CRAZY ABOUT CARS? SO WAS ANDY WARHOL. The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale partnered with PNC Bank to present Warhol and Cars: American Icons, bringing more than 40 distinctive pieces of art to South Florida. This is the first exhibition to examine Warhol’s fascination with automotive vehicles as products of American consumer society, making it
a must-see for art and car fanatics alike. The Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey organized the exhibition, which traces the development of Warhol’s work with cars throughout his career. Warhol and Cars pieces date all the way back to 1946 and include early line drawings and 1950s commercial work, paintings, and works on paper from the 1960s through the 1980s that present his signature silkscreen process.

PEOPLE DON’T LIKE TO EXERCISE This can’t be overstated. Sure, a fraction of the population enjoys exercise, myself included. But even we don’t enjoy the actual work. It’s the payoff that we crave: looking and feeling better. I associate it with an actual job: You punch the clock, suffer through your work week, and collect your check on Friday. So clients come up with all kinds of creative ways to cancel a session (that is, skipping out on work). My favorite: The women who come to the gym after doing their hair and tell me, “I will work out but I can’t sweat right now.”

SETTING UNREALISTIC GOALS A common consultation question is, “What do you believe to be your ideal weight?” A 170-pound middle-aged woman will answerme, “120 pounds.” My next question is, “Have you ever weighed that in your adult life?” The answer…NO! Guess what? That’s an unrealistic goal. People spend years destroying the

Executives Reflect on Recession, Bullish on Future BY JEFF ZBAR
BIG TICKET RECOVERY Need a barometer for how the economy is performing? Ask an auto dealer. “Big ticket” items like luxury cars can be the first to hit the brakes when the economy serves up potholes and barricades. Jim Dunn knows this. Yet, as vice president and general manager of JM Lexus, Dunn saw 2012 end with a 15 percent increase in business over a year ago. That tally – projected to reach 5,000 vehicles at yearend 2012 – is up significantly from the 3,996 cars sold in 2009, yet still down from the 2008 peak of 7,722, he says. With more than 40 years in the automotive business, Dunn knows how to ride out tough times – and that’s not by idling. He’s instituted innovation and rallied the team around a mantra of doing more with less. The business has installed numerous solar arrays to improve
environmental efficiency and cost savings. A new sub-company, JM Custom Creations, customizes new cars and customers’ existing vehicles. An LS 460, for example, is “wrapped” in an all-chrome wrap. Combining its product and marketing, that LS 460 has 9,600 “Likes” on Facebook. In fact, the company’s social media plan has delivered 23,000 Friends for JM

AS GERRY GREENSPOON REFLECTS ON HIS LAW FIRM – GREENSPOON MARDER – AND HOW IT ENDURED THE RECESSION, HE ADMITS TO BEING BUSIER THAN EVER. THOUGH NOT FOR THE REASONS SOME MAY THINK. The firm acquired the venerable-yet-bankrupt law firm Ruden McClosky in a $7.8 million deal that industry publication Dow Jones Bankruptcy Review called “the first known sale of a still-operating law firm under Chapter 11.” With operations sustained and lawyers and “We see a very bright support staff retained, Greenspoon enters year even as we still 2013, “extremely optimistic. “We see a very bright year even as we still struggle through the struggle through the current economics,” says current economics.” Greenspoon, whom The Wall Street Journal called “an innovator in the legal profession.” Across South Florida, executives with professional service and technology firms, retailers, auto dealers and banks are seeing bright tidings on the horizon. To be sure, the recession was the most challenging many have seen in their careers, and most are cautious in their optimism. But a focus on core business principals, client or customer service, and long hours invested in innovation has positioned many for success in the years ahead.

TEKPARTNERS Lexus – the most of any Lexus dealer in the world, he says. The company is the world’s largest Lexus dealer – with a 300 car lead on the next largest dealer. It was the belief of Jim Moran, the company’s founder who died in 2007: Be the best and the biggest. “We have that in our DNA,” Dunn says, calling his team’s performance nothing less than “an amazing job.” “I’m happy to say we are rapidly moving away from [the recession] and we are back in the expansion mode,” Dunn says. “I believe we are solidly in recovery.” Looking forward, Dunn sees continued recovery. Some 10 percent growth should result in 5,500 cars sales by year-end 2013 – with the pre-owned business continuing at “dramatically” increased levels, he says. His prediction for two years out? “I believe in 2015 we will return to prerecession level,” Dunn says. FROM EMPLOYEES TO CONSULTANTS Selling cars during an economic slump can be challenging. Providing professional and recruiting services to the information technology and communications community – which itself struggled during the recession – can be a sink-or-swim test. Harris Katz chose to swim. Along with co-CEO Vito Scutero, Katz is uniquely suited to look at lessons learned in 2012 – and sense optimism for the year ahead. In fact, the company – which has 100 employees in five offices in Virginia, North Carolina and its Coral Springs headquarters – never slowed. Last year was “a huge year for us,” Katz says. The company tallied more than $65 in revenue in what was its 10th year in business. “Every year we beat the previous year,” he says. How? By building and nurturing relationships with candidates and clients alike. In his recruiting business, Katz works with and lends career advice to high-level professionals who sometimes have few other sounding boards. “Who do they talk to about their careers?” Katz asks. He then answers his own question: “Their spouse or best

VITO SCUTERO & HARRIS KATZ friend, and if someone has earned the right, maybe their recruiter.” To be sure, with a decade under their belt, Katz and Scutero have felt the effects of recession before. Back in 2002, companies were letting go of their internal workforce to survive; 2009 was a repeat. The duo looked in the mirror and said, “OK, this is how the company got formed. We can’t let go of our key asset: our associates,” he recalls. The two devised a strategy called “dash for cash.” They told everyone in the company: If we build revenue by just $1 over the previous year, everyone – from the receptionist to the top recruiter – would get $1,000. “And we did it,” he says. By the third quarter 2009, business had returned. It helped that companies weren’t hiring employees, but they were hiring consultants. TekPartners gained market share from its competitors. “I always say 2009 was the game-changer for us,” he recalls. Though he’s “100 percent concerned” about rising taxes, Katz is a realist who views that as “yesterday’s news.” And since he already provides healthcare to his associates, Katz is undeterred by others’ fears of the “Obamacare.” In fact, the healthcare sector could be a prime growth market for the company. Growth is the operative word. They plan to have 150 associates by year-end 2013 – and to top $150 million in revenue within the next three years.

A MUTUAL RECOVERY David Schulman entered the insurance business in 1975, by 1980 was named the youngest general agent ever with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Fort Lauderdale – and by 1996, his DBS Financial Group was a top-five MassMutual agency nationwide. Along the way, he’s seen business cycles – from troughs to recoveries. He knows South Florida continues to feel the lingering impacts of both. “We are still feeling the effects of the recession, but it’s somewhat receding in the background,” says Schulman, an industry veteran who also serves as president of the MassMutual General Agents Executive Committee and is a member of the Million Dollar Round Table. “Our business was very good, and that’s because of the nature of what we do and the way we do it.” The “way we do it” speaks to how Schulman addresses his client’s worries. People remain more concerned, as he put it, “about a return of their money rather than a return on their money. That plays into our strong suit of what our firm specializes in and our products. That’s why we had a strong year.” With continued recovery on the horizon, Schulman is planning for growth. He grew to 130 representatives selling insurance and annuities in the tricounty area – with a plan to hit 150 by next year, he says. He grew by 3,000 feet the firm’s primary space in Fort Lauderdale. They’ll open a Miami-Dade County office later in 2013. Cautious growth dovetails well with his clients’ needs, Schulman says. Most have money – and need secure investment vehicles. The local dynamics – with real estate improving, tourism growing and strong Latin American markets offering options – make for “a stronger economy in South Florida,” he says. It’s also changing the regional investment landscape. “More and more individuals in Latin America look to Broward County if they are looking for a second home, as opposed

“Even though the cost of doing business is going up, I believe the opportunities are going up. We’re never complacent,” he says. “I definitely feel we are in a good spot.”

to solely in Miami-Dade,” he says. “If Latin America is strong, it helps MiamiDade and it helps Broward as well.” Like Katz with TekPartners, Schulman remains concerned about taxes. The consensus is they will be going up, he says, “but the question is which taxes.” Regardless of the tax bracket, rather than worry – plan for things you can control, he says. “If you have your financial house in order, and over the long haul you’ve done some sound financial planning for yourself and your family, that’s what you can control,” he says. “What we see all too often is that instead of making plans, people freeze like a deer in the headlights. If the deer freezes it is going to die, but if it goes forward or turns back, it will be fine.” BANKING ON A RECOVERY Like other executives, Bruce Kier wears no rose-colored shades when he views the South Florida economy. Sure, the founder, president and CEO of Community Bank of Broward and veteran banker who traces his career back to being named the youngest president and CEO of Barnett Bank, believes recovery has arrived. He characterizes the market as “definitely improving.” More than any other industry in South Florida, Kier’s business may be considered the real barometer of the local market’s economic health. At the same time, housing has become more affordable – that is, if there are any houses to be bought. “If you look at Weston, there are no houses for sale there. As soon as they come on the market, they are snapped up,” he says. “The same holds true for commercial real estate prices. They are not bottoming out. So it is a muchimproved environment.” Broward’s unemployment rate is down and falling. Yet, negative population growth had cast a pall – if slight – on any recovery. “Our economy is based on population growth,” he admits. “Our economy was always better than the rest of the country because we have more people moving to Florida, so it stands to reason you needed more restaurants, more banks, et cetera. That stopped for two or three years. But we are back into a population growth now. That’s critical.” Like Greenspoon, Dunn, Katz and Schulman, Kier is optimistic for the year ahead. All the measures – property values, job and population growth, even increased tourism and trade with the expansion of the Panama Canal – offer signs of an improved economy. “Remember, Florida got into the recession before the rest of the nation,” he says, “and it stands to reason we will get out of it sooner.”

The Greenspoon Marder Foundation will raise funds for charitable causes specifically within Florida. If, as Schulman says, those who have should give, Greenspoon agrees. “We feel it’s our obligation – and our pleasure – to give back,” says Greenspoon, who – after a year filled with intense negotiations to acquire is looking forward to time with family, including a new granddaughter.

Vrins was introduced to Covenant House Florida at the 2011 “Night of Broadway Stars.” He not only experienced the excitement of the live Broadway show, but through resident testimonials, he also glimpsed the challenges and often-painful upbringing of the teens and young adults housed at the Covenant House shelter. He decided to make a difference by approaching his company to support the organization.

In South Florida, Covenant House opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1985 and expanded to Orlando in 1995. Last year, the organization reached more than 200 teens a day via street outreach, crisis shelters, transitional housing projects, and walk-in services, making it one of the largest private agencies serving runaway and homeless youth in the state of Florida.

ou might say that Junior Achievement “infuses the entrepreneurial spirit in young people throughout America.” And Junior Achievement of South Florida’s Coconut Creek JA World is home to the largest JA facility in the world – dedicated to educating the community, children, and adults about the free enterprise system. “This facility serves the greatest number of students of any JA in the United States with similar building and programs, and provides a wonderful model for all other JA areas,” said Melissa Aiello, president of Junior Achievement of South Florida. With their mission to “ensure that every child in America has a fundamental

understanding of the Free Enterprise System,” the organization has a remarkable history. It was founded in 1919 by Theodore Vail, president of American Telephone & Telegraph; Horace Moses, president of Strathmore Paper Co.; and Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts. Their first program, called The Company Program, was offered to high school students on an after-school basis. In 1975, the organization entered the classroom with the introduction of Project Business for the middle grades. In the last 25 years, Junior Achievement has gradually expanded its activities and broadened its scope to encompass an ever-widening student population. Junior Achievement of South Florida was founded locally in 1959 by the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club and served just 373 high school students during its first year. Programs now span grades K-12, with age-appropriate curricula designed to teach elementary students about their roles as individuals, workers, and consumers and to prepare middle grade and high school students for key economic and workforce issues they will face. Junior Achievement programs reached 48,000 Broward and South Palm Beach County students during the 2011-2012 school year. Thanks to the support of some remarkable philanthropists, all of whom

xactly 30 years ago, Robin and Mark Levinson decided to get married and go into business for themselves. It was a scary time. For about four hours. “We were broke,” Robin says flatly. “We were just starting out, and it was pretty daunting.” In 1983, Robin and Mark opened a tiny booth – just four display cases – in a now-defunct jewelry exchange in Plantation. But even then they were thinking big. “We put all our savings into this one necklace,” Robin says. “And it sold the first day for $3,500. In fact, it was the very first sale we had. We flipped out! That’s how it all began.” And here’s where it’s taken them so far: Levinson Jewelers has its headquarters on Las Olas Boulevard and a list of celebrity customers that most famously includes record-setting quarterback Dan Marino (who they later hired as a spokesman – yes, he was a customer first). And the man who bought that first necklace? He’s still a customer himself. Dr. Paul Berger is a periodontist in Key Largo who practiced for 40 years in Plantation. When he walked into that jewelry exchange 30 years ago, there were many booths to choose from. “There were a lot of choices,” Dr. Berger recalls. “But Robin and Mark were very special people, and they had this one piece of jewelry that was very nice. So I said, “Here’s my credit card’ – but they didn’t have a credit card machine yet!” Undaunted, Dr. Berger told them he’d return in a few hours. “I could tell they were thinking, ‘Sure he will.’ But I came back that same day with a check.” And Dr. Berger keeps coming back. “I still go there. I got my wife’s wedding band there,” he says. “I trust Robin with helping me choose things, so that’s where we go.” Robin is Levinson’s secret weapon, says John D’Amico,
the company’s vice president of operations. “We call her the psychic jeweler,” he says proudly – although when he says it in front of Robin, she gets a little embarrassed. 888 E. He says Fort Lauderdale, FL the success of both the business 33301 and the marriage is a simple (954) 462-8880 principle: “We do different things, levinsonjewelers.com but we talk about everything.” So Mark, whose background was in buying loose stones, runs the behind-the-scenes nitty gritty. And Robin is “out front.” Or as D’Amico puts it, “Robin is hands on with everything in every case. She’s great with the customers.” Why? Because she thinks of herself as a jewelry consultant rather than a jewelry saleswoman. “We’re very honest with people,” she says. “If I don’t think it helps the customer, I won’t try to sell them a piece.” Robin is also known for telling customers what not to buy. Sometimes the best jewelry for a particular style is less expensive, less flashy. “I just have this innate feeling,” Robin says half proudly and half sheepishly. Because of the split duties in the same store – Mark in the back, Robin up front – the couple says both their business and their marriage have thrived. “We’re good in different areas,” he says, adding that this extends beyond just the store. For instance, he loves golf while she loves kayaking. Robin says she stinks at golf. Mark, when asked about kayaking, simply makes a face. But there’s one thing they always do together. “We don’t take separate vacations,” Mark says firmly. “We enjoy each other’s company.” And that’s why, D’Amico muses, the Levinsons business and marriage can continue to grow for the next 30 years.

One longtime South Florida fundraiser has helped others for a lifetime, fueled by heartbreak in her own life BY RYAN CORTES
Rixys Alfonso is walking into the headquarters of Badia Spices, a local company known for its seasonings and oils. Just a few feet from the entrance of the door sits her white Cadillac CTS. License plate: RIXYS. Now in charge of marketing for the Dan Marino Foundation, Rixys partnered with owner Jose “Pepe” Badia in September to raise money for autism research and awareness. In the past, Badia has funded programs for Marino’s charity, which has raised $37 million in 20 years for autism. He’s known Rixys since meeting her at Here’s Help, a local rehabilitation center for teens addicted to drugs – where Badia paid for a kitchen and culinary school to be built. For the last three months, 5 percent of each one-liter bottle of extra virgin olive oil that Badia’s company sold has gone to Marino’s foundation. In 2011, Badia said his company brought in about $80 million. In Deceber 2012, they were at $92 million. The bottles sold for the autism campaign have reached 48 countries, according to Scott DeNight, the national sales director for the spice company. Rixys is here today with Badia to show off the facility to media members – to raise more awareness about the cause before the latest campaign ends. By the afternoon, Badia will reveal that “at least” six figures have been raised for the autism campaign. That’ll make Rixys happy. But she wants no credit for it. At Badia’s headquarters, the focus isn’t on her. She won’t let it be. “He’s one of those individuals who’s just wholeheartedly good and helps everyone,” she says about Badia. Ten minutes later: “Pepe has touched so many lives through the culinary arts.” She’ll politely interrupt Badia shortly after that, feeling that he isn’t giving himself enough credit. “We’ve never asked Pepe for support where he’s turned us down,” she says. “He’s just very generous, he wants to help.” After another story about a young man at Here’s Help, Badia and Rixys have the following exchange: Badia: “I had people here that were with me for 28 years that used to do this stuff with me. Marvin. You met him. Oh my god, his sister has the boy that you’ve helped.” Rixys: “That you have helped” Badia: “No, you. You.” Badia isn’t the only one who has spent time refocusing who exactly deserves the credit for all that have been

helped through Rixys. “She works hard, she has all these achievements,” her mother-in-law Carmen will say later. “But she has no conceit about it. Deep down, she doesn’t know how good she is.” THE SON WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO DIE IN A DAY When Rixys was 26, her son Devin was born. No one knew it until that moment, but he had Sprengel’s Deformity, a condition that made one shoulder blade sit higher than the other. He was also missing a kidney. And one of his lungs didn’t work – the other was so tiny, it was hard to spot. He had six ribs on his left side fused together and was missing eight vertebrates in his spine. Doctors said he wouldn’t live through the night. He would, but not before being doubted over and over again, with his mom’s persistence and patience remedies for any doctor’s prognosis. When he was 3, Devin was diagnosed terminally ill. “I told the doctor I wasn’t accepting that,” Rixys says. They told her about a doctor in Texas named Robert Campbell that might be able to change that. But it would cost $8,500. PR campaign and raise money. Then she did that. Her story made The Miami Herald. She stood outside local radio and TV studios waiting for the on-air personalities to walk to their cars, as she held a copy of The Herald article and told them one chilling sentence: “My son’s going to die, can you help me?” It wasn’t the first time she was in tears. Or last. A CHILD IN CUBA It all started on a Sunday in 1980. Living in Havana with mom and dad, 8-year-old Rixys was on the way to see her grandparents. Every Sunday, the family would take three different bus trips – it was cheaper that way – to spend all day with them. Her father had a craving to always know what was going on in the United States, so he’d take his transistor radio to get updates and help pass time on the ride. What crackled into his ears that day changed their lives. Two ambulance drivers drove straight into the Peruvian Embassy in Havana that day. Citizens stormed the fences, protesting the regime. Dad turned to mom: “This is our chance,” he said. “My dad was 300-percent anti-Castro,” Rixys says. She grew up listening to The Beatles and Elvis Presley, the lure of America making its way throughout the house with every tune. Before the couple got married, Dad made sure Mom was clear about what he believed: I’m going to leave this country one day. NOW WAS THE TIME. The family went home and packed its bags. A family friend drove them to the Embassy in a 1957 Buick. When they arrived, two burly men yanked down on the fence and lifted Rixys and her mom over it while her proud father pushed his way over the top. For nine days, the family was among 10,000 Cubans covered in dirt and desperation. “It was like a movie,” Rixys says. “People were killed, babies were born, and people were being greedy about space. There was a mango tree, and all the mangos were green. By the third day, there were no mangos.” Throughout the nine days, an ominous message repeatedly blared over the loudspeakers: “A moment of silence. Someone just died.” “My whole worry, the whole time I was in the embassy, wasn’t me dying. It was midterms in school,” Rixys recalls. “My dad kept telling me, ‘we’re going to the U.S., you don’t need to worry about that.’”

“My son is going to die, can you help me?” After nine days, the family’s prayers – and those of the thousands of other Cubans there – were answered. The result was the Mariel boatlift, with 125,000 Cubans fleeing to the United States before the two governments ended the agreement six months later. Rixys’s father died in 2009, and she regrets never telling him what she really felt the day her family piled onto a boat and found a new life. “When the boat pulled off Mariel, the women and children were put in a cabin. My dad came and got me and stood me up on the rail of the boat so I could see Cuba from afar. Tears were rolling out of my eyes. My dad looks up and says, ‘You don’t have to cry, we’re going to the U.S.’” “I wasn’t crying because I was scared,” she says. “I was crying because I knew I was never going to see that place again. I knew that was never coming back.” And she hasn’t. Her friend of

20 years, Nathalie Rodriguez, the morning host from 93.9 WMIA-FM in Miami, has seen the result: “She is the poster child for when you think life is going to knock you down and life isn’t fair, look at her and what she’s been through and everything is possible.” SAVING DEVIN So to Rixys, losing Devin wasn’t an option. After camping out in radio parking lots, Rixys raised $26,000 in four days for Devin. But it didn’t cover half of what she needed. The surgery in Texas was going to cost upwards of $100,000. At the time, she was a receptionist for John “Footy” Cross, a fixture in South Florida radio since the 1970s. He was floored after finding out how much she’d raised, and he asked her to be his personal assistant. Then he introduced her to congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The State of Florida had labeled the surgery as experimental instead of investigational, which meant
the patient had to cover the cost. Rixys called Wasserman Schultz and pleaded. “This was such a poignant story,” Wasserman Schultz recalls. “One that seemed so unfair, so random – and an example of how sometimes stupid government rules are an obstacle to the survival of a human being. I just saw no point in the refusal, and I wasn’t going to take no for an answer.” With Wasserman Schultz’s help, Rixys found a loophole, changing the status to investigational. Devin would have the live-saving surgery. “I know she credits me with saving Devin’s life,” Wasserman Schultz says, “but her determination, her fierce determination that there was no way Devin wasn’t going to survive, was what brought her to me, and I’m just glad I was able to be his champion.” The 15-year-old Devin credits both his mom and Wasserman Schultz for being alive. He tells other kids that he’s used to the surgeries by now. Doesn’t hurt as much. He often soothes Rixys. “I always tell her to calm down and relax,” Devin says. “I know everything’s going to be fine.” But how? “Because. I’ve been through so much and I know already.” Rixys has a second son now (3-year-old Gary) and a new husband (Alex) who met Rixys seven years ago on Match. com. “We just work really well together as a couple,” Alex says. “I’m proud of everything she does.” A few months ago, Latina Style Magazine named Rixys a “2012 Hispanic Woman of Distinction.” Two years ago, former Gov. Charlie Crist appointed her to the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council. She landed her job with Marino after impressing the former quarterback. But the accolades and awards are just window-dressing. From afar, she’s successful and powerful. Generous. A role-model. To her? A potential failure. “I’ve always been able to fix everything in life. I haven’t been able to fix Devin, and I think that’s why I question myself,” Rixys says. “Am I doing a good enough job because I can’t fix him?” She’ll ask him, frequently, “Am I a good mom?” Her son still needs surgery every time he grows, about every six months. She still doubts. There will be nights when Rixys races to the bedroom to see if her son is still alive. No, not Devin. Her healthy 3-year-old Gary. It’s what this life has done her. “I deal with it every day,” Rixys says. “I get depressed. I cry in the shower. Never cry in front of [Devin]. I always teach my son that there’s no crying in baseball. My son will always tell you, even now when he whines about something, ‘Yeah, I know, there’s no crying in baseball.’ Baseball is like life. You play hard, and you get rewards. I couldn’t teach my kid to feel sorry for himself.” It’s not the last time she’ll be in tears wondering where life is about to take her. But the tears will be wiped away. South Florida will be better for it. So will others. “She’s done what others mothers couldn’t,” Devin says. “She’s the best mother in the world.”

While many people focus on physical health and wellness in the New Year, now is a good time to think about the wellness of your finances. Currently, consumer debt is at an all-time high and many people are still paying off their credit cards from the 2011 holiday season. We all know that accumulating December debt is a bad way to end the year. In the back of our minds, we know our stress will be worse in January when we must face a stack of bills on our doorstep. Just like a diet or a new exercise plan, a financial New Year plan takes dedication and a commitment to do the work needed. No matter what your financial situation is one of the best resolutions you can make is to save more money and be more diligent with your finances. It starts by creating a budget that works with your current financial situation. Examine your month-tomonth expenses and see where you can cut back. As a rule of thumb, your total installment debt (e.g., credit cards, auto loans, student loans) shouldn’t exceed 20 percent of your annual takehome pay. One challenge that stops many people from building savings is credit card debt. It is difficult to set money aside for the future when you have debt facing you now. If you have multiple credit card debts, pay off the credit card with the highest interest rate first then move on to the next highest and so on, until you have paid everything off. While you work to pay off your credit card debt, avoid using credit as much as possible so you’re not adding to the burden you are trying to reduce. Once you’ve paid off your credit cards, you can simply take the extra money each month and put it into savings.

Jessica had a purpose for her consultation with me. “New year, same old resolution – get the weight off.” Tired of being overweight, she wanted to fix her metabolism once and for all and to be thin. “So what have you tried in the past,” I inquired. “Dr. Woliner, what haven’t I tried you mean.” Jessica continued, “I fall for whatever quick weight loss scheme that comes around [1]. You know, ’30 lbs, 30 days, $30’.” “How’d that work for you?” “Well, it wasn’t $30. Somehow they got me to sign a contract for over $2,000. And you know, I would have gladly paid that if I only got results.” “I can assure you that I will be honest and upfront with you. A patient has to have faith in her doctor.”
“That was probably my problem. I never really saw a doctor. Even at the so-called medical clinics, the doctor was only there for 3 hours a week and the girl that works up at the front desk was the one doing the consultations, dispensing me my HCG, and selling me other pills.” “The Sun-Sentinel ran an expose on HCG diet clinics showing how they offered more hype than help [2]. electrolyte imbalances. We should check for all those. “Since you’re fasting today, we can do a KORR INDIRECT CALORIMETRY test to measure your metabolism [4].” Jessica’s metabolism measured at “minus 18% less than normal” and blood tests confirmed that her thyroid had shut down (normal TSH, but other thyroid tests abnormal) [5]. “Your low magnesium can cause those muscle spasms, and even though you’re not anemic, your iron isn’t adequate to grow hair or keep your energy levels up [6].” “Is there a way I can jumpstart things?” “I won’t make the false promise of a pound a day, but you’ll see results pretty quickly. My diet suggestions will make it easier to get adequate protein in each day, causing your metabolism to recover, but until that happens; we’ll need to prescribe T3-based thyroid medication. We could also do iron injections to give your hair raw materials to grow again [7].” 3 months and 20 pounds lighter, Jessica was very upbeat. “The way I’m going, this is one New Year’s Resolution that will be easy to keep.”

s you drive down East Oakland Park Boulevard, you cannot miss this new Ft. Lauderdale hot-spot. Thasos Greek Taverna has a very different style that sets it apart from its surroundings. With the look of a uniquely lit, authentic Greek villa, this restaurant is as beautiful and inviting on the outside as it is on the inside. Owners Sophia Mylona and Kostas “GUS” Leontarakis have thought of every detail when putting this restaurant together bringing in Greek designers from Angelos Angelopoulos Associates to create a beautiful dining space that makes for a wonderful
gathering spot. From the moment you walk through the doors of Thasos Taverna, you will feel immediately at home. The staff and the surroundings give you a sense of being at a huge family gathering where you are the guest of honor. We decided to start our night out at the bar, to sample some of their specialty drinks and appetizers. Like the rest of the interior, the bar area is decorated in all white with clean lines and modern décor. Thasos did their homework when it came to designing their specialty drinks menu and brought in a mixologist from South Beach to concoct what can only be described as some of the best drinks you will ever try. Our bartender, Kelvin, not only made each one to perfection, but was also very personable and took the time to explain what each drink consisted of and the origins of all of the ingredients. Some of our favorites were the Ananithos, made of spring 44 gin, falernum, lemon, pineapple and dill, and the Greek Side Car which consists of metaxa 7 star (a Greek brandy), cointreau and lemon. Thasos also offers a large, well-selected wine
Blanch chickpeas in boiling salt water until tender but still green. Place garlic in food processor with half of the extra virgin olive oil and process. Add garbanzo beans, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper and process, alternating with water until you achieve a light, fluffy consistency. Do not over-process. Garnish with Garlic Confit recipe to follow: 10 cloves of garlic Place cloves in a small saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil then discard water and repeat this step five times adding cold water each time. After you chill the garlic, thinly slice the cloves and shallow fry in olive oil at 300 degrees until golden. Be careful not to brown. Drain oil and season garlic with salt and pepper.

list that features Greek options in addition to many others from around the world. The Greek Spreads section of the menu has many tempting options. We were drawn to all of them and therefore decided on the Piatelaa selection of various spreads including Whipped Feta, Eggplant, Taramosalata, Tzatziki and Green Chick Peas- all served with delicious, toasted bread. As we tasted our way through all of them, each spread was more flavorful and delicious than the last. For the shared plates, we tried the Shrimp Saganaki, the Grilled Octopus and the Keftedes. The Shrimp Saganki was perfectly flamebroiled with roasted tomato and a scrumptious feta cheese. The FireGrilled Octopus was remarkable and is an ideal choice for adventurous palates. The Keftedes (grilled lamb meatballs) were served with a delicious whipped yogurt. The wonderful combination of flavors and textures satisfied our taste buds completely, so much so that we had to order more. For dinner, we chose to sit outside on their beautiful, enclosed patio. This semi-outdoor space was a perfect setting for a wonderful meal

on a beautiful night. Their menu features classic Greek entrees with influences from both the Thasos region of Greece and the owners’ own family styles and recipes. Using only the finest and freshest ingredients, these dishes come to life as a wonderful combination of Greek spirit with a modern twist. We highly recommend their perfectly grilled Lamb Chops that practically melt in your mouth and are served with crunchy fingerling potatoes or, their Day Boat Swordfish- grilled and served with caramelized root vegetables and capers. Another one of our favorites is the Moussaka (lamb & eggplant casserole)perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. The Brussel Sprouts, yes brussel sprouts, were a fabulous side dish. Prepared with house-cured pork belly, Thasos honey, and lemonif ever there was a time to eat your brussel sprouts, this is it. We finished off the evening with some of their freshly prepared desserts and fantastic Illy Coffee. The flourless chocolate torte is dense, decadent and rich. Thasos makes an amazing Greek Yogurt with fresh berry sauce that is creamy, tart and refreshing. The standout dessert of the night though, was their

Christmas on Las Olas Over 40,000 people came out to enjoy the 50th anniversary of Christmas on Las Olas on November 27th, 2012.
