FEBRUARY ESTERO COMMUNITY PARK 10AM-2PM

DAY OF SMILES

A Day of Smiles for 200 Estero Kids BY LAURA CUMMINGS

FEBRUARY 11 WILL BE A DAY OF SMILES FOR ABOUT TWO HUNDRED CHILDREN IN THE ESTERO AREA WHO ARE UNACCUSTOMED TO SEEING A DENTIST. Not only will they have their teeth cleaned, they are sure to be smiling as puppets and costumed characters educate and entertain them throughout the day. Eighteen local dentists and hygienists have volunteered their time as part of the first “Day of Smiles” at Estero Community Park. The event is a joint effort of Children Without and the Rotary Club of Estero. The Bonita Community Health Center, The Salvation Army, the Florida Dental Association and the Lee County Dental Society also are providing support to make sure children leave with sparkling smiles and better brushing habits. Families identified by The Salvation Army and Pinewoods Elementary have been invited to attend this inaugural dental fair. “I just think the kids need dentistry so badly,” observed Katy Errington, founder of Children Without and the event’s coordinator. When she asked local officers of The Salvation Army, they wholeheartedly agreed. When families are uninsured, dental visits often are seen as nonessential, only taking place if a tooth has decayed to the point of needing to be pulled, Errington noted. Uninsured parents also will

12

FEBRUARY 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

be given the opportunity to have their teeth examined. Errington founded Children Without sixteen years ago in honor of her son, U.S. Air Force Sgt. Philip Kesler, who was killed during a training mission in 1992. The organization’s mission is to improve the dignity and quality of life for youth around the world. Children Without does most of its work helping poverty-stricken children in Mexico. Lately, however, Errington has been thinking more about struggling families right here in Estero. “This event is very important for kids in this area because many families lack dental insurance, and with an unfriendly economy, a number of local children have never had the opportunity to visit a dentist,” she said. “I read where Collier County has 17,000 children without dental care. I can’t find the stats for Lee County; however, I believe it would be the same, if not higher.” A hand puppet show will teach children proper brushing techniques, while roving animal characters and one giant tooth will be walking around throughout the event. Estero High School students

will be helping with face painting, puppets, nail painting and games. A local beautician has volunteered to give free haircuts, Errington added. Families also will have the opportunity to attend a workshop on nutrition, focusing on foods which are good for the teeth and overall health. After visiting one of the volunteer dentists, children will receive a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, a hand puppet, a school shirt and a healthy lunch. “The event is in celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month,” Errington noted. “To my knowledge, this is the first time an event like this one has been held in Estero.” Several of the dentists have volunteered to provide free follow-up care for those who need treatment. The best part about being involved in A Day of Smiles is knowing many children will have the opportunity to have their teeth and mouth checked,” Errington said. “We hope through financial donations to make needed treatment available to those who attend.” To help bring smiles to local children in need, contact Errington at katye04@gmail.com.

Shoes That Fit, Helping Bonita’s Kids Since 1995 SHOES THAT FIT IS A NATIONAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT BEGAN IN 1992 HELPING CHILDREN IN ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN POMONA, CALIFORNIA. TODAY, NEW SHOES AND CLOTHES ARE PROVIDED TO OVER 1,900 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN 40 STATES AND ALMOST ONE MILLION NEW PAIRS OF SHOES HAVE BEEN DELIVERED DIRECTLY TO SCHOOL CHILDREN IN NEED. In 2004 The Bonita Springs Chapter of Shoes That Fit was established by Pat & Tom Leggett. Newly retired and wanting to get involved in their community they discovered a need within the local school system. Many of the children were attending school wearing ill-fitting clothes and shoes. Upon further investigation they found that up to 70% of the students were receiving free or reduced priced lunches. (That figure is up to over 90% today). That first year, Pat and Tom, with the help of friends and neighbors in Shadow Wood Country Club, provided about 100 children in two local elementary schools with new shoes and outfits. Since then, the Bonita Springs Chapter of Shoes That Fit has supplied over 3,500 pairs of shoes and 45,000 articles of clothing to eight elementary local schools and one middle school. The local chapter has the honor of receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award for its efforts. Throughout the year, school personnel identify the children in need and provide the chapter with a list of appropriate shoes and clothing sizes. Volunteers from communities in Lee County are then contacted and they

14

FEBRUARY 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

either purchase the items and or make a monetary donation to the cause. Volunteers make the purchases and drop them off at the Leggett’s house. The items are transferred to brown paper bags provided by Publix and delivered to the schools where they are distributed to the students. The organization’s biggest effort is a “Back to School” event which is held in late July. Last year over 450 students were given new shoes, socks, underwear, pants, shorts and three shirts just in time to return to school in August. Since this event is held during the summer there are fewer volunteers in the area to help. This is where their major fundraiser comes into play. The upcoming 7th Annual Bonita Springs Chapter of Shoes That Fit Luncheon and Fashion Show will be held at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort in Estero on February 27, 2012. Shoes That Fit depends on this fundraiser and financial donations to operate. With no local administrative costs, all proceeds go directly to purchasing items for the children in the program. It’s “All About The Kids” themed luncheon is chaired by Shadow

Wood resident Shelby Rose. Shelby has been an avid supporter of Shoes That Fit and luncheon committee member for a number of years. Her charisma and lively personality and that of her committee chairs will bring excitement and energy to the event. “We have stunning fashions presented by Kay’s On The Beach and hundreds of fabulous raffle and silent auction prizes” explained Shelby. “Our guests have a choice of three delicious entrees along with a lovely salad and dessert.” Please join Shoes that Fit in their efforts to help the children in our community. When: February 27, 2012 Where: Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort, Estero Time: 11: 00 am Cost: $75 payable to the Leggett Shoe Foundation For reservations contact: Sally Lipsey at 239-949-7250 For more information about Shoes That Fit contact Pat Leggett at lanalegg@gmail.com or visit www. leggettshoefoundation.com and www.shoesthatfit.org.

M ARCH THE VINEYARDS AT LAMB OF GOD CHURCH 239-267-3510

Interfaith Caregivers of South Lee BY LAURA CUMMINGS

IT ALL STARTED WITH FIVE CHURCHES IN ESTERO AND SAN CARLOS PARK AND THEIR VISION TO FEED THE HUNGRY IN THEIR COMMUNITY. What began in 1991 as a grassroots initiative has since bloomed into a whole-community effort to help neighbors in need. Interfaith Caregivers of South Lee (ICSL) now feeds more than 600 households a month, said executive director Nancy Martin. In addition to the food pantry, ICSL, a United Way Partner House, provides food stamp registration, meals on wheels delivery, health screenings, literacy classes, income tax preparation and help with mortgage or utility bills. “It’s a very, very active and busy facility, and that’s how we like it to be,” said board member Carol Tindall. “We want it to be a community house which provides services to our neighbors.” All of those activities take an enormous amount of volunteer hours and a generous heaping of community support. Publix, Target, Sweetbay, Costco, Panera Bread and Pizza Hut provide bread and bakery donations multiple times a week. Several area churches collect nonperishable food items year-round, and many neighborhoods also conduct food

drives. In May, the Post Office has its annual letter carrier food drive, which results in the biggest food donation of the year. The organization’s largest fundraiser for the year is its annual Dinner Benefit, planned for March 3 at The Vineyards at Lamb of God Church in Estero. Tickets are $25 and are available at the ICSL office or by calling (239) 267-3510. The evening includes a gourmet buffet dinner, as well as a silent auction and prize drawings. Local businesses have been generous with donations, said Board President Bob Pinnel. NBC-2 news anchor Len Jennings will auction off desserts. One year, a plate of brownies made by the ICSL-sponsored Girl Scout troop fetched $200. “The money stays in the community and provides for all the neighbors in need,” Tindall said. “To take a bite out of hunger and to be with our friends and neighbors -- that’s our purpose.” The demand for food and other services has increased dramatically since the recession hit, Martin said. ICSL assisted 2,499 children

and 1,269 adults in 2010. Through November of 2011, 3,727 individuals had received assistance. With an annual budget of just $180,000, ICSL relies on the help of volunteers. “We have over 200 volunteers,” Pinnel said. “It would not be possible to operate without them.” About 20 volunteers are needed each day to pick up food from grocery stores, man computers, deliver meals and stock the pantry. Volunteer Rafaela Lopez, who Pinnel calls “volunteer of the century,” logged more than 1,200 hours last year. “She really has taken it on as a full-time job,” Pinnel said. Lopez started like many other volunteers, as a client. Since 50 percent of ICSL’s clientele is Hispanic, Lopez found she could help as an interpreter. “I enjoy what I am doing,” Lopez said. “It’s really a blessing. You meet new people every day.” ICSL is also collecting old electronic gadgets and cords to be recycled in its Second Chance program. For more information, visit icslee.org.

SUSAN G 2012 Susan G. Komen Race for theKOMEN Cure Celebrates Survivors BY LAURA GATES

ON MARCH 10, COCONUT POINT MALL WILL AGAIN BE AWASH IN A SEA OF PINK FOR THE 2012 SUSAN G. KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE. THE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA EVENT HAS BECOME NOT ONLY THE AREA’S LARGEST FUNDRAISER IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER, BUT A CELEBRATION OF SURVIVORS, FRIENDSHIP, AND THE COMMITMENT OF A COMMUNITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. With more than 12,000 participants and supporters in 2011 and more than $1 million raised, the event has grown exponentially in its first five years in Southwest Florida. The real story, though, isn’t found in numbers, but in the lives of breast cancer patients and survivors touched by grants made from Race for the Cure proceeds. In 2011, $1,015,235 was granted to 13 non-profit organizations in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry, and Glades counties. The grants meet a wide range of needs including education and support, diagnostic screening, treatment, and access to care for the uninsured and

“IT ENCOURAGES BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS KNOWING THAT SO MUCH IS BEING DONE TO FIND A CURE AND TO HELP OTHERS IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS. ” 18

underinsured. “Few things are more stressful than a cancer diagnosis,” said Miriam Ross, executive director of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Southwest Florida. “There is an emotional toll, a medical and physical toll, and in many cases, a financial toll, especially in the current economy. This is where Race for the Cure comes into play.” Seventy five percent of funds raised stay in the local community and 25 percent funds national research programs. Since 2002, that amounts to $4.7 million given in grants locally, thousands of breast cancer survivors who received support, and thousands more who’ve been educated or received life-saving screenings. “Our community understands these needs and works to fund grants that relieve some of the burden,”

added Ross. “It encourages breast cancer survivors knowing that so much is being done to find a cure and to help others in similar situations. On Race day, we recognize those who have fought hard and lost their battle as well as the warriors who have overcome the disease and are here to give hope to others. It is an awe-inspiring experience.” Race for the Cure is a sanctioned, chip timed 5K race that includes a non-competitive 5K run/walk and one-mile fun run/walk. Participants can form teams to fundraise and support a breast cancer survivor. Race for the Cure starts at 8 a.m. and winds through Coconut Point Mall property. Race awards and a survivor recognition celebration follow the Race. Individuals and teams can register for Race for the Cure at www.komenswfl.org or call (239) 498-0016.

Celebrate CELEBRATE

ESTERO ESTERO BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS

“AS MUCH work as it is TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER, it is such a fun event”

32

FEBRUARY 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

It’s February, which means it’s time for the Estero community to gather in celebration. The tenth annual Celebrate Estero event will be held at Miromar Outlets on February 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will commemorate all the things which make our community a great place to live, work and play. The event was started by the late Meg Judge, founder of the Estero Chamber of Commerce, as a way to showcase everything Estero has to offer. She planned the event to be near Valentine’s Day as a way of displaying affection for our community. “Members get exposure, those in the community get good information, and hopefully we all have fun along the way,” explained board member Shelley Starner-Pritt, who has long handled logistics for Celebrate Estero as assistant manager of Miromar Outlets. Judge referred to Estero as the “retail capital of Southwest Florida,” as the community offers three major shopping malls. Since the Estero area also includes an international airport, a state university, a major sporting and entertainment arena and proximity to the ocean, it just may be the ideal place to live. “ There is a lot to celebrate about Estero, and the more people we can

bring into the community, the better for our businesses,” said Susan Lindenmuth, the Chamber’s newest board member. In Judge’s absence, several board members have stepped up to make the Chamber’s largest event a success, Pritt said. Chamber Vice President Debi Montenieri is managing vendors and sponsors while Capt. Morgan Bowden of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to bring in an auto show, as well as bounce houses for the kids. As public relations manager for Estero Fire Rescue, Lindenmuth has long been involved in the event’s main attraction, the annual firefighters’ chili cook-off. Teams decorate their booths with a theme and serve up their best chili recipes. This year, the competition will be even hotter. It has been expanded to include barbecued ribs. Lindenmuth is aiming to stiffen the competition by opening the cook-off to civic organizations, along with the firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel. “We’re going to be just pigging out,” she said. County commissioners and other familiar faces will serve as celebrity judges, while all festival goers will have the opportunity

to vote for their favorite chili and rib recipes as part of the People’s Choice Award. Forty to fifty vendors will be stationed on the north side of the mall by the pond, with chili and rib booths sprinkled throughout. Visitors also may take in a water ski show by Southern Extreme. Children will enjoy a kids activity area and the opportunity to check out Estero firetrucks. A deejay will be spinning tunes throughout the day, and Pritt is hoping to arrange for radio broadcasts from the event. Live music will be provided by local talent, including the Estero High School Jazz Band. Lindenmuth may even don her kilt as part of the Guns and Hoses pipe and drum band. “As much work as it is to put it all together, it is such a fun event,” Lindenmuth said. “Number one, there is great food. Number two, it’s an opportunity for people from the surrounding communities to come out. We’ve always had beautiful weather, and it’s a great location. It’s such a nice day.”

TARPEN COVER STORY LAST SPRING, THEY INITIATED THE U LTIMATE L INDOOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE G (UIFL). THIS SPRING, ANDREW HAINES AND MICHAEL T TAY A LOR ARE TEAMING UP TO BRING INDOOR FOOTBALL BAC K TO GERMAIN ARENA. The Florida Tarp pons will open their inaugural seaason March 9, providing family entertainment through the fast-paced game of arena football. “You’re on top of tthe action,” said Taylor, who will serrve as Tarpons’ head coach in additiion to co-owner of the team. “These gu uys get knocked over the wall all thee time. If you’re in the first row, therre’s a good shot you’re going to have players in your

When the ball sails into the stands, fans race to catch the prize. After the game, they storm the field for player autographs. Children especially appreciate the opportunity to see pro athletes up close. “It’s all about the family environment,” said Taylor, who has three children, ages six, eight and thirteen. He knows if the kids are having a good time, parents are likely to bring

lap at some time during the game.” Part of the allure o of arena football is the amped up ffan interaction. Players are encouragged to show off a bit, especially afterr a touchdown. “I want the guys to o jump up on the wall and get the cro owd going,” said Haines, who has ow wned dozens of sports teams and han ndles marketing for the team. Because the field d is about half the size of a staandard football field, arena footballl is a primarily offensive game. “It’s hard hitting, and d the ball is in the air a lot,” Haines said.. “We go through about fifty footballs in n a game.”

the entire family back. Treating the family to a Tarpons game is less expensive than a night at the movies, he added. Arena football is so entertaining, it attracts fans from every demographic, Haines noted. He’s seen elderly women buy a single season ticket. “We’ve had ladies who can’t stand the outdoor game because of the weather and the slow pace,” he said. “I’ve never had anyone tell me they didn’t have a good time here. My goal is not for them to remember the score, just that they had a good time.” LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | FEBRUARY 2012

In addition, he owns a sports management company, a marketing firm, a power washing company, an online portal for governmental agencies and an online portal for buying and selling businesses called Biz Sellers. With business savvy aplenty, Haines and Taylor have amassed a volunteer marketing team including several Estero business leaders. The grassroots approach is successfully creating a local buzz for the new indoor football team. It’s not the first time football has been featured at Germain Arena. The arena was formerly home to the Florida Firecats, which played in the AF2 arena football league from 2001 to 2009. “We’re looking forward to having arena football back at Germain Arena,” noted Craig Brush, the arena’s president and general manager. The season opener is sandwiched between a March lineup of events including Disney Live! and the Harlem Globetrotters. Nonetheless, Haines and Taylor are expecting a strong showing for the season opener against the Carolina Aviators. The Tarpons held a series of open tryouts last fall and have finalized a roster of 32 players. Former Firecats quarterback Chris Wallace will lead the Tarpons during their inaugural season. Wallace was a key acquisition as a veteran of arena football, Taylor noted. “Quarterback is the one position which is vital to be successful,” he said. “In our game, it’s more about

TARPEN COVER STORY Crowd contests and interactions with players and the dance team make arena football a blend between athletic competition and entertainment, Haines added. He plans for Tarpons players and Reel Girls to be visible in the community, with many opportunities for fans to interact outside of game days. The season is short, with fourteen games and just seven at home. The Tarpons season opens Friday, March 9, with a home game against the Carolina Aviators. Regular season play runs through mid-June. “It’s a limited time opportunity,” Haines noted. Haines and Taylor started the UIFL with six teams in its inaugural season for the spring of 2011. They started and sold each team, keeping ownership of the Canton Cougars in Canton, Ohio, where Haines lived. “Last year, the league was very successful,” Haines noted. “We had teams profitable in the first year.” This season, ten more teams have joined the league, making the UIFL tied as the largest indoor football league in the nation. Sixteen teams will competing in the 2012 season, thanks to the business sense of Haines, who handles the front office, and Taylor, who handles football operations. The two have been teaming up for years, owning and selling several other sports teams. Taylor is a former quarterback and baseball player for the University of Tennessee at Martin with a degree in sports coaching. He coached at small colleges and worked

as a talent scout before getting involved in arena football. Taylor has been part of an ownership group which operated four indoor football franchises in three different leagues. His 2005 Richmond Bandits were crowned the AIFL champions in their inaugural season. “We need a coach who understands the business,” Haines noted. “This isn’t the NFL.” Taylor had been helping train coaches for the new UIFL teams but told Haines he wanted to stay in Florida, where he runs the Tour Program Golf School, located at the World Woods Golf Club near Tampa. “I told him, when we get a team in Florida, I’ll coach it,” Taylor recalled. The duo soon targeted Germain Arena as an ideal home for their new team. Taylor relocated to Estero with his wife, Anna, and their three children, while Haines moved from Ohio with his wife, Leah, and their two children. “Coming down from Ohio in January, it looked like paradise to me,” Haines noted. A lifelong entrepreneur, Haines entered corporate America straight out of high school, starting his first business at age nineteen. He has since started and sold more than three dozen businesses, helping to create more than 700 jobs in numerous communities throughout the United States. Along with arena football, Haines has operated minor league sports teams in basketball and hockey. He also has a minority interest in an arena racing series.

anticipation. Everything happens quickly. Chris Wallace brings experience and holds several AF2 passing records.” Taylor and Haines are anticipating a successful inaugural season for the Tarpons. “The challenge is the speed of the game,” Taylor said. “You’ve got to get the ball out quick.” “It’s not just football,” Haines added. “It’s exciting; it’s an event.”

South Floridians are Among Those Eyeing

GOLD GOLD as a Hedge Investment BY JIM FREER

AMID ECONOMIC PROBLEMS IN EUROPE, ONGOING TURMOIL IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND CONTINUED UNCERTAINTIES ABOUT THE U.S. ECONOMY, 2012 HAS BEGUN AS ANOTHER YEAR WHEN MANY INVESTORS ARE WONDERING “WHAT ABOUT GOLD?” They are considering getting into gold or expanding their gold investments because 2011 was the 11th consecutive year in which prices rose for that precious metal. The price of gold for immediate delivery on the London market rose 7.5 percent in 2011, ending the year at $1,524.80 an ounce. That took place during a year when the Standard & Poor’s 500 declined 0.6 percent. But it is important to know that gold’s 2011 year-end price was down about 20 percent from early September’s record highs in the $1,900 range. Gold moves in the opposite direction of the U.S. dollar, and that currency began appreciating in value last fall when many institutional investors turned to it because of concerns about the financial strength of European governments and financial systems. So, even if the past decade’s bull market for gold continues it can be expected that there will be price swings during any year. The price of gold was in the $270 range during much of 2000 and 2001 before it began a long-term rise following the September 11 attacks and the ensuing crisis in Iraq. “I expect gold will continue its long-term rise even with some corrections like we saw late in 2011,” says James DiGeorgia, founder and president of Gold and Energy Advisor in Boca Raton. DiGeorgia’s company publishes a newsletter on the markets for gold, other precious metals

BUSINESS&money and oil—with a focus on how international and U.S. economic events impact those markets. He expects that Europe’s banking and financial problems will remain a major issue in 2012, and cites that as a main reason for his forecast that the price of gold will be above $2,100 an ounce by the end of this year. “I recommend that everyone should have a portion of their investments in gold,” he says. “It is a hedge that everyone needs. For many, it can be up to 15 percent (of investible assets).” Taking a longterm view, many financial advisors in South Florida and around the country emphasize that gold should be viewed foremost as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainties. Thus, having a portion of assets in gold can be a prudent strategy for many investors no matter the overall world financial environment. The percentage of investable assets to have in gold varies among investors based on factors that include their ability and willingness to tolerate price swings and its high degree of downside risk compared with some other investments. Scot Hunter, CEO of Emerald Asset Advisors. LLC in Weston, notes that gold prices have historically experienced extremely long bull and bear periods. After peaking in 1980, gold drifted downward for nearly 20 years before reversing course. Emerald Asset Advisors, a Registered Investment Advisor, says on its Web site that it provides fee-based, discretionary asset management to its private and institutional clients. “Regardless of whether gold prices head higher or lower in the near term, we believe gold is a unique asset that deserves a spot in any diversified portfolio,” Hunter says. He adds that gold can help stabilize portfolio returns during periods of extreme market volatility and may serve several

might consider mutual funds, direct investment in gold mining stocks or purchase of gold bullion. His preferred investment is gold coins produced by the mints of the United States and other governments. A buyer can take possession, and the coins are liquid. DiGeorgia’s company includes a coin dealership. To avoid mark-ups or problems such as a dealer not delivering the coins, he suggests that buyers contact local offices of the Better Business Bureau before buying gold coins from a dealer. The U.S. Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf and Chinese Panda are among coins that he recommends for investment. Gold jewelry should be purchased “for the love of it” and not as an investment, DiGeorgia says, because mark-ups for purchase often are high and because its market is not as liquid as other types of gold. DiGeorgia advises investors to check with their financial advisors to determine how much of their assets they should invest in gold. He recommends a maximum of 15 percent, unless you anticipate the onset of a worldwide recession or similar economic catastrophe. If gold prices become out of reach for some investors or hit levels that some consider overpriced, he says investors might consider silver which is sometimes called “the poor man’s metal,” In early January, silver was trading in the range of $29 an ounce.

GOLD other purposes, including: s ! HEDGE AGAINST A WEAK DOLLAR s )Nm ATION 0ROTECTION s ! POTENTIAL SAFE HAVEN DURING times of crisis s 0ROTECTION DURING DEm ATIONARY periods s ,OW CORRELATION TO OTHER ASSET classes Hunter notes that due to its unique characteristics, gold’s performance has historically shown a low degree of correlation to other major asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, or even other commodities. This can help smooth out portfolio returns over time, he adds. On its Web site, Emerald Asset Advisors says it invests in gold through Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and mutual funds that invest in gold mining stocks. DiGeorgia says some investors

Just Bee-lieve The “Just Bee-lieve” Brunch was held at the Shadow Wood Country Club Dec. 12, in honor of St. Lucy’s Feast Day and Judy Kahl’s birthday. St. Lucy is the patron saint of eyesight, and Kahl suffers from Usher Syndrome, a degenerative disease which robs both hearing and eyesight. Father Marcin Koziola spoke at the brunch, which raised money for the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

AND

another thing... ADVENTURES IN TIME MANAGEMENT BY BRUCE TURKEL

My to-do list is about as long as my arm – people to call, people to call back, clients’ jobs to work on, appointments to schedule, article deadlines to meet, blog posts to write, tweets to post, emails to return, and books to read. Hey, I’m reading just as fast as I can but my night table is still sagging under the growing pile of books to get through. And that doesn’t count all the unread titles hiding in my iPad just waiting to ďŹ ll any spare moments I might have when I’m away from a hardcover. To paraphrase the old vaudeville line, I wanted to write a New Year’s resolution about productivity and time management but I never found the time to do it. I’ll bet your life and your list is just as jam-packed. Thanks to my computerized to-do list program, most everything I need to accomplish is neatly cataloged and regularly updated right on my screen. Because the list automatically syncs with my iPhone, my obligations are always in my pocket, silently screaming out how much there is to be done. And with Apple’s new Siri voice activation program connected to the Bluetooth system in my car, I can even have my list read to me while I drive, constantly reminding me of exactly what I’m not doing. So with so much to do, and everything so well organized, why is it that I’m never quite sure of what I should be doing next? Especially when my favorite business and personal development books tell me EXACTLY what to do: s *IM #OLLINS WAS ADAMANT THAT TO GO FROM 'OOD 4O 'REAT ) NEED TO GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE OFF THE BUS THE right people on the bus, and to make sure they’re all in the right seats. According to Collins, I should stop writing this post and go work on my HR plans. s %LIYAHU 'OLDRATT MADE IT REAL CLEAR IN 4HE 'OAL THAT the number one thing a manager should do is avoid being a bottleneck. So that means I should put down my personnel ďŹ les and go approve those pending ads to keep my agency humming along.

s )N 4HE % -YTH 2EVISITED -ICHAEL 'ERBER SAYS that the thing to do is “work on your business, not in your business.â€? So the heck with reviewing client work, I should be out in the world networking and ďŹ nding new clients to work on. s )N "EING $IGITAL .ICHOLAS .EGROPONTE PREACHES that “content is king.â€? Maybe I should stop prospecting and start creating more content – like this article that I had stopped crafting in the ďŹ rst place in order to work on my personnel issues. s !ND IN 9OUNGER .EXT 9EAR #HRIS Crowley and Harry Lodge say that if I don’t work out intensely at least six days a week I’m not going to be in any shape to manage my business anyway so maybe I ought to turn my computer off and go for a run. In a New York Times article titled 4HE *OY OF 1UIET author Pico Iyer wrote that, â€œâ€Ś The information revolution came without an instruction manual. All the data in the world cannot teach us how to sift through data; images don’t show us how to process images. The only way to do justice to our onscreen lives‌â€? (At least eight and a half hours a day according to Nicholas Carr in his book The Shallows) â€œâ€Śis by summoning exactly the emotional and moral clarity that can’t be found on any screen.â€? Iyer is so intent on slowing down and disconnecting that he’s never Tweeted, gone on Facebook or even used a cellphone. He even moved from Manhattan to rural *APAN TO hSURVIVE FOR LONG STRETCHES ENTIRELY ON FOOT v Not only do I ďŹ nd that a bit severe, I ďŹ nd it stressful just trying to ďŹ gure out how he found the time to plan the move in the ďŹ rst place. Maybe I should stop reading so much. Not only will keeping my nose out of books, magazines, and newspapers give me more time to get my work done but imagine how much shorter my to do list will be without all those recommended titles cluttering it up.

raveling from Indiana to Southwest Florida, Harlo Conklin complained of chest pain. He and his wife attributed it to fast food and long hours in the car. A stop at a Gainesville hospital showed his vitals were good and he felt better. Though physicians thought Harlo should stay overnight, he and Frances returned to the road. Twenty-four hours later, Harlo went into cardiac arrest. His daughter performed CPR, paramedics used a defibrillator to restore his heartbeat and a special treatment that induces hypothermia to save Harlo’s life.
