HAPPY NOVEMBER, ESTERO!!! Who says we don’t have seasons? How many of you felt the change from summer to fall? And just in time, on October 12th, to usher in the opening of the Florida Everblades hockey season! And don’t these cooler, crisp mornings feel great? While some parts of the country have many changes to their weather and vegetation in the fall, we can tell it has arrived simply by the temperature of the Gulf and the car carriers making their annual trek into town. We already have a little more traffic and our shops, stores and restaurants are slightly busier (Hooray!). Sunrise comes a little later and sunset a little earlier. And this time of year there is so much vying for our attention!! The World Series is running into the month of November for the first time. College football is nearing the end of their regular season and FGCU men’s and women’s basketball seasons start up in just a week or two!! You can read about what to expect from Coach Andy Enfield and his men’s team as they head into his second year at the helm!! And Coach Karl Smesko has been challenged with a younger women’s team this year, which should prove to be exciting. Nevertheless, there are high expectations of both teams as their seasons begin. I hope you will take time to attend a game or two and help us root on the “home” team!! Of course, it won’t be long before the holiday shopping season ramps up and gets going full throttle!!! The local malls are anticipating a robust retail season. Check out what exciting things are planned during the holidays, complete with a listing of activities and special events taking place at Coconut Point, Miromar Outlets and the Gulf Coast Town Center. You can also learn about the latest trend in restaurant foods as we take

a look at those involved in “Farm to Table” dining. And our restaurant feature is on Bistro 41 in the Bell Tower Shops in south Ft. Myers. Chef Heath Higginbotham presents an extraordinary array of tastes, textures and flavors. You’ll want to put this one on your “to do” list!!! And of course we have a calendar of events that is chocked full of possibilities. Again, on a personal note, in a few weeks most of us will gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving. I don’t know of any community that should have more to be thankful for than Estero. I, for one, am still proud to be living in the United States of America, the greatest country in the world! I am thankful for the many men and women in uniform who are trained so well to protect us and our interests world-wide and to preserve our freedoms. I am also thankful for so many who have contributed in some way to the success of Estero Lifestyle Magazine and carrying us on into our third year. We have tremendously supportive advertisers who deserve

your attention, as they make an effort to help make Estero the paradise that it is. And finally, as always I am thankful for you –our readers. I am constantly humbled by your warm and enthusiastic embrace of our efforts. It is such an honor to represent the community of Estero. I hope that each of you will take time during the month to reflect, in your own way, on what you are most thankful for. Good health, true friends, loving family or special opportunities – take time to be thankful. And tell the ones that you love, that you do! Your thoughts are always welcome. And you can follow us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/gary. esterolifestyle . And as always, “Enjoy the Lifestyle”

MUD RUN CRAZE

MUSIC

MUMFORD AND SONS

After their smash debut Sigh No More, which won British Album of the Year and Billboard Music Awards Top Alternative Album among other awards, Mumford & Sons have a new release Babel. Mumford & Sons uses bluegrass and folk instrumentation, such as a banjo, upright bass, mandolin and piano, played with a rhythmic style based in alternative rock and folk. The foursome, including Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, “Country” Winston Marshall, and Ted Dwane – who all play a variety of instruments, bonded over their shared love of “rootsy” music. Look for Babel on the charts, as the band already played on Saturday Night Live to an appreciative crowd and have launched a new tour – U.S. dates will be announced.

It’s just what it sounds like – a mud run! Runners slog through miles of mud and confront a variety of obstacles (which make you climb, jump over fire pits, crawl, swing and sometimes crash), that are most definitely going to test your strength and endurance. Also referred to as Adventure Racing, these events are anything but normal – one event in Florida even has zombies on the course attacking racers. The races are designed to be tough but exhilarating and mostly fun! They’re usually 5k in length and have their rewards – like free beers at the finish line and many have all-out bashes following the races with live music, food and drink. They even have shower stalls set up so racers can clean off and change into new clothes. Speaking of clothing, it’s smart to be prepared for one of these races with trail running sneakers and water proof socks made of high-tech fabric, shorts and shirts that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy and maybe some type of support and protection for your knees and elbows, like Ace bandages or some other sort of wrap to protect them while you are crawling and climbing. Also, don’t go alone; take a few friends and form a team. Run together, help each other when the obstacles get demanding and cheer for each other. Some teams even dress up in goofy outfits like dresses over top of their racing clothes or wear serious military style gear. health & wellness HEALTHY THANKSGIVING SNACKS

THANKSGIVING EDITION It’s November and that means Thanksgiving is drawing near – with its glorious foods tempting family and friends to pig out. But it’s possible to eat healthy during thanksgiving. It just takes a little willpower and a fresh approach when preparing the meal.

5

TIPS FOR A HEALTHIER THANKSGIVING

Turkey: When it comes to eating turkey stick with the white turkey meat with the skin removed, and take it easy on the gravy. A three ounce portion will save you 50 calories and four grams of fat compared to dark meat. Stuffing: Avoid white bread stuffing. Use multi-grain bread or whole wheat. And replace the chicken broth with low sodium broth. Also, don’t be afraid to add some fruit and toasted nuts to the stuffing. Cranberry sauce: Check out homemade cranberry sauce recipes. They tend to have much less sugar than canned cranberries Mashed potatoes: Use skim milk or low sodium chicken broth instead of whole milk or cream when whipping the potatoes, and cut down on the butter. Potatoes have a wonderful flavor; they don’t need a half stick of butter. Or make sweet potatoes. Dessert: Pumpkin pie is a staple on Thanksgiving and it is surprisingly healthy when compared to other desserts and it is loaded with beta carotene. Blueberry and Cherry pie are also good choices.

GO TAKE A HIKE It doesn’t have to be a hike, but after you’re done eating and cleaning up after your Thanksgiving feast, it’s a great time to take a walk. A nice relaxed walk with family and friends is an excellent way to wrap up your festivities; it’s not only exercise it’s a bonding experience.

12

NOVEMBER 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

Most people think of Thanksgiving as an all day feast with hors d’oeuvres and snacks followed by the main meal. Try these healthy snacks to cut down on your caloric intake: Fresh fruit: An array of colorful fresh fruit such as strawberries, slices of apples and pears, melon and grapes create a beautiful presentation – and they’re tasty. Cheeses: Try low fat cheeses, such as cheddar and jack cheese. Or you could put out some brie to pair with the fruit. Dips: Make your favorite dips but use fat free Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. And instead of fatty chips, cut up and serve fresh vegetables for the dip. Nuts: Nuts have abundant amounts of protein, fiber, healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. Try walnuts, almonds, pistachios and pecans.

MATTERS

TURKEY CONTROVERSY: DEEP FRYING Some turkey enthusiasts believe that deep frying a turkey is the best possible way to keep the bird moist and delicious. But deep frying food is a no-no, right? Well, if you use 100% peanut oil you could be limiting the poor health impact of frying. The American Heart Association says, “Most of the fats you eat should be the “better” fats – monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats.” Vegetable oils (canola oil, olive oil, peanut oil, and sunflower oil) are recommended sources of these fats. A 4-ounce serving of roasted turkey has 241 calories and 12 grams of fat while a 4-ounce serving of turkey deep-fried in peanut oil comes in at 253 calories and under 14 grams of fat, a slight difference. You can purchase turkey deep fryers at Amazon, Home Depot and Target.

Connecting With Your Kids Through Sports And School BY DAVID SHERMAN

As I spoke about in last months’ column, kids connect best with you when you, the parent, are actually enjoying yourself as much as they are. I have two boys and through coaching all of their sports, we have developed a bond greater than I could have hoped. You don’t actually have to be the head coach. You can be the assistant or the score keeper and the snack mom. Just being at the field and supporting the kids and learning what to do from the coaches to help the child do better for the next game will show enough interest to bond. Children are very perceptive and are far more aware of your involvement than you think. Having the parents, if possible, at the field as often as possible will create a good sense of family unity even if the parents are divorced. Those are some of the best memories I have as a kid. I have coached 13 seasons of sports so far and always get emotional when a kid performs well and the first thing they do is turn around to the stands to see if their family saw it, like clockwork. My 8-year-old actually started his own blog called AJs’ World of Sports where he documents his sports achievements. Another great way to connect is through their school. This needs to be done sooner than later because the

14

teenagers may not be too thrilled with mom or dad being around their friends. I try and volunteer in the lunch room, clinic and field trips pretty regularly. The way my boys’ faces light up when they come in for lunch and I am there is priceless. They are actually happy that I am there and show me off to their friends. Like I said the teenagers may sing a different song. It is also a great way to stay connected for parents who are divorced and don’t have the kids for a week at a time. That is my situation and the boys never go two days without seeing me because of either coaching or school activities. I think because of the involvement in the kids’ lives at an early age, you can get and stay connected as the children get older and keep those lines of communication as open as possible. ELEGANCE with an edge N

amed after the famous corner at the end of the straight-away at Le Mans, where Bentley vehicles have roared to six victories, the Mulsanne exhibits Bentleys sporting pedigree and its unmatched flair for luxury. When first introducing this vehicle Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen of Bentley remarked: “The challenge we set our engineers was to create a new, grand Bentley that would stand as the pinnacle of British luxury motoring, offering the world’s most exclusive driving experience. They have responded to this challenge with real passion, and the result is a luxury grand tourer that sets new standards in terms of comfort, effortless performance and handcrafted refinement – the very qualities for which Bentley is renowned.“ And new to the 2013 model is a standard ultra-slim, tilt-opening sunroof with tinted glass, which draws light into the cabin. The sunroof is also equipped with a color-matched Alcantara blind that silently closes at the touch of a button.

Other standard features on the Bentley Mulsanne include: s 6.7 liter twin-turbocharged V8, producing 505 hp and 752 lbs. ft. torque s Drive Dynamic Control: four driver-selectable settings – Three standard modes: Bentley, Sport and Comfort and a fourth mode “Custom” allows the driver to tune the system to his or her driving style s Paintwork applied and polished by hand to a mirror-finish: A choice of 28 paint colors customized for the Mulsanne s Hand-selected leather to all trimmed surfaces including seating, console, door panels and more

18

NOVEMBER 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

s Front seats with 12-way electrical adjustment, including lumbar support, two memory positions and adjustable heating s 8” high-resolution color screen to display “infotainment” and vehicle systems information, which is automatically concealed behind a veneered panel when not in use s Central Multi Media Interface (MMI) rotary controller with convenience keys for instant access to the main system of menus: Navigation, Telephone, Radio, Media, (including DVD’s when fitted) Tone, Information and Car systems s Satellite navigation system integrated in car’s hard disc, ensuring fast route calculation. Four map configurations in system including 3-D topographical maps and city views and day/night display modes s Mulsanne audio system with 14 speakers – two subwoofers, powered through six channels with digital sound processing s Full iPod and MP3 player compatibility including full-color album art display and video playback s Telephone system with Bluetooth wireless connectivity

But that’s not all; Bentley is also introducing the new Mulsanne Mulliner edition. This Mulsanne is a distinctive and sportier interpretation, blending a range of eye-catching design features such as unique painted or polished 21-inch wheels with race-derived, titanium fasteners; a pair of sweeping wing vents made from cast, polished stainless steel that duplicate Bentley’s “Flying B” emblem, which emphasize the effect of speed and movement on this physically dynamic car; intricate Diamond Quilted leather on the front and rear seats and door casings; and the Drive Dynamics Control system that offers the “Sport” setting providing improved steering accuracy, grip on the road and body control. Both versions share the same engine, which propels them from 0-60 in just 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 184 mph. Bentley also announced that all Mulsanne models offer the option of “an exquisitely detailed, Bentley designed, luxury bottle cooler and rear cabin storage area with space for two full-size Champagne bottles in a canted position.” Included with this bottle cooler are three hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal champagne flutes, created by British designer, David Redman of London. And now this singular, grand touring Mulsanne lineup will be available to residents of South Florida. Sales Manager (Bentley/Rolls Royce Motor Cars/Aston Martin Fort Lauderdale) Howard Schwartz, remarked, “The new 2013 standard sunroof Mulsanne model will be available in November for show and test drive.” Asked if the Mulsanne had any competitors in the car market Mr. Schwartz replied: “The Mulsanne is at the top of the Bentley lineup. The only real competitor to the Mulsanne would be the Rolls Royce Phantom – the Mulsanne is Bentley’s answer to the Phantom.” For more information regarding the Mulsanne and the Mulsanne Mulliner edition contact Howard Schwartz at 954-779-2009 or email at hschwartz@holmanauto.com LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | NOVEMBER 2012

Farm to Table “Farm to table” is the hottest concept to hit the restaurant world since chefs discovered their deep love of all things pork. But the cutting-edge idea of serving only foods from a 100 mile radius is most certainly marinated in history. By Julie Glenn

After all, it is how we humans lived for centuries. It was only a few decades ago when processed foods started to make life easier for the newly two-income-dependent families of the fifties. In the middle of the last century we reached a gastronomic turning point: we lost hours of our days to additional work and the factories that employed us started making food products in the name of convenience. Somewhere along the way agrarian amnesia allowed hundreds of miles to come between the farm that produces our food and the table where we consume it. But now the “farm to table” movement aims to shorten that distance and get local food on the plate. There is a particular

challenge to this culinary concept in southwest Florida, but there are a few restaurants in the Estero area willing to take on the task. When Joe and Donna Scalli decided to turn their successful wine bar at Coconut Point into a full service restaurant called Southfork Grille, they weren’t really looking for a trendy concept. “I just thought we should do things the way they ought to be done. Get products from as close to here as we can and they’ll taste better. That’s what I’m after - having the food taste good,” says Joe; “I didn’t realize I was being hip.” Chuckling at the absurdity of simple food being a national foodie trend, Joe and Donna talk about one of their regulars.

LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | NOVEMBER 2012

21

“She came in after we changed the menu and pulled me aside,” recalls Donna. “She says ‘I don’t know what you’re doing differently, but what I just had was amazing. What did you change?’” Donna laughs. “That’s what we want. We’re not trying to prove any point or make any big statement. We’re just trying to bring in the best food we can find to make the best dishes we can.” This is why they hired Chef Philip Donall whose passion for local ingredients borders on obsession. His joyful eyes sparkle as his hands pull apart the two semi-circles of a watermelon radish he just pulled from the cooler and sliced. “Look at that. Isn’t that beautiful?” He doesn’t wait for a response, “It’s amazing. That came from a producer a little north of here in Fort Myers. Such a cool place,” he beams. He and the Scalli’s had just gone to tour Rabbit Run Farm which grows

“There is a lot going on right here so we will be able to be mainly local thanks to the people working so hard to make produce possible down here.”

22

a fair percentage of the produce in Philip’s kitchen. “They grow everything hydroponically because down here it’s the only way to get anything to grow in the hot summers,” he says. Being in the extreme climate of southwest Florida sets obvious limits on what can be gotten locally and forces many “locavores” to expand their definition of local. Generally, the theory is that food should come from no further than 100 miles away. But, for Estero that would rule out the apple and a number of other fruits and vegetables. Even tougher, restaurants adhering to the 100 mile rule would be deeply impacted right in the main course: meat. Jeff Mitchel is preparing to open a new farm-to-table inspired restaurant in December called The Local at AirportPulling and Pine Ridge Roads. He found a local beef producer who raises grassfed cattle north of Fort Myers. “But to be served in a restaurant, the beef has to be processed through a USDA certified slaughterhouse. The closest one we could find is in Ocala. So we would buy the animal here, ship it to Ocala, and then ship it back. It completely

negates the intention of minimizing our carbon footprint. So, no, we can’t do the 100 mile limit for some things,” Jeff explains. The USDA certification is required for any purveyor selling animal products to restaurants. Fish will figure heavily at The Local as there are a number of certified fishmongers selling the Gulf’s finest. And of course local produce will rotate onto the menu as the seasons and availability change. “We’ve found so many people locally producing so much -- even cheese. It is surprising,” beams Jeff. “There is a lot going on right here so we will be able to be mainly local thanks to the people working so hard to make produce possible down here. It just tastes better in most cases, and you’re helping out the guy growing baby spinach and kale up the street by using your buying power locally.” Jeff’s restaurant, the Local, is slated to open in mid December at Airport Pulling and Pine Ridge Road. Southfork Grille (formerly the Grape) is serving local-ingredient driven dishes for lunch and dinner at Coconut Point Mall.

Estero’s Grand Dame Turns 100 BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS

While newer residents to Estero might not know Mimi Straub, the old timers credit this small but spirited woman with ensuring the community stays connected with its unique past. As founder of the Estero Historical Society, Straub brought a team of passionate volunteers together to preserve history as the community was experiencing rapid development. Today the Society carries on the work Straub began in 1999, and members are preparing to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Grand Dame of Estero. “She is ‘Ms. Estero,’” said Society President Jean Pryal. “I love her dearly, and I wish she could live forever. She’s been an inspiration to me.” Born on Nov. 5, 1912, Straub grew up in Carlisle, Penn. The daughter of a minister, she was introduced to community service at an early age. Eileen Galvin first met Straub when Straub was a docent at Koreshan State Historic Site, where she volunteered for 12 years. “Mimi was a very dedicated person in doing things that would last, and she was so personable she could engage anyone in conversation,” Galvin recalled. She will always remember the night Staub talked a Florida Gulf Coast University official into giving the Society a room to store documents and artifacts at the university. “She really was charming...and still is,” Galvin

said. Mary Ann Weenan, a past president of the Historical Society, recalled the Society’s first fundraiser, a yard sale held in front of Mimi’s house in Estero River Heights, which netted $23. Weenan calls Straub “the force behind everything.” She pushed to have a map made of Estero and commissioned a book on the history of early Estero. “She knew everybody and anybody,” Weenan said. “She’s a little, teeny lady, but if you sit and talk to her for ten minutes, she grows in stature.” Intelligent, grand and gracious are words often used to describe Straub. “She’s a leading lady in Estero,” said Zelda “Sis” Newberry, who has known Straub for 30 years. “She’s a well educated, well spoken lady. She’s still sharp as a tack. She’s an inspiration in my life and so many more.” LP

Estero Boutique Evelyn & Arthur’s Owner and Buyer…Featured In “I Am Ming Wang” Look-Book Collection BY KEVIN LANE

In addition to the Evelyn and Arthur boutique at 23106 Fashion Drive, Suite 129 in Estero, owners Adrianne & Fred Weissman have seven other stores in Florida and a fast growing e-commerce business… Like a lot of retailing entrepreneurs, Adrianne honed her fashion merchandising skills as a buyer for a major department store. In her case, the store was Macy’s in New York City. She also coordinated aspects of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Adrianne is the daughter of the store founders, Evelyn and Arthur Lewis, who in 1984 retired to Palm Beach, Florida. Evelyn quickly realized that her New York wardrobe didn’t fit her new lifestyle of sunny skies, majestic beaches, lavish golf courses and crystal blue waters. So, she and Arthur retired from retirement and created an apparel store designed to fit REAL women… featuring clothes that are modern, but not edgy; stylish but not faddish. Today, the stores continue the traditions of the founders, carrying merchandise that is colorful and catering to the local market, providing a fine mix of contemporary and resort clothing for the stylish woman. Adrianne is also the buyer. She, along with her husband Fred, who plays an integral role in the company, and their incredible team; work tirelessly to bring great style and service to their customers. “Ming Wang is one of our most popular lines, designed to wear – and last,” Adrianne said. “The pieces are crafted with a specialized yarn so that the entire collection is wrinkle-free, machine washable, fade-resistant, travel friendly… and a comfortable fit.” Ashley Pogue, an accessories buyer and assistant apparel buyer with Evelyn and Arthur, echoes Adrianne’s enthusiasm for the line, saying “…you get that dressy, fun look without feeling uncomfortable. It’s easy to wear but you look like a million bucks.” Adrianne and Ashley were chosen to be part of the 2012-2013 “I Am Ming Wang” look-book, the primary

marketing tool that showcases the collection. “The models in our look-books are real women who represent a range of generations, ethnicities, and sizes, and like Adrianne and Ashley, embody the essence of the Ming Wang brand through their confidence, motivation and poise, as well as inner and outer beauty,” Ms. Wang explained. Adrianne also oversees the company’s extensive charitable outreach. For more than 30 years, she has been personally involved with Temple Israel, helping to ensure that the Temple makes an impact in the community. Since 1995, members of the congregation have cooked and served dinner once a month as well as the Christmas meal every year for St. George’s Soup Kitchen. She’s a Board Member of Palm Beach Habilitation and is active in organizations that support breast cancer research. Visit www.evelynandarthur.com or call (239) 9494110. LP

Eagles Well Poised for Upcoming Mens Basketball Season BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS After making it to the championship game of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament in the Eagles’ first year of postseason eligibility, the Florida Gulf Coast University Men’s Basketball team is gaining national attention as a rising program to watch. Led by Andy Enfield, who enters his second season as head coach, the Eagles are getting noticed as a team on the fast track to collegiate basketball success. The Eagles have set a challenging schedule, beginning with a Nov. 9 away game at Virginia Commonwealth. The home opener against Miami is set for Nov. 13. The Eagles also will face Duke for the first time in

32

team history as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis holiday tournament, which will be broadcast live on ESPNU Nov. 18. “Everyone’s excited to play against Duke,” said senior Sherwood Brown, one of just two seniors who led the Eagles in scoring and rebounds last season. The Eagles have gained momentum in preseason play, going 3-0 against Bahamian professional teams this summer. They averaged nearly 40 percent on three-pointers using the international line, which is more than a foot further from the hoop. “We’re optimistic about our early season games because we had a terrific summer, and a very productive trip to the Bahamas,” Enfield said during a recent preseason scrimmage. “We had an amazing experience to see a different culture and bond as a team.” Named one of the nation’s top recruiters during his previous position as an assistant coach at Florida State, Enfield has been on the road this summer assembling what Michael Rogner of Bloguin.com calls “the best recruiting class in the Atlantic Sun.” Although the team is young, the Eagles have all five of their starters returning. The team is deeper and older than they were last year, Enfield noted. “We think we have enough basketball talent on our roster to compete with anyone on our schedule,” he said. “Our goal is to be on the hunt for a league championship.” Returning starters include sophomores Brett Comer and Bernard Thompson, both named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team last season. Comer led the league in assists while Thompson

ranked third in the league in steals and posted impressive stats in rebounding and scoring. Eric McKnight, a 6-foot-9 transfer from Iowa State, is eligible for play this year while two other transfers, Nate Hicks (Georgia Tech) and Jamail Jones (Marquette) -- a former top-100 recruit -- will aid the team in practice as they wait for their eligibility to kick in next season. “It’s a pretty deep team and we all get along, so I think we’re going to do good this year,” said senior Eddie Murray. Like Brown, he’s hoping for a conference championship and a NCAA tournament bid to cap off his final “We’re optimistic about our early year at FGCU. It seems season games because we had a much more realistic goal now than when he a terrific summer, and a very entered the program productive trip to the Bahamas, four years ago. We had an amazing experience to “There’s definitely a different feel to the see a different culture and bond program from my first as a team.” year to now,” Murray

noted. “Coach Enfield definitely came in with a positive attitude. There’s a winning atmosphere here. You can feel it.” FGCU is ranked third in the preseason by Athlon Sports, behind Mercer and USC Upstate. Last year’s A-Sun champ, Belmont, has joined the Ohio Valley Conference. Enfield said he has “great respect” for the Atlantic Sun Conference, adding the overall talent level of the league has strengthened tremendously. He sees a growing fan base from the university and the Fort Myers-Estero community which adds excitement to home games and a desire to avoid letting those fans down. “We feel we play an uptempo and exciting style of basketball,” Enfield said. “We’d like our basketball program to grow as the school grows, and we’d like to build a tradition here where the students, faculty and the community are enthusiastic about FGCU basketball.” The home opener against Miami is scheduled for November 13 at 7:05 p.m. at Alico Arena. ENSURING YOUR INHERITED IRA GIFT WILL BE WELL RECEIVED T. JOHN COSTELLO, ESQ. Wills, Trusts and Estates Attorney Kelley Kronenberg 12486 Brantley Commons Court Fort Myers, Florida 33907 Phone: (239) 332-0283 tjcostello@kelleykronenberg.com http://estateplanning.kelleykronenberg.com An IRA can be one of the most valuable gifts you leave your children – they have the potential to obtain tax-deferred growth on your account for many years after your death. And thanks to a Florida law passed in 2011, it is now clear that inherited IRAs will enjoy the same creditor protection as they did during the original owner’s life. Unfortunately, the complicated and often confusing rules governing IRAs prevent many family members from obtaining the tax deferral benefit and cause the entire account to become taxable immediately after the original owner’s death. The most important step in guaranteeing that your family can enjoy the tax-deferred growth and stretch out the distributions over their life expectancy is making sure your beneficiary

36

designations are correct. Only certain persons or trusts qualify and if you fail this step, there is little chance your intended beneficiaries will be able fix the problem. Things could get worse if you forget to name a beneficiary – your IRA custodian’s policy will likely require a distribution to your estate, which would accelerate taxes, force a probate, and potentially expose the entire account to the creditors of your estate. It is a good idea to review beneficiary designations on all of your accounts, including life insurance, every few years. A non-spouse beneficiary that inherits an IRA must also be sure to have the account retitled correctly. For example, acceptable titles include “IRA f/b/o John Doe as beneficiary of Jane Doe,” and “Jane Doe, Deceased [date of death] IRA f/b/o John Doe, Beneficiary.” Failure to name it properly will disqualify the account. If you have wealthy adult children, they should be reminded that they can disclaim their share of your IRA in order to pass it to their children to avoid tax consequences. However, once again, only certain beneficiary designations will allow a

NOVEMBER 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

disclaimer to work properly. If you are fortunate enough to have an estate that is subject to the federal estate tax, your IRA beneficiary will receive an additional benefit – an income tax deduction for any estate taxes paid on the account. For the remainder of 2012, estates of more than $5.12 million are subject to the federal estate tax. If Congress takes no action by the end of the year, the exemption will fall to $1 million January 1st. It is important to work with a qualified advisor when dealing with designating beneficiaries or re-titling an inherited IRA account, as this area of the Internal Revenue Code is very complicated and it is likely that the IRA custodian (the company holding the account) will give you incorrect information. T. John Costello is an Attorney in Kelley Kronenberg’s Fort Myers office. He leads the firm’s Wills, Trusts and Estates Department. BISTRO 41 BY LAURA J. CUMMINGS

CHEF HEATH HIGGINBOTHAM DID NOT DISAPPOINT AS HE PRESENTED BEAUTIFUL DISHES, MAKING IT EASY TO FEAST WITH THE EYES FIRST. TO BE SURE, THE BOLD FLAVORS WERE NOT A DISAPPOINTMENT, EITHER.

38

APRIL 2012

Looking for a hip place for al fresco dining this fall? Try Bistro 41. Located in the Bell Tower Shoppes, Bistro 41 exudes chic. The contemporary feel of the restaurant coupled with an expansive outdoor dining area makes this a superb choice for casual fine dining. Judging from the architectural features and decor of bright, bold paintings, we were anticipating something special on the plate-ups. Chef Heath Higginbotham did not disappoint as he presented beautiful dishes, making it easy to feast with the eyes first. To be sure, the bold flavors were not a disappointment, either. Propelled by the success of Bistro 41, owners Shawn LeMarie and Robert Rommel recently purchased Bayfront Bistro on Fort Myers Beach. Both restaurants have captured local culinary awards. Many things have changed for the Bell Tower Shoppes and its eclectic collection of retailers since Bistro 41 opened in 1997, but the quality of this restaurant is not one of them. Bistro 41 serves natural foods, using locallygrown organic produce and meats without antibiotics or hormones. Those with special dietary needs will find dining at Bistro 41 easy, as the menu identifies dishes which are dairy free, gluten free, peanut free and vegetarian. As we were seated in the center of the bistro, we perused the expansive wine offerings and noted the “41 Special,” a superb deal for two including salads, entrees, dessert and wine for $41. The bistro also presents wine dinners throughout the season, where international and domestic wines are paired with special menu items for a five-course meal. For starters, we ordered the Famous 41

Flat, a meat-and-cheese platter which includes Mediterranean olives, fresh strawberries, hard salami, crostini, red onion marmalade and apricot preserves, along with a choice of three cheeses. We selected the tangy Maytag Blue Cheese, a rich and creamy St. Andre and the Lamb Chopper, a mild sheep-milk cheese with a smooth, buttery texture. We also tried the Bistro Crab Cake, which is pan seared and served with a zippy avocado remoulade, along with caramelized plantains. This sweet-savory combination is a definite palate pleaser. Next we moved to the salads, which we enjoyed with an extra helping of crostini bread. The house Bistro Salad is packed with flavor, featuring mixed baby field greens with portobello mushrooms, gorgonzola cheese, red onion, sun-dried tomatoes, toasted walnuts and pine nuts, topped with balsamic vinaigrette and pesto drizzle. “Full” portions of the salad are large enough for a meal, and “half” portions are still ample for splitting if you plan to indulge in the main course. Selecting a dish wasn’t easy with options including pork, pasta, chicken, steak, salmon, scallops and other seafood. We knew someone

must order the bistro’s “Award Winning” Pork Pot Roast, a staple on the menu for years. If ever the chef tries to remove it, faithful customers are aghast, said our server, Dan. While pot roast may sound like Mom’s homecooking, Bistro 41 manages to make this comfort food sophisticated. Braised in port wine and well-seasoned, the Good Nature pork roast is served atop roasted garlic mashed potatoes with a stack of caramelized onions swirled on top. The dish is finished with savory gravy and beurre monté and served with broccolini. We also tried the Prime Bavette Steak, a French-style cut of marinated beef packed with meaty flavor. The Divers Scallops were also exceptional. The pan-seared sea scallops were skewered on lemon grass and served over herb tomato spinach orzo pasta with lemon infused extra virgin olive oil and feta cheese. Also on the menu are seasonal Chef’s Features, which change according to the availability of fresh ingredients and the inclination of the chef. Spanish Stuffed Peppers were on a recent menu, while previous menus have featured Duck Breast Wellington and Twin Lobster Tails. We topped off the meal by splitting two delectable desserts, the ever-popular crème brûlée and a luscious Bourbon Chocolate Bread Pudding.

Bistro 41 is located at 13499 S. Cleveland Avenue in the Bell Tower Shoppes. Reservations may be made by calling (239)466-4141 or online at www.bistro41.com.

AND

another thing... DOES PRETTY MATTER? BY BRUCE TURKEL

In his best seller Blink, Malcolm Gladwell writes about the decisions we make quickly Gladwell argues that millions of years of evolution have given us the skills we need to make instant choices, often without all the facts. One of his examples is a story about a museum that spent an enormous amount of money on a well-tested and professionally authenticated ancient statue only to have an expert question the providence of the piece after one quick glance. Being a designer, I found that discussion extremely interesting because I often wonder the same thing. Is surface design — and the decisions made because of it — a shallow criteria or is it a true harbinger of much deeper meaning? Nature seems to side with the second argument. The black/red/yellow pattern of a coral snake, for example, broadcasts the viper’s poisonous abilities, hence the nursery rhyme, “red on yellow, kill a fellow, red on black, friend of Jack.” Thorns, fangs, and claws all look dangerous and remind us to stay away. And evolution has graced some less dangerous creatures, such as the small emperor moth, with features designed to make them look much more formidable than they actually are — in the moth’s case, spots across delicate wings that resemble the eyes of the fiercest owl. Politics, too, thrives on decisions made based on surface image. The 1960 presidential debate between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy is an oft-quoted example. While most analysts say that radio listeners thought Nixon won the debate, Kennedy was declared the winner based on TV viewers. JFK’s youthful, vigorous, and handsome visage trumped the old school Nixon who was described as tired, puffy, and unshaven. Regardless of their political affiliation, every president since Reagan has been tall and good-looking, including the two candidates for the current presidential race. And almost a century ago, the man widely declared to be one of the worst presidents in history, Warren Harding, was said to have won the race because he “looked presidential.” Packaging has always been one of the key assets of marketing too, and until recently the belief was that 80% of purchase decisions were made in-store when the consumer actually saw the product. Today, when more and more purchase decisions are made online, sites that are visually oriented and aesthetically pleasing outscore and outsell sites that are not. Computerization has also made surface appeal more important. Because of modern design and manufacturing

techniques, virtually all products function the way they should. Remember the days when TVs used to break? Picture tubes would blow, the gears inside dials (remember dials?) would strip, remote controls would fail. But thanks to computer design and digital signals, today’s TVs work like they’re supposed to and consumers don’t feel the need to replace them very often. To stimulate sales, manufacturers have to create new features - flat screens and 3D TV - just to get their customers back into the stores. Cars from Korea’s Kia used to be considered cheap and tinny transportation. But just as with televisions, computer-aided design and manufacturing changed the abilities and durability of the cars, bringing them into line with other, much more expensive automobiles. Kia telegraphed these changes with cutting-edge design and today their beautiful cars are rocketing up the sales charts. But the question remains, are visuals reliable indicators of quality or just shallow eyewash? Would Ron Paul have been a more successful candidate if he looked more like Mitt Romney than a ventriloquist’s dummy? Would Romney and Barack Obama have been as successful as they’ve been without their movie star looks? Would Apple have become the most valuable technology company on the planet without its steadfast commitment to design? Miami, Milan, and Madrid have all built their businesses based on aesthetics. Audi, Kia, and Infiniti, too. So have Apple, Bose, and Bang & Olufsen. But does that mean their product offerings are better than the rest? That’s a question deserving of a formidable debate. What I know is that besides being an enjoyable end in and of itself, good design is a valuable business asset. Companies that invest in aesthetics see the difference on their balance sheets. And time-starved consumers make purchase choices based on the snap decisions that have been honed by millions of years of evolutionary development. Bruce is a branding expert who makes his clients’ brand experiences more valuable. He’s worked with great organizations including Discovery Channel, Baptist Health, MetCare, and Miami. He’s spoken at MIT, Harvard, and hundreds of conferences. He’s been on NPR and CNN and featured in The New York Times and Fast Company Magazine. He has published three books on advertising including Building Brand Value. You can reach Bruce at bturkel@turkel.info LP
