prevent prostate cancer, particularly beneficial foods include tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli and green tea.” Dee also suggests vitamin E rich foods (such as cold-pressed oils available from wheat germ, sunflower, safflower), nuts and seeds, green leafy vegetables and olives. Avoiding certain foods can further help the prostate. Dee continues, “Eating highly processed or burnt food, which often happens when barbequing and frying, and excess dairy and animal fats has been found to correlate with an increased risk for prostate cancer.”

Most men you meet think they have a gladiator inside them so what better way to get them fighting fit than a gladiator boot camp. Petersfield Fitness Instructor, Steve Stidolph, was fed up of the countless gyms, classes and personal trainers that all did the same thing when he was inspired to create his new gladiator camp. “I decided it was time to up the anti and create something just a little bit more special and after my discovery of the TV series Spartacus a gladiator camp all of my own seemed like the perfect solution.” Starting on the 7 May, the camp includes 18 sessions over six weeks, featuring hardcore intense circuit training, spinning, boxing with pad work, ab work, core work and stretching. Open to all ages, sexes and fitness abilities the camp will also include a personal training session the program with advice on diet and nutrition.

Excite your exercise routine Men and women alike often get bored of the same old exercise routines and for the best results, exercise plans need to be changed regularly. Dave Brown at The Taro Leisure Centre says, “Plans can be adjusted so that you go on different machines or start using dumbbells instead. Another way to change your plans is to change your reps and sets.” By doing this the exercises stay the same, just the way you do them changes. To mix up your fitness program, Dave recommends the following techniques. “These are good to know about especially if for a weeks you feel a bit bored with your present workout, you can change your reps and sets, and then change back.” If you are going to change, check with an instructor first to make sure you are ready for a change. Super-sets: Super-sets are when you do an exercise straight after one another, with little or no rest what so ever. Each exercise is done with the opposing muscle done next, such as biceps and triceps, or chest and back.

Supersets help reduce the time taken to work out or put more exercise into a workout session. You must be in good form before trying this plan. Tri-sets: Tri-sets are three exercises for one muscle group. You have three separate exercises working different parts of the muscle, for example to work the chest you could do the fly on the bench, then do Inclined fly’s, and then do a chest press. Pyramids: Pyramids can be made up of different amount of reps but generally work the same. Start of with one x 12 with a weight that you fatigue on at 12. Add one or two plates then do one x eight. Add one or two plates then do two x four. Add one or two plates and do two x two. Make sure the last rep is ALMOST impossible to do. You must be very fit and have very good muscle strength before trying this plan.

This year saw local environmental project, Adhurst Estate Allotments fight off stiff competition to win our popular Green Initiative Life in Petersfield award. So with the weather ‘gradually’ improving we were keen to put our green fingers to use and find out more about this worthy scheme The allotments were first inspired in late 2011 when a group of people on the Petersfield Town Council’s allotment waiting list decided to come up with their own solution. Adhurst Estate Allottment chair, David Petch explains, “there were over 80 people on the waiting list and the lease was signed with the Adhurst Estate in March 2012. Thanks to grants from EHDC, the Town Council, South Downs National Park Authority and Roundtable two fields totalling 13 acres were taken on.” Tenants then worked together to install new gates, lay a track and car park, erect rabbit proof fencing and plant new hedges. “The Association has achieved everything solely through the efforts of tenants. Three areas have been prepared to date: an allotment area with 50 plots, 48 of which are already taken, an orchard area where people can rent a plot for a tree, with 130 trees already planted, and lastly a community 24

garden and orchard for people who want to grow their own but do not want a full allotment. The latter is run by The Good Life Community Project and provides sessions on gardening and fruit tree management.” Since starting the allotments have grown in popularity and to meet this demand a

Here Martin Cox of Adhurst Estate Allotments explains what can be gained from an alottment: I was asked by a number of family and friends “what are my aspirations for our allotment? ” I could have simply replied that I wish to provide fruit and fresh vegetables for my family and for others should there be a surplus. I could also have added that I wish to follow in the footsteps of my father and his father and other generations of Coxy’s and produce my own fresh fruit and veg (nb. I’ve long since given up the notion that producing your own might be a lot cheaper than popping down to the supermarket). But no, being a typical Aquarian and stretching my one brain cell to its limit, I came up with: “I am hoping that through the generosity of many, a spirit of cooperation and mutual support will be encouraged whereby our allotment becomes more than just a collection of vegetable patches gathered together in one place and in fact develops into a community, a collective enterprise where families and individuals who would otherwise have nothing in common gather together and help each other out without a second thought. One of the most common greenhouse pests, this minute creature feeds underneath the leaves causing flecking of the leaf surface, followed by the production of webbing and, gradually the browning and death of the leaves. The biological control A tiny red predatory mite which seeks out its prey. This mite eats red spider mite and even its eggs. Especially useful because there are many chemical resistant strains of red spider mite too.

General Grow Your Own Pests

Keep Your Garden Pest-free, Without Chemicals However careful you are, you are likely to come across pests in your garden or greenhouse. If you prefer to avoid using chemicals, try biological control. All this means is that you introduce natural enemies of these pests, and let them sort out your problems for you! There is an ever-increasing range of these fantastic ‘green’ controls available and between them they should be able to keep on top of many common pests. Biological controls like these pose no threat to humans, pets or wildlife and have many advantages, including: • Your conservatory pests can be controlled without the need for chemicals, something which is especially appealing in an area so close to the house and where you may well sit and eat or drink. • Biological controls are the ultimate green way to keep pests at bay – they are targeted to control the pest, but will not harm humans, pets or wildlife. • Many pests are now resistant to the commonly used garden insecticides, so however much you spray, they still won’t be controlled – biological control overcomes this. • It is extremely successful and many commercial growers of glasshouse crops use it because it works so well. • There are no problems with your vegetables, herbs or fruit being contaminated with any pesticide residues or contamination.

So what does it work for? Slugs Voted number one pest in 2012 by the RHS, the National Trust and most of us gardeners too! 26

The biological control A nematode drench called Nemaslug which goes into the soil and, without risk to anything else, kills off slugs – perfect if you grow potatoes and don’t want them tunnelled, love hostas, or perhaps just want some goodlooking plants in your garden this spring! Great used just as you plant out summer bedding or garden ready and plug plants.

Vine weevils These small matt black beetles cause lots of notches around leaf edges, but the real problem is their young – creamy coloured C-shaped grubs which feed on plant roots, especially those in containers and can kill off whole summer displays. The Biological control Nemasys for Vine Weevils, another nematode drench which is especially effective on plants in containers.

Glasshouse whitefly Resembling a minute moth when adult, both this and the young stages feed by sucking plant sap, so reducing vigour and causing distortion. Whitefly breed very rapidly and soon reach epidemic proportions. As they feed they excrete a liquid called honeydew which makes sticky patches on the leaves. The Biological Control A tiny wasp only about 0.6 mm long. When

Aphids These pests, commonly known as greenfly and blackfly, feed by sucking sap, so cause yellowing, weakening, distortion and may also spread lethal virus infections too. Like whitefly, aphids excrete sticky honeydew. The Biological Control The best way to sort out aphids is with a mixture of different controls. Between them they will do a great job of getting rid of greenfly and blackfly!

Tips for success These great, green options work brilliantly, but always make sure you follow the instructions carefully and remember you are dealing with living creatures, so they need to be treated properly! Petersfield hosts Life in Petersfield’s sixth annual Business and Community Awards The people of Petersfield gathered to celebrate the best of the town with the sixth Life in Petersfield Business and Community Awards on Friday 22 March at the Festival Hall. A top panel of local judges featuring Town Mayor, Mary Vincent, Head Girl at The Petersfield School, Alice Bezant, Tracey Richardson, from the Association of Petersfield Businesses, Marcus Hadlow, representing Churcher’s College, Alastair Stewart, Treasurer of The Petersfield Musical Festival, Cllr Julie Butler, East Hampshire District Council and Cllr Vaughan Clarke, East Hampshire District and Petersfield Town Council, faced the tough job of selecting winners for 14 of the awards. However, it was up

to the Life Awards audience to pick The Event of the Year on the night and after vigorous voting they went for the Jubilee Weekend. Sponsored by Bluebird Care, this year the awards also saw guests for the first time treated to a delicious two-course meal from Inside Catering, as well as the traditional range of fantastic performances. These featured the Petersfield Academy of Dance; the Petersfield School; Churcher’s Jazz Band; Eloise Keating and The Choir Company. Hosts Karen Sheppard, Regional Managing Director of Tindle News and Jo Barlow, Special Publications Manger, wished congratulations to the winners, to those who were highly commended,

Amazing Asparagus The 20-26 May is National Vegetarian Week and to celebrate weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been finding out some delicious recipes we can make at home with one of the seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite vegetables...Asparagus Pea and Asparagus Frittata, The Old Drum

Pea and Asparagus Frittata Serves 3-4 Ingredients 6 large free-range eggs 100g peas 8 asparagus spears 50ml double cream

20g butter Salt & pepper Method Blanche asparagus spears in boiling water and refresh in cold water. Break eggs into large bowl, add cream and whisk well. Add peas, asparagus, salt & pepper. Melt butter in large non-stick frying pan, add mixture and stir a couple of times so it resembles the start of scrambled eggs, taking care to pull mixture away from the edges. Method Preheat the oven to 200’C/gas 6 and line a 12 hole muffin tin with cases.

1/2 oz butter

Cut the asparagus stems into small pieces, about 1cm in length, leaving the tips a little longer and blanch in boiling water for a couple of minutes. Drain and refresh under cold running water, separating the tips from the pieces of stem. In a large bowl, mix the flour with the cubes of cheese.

5 tbsp white wine

Melt the butter and pour into a jug. Stir through the chives, milk, yogurt, mustard and eggs. Mix well until combined and season generously with salt & pepper.

Gently fold the wet ingredients into the flour & cheese, and stir through the asparagus stems. 5Spoon the mixture evenly between the muffin cases and push an asparagus tip into the middle of each. 2 shallots - finely chopped 10oz rice 1/2 pt vegetable stock 1 tbsp fresh parsley - chopped 1 tbsp fresh basil - chopped 2oz Italian-style grated cheese Method Cook asparagus until just tender and drain, reserving liquid. Cool asparagus in cold water. Skin tomatoes in boiling water and peel and chop. Cook shallots in oil and butter and add rice and stir until rice coated. Pour in wine and boil to reduce to halve liquid quantity. Make up reserved liquid to 1 pint with stock. Stir tomatoes into rice and gradually add stock. Sculptor Martyn Grubb has launched his latest collections of works ‘Fall of Man’ at Bedales School’s Gallery. The theme of the Exhibition is inspired by Martyn’s belief that modern man has lost his way, is rudderless and unsure as to how he fits into society. This exhibition showcases his thoughts through an illustration of man’s social and emotional plummet carved into materials including limestone, portland and scottish granite. Open to all, the exhibition at Bedales, follows a long tradition of support for the visual arts in general with past links with

artists and craftspeople of importance in this country (most notable is Julian Trevelyan, Ivan and Simon Hitchens, Stanley Spencer, Francis Bacon, Michael Kidner, Barry Flanagan and Sarah Raphael). Bedales School has been keen to support a sculptor carving in stone on campus. Year 10 St Swithun’s pupil Olivia Williams from Brockenhurst has been confirmed as the current UK Junior Ladies Barebow Metric Clout 90m record holder. Shooting at the Waterside Archers Clout competition held on the 3 March 2013 at Exbury, Olivia scored 223 points to overhaul the previous record by four points. Olivia, who has been shooting with the Hampshire Waterside Archers club for three years, had to wait several weeks for the confirmation from the Grand National Archery Society. Rock climbing trip for Ditcham pupils A group of nine Ditcham Park pupils accompanied by two members of staff, recently enjoyed a day’s rock climbing at Dancing Ledge in Swanage. The early signs were not good as the group travelled in torrential rain and hailstones en route to their destination. However, on arrival the sun came out and despite a chilly wind a full day’s climbing was accomplished. Under the expert guidance of Keith, the instructor, and Teacher, Mark Philips, himself a keen climber, everyone managed three climbs, including a scary abseil. Prior to the trip pupils had had the opportunity to tackle the climbing wall at Midhurst Rother Academy before taking on the real thing. Pupil Joe Chapman said: “The cliffs looked awfully daunting but we were eager to give them a go. The waves were enormous – we could even feel them from the top of the cliffs! No-one expected it to be so hard but after everyone had had a go and we had eaten our lunch we learned 40

how to abseil. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and can’t wait to, hopefully go again.” Mark Philips said: “I am very pleased with the way pupils took up this challenge.

Godalming College is opening its doors for young people and their parents, who are considering the College for entry in September 2014, on 10 July from 4pm – 8.30pm. The adventure starts here… The Royal School recently welcomed 35 boys to its second Adventure Day where they built dens, made fires, cooked camp food, took part in tribal games and created tree spirits. Farmyard fun The residents at Brownscombe House braved the weather to welcome in spring with a trip to the farm. Provided by the Mill Cottage Farm Experience, they got to hold and pet various farm animals from donkeys, week old lambs and to newly hatched chicks. District Council, Petersfield Community Hospital (NHS), DC Leisure and exercise specialist, Paula Haidon have developed a community based falls prevention exercise programme, the Steady and Strong community classes. Paula explains, “The good news is that the right type of exercise can make everyday tasks such as housework and shopping easier, while improving confidence and mood. In class we also talk about, and practice getting up from the floor in an event of a fall.” Since starting at the Taro Leisure Centre, Petersfield on Monday 9 May 2011, classes are now taking place at the Forest Community Centre Bordon and Alton Sports Centre. The Chase Hospital, Bordon and Alton Community Hospital also now play an active role with classes, referring their patients into the Steady and Strong community classes. Paula was recognised for her work with the Steady and Strong community classes at the Life in Petersfield Awards winning the Professional Community Support Award – see page 29 for complete review of the awards.

A new partnership formed between Help and Care, Citizens’ Advice Hampshire and Community Action Hampshire has been chosen to deliver the contract for Healthwatch across Hampshire. New support for local health and social care users A variety of new health organisations have just been set up to be the consumer champion for health and social care service users across Hampshire. Known as Healthwatch, the organisations will give people a stronger voice to challenge and influence how local services are planned and run. They will also provide information about local services and help people who want to make a complaint about NHS services.

Huntington House Nursing Home has just welcomed three new arrivals. Manager, Alison Ravandi has come to the home from Camberley, previously running Collingwood Grange Care Centre. In her new role she will be responsible for the welfare of their 38 residents and every aspect of the day-to-day running. Jacinta Grange-Bennett has been appointed to commission and manage Huntington House’s recent 28-bed dementia home, Langham Court. Finally, in addition to their new members of staff, Huntington House were pleased to announce their rare breed Ryeland sheep has had its first lambs.

Walk4Dreams 2012

A walk to remember This May hundreds of local residents will gather together to take part in the unique charity relay event Now in its third year, the Petersfield Walk4Dreams is a 12-hour relay walk event around the Pavilion Centre in The Avenue, designed to raise money and awareness for local causes and charities the event also helps the Petersfield Round Table raise funds for a nominated cause. “On the day, teams can walk for as long or as little as they are able, as long as one person from each team is on the course at any one point,” event creator, Andy Guest explains. “The event was first inspired by a desire to do more for the local community

and help some of the great charitable support groups available in Petersfield.” This year the Petersfield Round Table has chosen to support the Petersfield & Alton MS Society. “The charity is generally (not always) chosen as the Chairman’s charity of the year, we try to base the decision on how many families in the area our work can affect and projects they may require help with. A number of the Round Table members know someone who has Multiple Sclerosis either in the family or friends etc, we approached the local society who were happy to give us more information.” Since starting, Walk4Dreams has seen year on year team growth, raising over £2,500 in the first year and £4,000 in year two. The Round Table is attempting to raise £10k for MS Society Petersfield and Alton by getting involved in a number of swims, marathons and cycle events, as well as Walk4Dreams. “There are over 200 families in the Petersfield and Alton area affected by Multiple Sclerosis, the money raised allows the group to help provide resource for things such as Physiotherapy, provision of a hydraulic lifting devices and provision

of mobile phone for patients to be able to contact support workers.” As well as raising money for a good cause, Walk4Dreams has become a popular social event in the community’s calendar, featuring a bouncy castle, face painting for kids, cakes, BBQ and music. The Walk4Dreams also includes a number of speciality laps, such as egg and spoon, three legged lap, fancy dress and funny hat laps. “Anyone can take part, come along on the day and walk with the guys for a couple of hours, bring the kids for a few hours on the bouncy castle or just enjoy the cakes!”

of passions Running successful catering companies, cooking for royal families and joining forces with the BBC to create their new BBC Good Food Kitchen – it’s safe to say there isn’t much Paul McIntyre doesn’t know about food. However, despite his obvious talents, at the age of 24 Paul fell out of love with food and even searched for a career “as far as way from catering as possible.” Here we find out more about his relationship with food and discover what rekindled his passion Paul’s food journey started as a child when he would assist his mother in the kitchen. “She was a chef and I used to help her cook dinner from the age of around 10. By the time I got to 12 I used to cook tea for my father and two elder brothers after school.” When Paul was 14 he developed his cooking skills further working as a Commis Chef on weekends in his mum’s restaurant. “I went on to do a four year apprenticeship in the north west. I worked in many hotels and restaurants throughout Blackpool and Manchester, by the time I was 20 I was a Sous Chef and by 24 a Executive Chef running nine food outlets.” But at this point Paul had enough of food and went on the hunt for another career path. “I went off to join the Royal Navy as a deep sea rescue diver. But I was informed that the 50

Royal Navy was full and were not recruiting so I had to join the Army’s Royal Logistical Corps as a chef. I asked for a role as far away from catering as possible and ended up serving with the seventh Parachute Regiment RHA for eight years!” After travelling most of the world and being decorated four times, Paul was ready to get back in the kitchen and started his first catering company, Inside Catering. “I rented a kitchen in a small back street pub in Farnham and set up a small restaurant and when I had to set up a bank account for the business I was asked for a name, I explained that I cater inside a pub and there it created Inside Catering.” Inside Catering’s unique ethos focuses on honest, uncomplicated food, presented perfectly. “I have a rustic approach to cooking and try not to disguise flavours, a carrot is a carrot and therefore should taste like a carrot!” Provenance is particularly important to Paul, using seasonal and local produce wherever possible. “I am a firm believer in propping up the local economy by using artisan local suppliers as much as possible and steering clear of big brands that sell bland produce.” Another part of Paul’s role is providing consultancy to chefs for large events such as Masterchef Live, Taste of London, Taste of Christmas etc. Two years ago when working alongside two iconic London restaurants, Paul was inspired to start his next venture. “I was working with Roast of Borough Market

with chef Lawrence Keogh which provided staunchly British fayre and Cafe Spice Namaste with chef Cyrus Toddiwala which provided Indian food. One hot summers day stuck on the M25, I married the two together and Brindian was born.” Brindian offers a fusion of Iconic British and Indian dishes with added quirkiness and theatre to create fantastically vibrant cuisine with an impact. “We have dishes like a Slow Roast Pork Belly Naanwich with Piccolo Tomato and Chilli Relish, Scotch Duck Eggs with Date and Tamarind Pickle and Watercress Salad, Lamb Hotch Potch Aloo.” Unsurprisingly Paul’s mind is always bubbling with fresh food ideas and his latest project will see him convert an open top double Decker bus into a mobile restaurant/ event outlet called The Brindian Express. “The lower deck is a working kitchen whilst the upper deck is a cocktail bar area. It’s already booked in to some major events such as the Golf live and the Celebrity Cup, Carfest 2013 with Chris Evans, Jamie’s Feastival with Jamie Oliver and Alex James. I also plan to have the bus available for private hire for weddings and special events and also corporate hire, imagine a summer’s evening aboard the Brindian Express sipping gin cocktails, eating delicious brindian canapés whist being driven around London’s sights! It’s totally unique and something I am looking to grow quickly.”

Inside Paul’s world What is the best and worst thing about your job?

The best thing is the end result, when we cater for a wedding everything has flowed beautifully and the atmosphere is buzzing. I see the bride and groom before I go home and when the bride hugs you and says thank you for helping make our day perfect then it’s job done. The worst thing about my job is the M25 fact!!!

What has been your career highlight?

There has been so many to single out one, in the past I have cooked for prime ministers, the Royal Family, King Hassan II and many celebrities and recently I was involved in the Diamond Jubilee Regatta 2012 and the Olympic torch relay in Guildford, A VIP restaurant at Farnborough International Air show and catering for the Honda F1 team and Ferrari. I think the highlight so far is being asked by the BBC to join forces to create the BBC Good Food Kitchen which is a major feature in all the BBC Good Food Shows. We showcase the very best seasonal dishes from the BBC Good Food Magazine and add another dimension to the menus by trying to inspire visitors to recreate the dishes at home, more info can be found at www.bbcgoodfoodshowsummer.com

What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not cooking?

I love to run over the South Downs, a 14 mile run in the rain with 90s dance floor classics on my iPod is heaven, it creates clarity in a very busy head.

Who would be your dream person to cook for?

Tricky one, I would say Edmund Hillary, meeting him at base camp with steak, chips and a pint of real ale. Two years ago I trekked for three weeks through the Himalayas and up to base camp Everest and had every luxury I could muster, Edmund peaked Everest in 1953 wearing not much more than a tweed suit!

What is the best hangover food?

Bacon and fried egg sandwich with Tabasco, freshly squeezed orange juice, two bananas washed down with milky tea...you will be cured in no time.

What is your food heaven?

Lamb...my absolute favourite dish is pan fried noisette of lamb with a warm lentil, barley and split pea salad with crispy chips and Borello sauce.

And… hell?

Goats cheese, I can’t stand the stuff. When I was at secondary school we lived in Buxton, Derbyshire and I used to have to walk across the dales to get to school and nearly everyday I was chased across a field by the smelliest old goat you could ever believe, every time I use goats cheese I think of that goat! Master goldsmith celebrates 30 years of business 2013 sees local jeweller, Trevor Towner enjoy their 30th year of business in Petersfield. Starting life at a small shop in Heath Road in 1983, the company has gone from strength to strength over the past three decades and is now a key figure on the Petersfield High Street. Trevor explains: “The town has changed quite a bit in the last 30 years, and it has been tough at times, but we have always benefited from having our own workshop on the premises. “This allows you to build a stronger relationship and better understanding with the customer, as they are directly involved in each stage of the design and development of their jewellery.” Throughout his 30 years of business Trevor Towner has had many highlights, including gaining national recognition for his commemorative pieces marking milestone events in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. These have featured a limited edition silver thimble to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which featured a detailed depiction of the River Thames pageant. Mr Towner comments: “Designing items to

Specsavers Petersfield has introduced a new Hearcare service on Mondays and Thursdays. Revolutionising the hearing care market the store now offers customers free hearing tests, a range of state-of-theart digital hearing aids, hearing protection at work and useful information on hearing health.
