The Khosrovanis Go All in When It Comes to Their Causes
M
ehdi and Rosemary Khosrovani met at Roger Williams University in the late 1970s. Mehdi had traveled almost 6,000 miles from Iran to study architecture. Rosemary, a native of New York City, was pursuing a degree in accounting. “I saw this beautiful woman on campus,” says Mehdi of his wife, who acknowledges the compliment with a smile. As they talk about philanthropy, building a brighter future for at-risk children, and their dedication to Bradley Hospital, it’s clear that Mehdi and Rosemary are not only a loving couple. They’re a team. “Everything we do, we do together,” says Mehdi. “We’re partners.” The couple serve on Bradley Hospital Foundation boards— he’s a trustee, she’s a governor. They share professional lives—he is president and founder of n|e|m|d architects, inc., she’s the chief financial officer. Both brim with pride for their 28-year-old son, Christopher, a senior account manager for Reddit. And they’re of one mind when it comes to the organizations they champion, including Bradley and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence. “When we commit to a cause, we do it together,” says Rosemary. “It’s not just about putting something on your resume. It’s about being vocal advocates, donating your time, treasure, and effort to the cause.” The Khosrovanis found a passionate cause in Bradley Hospital after meeting hospital President Dan Wall on the golf course four years ago. Dan took the couple on a tour of the hospital, which made a profound impression.

“To see a place so welcoming to the children and their families, the comforting spaces, and the way the staff relates to everyone, supporting Bradley Hospital was a natural decision for us,” says Mehdi. “It’s an amazing place.” The couple became donors through Bradley’s annual golf tournament. As members of the Bravo Bradley event committee, they are generous gala sponsors and supporters, as well. “Rosemary and Mehdi bring great charm to their advocacy,” says Dan. “They are gracious and generous people, and their concern for children is so real you can feel it. They radiate with fresh ideas and bring new people to the table. We are so lucky to have their support.” Looking to the future, the couple hope to attract more Bravo Bradley sponsors and donors from outside of Rhode Island. “We tell people about Bradley Hospital and they tell others, and we can only hope that they’ll become involved as well,” says Rosemary. “We want to open people’s eyes to the amazing work Bradley Hospital does.”
Mental Health First Aid Teaches How to Respond in a Crisis
J
ust one week after she completed Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training—a program offered jointly by Bradley Hospital and Gateway Healthcare—a “first-aider” named Chris had an opportunity to apply her learning.
She noticed a young neighbor outside her apartment looking deeply distressed. The 17-year-old was agitated, pacing back and forth and speaking rapidly to herself, possibly hallucinating. Chris approached the girl to offer support. “Can I help? Is there someone I can call for you?” she asked, ultimately phoning the girl’s parents, sharing her concerns, and suggesting they contact their daughter’s primary care doctor for the professional help she needed. The next day, Chris found a note on her car. ‘Thank you so much,’ the teen wrote. ‘You made a difference yesterday.’ “It gave me goose bumps,” says Kimberly Lafountain, LMHC, an instructor and the MHFA program coordinator. “Chris said that if it hadn’t been for the training, she might have taken a wrong step or not stepped in at all. And then who knows what might have happened.” Kim says the MHFA courses fill up quickly year-round as more people want to know how to respond to a mental health crisis. First-aiders learn a five-step strategy that includes assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help and other supports. Classes teach both adult and youth interventions. “People are talking more about mental illness,” says Kim. “They want to be effective in a crisis. They want to make a difference.”
Innovative Partnership Propels Research Forward
T
he Rhode Island Consortium for Autism Research and Treatment (RI-CART) recently reached a milestone in its enrollment of Rhode Islanders with autism spectrum disorders in a statewide patient registry.
RI-CART is a joint effort of Bradley Hospital, Women and Infants Hospital, and Brown University to accelerate research on autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and developmental disabilities. The patient registry, launched in 2013, collects biological samples along with information about symptoms, diagnoses, and demographic information. Carrie Best, MPH, a RI-CART research coordinator at Bradley, says there are now 1,600 individuals with ASD taking part in the registry. “We have patients enrolled from nearly every zip code in the state,” says Carrie, noting that the registry provides unparalleled depth and geographic representation of the ASD population. Researchers use registry data to ask questions about the genetics of autism as well as to recruit patients for new studies. One such study is developing novel ways to measure treatment responses in young children with ASD. Researchers were able to recruit study participants from the RI-CART registry in half the time it usually takes for study recruitment. “RI-CART is collaboration in the truest sense of the word; a partnership between researchers, across institutions, and with families and the community,” explains co-investigator Stephen Sheinkopf, PhD. “We are on the ground floor of figuring out so much we don’t know about autism that will one day have a real impact on diagnosis and treatment for so many.”
