FEBRUERY 2013

from the publisher

VALETINE’S DAY – BCS CHAMPIONS – FREEDOM CLIMB February is for lovers, and the one day to celebrate with your significant other is going to be February 14 – Valentine’s Day! Flowers, jewelry, chocolates or dinner are some of the usual ways to show how much you care. This year, maybe we can look for some unusual ways to celebrate our feelings? One way may be to look up the variety of ways the day is commemorated around the world. In doing my own research, I found this website - www.stvalentinesday. org. I was intrigued to find how many different ways there are to reaffirm ones love. Additionally, the progression of the festival through time was also enlightening. So, however or wherever you choose to observe the occasion, I wish you and yours a memorable time. Speaking of memories, our cover story is about some local residents who will share their revelations on how they met and fell in love. One couple met on a blind date, another on the job, and one even found each other on J-Date, a Jewish dating website. Their stories are interesting and heartwarming. I trust you will reminisce back on how the one you are with first touched your heart. As for Candy and I, it was a long, long time ago, and she played hard to get. In the end, well, I got my girl. The BCS Championship game was in South Florida and brought in a large economic boost to the area. Unfortunately, this may be the last time we see the event here in our backyard, unless we’re selected

Tina Yeager: Going to the ends of the earth to fight for freedom again by some stroke of luck. With other cities building new megastadiums, the competition is pretty tough for the highly coveted title game. Still, the Crimson Tide rolled to its third championship in four years. The Alabama team is showing they are a dynasty to be reckoned with for some time. As for the Fighting Irish, they can be proud of their accomplishment of making it the championship game for the first time in twenty years. Not one preseason poll had Notre Dame finishing anywhere close to a BCS title. Congratulations to both programs. Maybe a team from the State of Florida will be there next year? I’d like to give a shout-out to two ordinary women who accomplish some extraordinary feats as well. Tina Yeager and Jen Klaassens will climb one of the highest mountains in the world to promote a project which brings freedom to women. The Freedom Climb is a symbolic gesture of the struggle for freedom they face every day. From April 9 to 25, 44 women from all over the world will meet in Nepal and trek to the base camp of Mt. Everest and then

summit the neighbouring peak of Kala Phattar. When the climbers stand at the top of Kala Phattar, they will be declaring life and freedom for those who cannot speak for themselves. w w w. T h e F r e e d o m C l i m b . n e t . Godspeed to Jen & Tina. You are both remarkable! Lastly, Lifestyle Publications knows how seriously our readers value their health. Healthcare has never played a more prevalent role in today’s society. We have formed an exclusive partnership with Holy Cross Hospital, to bring you face to face with some of the leading specialists who can inform, educate, and shine a light on the best preventative measures and latest treatments available. The first seminar will be taking place this February and you can read about it in this issue. I wish you a Great February and a Happy Valentine’s Day! As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle™

NEWS&NOTES KIM L. CAVENDISH, the president and CEO of downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Discovery and Science, is now chairwoman of something called the Giant Screen Cinema Association – whose mission is “advance the business of producing and presenting educational giant screen and immersive cinema experiences globally.” Since MODS has a popular IMAX theater, Cavendish seems quite qualified. Even more impressive: She’s the first woman to chair GSCA.

Bejeweled vacuum cleaner: Cleans up as it cleans you out Does anything sound more unromantic – and more dangerous to your health – than telling your significant other: “Honey, I bought you a vacuum cleaner as a Valentine’s Day gift”? Except if it’s this vaccuum cleaner. The Special Edition Swarovski HYLA GST was recently declared the World’s Most Expensive Vacuum Cleaner by the Guinness World Records. It features 32,000 black, gray, and white Swarovski crystals that took 100 hours of labor to hand-place. Retail price: $21,900. While three have been sold so far – one in Russia and two in Dubai – only one remains. And it’s in Hartmut Gassmann’s offices in Deerfield Beach. That’s where the Parkland resident operates the national headquarters for HYLA U.S. Gassmann. “It’s not so much for selling,” Gassman concedes. “People don’t spend $21,900 for a cleaning system.” But they do spend 10 percent of that. Gassman is the national distributor for a high-end machine that traps dirt and allergens with water instead of filters. It even comes with a TV-like remote control. “We did this for marketing,” Gassman says. “It’s a conversation piece.” It’s also a conversation piece for Gassman’s 11-year-old daughter Yasmine – that’s her posing with the world record-holder. www.hyla-us.com

Students aren’t the only ones who receive grades. So do their schools. Last month, the Florida Department of Education released its 2011-2012 high school grade results – and 82 of BROWARD’S HIGH SCHOOLS earned an ‘A’ or ‘B’ – compared to 76.3 the year before. All the county’s charter high schools earned a C or higher. Best of all, no Broward high schools received a ‘D’ or ‘F’. Grades were based on,among other things, graduation rates, participation and success in accelerated courses, and postsecondary prep. Facebook is often criticized for ruining your productivity. But one company has made it profitbale for local charities. SETNOR BYER INSURANCE & RISK, based in Plantation, decided to donate $5,000 to the charity that garnered the most votes on their Facebook page. Response was so overwhelming, the firm doubled down – donating $10,000. Half went to Voices for Children (more than 150 votes), while Hispanic Unity got $2,000 (more than 120 votes) and $3,000 was split among other charities. MARK ADLER is the new executive director at Broward Meals on Wheels, succeeding Peggy Miller, who held the post since 2006. The private notfor-profit organization has, since 1985, provided millions of meals and many thousands of hours of nutrition education and in-home assessments in Broward County.

To celebrate its 25th concert season this year, SOTA LAUNCHED 25 DAYS OF MUSIC. Throughout January, it presented a variety of musical and social events, but our favorites were the “flash mobs.” A flash mob is defiend by Wikipedia as “a group of people who assemble suddenly in

Another Smash Hit for Jason Taylor Former Miami Dolphin Jason Taylor is now an NFL analyst on ESPN, but he still enjoys smashing his opponents – except now he does it with a ping pong paddle. For the ninth year, Taylor’s foundation hosted JT’S PING-PONG SMASH. In December, his celebrity doubles table-tennis tournament was held at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood and attracted a slew of current Dolphins players (Brian Hartline, Karlos Dansby, Brandon Fields, and Anthony Fasano, among others) as well as other sports stars. They raised a total of $40,000 for Taylor’s foundation. Pictured above: Taylor with John Duffy, CEO of 3Cinternative, the title sponsor of this year’s Smash. www.jasontaylorfoundation.com

When to Work Out Getting in shape is easier when you do it on a schedule BY DAVID SHERMAN

Being a personal fitness trainer for 15 years has taught me one thing about people: They really don’t want to work out. So whenever someone wants to exercise, regardless of he time of day, I encourage it. But in my experience, there are better times of the day to lace up those crosstrainers than others.

we feel better physically and mentally – and next we are hungry from the workout.

I firmly believe that that body is trainable and will adapt if you give six weeks in a new regime. The same also applies for the way that we eat.

NIGHTS Nighttime is crucial to keeping the eating habits under control. A lot of us are night owls and go to bed too late after sitting around the house picking on the wrong food for a variety of reasons. Well, because we got up an hour earlier and exercised, we’re now going to crash earlier and avoid that extra hour of possible nighttime emotional eating.

If you intend to completely change the way you look and feel, it comes at the price of a commitment! That may mean getting up an hour earlier each morning or sacrificing something else that you would have rather done for working out. It means ordering the fruit for dessert over the chocolate decadence. Remember nothing tastes as good as being in shape feels! MORNING Let’s assume the morning workout is a possibility for you. I’ve had many clients who trained before sunrise… just saying. The first feeling we want to start our day? Gpod energy and circulation. How many times have you woken up feeling like you were in a car accident? That lack of circulation causes inflammation. The cure is increasing blood flow through exercise. So now we have worked out,

18

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

What does hunger mean? It means our metabolism is jump-started and the fat-burning is underway. We have a clear head and we feel great about ourselves. Time to eat. We’re more likely to make a good choice because we feel good and don’t want to ruin that feeling. Then one good choice turns into another – and then we end up having a good day.

Working out at night isn’t bad but just keep in mind that we usually get really hungry after workouts and now you are getting into those later hours where we want to cut down on our calories. Also, a good workout will sometimes give you a blast of energy that could keep you up later than you want. I have been known to clean my whole house after a good workout. Tomorrow we start it all over again. Remember it takes 4- 6 weeks to change and develop a new and positive habit, give yourself that time. Alas A Grand Journey through Amazing Alaska

24

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

ka

Do you know that over 60% of the visitors to Alaska each year, do so on a cruise ship? It’s certainly the easiest way to see this vast wonderland, however, it truly only is the tip of the iceberg. At SitInMySeats VIP Tickets, Travel & Concierge Services, the travel specialists are known for tailoring and customizing unique and unforgettable experiences to destinations worldwide. Alaska is no exception. So many people have already experienced cruising and are looking for ways to push their expectations when they finally plan their vacation. “We’re seeing a growing trend in our discerning clients wanting more from their destinations, more from their experiences and certainly, more from our team as we create and personalize each vacation” says Laura Hildenbrandt, Director of Travel. Recently, the team at SitInMySeats created a journey for a family looking to experience the true Alaska. The clients wanted a “grand journey” and wanted to take in as much of the landscape and

culture as they could in a period of 12 days. The result was an awe-inspiring trek that allowed the clients to take in the natural beauty, search for Alaska’s famed wildlife and learn the stories behind the sights as they traveled through some of the state’s most stunning wilderness. They visited Chugach National Forest, Kenai Fjords National Park, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Denali National Park. The wildlife experience was beyond their expectations. During this adventure, they saw marine wildlife such as sea otters, puffins, harbor seals, Steller sea lions and whales in Kenai Fjords National Park as they coasted past glaciers on their canoes. Gem of a Couple By Brandon Ballenger

T

racey Dikes’ career went from murder to diamonds. It’s a love story. In 1991, Tracey was 30, single, and a homicide prosecutor at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. Her friends had embarked on a two-week singles mission in Israel, where they had assisted some of the 14,000 Jewish refugees from Operation Solomon – which made worldwide headlines weeks earlier for airlifting those refugees out of war-torn Ethiopia. But when Tracey’s’ friends returned to share their travel adventures, they were more excited to tell her about something else: a man who had gone on the trip with them. “They told me they met the guy I needed to marry,” says Tracey, who was skeptical. “My best friend is like, ‘He’s a great guy,’ and I said, ‘Why aren’t you dating him?’” Turns out her friend – also a blond, blueeyed prosecutor – was sweet on his friend. So in August 1991, Tracey agreed to a blind dinner date set up by her matchmaker pals. Ed agreed when Tracey’s friends “told me the exact same thing: ‘We have the perfect girl for you.’” His recollection of that first date: “It was love at first sight, for sure.” Tracey’s: “I was expecting some, I don’t know, dark-haired, dark-eyed Argentine guy,” she says laughing. “He was really nice, and asked if we would like to go out again.” Ed asked her if she’d like to see a movie the following day. He doesn’t remember exactly what it was – a James Bond film, he thinks. But Lifestyles Magazine has done some investigative reporting and learned that no Bond film came out that year. It was, however, the summer of Terminator 2. Tracey agrees it was some sort of action film, but she says it definitely wasn’t that one. Regardless, she didn’t mind that it wasn’t a particularly romantic movie – she says she was “just surprised” that he followed up the very next day. Eight months later, he would propose to her – on April Fool’s Day. They were on the

island of Saint Martin in the Caribbean, at a restaurant called La Vie en Rose. But at first, she didn’t realize what was going on. When she had sat down at the table, there was a rose on her plate. “I didn’t think anything of it because of the name” of the restaurant, Tracey says. But she noticed Ed was nervous and jittery, and she could barely hear him. “He said ‘I’m fine, I’m fine’ – but we hadn’t even made it to the main course and he brought out this box and got down on his knee and asked me,” she says. “I didn’t take two bites before I was standing in the street and shouting ‘I’m getting married!’” It was still several years before they would go into the jewlery business together, but she knew Ed wanted something more. “He was in a family business on the wholesale end, but his dream was always to open a high-end retail store,” Tracey says. In 2001, he got his wish: Together they opened Weston Jewelers, which offers many of the most prestigious brands in South Florida – some exclusively. The company’s logo features two lions holding up a diamond, symbolizing the fact both Ed and Tracey are Leos. The couple was living in Weston, and Ed says, “It was always my dream to open where I lived. It took a little while but we finally did it.” Tracey loves her job and her life, but she admits to missing the courtroom. “I miss being in the know,” she says. She doesn’t like discussing the specifics of cases, but remembers one in particular... “There was a series of sexual battery cases where this particular guy was preying on European visitors, and I was involved in trying him,” she remembers. “He was convicted, but escaped police custody. But they caught him, and he should be serving for the rest of his life.” These days, she deals with much more pleasant company. “I love our concept and the people who come in every day,” Tracey says. “It’s been wonderful.”

Bringing in the Brands After 11 years in business, Weston Jewelers offers luxury brands like Baume & Mercie, Bulgari, Cartier, and Scott Kay. But getting there wasn’t easy, especially in the beginning. Brands can be very picky. “Many brands are very selective about the stores they’ll put their product into,” says Tracey Dikes. “One reason is to make sure there’s not saturation of their brand.” Other problems include small spaces and bad timing. Sometimes it’s all of the above: Take the French jeweler Cartier, for example. “They came to visit us and said we’re very interested – but unfortunately you don’t have sufficient room to display properly. You need a larger space,” Dikes remembers. They were already negotiating for more space at the time but weren’t quite ready. And sometimes the brand isn’t ready. Dikes and her husband would go to trade shows in Switzerland only to get told “‘we’re not opening any brands now,’” Dikes says. “It’s a matter of time, and they want to know what other brands you carry.” But persistence can pay off. According to Dikes, Weston Jewelers is the only independent Cartier retailer in Broward or Miami-Dade counties.

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

That’s the Ticket By Brandon Ballenger acque and Neil Scherfer met on a double date – but not with each other. And it wasn’t love at first sight. Neil remembers, “A good friend of mine was going out with her, and he needed someone to help him out” – because Jacque wanted to set up one of her friends. So they all saw a movie together. Jacque says “the relationship didn’t go anywhere after a few dates,” but the four stayed friends over the next few years. Neil and Jacque became gradually closer even as they were attending college 1,400 miles apart. Neil was working on a degree in media management at Arizona State, while Jacque was at Tennessee State for nursing. “We stayed in touch through college and hung out during spring break, summer break, stuff like that,” Neil says. About a year before Jacque graduated, they started dating. Neil says the long-distance relationship was “tough, but we saw each other enough to deal with it.” They racked up a huge phone bill for Jacque’s parents. Fast forward another six months. Neil had graduated, returned to South Florida for work, and was moving out of his apartment. Jacque was on spring break and helped him pack. “He had me going through all these boxes trying to find things,” Jacque says. “I thought I was going to open a box and find the ring.” Nope. “I don’t know why I thought that – way too many movies I guess,” she says. Although she was aggravated, she brushed it off when Neil asked her was wrong. A few days later, just before she had to go back to school, Neil said he had to meet some clients and wanted her to come. “We had tickets to the Heat game and were going out to dinner, and we were supposed meet clients of his,” Jacque says. He showed up a little late, acting obnoxious and short-tempered. He didn’t say two words to her parents. They took off in a rush, and as fate would have it, got pulled over by police just a couple minutes later. “Of course, I was aggravated and thinking he deserved this ticket,” she says.

J

As the cop was approaching the car, Neil asked, “Should I mention that my father’s with the BSO?” She shook her head. Neil rolled down the window. License and registration, the cop said. Let me get it, Neil said. “And by the way, do you know my father Rusty?” Jacque pinched his leg. The cop didn’t care who Neil’s father was and needed to see the registration. Jacque thought the cop was being “kind of a jerk.” Neil handed it over. He went back to his car and came back after a couple minutes. He said there was something wrong with Neil’s license and the car didn’t belong to him. “It’s a company car,” Neil said. You can’t drive it, the cop said. “And then he said, ‘Well, I’m going to be nice. Do you live around here? Are you married?,” according to Neil. If he was married, his wife could drive the car home. “I’m practically married,” Neil said. That’s how he remembers the moment. Jacque’s version is a little different. “He goes, ‘Well [Neil] can’t drive this car. Are you a family member or a wife? And I said I could be his wife with all the shit I put up with,” Jacque says. They agree on what happened next: Neil pulled out a little box and asked, “Will you be my wife?” “She’s like, ‘What the hell?’ – and it didn’t register,” Neil remembers. “I got out and was high-fiving my buddy and she realized, ‘He’s serious.’” “I said, ‘Well, you’re an asshole,’” Jacque remembers. And then she said yes. The cop – he really was one, and he did work with Rusty Scherer – hugged Neil and took off. He convinced her they were already running too late to meet the clients. “Let’s forget the game and just go to Nick’s on South Beach and have a great dinner,” Neil said. “We walk into the restaurant, and I end up seeing all my family and his family and friends,” Jacque says, prompting a genuinely confused question. “What are you all doing eating here?” “She still didn’t click,” Neil says. He had spent three months planning the whole thing with his dad and friends, down to ignoring Jacque’s parents to get her riled up. All except for being late and stressed – that was real. The car got a flat on the way to get her, and he was panicked that timing wit his cop pal had been ruined.

Nursing at Home Best Care was established in 1980 to provide home healthcare and help clients maintain their quality of life. It still does that today, although under different leadership. “It’s a family-owned company.,” Jacque Scherfer says. “My mother and her business partner [Alan Spector] started it 33 years ago,” Now it’s run by the founders’ kids: Scherfer and Marc Spector. The business helps match clients with caregivers at home, in hospitals, or in nursing homes. Services range from baby nurses to post-surgical care to live-in nurse aides and companions who can help with tasks like dressing and bathing. Scherfer’s husband, Neil, is national account manager at CBS Outdoor, where he sells advertising on billboards and transit from the Palm Beaches to the Florida Keys.

Love & Luck in Online Dating By Brandon Ballenger

V

icki and Jason Strochak met on JDate.com, a Jewish dating service, back in April 2003. “I had been on the site for a while, with no luck at all,” Vicki recalls. Jason? He met Vicki on his very first attempt: “This was the first time I got on the Internet, and she was the one and only date I had.” After a few messages back and forth, the two agreed to a dinner date at Mark’s on Las Olas. (That high-end restaurant closed in 2010 and was replaced by SoLita.) “My first impression of her was that she easy-going and beautiful – and she had the perfect temperament to put up with me,” Jason says. As for Vicki’s first impression, she says jason was “very nice, polite, put-together and funny.” And the date went great… “Until the end.” After a nice meal and some wine, the pair decided to take a stroll down Las Olas. It was early evening on a Sunday night. They walked and chatted, checked out a water taxi, and lost track of time. And when they came back to the restaurant, the lights were off and everybody was gone. “When we got back, it turned out that the valet and restaurant were closed – and all the keys were locked up inside,” Vicki says. “And Jason had valeted his car.” So she gave him a ride home. But of course, his house keys were with his car keys. “I had to keep my cool and make it seem like it didn’t bother me,” Jason says. Vicki recalls him walking around his house, trying every door. He knocked on a neighbor’s door, but no one answered. Then, she says, “He proceeded to throw rocks at his neighbor’s window.”

“My buddy Charlie came down and let me in his house,” he remembers. He went to work the next morning in the same rumpled clothes, but since he was the owner, it was no big deal. “People thought the date went real well,” he says. Later, he walked over to Mark’s to get his keys back. “I tried to get a free dessert out of it, but they said no. Probably why they’re out of business,” he jokes. Jason called Vicki and set up a second date the next day. He was late. “I thought he stood me up, but he was at a business dinner that ran very late,” Vicki says. The third date was a concert – which was cancelled. “We went to see Matchbox 20, and the drummer comes out and says [singer Rob Thomas] got laryngitis,” Jason says. “We just went out to a bar somewhere. We had these obstacles, but it worked out, and there wasn’t any drama.” Jasn proposed to Vicki in Aruba, and it went off without a hitch. In his toast speech at the wedding, the best man revealed why Jason had never gotten any other dates through JDate: he’d sabotaged Jason’s profile a few weeks into their relationship while Jason slept over one night. Recalls Jason: “Where it says, ‘What’s your ideal first date?’ he changed it to ‘Hooters and then a strip club.’ And for profession, he wrote like something like circus clown. And he put profile pictures of weird-looking guys with their shirts off. So I never got any other responses.” But instead of hurting their budding relationship, like every other little misfortune along the way, the prank helped cement it. Their seventh anniversary will be this June.

Tag, Title, and Charity The Strochak family owns and operates Florida Auto Tag Management Group, which provides tag and title services (including personalized plates) at several locations across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Volusia counties. They also run a Groupon-like daily deals website, GottaHalfIt.com. The couple is also very active with charity work. “It became a bigger part when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, and after she beat it she devoted her time to help find how to prevent it and get early detection,” Jason Strochak says. They rounded up 15,000 signatures and raised $60,000 in partnership with Susan G. Komen and the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition to create a custom license plate to support the cause. Both Jason and his wife are involved with the Boys & Girls Club, and Vicki has a few other endeavors. “She has been working for the Reach for the Stars Foundation which helps people with cystic fibrosis, and she’s also president of the PTA organization of the [Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El] school,” Strochak says.

Zero to 60 – in Three Years By Brandon Ballenger

R

afael Jorge met his wife Susan when they were both teenagers. But he wasn’t allowed to date her until he got another job. It wasn’t his parents or hers who made that rule. It was Marriott. Rafael and Susan were working at a Marriott hotel in Miami. He was 19 and she was 17. Rafael was a supervisor, and Susan recalls, “I was working at one of the restaurants, and I came up to ask him for change to $100.” Rafael didn’t have change, so he went to the front desk to ask. No one there did, either. What kind of upscale hotel doesn’t have change for $100 bill? “I expressed that opinion, and he didn’t like it very much,” Susan says. But Rafael did like her. “As soon as I met her, I absolutely liked her very much,” he remembers. And they became good friends working 12-hour shifts together. “We had a lot of background in common culturally, and the way we were raised in single-parent homes,” Susan says. But they weren’t allowed to date. “We worked there for three years, and strict hotel policy was: They didn’t allow management to fraternize with staff,” Rafael says. Did he ever consider breaking policy? “I mean, you always fantasize,” Refael admits. “But no, I had always been a company guy and had managers under me who had broken one of the commandments, and I wasn’t going to be a hypocrite.” He dated other girls in the meantime, and they would sometimes drop by work. Susan says she didn’t take it personally – she knew

there was a policy, and they remained good friends. Rafael says, “I always hoped it would work out between us, but I never tipped my hand and kept my feelings reserved.” That is, until he took a leave of absence from Marriott to start his own business, Sun Auto Tops, in 1979. (It’s now called Specialty Automotive Treatments.) “I opened it up with my life savings of $20,000 and made first payroll on my Visa,” Rafael says. And he asked Susan out on the first day he was his own boss. But he needed help from his father. “I needed an excuse to ask her out,” Rafael says. “My father was flying in from Venezuela, so I said, ‘I need a date that speaks Spanish and would you mind coming along.’” Rafael spoke the language too, but he claimed she was more fluent. “We had dinner with his father, and it was pleasant,” Susan says. “Then we dropped him off and went off to a nightclub in Miami Beach – and had our first kiss on the pool deck.” Rafael says he knew by the second date, “We were going to spend life together.” After a couple months, Rafael called Marriot and said, “I don’t think I’ll be coming back for a while.” Or ever, as it turned out. Now 32 years later, Specialty Automotive Treatments is a family business with 75 employees. “My daughter Cristina runs the wholesale division and my son Rafael Jr. runs the retail division,” Rafael says. “I’m blessed to work with my kids.” And he has Marriott to thank for them.

Everything Under the Sunroof When Rafael Jorge opened his business in 1979, he was in his mid-20s. It was called Sun Auto Tops because that’s all he offered: aftermarket sunroofs. But slowly over the years, Rafael offered more aftermarket items for cars and trucks, until in 2001, he changed the name of the company to Specialty Automotive Treatments. Now he sells just about any modification you can think of for cars and boats – from leather interiors to wheels, tires, electronics, marine audio/video equipment, body kits and custom exteriors. Up until 2008 – when the business opened a $5 million, 15,000-squarefoot showroom on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale – the company sold products only to dealers. Jorge, who also lives in Fort Lauderdale, says working with those dealers was the key to his success. “Once you have a dealership and you show proper service and etiquette and that you can make them money adding accessories, you have a partner for life. We’ve got dealerships we’ve been serving for 32 years.”

jim clark

Ten days after slamming into a tree in Tennessee, 47-year-old Jim Clark had lost 25 pounds and showed scars running across his ribs.

“I just heard cracks. It wasn’t the tree.” A Broward businessman’s super-healthy lifestyle of triathlons and free diving almost killed him. Then it saved him. BY RYAN CORTES

L

ast July, Jim Clark was on vacation in Tennessee. He’d taken his wife and two children to visit his parents about an hour south of Nashville. Just after sunup on the last day of that vacation , he felt the need to unwind. So he went on a 50-mile bike ride through the mountains. He never finished it. Clark was two weeks away from competing in an Ironman triathlon – a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26-mile run that has killed participants in the past. The 46-yearold Fort Lauderdale entrepreneur had finished one before, so a 50-mile bike ride was a leisurely stroll. But only a few miles before he was back at his parents’ home, he saw a large yellow Labrador in his path. Vlark had been chased by dogs before while riding. It can be scary. But this 80-pound beast just followed him with a wagging tail. “All right, buddy, you have to go home,” Vlark said. The dog refused. That’s when he saw the red pit bull. “I remember his eyes,” Clark says. “I remember him looking at me.” The pitbull took off toward them. “With a vengeance,” Clark remembers. The yellow lab scurried toward Clark’s bike, turning the handles 90 degrees. He went flying down the embankment at 25 mph, flipping twice before slamming into a tree 10 yards away. “I just heard cracks,” Clark says. “It wasn’t the tree.” PAIN: THAT FAMILIAR FEELING Pain was nothing new for Jim Clark. As a 2-year-old, he was diagnosed with asthma. At 5, he was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes, a degenerative cartilage disease – he spent two years in a wheelchair. “I don’t remember ever feeling pity,” Clark recalls. “I was just dealing with it. That certainly does something to your character, I think. Building some tolerance for bad times, it helps you want to strive and do things.” And strive he did. As an adult, he tore up his ankle while water skiing and his ACL while snow boarding. On his 40th birthday, he injured his back jumping on a trampoline

people In June of 2004, Clark went surfing in Bali, Indonesia. This was the tail end of a 15 foot wave he surged through.

In June of 2007, Clark had a biking accident with friends, crashing into A1A’s pavement. His friends followed his ambulance ride and went to tell his wife, Linda. She wasn’t surprised.

with his kids. But the pain he felt after this bike crash was something new. After hitting into the tree, a delusional Clark began patting the ground, looking, hoping, to wake up from a dream. “It wasn’t a dream,” he said. “Figured that out in about 20 seconds.” He didn’t yet know that his shoulder had tears in two ligaments, his hip was cracked, and so were eight “My entire left side was just broken. ribs. “My entire left side was I could feel my ribs banging up just broken,” he says. “I against each other. It was like Jello.” could feel my ribs banging up against each other. It was like Jello.” Crawling along, he made his way up the embankment. Short of breath, Clark collapsed in a heap, his head in the road, his legs resting on the lane markers. Twenty minutes passed before a car came and found his bloodied body. Clark couldn’t talk, other than to mutter the word, “Ribs.” While paramedics rushed to the scene, Clark recalled that the pit bull has disappeared, but the yellow lab was still there. THE WORST ISN’T OVER At the hospital, X-rays showed eight broken ribs and a punctured lung. Clark said his shoulder hurt. “We’re not worried about soft tissue,” a doctor replied. “We’re worried about you living.” He was loaded into another ambulance and rushed to an emergency care unit at Vanderbilt University. His 10-year-old son Kelly arrived and had one question: “Is this my dad? It’s kind of really scary to see. It freaked me out.” After a week, doctors were nearly ready to release him. His brother Duane was flying up to drive him and his family home. On that very day, Clark recalls: Doctor comes in and goes, ‘There’s something we just can’t figure out. You have this mass in your lung sac. This gray thing. We don’t know what it is.’” But it’s near the hear, and he might not survive the surgery. Before he’s wheeled into operating room, Clark writes a letter to his children and stuffs it inside a spiral notebook.

52

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

Everything went dark again. “Soon as I woke up,” Clark says, “I knew it was the worst-case scenario.” Doctors found a mass staph infection growing on his chest – MRSA, which becomes more resistant to treatment the longer it’s there. They had to screw titanium plates to three of his ribs so they could get the leverage to scrape off the mass. “Everyone that came in the room,” his brother Duane recalls, “they said he would have a much, much better recovery than anyone else because he kept himself in such good health.” Still, it was a close call. Clark’s wife Linda recalls, “I couldn’t get upset or cry in front of him, because he was being really strong and if I did that, then he would know, because there were moments we didn’t think things were going to go very well, so I had to kind of hide everything.” But doctors had reached the infection in time. On Aug. 10, two-and-a-half weeks

after ramming into that tree, Clark was set to go home. When Clark hobbled out of his wife’s car that day, Kelly remembers, “He looked like he had been in the ocean for a month or so. Just drying out there. It was just scary.” Or as his brother Duane described it, “He looked like a P.O.W. because he had lost so much weight.” When Clark got home, he wept. “I try to look for the why, for the reason. I didn’t see any. There was no white light experience. Heaven’s door didn’t open up and invite me in or shut me out. Nothing like that. I felt like I just needed to calm myself down and get through it.” Nearly six months after his accident, Clark was back to his day job — “looking for deals” as he calls it. He’s a local entrepreneur who has flipped businesses in healthcare for the last 15 years. He was also back to riding his bike. He wasn’t in perfect health yet, but his wife Linda understood. “It’s Jimmy, that’s what makes him happy,” she says. “He doesn’t do anything small. And that’s great. But I think he needs to do it in a way that’s safe – especially

After a day of fishing in 2010, Clark settled in with his two sons, Dylan (left) and Kelly (right).

when you have a family and you have to be around.” One of his best friends, Mike Bush, the owner of Pivotal Fitness in Fort Lauderdale says that after doctors told Clark he needed to stay on the couch and gia nweight, Clark snuck into the garage at odd hours to pedal on his stationary bike anyway. “That’s totally Jimmy’s mentality,” Bush says. “He’s not supposed to run? He’ll run. When he wears out the cartilage, he’ll stop running.” LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | FEBRUARY 2013

This year, during the 16th annual Women of Vision Luncheon on Wednesday, February 6, Young At Art is honoring community activist Nelly Rice as Young At Art Volunteer of the Year and Chantal Nichtawitz of IKEA Sunrise as Young At Art Corporate Partner of the Year. Broward County Commissioner Lois Wexler will serve as honorary chair. “Both Nelly and Chantal have gone above and beyond with their support of all of our efforts both here in our fabulous new Museum and in years past,” said Mindy Shrago, CEO of Young At Art Museum. “They were an integral part of the team that created unforgettable grand opening events for us as well as volunteering behind the scenes for various programs, special events and fundraising activities.” Beginning at 11 a.m., guests will enjoy tours of the Museum followed by a luncheon in the Museum’s picturesque courtyard, featuring elegant courses of epicurean delights, from creative hors d’oeuvres and soups to an enticing main entrée and gourmet desserts. As in years past, the 16th Annual Women of Vision Luncheon will benefit the Museum’s creative and pioneering programs for underserved and at-risk youth,

Eliminate stubborn ffat without surgery

and bulges of stubborn fat. This revolutionary technology targets and cools unwanted fat cells in the selected area to induce a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat bulges. Unlike most other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, surgery, or downtime. Patients often spend procedure time reading, working on their laptops, or simply relaxing. It’s safe, FDA-cleared and effective. Results look natural and can be seen as early as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results after one to three months.

Settle the score with stubborn lumps and bumps like muffin tops. Then show off the body you’ve always dreamed of. HOW COOLSCULPTING WORKS Developed by Harvard scientists, CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared, patented procedure that uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin. This freezes the fat cells to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen, and your healthy cells are not affected. The great thing about CoolSculpting is that there are no knives, no cutting and no needles. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body. Most patients experience no pain. In a few months, boom: say hello to a new you.

Can you pinch an inch? or two? or three? The ugly truth is, we all have stubborn fat. And as we age, it only gets worse because gravity and Mother Nature are just plain cruel. Proper diet and exercise are not enough to keep these unwanted bulges at bay. CoolSculptingŽ is the loophole you’ve been looking for to get back the body you deserve.

Many of us have bulges of stubborn fat SPRL T\ɉU tops. unwanted bulges contain fat cells, which can be resistant to diet but not to CoolSculpting.

Ta k i n g place between Friday, March 15, and Monday, March 18, 19 fascinating authors, among them best-selling writers Dave Barry, Bob Spitz and Tess Gerritsen, will speak with South Florida booklovers, donors and students at five events, including the signature fund-raiser, A Night of Literary Feasts. “A Night of Literary Feasts takes place on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six on Saturday. It starts at 6 p.m. with a fabulous cocktail party, silent auction and book-signings with all the authors, followed by intimate dinners with one or two authors in private homes and upscale restaurants,” said Broward Public Library Foundation Executive Director Dorothy Klein More. This year’s Literary Feast has a twist – an in-depth look at the works and life of legendary

author Edith Wharton, who was born 150 years ago. Even though she died 75 years ago, and she mostly wrote about turn-of-thecentury American society, she is considered one of the most influential writers today. Four writers, all Wharton experts, will be part of Literary Feast: Jennie Fields, The Age of Desire; Irene Goldman-Price, My Dear Governess: The Letters of Edith Wharton to Anna Bahlmann; Francesca Segal, The Innocents and Richard Guy Wilson, Edith Wharton at Home: Life at the Mount. Other Literary Feast events include: LitLUNCH!, March 15th, the kickoff luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sxity-Six Pier Top restaurant; LitLIVE!, March 17; a free day of author talks, book sales and signings at Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library; and “Feast’s Night Out With Dave Barry,” 7 p.m. March 17 at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66. March 18th is Novel Day for Students, where the authors talk about their books and the craft of writing with thousands of Broward County high school students, culminating with the announcement of the winners of the annual Short Story Contest. “Literary Feast is so important to the Broward Public Library Foundation’s mission to support Broward County libraries’ programs and services,” said Library Foundation Board of Directors Vice Chair Joseph Goldstein, who is serving as Literary Feast 2013 Co-Chair with his wife Mary. Some of the authors and their books include: Ace Atkins, The Lost Ones; Kim Barnes, In the Kingdom of Men, and local author, Around Town Newspaper publisher Patrick G. Mascola, Hell on East Rock. Deals on Wheels BY BRANDON BALLENGER

David Menten runs Sawgrass Ford, the best-selling Ford dealership in South Florida. That’s no small accomplishment when you consider there 17 Ford dealerships within 50 miles of Weston, where Menten lives. Sawgrass is one of the bigger Ford dealerships in the country, too – and there are more than 3,300 of those. “Historically, we’ve been averaging near 800 cars a month, and volume’s kind of settled down to where it’s going to be a while,” Menten says matter-offactly. Last year, his dealership sold about 2,600 new cars. (Used sales vary more, he says.) That averages out to somewhere around one car every 95 minutes the doors are open. For comparison, industry analysts at Urban Science predicted the average car dealership would sell 805 vehicles in 2012. According to Menten, there are at least 300 cars on the lot at any given time, although there can be as many as 1,000 depending on the production cycle. Many of them are trucks. “Our primary business is trucks, and you’re almost always going to be replacing those if you have a fleet business or a pickup

74

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

or a tow truck you need,” Menten says. “Our best seller has always been the F-series, and we’ve also seen a swing toward smaller fuelefficient cars like the C-Max [hybrid] and Focus.” What makes the business do so well? According to Menten, the location helps – at Sunrise Boulevard and the Sawgrass Expressway, just west of Sawgrass Mills and just east of a bunch of alligators. (Which is featured in the company logo, of course.) “Part of our success is based on a great location we have out here, and our facility has a full suite of services,” says Menten. The company has 10 separate departments covering consumer and fleet sales for new and used vehicles, including online, plus financing, parts, accessories, and a body shop. He also gives credit to the long-time staff. “Our people have been with us for a long time, and being a family-owned dealership is a little different than a corporate dealership,” says Menten. “People appreciate that.” Menten’s family has been in the car business for a long time, he says. “We Sawgrass Ford had multiple franchises at one point 14501 W. Sunrise Blvd. in time, from Vero Beach down to Homestead.” But when they started Sunrise, 33323 Sawgrass Ford, they sold all the other www.sawgrassford.com dealerships. “We kind of put all our eggs in one (888) 439-8198 basket. It’s been family operated 1997,” says Menten. Apparently, it’s worked out.

Driving Hard Bargains Given his experience, we asked David Menten for some expert car-buying advice. He was eager to blow up some of the myths surrounding the process... Dealers don’t get special deals. “Every dealer pays the exact same amount for the same make and model vehicles by law. If a dealer has a lot of something, they’re going to be more willing to make a deal on it. But there’s no price advantage to shop at a bigger or smaller dealer.” You don’t have to pay a dealer’s fee. “The difference between manufacturer’s cost and a retailer invoice is three other costs. Dealers finance cars like anybody else, so you have that. There’s a [Ford] association fee, and a delivery fee to get the car to the dealership. If anybody’s adding a dealer fee alongside the taxes, that’s just additional dealer profit.” You didn’t really save thousands. “The bottom line is the best deal is going to have an average gross within $500 of a car’s price. You’re not really going to be getting a better deal by thousands, and people who think they got a better deal were probably misled. I hear all the time, ‘We’ll pay off your old car no matter how much you owe!’ – but every dealer pays off the car. They just work it in [to the new loan].”

Optimize It, They Will Come BY BRANDON BALLENGER

Exults CEO Zach Hoffman never heads to the office without his 3-year-old Boston Terrier, Kop. And while his recently expanded Fort Lauderdale headquarters has a “living room feel” and a poker table, his job isn’t all fun and games. “When it comes to a day in my work, I’m fully involved and make sure my clients feel serviced,” he says. That might mean sitting in a video conference call with a company offering an online education system to help them develop a marketing strategy, or offering tech support on ExultARC, proprietary software that he calls “the backbone of our Internet marketing platform.” The software gives clients around-the-clock access to reports and trends in their online marketing. “It lets them know how [search] keywords ranking, and where visitors are coming from, and gives them information they can use for other forms of marketing,” Hoffman says.

78

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

“We’ve very transparent on the reporting side and keep clients engaged,” he adds, which is a big part of the “value proposition” the company offers. It also does website design, social media marketing, and brand management. Hoffman started the business in 2005 as SEO.cc. (The name changed early in 2012.) Fresh out of the University of Central Florida with a degree in finance and economics, Hoffman was helping his father’s dental practice with online marketing, managing affiliate marketing websites (basically, paid online referrals) and figuring out AdWords, the service that keeps Google flush with cash. He saw the value of that kind of marketing – and capitalized on it – but realizes not everyone does. Search engine optimization, among those who’ve even heard of it, sometimes gets a bad rap. “We definitely see there’s some confusion, and some people don’t get the promise someone might have issued them in the past,” Hoffman says, alluding to scammers. That’s why his company emphasizes transparency and measurable results, along with how important it is to update your website. “What’s funny is for most of our consumers, their cellphone is newer than their website. Some people built a website five years ago and think that’s going to serve them well today,” he says. But you have to keep up, he explains: “Some people get left behind if it’s built Exults on static HTML, which is an older 1120 Federal Highway coding standard, and haven’t moved on to a content management system.” Fort Lauderdale Older sites may not display well on 954-763-1130 newer computers and mobile devices. “It’s not as friendly to a user as you exults.com could be,” says Hoffman.

Driving Hard Bargains For those looking for online marketing help, here’s Zach Hoffman’s advice... 1. It’s not all virtual. “Being able to meet and see the physical location is very effective to make sure they’re legitimate. In our industry if a company’s not answering the phone or you have to dial a few numbers that’s sometimes a warning sign there’s nobody really there.” 2. Demand tangible results and updates. “Ask about their reporting platform, what they plan to report and the frequency. You should get measurement on a milestone basis and know they can communicate what’s getting done. ” 3. Look for a focus on mobile. “A few years ago the rate of people accessing the site [by phone or tablet] was 3 to 5 percent and it’s now 15 to 30 percent. It’s a high value situation where you want to have a mobile website with touch access to a phone number, maps, bill pay, or directions.”

Getting it Done BY BRANDON BALLENGER

For Ed Cannatelli, size doesn’t matter. But time sure does. And time has dictated how the second-generation general contractor built his business. “I’ve been a general contractor my whole life. My dad was a builder, my uncle was,” says 47-year-old Coral Springs resident. After moving to Florida from Connecticut, he started Pompano Beach-based Cannatelli Builders in 2003. “What was unique about the Florida market was there wasn’t a lot of integrity with the companies in place,” Cannatelli says bluntly. “People would be surprised when I showed up on time.” That punctuality and honesty ¬– “quality work at a fair price” – earned his business a lot of referrals. Cannatelli would do “a couple little jobs for people I knew,” and then get calls from their family and friends. Nine years later, Cannatelli Builders is a fully staffed, fullservice contractor. “We don’t work out of a truck,” Cannatelli says. “We have offices, a field manager, and superintendent. We have weekly job meetings, because clients find it important to be involved.” And some of those clients have big names: Cannatelli

82

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

built the Florida Panthers’ Den of Honor at the BB&T Center, a 5,000-square-foot living history of the team with display cases featuring old jerseys, gear, and memorabilia. (That’s about one-third the size of an NHL rink full of team tributes.) He’s also wrapping up a $3.5 million project in Lake Worth, building 12 townhomes ranging in size from 1,900 to 2,300 square feet as affordable housing for artists. The project is called Urban Arts Lofts and is funded by a federal grant that the city’s community redevelopment agency is using to buy up and renovate or rebuild foreclosures. But the company still takes on smaller projects, including residential remodels and additions. They also just finished an expansion at Tavalino’s Restaurant in Coral Springs. “We did the bar and entertainment area with alcove-reflected lighting, a lot of LED lighting, and an all-lit onyx bar that’s curved and lit underneath,” Cannatelli says proudly. One of the company’s draws these days is being what Cannatelli calls “a one-stop shop kind of deal.” And that goes back to Cannatelli’s focus on time. “Back during the boom, we had a unique experience where the architects would be so busy, and we would wait an extended period of time – and it would kill the job,” Cannatelli explained. “So we brought somebody in-house to do our own revisions and our own drawings.” That not only sped up the process, it gave clients more control and flexibility to make changes. “We just opened [in late November] a new Cannatelli Builders showroom next to our facility and have our 2101 NW 33rd Street, Suite corporate headquarters, interior design, architecture, and general contracting services Pompano Beach, 33069 under one roof,” Cannatelli says. “A client 954-977-2775 doesn’t have to go out to find all these things: renderings, 3D drawings where you walk cannatellibuilders.com through the house, everything’s here.”

Expert advice: How to pick a contractor Here are a few tips Cannatelli gave us for people not familiar with general contractors... Cheaper is not always better. “The biggest mistake people make is price. You get what you pay for. Base it solely on price and you may end up regretting that decision.” Do due diligence. “Make sure they’re properly insured online [at www. myfloridalicense.com]. We see contractors who aren’t properly insured – and use somebody else’s license.” Trust but verify. “Ask for and check the references. Look for a good track record with the city, make sure there’s no violations on the state website.”

The Rotary Club of Weston Making a Difference One Mother and Child at a Time BY CAROLYN BURK, PRESIDENT

When you hear the name Susan B Anthony what comes to mind? Do you immediately think of that great civil rights leader who paved the way for women’s rights to be acknowledged and secured? If so, you would be correct. But to the Rotary Club of Weston, the name Susan B. Anthony means that and much more. For the past five years, one of the beneficiaries of the Rotary Club of Weston’s fundraising and service to the community has been the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center based right here in South Florida. The center’s primary goal is to help mothers with children recover from their addictions. For many adults this struggle with addiction often means separation from their families. This stress can make matters worse. With this unique program, the center has pioneered a way to help moms recover while keeping them united with their children. Just some of the services they provide include, supervised and safe housing, an on-site child care center, individualized treatment planning and family support services. The center not only strives to help the mother’s beat their addiction but they also work with them to develop the skills necessary to earn a sustainable income later.

Every other month members of the Rotary Club of Weston make their way to the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center. A major part of their work focuses on the children. Club members read to the children, play games and even provide healthy snacks for them. Weston Rotary Club PR Chair Bob Sands says, “It helps these mothers know they are not alone. It assures them that there are other people pulling or their success and supporting them on their journey.” In addition, the children also have an opportunity to interact with other caring adults. The other important aspect of Weston Rotary’s support of the center is called the “Gift of Giving.” Every month the club receives donations of gently used clothing, personal and household items that are in turn, given to the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center. Residents are provided with these items to not only utilize while there but to also take with them when they leave. The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center (www. susanbanthonycenter.org) is just one way the Rotary Club of Weston is making a difference in our surrounding community. For more information about the club visit their website at www.westonrotary.com.

FIBROIDS: SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTS BENNY ESQUENAZI, M.D.

Board Certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist Advanced Female Care 601 North Flamingo Road Suite #203 Pembroke Pines, FL 33028 Phone (954) 607-3811 info@afemcare.com www.bennyesquenazimd.com

Fibroids are tumors of the smooth muscle, normally found in the wall of the uterus. Uterine fibroids are common. As many as 1 in 5 women may have fibroids during their childbearing years, and about half of all women will have fibroids by age 50. The exact reasons why some women develop fibroids are unknown. Fibroids tend to run in families, and affected women often have a family history of fibroids. Women of African descent are two to three times more likely to develop fibroids than women of other races. Fibroids grow in response to stimulation by the hormone estrogen. As long as a woman with fibroids is menstruating, a fibroid will probably continue to grow, usually in a slow fashion. Fibroids can range from microscopic size to very large. They may fill the entire uterus, and may weigh several pounds. Although it is possible for just one fibroid to develop, usually there is more than one. They can grow into the uterine cavity (submucosal), into the

94

thickness of the uterine wall (intramuscular), or on the surface of the uterus (subserosal) into the abdominal cavity. Most often uterine fibroids cause no symptoms at all, so most women don’t realize they have them, they are often found during a regular pelvic examination. The ones that are symptomatic will present with: • Prolonged menstrual periods (7 days or longer) • Heavy bleeding during periods • Bloating or fullness of the abdomen or pelvis • Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis • Constipation • Pain with intercourse • Infertility In order to diagnose them, the doctor will perform a pelvic exam. This may show a change of size and shape of the uterus. An ultrasound may be done to confirm the diagnosis of fibroids. Sometimes, a pelvic MRI may be required. A biopsy of the uterine lining may be needed to rule out cancer in some occasions. Most uterine fibroids don’t need any treatment, because they don’t cause symptoms or problems. Uterine fibroids causing problems may be treated with non-surgical or surgical options. Treatment for the symptoms of fibroids may include: • Birth control pills (oral contraceptives) to help control heavy periods. • Intrauterine devices (IUDs) that

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

release the hormone progestin to help reduce heavy bleeding and pain. • Iron supplements to prevent or treat anemia due to heavy periods. • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naprosyn for cramps or pain. • Short-term hormonal therapy injections to help shrink the fibroids. THE SURGICAL ALTERNATIVES ARE: • Hysteroscopic resection of fibroids: is an outpatient procedure to remove fibroids growing inside the uterine cavity. • Uterine artery embolization: This procedure stops the blood supply to the fibroid, causing it to die and shrink. Not indicated for women who may want to become pregnant in the future. Myomectomy: There are multiple techniques for this surgery, which removes the fibroids. It is often the chosen treatment for women who want to have children, because it usually can preserve fertility. Unfortunately more fibroids can develop after a myomectomy. • Hysterectomy: This invasive surgery may be an option if medicines do not work and other surgeries and procedures are not an option. If you are presenting these symptoms or have fibroids, you can visit us to discuss in more detail your personal needs.

TURN BACK THE CLOCK IN MINUTES! “OFTEN A 1 TREATMENT WOW” ….THE DEEP, FRACTIONAL CO2 MICRO-ABLATIVE LASER The newest advances in Laser Technology have revolutionized “Gold Standard” CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing!! With another new technology Upgrade, we now offer “Multi-Pulse” a Deep CO2 Microablative laser that can safely and precisely remove outer layers of damaged skin and penetrate via millions of microthermal zones to reveal the underlying skin and create brand new skin which is softer, smoother and often dramatically, younger looking. It also stimulates the regeneration of healthy skin underneath (called “Laser Skin Renewal”), for a dramatically youthful and beautiful appearance! This superlative skin resurfacing – rejuvenation procedure will reverse years of sun damage, wrinkles, scars and many other skin imperfections in just minutes. When compared to other forms of laser treatment, the new “Deep” CO2 micro ablative is the new “Gold Standard” for rapid and optimal enhancement in as littleas 1 treatment! Our patients, ranging in age from 13 to 81 say that “The micro ablation removes sun damaged skin and makes it fresher looking; the second part called “bulk heating” improves collagen and elastic fibers deep down that improve deep to moderate wrinkles”. It’s also great for removing all types of scars, safe anywhere on the face, body or hands and we are even using it on stretch marks. By fractioning the laser beam into microscopic beams, a specific portion of the skin is left unharmed, which is more conducive to healing. This fractional method enables cells

to begin healing within 24 hours and the comfortable downtime can be adjusted to fit your busy schedule for 3 to 7 days – versus two months with the original CO2 laser. “The new “Non-Surgical Laser Facelift or Eye Lift” can take years off a person’s appearance and give them better looking skin than someone many years younger,” noted Dr. Aguilera. Our other popular cosmetic procedures include Botox, Dysport and Dermal fillers to replenish the volume of fat loss and bone loss on the face. Fillers take care of the volume and folds while the laser takes care of the skin’s texture, tone and elasticity. ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS OFFER STRATEGIES TO AVOID FED-INFLATED BOND BUBBLE EMERALD ASSET ADVISORS, LLC

Allan Budelman, Managing Partner

2843 Executive Park Drive Weston, FL 33331 954.370.8999 www.EmeraldAssetAdvisors.com Over the past several years, investors have shifted hundreds of billions of dollars out of stocks and into investment grade corporate bonds and U.S. Treasuries. To date, this strategy has delivered solid results for many investors, as bond prices have generally continued to rally while bond yields have continued to fall. In fact, a closer look reveals that bonds have enjoyed a remarkable run over the past 30 years. During this period, the yield on 10-year Treasuries fell from an all-time high of 15.84% in 1981 to a recent low of 1.49% this past summer. Of course, this rally has been aided in recent years by an unprecedented amount of quantitative easing by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Several months ago, the FOMC announced yet another round of bond-buying in an effort to drive longterm interest rates lower and (hopefully) stimulate economic and employment growth. ARE INVESTORS IGNORING THE WARNING SIGNS? As investors continue to pile into bonds, it seems that few have considered what may happen if and when interest rates begin to rise. Given

96

the odds that interest rates could rise dramatically from their historic lows over the next few years, we believe the bull market in bonds has created a false sense of security and complacency among some investors. Many investors have little to no experience investing in a rising interest rate environment and have not considered what will happen when the 30-year bull market for bonds ends. When interest rates do start rising again, investors with large exposure to long-term investment grade bonds could be in for a world of hurt. Consider what happened during a previous period of rising interest rates. In 1994, the FOMC increased the fed funds rate from 3.0% early in the year to 5.5% in November. Over that period, the 30-year U.S. Treasury bond yield jumped more than 150 basis points to nearly 8%, and in turn caused many bond investors to suffer losses of 20% or more. Most investors either have forgotten the lessons of the past, have chosen to ignore them, or are simply unaware of them. This may partially explain why nearly $938 billion has shifted into bond funds since January 2009, while stock funds have seen net outflows of $216 billion. History has shown that periods of negative “real” yields (a loss of purchasing power) have served as a harbinger to something worse – namely a challenging performance environment characterized by actual investment losses. When examining the rolling 12-month performance for the 10year Treasury from January 1967 to July 2012, real yields were negative

FEBRUARY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

11.80% of the time. In these instances, the average total return was -4.04%. We believe many investors will simply sell at a loss and pile back into stocks, continuing the sell-low/buy-high cycle.

ALTERNATIVES OFFER A DIFFERENT PATH Rather than swinging like a pendulum between stocks and bonds or employing a traditional 60/40 asset allocation, we believe investors should consider allocating a portion of their portfolio to liquid alternative investments that may deliver performance with low correlation to stocks and bonds. These strategies have the potential to reduce portfolio volatility, deliver absolute returns in good times and bad, and bridge that special gap between traditional stock/bond portfolios. We believe that individual investors need to prepare for the possibility of higher interest rates and higher inflation as a result of unprecedented global central bank intervention. WEIGHT-LOSS RESISTANCE Jessica had a purpose for her consultation with me. “New year, same old resolution – get the weight off.” Tired of being overweight, she wanted to fix her metabolism once and for all and to be thin. “So what have you tried in the past,” I inquired. “Dr. Woliner, what haven’t I tried you mean.” Jessica continued, “I fall for whatever quick weight loss scheme that comes around [1]. You know, ’30 lbs, 30 days, $30’.” “How’d that work for you?” “Well, it wasn’t $30. Somehow they got me to sign a contract for over $2,000. And you know, I would have gladly paid that if I only got results.” “I can assure you that I will be honest and upfront with you. A patient has to have faith in her doctor.” “That was probably my problem. I never really saw a doctor. Even at the so-called medical clinics, the doctor was only there for 3 hours a week and the girl that works up at the front desk was the one doing the consultations, dispensing me my HCG, and selling me other pills.” “The Sun-Sentinel ran an expose on HCG diet clinics showing how

they offered more hype than help [2]. On these crash diets, you might lose some weight, but you’re also likely lose your hair, develop life-threatening heart arrhythmias, and gain the weight back [3].” “I’m done with fad diets and clinics that focus only on weightloss. I need a doctor to look at all of me, and find out why I have a weight problem to begin with.” “I’m not just a doctor who could prescribe appetite suppressants; I’m a board-certified family medicine physician with a degree in Nutrition from Cornell. I prefer to look at the causes of weight gain, and treat them instead.” I proceeded with my 80-minute new patient exam, “You’re looking rundown. Thinning hair, fatigue and muscle spasms. You know, constant dieting can cause CENTRAL HYPOTHYROIDISM, low iron, and electrolyte imbalances. We should check for all those. “Since you’re fasting today, we can do a KORR INDIRECT CALORIMETRY test to measure your metabolism [4].” Jessica’s metabolism measured at “minus 18% less than normal” and blood tests confirmed that her thyroid had shut down (normal TSH, but other thyroid tests abnormal)

DR. KENNETH WOLINER Board Certified Family Physician 9325 Glades Road, Suite 104 Boca Raton, FL 33434 561-314-0950 holisticfamilymed.com

[5]. “Your low magnesium can cause those muscle spasms, and even though you’re not anemic, your iron isn’t adequate to grow hair or keep your energy levels up [6].” “Is there a way I can jumpstart things?” “I won’t make the false promise of a pound a day, but you’ll see results pretty quickly. My diet suggestions will make it easier to get adequate protein in each day, causing your metabolism to recover, but until that happens; we’ll need to prescribe T3-based thyroid medication. We could also do iron injections to give your hair raw materials to grow again [7].” 3 months and 20 pounds lighter, Jessica was very upbeat. “The way I’m going, this is one New Year’s Resolution that will be easy to keep.”

The reality is that most of their ideas won’t work, at least not for your business. So, it’s time to get smart about marketing. Stop wasting your money on plans that don’t fit your business or your clients. And don’t buy into a marketing idea just because you’re told all your competitors are doing it or it’s the next big trend. Instead, let’s focus on what’s real:

It could be where they live, what they do for a living, or how they like to spend their free time and discretionary income. HCG: THE RIGHT WAY TO LOSE BODY FAT I went to a very fancy event and was privileged to sit beside and a very accomplished woman in her early 40s. She was very attractive and had her refreshingly doting husband beside her. Her company and wealth had grown substantially in the last 5 years. Yet in a very candid conversation I asked her, for a woman who seems to have everything, what one wish she would want granted. She said she’s had the same New Year’s Resolution the last 10 years: to have her lean body back. With a smile of satisfaction, I told her how I help my clients and that her wish can be granted! How could I be so confident? I have helped grant the same wish to thousands of my clients just like her. The main ingredient in our success formula is the controversial but naturally produced protein hormone hCG. First, let me state that I am not a believer in fad diets, appetite suppressant even if prescribed by a doctor and dietitians who are using a wrong basis for nutrition or diet pills. I believe that sound nutrition and a healthy lifestyle are essential to maintain proper health and body fat. However, getting to the correct body fat is another story. I am no medical doctor, but base my program on the findings of a noted British medical doctor Dr. Simeons.

Dr. Simeons documented through his tests that hCG is necessary to address the root cause of high body fat. It is simply a tool that is used to fix a problem. NOT something you live on. hCG is able to release stored fat while protecting against muscle loss which happens to many dieters restricting their calorie intake. Also, hGC is necessary to reset the hypothalamus gland which regulates body fat and where it is stored on your body. There are certainly precautions to take with any hCG program: • Before beginning a program, you to need to be cleared by a medical doctor to ensure that your thyroid is functioning correctly. If this gland is out of balance you will regain weight. • Make sure the hCG is prescribed by a medical doctor and is an injectable. • You need to be on other cleanses. • Have your program supervised by a proper coach who is experienced with hCG as well as proper nutrition and can help you to come off hCG correctly.

• Living a healthy lifestyle is needed to accompany the program. So with that said, I’m grateful to Dr. Simeons for his research as it has helped me achieve and maintain my body as well as the many who I have coached to better health. So there is hope! ining on French food in a café that offers an intimate ambiance may be the best way to begin– or reawaken– your love of food. What could be more romantic than a café adorned with sparkling lights, candles, and cabaret piano music playing in the background? The French are in love with history, culture, art, wine – and this is translated into every taste of food that is offered during your dining experience. An intimate evening is guaranteed when you stroll into Café de Paris. Owner Louis Flematti acquired the café in 1962, and much of his success over the last 50 years is due to a consistent presentation of both food and service. Chef Carlo, Pastry Chef Jean Claude, and Patricia the piano player are part of the longterm familiarity that keeps regulars returning. A beautiful Bougainvillea tree, given as a gift to Louis by a local patron who has since passed away, remains at the entrance of the restaurant. French food is for sharing. It is sensual. And sharing over candlelight

makes this dining experience very Parisian. Begin with Coquille St. Jacques, which is classically served in a scallop shell. This creamy dish of scallops, shrimps, and mushrooms is baked to crusty perfection. The Escargot Bourguignon, dripping in butter and garlic, will inspire bread-dipping. And if you love Duck Foiegrass and toasted Brioche, your taste buds will dance with delight over this rich, buttery, and delicate appetizer served with fresh cranberries. What’s better than appetizers that leave you lusting for more? Entrees that are perfect proportions wrapped with love and accompanied by wine offerings chosen by Louis himself. Consider the Beef Wellington. The filet mignon is wrapped in a firm, flaky crust accompanied by bordelaise sauce, vegetables, and a potato au gratin. Veal Oscar rivaled the beef. Topped with crabmeat, the plate was delicately complemented with asparagus, mushroom risotto, and a dab of hollandaise sauce. One should also consider the Chicken Crepe Princesse. This truly

Sauté shrimp in light butter, remove from the pan. Discard the butter, sauté carrots, mushrooms, garlic and shallots until soft, add salt and pepper to taste. SAUCE BEURRE BLANC 1 Cup White Wine 1/2 Cup White Vinegar 1 Cup Heavy Cream 1/2 LB Soft Butter Juice of 1/2 lemon Reduce white wine and vinegar by half, add heavy cream, and reduce by half again. Add soft butter with a whisk, add lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste. Combine vegetable and beurre blanc together. Place rice pilaf on center of plates, arrange 4 shrimp around, scoop beurre blanc and vegetable onto the shrimp and sprinkle chopped parsley on top.

traditional crepe is filled with chicken and mushrooms and is touched with a light velouté sauce. The sauce and term velouté is from the French adjectival form of velour, meaning velvet and is exquis! The Dover Sole also deserves mention and is light, flavorful, and touched with crumbs that dust the plate. A moment is taken between tastings to appreciate the romantic view both inside and outside leading to the street of Las Olas. The café offers several choices for seating to enhance your dining experience. The sidewalk area has cozy bistro style tables that are lit under an expansive awning, and inside, there are several intimate alcoves and four separate dining rooms. A full bar, a spiral staircase, and a grand piano are all part of the main dining rooms character that simply adds to this lovely French bistro. Dessert is absolutely for lovers at Café de Paris. I devoured the fruit tart filled with pastry cream and topped with fresh fruits with little option for sharing. The cheesecake with raspberry sauce was luscious, and the Key Lime pie was scrumptious! There are wonderful desserts offered for two, which include Baked Alaska, Cherries Jubilee, Banana Foster and

Crepes Suzette. Complete your meal with a cappuccino or one of the many exotic coffees offered. While you may not have had an aperitif such as a Pernod or Campari perhaps a digestif, an after-dinner drink, is your fancy. A taste of Grappa or Drambuie will warm you and prepare you for a lovely after dinner walk on the boulevard. Café de Paris has live entertainment seven nights a week. Early dinner

specials are served from 5 to 6 p.m., and the café is open for holidays as well. Visit www.cafedeparislasolas. com or for reservations or special events, call (954) 467-2900 or e-mail lecafedeparis@bellsouth.net. Café de Paris 715 Las Olas Boulevard, Ft Lauderdale Florida, 33301 Tel: 954 467 2900

and another thing

Selling The Dream Being specific can be anticlimactic BY BRUCE TURKEL

My father was an innovative and LEONARD TURKEL | 1930-2011 very successful real estate developer. The Miami Herald called him “The Father of Florida Condominiums” because he built the first residential condo in the United States – and the first office condo in the world. As a kid, I used to walk from my elementary school to his construction projects. Sometimes my dad would walk me through the job site and show me where the elevators were going, how the stairs would be MIAMI NEWS FILE, 1965 installed, and where the apartments BEACH RESIDENT: A 1965 story and photo in the Miami News were. crowned Leonard Turkel the father of Florida Condominiums.’ He’d also tell me about the construction business: How you Regardless of who the customer was and what they made your money not when you sold your building but when you bought the property.... wanted, it was always easier to “sell the dream.” How the key to building a great building profitably Because the reality never quite measured up to was compromising on everything except design their fantasies. Now think about your brand strategy. Are and architecture.... And why he always wanted to sell his condo apartments as early as possible in the you promoting the intellectual, metrics-based advantages of your brand? Or have you figured out project’s lifespan. Even as a kid, I thought I understood the reason how to sell the dream? Want some examples to figure out where you for selling the project early was to get as much money as you could as quickly as possible. But my stand?
