MOVING FORWARD Last month, I strolled into a mixer hosted by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance. It was one of the Alliance’s “Connect” events, held on the beautiful patio at Gallery One, the all-suite Doubletree hotel along the Intracoastal. The event focused on artwork, with artists actually painting while Broward business’s elite mingled and chatted about business, family and the Miami Heat. And while I met executives ranging from manufacturing to home entertainment systems, I noticed something fascinating… The conversation usually turned to the law at some point. Certainly there were different aspects of law. One person was chatting with me about an employee who left to work for his competitor. While his employee had signed a non-compete agreement for two years, he struggled with whether or not he should take her to court. Another person was explaining to me how he shared a new internet concept with a friend – and then the friend beat him to market. The law has always fascinated me. During my days as Publisher of the South Florida Business Journal, I heard the most fantastic stories from my friends who were lawyers. Sadly, the newspaper industry is declining. At the same time, local, targeted magazines are thriving. According to recent third party research, Lifestyle Magazines now enjoys almost 200,000 readers in Broward County alone. Guess what – 70 percent of these readers are in top management. Lifestyle’s mission is to tell the stories that we all talk about while dining with close friends. What do we talk about? Money issues, business, family, vacations, our favorite restaurants and our kids. And that’s what we write about in the pages of our publications. Another important goal at Lifestyle is to connect the community we love together. That’s one of the reasons why Lifestyle Media Group has created the Leaders in Law Awards. This fall, we’re going to honor the best South Florida lawyers in more than a dozen categories, both

at a ceremony at Nova Southeastern University and within the pages of our magazines. It’s our opportunity to applaud the best lawyers in categories ranging from insurance to entertainment, corporate to government, taxes to real estate. We’ll also honor the law firms who do the most for the community. For more details, visit lmgfl.com/ awards or email our chief marketing officer Dawn Rahicki at dawn@ lifestylemagazinegroup.com. The Leaders in Law Awards are just one of the many exciting events we have planned for later this year and beyond. We’ve decided, as a company, that we need to do more than just cover the county and South Florida. We need to be a part of it. Last month we began our CEO Connect concept at Grill 401. This program features a live one on one interview with our area’s most fascinating people. Of course there was great food and drinks – and great conversations. I’d like to give a special thank you to noted developer Terry Stiles for being my first interview. We spanned Terry’s life and found out how he built Stiles into one of the largest real estate companies in the nation. Future events will also feature live

interviews with some of the most interesting and influential movers and shakers of our community. On the editorial front, we’re expanding our travel and food sections, adding a real estate section, and diving deeper into the business trends that are influencing – or about to influence – South Florida. And this summer, inspired by the Alliance’s Connect event at Gallery One, we’re going to feature the best artists in Broward County – and show you how businesses are embracing art not only for its aesthetic value, but for its investment value and how that affects their bottom lines. In this issue, I hope you’ll peruse our cover story, which combines Mother’s Day with National Pet Month and features wonder women who raise children and save pets. And for lighter fare, did you know Broward County is home to a halfdozen breweries – one of them awardwinning. We welcome you to take the long walk with us as we embrace and honor our community together.t.

Quick on the draw MIAMI FASHION STYLIST RACHAEL RUSSELL AT PEEL IT OFF TO GIVE IT BACK ON LAS OLAS

The clothes off your back The average U.S. household discards around 700 pieces of clothing and textiles annually, so there’s now a nationwide clothing movement called PEEL IT OFF TO GIVE BACK, which collects “gently worn” clothing for those in need. The program made a stop at Las Olas Fine Arts on March 29, and more than 100 people packed the gallery for a “Sip & Swap” clothing donation event – which are also happening in Dallas and Chicago. Attendees donated their gently worn clothing and swapped it for something “new to you,” all while enjoying wines from event co-sponsor The Naked Grape, a winery offering eight varietals. All the remaining clothes were donated to Clothes4Souls, a global anti-poverty nonprofit organization. For details, visit clothes4souls.org.

DANA MARKHAM TALKS TO PINECREST FIFTH-GRADERS

100 women who rock What’s Pine Crest President Dana Markham discussing with these fifth-graders? “The effects of spices and scents” at the annual Kids’ Inquiry Conference, an interactive lower school science symposium that took place in March. “I am so proud of you all, with not only the findings you have presented so well, but with the way you have learned to collaborate, compromise, and solve problems during your projects,” Markham told the students, who attend the award-winning private school in Fort Lauderdale.

Those students can also be proud of Markham – she’s a nominee for the fifth annual 100 Outstanding Women of Broward County, hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. The big gala is May 9 at the Signature Grand, and Markham joins other nominees who include business owners, judges, and doctors. For details on attending the event, email Danielle Cox at dcox@bgcbc.org or call her at (954) 563-2822. 100outstandingwomen.com

The students ran through six football drills and cheerleader routines. JTC stresses a healthy lifestyle through education, physical fitness and making positive choices. “I think it brings out school spirit, unifies the classes and it gets the kids in a good mood,” Assistant Principal Larry Barretto said. “The message is also an excellent tie-in, and I think it’s important for the kids to realize there’s more to it than just having fun.” For more information on the Miami Dolphins Youth Football Clinic, Youth Football Camps, or school visits, email youthprograms@dolphins.com.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STROKE Stroke is the third leading cause of death following heart disease and cancer. Every year, more than 795,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurrent stroke episode – that means that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Americans will pay close to $70 billion in stroke-related medical costs in this year alone. Q: What is a stroke? A: A stroke or “brain attack” is damage to the brain when blood supply to part of the brain is reduced or completely stopped. Brain cells deprived of blood die and can no longer function because they stop getting oxygen and nutrients they need to function.

Q: What stroke treatments are available at Cleveland Clinic Florida? A: Physical and neurological exams are performed immediately to determine brain damage Efrain Salgado, MD and the cause of stroke. Cleveland Clinic Florida, Neurologist The physician may also have a CT scan of the brain done, to further investigate the type of stroke. If a blood clot is the cause of stroke, as it most often is, a clot busting medication called Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) can be used for treatment, but must be administered within 4 1/2 hours of the onset of symptoms. If you or someone with you has one or more of the above symptoms of stroke, don’t delay, call 9-1-1 immediately.

To schedule a consultation, please call 800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org.

Q: What are signs or symptoms of a stroke? A: Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or legs; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination and sudden, severe headaches with no known cause. Cleveland Clinic Florida

Q: What You Can Do To Prevent a stroke? A: A healthier lifestyle plays a big part in decreasing the chance of disability and death from stroke: stop or don’t smoke; exercise regularly; control high blood pressure; maintain ideal body weight; limit alcohol intake; control cholesterol; improve eating habits; take medication as directed; control diabetes and regular check-ups.

Heard of Sierra Nevada? Sam Adams? Forget about those craft-beers-turned-nationwidephenoms – they’ve been beat out by a Broward brewery. On most mornings, Matt Cox is alone at the Big Bear Brewing Company in Coral Springs, cleaning his brew kettle. He actually crawls inside the 10-foot vessel and hand-scrubs the surfaces. “Everything in good brewing practices starts with clean equipment,” says Cox, brewmaster of the 15-year-old microbrewery on a stretch of University Drive between a SunTrust bank and a Japanese restaurant. “Bacterial contamination is our biggest enemy in brewing. When a beer goes into any vessel or container, it needs to be clean and sanitized – from the biggest tank, to the smallest bottle.” Cox’s cleanliness obsession has its rewards. Last September, Big Bear’s Polar Light took a gold medal at the United States Open Beer Championship in Atlanta, a national contest featuring more than 1,650 American brews in 65 categories. And Big Bear’s Paw Print IPA was declared Grand Champion IPA at the United States Beer Tasting Championship in Manchester, New Hampshire, just last September.

If you’ve ever bought a craft beer, you know it’s pricier than your average Budweiser. Here’s why: it’s hard work. Unlike other state-of-the-art modern breweries, Big Bear has no computer touch screens to regulate the water temperature or mix the malt. “All the labor during the brewing process is done by hand,” Cox says. “There are no motors to mix the mash, for instance. The dry weight of the mash can be up to 1,000 pounds, which I then combine with water and mix with a hand paddle. The mixture becomes much heavier as it blends. All the malt has to then be removed manually when the process is finished.” One small mistake in the milling process, water purification, or in the accuracy of time and temperature could ruin a whole batch – equal to 20 kegs of beer. Cox has to run the different varieties of malt through a mill to gently crush it. The malt is then measured to the thousandth of an inch to create the desired flavor and body of the brew. The water Cox uses to mix with the malt goes through a water-purification process that strips contaminants out of the Broward tap water. He then rebuilds the water using calcium and magnesium – each brew has its own specific type of water. After 20 hours of labor, Cox has his 20 kegs’ worth of beer – but he doesn’t keep them in kegs. Instead, he stores the liquid in a half-dozen 8-foot-tall “serving vessels.” And directly from there is where customers at the Big Bear Brewery taste their purchases. Even the tubes the beer travels through are handpicked by Cox. They measure a quarter-inch in diameter compared to the normal half- to three-eighths inches, which leaves less beer sitting in the tubes when they are not in use – because beer sitting in the lines usually becomes stale. The tubes are also made of a nonporous material so they won’t collect dirt or bacteria, which could alter the taste of the beer. Cost: 45 cents a foot compared to 20 cents a foot. “Our process makes a difference when you compare taste and quality to the supermarket-type beers that people buy or drink at bars,” Cox says. “We keep the beer in a natural and pure state. We don’t pasteurize, use any chemical shelf-life extenders or flavor enhancers. Some beers we lightly filter, some are left completely unfiltered.” If this intrigues your taste buds, there’s only one problem: you can’t buy Big Bear beer anywhere but in Coral Springs. “Our beers are only sold on premise, so we can ensure they are always kept at optimal temperatures,” Cox says. “They also sell very fast, so we don’t have to worry about them getting old or losing flavor. That separates us and some other local brew pubs from all other beer products.”

• Holy Mackerel Panic Attack – 10 percent As Holy Mackerel brewmaster Bobby G. puts it: “Some craft beer consumers drink less beer because of alcohol content, thus cutting down on calories and cash spent.”

The Mack House Holy Mackerel Nano Brewery A hip hangout for students from nearby FAU and Lynn University, featuring live music, the aroma of shisha (flavored tobacco), and a tapas-like menu. Brewmaster Kevin Abbott usually offers five main ales, with prices in the $6 range. They include: Maple Bacon Coffee Porter – Just like the name says, it’s brewed with maple syrup, smoked malt (to suggest bacon), and coffee. Brown to black in color and medium bodied. No Crusts – A peanut-butter-and-jelly brown ale brewed with real peanuts and assorted fruits. Hop Gun IPA – In a sea of overly bitter IPAs, Abbott went for balance. Amber colored and medium bodied, Hop Gun has a strong malt flavor with hints of caramel and honey. Floridian Hefeweizen – Unfiltered German style wheat beer with a pale golden color. Aromas of banana and clove with light citrus fruit, light to medium bodied with similar flavors, prickly carbonation and clean finish. A laid-back establishment run by brewmaster Bobby G, who loves to add unconventional ingredients like chili peppers, pecans, and coffee. The results are rich and explosive but still well-balanced. Brews, also in the $6 range, include: Panic Attack – Canadian malt adds richness and sweetness, while spices such as fennel seed and ginger layer on the flavor. A strong ale – hence the name. Mack in Black – Belgian yeast and the addition of pomegranate juice in the fermentation makes this concoction a bit lighter than Panic Attack and gives it a thinner body. It has notes of chocolate and coffee. Special Golden Ale – Belgian-style brew, unfiltered with a hint of ginger, fennel, and slight honey sweetness. Dry and refreshing with fruity aromas. Although not a brew pub, brewmaster Adam Fine creates a local range of flavorful beers that reminds him of what being a local is all about – spending time with friends and enjoying the weather year round. His brews include: Native Lager – Brewed with the finest German malts, hops, and a classic German yeast strain that produces an exceptionally smooth tasting golden lager, this is perfect for hot summer days. The Eleven Brown Ale – Hints of caramel and roasted nuts compliment a slight hop bitterness, which balances the sweetness and ends with a nice clean finish. Thunderhead Red – A classic American amber ale that balances the smooth caramel flavor of Maris Otter malt with a light hop bitterness and aroma. Adam’s brews can be found at many local establishments such as the Poorhouse, The Downtowner and selected Whole Foods, Publix, and Total Wine stores. www.nativebrewingco.com.

BRENDA ROSEN ‘Anything but nice’: Brenda Rosen, Weston Brenda Rosen had always been a cat person. Then she saw an ad for a small tan poodle named Polo. She saw a contact number for someone named Ana. She called and reached an animal shelter named Paws 2 Care Coalition in Hollywood, and its director Ana Bueno. Soon after, the kindergarten teacher adopted Polo and brought him home to her husband and two kids. About a month later, she had to call Ana again – the dog wouldn’t go near her husband, Greg, and remained hesitant around most adults. “I remember hyperventilating in the car,” Rosen says. “I loved this dog, but I had to give it back because of what someone did to him and what he went through. And I was so angry about it. But I vowed from that time that I’d do whatever I could to help these dogs.” So she did. Every Thursday, Rosen – who teaches at Eagle Point Elementary in Weston – walks, bathes, and plays with dogs at Paws 2 Care Coalition. “She has a very good heart,” Bueno says. “She’s a great person.” Rosen’s home now has two dogs, both adopted from Paws 2 Care. Rocky is a tan pitbull mix, and

46

Archie is a tan dachshund chihuahua. She also has three cats, all from the Broward Humane Society. Moo Moo is black and white with green eyes, Zachary “looks like a lion,” and Romeo is also black and white. The patio area of Rosen’s backyards is set up specifically for her house cats and two strays that wander nearby almost every day, looking for food. There are wooden scratch posts, little beds, and bowls with food for the felines. “It’s not anything nice,” Rosen jokes. “It looks like I shouldn’t be in Weston.” Even still, Rosen’s family supports it. She has a 13-year-old daughter named Julia in seventh grade at Tequesta Trace Middle School, and an 8-year-old son named Douglas in second grade at her own school, Eagle Point Elementary. The family has no big plans for Mother’s Day – at least none that Rosen knows about – but that’s fine for the animal lover. “It’s very simplistic for us,” Rosen says. “I don’t do materialistic things. My stuff is my cats and dogs, that’s where I spend my money. To me, a day at the beach, a day with family, a day at the dog park, that’s good for me.”

MAY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

PAWS 2 CARE COALITION 6219 Johnson St., Hollywood paws2carecoalition.org Paws 2 Care Coalition opened in August 2011 after Ana Bueno decided rescuing seven dogs at a time on her own wasn’t enough. Now, with a center in Hollywood, Bueno can house nearly 30 dogs, ready for adoption. “Having a physical location is awesome,” she says. “We’ve tripled our capacity to help.” And although she has almost 30 dogs roaming the facility and 11 other dogs being held by families and waiting for space at the shelter, Bueno objects to it being called a shelter. “Well, really, our shelter is a shelter because it falls under that category,” she says. “But it’s nothing like a shelter. Our dogs have couches, they watch TV, we have a fenced-in yard – we try very hard to make it a home setting.” She’s not kidding. “People tell me they want to volunteer, but they don’t because they get sad seeing the animals. I tell them, ‘Not here!’ The animals sit and watch Animal Planet. We want to make them feel at home.” Bueno has kept certain dogs there for over a year – however long it takes for an adoption to take place. “We wait for the right family to come along,” she says. “And it usually happens.”

Headmaster Spotlight University School

Headmaster Dr. Jerome S. Chermak Educational Visionary Takes School Into Future Jerome S. Chermak, Ed.D., is an education leader for the 21st century. As the headmaster of University School of Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Chermak’s philosophy is very much in line with the private, pre-k through 12 college preparatory school’s founding principles created 42 years ago, yet his is a vision for today. “University School is an environment where students receive the knowledge, skills, and habits that are required for them to be successful, but it is also a place where we are developing global leaders who have a sense of responsibility. We want our students to be well-prepared academically, but we also want our students to be of good character,” said Chermak. Having the University School located on the main campus of Nova Southeastern University also allows students unprecedented access to a university environment, which Chermak believes gives students a leg up as they prepare for post-secondary school life.

As the school’s headmaster since 1999, the educator also brings a deeper understanding to the inner workings of University School on many levels. “When I arrived in Florida 31 years ago, I had two goals: to find a position in education and to also find schooling for my children. I looked at University School for my two children and I didn’t have to search any further.” Chermak said that because he and his wife, Sheila, were University School parents for 18 years, he brings a perspective which allows him to look at issues and concerns from many different sides. As an educator, too, he has held various positions at the school as social studies chairman, as teacher in the middle and upper schools, as well as the director of the lower and middle schools. Before his appointment as headmaster, he was the associate headmaster for 10 years. As headmaster for the past 14 years, Chermak has been lauded for his achievements as a leader and for his innovative developments of exemplary educational opportunities. Visit the 28-acre “campus-within-a-campus” at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, and his vision is evident. Since 2005, and in collaboration with NSU, the headmaster instituted the largest expansion project in the school’s four decade history — a multi-year $100 million investment that has created a school that reflects University School’s past, present, and most importantly, its future. “We’ve developed an excellent facility, which not only gives students and faculty state-of-the-art equipment in environmentally friendly buildings in a beautiful setting, but it also establishes a sense of place. This is an atmosphere that encourages students and faculty to thrive during and after school in a safe environment on the NSU campus,” said Chermak. Two media centers are available for students in the Middle and Upper schools. There is also a Mac Media Laboratory, where students interact with software that enhances the classroom experience, and is housed inside the 137,000 square-foot, 750-seat Epstein Center for the Arts. Students also have access to wet and dry art studios, and a professional dance studio. The school’s athletic program has grown under Chermak’s leadership as well, including the addition of football, lacrosse and rowing teams. The Suns Varsity Football Team won its division to become the 2012 State of Florida 3A Champions. Academic and arts programs are also consistently recognized for high achievement.

University School’s speech and debate team won its third consecutive state title in 2013, while four of the school’s visual artists were recognized nationally in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Chermak is also proud of his faculty with more than 70 percent of the school’s 181 faculty members holding advanced degrees. “We have leading educators who each day promote all of our students’ abilities to learn, grow and succeed academically, socially and personally.”

“Additionally, University School’s early childhood programs set a foundation for success and a love for learning in a childcentered environment.” Additionally, University School’s early childhood programs set a foundation for success and a love for learning in a childcentered environment. Active learning, personalized instruction, and skilled early childhood teachers who use a combination of developmental theories to design a unique learning program for each child are the hallmarks of University School’s early childhood programs and set it apart from other PreK facilities. Furthermore, in his role as headmaster of University School, Chermak serves as a dean at the university level; a distinction, which he said, allows for the school to be on par with the other schools and colleges at NSU. “We have many collaborative programs with these centers that benefit our students and allow for unparalleled student research opportunities. Because of these educational, fulfilling and unique opportunities, by the time many of our students graduate, they have been fully immersed in a higher educational atmosphere.” While there are many resources available to students who attend University School, Chermak believes that its location on the campus and its collaboration with NSU, the eighth-largest not-for-profit private university in the nation, is a unique advantage. “The fact that we are an integral part of Nova Southeastern University, an outstanding research university that continues to position itself as a premier institution of higher learning, is an affiliation that cannot be underestimated.”

Footy’s Wing Ding Golf Classic For the 14th consecutive year, South Florida’s radio legend “Footy” will take to the golf course along with a couple of hundred friends and supporters of a charity that is close to his heart – Here’s Help Inc. This year’s Wing Ding Golf Classic, hosted by Badia Spices, takes place on Friday, May 3 at the Pembroke Pines Golf & Racquet Club, considered to be one of Broward County’s premiere private golf clubs. The club features an exceptional 18 hole, par-72 golf course. Registration and lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. with the shot-gun start at 1:00 p.m. “We couldn’t have the terrific success we have enjoyed over the years without our many friends who take time out of their busy schedule to help us raise money and awareness for Here’s Help, the team-driven drug treatment agency for people ages 13 years and older,” Footy explained. “Add to that the corporate sponsorships and underwriting, we have a winning combination that is making a positive difference in the lives of some very important young people in our community.” At the top of the list of sponsors are Publix Super Markets, Greenspoon Marder P.A., Levinson Jewelers, BB&T, Rick Case Automotive Group, and Comcast. Teams of four or individual players are welcome, with a registration fee of $225.00 per player. The registration fee includes greens fees and cart, range balls during practice, lunch sponsored by El Pimiento and all tournament amenities and competitions, dinner, and gifts. Footy is known for his deeply rooted commitment to community service and has been a presence on South Florida radio for over 35 years. He was a cohost on a locally produced South Florida morning show from 1974 to 2006, thus holding the record of longest Top 40 CHR DJ in North America.

Pembroke Pines Golf & Racquet Club challenges the accomplished player, yet does not discourage the beginner. It is a course that is fun and exciting to play, day after day. The course is kept in excellent condition and the greens are built to USGA specifications. Course facilities include a driving range, practice putting green, and practice pitch and chipping green. 100 Years of Fighting Cancer One hundred years ago, the American Cancer Society and the American people started the fight of a lifetime. One hundred years ago, the word “cancer” was not spoken, and almost everyone who was diagnosed with cancer died. After all the research and discoveries and new treatments, the survival rates have changed for the better. Today, the goal is to change the statistics from two out of every three people surviving cancer for at least five years to three out of three surviving…period! The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots organization with more than three million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday for every person battling cancer in every community. To date, there has been a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. On Saturday, May 11, the American Cancer Society invites you to become a part of the solution by supporting the American Cancer Society’s 100th Birthday Ball honoring AutoNation Chairman and CEO Mike Jackson, cancer survivor Lynne Curry, and hear a special testimonial from a newly engaged 22-year-old who has been battling brain cancer since he was three years old. The event is being held at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 with entertainment by The Steve Chase Band and an exciting silent auction that includes vacation trips, jewelry, spa days, and more! The Honorary Chairs of the 100th Birthday Ball are Wayne and Marti Huizenga. The co-chairs are two entrepreneurs: Keith Koenig, co-founder along with his brother Kevin, of City Furniture; and Terry

Stiles, president and CEO of Stiles, Inc. “The American Cancer Society’s 100th Birthday is an opportunity to join in the battle to end cancer…for your health, your family’s health, and the health of future generations,” said Keith Koenig. Terry Stiles added, “It’s a celebration of 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays and hope.” Nationally, the American Cancer Society’s goal is to raise $100 million dollars to do more research, to conduct more tests and surveys, and, in the end, to save more lives. Help the American Cancer Society finish the fight – go to FinishtheFight.org, like them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter (@AmericanCancer). Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Count-Down To Man & Woman of the Year The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. That’s probably one of the reasons that the annual Man and Woman of the Year event is so enthusiastically supported by everyone that volunteers to help in a variety of ways. A case in point are the two co-chairs, Ana Vento, president of events of Vento Designs, and Matthew F. Sacco, vice president, Communications & Public Affairs, Sunrise Sports & Entertainment and the Florida Panthers Hockey Club. Committed to philanthropy, Ana believes that when you give, you will always receive. She was the 2011 Woman of the Year. Matthew, named the 2012 Man of the Year, has been involved with LLS for the past three years, originally as part of Panthers record-breaking 2010 and 2011 Light the Night Campaigns. The only people that work harder, perhaps, are those who are selected to campaign for ten weeks for the Man and Woman of the Year. Candidates run in honor of the Boy and Girl of the Year, who are local blood cancer patient survivors and sources of inspiration to others. They are judged solely on the money they raise – every dollar raised counts as one vote! The 17 candidates agree to utilize their leadership abilities and resources to conduct their own fundraising campaigns. The male candidates are Ron Brandenburg, Broward Health Medical Center; Jonathan Brownfield, On the Ball Marketing; John DeShields,

The Gilded Age of Small Business BY BRANDON BALLENGER

Gilda Batista and her husband Gilbert have kept a journal of crazy business ideas since she was 16. Now 38, the Weston resident is happily trying some of them. Batista says her time teaching – first and second grade and at Palm Beach State College – honed her ability to multitask and solve problems. She became a stay-athome “mompreneur” after having her daughter Mia in 2004. “We have a lot of time when the kids are at school, between laundry and dinner and keeping the house, and we fill that void doing something to help with the finances,” Batista says. “There’s a lot of us.” Her current project is Hotel Inspector, a pocket UV flashlight designed for travel use – so you can scope out your hotel room for invisible stains of blood, urine, vomit, saliva, and semen. The idea came to her on a family vacation: “We were at a hotel room, and I wasn’t sure about the bathroom towels being clean. I said, “I don’t know if we want to stay here.’” She says it’s popular among concerned families, executives, and people who travel a lot – like her husband, who’s in medical sales. It’s available for $20 at Amazon, Walgreens, and directly from the company’s website.

MAY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

“It’s a proven technology used in law enforcement and by restaurant health inspectors,” she adds. Her daughter Mia is an entrepreneur-in-training, too. Last year, when she came home with an assignment to start a mock business, her mom helped her start a real one instead. “I was all over this. The thing was it had to be hand made,” Batista says. “She couldn’t buy it and sell it. We started looking for ideas in her room.” What they came up with was Banditz Hair Bandz, a set of colored elastic hair bands with interchangeable “charmz,” which include things like tiny flowers, cupcakes, and licensed characters. But they didn’t turn in that idea for class – they patented it and made up another one. (On which Mia got an “A.”) Batista is negotiating with Gibbitz, which makes the charms for shoes, and is now a distributor for them, too. She has many other ideas, but now with two other kids, she says, “I don’t think I have enough time in this lifetime to pursue all of them.” Batista has passed up more traditional work for her own businesses – partly because she’s always wanted to do it, and partly because she doesn’t think it would be fair to an employer or her children. “I don’t pretend I can operate everything with my kids, it doesn’t work, it’s not professional,” she says. “So it’s very easy, whenever I do business I’m available 8:30 to 1:30. I know by 1:30, I have to wrap up whatever it is, and be back with my kids.” She does get some more work in again after they’re off to bed, and that’s also when she catches up with her husband Gilbert, who travels frequently. “At the end of the day, I start to bother him, giving him updates on new accounts and texting him,” she says. “He brings a lot of sales experience and savviness on profit margins. That makes it fun and not stressful.”

Being a Mompreneur Gilda Batista has advised a lot of her girlfriends and fellow moms on starting a business. Here are some of her tips... Stop dreaming, start doing. “If it’s keeping you up at night and you really believe in it and you’re passionate, you should at least give it a try. I meet so many people who have ideas, but it’s having the time to kick the fear to the curb and do it. If you fail, well, I’m good at failing. That’s how you learn.” Launch a website for free. “Go to gybo.com/florida and learn how to build it and go in every day and modify it. It’s free. There’s a maintenance fee but it’s minimal, and you have to have a web presence.” ($7 a month after the first year.) Dedicate time and get committed. “Everything takes time, especially to self-educate. Read a lot of books, the information’s out there. One of my favorites is ‘One Simple Idea’ by Stephen Key.” Ask for help. “I reach out to local business owners and professionals when I have a question. We live in a very successful business community and if somebody asked me for something I’d love to share insight.”

S SILVER LINING CATERING 2059 Blount Road

Pompano Beach (954) 917-1020 ext. 314 Silverliningcatering.com Hollywood@silverliningcatering.com

TAKING OFF

What started as meals in the air has grown into a groundbreaking event company Mitch Amsterdam and Mike Linder, pioneeers of the private jet catering industry, began their round-the-clock business in 2001 with Silver Lining InFlight Catering. “It’s 24 hours a day, we’ve never closed in 12 years,” Linder says. The two lifelong friends have set the standard for aviation concierge services, providing a first class experience for worldwide jet travel out of South Florida (servicing all private airports from Orlando to Miami). Five years ago, the duo was looking for a new venture and opened one of South Florida’s most unique restaurant venues, Jet Runway Café (see box), located on the tarmac at FXE Airport in Fort Lauderdale. The café has earned rave reviews as the lines out the door can attest. Now they’ve moved on to their most ambitious challenge yet – becoming South Florida’s most exquisite catering and special events company.

70

MAY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

This means creating uniquely designed events ranging from intimate weddings (see box) to lavish galas. “There’s really nothing out of the ordinary that’s thrown us off in 12 years,” Linder says proudly. The reason might be Silver Lining’s size: 150 team members and two 20,000 square foot kitchens located in Pompano Beach and Palm Beach and a venue that can hold a jetliner – because it’s indeed an airplane hangar. That may be why Silver Lining has hosted Fortune 500 CEOs, Saudi royalty, celebrities, and musicians. But Catering and Events Director John “Hollywood” Abresch has another explanation. “The fact that we service the private jet industry makes us able to handle anything. The industry is so specific to demanding needs that if you can handle the clientele, you can handle anything and everything.”

Everything under one roof “When I sit down and talk to someone about what we do, they think we do the catering from Jet Runway Café,”Amsterdam says. “They don’t understand we have a completely separate catering company that provides food, lighting, décor, floral, and entertainment.” Another unique aspect of Silver Lining Catering is their venues, including Jet Runway Café, the tarmac on the runway, and the airplane hangar, which serves as a blank canvas for even the most creative of minds. They can handle events for hundreds of people and even thousands. For example, a recent MS Gala seated 1,200 and featured a runway fashion show, luncheon, and silent auction, all produced in house by the Silver Lining Team. Karen Dresbach, President of the MS Society of South Florida adds, “Mitch, John, and the entire team at Silver Lining went above and beyond with every detail to insure the event was a huge success. We could not have been more pleased.” “We are very into helping out the community,”

5540 NW 21st Terrace Fort Lauderdale jetrunwaycafe.com (954) 958-9900

Linder says. And the community has responded. The American Heart Association, Cameras for Kids Foundation, MS, Charity Guild, Deliver the Dream, and the Danielle Demarzo Foundation have all partnered with Silver Lining Catering over the past year to create some of the most illustrious and memorable galas and fundraisers. “The events are definitely first class and the attention to detail is like nothing we have ever seen before,” remarks Maria Hunt, The American Heart Assocation’s senior development director. “The AHA has used Silver Lining for several events, ranging from a young professionals event called Pulse to a Moulin Rouge party. Both had the wow factor.” Betsey Chesler, founder of the Cameras for Kids Foundation, has also relied on Silver Lining for several events. “You expect things to go wrong at a big event,” Chesler says. “But with Silver Lining, it’s just the opposite. I realized I could let them handle everything. They never cease to amaze.”

Jet Runway Cafe: really taking off The words “airport food” don’t often cause mouths to water. And who goes to an airport to eat when they don’t have somewhere to fly? But Jet Runway Café is a destination unto itself. The breakfast and lunch restaurant at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport has been called “one of the best lunch spots” in Fort Lauderdale by the Sun Sentinel and a “hidden gem” by New Times. Jet Runway Café has earned stellar reviews from sites like Yelp and Urban Spoon. “It’s one of those few South Florida restaurants where it’s hip to be seen,” co-owner Mitch Amsterdam says. “It’s right on the tarmac, the only one that’s directly on the runway. Private jets and helicopters pull right up, where both passengers and pilots come in to eat.” And some of those meals are as unique as the location, such as the turkey pretzel roll and the picnic basket sandwich consisting of BBQ pulled pork, pepper jack cheese, mac-n-cheese, and crispy onion strings on country white bread. While the restaurant isn’t open for dinner, it is available for private functions, much like its next door airplane hangar.

Weddings: plane, not plain When Mike Kontos got married in February, the easiest decision for him and his bride was “Who’s the caterer?” Silver Lining was Kontos’s only choice for the wedding. A pilot for a private jet company, Kontos has been eating Silver Lining InFlight Catering for years. It services the company he flies for, just as it has for pretty much every private flight departing from South Florida. Co-owner Mike Linder and Catering and Events Director John Abresh took the basic idea that Kontos had – to get married under the nose of a plane and hold the wedding reception in a hangar. They took it to epic proportions… The ceremony was held under the nose of a DC-3, the cocktail party was on the tarmac and the reception moved inside the airplane hangar. A four-course meal was served family style on a long table running down the center of the hangar. Kontos says, “I would definitely recommend them to anybody down here. Everything we wanted, they made happen.” It was the wedding he and his wife always dreamed of.

A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART TREATMENT IS NOW AVALABLE FOR TOENAIL FUNGUS DR. ERIC WEINSTEIN, D.P.M. 954.796.1800 Weston - 2300 N Commerce Pkwy. Suite 321 Weston 33326 Coral Springs - 817 Coral Ridge Dr. Coral Springs 33071

Dr Weinstein is the first physician in South Florida and one of the first in the country to utilize the PinPointe Foot Laser. Over the past 4 years he has performed over 2000 procedures. This FDA approved technology kills the pathogens that cause toenail fungus (Onychomycosis) The gentle laser light works through the nail. • Safe. • No side effects. • Does not harm the nail or skin. • Painless-no anesthesia needed. • Shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. A fungus infection of the toenail, also known as onychomycosis, is one of the most common dermatologic disorders affecting the foot. The disease is characterized by a thickening of the toenail plate, debris under the toenail, a lifting of the leading edge of the nail, a change in nail color and occasionally an odor. Patients complain that toenail fungus is ugly and embarrassing. This condition is often ignored because the infection can be present for years without causing any pain.

74

MAY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

Contributing factors for developing nail fungus infection include: • A history of athlete’s foot • Injury to the nail bed • Sports/ shoe trauma • Excessive perspiration • Diabetes • Circulatory problems • Immune-deficiency conditions Treatments for Fungal Nails Historically, treatments for fungal nails included topical medications, oral agents (pills) or surgical removal of the nail plate. The topical medications were largely ineffective. Oral agents have been known to have possible side affects involving the liver, stomach upset, rashes and temporary loss of taste. Blood tests are needed to monitor the liver enzymes. Removal of the nail plate was painful and debilitating. HOW DOES THE LASER WORK? This patented laser is specially designed to penetrate through your toenail and destroy the specific pathogens embedded in and under your nail causing the infection. IS THIS LASER PAINFUL? The gentle laser light beam has no effect on healthy tissue. There is no discomfort associated

with the treatment during or after. This treatment does not harm or affect your activity in any way. Some patients may experience the sensation of warmth. IS THIS TREATMENT SAFE? There are no age or health restrictions or limit ations. Worldwide over 150,000 PinPointe procedures have been performed with no adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or known side effects. As you may know, the use of the oral medication available today for treatment of fungus toenails, carries with it possible systemic involvement (commonly the liver and kidney). This laser does not! Dr Weinstein has offices in Weston and Coral Springs and has been in practice for 30 years. He is Board Certified by The American Board of Podiatric Medicine. He has lectured nationally about the PinPointe Foot Laser. He has appeared on Fox, ABC, and NBC local news regarding the PinPointe Foot Laser. The vagina serves as a passageway between the reproductive organs and the outside of the body. Vaginal discharge serves an important housekeeping function in the female reproductive system. Fluid made by glands inside the vagina and cervix carries away dead cells and bacteria. This keeps the vagina clean and helps prevent infection. The pH balance of the vagina is acidic, which discourages infections from occurring. This acidic environment is created by normally occurring bacteria call lactobacilli. The color and consistency of vaginal discharge vary from whitish and sticky to clear and watery between your menstrual periods, but also varies on different stages of life. Some situations like emotional stress, ovulation, pregnancy, sexual excitement can increase the amount of normal vaginal discharge. However, if your vaginal discharge has an unusual odor and appearance, or occurs along with itching or pain, it may be a sign that something’s wrong. Any interference with the delicate balance of vaginal secretions sets up an environment conducive to infection. Vaginal infections are very common, most women will experience some

form of a vaginal infection in their lifetime. SOME OF THE COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS ARE: • Discharge accompanied by itching, rash or soreness. • Persistent, increased discharge. • Burning on skin during urination. • White, clumpy discharge (somewhat like cottage cheese). • Grey/white or yellow/green discharge with a foul odor. • Bleeding or spotting unrelated to your period. COMMON CAUSES ARE DUE TO: • Yeast infection (It is caused by the overgrowth of a type of yeast called Candida, usually Candida albicans. This yeast is normally found in small amounts in the human body. A yeast infection is not a sexually transmitted illness. However, some men will develop symptoms such as itching and a rash on the penis after having sexual contact with an infected partner). • Bacterial vaginosis (BV-Bacteria that normally live in the vagina overgrow, causing a grey discharge and fishy odor that worsen after sexual intercourse. BV is usually not sexually transmitted). • Trichomoniasis (Trichomoniasis is almost always spread through sexual contact. However, the protozoan organism can survive for up to twenty-four hours in a moist environment, making wet towels or bathing suits possible instruments of transmission from someone with the infection). • Chlamydia & Gonorrhea (considered STD). • Dermatosis of the vagina.

• Forgotten tampon or foreign body. • Other infections and sexually transmitted infections. • Atrophic vaginitis (seen in menopause due to low estrogen levels). • Cervical or vaginal cancer. BELOW ARE SOME TIPS FOR PREVENTING VAGINAL INFECTIONS THAT CAN LEAD TO ABNORMAL DISCHARGE: • Have new partners wear condoms during sexual intercourse. • Stay healthy; eat well. • Keep vaginal area clean and dry. • Wear cotton underwear. • Wipe from front to back after urination or bowel movement. • Avoid using deodorant pads or tampons. • Don’t use petroleum jelly or other oils for lubricants. • Don’t douche. • Use medication as long as directed. • Avoid sexual intercourse until treatment is completed and you are symptom free. • Don’t scratch infected or inflamed areas; it can cause further irritation. • If using medication inside the vagina, use it during the menstrual period. • During an infection, use pads rather than tampons if menstruation occurs. • Avoid vulvo/vaginal irritants, including perfumed or deodorant soaps/body washes. If symptoms persist after completing the treatment, an exam is indicated. Call for an appointment, and please use nothing in the vagina for 48 hours prior to your exam.

lifestyle advice

WHEN TO PLAN TO SELL YOUR BUSINESS? NOW AND ALWAYS! Most people have a will. Your business needs one too, in the form of an exit plan. Most business owners will not sell voluntarily. Why? Selling a business is not the best way to make money from it. Most small businesses sell for 1-3 times adjusted earnings (larger ones can sell for more). So, if you are planning to stay working in your business for a longer than a few years, it pays to keep it. However, there are factors that can get in the way of your business “status quo”, and you need to have a plan to sell it. What do we typically see happen? • The business owner can no longer physically work. Death or disability will force a sale. If this happens, time is of the essence! The businesses’ value can evaporate daily! • The owner hates working in the business. Burn out is real and life is too short to be miserable. Understand you can simply sell and buy something else! • The business has unsolvable cash flow issues. Either it is a victim of its own success, and grows too quickly, or more often, gets into trouble monetarily. Time to sell in either case. • The business has grown beyond the owner’s capabilities. Many entrepreneurs are not good corporate CEO’s. Many times the founder is not the person who makes a business a huge success. • Outside economic or competitive forces change the industry, and your business is in danger or, there is huge opportunity. Either way you see the writing on the wall, and it is time to sell!

• A strategic buyer comes along and will pay the owner above a fair market value price. It may be time to cash in, rather than compete. Your proverbial ship has come in! Many times, there are combinations of reasons why the time to sell will come…and often it comes suddenly. What should you do in order to plan? 1. Formulate a plan. Write it down. When you reach your goal, punch out and do something else! 7. Be realistic and unemotional. A business can become like a child to entrepreneurs. health and youth in a few visits. She incorporates innovative technologies, personalized treatment plans and an experienced, highly trained and dedicated team. The newest trend is AntiAging and Biological (holistic) Dentistry. Physicians abroad are recommending all metals in their patients’ mouth be removed for optimal health. Not just anyone can remove these amalgam fillings; there are many precautions that need to be taken when dealing with the removal. ANTI-AGING MEDICINE Cardiologist, cancer specialists, endocrinologist and other medical experts are referring their patients to Dr. Cintron. These physicians understand how vital dental health is to the health of the whole body. Dr. Cintron is certified by “The IAOMT” to safely remove these potentially hazardous fillings. The body naturally has an electric current, especially in the mouth because of its proximity to the brain. The upper teeth are less than 2 inches from the brain, which causes much concern. The electrical activity is dramatically increased due to the placement of the fillings. The combination of the elements in these fillings releases both a positive and negative high electrical current and acts like small batteries in your mouth.

This has an impact in your immune and neurological system. DENTAL ARTISTRY Rather than pursue a career as an artist, Dr. Cintron made the right decision to manifest her creative eye for beauty into smile rejuvenation. “The love and passion I have for people and their health led me to cosmetic dentistry,” she says. Offering patients over 25 years of experience, Dr. Cintron is a proud member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, an organization that boasts rigorous membership criteria, representing her high standards and attention to detail. “There are certain things you do not learn in school. An artistic eye, for example, is a God-given gift. Seeing how a smile can look its best at any age comes naturally to me. It is fascinating to see the improvements cosmetic dentistry can have on health, energy, self-esteem, and appearance.” Since she is an international practice; out-of-town patients are escorted the moment they land in Fort Lauderdale, and are assigned a personal concierge, who ensures all of their needs are met including accommodations, transportation and more. Once the consultation begins, Dr. Cintron assesses each patient’s dental needs with high-tech photography and digital X-rays. After the data has been acquired, the patient is taken to a private office where their case is presented to them and the Doctor speaks oneon-one about their goals, concerns and options.

DO YOU HAVE AN

OPTIMAL THYROID? THYROID HORMONE RESISTANCE IS MORE COMMON THAN PEOPLE REALIZE. “I HAVE TRIED EVERY DIET KNOWN TO MAN (OR MOMS) THESE LAST FEW YEARS – TO NO AVAIL.” Alyson continued to tell me her story. “For example, this past summer, my best friend flew me to their home in Sonoma for an entire month. We ate nothing but organic everything, lean protein, I drank 150 ounce-plus of water a day and did a high intensity workout every morning mixing up interval training with boot camp at her gym. In exactly 30 days – I lost a grand total of THREE pounds. I didn’t even lose the initial ‘water weight’ everyone else loses.” I empathized, “It’s hard to stay motivated with minimal results.” “I’m willing to starve myself, if that would work. I even did two rounds of hCG. My wallet’s lighter, but that’s about it.” “The FDA recently published a website, www.fda.gov/hcgdiet, detailing how hCG diet products are illegal, and how restrictive diets such as that one can cause electrolyte disturbances, an irregular heartbeat and are potentially fatal.” I continued, “But looking at your diet history, I don’t think the problem is one of eating too much.” “Dr. Woliner, what else could it be? I have a friend that blew up taking Abilify for her depression, and another while on Actos for diabetes, but I’m not on any medications.” “It’s true that many drugs have

weight gain as a common side effect [1]. But there are other causes of weight gain. With your other symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, and constipation, I’m thinking that you have an untreated thyroid condition [2].” “I begged my other doctors to treat me for that, but they all said no.” “Some doctors focus too much on lab tests without considering the patient’s history and physical exam findings [3]. Thyroid hormone resistance is more common than people realize.” Alyson sat with a puzzled look on her face. “So, even if these doctors said my tests were normal, I might still have a thyroid problem? [4]” “The word ‘normal’ has many meanings. There is a difference between ‘common’ and ‘optimal’ [5]. Rather than using a range that includes people who are overweight and being treated for high cholesterol and other conditions, perhaps it would be better to use narrower ranges of persons who feel ‘dandy’ [6].” “Does anyone even use that word anymore?” “My practice is built on patientto-patient referrals. Just liking my bedside manner is not enough to convince your friends to see me. You have to glow. So yes, I do plan on making you feel dandy.” After finishing Alyson’s physical exam, my staff used our Korr indirect calorimetry machine to measure her metabolic rate [7].

“You’re at ‘minus 20%’. That’s one of slowest metabolism’s I’ve ever seen!” “How do we fix that?” “I use a holistic approach that combines behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, and of course medications [8,9]. I prefer to use T3 based drugs as they have been shown to cause significantly more weight loss than T4 drugs such as Synthroid alone [10].” As I ramped up Alyson’s dose of thyroid medication, her fatigue and other symptoms began to resolve. To be on the safe side, I periodically rechecked her EKG and bone density, which remained normal [11]. “Dr. Woliner, your scale says I only lost 49 pounds, but at home, naked, I’m down 51!” Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a boardcertified family physician in private practice in Boca Raton. PUBLIC RELATIONS BECOMING MORE ABOUT YOU AND LESS ABOUT THE MEDIA JULIE TALENFELD

President, Boardroom Communications

1776 N Pine Island Road Suite 320 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33322 954.370.8999 www.BoardroomPR.com Public relations is taking on a bigger role in making companies successful. You’re playing a bigger role, too. If you think about how you avoid business messages, it’s easy to see why. Don’t want to watch TV ads? Zip by them on your DVR. Want to hide “sponsored content” on your Facebook page? Click the “X” box in the upper-right-hand corner. Tired of listening to ads on your car radio? Plug in your iPod. Because it’s become so easy to tune out advertising, selling has become less about getting people to buy something and more about getting their attention. Marketing and public relations also generate awareness, and with more companies combining traditional media – like a magazine – with online media, the lines among the three have blurred. Not that long ago, public relations was about getting a client’s name in the newspaper, on TV or in a magazine. That’s still part of the job, but a smaller part as the number of media outlets shrink. Now, it’s about getting people to share information about a company or

80

MAY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

an individual. For a local restaurant, that can mean getting the word out through Facebook posts. When it works, that restaurant can have people lined up around the building on the first day of business and win a local TV station’s “best restaurant” poll. (True story.) What does that mean for your business? Should you dump your advertising and put all your money behind public relations? I’d like that if it you were hiring me. Seriously, you should look more at your message than where you’re spending your money. Lifestyle Magazine is a great way to raise awareness and engage audiences, especially if you’re looking for sophisticated readers. But what are you telling them? If it’s “Buy! Buy! Buy!” readers are likely to flip the page. If you share information or tell a story, you can capture their attention. And if readers like what they

see, they’re likely to tell their friends. And those friends will tell their friends. That’s the game today: engaging people. Think about the most effective Super Bowl ads this year. The top ad was Budweiser’s “Brotherhood,” about a man who raises a Clydesdale to adulthood and is reunited with the horse three years later. Second place: American Dairy Association’s “Morning Run” about The Rock forsaking his hero role because he has a more important job: getting fresh milk for his kids. That’s what public relations is about: giving people a good story that they want to share with others. Sometimes those people are reporters. More and more often, they’re people like you. HOW HCG PREVENTS STARVATION WHILE LOSING FAT “Anyone who eats 500 calories per day will lose weight! So why do I need hCG too?” This is one of the many misconceptions about using hCG in weight loss. This article addresses this and explains why hCG is necessary before reducing calories to that degree in order to safely lose fat. Before we get started, when I speak of hCG, I am referring to injectable human chronic gonadotropin. Dr. Oz fans may recall an episode where he touted the benefits of injectable hCG programs while working with a knowledgeable professional. Ok, so it’s true that if most people ate only 500 calories per day they would lose weight. But they would also lose muscle and lower their metabolism. Then when they resume their old eating habits they will not only regain the weight faster but also make it more difficult to lose weight in the future. Therefore, reducing your calories to this extent to lose weight is NOT a good idea nor healthy. So why do I promote this program of encouraging my clients to reduce their caloric intake? Because hCG prevents the effects of starvation and I will tell you how. But first it’s necessary to understand another hormone called Leptin and its role in fat storage and fat burning. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells. It’s one of the most important

hormones because it’s how your fat stores communicate how much energy is available and what to do with it to your brain. When your body is functioning correctly and your fat stores are full, Leptin signals the brain to stop feeling hungry. Physical hunger and subsequently the act of eating food activates the production of Leptin which triggers energy release. All food stimulates Leptin production meaning that food is a hormonal stimulant. The amount of Leptin produced is a direct result of the size of a person’s fat organ. If a person eats beyond physical hunger (emotional hunger is another subject) the excess energy produced will be recycled and stored in additional fat cells. Thus a piece of fruit will affect a lean and obese person differently. Ok so here’s the link, like food hCG also stimulates the release of Leptin, allowing your body to produce energy from its stored fat cells preventing starvation and muscle loss. Because your Leptin levels remain high you will not feel hungry. Thus taking hCG will protect your body from the effects of starvation even though you are consuming a low calorie eating plan. Because food also stimulates

LANA KERR Certified Wellness Coach and Life Counselor Nutritional Consultant Your Fat Loss Coach www.yourfatlosscoach.com 954.636.6300

Leptin, it is important that you strictly adhere to the structured eating plan while on hCG. Otherwise you risk thyroid damage if not done correctly. So in conclusion, hCG is a powerful hormone that can protect your body when on a low calorie eating plan. However, hCG should NOT be used or viewed as a casual diet, but as a phenomenal tool to achieve hormonal balance while releasing fat and to help bring your body back into balance.

WILL THE U.S. DOLLAR MAINTAIN ITS DOMINANCE? EMERALD ASSET ADVISORS, LLC

Allan Budelman, Managing Partner

2843 Executive Park Drive Weston, FL 33331 954.370.8999 www.EmeraldAssetAdvisors.com

Since the end of World War II, the U.S. has been the world’s foremost economic superpower and the U.S. dollar has been the world’s de facto reserve currency. In fact, it was during the Bretton Woods Conference in New Hampshire in 1944 when central bankers from around the world first agreed to peg their currencies to the U.S. dollar. At that time the U.S. dollar was backed by the gold standard, which meant that foreign countries could exchange their dollars for actual gold. In 1971, the U.S. abandoned the gold standard and the modern foreign exchange market was born, characterized by floating exchange rates. The U.S. dollar has remained the world’s currency reserve currency due to the following factors: large circulation, stability of its political system, denomination of many transactions being in US dollars (i.e., oil and other natural resources) and the lack of other viable options. Virtually no one can predict accurately what the future holds for the U.S. dollar, nor the timing of those movements. Even Warren Buffett got it wrong for several years in the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio. Over the long term, however, exposure to

82

MAY 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

foreign currencies can help further diversify investor portfolios and help hedge against a possible decline in the U.S. dollar. Currencies have also proven to be an excellent source of non-correlated returns, as price fluctuations are driven by different factors than other asset classes. For example, central banks around the world may intervene in currency markets to prop up or drive down the value of their currency. Similarly, multinational corporations may buy or sell currencies to reduce currency risk. Even tourists can influence currency markets when they decide to visit a certain country and spend money on travel, souvenirs, or other consumer goods. Such non-profitseeking entities generate the majority of total currency turnover and the combined effects of their actions create inefficiencies that can be exploited for profit. Investors can gain exposure to foreign currencies by investing in large U.S. multi-national corporations that conduct business in foreign countries, or investors can invest in a professionally managed basket of currencies which will provide portfolio diversification.

We live in an increasingly globalized economy whereby the developed nations of the world are facing slow growth (or recession), aging populations, and growing debt burdens. Meanwhile, emerging markets economies have young, fast-growing populations and higher economic growth. As these nations climb the economic ladder, it’s quite possible that the U.S. dollar’s dominance of the world economy could decline further. If the Federal Reserve continues its easy money policies, this could lead to higher inflation that would devalue the U.S. dollar.

WestonLawyers.com Golf Classic Held at Weston Hills Country Club As a student at Western High School nearly a decade ago, Jerry Gomez had a bright future ahead of him. He attended FIU and then went on to graduate at the top of his class from NYU Law School. He says a scholarship he received from the Rotary Club of Weston made all the difference in achieving his dreams of higher education. “The scholarship took a lot of financial pressure off my family and allowed me to pursue my studies,” said Gomez. “The program is helping a lot of people in the community who might not otherwise be able to afford college and fulfill their own dreams.” Most of the money in the Scholarship Fund is raised through the annual WestonLawyers.com Golf Classic which this year was held on Monday, April 8th at Weston Hills Country Club. Now in its 26th year, the WestonLawyers. com Golf Classic has raised more than $1,000,000. The scholarships are available to seniors at Cypress Bay, Western and Sagemont who have excellent grades, a solid record of community service and the financial need. “The Golf Classic is one of the most important things we do throughout the year,” said Mary Beth Casey, tournament co-chair. “Not only do we raise money to help kids, but the

tournament gives our members an opportunity to develop and strengthen business relationships in an environment that promotes fellowship.” WestonLawyers.com, a law firm with offices in Weston and Fort Lauderdale that focuses on medical malpractice and personal injury cases, has been the title sponsor of the tournament for the past several years. Firm partners Michael Freedland and Daniel Harwin are proud to take a lead role again this year. “Our firm has enjoyed a lot of success here in Weston and we are honored to give back to the community,” said managing partner Michael Freedland, a co-chair of the event with Casey and Keith Petron. “Last year we were able to pay out $50,000 in scholarships and we hope to be able to do more this year.” “We encourage other companies and individuals to join us and feel what it’s like to change the life of a young person,” says Harwin. This year’s Golf Classic was presented by Broward Collision, Acuderm, Inc., The Law Offices of Brad E. Coren, P.A., Community Bank of Broward and Sprint/Nextel of Weston.

Café Maxx Impeccable dining, unpretentious ambience BY RANDI AILEEN PRESS, DINING DUCHESS

C

afé Maxx is a destination, not just a dining experience. Those who desire impeccable food in a lively yet unpretentious atmosphere will be drawn to this landmark restaurant in Pompano Beach. Darrel Broek greets guests as they enter the main dining area. He has a charm and energy that’s captivating. The same is true of Chef Oliver Saucy, as he moves effortlessly in his kitchen preparing enticing

88

dishes for patrons in the café. That identical energy radiates throughout the staff. Justin Dever, our server, has been with Café Maxx for more than 13 years. He enthusiastically shares how the chef changes the menu daily, but some items are favorites and remain always. He’s not a typical server. Justin has taken a step beyond to learn specifics on wine, food, and how to educate the diner on what is best to order with a specific entrée. Chef Oliver makes it extraordinarily difficult to

choose between appetizers. They’re all enticing. The fresh chilled Maine Lobster Summer Roll with citrus and sweet chili ponzu is light and delicious. The Slice of Caviar Pie is served with egg, onion, layers of sour cream, and topped with tobiko caviar. It’s wonderful. But there are two must-haves appetizers you won’t want to miss. The Tuna Sashimi Pizza is unique. Served on a fried wonton, this crispy pizza with wasabi cream cheese, ginger, and caviar is outrageous. “Almost every table orders the pizza,” Justin smiles, and now I know why. The most tempting is the Sautéed Hudson Valley Duck Foie Gras. Served with key lime curd, wilted spinach, and orangepomegranate sauce, this is beyond words. The curd almost resembles a bread pudding. Unbelievably delectable! There are many options when ordering at Café Maxx. Soups, salads, pastas, lighter fare (reduced calories, lower carbohydrates and smaller portions), along with other selections that will tempt you. There is something for every palate. When the entrees are served, every plate is a piece of art. The Dark Cherry and Raspberry

Glazed Duck Breasts rest on a double potato and mascarpone au gratin with beans and carrots. The sauce is a mixture between a touch of sweet with the right amount of spice to sneak up on you. The Three Peppercorn Filet Mignon is tender and extraordinary. The steak is prepared spot on and is delicately placed next to the three cheese au gratin potatoes, shallot-thyme compound butter, and natural jus. This is one menu item that is always offered and ordered. A fish dish not to miss is the Lemon Herb Salmon. Perfectly seasoned, flaky and delicious, the salmon is placed on top of ruby and gold beets, sweet potatoes, spinach, and just the right amount of citrus butter. By this time, you are satiated but you cannot miss dessert. Room must be made for pastry chef Bernie Delacruz’s specials and house favorites. I believe in eating desserts always. Life is short and sweets are worth indulging. I also believe that Café Maxx’s Butterscotch Bread Pudding may be one of the best I have ever had in the world. Served with pretzel crumble, caramel drizzle, and vanilla ice cream, you will not be disappointed. The Warm Apple Tart with apple jack caramel, almond frangipane, and cinnamonscented ice cream also rivals the pudding. Also worth mentioning is the Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee. You will love the almond lace cup with pineapple rum caramel sauce and cookies decorating the plate. Café Maxx celebrated its 29th year anniversary last month. Enjoy a simply wonderful dinner or celebrate something special with Darrel and Chef Oliver.
