April 1819. François Constantin takes responsibility for the worldwide business expansion of Vacheron Constantin. During a business trip to Italy, this visionary man coined the phrase which would become the company motto in a letter addressed to the manufacture: « …do better if possible, and that is always possible …».

True to this motto and to the spirit that forged its history, Vacheron Constantin still remains committed to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking in order to provide its clients with the highest standards of technology, aesthetics and finish.

My hope is that you stand up with me and tell our politicians that unless they start compromising and getting things done, they cannot count on our money anymore. NEWS&

NOTES A shell of a time

Out of this world: Cypress Bay in spaceback Six students from Cypress Bay High School in Weston have won the grand prize in the 2013 NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Contest. What’s that? Just an international contest among more than 1,500 students from 20 countries, with the goal of designing a “space settlement plan.” The Cypress Bay team won the $5,000 top prize for a project called “Maui,” described like this in its 126-page proposal… “Maui tells a story of how extraterrestrial colonies may grow and develop from ramshackle frontier towns to bustling cities. Maui is the narrative of mankind’s first permanent settlement in the Saturn system, orbiting the moon Titan. This project will be divided into three phases, each taking a snapshot of Maui during a crucial period in its history. Phase 1 will read like a conventional design proposal. It is a plan for building a 124-person mining and scientific research base around Titan. It will include not only the engineering details of how this is to be done, but provide a strong economic case for why Terran entrepreneurs will initially invest in the project. The ultimate goal of phase 1 is to create enough of a profit to pay off Maui’s initial investment.” That impressed NASA senior research engineer Al Globus: “The Maui team delivered a unique and creative project based on energy export from Saturn and presented it in an original and believable manner incorporating both engineering and storytelling, cementing a place for Florida among the top of student space settlement design areas in the world.” Last month, the students (Robert Gitten, Jackie Linevsky, Zared Schwartz, Jonathan Schiller, Reagan Fuhr, and Gabriel Teixeira) and their advisers (Cypress Bay physics teachers Jeffrey Rose and Angela Ashley) picked up their prize at the International Space Development Conference in San Diego. “These kids are truly amazing and are the future of American Space Exploration,” Ashley says. “It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with them. I can’t wait to see where the future takes them.”

This month, the Museum of Discovery and Science hosts its annual evening Turtle Walks. Nature permitting, you’ll have a chance to watch a 300-pound Loggerhead sea turtle venture out of the ocean to lay her eggs. Your walk begins with a talk at 9 p.m. at MODS in downtown Fort Lauderdale, where you’ll learn all about turtles. Then you head to the beach. While this is a a perfect family event, be prepared to walk about 1-2 miles. All participants must be 9 years of age or older. Advance reservations are required, and the cost is $18 for MODS members and $20 for non-members. Call 954713-0930 for details. www.mods.org

Hanbury the humanitarian

The sixth president of Nova Southeastern University is the 2013 Humanitarian of the Year from the Samuel M. & Helene Sorefe Jewish Community Center. George Hanbury II was bestowed the honor on April 28 at the Signature Grand. It was the second such award for the former Fort Lauderdale city manager – he won the Ease Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award in 2011.

Tasting and making

Charitable wine tastings aren’t rare in Broward County, but the latest from the HOPE Outreach Center adds a new twist: mozzarella making. On June 7, the center takes over Gino’s Italian Market in Hollywood for “A Taste of Italy.” Tickets are $30. Call Lois Pevin-Weiss at 954805-9109 for details.

New blood

The American Red Cross has added Ray Ferrero, Jr., to its Broward County board of directors. Ferrero was president of Nova Southeastern University from January 1998 to December 2009 – during which time enrollment increased 72 percent. “I will work with the American Red Cross and local business and government leaders to build resiliency and preparedness right here in South Florida,” Ferrero says.

Don’t wait . . .

Our families often wish they had called months sooner. “We all felt such a sense of relief as soon as we were in Hospice’s care. We had a team of medical experts who were always there for us. Their loving care gave my mother the encouragement to go forward. They gave her the sense that each day of her life was worthwhile. This restored her hope and gave her a wonderful sense of peace.”

stop suffering from migraines Kody was a chronic headache and migraine sufferer who was on a daily regimen of pain medicine. After his very first treatment, Kody headaches disminished significantly.

no pain no drugs no needles

Ever since I can remember I had headaches. When I was a teenager I noticed my jaw was locking and clicking. My parents took me to all kinds of Doctors and I had many scans, and MRI's. No one could find out why I had this terrible condition. Each Doctor would put me on another medication to control my pain. I found Dr. Kodish two months ago and I am very thankful. Since I began tru-denta therapy I am pain free for the first time since I can remember. I feel like I can go on trips and be normal again.

HISTORY OF BROWARD HEALTH

Broward Broward Health Health Medical Medical Center Center celebrates celebrates 75 75 years years ofof good good health. health. ON JANUARY 2, 1938, BROWARD GENERAL HOSPITAL OPENED IN FORT LAUDERDALE - was the first hospital to offer medical services to the residents of Broward County. In a renovated apartment building, formerly known as the Granada Apartments on Southeast First Avenue, the hospital had 45 beds, one operating room, a delivery room and an x-ray machine. Things we currently take for granted like air-conditioning or heating they didn’t have. Now three quarters of a century later, Broward Health operates more than 30 healthcare facilities, from the Chris

Evert Children’s Hospital in Fort Lauderdale to Broward Health Coral Springs. The entire system has more than 8,000 employees. Broward General Hospital is now called the Broward Health Medical Center and it has more than 3,100 employees and 900 doctors. The number that matters the most to Newana Bowman is “one”, because she was the first baby born at the original Broward General 13 days after it opened. “My sister and brother were born at home” Bowman says. Her family doctor had retired when Bowman’s mother was pregnant with her – and that is how she became the first baby born in a hospital in Broward County.

Here are some other big numbers for Broward Health…

1950s

Two additional patient floors were added, along with a new surgical unit, a laboratory, kitchen and dining space, and an emergency department. The first electrocardiogram machine in Broward County, one of only two in the state, was installed.

1960s

The coronary care unit opened, along with the first follow-up pacemaker clinic in the country. The Robinson Wing raised the bed total to 468 plus 50 bassinets. In 1962, the first black physician received full privileges and opened its doors to the black community and The first kidney transplant in Broward County was performed in 1969

1970s

The first cardiac cath lab opened along with the neonatal ICU, and the first ED Communications Disaster Control network in the state was established. They became one of a few medical institutions in the nation to offer radiation therapy. The first open heart surgery took place and they are first in the county to use nuclear medicine as a diagnostic tool

1980s

A lithotripter, a sleep disorder lab and the first MRI in the area were installed. The Medical office building and parking garage were built and the first open heart surgery received its first heart donor.

BROWARD HEALTH’S FIRST BABY: NEWANA BOWMAN Says the lifelong Pompano Beach resident: “There was nothing between Fort Lauderdale and Pompano at that time. We didn’t even know anything about Las Olas Boulevard!”

The NICU was designated a perinatal regional center

1990s

The Chris Evert Children’s Hospital and Women’s Center opened. The Trauma Center was Designated as a LEVEL I Trauma Center

2000s

A partnership was set up with Jackson Memorial Hospital to perform the county’s first liver transplant A $150 million dollar expansion of a 485,000 square foot addition took place, and The Lillian S. Wells Women’s Center is opened

ENTREPRENEUR HALL OF FAME AWARDS AT THE END OF APRIL. THE SIGNATURE GRAND WAS PACKED WITH LEADERS OF BUSINESSES BOTH BIG AND SMALL, AS THEY HONORED THE THREE 2013 INDUCTEES. BUT WHAT ABOUT THEIR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS? WHEN THEY WERE NERVOUS AND BROKE? HERE ARE THEIR STORIES – AND THEIR ADVICE. WHILE THEY’RE ALL VERY DIFFERENT MEN, YOU’LL NOTICE THEY HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON BESIDES THEIR SUCCESS: THEY CREDIT OTHERS WITH HELPING THEM GET WHERE THEY ARE, WHETHER IT BE A WIFE, A

In September 1979, Tom Shea quit his job as employment manager at Memorial Hospital in Hollywood to launch his own business. His new office was his 849-square-foot condo, TOM H. SHEA and his budget was $2,000. Oh, and his new pursuit was something that had never been done before in Florida. The 33-year-old Shea launched Florida’s first outplacement firm. His job? Help laid-off employees find jobs. (A downsizing company hires an outplacement firm to help its soonto-be-former employees find new work in the field or get trained for other fields.) “Outplacement existed in New York and other places, but not here,” Shea recalls. “I wanted to do outplacement, it was my calling.” So what was the response from other HR professionals in South Florida? Shea got a lot of “That’s stupid.” But here’s why he was smart… • He thought about starting his own business long before he did. “If you haven’t woken up every morning for months thinking about starting your own business, you shouldn’t do it,” he says. Shea says he spent months not ony researching his decision to start his own business, he thought about it when he when he went to sleep and when he woke up in the morning. • He relentlessly researched it. Sheea even took his two weeks’ vacation to attend a workshop in Kansas City hosted by the author of “What Color is Your Parachute?” “That book is about career counseling,” Shea says. He still swears by it.

MOTHER, OR A BOSS. • He didn’t risk everything. His wife Maureen still worked as a recruiter – “She

was making 26,000, and that was big bucks for us” – and he set aside $2,000 of their $10,00 in savings. “We weren’t risking our life savings on a whim,” he says.

Leighton admits, “You get an uneasy feeling in the beginning – your next paycheck is coming from yourself. But the first sale? That’s all it took. You booked it, you shipped it, and wow, it was fun. Let’s do more.”

• He had emotional support. If Shea wasn’t well capitalized, he was well-loved. “Maureen said go for it. And when I said, ‘What if it doesn’t work,’ she said, ‘Then you get a real job,’” Shea recalls with a laugh.

• Financial rewards should never be a priority over customer service. Just last year, Leighton attended an annual aviation convention in Orlando and ran across one of his longtime clients. After 30 years working with Leighton, this client was retiring from the industry. Leighton says it got emotional.

And that, Shea says, is how “I became an apostle of outplacement.”

“We took pictures, we hugged,” Leighton says. “That was a pretty special moment.”

★ THE WHOLE STORY ABOUT PARTS ARMANDO LEIGHTON, JR CEO, JET SPARES, INC. When you call Jet Spares, Inc., if you get put on hold, you’ll hear this: “The company began in his mother’s garage…” It’s perhaps one of the few hold messages that make you want to know more. Here it is: In 1972, when Armando Leighton was 13, he got a job. “I ARMANDO LEIGHTON, JR wasn’t even legal to work, but he was a neighbor,” Leighton recalls. The neighbor owned an aviation company, and Leighton earned $1.50 an hour to work in shipping and receiving. When he was 19, he got a better job, as purchasing manager for an FAA repair station. But he almost didn’t take it, out of respect for his neighbor. “One of the hardest things to do was leave him,” he says. But in 1982, with $2,000 in savings, he established his own aviation parts busines. His office was his garage. His only part-time employee was his mother. But sales stacked up fast. “The numbers were pretty large,” he says. “By the third year, we were grossing revenues of $1 milion – out of a garage.” Why? Because Leighton followed a few rules. • How can I make myself different than the rest? For Leighton, it was customer service. He’d follow up with customers, eve from pay phones: “Mr. Customer, did you get your part? Are you happy with it? That’s how we captured market share.” • Never be apprehensive to take calculated risks.

FELIX S. SABATES

★ A SEA OF SUCCESS FELIX S. SABATES, JR., CHAIRMAN, TRINITY YACHTS Growing up in Cuba in the 1950s, Felix Sabates recalls, “My mother used to go to what today would be considered the welfare office, and they gave her rice to cook. So we were poor.” So at 16, he fled Castro’s Cuba and came to the United States – by himself. He knew very little English and had very little with him. Besides his clothes, he had a few dollars and a couple boxes of cigars. Sabates landed in Boston, washing pots and pans in a hospital. Eventually, he made his way Missouri, where he attended high school and washed more pots and pans. Eventually, he ended up in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he worked at the airport. “I parked cars and washed cars,” he recalls. In 1964, he parlayed that into a job selling them at a Chevy dealer. When he sold a car to an executive at a company called Top Sales, “I asked him for a job.” And when the owner wanted to retire, Sabates bought the company – “even though I had no money.” Sabates recalls: “He worked with me, and he cosigned the loan for me. If he hadn’t given that opportunity, I wouldn’t be here today. He gave me a break of a lifetime.” From there, Sabates built up Top Sales by launching products like the Teddy Ruxpin talking bear and Atari’s videogame Pong. He met the owners of Trinity Yachts, and eventually bought the company. What has Sabates learned from his rags-to-riches life? • “You can’t do it by yourself.” Sabates says he worked hard to get where he is, but that alone wouldn’t have been enough if others hadn’t recognized and nurtured his potential. • “I never looked back in my life, good, bad or indifferent.” It’s not that Sabates has no regrets, just that he sees value in them. “You learn from the bad experiences, you benefit from the good ones,” he says. Sabates says it’s a cliche, but perhaps because it’s true: “A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits.”

EAT, DRINK AND MAKE Money If you want to throw Dad a party, you can rent out and shut down most South Florida restaurants. But only one will let you gamble as you dine. That’s because only one can legally offer blackjack with its meals. Martorano’s Italian restaurant in Hollywood’s Seminole Hard Rock Casino plaza got permission just a few weeks ago to add a couple of blackjack tables inside its over-the-top establishment. Owner Steve Martorano has already made a name for himself by selling “the world’s best meatball,” according to Gourmet magazine. “The games are legal because Martorano’s restaurant is on Seminole property, and the tribe has a five-year agreement with the state to offer blackjack,” Sun Sentinel gambling reporter Nick Sortl has written. “The casino gets the blackjack revenue. Martorano’s gets the increased traffic, the ambience, and high-rolling diners who don’t want to stray too far from the action.” Adds Larry Mullin, chief operating officer for Seminole Gaming: “The addition of Seminole Hard Rock blackjack tables to Martorano’s Italian-American kitchen is about having fun while enhancing the gaming and entertainment experience for our guests. We are offering a great time and great food. Steve and Seminole Hard Rock are all about having fun, and we are providing a unique atmosphere that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.” So if you’re looking to close down a restaurant for a private party, this one might be worth the gamble. www.martoranoshollywood.com

AN ATV THAT’S ALL WET The Quadski looks like a cross between an ATV and a Jet Ski – because it is a cross between those two. Made for both land and water, it reaches up to 45 mph on both. In five seconds, with the push of one button, the Quadski’s four tires retract, and you’re literally cruising. Quadskis start at $40,000, but for the money, you get a true headturner. When Quadski owners enter or emerge from the water, “as soon as they come out and park it, their normal reaction is usually WOW,” says Graham Jenkins, Quadski’s communications manager. The vehicles come in red, black, silver, blue and yellow, and are sold in only two stores in Florida: RIVA Motorsports in Pompano Beach, and Cycle Springs Powersports in Clearwater. www.gibbssports.com

BRINGING Dad HIS HEROS When former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber retired after the 2006 season, he missed you. “The problem is, once you retire, you kind of lose that connection to your community,” says Barber, who still lives in New York. “Replaced on the field and then ultimately in people’s minds. So while you have fans, you don’t have access to them.” Barber changed that 10 months ago when he founded Thuzio, a company with a clientele of athletes – including former Miami Heat player Tim Hardaway and current Miami Dolphin Paul Solai – who will hang out with you. For a price. The company has the majority of its athletes available in either New York or South Florida. A typical rental: Pay $1,000 to have lunch with Larry Little, the Hall of Fame guard on the perfect-season 1972 Dolphins. Barber says each athlete who participates chooses what events are available on the website, ranging anywhere from $149 for a phone call with Hardway to $4,000 for a coaching session with Solai. Bowling (yes, bowling) will set you back around $625, depending on the athlete. “What we’re attempting to, and what I think we’ve done, is give those who have great talent the ability to control their brand and monetize in ways that weren’t possible before,” Barber says. www.thuzio.com

MARCUSTHIGPEN: BEING THE FATHER HE NEVER HAD At 26, Miami Dolphins running back Marcus Thigpen is one of the younger members of Thuzio, and he’s been rented out for only one day so far – although, he says, “It was pretty cool. I just signed some autographs and took some pictures.” He got involved because he thought it was an easy way to make some extra money. After all, he has four young children to support – three daughters between 2 and 9 and a 3-year-old son. With such a large family, Father’s Day is important to Thigpen. Last year, “It was cool. My kids got me a lot of balloons and cards, some candy, took me out to eat. Basically just chilled with them on the beach. It was a good day.” And this year? “I don’t know, they may have something up their sleeves. I’m looking forward to it. My wife is always trying to surprise me, so I don’t know what to expect.” It’s quite a change from his own rough upbringing in Detroit. “My dad was never really around so we didn’t celebrate Father’s Day. My father was my mother, so I celebrated with her,” he recalls. “But for me, it’s a lot different because I’m involved with my kids life, and they love me. So to have that experience with them is a blessing.”

SIT AND Spin

On July 14, the new Superman movie Man of Steel is released in theaters. But you can see it in the comfort of your own home on the same day, and you can feel like you’re actually inside the movie. All for around $50,000. Genesis Automation of Fort Lauderdale will install a home theater system that you’ve never seen – or felt – before. Here’s some of what you get... 1. A BLACK BOX. It cost $35,000, but the box digitally downloads Hollywood movies that are coming out in theaters and allows you watch from home on the day of their release. For each movie, the ticket price is $500 – for one viewing. 2. D-BOX CHAIRS. “Your chair literally is moving in identical motion to the screen,” says Genesis president Brian Law. “It’s something that’s easy to describe but you don’t know until you sit in the chair and see it.” Law always demonstrates with the plane crash scene from the Tom Hanks film Castaway. “ Every client that I’ve had, I show them that same clip, and it’s always interesting to see their visceral reaction.” Cost: $15,000 to $60,000, depending on how many features you want. www.genesisautomationinc.com

THE CAUSE The Tony Segreto Athletics Scholarship Fund is named after the longtime South Florida TV broadcaster – who got his start as a sports reporter and worked his way up to one of the most recognized anchors in the market. Segreto spent more than 40 years on the air, up till his retirement from WTVJ Channel 6 in January 2009. But he’s remained active in the community. “Tony is great supporter and ambassador of our athletic program and our university,” says NSU Director of Athletics Michael Mominey. “His commitment and dedication to our department, our student-athletes and our community is unmatched and we are fortunate to have him as part of our Shark family.” Adds Segreto himself: “We are honored to be able to bring friends together for a wonderful night of food and fellowship and at the same time raise money to help a deserving student-athlete with their education. An education is one of the greatest gifts we can give, and to be able to do this with the help of so many incredible supporters is truly gratifying, we could not do this without them.”

THE CAUSE Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease of the respiratory and digestive systems that affects about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. Currently, there’s no cure, but through impressive research efforts, the median age of survival has risen to more than 37 years. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has consistently been recognized as one of the top voluntary health organizations in the United States and has been acknowledged by such publications as SmartMoney and Forbes for its efficiency and innovative approach to curing a genetic disease. Almost 90 cents of every dollar of revenue is available for investment in vital CF programs.

TICKETS Tickets to attend Fort Lauderdale’s Finest gala are available for $150 per person. For more information about the event, to purchase tickets, or to find out about sponsorship opportunities, call Elizabeth Weiss (954) 739-5006.

FORT LAUDERDALE’S FINEST GALA THE EVENT

When you title your charitable fundraiser “Fort Lauderdale’s Finest Gala,” you’ve set some high expectations. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation insists it’s up for the challenge. Held at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina, the gala will “honor young professionals for their success in business, outstanding leadership and their fundraising commitment to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” says Elizabeth Weiss, development director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-South Florida Office. More than 250 guests will honor Chelsea Barker, Kendra Cummings, Tammy Duncan, Brian Engel, Suzi Forum, Heather Geronemus, Greg Hoffman, Mackenzie Smith, Travis Suit, Mitch Taylor, Jeff Stark, Zachary Weiner, Alexandra Neto, AJ Rodriguez, Hilary Lis, Kristy Riano, Christina Chen, Kristopher Fisher, Molly Carey, and Cheryl Seinfeld. The evening will feature a silent auction, live entertainment, open bar, and dinner. All of that will be followed by dancing into the night. This year’s event is being chaired by two previous honorees, Joanna Piira and Britta Schlagger. Says Schlagger, the advertising manager at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek... “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation continues to make strides every year and I am proud to be a part of this amazing team. I became involved in the CFF Fort Lauderdale’s Finest as a honoree in 2009, joined the committee the following year and proud to have been co-chair for the past three years. It was a wonderful opportunity to give back and be a part of a group of young professionals who wanted to begin to make a difference. We as young professionals have an opportunity to set an example for others to get involved with the CFF and help support the development of new drugs to fight the disease, improve the quality of life for those with CF, and ultimately find a cure.”

health and youth in a few visits. She incorporates innovative technologies, personalized treatment plans and an experienced, highly trained and dedicated team. The newest trend is AntiAging and Biological (holistic) Dentistry. Physicians abroad are recommending all metals in their patients’ mouth be removed for optimal health. Not just anyone can remove these amalgam fillings; there are many precautions that need to be taken when dealing with the removal. ANTI-AGING MEDICINE Cardiologist, cancer specialists, endocrinologist and other medical experts are referring their patients to Dr. Cintron. These physicians understand how vital dental health is to the health of the whole body. Dr. Cintron is certified by “The IAOMT” to safely remove these potentially hazardous fillings. The body naturally has an electric current, especially in the mouth because of its proximity to the brain. The upper teeth are less than 2 inches from the brain, which causes much concern. The electrical activity is dramatically increased due to the placement of the fillings. The combination of the elements in these fillings releases both a positive and negative high electrical current and acts like small batteries in your mouth.

This has an impact in your immune and neurological system. DENTAL ARTISTRY Rather than pursue a career as an artist, Dr. Cintron made the right decision to manifest her creative eye for beauty into smile rejuvenation. “The love and passion I have for people and their health led me to cosmetic dentistry,” she says. Offering patients over 25 years of experience, Dr. Cintron is a proud member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, an organization that boasts rigorous membership criteria, representing her high standards and attention to detail. “There are certain things you do not learn in school. An artistic eye, for example, is a God-given gift. Seeing how a smile can look its best at any age comes naturally to me. It is fascinating to see the improvements cosmetic dentistry can have on health, energy, self-esteem, and appearance.” Since she is an international practice; out-of-town patients are escorted the moment they land in Fort Lauderdale, and are assigned a personal concierge, who ensures all of their needs are met including accommodations, transportation and more. Once the consultation begins, Dr. Cintron assesses each patient’s dental needs with high-tech photography and digital X-rays. After the data has been acquired, the patient is taken to a private office where their case is presented to them and the Doctor speaks oneon-one about their goals, concerns and options.

WHEN TO PLAN TO SELL YOUR BUSINESS? NOW AND ALWAYS! ANDREW CAGNETTA

Certified Business Intermediary CEO, Transworld Business Advisors Offices Nationwide 954-772-1122 www.tworld.com ac@tworld.com

Most people have a will. Your business needs one too, in the form of an exit plan. Most business owners will not sell voluntarily. Why? Selling a business is not the best way to make money from it. Most small businesses sell for 1-3 times adjusted earnings (larger ones can sell for more). So, if you are planning to stay working in your business for a longer than a few years, it pays to keep it. However, there are factors that can get in the way of your business “status quo”, and you need to have a plan to sell it. What do we typically see happen? • The business owner can no longer physically work. Death or disability will force a sale. If this happens, time is of the essence! The businesses’ value can evaporate daily! • The owner hates working in the business. Burn out is real and life is too short to be miserable. Understand you can simply sell and buy something else! • The business has unsolvable cash flow issues. Either it is a victim of its own success, and grows too quickly, or more often, gets into trouble monetarily. Time to sell in either case. • The business has grown beyond

68

the owner’s capabilities. Many entrepreneurs are not good corporate CEO’s. Many times the founder is not the person who makes a business a huge success. • Outside economic or competitive forces change the industry, and your business is in danger or, there is huge opportunity. Either way you see the writing on the wall, and it is time to sell! • A strategic buyer comes along and will pay the owner above a fair market value price. It may be time to cash in, rather than compete. Your proverbial ship has come in! Many times, there are combinations of reasons why the time to sell will come…and often it comes suddenly. What should you do in order to plan? 1. Formulate a plan. Write it down. Tell people where it is. 2. Have your specific wishes known by your family, senior staff, and advisors. Who is in charge? Should they sell immediately? Who should they listen to for advice? 3. Give someone power of attorney or have someone able to sign for your company in your absence or

JUNE 2013 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

disability. 4. Get insurance! Have a Life & Disability policy! A buy-sell agreement can easily be funded by insurance and make everyone whole in often a very turbulent time. 5. Meet with a business broker, spend time with them, and befriend them. Review your financials annually or bi-annually with them and understand your business market value. A strong relationship with a broker and knowledge of the marketplace will make selling your business relatively painless. 6. Have a sell price! When you reach your goal, punch out and do something else! 7. Be realistic and unemotional. A business can become like a child to entrepreneurs. This can lead to bad decisions about when to sell or dispose of a business. Try to listen to others and understand when the time to sell is upon you. One thing is certain in business ownership. One day you will not own it. The only question is how that is going to come to be, and with help, it can be a very profitable and easy transition!

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO MEN’S HEALTH “My wife made me come.” It was no joke. Bruce hadn’t been to a doctor in over ten years. “My father had a heart attack at 48 and since I’m now 45, I guess Sandy’s concerned a bit. I tell her not to worry, but she still does.” Men don’t like seeing doctors. Being in denial is often preferred to feeling vulnerable and weak. “I’ll make this as painless as possible. I am going to give you a complete physical that should put your wife’s mind at ease.” Other than his father’s heart attack, Bruce’s history was rather unremarkable. He didn’t smoke and had normal blood pressure, but there were some items on his review of systems checklist. “Persistent old injury?” “I tore my rotator cuff while in college, but it never quite healed right; so I take Advil before my basketball games.” “Trouble maintaining an erection?” Bruce hesitated. “This is a little embarrassing to say, but I don’t know if I satisfy my wife.” I put down my pen. “I don’t have to write this down.” “Okay then. After we have sex, I’m ready to go to sleep, but I can sense her frustration. That’s all.” “There are some things we can do for these concerns, but how about we finish our exam so I can give you a clean bill of health. I want to check your cholesterol, among other things.” “No need doc. When I gave

blood they said my number was 196.” “That’s fine, but the truth is that most people that have heart attacks have normal cholesterol. There are better tests which are more predictive of heart attacks [1].” Bruce harrumphed. “Other than adding a fish oil capsule and a baby aspirin I’d say you’re doing everything right to protect your heart. Now let’s make it so you enjoy your life better by fixing your shoulder and improving your sexual performance.” “Pecs and Peckers.” “Nicely put. For your rotator cuff, I’m going to use TRIGGER POINT MYOTHERAPY, the same therapy that JFK’s doctor used to treat his ailing back. BTW, you’re not training for the Olympics, are you?” “No, but my basketball team is second in the league. I’ll take any edge I can get.” “Then I’m going to test you for low Testosterone [2].” “And that would help me in bed?” “Not exactly. I agree that low testosterone levels could cause low libido and fatigue; and less-strong erections can happen with subclinical sugar issues, so I’m testing for that too. But testosterone treatment alone won’t solve the problem with your sex life.” “What do you mean? I really love my wife. I want her to enjoy having sex with me. The best sex we had was when we were first married and I could tell that she was excited about making love.”

DR. KENNETH WOLINER Board Certified Family Physician 9325 Glades Road, Suite 104 Boca Raton, FL 33434 561-314-0950 holisticfamilymed.com “Exactly. But if it’s her satisfaction you’re shooting for, why don’t you find out what she really wants?” Bruce shrugged, “Who could tell what a woman really wants?” “Well for one thing, they don’t like monotony. Your lovemaking sounds as boring as a train schedule. Two minutes of kissing, two minutes of fondling, two minutes of intercourse and two minutes later, you’re asleep.” Bruce whimpered, “It’s worse. I’m always on time.” “When my women patients tell me what makes their lovemaking great, they almost always say, “He’s caring, he’s thoughtful, he ‘gets me’.” Put some thought into it and show her that you care. Buy Sandy some flowers for no other reason except that you love her. Find ways to be spontaneous. And don’t just roll over when you’re done. Take some time to listen to her and help her glow.” “This is great. I really want to make my wife happy, and if this works, I’ll have better sex too. For more reasons than one, I’m glad Sandy made me come to see you.”

UPLIFTING RESULTS ROGER H. STEWART, M.D. Skin Center 6550 North Federal Hwy., Suite 330 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308 (954) 903-0332 SkinCenter.com For over 35 years, Roger H. Stewart, MD has been a pioneer in cosmetic dermatology and skin cancer treatment, employing stateof-the-art technology in his East Fort Lauderdale practice. As we age, our skin continually changes. Over time, wrinkles and uneven color are compounded by a reduction in the resiliency of the skin and changes in the contours of the face. What begins as an apple shape can end up as a pear shape as gravity, heredity, hormones and environmental factors like sun damage come into play. In the past, invasive surgery in the form of a facelift and/or other lift surgeries were the most common solution to tighten loose skin from aging. FDA-approved Ultherapy is a new type of nonsurgical, non-invasive tightening procedure that uses ultrasound and the body’s own natural healing processes to lift, tone, and tighten loose skin on the brow, neck, and under the chin. Unlike surgery, there is no cutting and no needles or recovery period. Ultherapy uses ultrasound to stimulate the deep structural support layers of the skin—including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift—without disturbing

70

the surface of the skin. Using ultrasound, Ultherapy specifically targets the deep, structural skin tissues where collagen is located, working from the inside-out to lift and tighten skin. A smooth hand-piece is placed on your skin and an image of the tissue beneath is projected on a screen, allowing your practitioner to “see” where they will treat your skin. Using the hand-piece, tiny deposits of focused ultrasound energy are delivered at precise depths below the skin. Your body’s response to this energy is to stimulate the growth of fresh, new collagen. The result is a tightening and gradual lifting—or shifting—of the skin back into a more youthful position and form-fitting shape. The procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes, after which you can return to normal activities immediately. Results typically

unfold over the course of 2-3 months, and for up to 6 months in some cases, including a noticeable lifting and tightening of the skin on the neck, under the chin, along the jawline, and on the brow. While ultrasound does not duplicate the results of surgery, many patients are either not ready for a face lift, and/or prefer a more natural looking result. In these cases, Ultherapy provides a noticeable improvement without the cost, risk and downtime of surgery. For more information on Ultherapy including “before & after” treatment photos, visit www.skincenter.com. To set up a free consultation with Roger H. Stewart, M.D. to discuss Ultherapy and/or any of a range of treatment options, call the Skin Center team today at (954) 903-0332.

TIME TO COME OUT OF HIDING? 5 TIPS TO TAKE THE EMOTION OUT OF INVESTING Concerned about the stock market? If so, you’re not alone. In volatile markets, it’s common to feel anxious about investing. However, successful investors know that while weathering market moves isn’t easy, it can be rewarding. To help you keep your emotions in check during uncertain markets, consider the following five steps. 1. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MARKET OPPORTUNITIES. Stock prices fluctuate for a lot of reasons. While past performance is not indicative of future performance, historically stock prices have rebounded from setbacks. In fact, during market lows, you may have the opportunity to add to your portfolio with quality investments at attractive prices. 2. DON’T TRY TO TIME THE MARKET. For investors, trying to outguess the market is not only a stressful strategy; it can also be an expensive one. By moving your portfolio to the sidelines, you might miss a market downturn, but you could also miss a rally. That’s because most of the market’s gains are often clustered into very short time periods. To benefit from the market’s long-term performance, you need to make a plan and stick with it through market ups and downs. Please remember that no investment strategy can guarantee a profit or protect against a loss. 3. DON’T LOSE SIGHT OF YOUR GOALS. Some investors believe they can soften the effects of a market decline by selling off their stocks and buying more conservative investments. This could prove a mistake, especially if you’re investing for long-term financial goals like

retirement. While stock market volatility can be unnerving, stocks historically have outperformed other major asset classes. Of course, past performance does not guarantee future results, and while stocks may have outperformed other asset classes, they also may be more volatile. Investors should carefully consider their ability to invest during volatile periods in the market. 4. MAINTAIN YOUR MIX. During difficult markets, it is inevitable that some of your investments will perform better than others, shifting your portfolio from its original target allocation. That’s why it’s important to review your portfolio periodically and rebalance your holdings as needed to bring your asset allocation back in line with your goals, risk tolerance and timeframe. 5. WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL. A successful long-term investment strategy evolves as your needs and goals change over time. An experienced financial professional can help you take an objective, unemotional approach to investing and keep your overall performance and goals in sight regardless of market ups and downs.

While these strategies won’t completely eliminate the risk associated with the potential of loss that comes with investing or make your investments grow at an even rate, it can help you keep your emotions in check. And as we all know, that’s important because investing can be an emotional rollercoaster.

THE PIRATE REPUBLIC SEAFOOD & GRILL BY RANDI AILEEN PRESS, THE DINING DUCHESSTM

In 1977, Roberto and Claudia Guerios had a 98-foot wooden schooner sailboat built to begin their adventure at sea. They named the schooner the Senhor Das Ilhas (Lord of Islands) and set sail from Brazil. The two spent the next 27 years chartering their sailboat in Tortola during the winter and summers from the Caribbean to Venezuela. During their charters, they met local fisherman who shared meals cooked with local spices. In 2005, Roberto decided to find a permanent home for his family. So he brought his recipes from all over the world to Fort Lauderdale and transformed a neglected building into a beautiful clipper ship bar with a boat dock. Roberto extends his hand out and offers a warm grin as he welcomes us. His gold hoop earrings, one in each ear, and his interesting accent, a mixture from Brazil, Italy, and Greece, captures me as he explains the style of cooking at the Pirate. Every recipe is an original concoction from his travels. Each dish is created from scratch and built with layers of specific spices. The flavor is specific to an area of travel. He explains a trip to St. John that took three times back and forth to create a recipe for chowder. He kept returning back until he mastered the taste. He explains further that fisherman keep things simple when they cook using the most fresh ingredients and spices that translate to great flavor. All the menu items are prepared skillfully

with influences from the Caribbean, South American, Mediterranean, and America. All those years sailing and searching for the right serene harbor eventually had the two locate in South Florida. Pirate’s location is unique and well hidden. A Fort Lauderdale skyline is completely in sight. The water sparkles, pirate flags sway in the wind and tranquility comes over you while dining. Not all treasure is silver and gold. This treasure is edible and is worth walking a few planks to your seat to taste. The bounty is also reasonable for private functions, corporate events or everyday dining. Whether you dine on the main deck

in the open air at a custom made table or under a large canopy, there are great views everywhere. The dock has a lot of space and boaters may tie up for free. Or for your convenience, the Water Taxi has The Pirate Republic as a permanent stop. A few of our favorite items are below. The full menu is large and offers a variety of great options for everyone. If you are adventurous and enjoy seafood, Republic will become a favorite of yours.

St. John’s Lobster Chowder

Roberto and Claudia traveled 550 miles over three days to meet the chef who inspired this chowder in St. John. Served in a bread bowl, the soup is rich and creamy. ($13)

Seafood Moqueca

Tickle your tongue and scrape the plate with this one! Red, green, and yellow peppers, garlic, and onions in a fiery tomato sauce served with a splash of coconut milk is deliciously unique. Served with rice, this meal comes in two sizes. ($29 and $53)

Ubatuba Shrimp

The shrimp are large and sautéed with shallots and finished with the Republic’s special creamy Brazilian Catupiry sauce. The dish is complimented by arugula salad and served with rice. ($24)

Grouper, Anguilla Island, Caribbean Style

The Pirate Rebulic Seafood & Grill 400 SW 3rd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33315 (954) 761-3500 piraterepublicbar.com DINNER NIGHTLY Monday-Thursday 12 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday-Sunday 12 p.m. – 12 a.m.

Grouper fillet is sautéed with shrimp and tossed with fresh tomato, onion and garlic. Green and pink peppercorns give this a strong flavor. The grouper is served with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. Don’t’ miss this style of Caribbean cooking. ($29)

Dulce De Leche

This dessert, served as a small layered cake, is a confection prepared by slowly heating sweetened milk to create a product that derives its taste from caramelized sugar. Literally translated, it means “candy of milk.” ($8)
