A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery Core Foundations of Health You’ve probably heard of the phrase, “you are what you eat”. This old adage is the notion that to be fit and healthy you need to eat good food. However, health is more than just what we eat and how we exercise. Health is multidimensional and encompasses a wide range of your daily habits, lifestyle and actions. Some of those specific core foundations that impact our health include nutrition, movement, mindset, community, sleep and stress management. ▪ ▪ ▪
Nutrition: Food can be fuel, it can be consumed for fun, and it also plays a vital function in almost every system in the body. Aim for variety and quality most of the time.
MONTHLY WELLNESS TIPS 1. 2.
▪
Community: Build a strong support system of family, friends and other bariatric patients.
▪
Sleep: Sleep is an essential function that allows your body and mind to recharge. Sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night.
▪
Stress Management: Chronic levels of stress may cause an increase in headaches, sleeplessness, higher blood sugar and blood pressure, depressed immune system and upset stomach. Ensure you have healthy stress coping habits.
As you continue on your journey to living well, aim to find harmony between these core foundations.
Try to maintain a positive attitude to support your resilience as you continue your wellness journey
3.
Move your body! Avoid using exercise as a form of compensation for a poor diet
Movement: Be grateful for the ability to move your body in ways that you enjoy. Don’t utilize exercise as punishment for “bad” food choices. Mindset: Engage in mindfulness. It has been shown to relieve stress, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, improve eating behaviors and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties.
Focus more on your overall health
4. 5.
Pay attention to your hunger and satiety cues Remember that small changes can really add up and lead to big results
