Jobs slashed as COVID-19 takes its toll

FINANCIAL FALLOUT: Suns assistant coach Dean Solomon is one of many club and AFL employees who have lost their jobs.

EDITOR’S LETTER

he financial effect of COVID-19’s impact on football is starting to bite as the AFL and its clubs begin taking concrete steps to deal with the huge amount of money that is leaving the game. Buried in the lead of the AFL’s restructure announcement last week was the projections of a $400 million loss and the flow-on effect is starting to hit the clubs. Gold Coast made headlines when respected senior assistant coach Dean Solomon was let go as part of 14 football department employees at the Suns who lost their jobs. Given that Solomon still had two years remaining on his contract, there were widespread reports there were more than financial reasons behind his departure, with claims the popular former Essendon premiership player had fallen out with senior figures at the club. The claims were dismissed by Suns general manager of football, Jon Haines. “It’s misinformed and it’s incorrect,” Haines said. “If it wasn’t for COVID-19 or the reduction in the football soft cap, we wouldn’t be having these discussions.” Fremantle also parted company with high performance manager Jason Weber and assistants Michael

Prior and Anthony Rock and they did not join the team as it relocated back to its hub in Cairns for the rest of the season. Hawthorn head of player development Damian Carroll also confirmed his departure from the club last week after more than 10 years spent in a variety of coaching roles. Large portions of AFL industry staff, especially those not working in football operations, were laid off by clubs during the initial shutdown. Now that the game has a better handle on how its finances might be going forward, decisions are being made about how football might look next year and beyond.

u Here we go for the second

‘footy frenzy’ of 2020, a season that continues to defy the odds. With the country’s biggest football state in lockdown, the show has continued to roll on and now we’re about to start a three-round block which will see 23 games played in 14 days. The hectic schedule means the AFL Record has produced a combined edition for rounds

15 and 16 – as we did back in rounds 10 and 11. The next three rounds will also see the return of AFL football to Far North Queensland with Cazalys Stadium in Cairns hosting three games. Other than three games at Adelaide Oval in rounds 15-17, all matches will be played in Queensland at the

This game has to change almost 180 degrees to survive AFL LEGEND MALCOLM BLIGHT

The AFL has shed 20 per cent of its staff across all departments. Not everyone is leaving the game, however. Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has shelved plans to step down at the end of the season and has indicated – as long as the members agree – that he will serve another three-year term at the helm. After serving as president from 2006 to 2012, he returned to the position at the end of 2016 following some administrative upheaval at the club. “COVID-19 has changed the landscape for us all, including the football industry. The environment has changed in ways none of us could have imagined,” he said.

Gabba, Metricon Stadium and Cazalys Stadium. As senior writer ASHLEY BROWNE has noted in his top 10 ‘winners’ of 2020 (see page eight), the Queensland government has thrown the AFL a lifeline this season. Without its support, there would be no AFL football and the direct benefit to the game in the Sunshine State will be enormous.

It’s a tough sporting market given our game is competing with two rugby codes and soccer, but AFL football is firmly in the spotlight. With the Lions and Suns turning their fortunes around, the planets have further aligned. Let’s hope that transforms into young boys and girls living out their AFL and AFLW dreams. “It was this uncertainty, and the experience I have from joining the board at Hawthorn when we were struggling in 2005, that convinced me to stand again to make sure we get through this period of uncertainty and challenge.” There are unknowns everywhere. At this stage the AFL has no handle on when next season will start. There are reports it might not begin until May, to maximise

the chances of getting crowds to games, especially in Victoria. Clubs have no visibility as to list sizes for 2021, so list management decisions have been cast aside for the time being. AFL Legend Malcolm Blight spoke for many football people on his Sportsday SA radio show recently. “I’m worried about the game. I’m worried about the future of the game. Everyone should be taking notice,” he said. “One of the things I’m going to find interesting is how the AFL Players Association approaches this. If they (crowds) only come back at 20 per cent and the players want 100 per cent, that is bankruptcy.” Blight also suggested the game itself needed to change, perhaps with rule changes to increase the number of goals. “If we don’t kick more goals, there won’t be enough advertising spots to sell,” he said. “This game has got to change almost 180 degrees for the code to survive. “For the first time in my life, having been privileged to be part of it, the game is standing at its most dangerous precipice.”

DIRE WARNING: Malcolm Blight has fears for the future of the game and says it is “standing at its most dangerous precipice”.

risbane’s Brandon Starcevich is the round 13 nominee for the 2020 NAB AFL Rising Star Award following a 10-disposal, four-mark effort against St Kilda at the Gabba. The 21-year-old went at 100 per cent disposal accuracy. After playing just five games in his first two seasons due to injury, the talented defender has played every game in 2020, mixing roles as a lockdown defender on the best small forwards to showing great run and carry off half-back and using his penetrating kick. He is the nephew of 1990 Collingwood premiership player and now Brisbane Lions AFLW coach Craig Starcevich. He grew up in Western Australia and started his junior footy with Mt Lawley-Inglewood in Perth. He joined WAFL club East Perth, playing 20 Colts games across two seasons and averaging more than 13 disposals. He represented WA at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in 2016 and 2017, playing a key role at half-back. ASHLEY BROWNE

ONE WEEK at a TIME

Better than all the rest

The most unusual season in the 125-year history of the League still has a way to go, but there has been enough footy played for ASHLEY BROWNE to identify what he has most liked about 2020. 1. FOOTY IN QUEENSLAND u Let’s face it, without the help

of the Queensland government, there would likely be no AFL season in 2020, which is why this tops the list. The Gabba has come up a treat most weeks despite the heavy traffic, while Metricon Stadium, while looking a little mottled of late, is showing the benefits of the total refurbishment a few years back that several bodies, including the AFL, footed the bill for. Cazalys Stadium in Cairns has now joined the party as well. It has been a banner year for the game in Queensland, what with all these games, the Lions in premiership contention and the Suns on the improve. In a year in which the Brisbane Broncos have been in turmoil, the AFL has rightfully been the talk of the town.

2. GRANDSTAND FINISHES u Robbie Gray’s goal from the

boundary after the final siren to help Port Adelaide beat Carlton in round seven was as ice-cool as you could wish to see. It came after a frantic final few minutes in which the Power had dominated the Blues but could not land the knockout blow. We didn’t think we’d see any better in 2020, but then along came Jack Newnes. There might have been an ounce of luck along the way, but his set shot from the boundary to give Carlton the win over Fremantle in round 12 was an instant classic.

8  AFL RECORD

The crowd was giving him all sorts, he had to deal with an intransigent camera operator, but he calmly slotted the goal from 50m out and the kick will forever be included along with those of Malcolm Blight and Gary Buckenara as among the greatest of all time.

3. THE SAINTS u Footy is better when St Kilda

is up and about. An entire region of Melbourne, from Port Melbourne down to the Mornington Peninsula, has that extra spring in its step when the Saints are winning and eyeing off a place in the finals. They haven’t been there since 2011. And they’re easy on the eye which is good for the game. They run and they gun, a capability beyond several teams in the competition. They have traded superbly and two key figures in their resurgence this year are small forward Dan Butler and midfielder Zak Jones. It has all come together under the coaching of Brett Ratten and few would begrudge him success given some of his personal history and, before that, the terrible way he was treated by his former club, Carlton.

4. THE BLUES u Footy is also better when the

Blues have their strut back. It has been a painfully slow rebuild, but the switch to David Teague has unquestionably been for the best and Carlton is in the finals mix for the first time since 2013. The Blues have emerging talent all over the ground, Patrick Cripps is enjoying a great season and they have an abundance of talented forwards. And Charlie Curnow hasn’t played all year. Chances are they will just miss out on the finals, but they are relevant again. It’s great for TV ratings and will be huge for the cashstrapped bean-counters in Victoria next year when bums on seats are allowed at the footy once more.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE: Queensland has been the saviour of football in 2020, with the Gabba (above) and Metricon Stadium sharing a heavy load; Robbie Gray’s goal after the siren (below) provided the finish of the season ... until Carlton’s Jack Newnes came along (see page 3 for photo).

5. CHARLIE DIXON u One of the more watchable

players in the game when he’s up and about. He is rangy, he is nasty, he is charismatic and he is a wonderful key forward when he is up and running. It hasn’t been a banner year for the big forwards and his form in recent weeks has tapered a touch, but he is in career-best form and he demands the ball. He is the key to Port Adelaide’s premiership hopes. Just get him the ball.

6. FOOTY FRENZY u It was the salvation of the season.

Thirty-three games in 20 days. Now we have 31 games in 19 days. And how about those time slots? Games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Double-header Thursdays with games starting at 4.30pm. The ‘Frenzy’ has been necessary in order to get the season away and concluded before we get too late into the year. It has caused clubs to heavily rotate their lists and the word ‘managed’ has come into play more than ever. But while it has been Nirvana for supporters, it is also likely to be a one-off. In a season when the game is primarily a ‘made-for-TV’ special, it has worked a charm. But when Victoria reopens for supporters, hopefully by the start of next season, expect normal transmission to return.

7. DREAMTIME IN DARWIN u Again, a necessary byproduct

of football in a time of COVID. Instead of 75,000 fans at the MCG, we had a few thousand at TIO Stadium, but the pictures coming through the TV and reports of the event were mesmerising. It raised the legitimate question of whether the Dreamtime Game should be played in the Top End more regularly.

DARWIN THEORY: Dreamtime in the Top End was a hit with fans (above); Swan Tom Papley (above right) became the AFL’s new villain; a star was born when exciting Sun Matt Rowell (below) burst on to the scene.

It is a big occasion at the MCG and a huge money-spinner for the AFL and the clubs, but perhaps the solution is to play it in the NT once every few years. Territorians are mad for the game, but Essendon and Richmond in particular have huge supporter bases in the region. The AFL has a few more pressing issues to deal with in the short term, but it is something it should instigate down the track.

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said later that no player in the competition is better at milking a free kick than Papley and indeed the next week he was fined for staging. But in a season in which the AFL is ever-present, especially on TV, we watch the Swans because we want to see Papley, both for his dynamism and his theatrics. With Lance Franklin out for the season, who else is there to watch?

8. CAM GUTHRIE & SAM MENEGOLA

10. MATT ROWELL

u The path to a Geelong 2020

premiership was supposed to rest on the shoulders of the usual suspects – Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, Gary Ablett, Mitch Duncan and Tom Hawkins. But what has propelled the Cats into being a major chance for the flag is that their so-called middle rung are enjoying fantastic seasons and Guthrie and Menegola are among them. Guthrie works well as an inside and outside midfielder, while Menegola, both through the midfield and closer to goal, has become a weapon for the Cats.

u OK, he hasn’t played since round

five, way back when games were still in Victoria and he is unlikely to play again this season because of that shoulder injury. But the memories of his three best-on-ground performances for Gold Coast between rounds two and four remain vivid and he is already a bona fide star of the competition after just five games.

@hashbrowne

9. TOM PAPLEY u Every sport needs its villain and

in 2020 the Sydney small forward has become just that. Entering round 14 he had kicked 21 goals to be seventh on the table. His personal best was four against the Hawks. It was a fiery afternoon against the old enemy and included two goals in a minute after being pushed to the ground by James Frawley. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  9

eismic change is coming to second-tier football across much of eastern Australia after the AFL announced recently that the Victorian Football League and North East Australian Football League will merge to form a competition which will span three states. After the League reviewed its operations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision has been made to absorb NEAFL teams into the VFL competition, which reportedly blindsided a number of clubs. AFL clubs in Victoria, New South Wales, ACT and Queensland will be given the option to field teams in the reborn VFL, align with one existing team or spread their talent pool across a range of clubs. The AFL confirmed on August 24 that the 2021 season will be a transition year for the new second-tier competition as the sport looks to recover from the impacts of the global pandemic.

Attention will turn to how standalone NEAFL clubs such as Canberra, Aspley Hornets, Redland Bombers, Southport Sharks and Sydney University are able to survive, with the circumstances meaning they could be forced to merge in order to stay afloat. The challenges of the current period were highlighted in July when North Melbourne was forced to pull the plug on its standalone VFL program after just two years. Changes to the talent pathway for boys and girls will also be implemented, with the focus to move from under-16s and under-18s to under-17s and under-19s next year to reflect the disruption caused this season. Despite much discussion about changing the draft age, the AFL has opted to keep it at 18 for the NAB Leagues (male and female). No junior football has been played in Victoria in 2020 due to the second COVID-19 wave, with recruiters forced to look interstate and use footage from previous seasons ahead of the NAB AFL Draft later this year.

Crimmo – tragic tale of a Hawk icon

ASHLEY BROWNE

f you barrack for Hawthorn, chances are strong you know the story of the late, great Peter Crimmins. It is a huge part of the club. New employees – players, coaches and staff – learn about him when they undertake their induction. It’s as much a part of the club as the brown and gold. But the Crimmins story has not been told in any depth outside of u FOOTY FUNNIES – Bob Dikkenberg

Hawthorn, until the publication of Crimmo, an exhaustive and intricate study of his life and his career, written by football writer and historian Dan Eddy. It is a book read with some trepidation because you know how the story ends – his death from cancer at age 28, just days after the Hawks won the 1976 Grand Final. It was the final act of a game and a season that was pretty much played in his honour by Hawthorn after a thrashing from North Melbourne 12 months earlier, a capitulation made worse by coach John Kennedy’s difficult decision to leave Crimmins out of the side. But Eddy has painted a vivid picture of Crimmins, from his childhood living in Shepparton and Hawthorn to his Assumption College days when he was one of the best players to come out

of the school known as the “football factory”. Crimmins was a champion rover through 176 games for the Hawks between 1966 and 1975. And one of the great features of the book is the depth Eddy goes to to explain the role of a rover in League football back in the day. Whereas teams now have between eight and 10 midfielders, in the 1970s, there were centremen, ruck-rovers and rovers and they all had distinct roles and responsibilities. And Crimmins, who was quick, smart and brash, would cover the length and breadth of the ground, work hard with and without the ball and be at the ruckman’s foot at every contest. He was supremely fit and a natural leader. And if you want a clear indication as to how good a player he was, for six years he was the clear-cut first rover at Hawthorn. The second rover? That would be an official Legend of the game, Leigh Matthews. u Crimmo: The Peter Crimmins

u Neil Sachse,

the former South Australian star who was left a quadriplegic after an on-field clash in just his second VFL game, has passed away aged 69. He was a star in North Adelaide’s back-to-back SANFL flags in 1971-72 and played in the team that defeated Carlton in the National Championship game in 1972. Sachse was Footscray’s boom recruit in 1975, but the collision at the Western Oval against Fitzroy was a devastating episode for the game and led to a greater awareness of spinal and head injuries. In 1994, he established the Neil Sachse Foundation, which raised millions of dollars for research into spinal cord injuries. “He remained a pioneer, committed and tenacious in his pursuit for research and understanding of spinal injuries through his foundation for which our game is the benefactor,” SANFL chief executive Jake Parkinson said. He is survived by his wife Janyne and sons Ben and Sam. ASHLEY BROWNE

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Best and worst of social media Highlighting the plight of a former Saint comes on the back of a current star taking a stance.

T

he genie has long been out of the bottle with every facet of our daily lives when it comes to social media, be it Twitter, Facebook, Instagram et al, and football has been no exception. And in recent times, we have seen the best and the worst of social media and the impact it has on our game. Let’s start with the best. On August 23, the ABC published an extraordinary online feature story by sports journalist Russell Jackson which told the harrowing life story of former St Kilda player Robbie Muir. Anyone with a fair appreciation of the game’s history knew of Muir. A talented wingman from Ballarat who played just 68 games between 1974 and 1984 due to a combination of suspensions and a variety of personal issues. But his VFL career was just the tip of the iceberg and Jackson painstakingly told the story of Muir’s life, of the cruelty and poverty he endured as a child, the racism that followed him through his football career and the physical and mental health issues that have been a constant his whole life. But it was football that most defined him and that had let him down. Time after time after time. The story went viral almost immediately, read and shared by writers, broadcasters and other influencers. It dominated social media throughout the day, even as three AFL matches were run and done.

14  AFL RECORD

Such was the impact of the story that St Kilda chief executive Matt Finnis issued a heartfelt apology that day on behalf of the Saints for how Muir was treated by the club during and after his career. The Collingwood and Woodville-West Torrens football clubs and the Ballarat Football League, which were singled out in the story for racist episodes during Muir’s career, issued apologies as well, as did the AFL on behalf of the entire game. Jackson revealed that Muir couldn’t afford the $28,000 needed for surgery for a shoulder injury going back to his playing days because he had already used up his allotment from the AFLPA’s hardship fund for other treatment. A crowd-funding website established that day by Saints fan Mal Padgett raised more than $100,000 in just a few hours. Muir later released a statement through the Saints, saying, “I have been overwhelmed by the reaction to my story, and want to thank everyone who has sent me kind wishes.” That was the good social media, but now for the bad. After Richmond defender Dylan Grimes was paid a free kick for a push in the back against Essendon in round 13, which resulted in an Essendon goal being overturned, the premiership star was subjected to a torrent of social abuse. One of those threats was enough for Grimes to contact Victoria Police out of concerns for his family back in Victoria and days later the

GOING VIRAL: The football industry threw its arms around former Saint Robbie Muir (top); while Richmond defender Dylan Grimes (above) was the subject of a torrent of abuse that has led to police charges.

police announced a 39-year-old Frankston man had been charged with what they said was “stalking, using telecommunications device to menace, making threat to commit sexual offence and other charges.” He was bailed to appear in court in May next year. ‘Keyboard warriors’, or more to the point, ‘keyboard cowards’ have been venting at footballers for as long as there has been social media. But calls for action to be taken against them have fallen on deaf ears until now, and news of the arrest was welcome, especially for the players who have had to endure this vile behaviour for far too long. There are great perks that come with playing football for a living. But the bright lights and the big pay cheques should not mean that online vilification of players goes unchecked. This arrest should send a firm message to those who think it is their right to tee off on players when and how they please. They will be found and they will be caught.

#1 PRESSURE PLAYER

CLAYTON OLIVER TOP 10 PRESSURE PLAYERS OF 2020 u It’s been an up and down season

for Melbourne in a difficult year for all 18 clubs. The Demons have mixed their form at stages, blending some underwhelming displays with sublime performances plus everything in between. But one constant throughout 2020 has been midfielder Clayton Oliver. The two-time ‘Bluey’ Truscott medallist’s ball-winning ability has again been central to his game as he sits in the top range in the competition for possessions. He’s also been regularly providing the Demons with inside 50s and score involvements while leading the club for clearances. The 23-year-old has also been performing to an elite level from a pressure point of view. Champion Data’s numbers tell us that Oliver averages just over 57 pressure points a game, which sees him comfortably sitting inside the top five in the AFL. He ranks at the pointy end in the competition for tackles – a category in which he easily leads his club – combining attack with defence in his pivotal role in the engine room for Simon Goodwin’s side. Oliver finds himself ranked alongside Gold Coast recruit Hugh Greenwood, improving Geelong midfielder Brandan Parfitt, St Kilda’s All-Australian prospect Jack Steele and North Melbourne’s Jed Anderson as the top pressure players in the League in 2020. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75).

Geelong’s Jake Kolodjashnij recently reached the 100-game milestone without kicking a goal. Is that a record for Geelong? DANNY BAKER, GEELONG WEST, VIC

with MARK GENGE

u In recent years,

the word “hopper” slipped into the football lexicon in the term “code-hopper” (for players such as Karmichael Hunt). Hopper is also an old surname, but Greater Western Sydney midfielder Jacob Hopper is only the second of that surname to play AFL/VFL football, behind Ken Hopper (Carlton/Hawthorn 1940s-50s). The name is probably a derivative of the Old English verb hoppian (to hop) and may have been bestowed as a nickname on a dancer or tumbler; or simply on someone with excessive energy. Alternatively, it may have been applied to a grower or seller of hops, the basis of beer.

MG: Geelong’s Gary Malarkey (1977-86) has played the most games for the Cats (172) without kicking a goal. Before joining Geelong, Malarkey played 101 games for East Perth. In 1976, he booted 29 goals in the WAFL, including a bag of six. Collingwood’s Ted Potter holds the AFL/VFL record with 182 games (1963-72) for no goals. Potter played in three Grand Finals (1964, 1966, 1970) without premiership success. Among the players who have played more than 100 games without kicking a goal, several were premiership teammates. Essendon’s Les Gardiner (166) and Roy McConnell (135) played together in the 1949 and 1950 premierships, while Jim Gallagher (151) and Herb Henderson (130) were in Footscray’s 1954 flag-winning side. Geoff and Jack Moriarty were a family of extremes. Geoff played 106 games for Fitzroy (1897, 1899-1907) without kicking a goal, while his son Jack booted 662 goals from his 170 games with Fitzroy and Essendon (1922, 1924-33).

season in AFL Fantasy is making your best midfielder the captain against Adelaide. The Crows average about 1400 points scored against them in 2020. That’s almost 100 more than the next easiest team to score against (Hawthorn) and 280 more than the toughest team, Geelong. During the season we’ve seen some of the biggest scores of the year posted by midfielders playing the Crows. Marcus Bontempelli’s season-high 145 in round 12 and Zach Merrett’s 138 in round eight were both against Adelaide. Hawthorn, GWS, Carlton and Richmond play against the Crows throughout the four rounds of Fantasy finals

and if you’re looking for an edge, consider picking one of the star midfielders from those teams. Dustin Martin could be gold in the round 17 grand final. Hawthorn’s forward line is leaking plenty of points. They give up an average 76 points to their opponents’ best three Fantasy defenders. In the ruck, most big men have a good day against Tim English and the Bulldogs, while taking on Port Adelaide and Collingwood has been tough. When Max Gawn is fit and firing, however, Melbourne is a tough match-up. Look ahead to the fixtures and target players who have a Fantasy-friendly fixture in the run home to help guide you to premiership glory!

The Giants skipper was in ripping form leading into his bye but unfortunately for his coaches hasn’t reached those heights since. Although it has been frustrating, he will reward the faith with a run of nice match-ups.

Plenty of coaches started with the talented defender for his ability to rack up midfield numbers on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, his scores have not reflected that and a tough run home doesn’t make the likelihood of a recovery high

ESSENDON MIDFIELDER

Just short of receiving forward status and his extended minutes up front have had a negative effect on his scoring output. Hold him until your team is ready for luxury upgrade trades and chase a higher ceiling.

The developing Bomber mid has dropped off in recent weeks, taking a back seat to Zach Merrett’s domination. He isn’t hitting the heights he needs to in order to justify a midfield position on your team and he has a tough run home which will make scoring difficult.

The Roo is having a great breakout season but his consistency reaching premium scores has dropped off in recent weeks. Having said that, his ability to hit the 90s is still better than the majority of options.

This year’s ruck scramble has resulted in coaches selecting players that weren’t on their radar. Unfortunately for some, last year’s premium option hasn’t posted the same impressive numbers and the target has to be big Maxy.

This is the first week of Fantasy finals for leagues with a final eight. The schedule follows the AFL finals series, with the top four teams getting a double chance and the winners getting a week off.

For those still in contention in their Fantasy Draft leagues, be sure to hit the free agents in the final rounds. You may find a star coming back from injury or a gem with a nice run of games.

Rounds 15 and 16 feature eight teams on a bye. Round 15 includes the Cats, Suns, Roos, Power, Saints and Bulldogs, while the Magpies and Tigers have the bye in round 16

TEN MILLION MOMENTS and $10 million raised for local clubs Grassroots sporting clubs are more than just places to play. They’re the beating heart of local communities, where moments are shared and friendships are nurtured. Since 2008, Toyota has been supporting local clubs through our unique Good for Footy and Good for Cricket programs, including annual raffles which make club fundraising free and easy. This year, we’ve reached a mighty new milestone. Together with thousands of players, volunteers and community supporters, we’ve raised over ten million dollars for sports clubs around Australia. Now that’s a moment to celebrate!

to you by Club Overviews Brought BRISBANE LIONS u The Lions have had the better of their rivals from

down the M1 in recent times, having won five of the past six encounters. They don’t like losing to the Suns and will be keen to take care of business here, first to keep their push for a top-two finish going and also for intrastate bragging rights now that Queensland has become the temporary capital of the AFL. A glance at the injury list suggests that ruckman Stefan Martin might be back. Brisbane has been pinch-hitting admirably in the ruck, but needs him back.

GOLD COAST SUNS

GOLD COAST SUNS u There is no question that the Suns have made

significant progress this season, although the demands of the unusual season were starting to take their toll on the young group as the season progressed. If they have one shot left to fire this season, they would love it to be this one against their big brother up the road. Two players to watch are Alex Sexton and Brayden Fiorini, who have been in and out of the side and will attract attention come the forthcoming trade period. ASHLEY BROWNE

Highest score: 22.7 (139), round 16, 2016, at Metricon Stadium. Lowest score: 6.10 (46), round 4, 2012, at the Gabba. Away record: 2-7. Home record: 4-5. Greatest winning margin: 64 points, round 5, 2015, at Metricon Stadium. Longest winning sequence: 2, round 5, 2015, to round 19, 2015. Most goals in a game: 6, Charlie Dixon, round 5, 2015, at Metricon Stadium.
