WELCOME TO THE 2024 SEASON REVIEW
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this second edition of my country footy season review.
Last season this review was published for the very first time and based on the fantastic feedback, I received it means it’s time for edition number 2.
There was exciting news for coutryfootyscores.com this season when the site expanded to include integrated scoring for over 30 more country football leagues from all around Australia. This means there was match reports, scores and ladders available for every country football league around the country each weekend.
This also meant even more news and stats to explore for everyone via our newly updated match centres focussing on each state. This review also includes a section with a summary for each state and a list of each of their Senior football premiers from this season.
While most of the information within can be found on countryfootyscores.com, but several have been created just for this season overview. Please note, there has been a lot of data and information to go through to compile all this. I have tried to ensure the accuracy of it all.
every Premiership
However I am aware there still may end up being some typos, mistakes or miscalculations, so I apologise in advance if this is the case. I am a 1 man production team, so if there are any glaring errors, please let me know so I can rectify them.
Putting this together has been a great way to reflect of the totality of this years season across the state. This season has seen it’s fair share of challenges, controversy, celebations and joy for many. For all the successes and challenges that country footy and netball clubs and communities face and may face into the future, I’d like to acknowledge all those volunteers who work so hard to keep clubs up and going. Thank you for doing what you do.
As the site has celebrated it’s 25th anniversary this year, I would personally like to thank everyone who visits, feedbacks and enjoys what the site is all about - sharing information for those who love and support country footy and netball from wherever you are in the world. I love that this ‘hobby’ of mine brings so much joy to others.
Finally, I hope you enjoy reading the review as much as I did putting it together. As always I have a couple of new ideas to hopefully bring to fruition in the not too distant future to share as well. But more about them next year.
Here’s to a great season in 2025!
Cheers - Glenn
10 TALKING POINTS
BACK FROM THE BRINK
This season saw the validation of 12 months of hard work from club officials, volunteers and communities as 3 clubs returned from 12 months of recess. Corowa Rutherglen FNC in the Ovens & Murray FNL, Rushworth FNC in the Kyabram & District FNL and Yea FNC in the Outer East FNL all returned to the field this year which was a success in itself, Yea FNC was the most successful of the trio winning 50% of their games for an 8-8 Home and Away result while Rushworth FNC celebrated a 5-11 record Corowa Rutherglen FNC had to wait until Round 17 before singing their song for the first time after a 13 point win over the Wodonga Raiders FNC. Broadford FNC who entered recess this season have had the football world intrigued as it looks like they may return to the Bendigo FNL next season .
STARTING BEHIND THE 8 BALL
Every season each club has a target for a number of wins they need to be deemed successful For some it’s as simple as trying get one win to break a long losing streak, while others do the maths to make sure they make the finals Spare a thought however for two clubs who both ended up this season minus 12 premiership points. In the Loddon Valley FNL, Maiden Gully YCW started 12 points in arrears due to not fielding a Thirds team for 3 consecutive years. Whereas in the Sunraysia FNL, Robinvale Euston FNC had 12 points stripped from them due to 2024 player payment indiscretions. Fortunately for the club they managed to scrape into the finals on percentage despite the points penalty
POINTS TO PROVE
Speaking of points, player points have again become a focus of discussion throughout the season, particularly with a view on how they can be used for better equalisation within and across leagues. Next season several leagues such as the Bellarine FNL, Geelong FNL, Geelong & District FNL, North Central FNL, Ovens & Murray FNL, Ovens & King FNL, Tallangatta and District FNL and Sunraysia FNL are all adopting new tiered points system Whilst this looks as a way to provide some more fairness and equity across the regions, Sunraysia FNL Premiers Imperials FNC look to be an early casualty After being winless 2023 season wooden spooners to Premiers this season they will now most likley move from 41 to 36 points next year.
HEADING HOME?
Country clubs are always on the lookout for players when their AFL days are done and I’m sure there are a few who have been or will be on the phone with some big name former country footballers retiring this year Tom Hawkins (Finley FNC), Dyson Heppell (Leongatha FNC) have most likely already had calls from their hometown enquiring about availability for 2025 Former Saint Seb Ross (Horsham FNC) has committed to coach Colac in in the Geelong FNL while Matt Taberner (Myrtleford FNC), Gary Rohan (Cobden FNC) and Caleb Marchbank (Benalla FNC) would be handy inclusions for their former teams. When the AFL trade and draft period is over, if he doesn’t head north to the Gold Coast, I’m sure Dustin Martin (Castlemaine FNC) can expect a call from everyone at the Castlemaine FNC.
BIG STREAKS COME TO AN END
Some massive losing streaks came to an end this season, with none bigger than for Portarlington FNC who held country Victorian footballs longest winless streak with 68, after the Western Rams FNC left the Riddell and District FNL. The streak ended in round 1 and they followed up with another win in round 2. Wahgunyah FNC broke through after 40 straight losses while Rumbalara FNC and Nilma Darnum FNC ended 39 and 38 losing runs respectively Marong FNC experienced defeat for the first time in 43 games while Bonnie Doon FNC and Harcourt FNC had their successful 34 and 33 winning runs come to an abrupt end as well Currently our active leaders are Maryborough FNC with 62 losses in a row and Harrow Balmoral FNC on 37 consecutive wins
FROM SEASON 2024
“Every football season has its fair share of news, issues, controversies and feel good stories Whilst it would be impossible to list them all, here’s 10 talking points (in no particular order or preference) from the 2024 season.”
DID WE MISS OUT ON A RECORD BREAKING SEASON?
The number is 227 and any country footy aficionado knows this is how many goals Deniliquin Rams FNC Trevor Sutton kicked in the 1982 Murray FNL Home and Away season for the Australian record So did an injury this year deny us a countdown to see if we had another contender? With 93 goals after just 9 rounds Bears Lagoon Serpentine FNC’s Josh Mellington could have had the record in his sights until a hamstring injury meant he didn’t take the field again for 2024 after kicking 6 in round 9 before coming off injured With double digit hauls in 6 of his 9 games, including bags of 17, 15 and 13, who knows what the total could have been. Even so, he still finished 10th overall in terms of the most goals kicked for this season.
OUT OF THE ASHES
We all know that a football club is often the heart and the hub of a local community, the meeting point and place for locals to come together. So losing your clubrooms can have a devastating effect which clubs such as Rochester FNC, Shepparton Swans FNC and Corowa Rutherglen FNC’s can attest to after recent floods. This season Fish Creek FNC suffered a similar situation when their clubrooms full of trophies, premiership flags, club honour boards, photos and over 120 years of memorabilia were lost to fire after a break in late last year Despite this setback, the club were able to keep the title as the most successful Victorian country football club by adding this years Mid Gippsland FNL premieship to their tally, which now stands at a record 38
every Premiership
WHO’S ON THE MOVE?
So this could be a whole page on it’s own. Here’s what we know. Narre Warren FNC and Berwick Springs FNC leave the Outer East FNL and will join the metro Southern FNL. Bunyip FNC will return back to the Ellinbank and District FNL from the West Gippsland FNC. Melton South FNC depart the Ballarat FNL to the Riddell and District FNL, while the influx of clubs that were promoted to head to the Picola and District FNL didn’t eventuate with only Dookie United FNC moving from the Kyabram and District FNL Several clubs tried to get moves going including Newborough FNC, Yinnar FNC and Morwell East FNC, while Cohuna FNC tried again to join the Heathcote & District FNL. All were unsuccessful. We still wait to see if Broadford FNC make their return in the Bendigo FNL.
HARD TO SPLIT THE STARS
It’s been an unprecedented year in country football awards where it has obviously been a hard task to seperate all the on-field stars Nine leagues had multiple Best and Fairest winners, with four of these leagues having triple dead heats at the end of their counts It was actually a four way tie for the league's top honour in the Kyabram and District FNL, however Shepparton East FNC’s Tom McCluskey was ineligible due to a suspension during the season. Last year in the Wimmera FNL former Carlton FC’s Tom Williamson (Ararat FNC) suffered this same fate, however he was able to put that disappointment behind him by claiming an outright win for this seasons top honour There were also four leagues with shared netball Best and Fairests as well
AS 1 NEW ENTITY COMES IN ANOTHER CLUB GOES OUT
Like this season where we welcome newly merged clubs in the Southern Mallee Thunder FNC in the Wimmera FNL and the Maryborough Giants FNC in the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL, season 2025 will also see another new merged cub enter the fray. North Central FNL rivals Wycheproof-Narraport FNC and Nullawil FNC’s will join forces to become the Calder United Lions FNC The Lions will stay and compete in the North Central FNL and we look forward to their debut season next year The news is not the same for the Maryborough FNC who have announced they will go into recess for the 2025 season, leaving many questions on the make up now of the Bendigo FNL for next year as they lose another club after Kyenton FNC’s departure at the end of last season.
