Get the lift you've been looking for with Restylane-L™ Injectable Gel and Perlane-L™ Injectable Gel The Restylane® Injectable Gel and Perlane® Injectable Gel you know and trust are combined with a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to help reduce discomfort.a

Nasolabial folds before. a

After 2 mL of Perlane-L Individual results may vary.

In clinical studies evaluating the Restylane family of products, Restylane-L® and Perlane-L® demonstrated less discomfort at injection and up to one hour later compared to Restylane and Perlane, respectively.

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. These products can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane may also be used for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years. Ask your doctor which is right for you. Important Safety Considerations for the Restylane family of products Products in the Restylane family should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria, or by people with serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment. These products should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Products should not be injected anywhere except the skin, just under the skin (Perlane and Perlane-L only), or in the lips (Restylane only). Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by anyone with a known allergy to lidocaine. Use at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. In these instances, product use could delay healing or make your skin problems worse. After treatment, you might

have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years. Rarely, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial cold sores before, an injection can cause an outbreak. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use the products if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. Products should not be used during pregnancy, when breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years for nasolabial folds. Treatment volume should be limited to 6.0 mL in wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, and limited to 1.5 mL per lip (Restylane only), as greater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site reactions. The safety or effectiveness of treatment in areas other than nasolabial folds and lips (Restylane only) has not been established in controlled clinical studies. The Restylane family of products is available only through a licensed practitioner. Complete product and safety information is available at www.RestylaneUSA.com.

POLITICS – NEW EDITOR – HOLIDAYS Four more years for President Barack Obama! Out of one of the costliest and possibly the nastiest political seasons comes more of the same. We have a President without complete Congressional support. The US House has the same Republican majority while the Democrats control the US Senate. Just in time for the media frenzied “Fiscal Cliff”. What this means for many is more uncertainty about economic growth or the creation of jobs. The looming crisis reminds me of a quote I learned in college, “together we can accomplish anything; divided we are only as strong as our weakest link!” Now, the question is who is going to be the weak link or will outdated agendas be put aside for the greater good? Will our elected leaders come together and collaborate to develop an economic policy to move our country forward and lead the world to prosperity once more? One thing is certain, we must come together and work together “in order to form a more perfect union.” For if we fail the cost to generations to come may be insurmountable. To all those elected officials, I hope, as you take your oath of office, you commit to serving with integrity and with the best interests of your constituency in the forefront of your mind. More than ever, divine intervention may be the key to success. I am pleased to introduce our new Editor, Michael Koretzky. Michael brings with him years of journalist experience as well as entrepreneurial acumen. He started two publications which he sold to other media companies. He was a university educator with numerous accolades from his former students. Those he mentored describe him as being “a mix between Walter Cronkite

and Don King– trustworthy, with an intoxicating side of flash.” A selfdescribed “journoterrorist,” you will find his style pushes the envelope as well as being inviting. He is open to ideas and welcomes your input for future articles. We trust Michael will elevate our sophisticated editorial to become relevant and interesting while enhancing our local approach. Speaking of interesting, one of our feature stories this month is on some adventurous gift ideas. Our editorial team scanned the tri-county area to give you some notions other than the beloved tie or a bottle of perfume. These Christmas stocking stuffer selections are surely not for the faint of heart. And, since there are eight, you can give one each day of Chanukah. The recipient will definitely remember you and the gift. As we enter the holiday season, I want to wish you and your family a Happy Chanukah, a Merry Christmas, a Happy Kwanza and Happy Holidays. I hope your year was filled with success and good

memories. For those who are facing adversity, I wish you courage and the strength to persevere, overcome and become stronger in the New Year. I hope you made a difference this year or maybe paid it forward in gratitude for your good fortune. When you are celebrating with family, I urge you to remember, in any way you are able, those less fortunate and those protecting us here and abroad. I leave you with the wisdom of Benjamin Franklin, “Be always at battle with your vices, at peace with your neighbors and let each New Year find you a better person.” As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle™

CAVIAR MANICURE KIT

Sexy, cool and extravagant – that’s how some describe Ciaté’s new concept, threedimensional nails created by Ciaté’s Caviar Manicure Kit. And it’s easy to apply: Prep the nail by swiping on a coat from their Paint Pot product. Let it turn slightly sticky and then … Sprinkle with the color pearls that you have chosen (rainbow, black pearls, mother of pearls). Place your finger, one at a time, over the tray and sprinkle the caviar pearls onto your nail, gently tap down to make them adhere … After approximately 20 minutes seal the edges with the clear top coat to strengthen the bond, and reapply top coat daily. Your new look may last up to three to five days. Check it out at http://www.ciate.co.uk/ caviar-manicure.html/

DECEMBER 2012

By Brandon Ballenger

EVERY DECEMBER for four full decades, Fort Lauderdale has watched an aquatic procession of holiday lights, ornaments, and live entertainers sailing down its waterways: The Winterfest Boat Parade. From the first event in 1971 to the 41st this year, Winterfest representatives say the live audience has grown to more than 1 million people – roughly a fifth

The International Festival and Events Association named Winterfest the Top 20th Parade in the World in 1999, and it continues to award the parade honors for its video and TV programming year after year. The festivities have grown to include annual contests, parties, balls, and family days – culminating in the 12-mile parade, whose route begins at the docks west of the Stranahan House, runs east to the Intracoastal, and then north to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach, a mile short of Atlantic Boulevard. joselyn rivera

The Voice of Broward 17-year-old Joselyn Rivera sings on network TV By Jamie Steinberg

J

oselyn Rivera says she was quiet as a child, but something changed when she learned how to sing. In recent years, the budding pop vocalist has performed for crowds at Miami Heat and Dolphins games. And now she’s competing on The Voice, NBC’s answer to American Idol. One of her coaches on the show has been Christine Aguilera, who declared Rivera has a “crazy great range!” Another coach, CeeLo Green, referred to Rivera as “this little thing with a big voice.” But the real secret to her success though might be something another coach, Blake Shelton, noticed: “Joselyn sings with her smile.” Rivera sat down with Lifestyle Publications for this interview... WHO WERE SOME OF THE ARTISTS THAT REALLY INFLUENCED YOU AND GOT YOU TALKING? Well, my mom really introduced me to a lot of music since I was young. I actually fell in love with [the movie] Selena, where Jennifer Lopez plays Selena, the Mexican singer. I really, really fell in love with her songs. And to be specific, one of them was “Como La Flor” in Spanish and the other one was “Biddy Biddy Bom Bom.” Those two songs really got me started in music, and really I took off after that. And then next, of course, is Christina Aguilera. I really, really became obsessed with her first album, especially the songs “I Turn to You” and “Come on Over.” I learned those at the age of 5, and I began singing them over and over again. Christina really inspired me at a young age. And it’s just so surreal to just have her as a coach now! It hasn’t really hit me yet. So I really have to give a lot of credit to Christina and Selena. WHAT WAS IT LIKE HAVING CHRISTINA AGUILERA AS A COACH? I could tell you what I felt when I hugged her after my blind audition. She really looked me in the eyes and she said, “We got this! We’re going to go far! We have so much in common. We’re really going to get this town.” When she told me that, I was in another world. I was on another planet. At that point, I could tell

she was really, really warm person. She’s very loving and she cares about her contestants. ARE YOU HAPPY THAT YOU GOT THE CHANCE TO WORK WITH CHRISTINA BEFORE SHE LEFT THE SHOW? AND HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR EXPERIENCES WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT IF YOU WERE BEING MENTORED BY SHAKIRA OR USHER? It’s been just such a privilege to work with Christina, and I heard the news about Usher and Shakira coming in next season. I’ve always dreamed of being on her team and never would have thought I would end up in her team or even end up on the show in that case. But she’s definitely an inspiration to me. It’s definitely a dream come true, and I’m definitely honored to work with her. I really don’t know what it would be like to work with Shakira and Usher, since I’ve never really worked with them before. But I’m sure I’d look up to them too as well. They’re great artists. IS IT TRUE YOU STARTED OFF SINGING TO A KARAOKE MACHINE WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD? HOW DID YOU GO FROM KARAOKE TO PERFORMING LIVE AND GOING TO THE VOICE? Yeah, basically, I started off with Barbie karaoke. And after that, around the age of 10, I started performing. I became a local performer around my district and other districts as well. And I began performing at corner streets. My mom opened up a company called Artistic Explosion, which is still around. And I was very much a part of it. And we would perform at Disneyworld. That’s how I really, really had such a strong passion for performing. The stage is my home. So I signed with Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan’s husband, to Full Moon. Basically, they started off putting me in little performances like Miami Heat, performing the national anthem and at the Dolphins versus the Jets. I was actually the first performer to perform at the opening of the new Marlins ballpark. So that’s basically been my journey. And that led up to me being on The Voice. And I’m just really, really excited. More at www.joselynrivera.com

The Voice: NBC’s Big Hit Since it premiered in April 2011, NBC’s The Voice has challenged Fox’s American Idol as the nation’s top TV talent show. While Idol still wins the ratings battle overall, the numbers are closer in the coveted 18-47 demographic – a difference of less than one percent. So what makes The Voice so special? The blind audition is a big part. Judges such as Christine Aguilera and Cee Lo Green hear but don’t see the contestants. Danielle Furey A Woman for All Seasons… Mom, Wife, Triathlete – Fighter By Kevin Lane

D

anielle Furey is a resident of Weston, mother of four, and a devoted wife. She also holds a law degree and is a finisher of the toughest one-day race in the world – while nursing a broken elbow. Now she’s preparing for the Marathon Des Sables (MdS), considered by many to be the toughest footrace on the planet. The 156-mile, seven-day ultra marathon stage-race across remote sections of the Sahara Desert is compounded by the extreme weather that includes frequent sandstorms and temperatures that reach 130 degrees during the day – and drop to a low of 30 degrees at night. And if all that wasn’t daunting enough, this past May, Danielle was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, an incurable autoimmune disease. “I have been a lifelong athlete and runner, competed in several Ironman triathlons and qualified for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2009,” Danielle recounted. She went on to say that she is “determined not to let this disease define me, but instead to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure.” To that end, she has created a website, www. outrunningms.com, which she hopes will inspire others to join in the fight to strike out this crippling disease. The race will begin on April 5, 2013, with 800 participants – 80 from the United States. With a ratio of 86 percent male and 14 percent female, Danielle will be one of the few women on the starting line. The course is divided into six stages, each ranging from roughly 20 to 26 miles, with a long stage of roughly 50 miles and a short final stage of roughly 9-13 miles. Two competitors have died during the race, and another was lost in a sandstorm but found nine days later, having lost over 30 pounds. Yet despite the risks, competitors pay entry fees of close to $4,000 – which includes the cost of repatriation of your body in the event of death. While it’s obvious that Danielle is devoting a lot of time to preparing for the race, she still is a fulltime mom and wife. Her four children attend Weston public schools: Brynn is in ninth grade at Cypress Bay High School, Kaelen is in eighth grade at Falcon Cove Middle School, Graham is in the fourth at Everglades Elementary School, and her

Brynn, Kaelen, Rich, Danielle, Taryn and Graham Furey youngest Taryn is also at Everglades in third grade. And they are all athletic. “All of my children play lacrosse in the Weston Warriors program, and they each participate in other sports as well,” Danielle said proudly. “Brynn plays basketball, Kaelen is a runner, Graham plays football for the Weston Warriors, and Taryn is a cheerleader in that program as well.” Mom is quick to state emphatically that school comes first in the Furey household. They know that they need to maintain excellent grades if they wish to continue to play sports…and they do. Danielle met her husband Rich in law school and quickly discovered that they had both been runners in high school. They managed to find time between classes to take long runs and got married right after graduating. They celebrated their first anniversary by running the New York City Marathon. Rich is a partner with the international law firm White & Case. He attends all of the kid’s games, quizzes them on homework, and accompanies Danielle on her long training runs each week. They are both hockey fans and have passed this love on to their kids. Attending Florida Panthers games is one of their favorite things to do as a family. In her spare time… spare time??? She loves to read, usually both a non-fiction and fiction book at the same time. She’s been reading anything she can get her hands on related to MS and is currently “… wading through ‘Curing MS’ by Dr. Howard Weiner. I am learning so much that I didn’t know about this disease,” she explained. Danielle is very well known in the athletic community in Broward County, especially in Western Broward. In 2008, she teamed up with a few other local triathletes to form a charitable sports organization, the Broward Barracudas Triathlon Club. Danielle and her family are members of St. Bonaventure Church, attend mass regularly, and the children are all involved in the religious education program.

All Mixed Up Champion Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale Student Cameron Bevan Wins Title

By Kevin Lane

ameron Bevan cooked up some amazing desserts like rice pudding beignets with cabernet coulis and chocolate cream, light and dark chocolate-covered bacon with rice pudding sauce – Wait, chocolate-covered bacon? “Just about everyone loves sweet and salty together. And bacon has such a rich smoky taste. We’re seeing in so many desserts now – bacon ice cream, bacon crumbled on cake, you name it. It’s a hot new trend, so I figured it would be a hit,” he smiled. And it was! The 28-year-old student from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale recently won the title of “All Mixed Up Champion” on the third and final episode of “All Mixed Up” on Lifetime TV, hosted by celebrity chef and TV personality Ralph Celebrity chef Ralph Pagano Pagano. The student chefs had to complete with an appetizer, entrée and a dessert in 30 minutes. Reflecting on the contest, Cameron said he created some recipe ideas a few days before the shoot, but that everyone had to think on their feet once they knew the exact ingredients they would be provided. And Chef Pagano threw in some extra curves, like cutting down their time or taking away some of their tools. Cameron moved to Fort Lauderdale from Las Vegas in 2011. “It was frightening as I came with just enough money to live on for two weeks, so I had to make something happen fast,” he said. He’s worked part time at several area restaurants to make ends meet, but currently is just focused on his culinary courses.

He added that Chef Marcela Guzman encouraged him to try out for “All Mixed Up.” “Hosting ‘All Mixed Up’ on our campus and having our students compete was one of the most exciting events I’ve seen here,” said Claude Toland, president of The Art Institute. “Cameron Bevan came from behind to win the dessert round and the overall competition, impressing the judges with his creativity by using all three secret ingredients in all three of his desserts.” Chef Jack Kane, academic director of culinary arts, echoed President Toland’s sentiments, saying that the contest “offered our culinary students a wonderful opportunity to show the quality of their culinary education to television audiences across the country. In the end, Cameron won because he was willing to take a creative risk with his desserts – and made it work for the judges.” Like a lot of chefs and chefs-in-themaking, Cameron would like to open his own restaurant some day. Rita & Rick Case Kick Off Bikes For Kids A Tradition That’s Gifted 100,000 Bikes

O

By Kevin Lane

ne of the fondest memories many people have of their childhood is when they got their first bicycle. Parents were often thrilled and terrified – thrilled to see the sheer joy in their children’s faces and their unbridled laughter as they find their balance and bearing, and terrified that they will fall. Of course, children fall, but they get right up and are back, mastering their new-found grown-up transportation. Thanks to Rita and Rick Case, more than 100,000 children’s holidays have been brightened by receiving a bicycle. The couple has been playing Santa Claus since 1982 by collecting bicycles at all of their Rick Case dealerships in South Florida, Cleveland and Atlanta, and donating them to kids. And the tradition continues. Once again, the “Rick Case Bikes for Kids” program kicks into high gear, with bikes being collected through December 20. Thanks to TV stations that provide free public service commercials, police departments who donate unclaimed bicycles, and all of the Rick Case associates who scour their neighborhood and call on friends to donate bikes that are in garages and basements. “Our community really comes together to make sure the children in the area can have the best holiday season possible,” Rick said. Locally, the bikes are distributed through area Boys & Girls Clubs as well as other charity organizations including Big Mama, the Prestige Club and area churches. The “Bikes for Kids” idea started in Ohio, when in addition to numerous automotive dealerships, Rick Case also had 14 family-oriented motorcycle dealerships, selling mopeds and bicycles. “I saw a lot of children come in, their eyes brightened when they saw the gleaming bicycles, but

Rita & Rick Case’s Commitment to Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward 50

Rick and I knew their families weren’t going to be able to afford such a gift. So, we decided to have a bike drive. It was hugely successful,” Rita recalled. The couple, who are among the most philanthropic people in the community, have been active supporters of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County since 1985 when they opened their Acura dealership. Honda had taken over the Jackie Gleason Golf Tournament and some of the Honda corporate people suggested that Rick and Rita get involved in the Boys & Girl’s Club and help them financially and as a volunteer. “We met David Hughes, the director at the time. He showed us the facilities, explained what they did and we decided that it was the perfect organization for us to support,” Rita said. There were three facilities and 1,000 youth… today there are 13 facilities and well over 12,000 youth. The couple have raised over $50 million during the past 25 years. Just last month, Rita and Rick Case celebrated the 25th Anniversary of their hugely successful Yachting Rendezvous, which took place at The Atlantis in the Bahamas. Over the years, that event has raised more than $30 million dollars for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward. Rick Case wrote a book entitled, “Our Customers, Our Friends – What 50 Years in Business has Taught Rita & and Rick Case about Sales Success and Community Service.”

The Magic of Gardening Pine Crest students have green thumbs

“M

ighty oaks from little acorns grow,” is a phrase that could well have motivated the students at Pine Crest School to start a small garden. Of course, the meaning of the phrase is that mighty things come from small beginnings. Under the guidance of Lower School Introductory Science Teacher Mary Beth Graf, first-grade students decided to try their hand at gardening and have since not only discovered that they each have a “green thumb,” but have the joy of planting seeds and watching them grow. Their success has spurred them on to expand their thinking from a small garden to, one day, a bountiful harvest. Walking from Pine Crest’s parking garage to the classrooms and offices, visitors will see a patch of brilliant marigolds nestled in a Lower School alcove. However, upon closer examination, they will see that there is a carefully planted, budding garden with leafy herbs and vegetables inside the midst of those towering marigolds! “Surrounding the garden with the marigolds serves as a natural pesticide and hungry rabbit deterrent,” said Graf. As part of a unit on soil, Graf’s students donned lab coats and picked through samples of rich humus soil and sand with tweezers. They discussed the similarities and differences of each, then visited the nearby school garden to check up on the progress of the beginnings of several small crops – including kale, tomatoes, and a variety of different squashes.

52

DECEMBER 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

Graf said she hopes the crops will produce enough for students to sample a mini-smorgasbord of whole foods straight from the earth! “The science of agriculture is fascinating and often overlooked. Soil is an amazing natural resource and we really don’t think about what is in soil. It is not just about planting and watching things grow. There is a whole lot more involved,” Mary Beth added. “We have planted fruits, vegetables and herbs from seed. We have also added hydroponics towers.” During a spring harvest on the Boca Raton campus, the students in Miss Wanland’s PreKindergarten class had a tasty lesson in harvesting the potatoes. Chef Don Janezic of SAGE Dining Services magically transformed those potatoes into potato chips, which the students enjoyed at lunch time. ”The primary goal of the garden is to teach students the art and science, and the importance of responsibility and healthy eating,” said Pine Crest President Dr. Dana Markham. Gardening is a collaborative effort that comes with natural rewards. Pine Crest School was founded in 1934 by Dr. Mae McMillan, who was known for being progressive and adaptable. Pine Crest School has two campuses, one in Boca Raton and the main campus in Fort Lauderdale, with enrollment at more than 2,600 students. Visit www.pinecrest.edu.or call (954) 492-4103. LP

Saying “I Do” To a Smooth Divorce By Meaghan K. Marro

can run “theDivorces gamut from a

M

ost people who say “I do” usually do not anticipate their marriage ending in divorce. Unfortunately, most relationships have problems, and some ultimately break down and end in divorce. Even in divorce there is choice insomuch as the parties can decide what kind of divorce they want. Divorces can run the gamut from a lengthy divorce full of anger and animosity, to a relatively smooth straightforward divorce. Below are helpful tips for making the divorce process a little less difficult, and hopefully more like the latter. SPEAK WITH ONE ANOTHER. Many people are angry and/or sad when a relationship comes to an end, but it is important not to let your emotions control how you react throughout your divorce process. There is a good chance that you will have to continue to deal with your soon to be former spouse, especially if you have children together. Remember, it may be possible to maintain a friendship after the dust has settled. UNDERSTAND YOUR NEW FINANCIAL REALITY. After the divorce, you will need to be practical about your financial future and plan accordingly. The ability to live within your new means may require that you have to eliminate some of your wants. You may not be able to enjoy some of the luxuries that you enjoyed in the past on a single income. DON’T INVOLVE THE CHILDREN. Never involve your children in the divorce, and never speak negatively about

lengthy divorce full of anger and animosity, to a relatively smooth straightforward divorce.

the other parent to the children. Always remember that your child is 50% of you and 50% of you partner. If you put down your spouse you are ultimately putting down part of your child. Growing up is hard enough for children, and there is no need to add additional stress to their life. COMPROMISE. Be realistic and be prepared to compromise, if you are interested in an amicable smooth divorce. While you may want to take everything from your partner or eliminate their contact with your children, no Court will allow this to happen without compelling reasons. The more willing you are to compromise on some matters, the quicker you and your partner will be able to enter into a fair agreement and preserve your assets and sanity. LIVE FOR THE FUTURE AND NOT IN THE PAST. Divorces are usually a very difficult and emotional time for both parties. You will overcome this obstacle in your life just as you have conquered other life transitions. The sooner a conclusion is reached in a divorce proceeding, the sooner both of you are free to begin new adventures and leave the past behind. LP Meaghan K. The Legacy of King Jewelers: Celebrating a Century as South Florida Premier Luxury Jeweler by Jeffrey Rausch 1912 was a landmark year. The Titanic embarked on her fateful voyage, New Mexico and Arizona joined the union as the 47th and 48th states, and the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel opened its doors on Sunset Boulevard. On the east coast, another prestigious establishment open it’s doors—King Jewelers. Five generations later, the jewelry business founded by Louis King continues to dazzle with precious diamonds and gems, prestigious brands, unique designs, and first-class quality and customer service. It’s a legacy the King family proudly carries. ALL IN THE FAMILY Scott King is the 4th generation of Kings to own and operate the family business, which has its flagship Miami location and a newer store in Nashville that opened in 2008. Considered South Florida’s top appraiser, Scott is the expert gemologist of choice for major insurance companies for replacements and valuations. Born and raised in Miami Beach, Scott grew up in his family’s jewelry store. He left for college in the ‘60s with plans to pursue other dreams. After school, however, he returned to South Florida to help out his father at the store—and the rest is history. Scott’s wife, Maxine, has been the company’s jewelry buyer and president for the last 38 years. Their two sons are positioned to lead the next generation of jewelers, son David opened and now runs the Nashville store and Jono is the company’s CFO. “It’s really special being part of this institution,” says David, who left his career on Wall Street to move home to Florida after the September 11 attacks. “We know our identity and roots and it’s interesting to learn about the earlier generations. Some of the systems we use in the computer are from my great grandfather.” He adds that over the past century, the jewelry business has evolved tremendously in the way of technology. Advancements in diamond cutting, for example, now make it possible to cut a perfect diamond. The pieces have become more complex too, especially the timepieces that are crafted with many more complications conceptualized and crafted by cutting edge technology. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years, however, is the King family’s commitment to delivering the highest quality of customer service to their clients, as well as, the most magnificent jewelry and timepieces from around the globe. “We pick all of our diamonds literally by hand,” says David, who adds that they are very selective about the gems they display in their showcases. “We select the highest quality piece for the best value in each category.”

The goal is to match every client with the perfect piece of jewelry that suits their style and personality at the best value. There are products and price points for everyone, which have helped the business become the personal jeweler to many generations of South Florida families. “We like to focus on family heirlooms and build lifetime relationships,” says David. On any given day, you might also run into celebrities in our salons. Famous clients have included the Rat Pack, Elton John, Carmen Electra, Paul Newman and professional athletes’ to name a few. LIQUID FACELIFTS:

THE NONSURGICAL ALTERNATIVE

Skin Center 6550 North Federal Hwy., Suite 330 Fort Lauderdale, FL 33308 (954) 903-0332 SkinCenter.com

For over 35 years, Roger H. Stewart, MD has been a pioneer in Cosmetic Dermatology and Skin Cancer treatment, employing state-of-the-art technology in his East Fort Lauderdale practice. As we age, our faces begin to lose collagen and elastin which contributes to sagging features and the formation of wrinkles, lines and folds. One of the most common techniques for reducing these visible signs of aging is the use of injectable dermal fillers. Fillers are extremely versatile and can be used to treat specific areas of concern such as lips or smile lines, and can also be combined in an advanced, non-surgical technique commonly referred to as a “Liquid Facelift.” A liquid facelift helps achieve an overall lift of facial features as well as restoration of your natural, curved facial contours for a more rested, energetic look and a friendlier smile. Alone or as a part of a liquid facelift, fillers are used for much more than lines and wrinkles. Under eye bags and dark circles can be masked, eyes can be opened up and lids lifted, jowls can be raised and diminished, natural shape can be restored to

58

sunken cheeks or temple areas, the corners of the mouth can be lifted, bumps on the nose can be hidden and even bony hands can be filled to bring back a plump, youthful look. A liquid facelift involves the use of advanced dermal fillers, sometimes in combination with Botox® or Dysport®. The dermal fillers used are among a group of 2nd generation injectables that provide more enduring results (six months to a year) than earlier products. These advanced dermal fillers includes Juvederm®, Radiesse®, Restylane®, ® Perlane , and Belotero®. Each of these fillers has unique attributes that work in their own special way to rejuvenate specific areas of the face. In general, dermal fillers replace lost volume in the face and help the body regenerate its own collagen. Most of the fillers are comprised of natural substances produced by the body. Different fillers are used for different areas and results – Belotero, for example, is a relatively new filler from the makers of Radiesse with a unique ability to integrate with the tissues of your skin – providing exceptional results around the lips and under the eyes. Dermal fillers can be used to lift or contour any number of facial features and, in the hands of an expert,

DECEMBER 2012 | LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM

can be combined to create an exceptional overall result similar to a facelift but without the cost, surgery or downtime. For more information on injectable fillers and liquid facelifts including “before & after” treatment photos, visit www.skincenter.com. To set up a free consultation with Roger H. Stewart, M.D. to discuss injectable fillers and/or any of a range of treatment options, call Skin Center today at (954) 903-0332.

SHOULD HO, HO, HO TURN INTO NO, NO, NO THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? TIPS ON HOW TO SHOP SAFE AND SMART In spite of the continued economic slowdown, each year holiday spending continues to increase. From 2010 to 2011 holiday spending increased 4.1% and expectations indicate spending is likely to be even higher this year. With millions of Americans still facing financial problems with unemployment and debt, now is not the time to overspend. To keep holiday costs down, consumers need to create holiday budget strategies that help them save. New shopping holidays seem to pop up every year as retailers clamor for consumer dollars. To help you distinguish between the real deals and the duds I have rounded up the best shopping tips to help you get great gifts and not get over your head in debt! MAKE YOUR LIST. Create a list of all of the gifts you need to buy for the holidays now. Write down specific items you want to buy for each person and do some research to determine the estimated cost of each gift. Be as specific as possible to help you avoid impulse shopping in the store, which always increases your holiday spending. CHECK IT (MORE THAN) TWICE. Once you have your list, check it regularly to compare it to sales and special offers you find.

Check online, check your local newspapers and keep an eye out for sales. Every time you find a deal on a gift that’s on your list, write down the information for the sale and how much you will save. If you find a better deal later, change the information so you always have the information on the best deal written down. For more expensive gifts make certain to shop around as prices can vary widely. DON’T DEVIATE. Retailers put in hard work to make attractive store displays intended to pull you into spending more money throughout the holiday season. Shopping with a list decreases the potential for impulse purchases, but only if you can commit to sticking to your list. Remember, if you didn’t intend on buying something, then even if the items are on sale this increase the amount you planned to spend. MAKE FRIENDS ONLINE. “Like” stores that you want to shop at on Facebook and Follow them on Twitter. Many retailers will offer exclusive deals and promotions to their social media audience that you won’t find anywhere else. STAY SAFE. Only shop from stores that you recognize and only enter credit card information if you know the

DO YOU HAVE AN

OPTIMAL THYROID? THYROID HORMONE RESISTANCE IS MORE COMMON THAN PEOPLE REALIZE. “I HAVE TRIED EVERY DIET KNOWN TO MAN (OR MOMS) THESE LAST FEW YEARS – TO NO AVAIL.” Alyson continued to tell me her story. “For example, this past summer, my best friend flew me to their home in Sonoma for an entire month. We ate nothing but organic everything, lean protein, I drank 150 ounce-plus of water a day and did a high intensity workout every morning mixing up interval training with boot camp at her gym. In exactly 30 days – I lost a grand total of THREE pounds. I didn’t even lose the initial ‘water weight’ everyone else loses.” I empathized, “It’s hard to stay motivated with minimal results.” “I’m willing to starve myself, if that would work. I even did two rounds of hCG. My wallet’s lighter, but that’s about it.” “The FDA recently published a website, www.fda.gov/hcgdiet, detailing how hCG diet products are illegal, and how restrictive diets such as that one can cause electrolyte disturbances, an irregular heartbeat and are potentially fatal.” I continued, “But looking at your diet history, I don’t think the problem is one of eating too much.” “Dr. Woliner, what else could it be? I have a friend that blew up taking Abilify for her depression, and another while on Actos for diabetes, but I’m not on any medications.” “It’s true that many drugs have

weight gain as a common side effect [1]. But there are other causes of weight gain. With your other symptoms of cold intolerance, fatigue, and constipation, I’m thinking that you have an untreated thyroid condition [2].” “I begged my other doctors to treat me for that, but they all said no.” “Some doctors focus too much on lab tests without considering the patient’s history and physical exam findings [3]. Thyroid hormone resistance is more common than people realize.” Alyson sat with a puzzled look on her face. “So, even if these doctors said my tests were normal, I might still have a thyroid problem? [4]” “The word ‘normal’ has many meanings. There is a difference between ‘common’ and ‘optimal’ [5]. Rather than using a range that includes people who are overweight and being treated for high cholesterol and other conditions, perhaps it would be better to use narrower ranges of persons who feel ‘dandy’ [6].” “Does anyone even use that word anymore?” “My practice is built on patientto-patient referrals. Just liking my bedside manner is not enough to convince your friends to see me. You have to glow. So yes, I do plan on making you feel dandy.” After finishing Alyson’s physical exam, my staff used our Korr indirect calorimetry machine to measure her metabolic rate [7].

DR. KENNETH WOLINER Board Certified Family Physician 9325 Glades Road, Suite 104 Boca Raton, FL 33434 561-314-0950 holisticfamilymed.com

“You’re at ‘minus 20%’. That’s one of slowest metabolism’s I’ve ever seen!” “How do we fix that?” “I use a holistic approach that combines behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, and of course medications [8,9]. I prefer to use T3 based drugs as they have been shown to cause significantly more weight loss than T4 drugs such as Synthroid alone [10].” As I ramped up Alyson’s dose of thyroid medication, her fatigue and other symptoms began to resolve. To be on the safe side, I periodically rechecked her EKG and bone density, which remained normal [11]. “Dr. Woliner, your scale says I only lost 49 pounds, but at home, naked, I’m down 51!” Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a boardcertified family physician in private practice in Boca Raton. He can be reached at 9325 Glades Road, #104, Boca Raton, FL, 33434; 561-314-0950; knw6@cornell.edu; www.holisticfamilymed.com

WHY BUY AN EXISTING BUSINESS? GOODWILL! I am not sure what event I was attending but the topic was creativity, getting out of your comfort zone, and thinking outside the box. The speaker challenged the crowd to hold up their arm that had a watch on it. Mine was my left. My watch is always on my left wrist. She asked everyone to take it off and put it on your other arm, and leave it there! Try it, very uncomfortable…. What happened next is exactly why existing businesses and franchises are great investments, and any future business owner thinking of a pure start up should take heed. Some of us moved our watches and kept them there for the rest of the presentation. Most moved their watch for a few minutes and felt uncomfortable and quickly returned them to their “correct” arm. Still others REFUSED to even move their watch! WOW, they couldn’t even move their watch for a minute!! The power of habit is huge!!! Imagine trying to create a new brand, new product, or new service. The ability to succeed is so overwhelming in my estimation, that you are much better off buying a business that has established customers with established habits or a franchise with a proven business model: Here’s a few ingredients in what we sometimes flippantly call goodwill, but have huge value because there are customers that are habitually using the service, product or location:

The GOODWILL HOT LIST: What to look for to buy an existing business: UÊ Established UÊ Location UÊ Phone Number UÊ Pricing structure UÊ Name UÊ Logo UÊ Color scheme UÊ Product reliability UÊ Employees UÊ Value to customer UÊ Warm feeling by customer UÊ Familiarity by customer UÊ Advertisements UÊ Networks UÊ Website? Domain Name? UÊ Business model UÊ How many more can you list Existing businesses are probably the most underrated investment in our free enterprise system! Alternative investments to buying an existing business: What do you think? UÊ Savings/CD’s- what return? UÊ Stocks- no thanks! UÊ Real estate- missed the boat! UÊ Vegas- usually a no win. UÊ Start up businesses- no way!

business mentor that you can trust. Understand the process takes time and that you need to be patient. However, once you find the right business or franchise, you must be decisive and move quickly! Great deals on businesses and franchises sell fast and the way to spot a great deal is to be educated on exactly what to look for. As I have outlined here in this article, goodwill is very real and valuable. If you don’t believe in the power of habit and goodwill, wear you watch on your other arm for a week!!

Existing businesses- Count me in! My advice for finding a good small business or franchise is simple. You have to get into the marketplace. Search the internet, call a good business broker, tell your circle of influence and then have a team of advisors to help you decide on what would fit for you. A good team of advisors includes a good business broker, accountant, attorney, and a LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | DECEMBER 2012

Grille 401 Steak and...Sushi? By Shannon Marie Tarrant

G

rille 401 is one of the newest hot spots to join the scene in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Conveniently situated on the corner of East Las Olas Boulevard and Southeast Fifth Avenue, this epicurean delight beckons you from the street. The view of their brilliantly lit casings of wine are enough to draw you in. As you step through the doors, you’re welcomed into a modern, rustic setting that exudes the warmth of a traditional steak house. Local artist Marcia K. Moore’s works are featured throughout, adding a Florida feel to this intimate setting that lends itself to socializing. As you’re seated, the abstract wooden design on the back wall draws your eye to the bustling, open kitchen where head Chef Rick Schwager and his team use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. You may decide to start with their signature appetizer, the Crispy Crab

Savory Lunchtime Fare Grille 401 is also open for lunch, with their full dinner menu offerings in addition to a Light & Healthy seasonal menu available from 11:30am-4:00pm. With options ranging from $10-$13, even the most price conscious individual can enjoy a gourmet lunch. Some of this seasons offerings include menu items such as: Fritters. Don’t be deterred by the heavy fritters of your past – the shredded phyllo dough that surrounds the crab, shrimp and risotto center is light and airy. There’s also wide variety of sushi options. One of our favorites is the Osaka Style Pressed Sushi – fresh tuna, avocado, sticky rice, and spicy tuna presented in a stacked fashion. Alternately, you may want to try one of their fresh salads as a starter. heir Steak, Gorgonzola and Spinach Salad has the tartness of the apples, combined with the marinated tenderloin, spiced pecans, cherry tomatoes and goat cheese. Or you could try something a little more light and earthy, like the Fresh Beet and Goat Cheese Salad. It’s a delicious combination of fresh, roasted stripped candied beets with spiced pecans and is topped off with a herb vinaigrette dressing and a warm, panko-encrusted

Basil Pasta with Goat Cheese- Penne pasta tossed with basil pesto and topped with crumbled goat cheese. Grilled Chicken Sandwich- Herb marinated chicken breast served on a toasted bun with basil mayo, bibb lettuce, avocado, and tomato, served with peanut and ginger coleslaw. Barbecued Salmon- Fresh fillet of Atlantic salmon prepared on the woodfire grill and basted with house-made barbecue sauce, served with kale salad.

goat cheese. As for the entrees, the Prime Rib Sandwich is served sliced thin on a baguette, with horseradish sauce, au jus, and a side of shoestring fries,. The Truffle Fettuccini Alfredo with Wild Mushrooms is deliciously creamy. You can also add grilled chicken or shrimp to this delightful dish. Being a licensed and registered provider of Certified Angus Beef, it would be a shame not to try one of their perfectly seasoned steaks, prepared on their wood-fire grill and accompanied by a salt-crusted baked potato with all the fixings. We

66

recommend the Bone-In Ribeye. Don’t forget to leave room for one of their fresh in-house desserts. After much deliberation, we found ourselves trying one of almost everything. The carrot cake was moist and warm with a creamy frosting. The key lime pie was delectable with a lime zest and pecan crust, filled with a perfectly flavored, tangy center. The bread pudding is served warm with a berry sauce that will leave you wishing it were socially acceptable to lick your plate. Before we left, we got a peek at the upper level, which offers additional seating overlooking the main dining

area. Also located on the upper level is a private dining room that seats 12. With a big screen TV and all the necessary audiovisual connections, it provides a great space for meetings and private events. To round off the night, we made a stop in the bar, which is warmly lit and decorated, offering high top booth seating and stools. Inventive offerings combined with a hip location make Grille 401 a destination to add to your must-dine list. 401 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 954 767-0222 Hours: Mon- Thu 11:30am-11:00pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-12:00am, Sun 11:30am-10:00pm
