FGCU Men’s Basketball: Meet Head Coach Joe Dooley By Laura J. Cummings Gates
reed can be good when it comes to keeping Dunk City on the map. That’s the message from new Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball coach Joe Dooley. “When you have success, one of two things sets in: complacency or greed. And I think greed is a good thing, provided you want to get better,” Dooley told members of the Tiger Bay Club of Southwest Florida during one of his first speaking appearances for FGCU in June. “We want to be greedy in a positive way, because we’ve tasted success. Now it’s time to move on and grow the program.” Local fans are expecting big things from Dooley, who was snatched away from Kansas where he was assistant coach for the last decade in one of the most dominant college basketball programs in the nation. The Jayhawks have won their conference championship for the last nine years, captured the NCAA Tournament title in 2008 and finished second in 2012. “Kansas has been the winningest organization in college basketball

during the last seven years, and coach Dooley has been a big part of that,” noted Tiger Bay Club President Ronald Inge, as he introduced him with the title “Mayor of Dunk City.” Dooley said he welcomes the climate change and the opportunity to lead a young and successful program with a growing national reputation. “When you think about how far we’ve come in such a short period of time, how far can we go?” Dooley asked. “We’re fired up and excited about the opportunity.” FGCU has added some big-name competition to its schedule and may see more television exposure this year as the “hot new school” for basketball. But Dooley says an NCAA tournament appearance is never guaranteed. It will take hard work and maturity. “It’s not as easy to get to the Sweet 16 as some of these guys might think,” he said. “We’re not going to take things for granted. This is a new year and a new challenge.” Although coaching changes always bring emotion, none of FGCU’s players transferred. The Eagles have four returning starters, including Chase Fieler, Bernard Thompson, and Brett Comer. Dooley and his staff also have added two transfers: MarcEddy Norelia from Tulane and Julian DeBose from Rice University. “We’ve added two nice pieces, and I think that will really help our program,” he said. Dooley has kept the highly successful coaching staff of Marty Richter, Michael Fly and Joey Cantens, plus made some additions to accommodate the growing program.
“Those guys haven’t screwed anything up yet,” he joked. The coach plans to further FGCU’s energetic and entertaining style of play with emphasis on improving rebounds. “If we can’t stop them, we can’t run,” Dooley said. “The first thing is toughness, and that will come with maturity.” FGCU will kick off its season by helping Nebraska open its new facility in Lincoln. North Carolina State and South Florida are also on the schedule. Although expectations are high for the 2013-14 season, Dooley says the road to success is traveled one game at a time. He’s making no public predictions on another Sweet 16 appearance. “Nebraska’s our opening game, so we’ll worry about Nebraska,” Dooley said. “After that, we’ll worry about the next team. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself.”

Estero High School: Top Athletes of 2013 A look back at last school year – and a look ahead at this one By Laura J. Cummings Gates
hile football and basketball may draw the largest crowds, it’s the Estero Girls Cross Country team that outshines the rest when it comes to dominating a sport, both regionally and at the state level. Coached by Estero High School Athletic Director Jeff Sommer, these super runners captured the school’s third straight state championship last season. That’s a lot of bling on the dainty, manicured fingers of the senior athletes, who now have three championship rings. “It’s been a nice run,” says a proud Sommer, as the girls presented him and EHS Principal George Clover with their own super-sized rings, marking the three championships. Sommer proudly wears his in place of his wedding band. “I told my wife, ‘Women are easier to get than a state

championship,’” he jokes. “Winning three in a row is hard to do.” Not only did his girls go undefeated for the last three years, no other team even came close to threatening their third title. The Wildcats won by a whopping 96 points in Tallahassee. Sommer credits the team’s dominance to “training like an animal” at 5 a.m. before school begins. “That sets us apart from the other teams,” says the coach, who preaches the Three D’s: Discipline, Desire and Dedication. Here we honor some of Estero High School’s Most Outstanding Athletes of 2013 – and for those who are returning, we look ahead.
BETHANY JENKINS cross country, senior
KATY GLADIS SOLIS cross country and track Class of 2013 Standing just 4-feet-9-inches in stature, Katy Gladis Solis has been a mighty endurance runner for the Wildcats. Not only did she make it through high school on as little as four hours of sleep at night, she graduated at the top of her class with a 4.64 GPA. This fall, she’s heading to Ole Miss on a full athletic scholarship, and she’s studying to become a pediatrician. Season Highlights: Broke 18 seconds in a 5K at the state cross country meet in 2012, finishing in 17:58 for runner-up. Posted a personal best of 10:55 in a two-mile race at the Florida Relays 2013. How do you mentally prepare for meets? At meets, we’re not the most serious team. Our team is different. We just like goofing off before the race and not thinking about it. What keeps you going during tough times, on and off the track? I keep motivated by having a positive mind and attitude. I have always been short and people have always said I couldn’t do anything because of it, and that drives me to do my best.
What keeps you motivated to get up and run before dawn? Looking at my rings and wanting another, as well as the support of my team. I’d love to make it a clean sweep with a win my senior year. Why do you love the sport? Running clears my head, and it’s a good way to stay in shape, so I can eat. I’m a junk food junkie! Why do you like being a Wildcat? I like the randomness that happens in the locker room, plus all the support and fun memories I have now.
committed to the University of Arizona, extending his identification as a Wildcat. He plans to visit the campus in July for the grand opening of the university’s new stadium. Following last year’s season, Estero Football Coach Rich Dombroski left to coach at Immokalee. During his stint at Estero, Dombroski turned EHS’s long-standing losing streak around, taking the team to the playoffs last fall. Golden Gate head coach Mark Jackson is replacing Dombroski next season, and players are hoping to continue their newfound winning record. Season highlight: Making the playoffs. “We were losing to Lehigh in the fourth quarter. Jason Correll went deep and scored in the last minutes of the game, and the sideline went crazy. We won the game to make the playoffs.” What do you think Coach Jackson will bring to Estero football? He has a very fast-paced offense. I like his philosophies. He likes to throw the ball a lot. What motivates you to give your all on the field? My motivation is my ultimate goal of playing college football and eventually in the NFL. I’m just trying to be better this next season and help the team out as much as possible.

NICK NATARO football tight end/wide receiver, senior Heading into his senior year, Nick Nataro has already verbally
basketball point guard, sophomore Margens Desire came from a basketball family, picking up the game in second grade. Then tragedy struck, forcing him away from the court for two years. His older brother, Eddie, suddenly collapsed while playing basketball and died at age 17. After that, his distraught father forbade Margens to play. “I prayed to God that my dad would let me play basketball again,” Margens recalls. “When he said, ‘Yes,’ I was so happy.” Margens dedicated himself to practicing eight hours a day, making up for lost time. Now he is one of Estero’s top players and is looking forward to a better season, after ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM | AUGUST 2013

a rebuilding year with a new head coach, Lee Peters. Peters was the first Boys Basketball coach at Estero from 1987-2000, leading the Wildcats to their only district title in 1998. He hopes to restore Estero basketball to a winning program. How do you think the team will improve next season? We didn’t really have chemistry this year, but next season, we have guys who hang out with each other and have more chemistry. Favorite team memory? When I shot a buzzer-beater in summer camp. We were down by two points, and I hit a three. What keeps you at the top of your game? I practice every day because I want to become better than anyone else.
I got hurt and was out for the rest of the season. I drove it down the left field line, it hit the fence, and I was fast enough to get around. It was my first home run. Who are your role models in the sport? Jackie Traina and Amanda Josie. They were seniors my freshman year, when our team was the best. I played against Jackie and hit off her, and I caught for Josie. I’ve also been able to play with some of my best friends. Why do you love the sport? I’m in love with the game. If I am having a bad day, I go there and I forget all about everything else that’s going on. I’m gonna bust my butt no matter what.

volleyball, juniors The Estero volleyball team recorded a strong season, with many of the top players returning as seniors next year. They made it to the district championship and lost a heartbreaker against Lemon Bay. “It was pretty upsetting when the season ended,” says Christina Glase, who will return as a senior. “It was so close of a game, it was hard to move on without the win. But I’m looking forward to next season.” Favorite team memory: A team trip to play in Sarasota before heading to Busch Gardens for some fun and bonding. “We laughed so much on the ride up there,” Case says. baseball shortstop, senior Following the 2011-12 season, Estero lost 10 graduating seniors. Last season was a rebuilding time, with a group of talented sophomores, like Ryan Keegan, stepping up. The team surprised by making a run to the state championship game. Coach Frank Turco led the Wildcats to a 75-12 record in the three years before his seniors left. Now he has demonstrated his talent for team rebuilding. Estero faced Ponte Vedra during the final week and lost. It wasn’t a fairy tale ending for this Cinderella story, but the Wildcats brought a winning streak into the title game. Favorite team memory? We took a road trip to Orlando last year and played two games against teams that were really good and beat both of them. The downtime in the hotel gave us time to spend together off the field. What do you admire most about Coach Turco? Coach Turco definitely knows what he’s talking about. He can relate to every one of us in some way.

Go Gators? No Gators! When it comes to college football, Estero goes Midwestern By Laura J. Cummings Gates
s we kick off college football season, alumni and fans will flock to local sports bars for the big games. While Florida schools have a following here, it’s the Midwestern schools of the Big Ten that really draw a crowd. The University of Iowa’s Paradise Iowa Club is one of the largest in the region, with 320 members. “Our tag line is: ‘From the cornfields of Iowa to the beaches of Florida, it’s GREAT to be a Hawkeye!’” says club president Justin McBride. “We get together for every football and basketball game. Our ‘clubhouse’ is RonDao’s Pizzeria in Fort Myers. We have crowds up to 130-plus for some games.” Six years ago, the Notre Dame Club of Southwest Florida adopted RonDao’s as its official game watch location as well. On the rare occasion the two schools play on the same night, Notre Dame takes one side and Iowa gets the other. “We get the walls just vibrating,” boasts Notre Dame game watch coordinator Dick Schweers. For the Alabama game last season, Notre Dame packed more than 200 fans into the large back room filled with TVs, including one giant screen. RonDao’s owners Gina and Louie Rondao love hosting fan clubs and even opened early for a Notre Dame game against Dublin that aired at 9 a.m. The Notre Dame Club hosts a student sendoff party for local Notre Dame students on Aug. 10 at a board member’s residence on Fort Myers Beach. The first game of the season is Aug. 31 against Temple.

Ohio State also kicks off its season Aug. 31 with a televised game against Buffalo. Members of the Southwest Florida Buckeye Club will be gathered at Fade Away Sports Bar & Grill in Fort Myers to cheer on their team. “Our big fall events are our game watch parties for every Ohio State football game,” says club president John Pilarski. “We also have a big tailgate party before we beat Michigan every year!” This fall, the Buckeyes face Michigan at home on Nov. 30. Be assured, the U-M Club of Southwest Florida also will be gathering to cheer on the Wolverines. The U-M Club has more than 1,000 members in the region of Collier, Lee and Hendry counties. For game watch parties, they gather at Tarpon Cove Yacht and Racquet Club in Fort Myers and Jack’s Bait Shack in Naples. The local club also organizes speakers, a scholarship dinner and a theater night. During baseball season, the Wolverines will travel south to Estero for a game against Florida Gulf Coast University. The Northwestern Club of Naples organizes one event in Southwest Florida each month, including an annual tailgate party with Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald in the spring. All of the local Big Ten clubs also get together several times a year through the Southwest Florida Big Ten Council (which has adopted Notre Dame). The council organizes a Big Ten Night for Miracle Baseball, an annual BBQ, participation in the Edison Festival of Lights and a wine-tasting business mixer. “We have partnered with FGCU in the past when Big Ten teams come down to play here, and we also have partnered with the Senior Friendship Centers to help deliver food to needy seniors in the community,” says Iowa Club’s McBride, who also organizes the Big Ten Council. “We encourage each Big Ten school to take one month so we can have a full year of coverage.” Local clubs include university alumni, as well folks who simply feel a connection to the school. They’ll be gathering all over Southwest Florida this fall for camaraderie, philanthropy and game-time fun.

New at FGCU Basketball made headlines last school year. So what’s in store this year? By Laura J. Cummings Gates
lorida Gulf Coast University will welcome about 14,200 students to campus this month as fall classes resume at the growing university. FGCU is heading into its 17th year, and the university has logged much success in its short history. While the formerly double-digit growth rate is intentionally being slowed, student enrollment continues to rise each year, with an even greater bump expected in 2014 – spurred by the Eagles’ NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament success. “Whatever gets them to our front door is good,” says FGCU President Wilson Bradshaw. “When they come here, they will find a very successful, comprehensive university with great academic programs, great athletic programs and student organizations.” Along with a new men’s basketball coach – former Kansas Assistant Coach Joe Dooley – FGCU students, staff, and community members will see a few more changes on campus this year. A new pavilion on the Great Lawn in front of the library will be dedicated next month in honor of military veterans. The American flag, Florida flag, and POW/ MIA flag will fly proudly above the new gathering area at Veterans Pavilion. “It was student-proposed and student-funded,” Bradshaw says of the $226,000 pavilion earmarked by Student Government. “They have been unwavering in their dedication to get this done.” Veterans Pavilion is one of many examples of FGCU’s focus on community. Students were also the driving force behind the nationally recognized FGCU Food Forest, a student-run community garden for learning, as well as gleaning fresh produce. Additionally, students support their new campus food pantry by collecting nonperishables at athletic events. “It provides a much needed source of food when they run out of money and have transient needs,” Bradshaw notes. No new academic buildings are being built this year, as the university’s chiller plant has reached its capacity. Creative scheduling, including a high percentage of online courses, allows the university to expand academic offerings using its current space, Bradshaw says. The university has increased the number of baccalaureate degrees awarded in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) by 232 percent over the last four years, outpacing every other

This year, the university is adding 20 new offices, remodeling Merwin Hall, and completing a pool for the South Village freshman complex. Another 500-bed residence hall, Eagle Hall, is scheduled to open in Fall 2014. The university also is welcoming increased funding from the Florida Legislature. Last year’s $5.2 million budget cut has been restored, with FGCU receiving an additional $6.5 million to enhance student success. Those funds will be used to offer more career services and enhance honors programs and the Accelerated Collegiate Experience for high schoolers taking courses at FGCU. The following day, they were in Georgia watching both the FGCU men’s and women’s basketball teams win in the Atlantic Sun semifinals. The men took home the championship title the next day and went on to make it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. “People recognize the institution now,” Bradshaw says, “and it’s very gratifying.”
