SUPER BOWL – VALENTINE’S DAY - ELECTIONS February marks the pinnacle of activity for the football season as millions prepare to watch the Lombardy Trophy awarded to this year’s top NFL Team. To the dismay of many, Tim Tebow will not be the one to hoist sports most coveted prize, although he did convert many naysayers with some miraculous endings while leading his team to the playoffs. Admittedly, I was rooting for him. Well, now we have the Panthers and Heat to fill the void for sports excitement. Right after football comes flowers, fine dining and romance as the 14th of this month is Valentine’s Day. It is interesting to note this occasion originated in medieval times when a catholic priest would marry young men against the Roman emperor’s decree. It seemed the ruler believed unmarried men made for better
Other issues turning up the heat, which may have more impact on our daily lives, are determining our representatives in the re-districting of the US House, State House and State Senate for Florida. Hold on, this rollercoaster appears really turn up the heat and to go and on, then possibly off to the courts. On a personal note, I want to congratulate Rita & Rick Case on the 50th Anniversary celebration which they completely underwrote last month at the Signature Grand, hosted by Arlene Pecora. The event attracted more than twelve hundred attendees and raised more than one million dollars for twenty one local charities. The occasion truly reflected the genuine devotion the Case’s have for their South Florida home and the Beach Boys and

The priest’s name was Valentine and he befriended the deaf and blind daughter of one of his jailors. Legend has it he restored her sight and hearing before being beheaded. Well gentlemen, if you don’t want to suffer the same fate, you better make your dinner reservations early. Now as winter brings some cooler weather the political process is heating up nationally and locally. It looks like the Republicans Party may be preparing to make Mitt Romney its Presidential nominee. The only question becomes, who will be the selection for Vice President? Some initials being floated are SP, RS, NG, or maybe J-E-B?

Young Friends of ‘Heart’ Have PULSE on Local Philanthropy WHAT STARTED AS A SMALL GROUP OF BROWARD COUNTY’S MOST UP AND COMING CIVIC, COMMUNITY AND CORPORATE LEADERS HAS QUICKLY EVOLVED INTO AN ENTIRELY NEW DIVISION OF WIDESPREAD SUPPORT FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION – ALL WITHIN JUST A YEARLONG TIMESPAN . Known as PULSE, the group formed as the driving force aimed at getting young professionals aligned with the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association. Following the success of the 2011 inaugural PULSE event, the organization is pleased to announce the second annual event, titled the “Red Party”, which will take place on Thursday, March 1 at the Westin Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. Last year, the gathering drew more than 500 guests who mixed and mingled amidst sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and live entertainment. PULSE 2012 Chairmen are Romina Sifuentes, Sara Shake and Jamie Shock. “I know I speak for all the cochairs of PULSE in saying that our committee has pulled together to achieve goals that we thought were totally out of reach, not only from a fundraising perspective, but also in the generosity of their time, commitment to the cause, and exceptional, individual talents that each member brings to the group,”
20

said Shake. “With a team like ours, the possibilities are endless, and we are so excited and proud to give back to the American Heart Association this year.” One Beat CPR, a dedicated team of professionals who deliver reallife experiences to the classroom to ensure learning CPR is “fun” and “easy”, is the Signature Sponsor. Andre Johnson, Houston Texans Wide Receiver, whom will be in attendance at the event, is the Celebrity Sponsor and the Kickoff Sponsor is Silverlining Inflight Catering/Jet Runway Café. Proceeds go directly to the American Heart Association in its nationwide effort to combat heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 4 killers, respectively, of American men and women. Fittingly, the event falls on the heels of February, “American Heart Month”, when education and awareness outreach is at an all-time high. While largely perceived as a “man’s disease”, heart disease is also the No. 1 killer of women. In
fact, cardiovascular diseases claim more female lives than the next four causes of death combined. PULSE also emphasizes the importance of children’s heart health and focuses a large part of its campaign on education regarding the childhood obesity epidemic facing America and what parents can do to ensure their children live longer, stronger lives. Supporters also lead the way in raising funds for the Open Your Heart component of the Broward Heart Ball, which will be held on Saturday, May 5, also at the Westin Beach Resort & Spa. The Broward Heart Ball is a prestigious, black-tie social event which will be chaired for the second consecutive year by Steven Mariano, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Patriot National Insurance Group. Mariano’s company is also the Signature Sponsor of the Broward Heart Ball. For further information about the PULSE event and the Broward Heart Ball, call 954-492-6908 or visit www. heart.org/browardheartball.

Kids in Distress are well-known for going above and beyond in order to keep families together during hard economic times. Examples of their good work abound in South Florida. Natalie also attended parenting classes in order to learn how to better manage the children and help them with their schoolwork and social relationships. In two months’ time, the plan devised by Kids in Distress was starting to show results. The school reported that the children’s grades improved and each had a growing number of friends. Today’s economy is making it difficult for more and more families to survive day to day. Unskilled workers with few resources need help to keep their heads above water

safe-cycling advocacy, community activism to improve bike awareness, and to support community-driven charitable ride events. CSP members along with Z-Motion are supporters of the Tour De Cure event. Cycling is an excellent exercise for cardiovascular fitness and weight management and there are many Tour De Cure participants with type II diabetes who have been able to get off medication by cycling regularly. Over the past 3 years CSP has been instrumental in raising funds & recruiting riders, volunteers and sponsors to the Tour de Cure. CSP’s involvement has grown over the years with Dr. Eidelman serving as Chair; CSP member Eric Koslow has been a top fundraiser; and Jeff Kahn has been instrumental in developing routes that navigate hundreds of
cyclists safely through the streets of Broward County. The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Whether you ride 10 miles, 35 miles, 62 miles or 100 miles, you will travel a safe route supported from start to finish with rest stops, food to fuel the journey and fans to cheer you on! To find out more about the American Diabetes Association Tour De Cure, please contact Dawn Seay at 954.772.8040 ext. 3053 or visit main. diabetes.org/sfltour. No matter your cycling skill level you’ll enjoy a fun day on your bike for a great cause. Other event sponsors are JM Family Enterprises, Memorial Healthcare System, Baptist Health South Florida, Geo Foundation, American Express, and First Capital.

A Little Altitude Was Experienced Here In South Florida BY RANDI PRESS
MARK AND ROBIN LEVINSON OF LEVINSON JEWELERS HOSTED A PRIVATE, INTIMATE GATHERING AT THEIR HOME TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR THE 7908 ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL. Imagine the most beautiful night in South Florida. It’s 60 degrees and the evening sky is full of stars. You have just finished a wonderful dining experience and now are being treated to the soulful sounds of John Oates. John is an American rock, R&B and soul guitarist, musician, songwriter and producer best known as half of the rock and soul duo Hall & Oates. John Oates is the mastermind and host of the 7908 Aspen Songwriters Festival whose mission is to bring together songwriters new and legendary to create the next generation of great American music in an atmosphere of collaboration and

community. John’s goal to create the shortest distance between the songwriter’s voice and the listener’s ear allows audiences to experience music in a whole new way. Legendary writers perform side by side with the next great generation of songwriting talent. This allows participants to be on the cutting edge of new music. “The evening and performance by John Oates was spectacular, and raised funds for a wonderful initiative,” said Mark Levinson, coowner of Levinson Jewelers. “John is not only a great talent, but also a great friend and supporter of the arts.” “We have a love of music and wanted to be part of making an impact in something really special” said Scot Hunter of Emerald Asset Advisors, a host of the evening. “This evening is a small representation of what you may hear at the 7908 Songwriters Festival.” Creating a bond between the artists who write the songs and the fans who want to hear them in
their purest, most real form is what John Oates shares as he explains his passion. This passion drew both Gerry and Ellen Greenspoon of Greenspoon Marder and Doug and Lynda Weiser of Cloud 9 Film Partners to participate in hosting the local event. “We feel strongly about helping aspiring musicians” said Gerry Greenspoon. “This is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and money for this outstanding festival while experiencing your favorite songwriters up close and personal.” More than 70 guests were present to experience a small taste of the 7908 Aspen Songwriters Festival here in South Florida and a live auction was hosted by South Florida’s local radio personality John “Footy” Kross helping the event raise more than $100,000. Dates for the next 7908 Aspen Songwriters Festival are set for March 21-25, 2012. American Cancer Society Helps with Amazing Programs BY ROSS SABATH
THOSE DREADED WORDS, “YOU HAVE CANCER.” HEARING THOSE WORDS FOR THE FIRST TIME CHANGES YOUR LIFE. DEALING WITH WHAT COMES AFTER THAT CAN BE OVERWHELMING. THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CAN HELP WITH SOME AMAZING PROGRAMS. AND, THEY’RE ALL FREE. THE WONDERFUL PROGRAMS BENEFIT TREMENDOUSLY FROM THE FUNDS RAISED THROUGH OUR VERY OWN RELAY FOR LIFE OF WESTON , TO BE HELD THIS YEAR APRIL 14TH/15TH. Hope Lodge- acing cancer is hard. Having to travel out of town for treatment can make it even harder. Yet the American Cancer Society has a place where cancer patients and their caregivers can find help and hope when home is far away an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge. Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free, temporary place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows guests to focus on getting well. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Every Hope Lodge also offers a variety of resources and information about cancer and how best to fight the disease. Road to Recovery- Every day thousands of cancer patients need a ride to treatment, but some may not have a way to get there.

The American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program provides transportation to and from treatment for people who have cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their cars so that patients can receive the life-saving treatments they need. Look Good...Feel Better - The Look Good...Feel Better program is a community-based, free, national service. It teaches female cancer patients beauty tips to look better and feel good about how they look during chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Volunteer beauty professionals lead small groups, usually about 6 to 10 women, through practical, hands-on experience. Women learn about makeup, skin care, nail care, and ways to deal with hair loss such as with wigs, turbans, and scarves. Each woman gets a free makeup kit to use during and after the workshop. R.O.C.K. Camp- Cancer can make
children feel different from other children, and that may be one of the disease’s worst side effects of all. That’s what makes R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) Camp so special. The American Cancer Society’s R.O.C.K. Camp, in partnership with Camp Boggy Creek, serves children and teenagers ages 7-16 who are referred by pediatric oncology centers and private practices and are currently being treated for cancer or who have received cancer treatment. For more detailed information regarding any of these programs, please contact Nicole Manuel, ACS Community Representative, at 954954-200-7536 or Nicole.Manuel@ cancer.org. For more detailed information regarding Relay For Life of Weston, including how you can participate and/or help with donations, please contact Ross Sabath, Event Chair, at 954-309-6321 or westonrelayforlife@comcast. net. Memorial Hospital West: Growing with the Community for Two Decades
S MEMORIAL ADVERTORI AL ince opening in 1992, Memorial Hospital West has grown from a 100-bed hospital near the edge of the Everglades to Broward County’s third-largest and one of South Florida’s most comprehensive healthcare facilities. Over this same period of time, southwest Broward County was among the fastest-growing areas in the nation. “Growing up together provided valuable insight,” says C. Kennon Hetlage, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer at Memorial Hospital West. “Today, the hospital continues to develop services around the specific needs of the community.” The recent expansion, completed in December, increases Memorial Hospital West’s licensed beds to 384 – all private rooms. The 80 additional inpatient beds help expedite hospital admissions and reduce waiting times for patients in the Emergency Department – the third-busiest in the county with more than 88,000 patients last year. In the new wing, an entire floor with 40 beds is dedicated to advanced oncology treatments for patients of the Memorial Cancer Institute. Broward County’s first inpatient bone marrow transplant unit makes it possible for patients to receive this intensive, specialized treatment locally. In the past, patients often had to relocate to another region of the country for lengthy transplant procedures. Another floor in the new wing houses medical/surgical and telemetry units with

a total of 40 beds. Even the hospital’s new entrance and lobby were thoughtfully designed with large windows, soft colors and a player piano to create a welcoming, healing environment. “Residents have trusted us with their care for almost two decades,” says Hetlage. “We’re so pleased to offer these enhancements. They clearly demonstrate our unwavering commitment to improving the health of our community.” As the hospital prepares for its 20th anniversary in April, its wide-ranging programs and services paint an impressive picture. Last year alone, Memorial Hospital West admitted more than 22,000 patients with a diverse array of medical needs. Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute’s Rapid Response Heart Attack Teams and Memorial Neuroscience Center’s Brain Attack Teams are saving lives around-the-clock, while Memorial’s
Outpatient Rehabilitation Center is among the county’s busiest. Memorial Cancer Institute, with CyberKnife® and RapidArc™ technology, and Memorial Breast Cancer Center are the leading programs in Broward County. Florida’s first Image Recovery Center® uses innovative methods to help patients adjust to cancer treatment and recovery. With almost 5,000 deliveries last year, the Family Birthplace at Memorial Hospital West is the largest obstetrical program south of Orlando and is third-largest in the state. Parents are reassured by the level II neonatal intensive care unit. “As surely as healthcare continues to change, South Florida will continue to grow and evolve,” says Hetlage. “Memorial Hospital West is dedicated to providing the superior patient- and family-centered care our community trusts – today and for generations to come.”

World Golf Championships Cadillac Championship n early-spring tradition for the last 50 years is right around the corner as the PGA TOUR returns to South Florida next month for the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship. The famed TPC Blue Monster course at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, A Marriott Resort, will again host the game’s top players from around the globe during the 2012 Cadillac Championship, March 7-11. The Cadillac Championship is one of four World Golf Championships events on the professional golf calendar designed to bring together the game’s top players. While the Cadillac Championship has only called TPC Blue Monster at Doral home since 2007, professional golf and the PGA TOUR have a long history at this venerable layout. TPC Blue Monster at Doral first played host to the PGA TOUR in 1962 with Billy Casper winning the inaugural Doral CC Open Invitational. The setting for many of golf’s greatest moments over the last half century, the list of past champions at TPC Blue Monster at Doral reads as a who’s who of professional golf. Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have all tamed TPC Blue Monster at Doral en route to victory. In 2011, Nick Watney claimed

MUSEUM OF ART including The Descent from the Cross and The Resurrection. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world. It is housed in an impressive structure erected between 1560 and 1574 by Cosimo I de’ Medici that served as the judicial and government offices of the Tuscan state. Giorgio Vasari, a friend of Michelangelo who coined the term Renaissance, was its architect. It now houses one of the great collections of paintings and tapestries– many of which were originally owned or commissioned by members of the powerful Medici family. Available to visitors by special request beginning in the 16th century, the Uffizi Gallery was officially opened to the public in 1765.
The exhibition is coming to the United States through the efforts and encouragement of the Amici degli Uffizi, which was established in 1993 by a group of concerned Florentine citizens following a terrorist bombing which damaged the Gallery and some of its impressive artworks. A fully-illustrated 167-page exhibition catalogue ($39.95) is available at Books & Books in the Museum lobby. Tickets include an audio guide and are priced at: $18 for adults ($10 for adult Members of the Museum), $15 for seniors and Military, and $10 for children (ages 6-17). Group rates are available for groups of 10 or more by contacting the Group Sales Office at 954-262-0204 or moagroupsales@ moafl.org.

ROMANTIC BROWARD BROWARD DISCOVERING THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY
BY JEFF PERLMAN
To be honest, the words romance and Broward County are not often used in the same sentence. When one thinks of rom mantic locales the mind drifts to placess like Paris, Florence and Saint Tropez.. And to be honest thosee places are pretty romantic. Saint Tropez, is a beautiful seaside resort th hat has been dubbed the playground fo or jetsetters, fashion models, and million naires, and it is most-enduringly known as the place where the iconic Brigitte Bardot was “discovered”. Florence has beautiful piazzas, romantic cafes and aweinspiring works of art. And d Paris, well Paris is Paris. But as we approach Vallentine’s Day we encourage the romanticcs among our readers to reconsider Brow ward County. Whether it’s a gorgeous sunset over Fort Lauderdale beach, an intimate stroll along Las Olas Boulevard or adventurous forays througgh the famed River of Grass—Broward County is a hopeless romantic’s dream m location. To get your hearts racin ng and your imaginations fired up, we offer a few tips for your Valentine’s Daay pleasures.

Romantic Districts
While the arts and romance go together, ambience—a sense of place—is also important. Broward is full of romantic spots including the legendary Las Olas Boulevard, one of Florida’s most walkable streets. Nothing beats a slow stroll on Las Olas where you can take in the sights and sounds of an historic street pulsing with activity. Nearby is the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District, a 22-block long area chock full of restaurants, cafes, shops, and art galleries along the banks of The New River. Paris eat your heart out. We recommend a visit to the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale which is featuring an exhibit “Offering of the Angels” Old Master Paintings and Tapestries from the Old Masters from the world famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy through April. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world. Impress your beloved with your knowledge of art. This rare exhibit—visiting only four U.S. cities—features tapestries and paintings by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including Botticelli, Parmigianino, Allori, Giordano, and Lorenzo Monaco, among many others. All of the 45 works of art in the exhibition are related to the theme of forgiveness, always a good thing when we’re talking about love. If you find yourself in western Broward check out The Weston Town Center on Market Street in the heart of Weston. Your loved one is sure to enjoy the shops, wine tastings and dining.

Broward is fortunate to have hundreds of wonderful restaurants which makes it impossible to choose the most romantic. By no means is this a complete or exhaustive list, but we came up with a few options for a romantic dinner. For beach area dining consider 33rd and Dine French Café . This gem is not only near the beach, it is inexpensive as well. And of course it’s a French restaurant, which gives it some added romantic points. You never know what you’ll find at this eclectic café—we were there recently and were treated to delicious crepes and the sight of stylish women wearing some amazing hats. We recommend the Veal Normandie and of course the crepes and escargot, which we believe is an aphrodisiac. We particularly love these hidden gems. 33rd and Dine is located in a small shopping center off of A1A in Fort Lauderdale at 3330 N.E. 33rd Street. For information, please call 954-630-0235 No list of romantic spots in Broward would be complete with a mention of the famous Café Martorano, which has become a worldwide sensation as a result of the unique vision and persona of chef/proprietor Steve Martorano, who has been featured on “Housewives of Miami” and is the author of his own book “Yo Cuz The Italian American Cook” and star of
his own web series. The food is sensational. The vibe is amazing and you never know who you’ll run into when you dine. Café Martorano has three locations, the Hard Rock, Oakland Park Boulevard and Vegas. Visit www.cafemartorano.com for information and entertainment. When in Coral Springs, you’ll want to check out Runyon’s, 9810 Sample Road, a longtime favorite of locals. With an almost 30-year track record of success, Runyon’s is a romantic restaurant with a piano bar, a nice wine list and great food. For information and reservations call (954) 752-2333. Also on our must-visit list: If you love steak visit Weston’s Ireland’s Restaurant, 250 Racquet Club Road, at the Hyatt Regency Bonaventure. If your love interest enjoys the genteel and the classy visit Hidden Tea Secrets, 6682 Parkside Drive in Parkland. Fine china, Victorian ambience, silver and linen—perfect.

GOLD GOLD STORY as a Hedge Investment BY JIM FREER
AMID ECONOMIC PROBLEMS IN EUROPE, ONGOING TURMOIL IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND CONTINUED UNCERTAINTIES ABOUT THE U.S. ECONOMY, 2012 HAS BEGUN AS ANOTHER YEAR WHEN MANY INVESTORS ARE WONDERING “WHAT ABOUT GOLD?” They are considering getting into gold or expanding their gold investments because 2011 was the 11th consecutive year in which prices rose for that precious metal. The price of gold for immediate delivery on the London market rose 7.5 percent in 2011, ending the year at $1,524.80 an ounce. That took place during a year when the Standard & Poor’s 500 declined 0.6 percent. But it is important to know that gold’s 2011 year-end price was down about 20 percent from early September’s record highs in the $1,900 range. Gold moves in the opposite direction of the U.S. dollar, and that currency began appreciating in value last fall when many institutional investors turned to it because of concerns about the financial strength of European governments and financial systems. So, even if the past decade’s bull market for gold continues it can be expected that there will be price swings during any year. The price of gold was in the $270 range during much of 2000 and 2001 before it began a long-term rise following the September 11 attacks and the ensuing crisis in Iraq. “I expect gold will continue its long-term rise even with some corrections like we saw late in 2011,” says James DiGeorgia, founder and president of Gold and Energy Advisor in Boca Raton. DiGeorgia’s company publishes a newsletter on the markets for gold, other precious metals

BUSINESS&money and oil—with a focus on how international and U.S. economic events impact those markets. He expects that Europe’s banking and financial problems will remain a major issue in 2012, and cites that as a main reason for his forecast that the price of gold will be above $2,100 an ounce by the end of this year. “I recommend that everyone should have a portion of their investments in gold,” he says. “It is a hedge that everyone needs. For many, it can be up to 15 percent (of investible assets).” Taking a longterm view, many financial advisors in South Florida and around the country emphasize that gold should be viewed foremost as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainties. Thus, having a portion of assets in gold can be a prudent strategy for many investors no matter the overall world financial environment. The percentage of investable assets to have in gold varies among investors based on factors that include their ability and willingness to tolerate price swings and its high degree of downside risk compared with some other investments. Scot Hunter, CEO of Emerald Asset Advisors. LLC in Weston, notes that gold prices have historically experienced extremely long bull and bear periods. After peaking in 1980, gold drifted downward for nearly 20 years before reversing course. Emerald Asset Advisors, a Registered Investment Advisor, says on its Web site that it provides fee-based, discretionary asset management to its private and institutional clients. “Regardless of whether gold prices head higher or lower in the near term, we believe gold is a unique asset that deserves a spot in any diversified portfolio,” Hunter says. He adds that gold can help stabilize portfolio returns during periods of extreme market volatility and may serve several

might consider mutual funds, direct investment in gold mining stocks or purchase of gold bullion. His preferred investment is gold coins produced by the mints of the United States and other governments. A buyer can take possession, and the coins are liquid. DiGeorgia’s company includes a coin dealership. To avoid mark-ups or problems such as a dealer not delivering the coins, he suggests that buyers contact local offices of the Better Business Bureau before buying gold coins from a dealer. The U.S. Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf and Chinese Panda are among coins that he recommends for investment. Gold jewelry should be purchased “for the love of it” and not as an investment, DiGeorgia says, because mark-ups for purchase often are high and because its market is not as liquid as other types of gold. DiGeorgia advises investors to check with their financial advisors to determine how much of their assets they should invest in gold. He recommends a maximum of 15 percent, unless you anticipate the onset of a worldwide recession or similar economic catastrophe. If gold prices become out of reach for some investors or hit levels that some consider overpriced, he says investors might consider silver which is sometimes called “the poor man’s metal,” In early January, silver was trading in the range of $29 an ounce.

other purposes, including: s ! HEDGE AGAINST A WEAK DOLLAR s )Nm ATION 0ROTECTION s ! This can help smooth out portfolio returns over time, he adds. On its Web site, Emerald Asset Advisors says it invests in gold through Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and mutual funds that invest in gold mining stocks. DiGeorgia says some investors

GULFSTREAM PARK A MIX OF RACING, DINING AND OTHER ER FUN BY JIM FREER
GULFSTREAM STORY
64
FEBRUARY 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM
SPORTS FANS WHO LIKE TO WATCH AND WAGER ON SOME OF THE COUNTRY’S TOP THOROUGHBREDS ARE DOING THAT AGAIN THIS YEAR AT GULFSTREAM PARK, WHICH HAS LIVE RACING THROUGH APRIL 8. Meanwhile, many other South Floridians and visitors are finding that you don’t have to be an expert handicapper to enjoy a day and maybe an evening at Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach. The clubhouse building that Gulfstream opened in 2006 is a year-round venue with two restaurants, two casino rooms, poker tables and a night club-like room that is available for parties and other events. Fans who like to enjoy a day outdoors and watch races from the rail can do that in a tiki bar and picnic area less than 200 yards from the finish line. Next door, just a few steps from the racing area, is The Village at Gulfstream Park--a 60-store mix of restaurants, boutiques and other shops. The Village of Gulfstream Park opened in 2010. It is a joint venture of Stronach Group, the Aurora, Ont.-based parent company of Gulfstream, and of Forest City Enterprises, a Cleveland-based real estate developer. “Our Chairman, Mr. Frank
Stronach, continues to invest in thoroughbred racing while improving the fans’ experience by constantly upgrading the facility at Gulfstream,” said Tim Ritvo, Gulfstream’s president and general manager. Ritvo is a former trainer and jockey, and he has worked in management at Suffolk Downs in East Boston, Mass. So, it is not surprising that his biggest focus is on racing, “On any given day at Gulfstream, fans could be watching the next Florida Derby winner or one of several Triple Crown contenders,” Ritvo said. He added that Gulfstream each year “has the finest turf and older horses anywhere in the world.” Trainer Ian Wilkes calls Gulfstream’s annual race meet “probably the best in the East, other than Saratoga.” Wilkes is a regular each summer at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. From April to November he also has horses at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., and at

other tracks in Kentucky and New York. Each winter, he is among the several dozen prominent national trainers who send many of their top horses south to Gulfstream or to its affiliate Palm Meadows training center in Boynton Beach. In races at Gulfstream, those horses compete with horses that are stabled year-round at Calder Casino & Race Course in Miami Gardens. Calder has racing from early April through early December, and Gulfstream runs during the remainder of the calendar. “The big attraction is the weather,” Wilkes said of Gulfstream. The warm and usually dry South Florida winters allow trainers to plan schedules for horses with few disruptions. Gulfstream also has several turf races each day, during months when turf courses are closed at tracks in northern states. As always, February and March will be the peak months in Gulfstream’s racing season. It will have at least one stakes race on each Saturday and Sunday (see chart with highlights). The Florida Derby, which has a $1 million purse and also is Gulfstream’s biggest annual race in prestige, will be on Saturday March 31 and will headline a day with six stakes races. It is 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-olds and is one of the major prep races for the Kentucky Derby and the other Triple Crown races. Barbaro in 2006 and Big Brown in 2008 are among horses that won the Florida Derby and later the Kentucky Derby. In 2010, Ice Box won the Florida Derby and finished second in the Kentucky Derby. Last year, Shackleford finished second in the Florida Derby and later won the Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore. In early January, Union Rags and Hansen were among 3-year-olds being touted for the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 26 and later for the Florida Derby. Motor City, trained by Wilkes, is another contender for those races. Anyone planning to get seats and restaurant reservations for the Florida Derby would be wise to contact Gulfstream, at (954) 454-7000, as early as possible. Sheldon Glass of Pompano Beach is among the fans who will be at Gulfstream on Florida Derby Day, and he is there on many other days in the Silks Simulcast room on the track’s ground floor. Silks is open year-round. When Calder

is running, Gulfstream televises and takes bets on live races at that track and on races at other tracks. During Gulfstream’s live season its simulcast menu is headed by Aqueduct, Tampa Bay Downs and Santa Anita. “They do a great job here,” Glass said. “The management is always listening to the fans, and is ready to make changes.” Among the things Glass likes at Gulfstream are the food at the concession stands and the race calls of announcer Larry Collmus. Collmus also calls the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes on NBC. Glass and Wilkes each said that one of the few drawbacks at Gulfstream is, basically, “there aren’t enough seats facing the track.” That is a frequent comment about “the new Gulfstream.” The track’s long-time grandstand/ clubhouse building had about 20,000 seats facing the track. But it was full only for the Florida Derby and other big days. On weekdays, several sections were often empty. Gulfstream now has only about 850 outdoor seats in the area near the finish line, and facing the track. Gulfstream’s smaller seating area, where some sections are free on weekdays, is part of the facility built for what it hopes is a new-era mix of racing and entertainment. This season, Gulfstream added 250 covered seats in the area near the tiki bar. The new seats are free every day. Gulfstream also has installed six enhanced, higher-resolution Daktronics LED-display giant screens. That includes the main screen/tote board at the finish line. Every Saturday during its race meet, Gulfstream hold its Breakfast at Gulfstream program from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. in its Tiki bar/picnic area.
FEBRUARY 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM
Fans can watch horses work out on the track. They also can meet jockeys and trainers as Collmus and handicappers Ron Nicoletti and Jessica Pacheco. Admission to Breakfast at Gulfstream is free. There is an $8 charge for the unlimited breakfast buffet.

The adage – “You never get a second chance to make a first impression” – takes on added significance for professional services firms. Unlike with Coca-Cola or the iPhone, whose brands and reputations can rise and fall – and rise again, promoting and perfecting the personal reputations of those in professional services firms must be more closely and constantly honed and protected. Any blemish on the brand can have negative long-term effects that can be difficult – if not impossible – to remove. of weight gain. With your other symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, and constipation, I’m thinking that you have an untreated thyroid condition [2].” “I begged my other doctors to treat me for that, but they all said no.” “Some doctors focus too much on lab tests without considering the patient’s history and physical exam findings [3]. Thyroid hormone resistance is more common than people realize.” Alyson sat with a puzzled look on her face. “So, even if these doctors said my tests were normal, I might still have a thyroid problem? [4]” “The word ‘normal’ has many meanings. There is a difference between ‘common’ and ‘optimal’ [5]. Rather than using a range that includes people who are overweight and being treated for high cholesterol and other conditions, perhaps it would be better to use narrower ranges of persons who feel ‘dandy’ [6].” “Does anyone even use that word anymore?” “My practice is built on patientto-patient referrals. Just liking my bedside manner is not enough to convince your friends to see me. You have to glow. So yes, I do plan on making you feel dandy.” After finishing Alyson’s physical exam, my staff used our Korr indirect calorimetry machine to measure her metabolic rate [7]. “You’re at ‘minus 20%’. That’s one of slowest metabolism’s I’ve ever seen!” “How do we fix that?”

Alyson continued to tell me her story. “For example, this past summer, my best friend flew me to their home in Sonoma for an entire month. We ate nothing but organic everything, lean protein, I drank 150 ounce-plus of water a day and did a high intensity workout every morning mixing up interval training with boot camp at her gym. In exactly 30 days – I lost a grand total of THREE pounds. I didn’t even lose the initial ‘water weight’ everyone else loses.” I empathized, “It’s hard to stay motivated with minimal results.” “I’m willing to starve myself, if that would work. I even did two rounds of hCG. My wallet’s lighter, but that’s about it.” “The FDA recently published a website, www.fda.gov/hcgdiet, detailing how hCG diet products are illegal, and how restrictive diets such as that one can cause electrolyte disturbances, an irregular heartbeat and are potentially fatal.” I continued, “But looking at your diet history, I don’t think the problem is one of eating too much.” “Dr. Woliner, what else could it be? I have a friend that blew up taking Abilify for her depression, and another while on Actos for diabetes, but I’m not on any medications.” “It’s true that many drugs have weight gain as a common side effect [1]. But there are other causes

“I use a holistic approach that combines behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, and of course medications [8,9]. I prefer to use T3 based drugs as they have been shown to cause significantly more weight loss than T4 drugs such as Synthroid alone [10].” As I ramped up Alyson’s dose of thyroid medication, her fatigue and other symptoms began to resolve. To be on the safe side, I periodically rechecked her EKG and bone density, which remained normal [11]. “Dr. Woliner, your scale says I only lost 49 pounds, but at home, naked, I’m down 51!” Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a boardcertified family physician in private practice in Boca Raton. of the skin where fat resides. This “controlled focused energy” spurs the contraction of these deep tissues for an overall smoothing effect. The heat energy also stimulates the production of new collagen over time, resulting in firmer, tighter, smoother skin. The practitioner adjusts the strength of the delivered energy based on feedback from the patient throughout the session. The Pellevé system requires no anesthesia and treatment can be conducted in as little as 15 minutes per area. We simply, apply a thin layer of gel to your face prior to treatment. Most patients experience only a warming sensation on the skin when the Pellevé hand piece is applied. Patients often report that immediately after treatment skin feels tighter similar to Botox. When it takes effect, most patients often experience immediate results, and a reduction in the visibility of wrinkles at the treatment sites. Over the course of the next six months, you will continue to see smoother, more beautiful skin. While many patients see results after just one session of Pellevé, we may recommend multiple treatments to help you achieve your optimal aesthetic goals. The total number of treatments can vary and is based on your individual skin needs. It takes up to two months for the full effects of Pellevé to be seen. There is no downtime or side effects except the ocassional very mild swelling or redness which normally resides in an hour. WHEN “LEAKY” VA LVE S A RE AT T H E H E A RT O F THE PR OB LE M
CLEVELAND CLINIC ADVICE Your heart has four valves. They open during a heartbeat so that the blood can flow from one chamber to another and close to make sure that blood can’t leak back out. Mitral regurgitation occurs when the valve between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart does not close properly. Mitral regurgitation can be caused by progressive structural changes in the leaflets of the mitral valve, certain infectious diseases and some heart attacks. Mitral valve prolapse is a structural abnormality of the valve where the leaflets have extra tissue and are displaced from their normal position (too far backward). A small percentage of patients with mitral valve prolapse will eventually develop regurgitation. “Symptoms of mitral regurgitation include shortness of breath or difficulty catching your breath (especially with exertion), palpitations that feel like rapid or irregular heartbeats, and swelling of the feet and ankles, said Edward B. Savage, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida.. “Other symptoms are weakness or dizziness, and increasing fatigue.” An important part of the diagnosis is recent medical history. During a physical examination, your doctor may look for fluid in the lungs, an enlarged heart, or a heart murmur, which is the sound made when blood moves through a stiff or leaky valve. Your doctor may suggest further
testing for evaluation. The test to diagnose mitral regurgitation is an echocardiogram. Sound waves are aimed at the heart allowing a detailed picture of the structure of the valves, allowing the assessment of leaks. The strength of the heart muscle can also be assessed. Sometimes a higher resolution echocardiogram is needed to accurately assess the mitral valve. This is performed by passing a soundgenerating transducer into the esophagus. This study is a TEE or transesophageal echocardiogram. Not all leaky valves require surgery. If the leak is mild or moderate, it is usually treated with medication and close follow-up. However, if the leak is severe, even if there are no clear symptoms, surgery is often needed. Sometimes patients who believe they have no symptoms actually do, but have adapted to their limitations. The only treatmentt e currently available ral for severe mitral ery. regurgitation is surgery. reat It is important to treat the problem before the heart has lost significant functional capacity. In most cases the valve can be repaired (>80%). Studies show that mitral valve repair results in: UÊLiÌÌiÀÊ } ÌiÀ ÊÃÕÀÛ Û> Ê UÊ ÀiÊ«ÀiÃiÀÛ>Ì Ê vÊ i>ÀÌÊ function UÊ ÜiÀÊÀ Ã Ê vÊV « V>Ì ÃÊ

If the valve can be repaired, no long-term use of blood thinners (anticoagulants) is required. Some valves cannot be repaired and require replacement. Whether repair repaired or replaced, most patie experience dramatic patients impr improvement in symptoms and functional status. N Nearly all isolated mit mitral valve repairs or re replacements can be p performed using a m minimally invasive approach through a 2-3-inch incision on the right side of the chest. The doctors at Cleveland Clinic Florida are experts with extensive experience who specialize in diagnosing and treating patients with simple and complex heart valve disease. AT LA BROCHETTE BY: MARLA LAZARUS
Since opening in 1993, La Brochette Bistro’s Chef/owner Aboud Kobaitri has been fine tuning his talents, exemplifying his creativity and his experiences gained from traveling the world. On any given evening you can find hints of his Middle-Eastern background, his strong base of French cuisine, his experience with Scandinavian food, and of course the influences of Florida seafood. Having a constant desire to create and improve on his craft has led Chef Aboud to experiment with many of the wonderful fresh Hawaiian seafood obtainable, only adding to the large variety of seafood made available to him here in South Florida. What has resulted is a menu both eclectic and full of surprises for the discriminating palate. He encompasses a wide range of items too broad to remain on a fixed menu and warranting a list of verbal specials presented each evening. You are in for a special treat on each and every visit. Our culinary adventure began with an assortment of appetizers including

irresistible French Brie Cheese served warm on grilled pineapple with mango chutney, fresh fruit salsa and Spanish marcona almonds, Conch Schnitzel filet seared in Japanese bread crumbs with caper lime sauce. The tender Grilled Calamari is served with a garlic herb butter sauce and the fresh Risotto Crab Cake with lobster sauce is delectable. Baked Escargot with wild mushroom and garlic herb butter melts in your mouth. Don’t miss Chef Aboud’s Bruschetta of baked pita bread with zaatar, crumbled feta cheese, calamata olive and extra virgin olive oil, served with house made hummus. Each plate is a work of art. The beautiful fresh salads offered were the tabbouleh salad, combining cracked wheat (burghul), chopped tomato, cucumber, fresh herbs, lime juice and olive oil. The delicious red salad with fried almond crusted goat cheese with red beet, red cabbage in a raspberry vinaigrette as well as the Fresh Mozzarella Cheese salad with tomato, fresh basil with extra virgin
olive oil and balsamic syrup was fantastic. A house special, Beef Rib Spinalis served with Hoisen BBQ sauce and mushrooms, was grilled to perfection as was the tender venison fillet, sliced and served with brandy peppercorn sauce and the Lamb Chop with minted cabernet Sauce. With an abundant offering from the sea, we couldn’t resist the Pistachio Nuts Crusted Snapper with Key Lime beurre blanc sauce and the Amazonian Piache with chef’s special beurre noissette sauce as well as the Chilean Sea bass Marcona almond crusted served with pink horse radish sauce. The delicate Bronzini, an Italian fish is served whole, deboned and stuffed with crab in served with a lobster sherry sauce is simply amazing. Various homemade dessert offerings change daily. Don’t miss the creamy Crème Brule’ or Chef’s special decadent bread pudding, served warm and topped with vanilla ice cream. Irresistible House made cheese cake and the rich Vesuvious cake with layers of cheesecake, fudge, chocolate mousse and chocolate truffle are a perfect sweet ending to a memorable meal. For Chef Aboud, along with his wife Lori, the long hours required to run a successful restaurant are a labor of love. He has always followed his heart and it has led him to where he is able to create as his heart desires and to the appreciation of many. For a special occasion or casual night out, La Brochette Bistro is second to none. Open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner only, La Brochette Bistro is located at 2635 N. PASTIANO BOARDROOM Bringing Italy to our Shores 3ositano%each With the successful sell out of The Villas of Positano last year, The Lojeta Group moves on to its sister development, Positano Beach – an exclusive Mediterranean style community with the same blissful location and amenities as the Villas.
"Positano bites deep," wrote John Steinbeck. "It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone." And that is exactly what it feels like to be seaside at The Villas of Positano, the sold out first phase of Lon Tabatchnick’s Mediterranean dream development on Hollywood Beach. “Positano is an intimate and chic lifestyle community for those that appreciate living well,” said Tabatchnick, developer of The Lojeta Group. “Our owners love having a boutique style atmosphere and full service amenities, a unique offering on Hollywood Beach.”
The successful sell out of The Villas of Positano has driven significant pre-sales for Positano Beach. Residents are relocating from suburban neighborhoods in Broward and South Palm Beach Counties. Nestled between the ocean, the Intercoastal, and a protected wildlife area, Positano Beach gives residents convenient access to the best South Florida has to offer. Affronting the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, the property is steps from shopping and dining and a short drive from Aventura Mall, Bal Harbor Shops and Las Olas. The onsite marina can accommodate yachts of up to 100 feet, providing quick access whether by land or by sea.
breath taking views, and state-of-the-art home management systems, the residences are a piece of oceanside indulgence. Residents will enjoy the amenities of its sister property, including full-time concierge and valet service, as well as the magnificent pool and fitness facility. Seven private beach cabanas, each equipped with its own wet bar and situated around a whirlpool spa, will create an enclave of beachside paradise - the perfect sanctuary from the ordinary. “It is no surprise that our owners have sought us out as a refuge from suburban congestion and responsibility,” said Tabatchnick.
“There’s a distinct trend of wanting to move to the water, to wake up in the morning and have everything at your fingertips,” said Tabatchnick. Positano Beach offers spacious residences starting at 3200 square feet. With imported marble and granite accents, balconies with
