NOVEMBER 2013

from the publisher

HAPPY NOVEMBER, ESTERO!! I am sure that everyone is relieved that things have started to dry out around paradise!!! WOW! What a summer!! I, for one, am ready for a change of seasons. Change of seasons, you say? Of course!! While some parts of the country enjoy many changes to their weather and vegetation in the fall, we in southwest Florida can always tell that it has arrived by simply watching the temperatures of the Gulf of Mexico and the car carriers making their annual migration into town. We already have a little more traffic and our shops stores and favorite restaurants are slightly busier. But what a great time it is around here in the greater Estero area. There is so much going on already. The Florida Everblades have kicked off their season, college football is almost at the end of theirs and FGCU’s Men’s & Women’s basketball seasons are just around the corner!! GO EAGLES!! #DUNK CITY!! I hope

8

everyone will take advantage of having the ‘home team’ so close by. I encourage you to get out and support these athletes. Whether in business, sports or life, to reach the milestone of 5,000 in anything is quite an accomplishment! This month’s cover story honors K-Rock’s dynamic duo in the afternoons, Stan & Haney. That’s right… coming up on their 5,000 show together. They are funny most of the time, irreverent some of the time, but talented all of the time. You can catch their show on 96.1FM. In case you have been away for a while, the big talk (other than Hertz relocating to New Jersey) involves the debate over incorporation. The first step for the residents of our community is to support a petition to allow a referendum to be placed on the ballot (no matter if you are for or against we still need to be able to voice our opinions!!). We want to introduce you to John Goodrich, Chairman of the Incorporation and Annexation Committee of the Estero Council of Community Leaders. Read about what lies before us. Speaking of community leaders, some say that Dick Schweers,

NOVEMBER 2013 | ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM

Chairman of the Estero Fire Rescue Board is the ‘Face of Estero.’ I invite you to enjoy getting to know him! So, how’s your golf game? Doesn’t matter!! Even if you are the most experienced player around or you have never held a club… how about a 30-acre family golf center that will enable the whole family to enjoy a golf outing together? Check out the Alico Family Golf Center coming to the area early next year. And, how about a healthy cut of prime rib?? Head on down to the Pewter Mug, and enjoy not only Certified Angus Beef, but tremendous seafood and an incredible soup/salad bar. And, on a sad note, we said goodbye to the Grande Dame of Estero and Founder of the Estero Historical Society, Mimi Straub at 100+ years of age. We have dedicated a “scene” page in this issue to her memory. And on a personal note, in a few weeks most of us will gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving. I don’t know of any community that should have more to be thankful for than Estero. I hope that each of you will take time during the month to reflect, in your own way, on what you are most thankful for. Good health, true friends, loving family or special opportunities—take time to be thankful. And tell the ones that you love, that you do. And as always, “Enjoy the Lifestyle!”

Dick Schweers, chairman of the Estero Fire Rescue Board of Commissioners and Estero Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Political Person of the Year.

THE FACE OF ESTERO: DICK SCHWEERS Chairman of the Estero Fire Rescue Board of Commissioners—and the Estero Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Political Person of the Year By Laura J. Cummings Gates

ick Schweers entered the political scene in Estero during tumultuous times. It was August 1997 and he had just been appointed to the Estero Fire and Rescue District’s Board of Commissioners by Gov. Lawton Chiles. It didn’t matter that Schweers was a lifelong Republican and Chiles a Democrat. The Estero fire district was in chaos, evoking headlines and drawing picketers from around the state. Chiles needed to get someone on the board fast. And not just anyone—someone with experience, integrity and levelheadedness. Schweers had recently retired as District Superintendent of Northern Illinois Gas and was settling into what seemed a sleepy tropical paradise with his wife, Shirley. Before relocating, he had been actively involved in chambers of commerce and served on the board of the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District. At first, he wasn’t convinced he should get mixed up in the mess left by former Fire Chief Jimmy Wright, who surprised Estero’s 11 firefighters by firing them while they were out on a training exercise and replacing them with a private contractor, Wackenhut. By the time Schweers entered the picture, a Wackenhut firefighter was killed

during a brush fire, the fire chief was arrested for stealing picket signs, and several commissioners had resigned. The first fire board meeting he attended, in the old fire barn on U.S. 41, was packed with TV crews, outraged Estero residents and angry firefighters. “It was filled with sweat, anger and emotion,” Schweers recalls. “The events were just incredible.” The board had fired Wackenhut and reinstated the former Estero firefighters, but some had already moved on. “So there we were with six guys, one old barn, two old trucks, no chief and close to a quarter-million dollars in debt,” Schweers says. “And Estero was starting to grow.” FGCU had just opened, spurring a flurry of new development in the community, and the Estero Chamber of Commerce was beginning to take shape. Miromar Outlets and Germain Arena also opened in 1998. “We had to grow fast in 1997 to 1998,” Schweers says. “We took out a big loan and started buying fire trucks.” As the community expanded, Schweers took an active role, not only in bringing Advanced Life Support services to the fire district, but also with issues concerning the community at large. He became chairman of the board in 2000 and directed the construction of all four fire stations. “He’s been kind of the face of Estero for a long time,” says Estero Fire Chief Scott Vanderbrook. Schweers fought the bureaucracy for years to get a flashing emergency signal on U.S. 41 at the Coconut Point fire station. He’s still fighting to turn that signal into a fully functioning traffic light, ramping up efforts after his Fountain Lakes neighbor, 17-year-old Danielle Chapman, was killed crossing the busy highway. “He is very dedicated, and he is willing to jump in on anything to make the community better,” Vanderbrook says. “There’s a relentlessness about Commissioner Schweers. He’s very detail-oriented, and he follows through to the end.” Q

ALICO FAMILY GOLF CENTER COMING IN JANUARY By Laura J. Cummings Gates

magine the whole family enjoying a golf outing together, without anyone getting frustrated or left behind. The kids are learning the basics with a rewarding round of SNAG (Starting New at Golf) on short holes designed just for beginners. Mom is practicing her short game on the chipping green while dad is teeing off at the driving range. Everyone will finish up together with a fun round of mini golf, which reinforces the fundamentals of solid putting. And then, there’s dinner at the sports cafe. This scenario for family fun will be possible with the opening of the Alico Family Golf Center this winter. It’s the vision of PGA Golf Pro Jim St. Germain. He has teamed up with another PGA professional, Kraig Feighery, who will manage the new facility. “This will be a fantastic amenity to the community,” says David Dale, president of the Owen-Ames-Kimball Company, which has been contracted to build the golf center. “There’s nothing like this south of Tampa.” The 30-acre site sits off of Alico Road about one mile west of Interstate 75, on Lee Road. Architects have designed the driving range to face north so the sun will

never be in the golfer’s eyes. The range will also be open late for optimum flexibility of schedules, closing at 11 p.m. State and local officials are welcoming the golf center as a valuable addition to the community. Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen took lessons from Feighery when he was a pro at Gulf Harbour Yacht and Country Club. “I’m very excited, and I know he loves the game and is a great business man,” she said. She was joined by Rep. Ray Rodrigues at the golf center’s groundbreaking ceremony Aug. 26. “This will be Cecil Pendergrass, chair of the Lee County Board of Commissioners, also a fantastic came to show his support. amenity to the “This is the result of our efforts community,” says in Lee County of being business friendly,” he says, referring to david dale. commissioners’ recent reduction of building impact fees. The timing was right, says St. Germain, who has been planning for more than a decade. He was pleased to acquire the property at a good price just as the local economy is picking up and more families are moving to the area. The Golf Center will include a 5,600-square-foot clubhouse with a full restaurant, three party rooms and a golf merchandise shop. A staff of 15 will include four PGA teaching professionals. The driving range will have 60 tee boxes to start, with future plans for a double-decker covered tee box area. The short game practice area will include a putting green and a chipping green.

Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Alico Family Golf Center

Beginners from ages three up will be able to learn the game on a “SNAG-friendly” course with holes of 30 to 65 yards. The miniature golf course will feature a realistic design for “skillful” putting. “We’re here to simplify golf and bring it to the masses, and grow the game,” Feighery said. He is hoping to grow alliances in the community, as well, working with Florida Gulf Coast University’s Golf Management Program, the Lee County School District and local businesses. Future plans to expand the Golf Center include adding batting cages, bumper boats and an arcade. The Alico Family Golf Center is scheduled to open in January and will have the only miniature golf course in the county east of U.S. 41. Feighery and St. Germain expect the hybrid of family entertainment and golf skill building to be a winning combination. “This will be a nationally recognized family golf center,” Feighery said. Q

Meet John Goodrich, Vice Chair and Government Relations Director for the Estero Council of Community Leaders By Laura J. Cummings Gates

ohn Goodrich’s butterfly garden could use some weeding. His golf game has been totally neglected, and he’s rarely crossing titles off his list of books to read. As the “general” in charge of the fight for Estero’s incorporation, Goodrich heads up the volunteer army, which has been feverishly working to bring the issue to a vote in November 2014. Goodrich has chaired the Estero Council of Community Leaders (ECCL) Incorporation and Annexation Committee for the last seven years. Until this summer, the ECCL had been opposed to incorporation, citing Estero’s positive relationship with the Lee Board of County Estero began forming Commissioners (BOCC) and the its unique Community effective efforts of Estero’s many retired executives to establish Plan a decade ago, and maintain superior standards coining its slogan as a for development in Estero. Now, things have changed. “Village with a Vision.” Estero leaders feel threatened by Bonita Springs’ voluntary annexation of 130 acres off Coconut Road, along with a planned vote to bring 842 homes in Pelican Landing and The Colony into the city next spring. The Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort is now contiguous with Bonita Springs’ boundaries, and rumor has it Estero’s southern neighbor is after communities on the north side of Coconut Road. “The world has changed for Estero,” Goodrich says. “We’re threatened by Bonita Springs, and we want to ensure ourselves of what we’ve worked for, in terms of building standards and quality of life.” There also have been changes in leadership and budget woes at the county level, which concern Estero’s volunteer leadership.

J

“You can’t control your destiny by depending on county management,” Goodrich says. “As the county’s financial situation gets worse and worse, it could have a negative impact on Estero. Since we are a donor community, we should be able to keep that standard within our community.” Estero began forming its unique Community Plan a decade ago, coining its slogan as a “Village with a Vision.” Community leaders are now in the process of updating the Estero Plan, while seeking to make Estero’s status as a Village official. In the state of Florida, there is no legal distinction between a city, town or village. Incorporation would not change postal zip codes or fire district boundaries. The proposed Village of Estero would be about 30 square miles with a fulltime resident population of 26,000-28,000 (not including seasonal residents) and growing. It would include 30-40 residential communities—most of them gated, which means fewer services would need to be provided by the municipality. The future Village of Estero is projected to have a tax base of about $4.5 billion and bring in annual revenues of about $9 million. The Feasibility Study estimates annual expenses at $5.7 million, leaving a sizable budget surplus. Goodrich calls those figures ultra conservative, considering much development is on the horizon, including the Hertz worldwide headquarters, Walmart and several residential communities. “Incorporation would add another level of government, but when you weigh advantages versus disadvantages, it leans very heavily toward advantages because of the potential to pay less taxes and ability to adhere to building standards and what is envisioned in the Community Plan,” Goodrich says. ESTEROLIFESTYLEMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013

23

The proposed Estero boundaries presented in the Estero Community Plan.

In total, the ECCL will be spending at least $75,000 on its campaign for incorporation, including hiring consultant and lobbyist Burt Saunders to ensure the right to vote gets unanimous support from state legislators. Then the local bill would advance to the full legislature in Tallahassee. The local delegation—Rep. Ray Rodrigues, Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen, Rep. Matt Caldwell, Rep. Dane Eagle, Sen. Garrett Richter and Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto—is expected to vote on the issue on December 3. The legislators will hold two public meetings at the Estero Recreation Center in Estero Community Park leading up to the big vote on Oct. 28 and Nov. 12. The ECCL is trying to accumulate as many petitions as possible from Estero residents and property owners, showing support for the incorporation vote. About 5,000 petitions were recorded within the first few weeks they were made available. “I told my community captains I want 10,000 petitions, and I can be a tough general,” says Goodrich. In addition to the petition drive, Goodrich has spearheaded efforts to determine village boundaries, create Estero’s legal charter and disseminate information from the Feasibility Study commissioned by the ECCL. He began his experience in “backdoor politics,” as he calls it, as a Human Resources executive with Pitney Bowes. Goodrich credits his father with inspiring his bent toward community activism. His dad was a local dentist in the small farming community in Iowa where he grew up. “He did two things to impress me,” Goodrich explains. “One, we always bought our goods and services within our community, even though we paid more. And In addition to the petition two, my dad was always involved drive, Goodrich has in community affairs. He was on the city council for 15 years, spearheaded efforts to served as vice mayor and was determine village boundaries, active in the Lion’s Club.” create Estero’s legal charter When asked if he would run for mayor of Estero, it was and disseminate information an easy answer: “No.” That’s from the Feasibility Study because Estero citizens will commissioned by the ECCL. not directly elect their mayor. Rather, they will elect seven council members, and the council will elect a mayor from among them who will serve as chairman and be the spokesman for Estero. A paid city manager will run day-to-day operations. The question of whether to run for council is a little trickier. Goodrich intended to “retire” from the ECCL board in 2014, but that was before the incorporation issue heated up. “I would only run if I was concerned the directors of Estero needed the background and expertise I’ve had over the last 10 years,” says Goodrich. “I really think there are others who have that, and I would be happy to advise them. Lots of people have the skills and shared vision of what Estero should be.” Q

Through their show, Stan and Haney have had opportunity to meet and form relationships with many celebrities, including Don Shula, the legendary former coach for the Miami Dolphins. They’ve interviewed Richard Petty, Bill Cosby, Rosa Parks and Dr. Jonas Salk, developer of the polio vaccine. They’ve sung “Rhinestone Cowboy” with Glenn Campbell, hung out backstage with Wayne Newton, and made a tradition of calling Buddy Ebsen who played Jed Clampett on The Beverly Hillbilly’s every year on his birthday. When they’re not on the air, Haney relaxes by playing in a band, and Stan hits the links. “When I’m on the golf course, I am not thinking about another thing,” he says. The friends also took over an ailing bowling league at Gator Lanes one year, logging a come-from-behind, second-place finish. They got a private lesson from Johnny Petraglia when he was at the Pro Am Tournament in Naples, but they gave up the game when local lanes went smoke-free. Through the years, the duo has weathered format changes – from Classic Rock to Talk to Modern Rock – and schedule changes (they were relieved to return to afternoons in 2009 after a brutal two year stint in the mornings). Stan and Haney started working together in their 20s and are now solidly middle aged, but still clearly having fun. “Radio, when we got into it, was truly an art, a theatre of the mind,” Stan says. While audio formats and business tactics have changed, the show still offers the duo a daily opportunity to kick back and create. “All of life’s troubles are lost for four hours a day.” Q NOVEMBER 2013

DINING

PEWTER MUG BY LAURA J. Cummings gates

n the often fickle world of fine dining, few restaurants can boast the longevity of the Pewter Mug, which has been a local landmark since 1970. A stone hearth and deep wood-paneled walls give a relaxed, homey atmosphere, setting the stage for a fine steak and seafood feast. Although there have been some ownership changes throughout the years, the butcher and bar manager both have been with the Pewter Mug for more than 40 years. Regulars know Bar Manager Pat Murphy as “Murph the Surf,” as he enjoys catching some wave action when he’s not behind the counter. He liberally shares tales from his

I

world safari adventures while mixing up his “Almost World Famous Murph-a-Ritas.” Butcher and Sous Chef Mike Pilarski works behind the scenes, aging and hand cutting each steak. Pewter Mug serves only Certified Angus Beef and will even cut to order. Chef/Owner Bernard “BJ” Zarvis has been at the helm of the Pewter Mug since 2010, having previously served some of the world’s top golfers at the Naples National Golf Club. Zarvis is a Stoneybrook resident and invites his Estero neighbors to make the short drive down U.S. 41 to experience top-notch steaks and seafood in the dignified, yet unpretentious, atmosphere of the Pewter Mug.

OUR FAVORITES 01. OYSTERS ROCKEFELLER There’s no sliminess to these oysters, baked on the half shell and sealed in cheesy goodness. This attractive and tasty appetizer is flavored with a succulent sauté of garlic bacon and spinach and finished with crispy, browned provolone cheese.

OUR FAVORITES

02. BRAISED ESCARGOT Snails never tasted so good! Escargot is baked with garlic and shallot Madre D’ Butter, then topped with asiago cheese and Panko bread crumbs. After we scooped the escargot out of each crock, we enjoyed sopping up the garlic butter with toasted bread.

03. SUPER SALAD BAR Every entree at Pewter Mug comes with a trip to the salad bar, an experience not to miss. The salad bar is housed in its own room and features a variety of salad fixings, breads, cheeses, prepared salads, fruits and vegetables. Often you will find homemade soups, and there is always an ample assortment of oil and vinegar to create a custom salad dressing. I topped my greens with blue cheese crumbles, mushrooms and dried cranberries, drizzled with grape-seed oil and pear chardonnay vinegar.

04. HAND-CUT, CERTIFIED ANGUS STEAKS Whether you choose prime rib, filet or strip steak, it will be fresh cut with the guaranteed quality of Certified Angus Beef. Try the signature prime ribs blackened or grilled, and order anything from the 8-ounce Prime Minister to the monstrous, 20-ounce Flintstone Cut. All steaks are served with choice of potato and a trip to the soup and salad bar.

05. PAN-SEARED SEA SCALLOPS Sea scallops are among the seasonal seafood selections offered at the Pewter Mug. This lovely dish stars pan-seared scallops in a rich, lemon butter sauce, encircling a tasty couscous and veggie blend, all accented with halved grape tomatoes. The scallops were tender and succulent and well complimented by the creamy sauce. We also enjoyed some other seafood delights, like shrimp scampi over a bed of angel hair pasta.

06. KEYLIME PIE Pewter Mug offers a nice assortment of desserts to satisfy the sweet tooth. We were tempted by the Chocolate Madness cake and the Reece’s Peanut Butter Pie, but settled on the lighter Keylime Pie, as it is the only dessert made in house. This Florida classic did not disappoint with its smooth, melt-in-your mouth texture. The tartness was not overpowering, building its flavor from Nellie & Joe’s Famous Keylime Juice.
