Lifestyle

HAPPY HOLIDAYS – BELIEVE The year is coming to a close and I am grateful for the success at Lifestyle Media Group. A little more than 10 years ago, I was sitting in my dining room with a vision to grow a business that would build a better community: A world class magazine company supporting our community, company and clients. My goal was 10 magazines in 10 years to fulfill this dream. I also envisioned an elite marketing, creative and editorial team that would be the envy of other firms. This year we not only achieved the objective, but met my expectations of being poised for further growth. Now, I have the privilege to welcome the former Editorin-Chief of the South Florida Business Journal to the Lifestyle Media Group Team. Kevin Gale joins the journey to put us on the pinnacle of being the most relevant local content provider to our readers while elevating the reputation of our advertising partners. He brings the experience and expertise to ensure a sustainable media company. I am proud to introduce him as our Editor-inChief! Other publications try to cultivate the market, however, only Lifestyle Magazines has given its heart and soul to support our city and those organizations in it, throughout the years. This investment has been beneficial to all concerned. Feedback tells me our readers and advertising partners place a great value on the effort and the mutually beneficial results. Our commitment is to continue this endeavor. With Kevin on board, we have furthered our pledge to elevate our reputation, as well as that of our clients and community. We will work together to help everyone achieve greatness. Speaking of greatness, in this issue we look at celebrities who have chosen to make our community their hometown. From sports icons to those we see on television and the movie screen, our city has provided all the comforts the stars desire. I hope you find this feature interesting and insightful, as well as an affirmation you also made a great decision to live right here! I conclude with the hope that your year has met your expectations, you have achieved all your goals, and the New Year looks even brighter. If it hasn’t, I encourage you to continue to press on to attain your dreams. Look up, get up and never give up! Believe. Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanza and Happy New Year! As always, enjoy the Lifestyle. Jim Norton, Publisher jim@lifestylemagazinegroup.com

Clean Bill of Health Broward Hospitals Named “Top Performers”

Heated bus-shelter seats by Grand Central Station

Hello Sunny South Florida Broward tourism launches a $6.5 million advertising campaign As a South Floridian you have no problem picturing yourself lounging on a sunny beach on any given afternoon. But for prospective “snow birds,” that image takes a little more creative effort to paint. That’s why Greater Fort Lauderdale tourism officials are banking on a new multimillion-dollar advertising campaign to boost interest in the destination and attract more overnight visitors in 2014. Using the theme “SPF (Sunny Partner Focus) 2014, We’ve Got You Covered,” the marketing initiative will include major consumer events in key markets such as New York. One ad campaign will feature heated bus-shelter seats in the shape of lounge chairs by Grand Central Station in January. “We are once again raising the bar with a $6.5 million advertising program, the most ever spent in the bureau’s history, and aim to shatter our record-breaking tourism numbers in 2014,” said Nicki E. Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. Similar marketing efforts are planned for Chicago in February, Washington, D.C. in March and São Paulo, Brazil, in April, as part of the “We’ve Got You Covered” road show.

DECEMBER 2013 | LMGFL.COM

It has been 21 years since basketball great Earvin “Magic” Johnson shocked the world by announcing that he was HIV positive. Coming full circle, Johnson was in Broward recently to dedicate the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center, the first of its kind in the U.S. The museum, to open early next year, was funded by a $94,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Broward, and from 34 individual donations of at least $1,200 each. The museum will feature an “AIDS Chronology,” a multimedia timeline of the disease, and a room where people can video personal stories for a “virtual quilt” of memories. Beyond its importance as an archival record, museum President Steven Sagon sees the facility as a tourist attraction.

The Joint Commission is the leading independent U.S. health care inspection agency. Each year it rates U.S. hospitals for their commitment to quality and helping improve health care for the public, based on annual data about clinical-processes shown to be the best treatments for certain conditions. This not-for-profit organization accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs. The good news: This year’s report named 16 Broward medical centers as “Top Performers,” including Broward Health Coral Springs, Holy Cross Hospital, and Plantation General Hospital for their excellence in treating heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia, as well as their surgical care. Also included was Broward Health Imperial Point and Westside Regional Medical Center.

Plans for Sustainability Go Solar A $1.575 million grant will reduce the cost of installing solar panels in Broward Broward County continues to make strides in the battle for sustainability. After trimming the time it takes to obtain a rooftop solar permit to 30 minutes with online permitting, the Go SOLAR Florida team is now tackling the issue of cost. Since most expenses to install solar panels are “soft costs”—anything other than the equipment itself, such as installation and maintenance—the U.S. Department of Energy issued a Rooftop Solar Challenge II to encourage local communities to cut those extra fees. The reward: A $1.575 million grant. The Go SOLAR Florida team, which includes nine Broward cities, the city of Venice in Sarasota County, the Florida Solar Energy Center and Florida Atlantic University, was one of only 8 recipients of the Rooftop Solar Challenge to receive the award nationwide. Over the next 2½ years the money will help fund everything from technical assistance to financing programs to a solar energy festival, currently set for June 6-7 in Fort Lauderdale.

Chatham House Offers Authentic Fresh Seafood in a Charming New England Setting streetscapes Aandttractive walkways are just part of the renaissance underway along AIA in the city of Lauderdaleby-the-Sea. At the heart of the resurgence is a new restaurant that is dazzling guests with an outstanding menu, seaside atmosphere and friendly service. That restaurant is Chatham House, located on AIA, just one block south of Commercial Boulevard. My recent dining experience at the Chatham House was in a word: outstanding. The staff is exceptionally friendly and the ambiance is warm and inviting with plenty of New England charm. My dinner companion and I settled in to find a menu offering dishes to satisfy most culinary tastes. After ordering one of the Chatham House specialty martinis, we dove into the

appetizers, beginning with a hot, hearty bowl of New England clam chowder. It was the finest I’ve had in a long time, with just the right amount of kick and an abundance of fresh clams. The jumbo lump crab cakes are a house specialty and rightfully so. Filled with fresh lump crab meat, the crab cakes are served with a tangy avocado puree and a portion so generous it could have been an entrÊe. For the main course I ordered the signature cedar plank baked salmon which is topped with a delectable citrus mustard glaze and served with jasmine rice pilaf, fresh steamed asparagus and frizzled leeks on the side. My companion ordered the savory Angus petit filet mignon with twin lobster tails. The filet was so tender you could cut it with a fork and the lobster was firm and succulent. The creamy mashed potatoes and onion strings were delicious sides.

by Michael Mracek For dessert, I highly recommend the pistachio pound cake, made from scratch on-site daily. The presentation alone was worth the order. The moist cake is served warm, topped with vanilla frosting and a scoop of pistachio ice cream surrounded by an assortment of fresh fruit. Our second selection was the classic amaretto cheesecake drizzled with a sweet raspberry vanilla sauce, which was creamy and divine. There’s a new Sunset Menu, too, that is price-fixed at $19.95 and served daily from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Another plus is that unlike other restaurants in this seaside town, Chatham House has its own parking lot with ample free parking just steps from the front door.

TOP Five BROWARD’S BEST BBQ 01. Dixie Pig BBQ Dixie bills itself as ‘Back Yard Barbecuing at its Best!!’ and it’s pretty close to the truth. The place feels like someone’s backyard, with makeshift gazebos for seating outside and nothing more than a tiled porch for ‘inside’ eating, lit by yellow fluorescents—way Redneck. But their ribs are unbeatable, crisp on the outside and soft, fall-off-thebone inside. The sauce is North Carolina-style vinegar-base, and they bottle their own, with Gold (honey mustard), Hot, Sweet (nice and thick) and Vinegar variations. The sign on the wall says it all “Mountain Dew Sold Here. Ya-hoo.” 4495 N. Dixie Highway, Oakland Park 954-772-5977

What makes for great Bar-B-Que? Some say it’s the way the meat is cooked, for others it has to do with the sauce. We searched far and wide to discover these gems, some more diamond-in-the-rough than others, but all tasty treats.

You don’t do business for 29 years in one location unless you are doing something right. Starting out as a Cajun-style ribs & wings place, with some nice seafood gumbo and Louisiana shrimp dishes, they have expanded the menu to include

‘nouveau’ American tastes—such as really original hot raspberry chicken wings that are a knockout. They also have the hands-down best BBQ chicken—meaty, moist, tasty—and baby-back ribs that really do fall off the bones. Lots of pig paraphernalia and Mardi Gras bric-a-brac dress up the place, and their BBQ flavor has an Asian influence that makes it more interesting than your average sauce. 105 SW 6th St., Pompano 954-946-5590

03. Rock n Roll Ribs

02. Chez Porky’s

Okay, so it’s a chain, and it feels like a chain—bright, noisy, with a fast-food approach. Having said that, they do a few things really well, which is why they have lines out the door. One of their standouts, and not common for BBQ places, is a slow-smoked brisket that is moist and delicious. Also, their pulled pork has just the right burned bits to give it a little chew. They serve a lot of New Orleans style food, too, such as Gumbo and Jambalaya; the Mojo Crystal, their hot sauce, is a hallmark of their regional taste.

Owned by the drummer from Iron Maiden, there is heavy metal music on the big screen and enough platinum records and guitars for a rock museum. What really rocks here is the pulled pork, which melts in your mouth, and the ribs aren’t bad either. The sauces are sweet; the hot sauce has a nice tang and the mustard sauce is very tasty. Overall it’s the most upscale BBQ environment out there, with drop lighting, dark wood and window booths. The sauce for the fried onion rings is take-home good. Great coleslaw, too. 4651 State Rd. 7, Coral Springs 954-345-7429 (RIBZ)

05. Jack’s Bar-B-Q Above all, Jack’s brings the smoke: In the parking lot is an old barrel smoker, burning oak logs that are stacked along side. Dubbed “The Smokehouse of the South,” that smell alone is enough to draw you inside, where you can get beef ribs, baby backs, smoked chicken or pulled pork. Because they smoke their meats, you get that pink look inside, tasty yet firm, enhanced by their molasses-based sauce. They’ve got some nice sides, too, like collard greens and cornbread. The inside is nothing fancy, just simple tables with rolls of paper towels for when things get sloppy; there’s a drive-through pickup if you want to eat at home. 500 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 954-567-9595

Rick Case and his wife Rita break ground on the new VW dealership.

Bigger, Faster, Better THE NEW RICK CASE VW DEALERSHIP IS THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD. BUT IT’S NOT JUST FOR SHOW. By J.P Faber

n a hot day in August, construction magnate Terry Stiles took the podium at a topping off ceremony for a new building his crew was racing to complete: A Volkswagen dealership in a strip of Davie along I-75 that borders Weston. Behind him a massive slab of pre-cast concrete, decorated with U.S., Florida and Styles Corp. flags, was readied for its final hoist to the top. “I just wanted to thank my guys for all their hard work,” he said, noting that two crews had worked 12 hours a day, six days a week to erect the structure in record time. “Of course it’s still not fast enough for Rick Case,” he said, with a deliberate wink. The structure that Styles’ workers were laboring to wrap up is purportedly the largest VW dealership in the world, both in terms of height and square footage. Its job: To house so many new VWs that any combination

of color, style, interior and option package would be available to a would-be customer. Like some scene out of the Matrix, where rows and rows of armaments pop up to offer a seemingly infinite choice, the idea is that you can dial up your dream auto and have it available immediately. It’s also the latest jewel in the crown for Case, one of South Florida’s auto dealership kingpins, with a reputation for being driven and getting things done. “We’re just trying to make it easy for the customer,” says Case, whose auto dealership empire includes Nissan, Volvo, Toyota, VW, Fiat and Honda outlets. “To make it fast and easy to buy a car.” That may seem like an obvious tactic in a world of incredible choice options, but it’s really a new wrinkle in an old business—and just the latest in Case’s “We’re just trying to arsenal of tools to attract make it easy for the new customers and retain customer. To make it existing ones. Among his earlier fast and easy to buy innovations: Doubling the a car,” says Rick Case. factory warranties of his cars. Which means that if a carmaker guarantees its vehicles for five years and/or 10,000 miles, Case doubles that to 10 years and/or 20,000 miles. Which is one reason that he stopped carrying lines of American cars 20 years ago (“They’re better now, but back then I was constantly doing warranty work,” he says.)

The largest VW dealership in the world is the latest jewel in the crown for Rick Case.

Another perk for customers: A discount gasoline center, where Case sells fuel to his customers at cut-rate prices. “We buy tankers and sell the gas at wholesale prices,” he says. “But better still are the car washes. All you have to do is pull up and get a car wash.” He also lures customers back with a rewards card program, so that every time they buy a car from a Rick Case dealership they earn points toward future discounts. “The Rick Case rewards save you hundreds, even thousand of dollars—and the car washes are free!” As for the new VW dealership, Case’s superlatives are matched by some record-breaking figures. At 95 feet high, it actually is the tallest, and

at 328,000 square feet, it actually is the largest VW dealership in the world. Case would have made it larger, but it was the biggest he could get the city of Davie to approve. When it comes on line this month (December) it will house 800 cars and 200 employees, most of them armed with iPads so they can instantly supply information to customers who will travel with them by elevator to one of eight floors, all stocked with different models, all basking in the glow of LED lighting. It’s all part of the Case here-andnow approach to sales, including keeping models of the competition in house. “If they say I’m going to look at [another make] we’ll let them try it

right then,” he says. Case, meanwhile, continues to push the envelope of both the art and science of selling cars. Last year he celebrated his 50th year in the business, and this year he’s announced a three-year sponsorship agreement with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In exchange, Rick Case automobiles will be on display at BCPA—along with signage, playbill ads and a lobby kiosk. “I just love the business,” says Case. “I love dealing with people.” That is fortunate, since 600,000 BCPA patrons will be filing past his new car displays each year. And if they want a particular VW, there’s certain to be one in stock. Q LMGFL.COM | DECEMBER 2013

Broward’s Winningest Coach NSU’S UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL IS THE REIGNING STATE CHAMPION, WHICH IS WHY SO MANY COLLEGES KEEP TRYING TO STEAL ITS SECRET WEAPON. by ryan cortes

he first time colleges called Roger Harriott and asked him politely to leave his job and join their teams he wasn’t even a state champion. Not anymore. Harriott, who took over the high school football program at NSU’s University School in 2007, hasn’t had a losing season since—including the 2010-2012 years of 12-1,12-1, and 14-1. But the best was last year, when Harriott steered his squad to a 13-0 record and a 24-17 win in the Class 3A state championship game against a team from Madison, FL. “Every team has a different personality and last year’s team just was determined to win,” Harriott says. Funny thing is, most people didn’t think Harriott would still be the coach last year. He had earlier accepted a job offer to become the running-backs coach at Syracuse University before having a change of heart. “It was the most agonizing decision my wife Merisa and I had to make,” he says. “It was a very flattering opportunity.” After thinking things through, however, Harriott decided to stay. “We felt like that opportunity might disrupt our family dynamic. So we decided to turn it back around and come back to University School. It’s been nothing but a blessing.” That hasn’t stopped college football coaches from ringing Harriott’s phone, however. It’s only gotten worse since he won the Class 3A state title last year, including the Sun Sentinel naming him one of the top candidates for the vacant FAU head coach gig. “It has been a difficult process because there’ve been several intercollegiate programs that have offered me various positions, just recently,” says Harriott. “It’s just humbling, to be honest with you.” What keeps Harriott at University School, the high school on the Davie campus of Nova Southeastern University, is what he calls the school’s “therapeutic environment,” which gives students a safe place to grow. “It’s just a very heartwarming and welcoming place.” Harriott, a former running back for St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Villanova University, also thrives on the opportunities that football presents for teaching life lessons to high school students. Just recently, Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin made the news because he left the team amid reports that he was bullied. Harriott didn’t shy away from talking about it with his team.

“From a leadership standpoint you always want to take current events and help kids realize why it’s so important to balance their emotions and make appropriate decisions,” Harriott says. “Those are learning lessons—and a great teaching tool.” The hope for fans and supporters of the University School football team is that Harriott cares so much about shaping young people that he’ll pass on bigger money for college football. That and his love of South Florida, of course. “What I love the most about Fort Lauderdale is the diversity of our culture here,” he says. “We’re extremely accepting in regards to appreciating each other for our differences. Not to mention the weather.” Q

Good Will Painting LOCAL ARTIST RAISES THOUSANDS FOR CHARITY BY: IVETTE FIGUEROA

S

ometimes, extraordinary things can come from humble beginnings. As head custodian at Westchester Elementary in Coral Springs, you would never assume that Joseph Gormley would come to stand next to celebrities like LeBron James and Mario Chalmers, raising thousands of dollars for charity. Joseph’s story can be traced back to James Truslow Adams’ ideals for the American Dream—a dream that has carried Joseph through his journey of self-discovery. Born and raised in Glasgow, Scottland, Joseph moved to Florida 10 years ago when he met and fell and love with his American wife, Erin Ruth. He was always the artistic type, having attended college in Scotland to be a graphic designer, but it wasn’t until his wife bought him a set of watercolor paints for Christmas in 2006, that he truly began to realize his own slice of the American Dream. “My wife saw my artistic talents and thought that painting would be a great hobby for me to do in my free time. To my surprise, I came to truly enjoy it. I tried all types of styles and mediums—my favorite being acrylic pop art,” says Joseph. “It has taken me six years to find my true style for the brand Joseph Gormley Art and I am still learning.” In April of 2012, Joseph’s “wee hobby” evolved into somewhat of a hometown phenomenon. “I painted a portrait of Neil Lennon, the Head Coach of my favorite Scottish Soccer team, Celtic FC. My artwork was given to a website called CQN (Celtic Quick News) and was put on eBay to raise money for an 11-year-old girl in Scotland who needed help for an overseas cancer treatment,” recalls Joseph. Within days, his painting raised $8,000 for her treatment. “It was such an awesome feeling, knowing that I had done something to make a difference in someone else’s life.

70

DECEMBER 2013 | LMGFL.COM

After that moment I knew I wanted to help others… and that I could use my gift of painting to do it,” he says. Since then, Joseph’s artwork has graced the walls of the Sun Life Stadium, the BB&T Center, and the homes of dozens of celebrities. His paintings have been seen and signed by celebrities like Rod Stewart, David Beckham, Steven Tyler, Wimbledon winner Andy Murray, ex-Miami Hurricane Bennie Blades, Seattle Seahawks players Marshawn Lynch and quarterback Russell Wilson. And he has raised money for several charitable organizations, including The Osacar Knox Appeal, The Yorkhill Children’s Foundation, The Eilidh Brown Memorial Fund, The Prestige Club, and The Boys and Girls Club. “This is just the beginning of my American Dream,” says Joseph. “One day I hope to reach my goal of raising $1 million for charity. Coming to America and making a million for myself, that’s boring—it’s been done. But, coming to America and raising a million for other people—that will tell people, long after I’m gone, about what kind of man I wanted to be. My artwork is a legacy I will be proud to leave behind.” Q To check out Joseph’s art and his future fundraising events, visit www.josephgormley.com.

Business Report Card A Good Year For Broward Economic Development

Alliance CEO Bob Swindell overlooks downtown Fort Lauderdale

By J.P. Faber

E

ach fall the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance announces its achievements in economic development at an annual mega meeting. This year’s presentation at the Signature Grand in Davie marked the Alliance’s 50th birthday—it was first founded as the Broward Industrial Board in 1963—and drew a record audience of 650. One big focus was on new transportation initiatives underway or planned for Broward County, one reason why Dave Barger, president and CEO of JetBlue Airways, was the keynote speaker. He used the occasion to reveal expansion plans for the airline at Fort LauderdaleHollywood International Airport. Barger’s report was just one of a bevy of announcements about new companies, new jobs and, equally important, retained jobs—those that might have gone elsewhere without incentives to stay. Altogether the alliance, Broward County’s official public/private partnership for economic development, reported that it helped attract 22 new company relocations and expansions during its 201213 fiscal year ending Sept. The result: more than 1,700 new value-added jobs, nearly 1,500 retained jobs and more than $180 million in new capital investment. Some of the companies that relocated or expanded in Broward County were: • Actavis, a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in Davie, is adding 220 new jobs and retaining 509 jobs, and will make a $40.5 million capital investment. • Anthem Education, a Fort Lauderdale headquarterd company for post-secondary educational institutions, is adding 70 new jobs and retaining 85. • Citrix, the leading software developer with headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, is adding 200 new jobs and making a $7.5 million capital investment.

74

DECEMBER 2013 | LMGFL.COM

fest§ How to enjoy the greatest show on H2O

BY Ivette Figueroa

W

hen you think of sunny South Florida, a winter wonderland with spectacular holiday lights, ornaments and whimsical decorations is not the image that dances through your mind. Yet, every December, for more than four decades, Fort Lauderdale transforms its waterways into a dazzling aquatic procession of maritime merriment. The Seminole Hard Rock’s Annual Winterfest Boat Parade, which many revelers call “the greatest show on H2O,” explodes onto the New River with more than 100 vessels, ranging in size from mega yachts to paddle boats, all gratuitously adorned in holiday splendor. The floating holiday party kicks off with an explosion of fireworks from a special barge as the flotilla starts on its 12-mile route at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, departing from the New River docks near the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The carnival convoy travels east past the historic Stranahan House and Riverside Hotel, moving down the New River before turning north on the Intracoastal Waterway. From there, the parade proceeds to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach. Since its maiden voyage in 1971, the Winterfest Boat Parade has grown from a local celebration into an international holiday festival. It inspires community pride and increases awareness of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area as a flood of tourists join the festivities each year. “My involvement in Winterfest goes back about 20 years,” says Winterfest Chairman Ken Ortner. “I believe in giving back to my community and Winterfest is just one way I do so. Winterfest is a wonderful family event that has been a great economic benefit to Greater Fort Lauderdale.” This year’s theme, “Passport to Paradise,” brings a global flare to the parade. From Eiffel Tower masts to Mariachi bands on deck, boaters are encouraged to take you on a trip around the world. “Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is proud to

be a part of the Winterfest Boat Parade for another year,” says Michael Volkert, president of the parade’s lead sponsor, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. “This landmark celebration continues to be a holiday staple, highly anticipated by the community, and made possible through the dedication and creativity of our philanthropic leaders.”

Says John D. Brant, executive vice president at Patriot National Insurance Group (another parade sponsor), “At Patriot, we believe in supporting our community and nothing embodies the best of what South Florida is all about better than Winterfest.” As the seventh largest spectator event in the country, the parade attracts over one million attendees and is televised nationally to millions of homes. With so much hoopla, it might be hard to figure out where to take it all in. Not to worry. This guide will help you find the best vantage points so you don’t miss any of the action. Although the holiday season has already jump started with the exclusive White Party and Family Fun Day, there are still plenty of special events to enjoy. LMGFL.COM | DECEMBER 2013

ew seafood restaurants are as sexy as Mario Spina’s Sunset Catch. Perched above the Marina at the Sands Harbor in east Pompano Beach, the Sunset Catch’s interior Pescatore Dining room and Lounge is decorated with beautiful blue stained glass, sheer curtains hanging from the ceiling and white wall murals that look like ocean waves and sand. is superb at this time of year! Mario’s Sunset Catch concept is based on his roots from the seaport town of Palermo on Sicily’s Northern coast. A gastronomically rich culture, Palermo is renowned for its fresh fish, locally grown vegetables and herbs, and meats sold daily in the local food markets. Each meal is prepared with a taste of Palermo. Begin with the Burrata, a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. It is velvety with sweet milky flavor, served with sautéed broccoli rabe and garlic. If you love mussels the chef prepares the plump black Mediterranean variety in either a fra diavolo or white wine

garlic sauce. For those who crave spicy, go with the fra diavolo. There are large pieces of tomatoes in the presentation and while zesty it isn’t too fiery. And you’ll be dipping your freshly baked bread into the remaining sauce after you’ve eaten the mussels! If you enjoy ceviche, theirs includes octopus and conch served citrus style with a hint of lemon, cilantro, chopped onions and tomatoes. For entrees, the Branzino (a European Seabass) is butterflied, deboned and served with baby Portobello mushrooms in a port wine reduction. Moist and delectable! I found the most tempting item on the menu to be the golden crab fettuccini. Although this selection is rich, you’ll want to share an order rather than pass it up. The golden crab comes from the deep, cold waters of the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Ocean, and is named for the creamy-

beige color of their shell. The meat is sweet and delicate. If you aren’t in a seafood mood when you visit Mario’s Sunset Catch, the menu includes grilled New Zealand Lamb and New York Strip. The truffle oil French fries are crispy and incredible, so ask for those as a side! Leave room for dessert. The limoncello, imported from Italy, is a lemon Fra diavolo whole lobster liqueur served gelato style in a flute glass. It’s sweet and creamy. The homemade Cannoli was my favorite. The crust was light yet crunchy and the filling soft and rich. One is perfect but you will long for another. And if you happen to catch Winterfest Boat Parade fever, Sunset Catch provides the perfect viewing venue. For $99 per person, you can enjoy the passing flotilla Sudnay, Dec. 8, along with a five-course, family style meal. Call for reservations. Q LMGFL.COM | DECEMBER 2013

Higher education is one of the most important investments you can make for a child or grandchild’s future. In fact, studies suggest that a college degree may translate into significantly higher earning power over time. It’s no secret, though, that college is also expensive. How do you balance the high cost of college with other competing demands, such as saving for retirement or paying down debt? A popular and cost effective potential solution is a state-sponsored college savings plan. Commonly known as a 529 plan, it’s named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that made this type of plan possible. What’s so great about 529 plans? In two words: tax benefits. The money you contribute to a 529 plan can grow free from federal income taxes. That means your investment earnings may compound faster than in a taxable account. What’s more, as long as you use your 529 savings to pay for qualified education expenses, such as tuition, room and board, books, and other necessary equipment and supplies, those withdrawals are also free from federal income tax. Some states even offer residents state income tax benefits on contributions and withdrawals. If you use 529 savings for non-qualified expenses, however, the earnings portion of your withdrawal may be subject to taxes and penalties. Giving You Flexibility With a 529 plan, you can save for higher education costs for just about anyone in your life — your children, grandchildren, other relatives, or even yourself if you decide to go back to school. There are generally no age limits for the account beneficiary and, unlike other tax-deferred investment programs, your ability to contribute is

not phased out at higher income levels. Most important, the money you save in a 529 plan can be used at any eligible college, university or vocational school. What if your child decides to skip college? The money you save in a 529 plan can be transferred to another family member, or even yourself, for higher-education costs although taxes and penalties may apply. Please consult the specific state’s plan document for specifics on transferring a 529 plan. A Winning Combination of Benefits Affording college for a child or grandchild requires careful planning. A 529 plan offers attractive benefits that can make it easier to save. Contact your financial professional to see if a 529 plan is right for your college savings needs.

NOT YOUR MOTHER’S FACELIFT: 3 STEPS TO NATURAL, CUSTOMIZED RESULTS

DECEMBER 2013 | LMGFL.COM

If you look in the mirror and don’t recognize the face looking back at you, or just feel like you look older than your years, you may think it’s time for a facelift—and you may be right. But today’s facelift looks nothing like the one that was available to your mother’s generation. Two decades ago restoring a youthful face meant having a surgical facelift. That was largely the option when it came to anti-aging, and it was extreme, from surgery to recovery and results. Today we have access to new technologies, such as fillers and radio frequency energy that provide a variety of less extreme solutions. Scientific research has also taught us to understand more accurately how the face ages. The old nip and tuck on its own simply can’t deliver a nice, natural result. In fact, for many women, surgery may not be necessary at all. By combining this new knowledge with the non-surgical products available today, plastic surgeons who are in the know are able to effectively evaluate and customize a rejuvenation approach for every patient. The result? You’ll look years younger. Here’s how it works in my practice: Step 1. What You See (in 3D) Research has shown that aging happens on a 3-dimensional plane in terms of skin damage, volume loss and skin laxity. These are the three components I evaluate to determine the best approach to every woman’s face. Does the skin show signs of aging? Has volume loss contributed to drooping skin? Does excess skin require surgery? Step 2. Volume Control Yes, you may need a lift, but it doesn’t necessarily involve a scalpel. This is

where volume comes in. As we age, the face loses fat. When it’s lost from the cheeks, the face flattens out, nasolabial folds form, and prejowls begin to show. When fat is lost from under the eyes, hollows appear and skin sags. Soft tissue fillers or fat are better used to revolumize these areas than pulling them tight in a traditional facelift procedure. Step 3. Better Together No matter how many options and approaches there are today, the best results come from a collaborative approach between physician and patient. In my practice that means listening to patient desires and providing the available options that span the nonsurgical to surgical spectrum. At the end of the day, it’s all about a customized approach to your face. If there’s one thing we know for certain in the aesthetic industry today, one size does not fit all. Dr. Lisa J. Learn is board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in a broad scope of surgical and non-surgical treatments for the face and body. A CASE OF CANDIDA (YEAST SYNDROME)

DR. KENNETH WOLINER Board Certified Family Physician 9325 Glades Road, Suite 104 Boca Raton, FL 33434 561-314-0950 holisticfamilymed.com

“I know it doesn’t really describe what’s happening to me, but I just feel ‘off’.” I listened intently as Susan continued to tell me her story. “I don’t know if it’s a difficult-to-treat condition I have, but it sure has been difficult to get diagnosed. You’re the 5th doctor I’ve seen in the last four months.” “Even though I’m board-certified in family medicine, my practice has morphed into one that handles cases that other physicians have difficulty with. Tell me more about what’s been going on.” “I just noticed that I’m tired all the time. I can’t stay up late. When I come home, I’m spent. I know exercise is supposed to help, but I just can’t keep up with my spinning class anymore.” “Fatigue has lots of causes, sometimes more than one at a time. After hearing your history I’ll use some of this 80+ minute consultation to do a complete physical exam so I don’t miss anything.” “But there’s more. I’m bloated whenever I eat. My tongue has been coated so white, my kids sometimes ask if I brought home any vanilla ice cream. Do you know what causes that?” “Open up; let me see.” Sure enough, Susan’s tongue was heavily coated white. “That’s classic candida! You’ve got yeast.” “You mean like a yeast infection? I get those from time to time, but I don’t feel anything now.” “Yes, a classic candida infection is what you’re thinking about, but I’m speaking of CANDIDA ENTERITIS, a systemic yeast infection in your gut. It can cause lots of symptoms including the fatigue and bloating you mentioned, but also chronic sinusitis, heartburn, diarrhea, anal itching, and ‘brain fog’, where your concentration and memory are impaired.” “That sounds just like me. I can’t tell you how many times I walk into

the kitchen not knowing why, and then I say to myself, ‘Oh yeah, to get my keys! Why didn’t my other doctors diagnose this?” “Unfortunately, many doctors just write off these symptoms as stuff that happens with normal aging. The problem is that medical schools don’t do much teaching about the various problems that occur with yeast.” I motioned her to the exam table, “Let’s finish our physical exam.” “See these white spots on your arms and legs?” Susan nodded. “It’s called IDIOPATHIC GUTTATE HYPOMELANOSIS and it’s caused by yeast that prevents your body from making melanin, or skin pigment.” “But my dermatologist said it’s caused by too much sun!” “Unfortunately, dermatologists sometimes triple book 15 minute appointment slots and don’t have time to give a proper explanation. Because I’m out-of-network I’m not forced by insurance companies to run patients through as fast as possible. I take the time to diagnose things better and find solutions that treat the cause of your condition, not just cover up symptoms.” “So, do I just take a Diflucan pill, the way my GYN has prescribed before?” There’s a lot of drug-resistant bacteria and yeast out there so I need to do a culture and sensitivity test to figure out how to best treat you, and then we’ll have to be aggressive in our treatment.” Susan’s testing did show yeast, and perhaps due to all the Diflucan she’s had in the past, it was resistant to that drug. Luckily, it was killed by another safe medication, and after 3 months of treatment (along with probiotics and a yeast-free diet), Susan returned full of energy. “Dr. Woliner, I convinced my spinning class to do an outdoor ride for charity. Can I sign you up as a sponsor?” LMGFL.COM | DECEMBER 2013
