ou are invited to step resolutely into 2011, fortified by Life in Petersfield’s bundle of New Year goodies. What better way to start this year than to find the ‘feel good factor’? This is highlighted in the Health feature, swiftly followed by advice on complementing colours in the Style sector. With only six weeks to Valentine’s Day from the start of the year, there are tips on ‘what women want’ on the shopping page. Local food producers offer some recipes for comfort eating, and, to get you sitting comfortably, Petersfield interiors’ specialists offer tips to make your home feel warmer. There is a brand new feature called “Peter’s Field”, which opens with a cartoon. And we urge readers to send funny photographs, images and cartoons of their own. Life Magazines celebrated 2010 in a joint Christmas party with our parent company Navigate, attended by more than 100 clients and friends. Now we are looking forward to the New Year with enthusiasm. Stay with us for an enjoyable ride.

Stress free
Feel good factor The New Year is a time to relax and recover from the busy festive season, get fit after indulging at Christmas, reflect on the past and start the year a fresh. Life in Petersfield investigates ways to take a little ‘me time’ and just feel good
In this day and age, there is a lot of reason to feel stressed or low. The eight-week Mindfulness Course for Stress Reduction might be a solution for people who are feeling drained from last year, or anxious about the year to come. The Mindfulness Course is to assist in taking better care of yourself and getting more out of living. The aim is to learn new ways to handle challenging physical sensations, emotions, moods or social interactions. The course consists of deep relaxation techniques, simple but deep yoga movements and meditation. Susan Rooke, the course leader who is certified by the Centre of Mindfulness Research and Practice, says that meditation is a chance to sit down and allow you to do nothing at all. “If you shake up apple juice, it becomes cloudy,” she says. “If you leave it to sit for a while, all the sediment falls to the bottom and the juice becomes clear.” “Over the eight weeks you will learn how to relax and build up concrete tools for how to deal with stress. It could lead to feeling less stuck, seeing more options and having more confidence”, says Susan. People with chronic pain, multiple sclerosis (MS), depression, sleep problems and headaches have benefited from this stress clinic. “The Stress Reduction Program was developed in hospitals in America and health professionals have referred patients with MS, chronic pain, depression, sleep problems and head aches to the course”, says Susan. The next session is at the Alton and Petersfield Community Centre in February. Mindfulness Course, 01730 895430, susanrooke7@gmail.com

Colour for all seasons Life Magazines’ Jackie Barnett discovers how to make the most of her natural colours when buying clothes and make-up dvertising Manager Jackie Barnett, who always wears black, went to the Black Swan Make Up Studio in Liss for a full colour consultation. Image and colour consultants look at an individual’s depth, clarity and undertone to find out which colours complement her (or his) natural colourings. Black Swan’s Amanda Moore, a qualified image consultant and make-up artist, uses the four seasons technique. This is a face-to-face consultation, using scientific analysis of an individual's natural colouring to discover personal colour palettes. She explains that the analysis

identifies a palette of colours to harmonize with the natural colouring in an individual’s hair, skin and eyes – “the colour a person wears is the very first thing we notice”. She adds: “Colour also lends an emotional response to first impressions which shape, size, and style cannot. It quite literally colours our perceptions.” “Knowing exactly which colours complement a person can improve their appearance by harmonizing with their natural colours. ‘Risk Doctor’ wins world renown Petersfield’s global expert in risk management has received two international awards
D
10
He defines risk as: “Uncertainty that matters. All other definitions are variations on this phrase (usually with more words!). So all risks are uncertain because they may never happen (though not all uncertainties are risks), and all risks matter because if they happened they would have a material effect on achievement of one or more objectives. “ David Hillson has a scholarly and softly spoken manner, but he exudes great warmth and wit. A man of the world, he has worked in 43 countries and on every continent except Antarctica, providing support to clients in all major industry sectors.
“

“
avid Hillson, known worldwide as ‘The Risk Doctor’, has won the inaugural award as “Risk Personality of the Year” for 2010. This award, by the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) and Risk Management Professional magazine, honours the individual who contributes most to improving risk knowledge and standards, promoting the message of strong risk management, and inspiring their peers. In the words of the judges Dr Hillson is “a larger-than-life character, who has become a well-known brand”. His other award is a fellowship of the Project Management Institute, the PMI’s highest individual honour and the only one awarded in 2010. Having moved to Petersfield with his wife Liz more than 30 years ago, he became involved in risk management in 1983 while working at Ferranti in Portsmouth. “The company was instructed by the MoD to use risk management in a £30 million defence contract; but we didn’t know much about it, so I was detailed to try it out.” The project was a big success, and David Hillson was on the road to becoming ‘The Risk Doctor’. In 1993 he left Ferranti and after working for two specialist consultancies he set up his Risk Doctor consultancy, which now has 20 expert partners across the globe. Risk management may sound like a dry and cerebral subject but this is a “larger-than-life” discipline which affects everybody. “Every client is different,” David said. “The core message is that the future is uncertain, but we can do something about it. “To succeed we have to deal with uncertainty. While uncertainty is a threat it also offers opportunities, and risk management is all about using and exploiting that. I provide the forward-looking radar to look into the future and help people take appropriate action.”
As well as giving strategic advice to corporates, he is interested in applying the risk management approach to communities, for example in developing entrepreneurship in local community groups. His clients range from corporates such as BP and NASA to a township in South Africa and a village community in Ghana. “When I undertake a big job I try to make sure that I also meet local people and see what I can do on the ground.” Married for 32 years, David and Liz have two daughters who were raised in Petersfield – one is a biochemist in Cardiff, the other a
David Hillson (centre) receives the “Risk Personality of the Year” award from actor Chris Barrie (Rimmer in Red Dwarf and Mr Brittas in BBC TV’s The Brittas Empire) at a gala dinner in London with Steve Good, Marketing Manager of Risk Management Professional magazine, on his right children’s nurse in Sydney. His interests outside risk management include active participation in Christianity, music, the community, and travel. “We came to Petersfield in 1979 to start a new community-based Christian church, which has become an active part of the faith community in the town,” he said. “We are now working with a new church in Greatham that was started four years ago.” As well as his work in local churches, he is also a much-published author on risk management – with eight major books and over 100 journal papers and articles. And he is a keen musician having trained on brass instruments at Trinity College of Music in London. He has switched to the keyboards and plays in bands at weddings and gigs. “I would love to become a better jazz pianist, but you need time to practise,” he said with a wry smile. “And I want to travel more, especially in South America.” The Risk Doctor, www.risk-doctor.com L Issue 26 January/February 2011

Our many friends and clients included: Town Mayor Chris Jenner and his wife Pollyanna and their daughter Lowrie; Phil Gadd and Mark Willcox from Portsmouth International Port; and Phil Bates (“Mr Grayshott”), a trustee of Grayshott Pottery; Rob Reynolds, from Bedales Schools; and Penny Guy from The Passenger Shipping Association. And we were pleased to welcome Martin Smith and his wife Julia, whose company Designline merged with Navigate in the summer. Petersfield town councillor and former mayor Paul Molloy summed up the evening: “Many thanks for inviting me to your event. I thoroughly enjoyed it …it's always great to hear of successful Petersfield businesses. Even better when it concerns Navigate and Lifemags. Really liked the office set-up and got a chance to talk to some of your staff - who are all clearly very happy … “

Russell, a Transpersonal Councillor and Physiotherapist, says: “These tribes use song in everyday life to tell stories, to express emotion, and to communicate. I want to know what happens when a white man sings back.” Word spread quickly of the ‘White Man that would sing’ and hundreds of people turned up to greet them, some travelling up to 45km from their villages. “They had never seen anything like this before,” explains Russell. “These are very traditional people;

every song in the Maasai tribe has a meaning and purpose. Improvisation is foreign to them. “Once I explained that my songs were to express our gratitude for their hospitality, and that we wanted to learn from them, the songs made more sense to them. Pamper, listen, take trouble Laura Cummins, Leisure Manager at Meon Valley Travel, knows exactly what women want for Valentine’s Day:
You can’t go wrong with a romantic dinner out beside a log fire. The Bluebell at Cocking offer freshly prepared meals and pride themselves on excellent service and an eye to detail. You could even spend the night in one of their boutique rooms “Our rooms are very comfortable, stylish and elegant,” says Julia, Owner and Manager.

“Guys, what women really want is you and your time: our survey says the top three things women want are: 1. To be pampered. Every woman loves to be pampered, so plan a day or evening that caters to her – whether it’s a bubble bath and a cup of tea, a curry and the Sex and the City boxset or a back and foot massage with her favourite glass of wine. 2. Prove you heard what she said. It’s very easy to listen but not actually hear. Women drop constant clues about what they want throughout the day in normal conversation. You can make Valentine’s Day really memorable if you listen. 3. Show some effort. We want to know that you put some effort in; it’s not about how much money you spend, but on how much time you spent in preparation.”

Canny culinary tips Start the New Year with some culinary tips up your sleeve. By Geraldine Keith 1. Stand-bys in the freezer • Leftover white bread for bread-sauce, force meat, crumb toppings, etc. • Bags of parsley. Use straight from the freezer when required. • Crumble. Make double the amount of crumble and freeze half. 2. Rest roasted meat When cooked, take the meat from the oven, cover with tin foil and a thick cloth and leave for at least 20 minutes. The meat will relax and be wonderfully tender. Even the most expensive cut of meat will be tough if you carve it straight from the oven. 3. Taste the difference Taste frequently at every stage of cooking. Most amateur cooks don’t taste enough. • Don’t over-season; you can add more, you can’t take away. • Experiment with herbs and spices. • If food lacks flavour and you have checked the salt, add lemon juice - it’s a real flavour-enhancer. • Nutmeg enhances almost everything , except tomatoes.

Where there’s a Will, there’s a way...
Hands up... Hands up... Tax Returns 2010 2010 Tax Returns
The statistics
It is currently recorded that fewer than 25% of people with dependent children have made a Will. Almost 80% of couples living together, without Patrick Jenkins, a Partner at MacDonald Oates LLP’s being married or in a civil partnership have no Petersfield office Will. Of these, 38% have dependent children. These people are taking the risk that, in the event of their death, they will die ‘intestate’ without any certainty as to how their Estate will be distributed.
Intestacy
If someone dies without having a valid will in place, the law sets out who may deal with the deceased’s affairs but also, more importantly, who should inherit their Estate (i.e. their property, personal possessions and money). This can leave loved ones in an extremely difficult situation.
Will Aid
MacDonald Oates work as part of the ‘Will Aid’ scheme to encourage those people without wills to make an appointment with us, at no fee, to draw up a basic will. Will Aid is a scheme designed to raise much-needed funds for nine of the UK’s best-loved charities. All we ask is that you make a donation to the Will Aid charities. We have recently taken part in this scheme which runs through the month of November each year to raise awareness across the UK as to the importance of having a well drafted will.

Your chance to WIN
Sarah Evans
One month’s full membership, a sixsession Vibration course and one beauty treatment up to the value of £50! Answer these three questions correctly:
Debbie and Gaynor
How do we succeed in 2011 and stick to our New Year’s healthy living resolutions? Gaynor Oakes, co-owner of The Fitness Barn, believes she has the answer “
e put emphasis on caring for our clients and have a friendly, unintimidating approach to exercise. We understand how important it is to have fun whilst keeping fit and healthy and knowing how difficult it is to stay motivated. At the end of the day we all have times when the thought of exercise fills us with dread but our customers know they will be welcomed at The Fitness Barn with a smile, an understanding friendly face and the knowledge their efforts don’t go unnoticed.” 2011 is definitely a good time to try out new innovative ways to exercise. Too many January exercisers fall at the first hurdle because of boredom, slow progress and time restraints. This is where Gaynor Oakes and Debbie Avis know they

have the answer. “All you need is twice weekly 20 minute sessions on one of our four vibration training plates to burn fat, lose weight, change shape or tone up muscle. Not only that, these incredible machines improve your circulation, reduces cellulite, increase bone density, flexibility and joint mobility.” says Debbie. Gaynor and Debbie offer professional fitness advice when using these commercial machines, with built in programmes, powerful settings and larger more robust platforms. Priority Beauty Studio has recently moved into The Fitness Barn and the two businesses work nicely together from the same premises. Priority Beauty Studio, run by Sarah Evans, offers a wide range of treatments. In January, Sarah is encouraging people to get more ‘me time’ with fantastic
offers, “One hour of ‘me time’ will include a back, neck and shoulder massage and a manicure for £30,” says Sarah. She’s also helping clients to look after their skin with a 45-minute PRIORI® Facial for £25 or you could have all three treatments for £50. The Fitness Barn offers various membership packages which include their extensive studio classes plus the vibration training plates. Also available are six-week vibration courses. With just three people to a class it offers a personal approach to exercise but on an affordable budget, from as little as £8. These class courses are all designed with specific fitness goals in mind e.g. ski fit, weight loss, Pilates, flexibility, post natal, total body and many more. Just get in touch for more details and times. Book now as spaces will fill up fast.
