THANKSGIVING Being grateful is said to be the key for an abundant life. This month we celebrate a tradition dating back to the early settlers of our country. It is a time when all immigrants and natives alike can show appreciation for the chance to live in a country founded on principles of opportunity and freedom. Sure, it’s a great time to get together with family and friends or to watch football while getting ready for the holidays. This year, Chanukah begins the night before Thanksgiving and it appears the holiday season is well under way. Speaking of holidays, our feature story this month has some great gift giving ideas. Kavita Channe is our extraordinary cover girl, showing off some fabulous jewels and clothes for the naughty and nice. Kavita is also a fan favorite on the sidelines as well. Check her out on facebook or follow her on twitter. Another holiday I encourage everyone to remember is Veterans Day on the 19th. If there is one group deserving of our gratitude, it is those who serve, served or paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Too many times we take for granted our ability to celebrate every occasion without concern for our security. So, find some way to show your appreciation and respect for the men and women who served our nation. A friend recently started a website to honor vets one last time. Here is the site, should you be inclined to support the cause. www.honorflightsouthfl.org. Lastly, it will be fifty years since the John F. Kennedy assassination on the 22nd. JFK was a President whose ideals transcended time, regardless of party affiliation, and his inspiration took us beyond our imagination as a nation. It is my hope those in Washington will rekindle his spirit and work together to keep our country great and drive us to limitless opportunities.

Asteroid Ancestry Fort Lauderdale astronomer cracks a 200-year-old puzzle It may not be the most life-altering discovery, but Fort Lauderdale astronomer Clifford Cunningham has uncovered the true creator of the word ‘asteroid.’ Cunningham’s research revealed that William Herschel, the famed court astronomer for King George III, did not coin the term as our science textbooks claim. Rather it was the son of a poet friend of Herschel’s—Greek scholar Charles Burney Jr.—who invented the word. Asteroid actually means “star-like” in Greek. Cunningham, a world authority on asteroids, uncovered two letters at Yale University that indisputably proved that Burney Jr. came up with the term. Cunningham’s findings will affect future science textbooks and is already being reviewed by the editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica. “We have a big revision of our asteroid article in the works,” says Erik Gregersen, senior editor for astronomy and space exploration at the Encyclopedia. “To be accurate, the etymology of the word might have to credit this other fellow.”

School for Thought HCA and NSU announce a new kind of health center In what he called “a transformational day in our university’s history,” Nova Southeastern University president George Hanbury recently announced the anchor tenant for the school’s new Academical Village: A “Jeffersonian concept” of scholars and students living and working closely together to combine theory and practice. The anchor tenant for this educational Utopia will be a 100-bed HCA teaching hospital, which will operate in conjunction with Nova’s medical school. It will be the foundation for NSU’s Academical Village, which will ultimately include more than 3 million square feet of space. The teaching hospital will tie in “the research and academic component into our scope of care to patients,” says Michael Joseph, President and CEO of HCA East Florida, which operates 14 Nova Southeastern South Florida hospitals. A Hero’s Home Standard Pacific Homes and Helping-a-Hero reward an Army veteran When Army Staff Sgt. Brian Mast decided to settle in Broward County after returning home, he did so because of happy memories from childhood vacations in Fort Lauderdale. He also did not want to deal with the icy surfaces up north, having lost both legs in Afghanistan. Coming to the rescue was national non-profit Helping-A-Hero and Standard Pacific Homes, which broke ground last month on a $450,000 home in their Watercrest community in Parkland. For a $50,000 mortgage, Sgt. Mast will be given the home, customized for his special needs. Helping-a-Hero donated $100,000, a ‘specially adapted’ federal housing grant covered $67,000, and Standard Pacific Homes donated the land. The rest comes from in-kind donations by Standard’s suppliers and vendors. “When we started talking to the vendors about this, they were all excited to help,” says Dan Grosswald, president of the South Florida division of Standard Pacific. “I met [Sgt. Mast and his wife] and they were very thankful. But we should be thanking them, not the other way around. This has been very rewarding for everyone participating.” Helping a Hero (HelpingaHero.org) has funded 90 homes in 21 states for veterans so far, says National Chairman Meredith Iler. Two more homes in Florida will be awarded this month at the organization’s national gala in Houston Nov. 12.

Keeping PACE with the Eco Times County adopts a new energy-saving program

Fewer Puppies? New permit puts breeders on a short leash Broward is raining cats and dogs these days, spawning not only too many abandoned pets, but numerous adoption agencies as well. To stem the tide, the county commission has passed a new law requiring anyone who wants to breed to purchase a permit from the county. Among other restrictions, breeding rights will be denied to those known to have abused animals. There is some debate over the new regulations in the local breeding community. The law, meant to restrict irresponsible reproduction, may end up just penalizing those who breed conscientiously. Those intended to be punished—operators of socalled puppy mills—will probably skirt the new law. Nor does it necessarily protect our four-legged chums from irresponsible pet owners who still abandon animals when it suits them. Still, one paw at a time.

Shorter Voting Lines? Broward to spend $8 million on voting gear Anyone who had to endure the excruciating lines during the last presidential election knows why Broward was ridiculed nationwide. In some cases, voters had to wait four, five and even six hours to cast their ballots. Not a good way to run a democracy. The good news is that county elections supervisor Brenda Snipes recently disclosed a plan to spend $8 million on new voting equipment. The original proposal called for $16.8 million, but the county balked at the price, having already spent millions on touch-screen voting machines—only to have to return to paper ballots amid controversy over the accuracy of the machines. This time, Snipes negotiated with the county and cut her request in half, with plans to use part of the money on 600 new DS-200 ballot scanners, 2,000 new voting booths and 38 ballot printers to be used in the early voting sites. Voters will see a difference, says Snipes. Last year, many filed into packed polling places only to find a single ballot scanner servicing the entire crowd.

The problem with installing energy efficient devices is that they take so long to pay for themselves. A new national program has been crafted to solve that problem for homeowners. Broward County has now approved the so-called PACE program (Property Assessed Clean Energy). This allows property owners to install energy efficient improvements such as insulation, solar panels and high-efficiency air conditioners, and incorporate the cost into their yearly property taxes. The program relies on private companies to provide the financing—i.e. your mortgage holder—while the county is responsible for collecting and repaying the money. The only glitch is that it may make it harder to sell your house, since the new owners will have to continue paying for your new appliances with their ongoing property taxes. Mortgage holders aren’t thrilled, either. As an alternative funding source, the county will work with Energy Fund Florida and EcoCity Partners.

Fashion

in store style It’s mix and match for the season at L&L on Sunrise By Denise Stirk Photography By Matt Lagrotte

hen it comes to fashion in South Florida, it’s a bit of a jungle out there. Luckily, Michelle DiMarco and Kelli Krystynak navigate the emerging trends, bringing the best of the best into their unassuming Fort Lauderdale shop: Lilac and Lilies. Neither messes around when it comes to fashion. DiMarco is a FIT grad and celebrity stylist, while Krystynak has her degree in Fashion Merchandising from Kent State University. From Krystynak’s House of Harlow chunky gold accessories to DiMarco’s dazzling Parker shirt, it’s apparent why the pair’s keen eye for style has blossomed L&L into a hot local boutique. Before the duo hopped a flight to Vegas for market week (where the chicest stores go to find the coolest threads), they gave a few tips for staying cool while living in some of the hottest zip codes.

Are there any trends you’re obsessed with this season? M I’m a big fan of wearing a tailored blazer, so I’m obsessing over tuxedo inspired dressing. K I am loving the trend of mixing and matching patterns together in one outfit. It looks amazing. I’ve also been seeing a lot of skirts— all different lengths and styles, so lady like. Which fad will you never give in to? M Crocs!!!! K I never say never. On Krystynak (left): Dress by Parker | On DiMarco (right): Shirt by Parker | Jeans by Flying Monkey | Accessories her own

She really knows how to construct a garment so that it’s complimentary to the female shape. K I’m obsessed with anything House of Harlow. The Sunburst pendant necklace is my favorite and I never take it off. What is the most worn thing in your closet? M My Valentino Rockstud Slingbacks. K A white v-neck tee. So classic. Dress it up or dress it down. Share your number one fashion tip. M Our mission statement at L&L is, “To inspire and connect with our clients to put their best selves forward everyday.” So, my one fashion tip is to dress for you and in what makes you feel most confident, regardless of trends or fads. Home Rise

Single-family home prices in South Florida continue to improve, even though interests are on the rise as well. And there’s more to come. By Darcie Lunsford

ome sales in South Florida—and across the state—are becoming the economic version of the Man of Steel. Not even interest rates moving faster than a speeding bullet seem able to put a chink in their armor. August marked the 20th consecutive month that the price of a single-family home was higher than it was the same month the previous year. The median price for a single-family home in South Florida jumped 21 percent year-over-year to hit $254,000, according to Florida Realtors data. Prices on condos and townhomes in August told a similar story of resilience and rebound, rising 35 percent to $139,000. But August also marked the seventh consecutive month that interest rates on the all-important 30-year fixed mortgage jogged up. In fact, as of August, interest rates had soared more than a percentage point since January, fueled largely by Ben Bernanke and other Fed officials hemming and hawing that the Fed could—and eventually will have to—stop its $85 billion a month bond-buying program. When the Fed does stop snapping up mortgage-backed and Treasury securities, bond values will fall and interest rates will rise some more. In today’s post-traumatic-recession environment just the mere mention that the Fed may taper these asset purchases is enough to send the Dow toppling and mortgage rates surging. In South Florida, meanwhile, the housing market continues to shine, far below the daunting macro-economic storm clouds. “It is still a very good time to buy,” says Doug Leever, mortgage sales manager of Miramar-based Tropical Financial Credit Union. “People who have their finances in order are ready to buy.” Demand for new mortgages at Tropical Financial has nearly doubled since last year, Leever says. And he doesn’t see that stopping even though he does expect, “rates to continue to trickle up.” Sustained demand despite more expensive borrowing costs? It makes sense when you put today’s market in context. Rates and home values are still well below where they were at the market peak in 2006. In 2006, for instance, the average mortgage rate was 6.4 percent and the median price of single-family home in South Florida was hovering around $400,000. Today, rates and home prices remain about a third lower. “I think some buyers are feeling like they missed the boat,” says Joanne McKeage, an agent with Coldwell Banker in Fort Lauderdale. “But home prices are still under-valued and prices are going to go up. Interest rates are still historically low.” Q

The Art of Museum Making Twenty-seven years ago, Mindy Shrago decided she wanted to create an art museum for the children of Broward County, especially those who lived in the west. It is now considered one of the top few—if not the best—of its kind in the nation. By JULIE KAY photo By downtownphoto/fort lauderdale

t’s a Sunday morning at the Young at Art Children’s Museum, and a string of parents bearing gifts starts streaming in the door for the bevy of birthday parties that will ensue all day. Mindy Shrago, the creator, founder and CEO of the museum, is there to greet them all with her ever-present smile. With seemingly boundless energy she flies from room to room, chatting up employees and student volunteers while giving visitors a tour of the 55,000-square foot museum she created from dust starting 27 years ago. After a magazine photo shoot, Shrago meets a potential well-heeled donor—the cousin of U.S. Sen. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz—to give his family a personal pottery lesson. Then she’s off to a lunch with the head of the Association of Children’s Museums, who’s in town for a tour of local institutions. It may be hard for visitors to believe a self-described young hippie artist and her mother dreamed up the vision for a unique museum that draws visitors from around the country—and then singlehandedly raised the $26 million of funding, donor by donor. But Shrago is nonchalant about that. She steers all conversations back to the museum, and her life’s passion: Art. “We never had a strategic plan,” shrugs Shrago, 60. “We just shot from the hip. We believe arts are involved in every aspect of your life.” Shrago was a successful Fort Lauderdale pottery artist when she and her mother, Esther Shrago, hatched the idea for a children’s museum dedicated to the arts. The Miami native had won best of show at the prestigious Las Olas Art Festival and was an acclaimed artist in the 1970s and 1980s. But she wanted to do more. She, along with her mother, wanted to instill her

She’s known and met everyone to create art themselves, the museum featured lots of handsin the community and has been a part of Broward County on arts and crafts projects. In one area, kids could learn her whole life along with me. We’ve integrated art and about various countries like Japan by seeing a short film, sitting in a pagoda, and then creating their own morikami politics.” Shrago’s first fundraising success was cold-calling art. Shrago began to feel it was her mission to replace whatever arts the children were losing in school 2002, Young At Art was named “Best Children’s Art Museum in the Nation” by Child magazine. It was also about this time with her museum. “Arts are what teach you about every subject matter,” she that Shrago embarked on her mission to bring what she says. “They integrate math, science, history. Kids can learn sees as ‘healing art’ to disadvantaged youths. She began an “artreach” program where artists would teach art to kids about measurements from a sculpture.” Shrago was also an early advocate of recycling and ecology. at a homeless shelter every day after school. Now, a new She made sure to incorporate lessons on these topics in “Arthouse” is under construction in a low-income duplex her museum, always in a fun way. Another steadfast goal in the Sistrunk neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale. “We want was to focus on teaching art to the kids, not just showing to make sure we’re touching every community member,” it. By 1991, the museum began offering studio art classes Shrago says. “It takes a village, remember.” But Shrago still wasn’t satisfied. She wanted a permanent for children, taught by professional artists. Scholarships, underwritten by corporate and foundation partners, were home for Young at Art, an utterly “green” building designed by her and a hand-picked architect, one that would offered to children in need. A key early supporter of Shrago’s mission was Broward incorporate generous space for exhibits, artist studios, County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish. “Basically, Mindy pottery rooms and outdoor kiln, a computer animation lab,

recording studio and computer lab for graphic design and gaming, birthday party rooms, a volunteer lounge area and a cafe and gift shop. The solution came in 2006 when Shrago signed a partnership with Broward County to build a Young at Art Museum that also housed a Broward County Library Children’s Reading Center. An exhaustive capital campaign raised more than half of the $21 million needed, while Broward County contributed $5 million. The Knights Foundation Arts Challenge awarded Shrago a $500,000 grant. The 11-acre building opened at State Road 84 and Northwest 121st Avenue in Davie in 2012. Mindy’s mother retired shortly afterwards. “The partnership with Broward County Libraries created a synergy that merged literacy with art,” Shrago says. “And the library is open seven days a week, so there is no dead space on weekends.” Shrago used her charm to persuade experts from some of the nation’s finest museums, including The Getty, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Noguchi Museum, Museum for African Art, Chicago Children’s Museum and Brooklyn Museum of Art, to convene in a symposium to help cook up a master plan of exhibits for the museum. Janet Rice Elman, executive director of the Association of Children’s Museums, called the efforts of Shrago and her mother “simply astounding.”

The Young at Art Museum features the finest, state-of-the-art studios for ceramics, printmaking, cartooning, photography, mixed media, drawing and painting.

“To have founders who opened a museum—and this is now the third location—and see it through three different capital campaigns is very unusual,” says Elman. “I cannot think of another example in the field of founders who founded and refounded a museum. I think these two women had sheer determination and unbelievable vision and drive to push this forward.” After touring the newest incarnation of the museum recently, Elman called it “fantastic… I love the way the library is nestled in the middle of the museum. Libraries are traditionally community gathering places, so it all makes sense.” If there is one person not surprised by Shrago’s accomplishments, it’s her husband who is now a mediator. “Art has always been Mindy’s passion,”

says Spechler. “She eats, drinks and sleeps Young at Art. I supported her 100 percent.” Indeed, the entire family is passionate about art; the couple’s two children, Ali and Zack, are both artists. Shrago and her husband have a sizeable art collection in their Hollywood Lakes house as well as in their Manhattan home. A workaholic who wakes up at 5:30 a.m. daily, Shrago has few interests outside of art. She recently vacationed in Italy with her husband, where she viewed plenty of artwork, and spends her days off at art museums. She recently visited the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. A friend texted her to see where she was. “I’m at a museum,” she responded. “Art heals.” Q LMGFL.COM | NOVEMBER 2013

In layman’s terms, this means that the food is ‘natural’ in the most basic sense, raised free of anything artificial. 1776 N Pine Island Road Suite 320 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33322 954.370.8999 www.BoardroomPR.com South Florida public relations, advertising and social media marketing firms know a few simple rules for website engagement: Content must be constant, current and on topic. What does this mean? If you want your blog to get indexed by the search engines (a process called search engine optimization, or SEO) and then found and read by prospective clients, your content must be… • Constant. You must blog or refresh your content areas all the time. Blogging and website management don’t exist under some “set it and forget it” marketing practice. Once a week is the minimum to keep the search engines happy. Twice a week or more is even better. • Current. It should be up to date with the latest news relevant to your industry. If you notice that the news is reporting that people are searching for a popular new line of purple peaches, then your boutique specialty food market had better be blogging about purple peaches, and then sharing those posts on your

74

Facebook, Twitter and other social media. • On topic. On the other hand, if you run a South Florida law firm or a national accounting practice, or an upscale shopping mall, then your audience likely isn’t coming to your site to learn about purple peaches. But they will be coming to your site – or one like it – for information on legal or accounting issues, or for news, trends or inquiries about the latest fashions. One of the high-level findings of a recent Google Benchmarking Report noted that content is vital to customer engagement online. According to one report, it’s important to “Focus on compelling content. When it comes to creating content for your site,

what’s the cardinal rule? Don’t be boring. Whatever business you and your clients are in, there are always inventive ways to make the topics more interesting,’ the report’s author noted. Use your imagination. Get creative. Use stories and personal anecdotes to make content come alive.” At Boardroom Communications, our clients have the power of “engagement” of social media. Those companies that handle their own social media also know the importance of the three rules – creating content that is constant, current and on topic. Adhere to them, and Google – and your customers – will notice, and return.

These things are what attracted me to this area. As a mom of 3 girls, my priority was to have them in an A school system where they will be in the right environment to succeed. Being in such a great school turned out to be a real blessing when my daughter was diagnosed with Autism and required additional educational services. The outstanding support at the Public school enabled her to get back on track and graduate with her peers. Another bonus of being in Davie is all of the amazing parks. We spend a lot of time at outdoors and we have so many parks to choose from near our house and every park is covered by a shade to protect children from the sun. Real estate has been my passion for the

last 10 years. It started out with me sitting at home with my 1st daughter watching House Hunters on HGTV. But after I began construction on my home in Davie I decided to make a career out of doing two things I loved, connecting with people and looking at houses. The Real Estate Network International has provided me the opportunity to assist my clients with all their real estate needs. Specializing in luxury homes, my goal is to connect you with the home of your dreams. As well as to ensure that all your real estate transactions are negotiated effectively, whether it be buying, selling, or securing an investment property. Find a place where you can ďŹ t in. But still stand out. Nova.edu/Undergrad Luis Perez knew when he was in high school that he wanted to go to dental school at Nova Southeastern University, just like his mom did. And because he also knew that he’d have the chance to participate in clinical exploration programs with the dental college as an NSU undergraduate, it sealed the deal on his college choice. With classes taught by faculty who know your name, so many ways to get involved on campus (including the Pre-Dental Society for Luis), and exposure to prestigious graduate and professional programs, NSU is the premier private research university that can help you achieve your goals, too.
