A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery ADDED SUGAR INCREASES THE RISK OF CHRONIC DISEASE The debate over the health effects of sugar has gone on far many years.

Sugar is found naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, and dairy. Consuming whole foods that contain natural sugar is okay. These foods provide high amounts of fiber, essential minerals, protein and antioxidants. Your body is able to slowly digest these foods and provide a slow and steady release of energy to your cells.

Additionally, a high intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains reduces the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers.

However, eating too much added sugar has a negative impact on your health. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that less than 10 percent of daily calories come from added sugars. For a 2,000 calorie diet, that is 200 calories which is about 12 teaspoons (or 50 grams) of sugar. A 15-year study published in 2014 in JAMA Internal Medicine found that people who got 17 to 20 percent of their calories from added sugar had a 38 percent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with those who consumed 8% of their calories as added sugar. Other studies have also found that a diet high in added sugar increases chronic inflammation, raises blood pressure and contributes to weight gain. To reduce your intake of added sugars, read food labels, avoid sugary beverages and become familiar with the many names for added sugar, such as evaporated cane juice and invert sugar. As a rule of thumb, bariatric patients should limit added sugar to no more than 5 grams per serving size.

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Berry Chia Pudding from www.yummymummykitchen.com Ingredients & Materials Needed: • 5 tablespoons chia seeds • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk • 4 drops of liquid stevia • 1 cup raspberries, strawberries, or a combination • 1 cup blueberries • 1/4 cup sliced toasted almonds, for serving • a few fresh berries, for serving Instructions: 1. In a quart sized jar or storage bowl, stir together the chia seeds, almond milk, and sweetener. Let sit and gel for about 10 minutes. Stir again, cover and store in the refrigerator overnight.

2. Meanwhile, make the berry sauce: Place the berries in a small sauce pan. Add about 1/4 cup of water to the pan, bring to a low simmer, and cover. Stir every so often and break up the berries with a wooden spoon or spatula. Uncover and let the berries stew until they form a nice thick sauce. Add more water as needed if it dries out. Transfer to storage bowls and let cool, then store in the refrigerator.

3. To serve, assemble the chia pudding and berry sauces in layers in jars, or in a bowl. Top with almonds and fresh berries.
