EDITOR’S LETTER

he last time Port Adelaide and Brisbane played a match of this significance was in 2004. It was memorable for all sorts of reasons. It was the Grand Final, the Power prevailed by 40 points, bringing the Lions’ bid for a League record-equalling four straight flags to a crashing halt. Port coach Mark Williams famously pretended to choke himself with his tie, in a gesture to those who had questioned his club’s ability to win big games. And the Power’s Darryl Wakelin and Brisbane’s Alastair Lynch staged the last great Grand Final brawl. Since that day, success for both clubs has been fleeting, but they enter Saturday night’s clash at the Gabba as perhaps the two most in-form teams in the competition. Port has yet to lose a game all season, while Brisbane is unbeaten since the restart, having lost its only game for the season back in March to Hawthorn at the MCG. For all the talk of hubs, the Power have adapted to their Queensland relocation superbly with wins over Fremantle and West Coast, while the Lions have taken full advantage of their fortuitous fixturing, having not left the Gabba since the game’s resumption. The Power entered 2020 full of expectation, most of it internal. u Three rounds into the

And they haven’t disappointed. Ken Hinkley, who needs a finals appearance to keep his job, has had a full list to pick from most weeks and his midfield has been dominant. But what sets Port apart from most is that they have the best big-man combination in the AFL this season, with Charlie Dixon and Todd Marshall both in dominant form. Dixon kicked six goals last weekend and with 11 leads the Coleman Medal. In a year in which small forwards are dominating, he is

rescheduled 2020 season and it seems like the football is starting to do the talking. We have come to accept that games are shorter, there is less scoring and life in a five-star resort in Queensland is not all beer and skittles for some. And if you reckon games are lacking a little spirit, try telling that to the Giants and

Bulldogs who wore more than $7000 in fines for their melee last Friday week and the Suns and Dockers who clocked up $3250 for their half-time skirmish last Saturday night. Port Adelaide has emerged as the clear winner of the four sides based in the northern hub, with Ken Hinkley’s men the form team of the competition.

Success for both clubs has been fleeting If the Power leave the hub after round six undefeated or, at worst, dropping one of their next two games against Brisbane and the GWS Giants, then an overall win-loss record of 6-0 or 5-1 post-hub will set them up nicely. The same can’t be said of Adelaide, Fremantle and West Coast who are winless since heading north. The Crows

and the Dockers are finding their way under new coaching regimes, but the Eagles will have to get their skates on when they return to WA after round six. This week the Record celebrates two Geelong greats Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett as they prepare to play their respective 300th and 350th games. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME the exception. And his return to form is a show of faith for Hinkley, a key supporter of Dixon back to their start-up days with Gold Coast. The Lions made their first finals series for almost a decade last season and have struck the same vein of form in 2020. Chris Fagan’s midfield is humming, with Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage a dangerous one-two punch in the engine room. About the only concern is their conversion and the Lions might have left some valuable percentage on the shelf with their wasteful 10.23 against Adelaide last Sunday. Brisbane won both matches between the clubs last year, although Port won the previous five clashes. The sneakily good game this weekend might be the hastily-rescheduled clash between Carlton and St Kilda on Thursday night. Blues supporters have needed the defibrillator machines handy since the restart with a one-point loss to Melbourne followed by a two-point win over Geelong and a one-point decision over Essendon.

welcome – and needed – after successive ACL injuries. With their run-and-gun game, the Saints have been terrific to watch and, to their credit, they didn’t deviate from their game-plan last Saturday in beating Richmond after being touched up by Collingwood the week before. The final game of the round features the GWS Giants hosting Hawthorn at Giants Stadium. Same teams, but different location for one of the most bizarre games of last season, or any season, the ‘snow game’ in Canberra. The Giants (2-2) held on in a tight game against Collingwood last week to get their season back on track, while the Hawks are making a good fist of their difficult draw with a 3-1 start. They won both their games against the Giants last season.

majestic final quarter in just his second game for the GWS Giants has helped earn Tom Green the week four nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award. The Giants held on to win by two points, and the powerfully-built midfielder was enormous, with six disposals and three clearances in the final quarter. “For a young guy playing his second game in and amongst some of the best midfielders in the competition, I just thought he made some really good decisions,” Giants coach Leon Cameron said. The Canberra-born and raised Green was the 10th selection at last year’s NAB AFL Draft and the Giants Academy player found his way to the club after GWS matched Carlton’s bid at No. 10. There is already great anticipation about his first head-to-head clash this season with Gold Coast’s Matt Rowell, the week two Rising Star nominee. Green’s grandfather Michael was a four-time Richmond premiership ruckman.

MEN Double delight at the Cattery

It’s a special day at GMHBA Stadium this Saturday as two of Geelong’s finest – Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett – celebrate their respective 300 and 350-game milestones.

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett with the 2009 premiership cup.

ASHLEY BROWNE

own at Kardinia Park they like to tell some stories about Joel Selwood and the recurring one is this. It is five weeks into the 2007 season. Geelong coach Mark Thompson had narrowly kept his job after a searching review at the end of the previous season, yet after a wobbly 2-3 start to the season, the self-doubt was lingering over the Cats once more. What followed was a week of soul-searching and lots of hard questions, and the end result was the 157-point flogging of Richmond that started the march towards the drought-breaking premiership at the end of that season. And the player who led the way through much of that difficult week? That would be Selwood, who had just turned 19 and was five games into his career. Cats assistant coach Nigel Lappin was still a Brisbane player at the time, but has heard the story so many times in his decade spent working for Geelong that he might as well have been there. “When he walked into the football club he lifted the standards at a time when they were already pretty high,” Lappin told the AFL Record. “For a first-year player to train the way he did and not to be afraid to pull senior players up was remarkable.” His 300th game for the Cats comes against Gold Coast on Saturday, but given the concept of team that Selwood has embraced from the day he first walked into the club, it seems only fitting

8  AFL RECORD

He just hates getting beaten CATS ASSISTANT COACH NIGEL LAPPIN ON SELWOOD

that he shares the limelight with another Geelong identity and perhaps the only more decorated player in the blue and white hoops – Gary Ablett jnr – who plays his 350th AFL game. The Cats’ transformation from serial underachievers to competition powerhouse and perennial premiership aspirant is due to the efforts of many, but Ablett and Selwood sit at the top of the totem pole. Selwood gave Geelong its edge. “It’s his competitiveness and resilience,” Lappin said. “Joel is a real influencer in games and puts himself in situations where others fear to go and he clearly relishes it.” Ablett is also super competitive. Lappin played against him, coached him at the Cats, against him again when he was lured to Gold Coast as that club’s start-up

skipper, then since 2018 has been on his side again once Ablett returned to GMHBA Stadium. “He’s a really proud competitor and he just hates getting beaten,” Lappin said. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a practice match, round one or a Grand Final, he will never lower his colours. “He is an extremely competitive and proud individual.” Selwood invariably walks off the ground looking like he has gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson. Ablett can influence games equally, but might look like he has barely raised a sweat. “He’s skilful and an amazing finisher, but it is his decision-making that is the equal of anyone in the game,” Lappin said. “It’s the right decision at the right time and his cognitive ability is amazing.”

It has been said every week of 2020, but bears repeating again. COVID-19 keeping fans from games has put such a dampener on the season and especially days like Saturday when Selwood and Ablett so deserve to be feted by a full house of the Geelong faithful at GMHBA Stadium. Television pictures will have to suffice, but if Selwood walks off bloody and battered, Ablett dazzles with his magic and the Cats take the points, then this special milestone match will have delivered all that it should.

Status quo for AFLW

T

NIC NEGREPONTIS

he AFL has confirmed its commitment to the AFLW competition for the 2021 season and beyond, despite the COVID-19 crisis impacting the game financially. There had previously been concerns that the competition would be slashed financially in line with the men’s game, where the soft cap will fall by nearly $3 million. However, AFLW player payments and the football department soft cap will be maintained as previously agreed upon in a big win for the game. This means we will see an unchanged nine-round fixture plus three weeks of finals in 2021. Teams will be able to head into free agency in August and the draft, likely in November, without needing to worry about player payments or staffing. Only one AFLW side has made a drastic change to this point, with North Melbourne parting ways with coach Scott Gowans for financial reasons. The 2020 season was cancelled heading into the preliminary finals due to the emerging COVID-19 situation around the country.

LEGEND: John Kennedy was described as the ‘godfather’ of Hawthorn by Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson.

Kennedy the Hawks’ greatest figure

J

ASHLEY BROWNE

ohn Kennedy snr was never one for the aesthetics of football, so he might have been one of the few not to have been displeased with last Sunday evening’s dour struggle at Marvel Stadium. His beloved Hawthorn won the game. North Melbourne, his ‘second’ team, came storming home and almost pinched it. It was a game in which tackles, pressure acts and ‘one-percenters’, a term that post-dated his career but which was first coined by his great pupil, David Parkin, counted for everything. Kennedy, who passed away last week, aged 91, would have loved the contest. It was a serendipitous week. His death came the morning of his grandson Josh Kennedy’s 250th game and the week of the clash between his two clubs. It was only a month ago that he was feted as the 29th Legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame. He was Hawthorn’s greatest figure. He joined the club as an ungainly, awkward ruckman in 1950 and won the best and fairest in his first season. But it was also a winless season and it shaped his outlook on the game for the rest of his life. He would come to hate losing.

Kennedy went on to win three more best and fairests and retired in 1959 after 164 games. He was captain of the Hawks in his last five seasons, including 1957 when the club made the finals for the first time – 32 years after its admission to the VFL. He then took over as coach and, in 1961, they won their first premiership, beating Footscray by 43 points. His Hawthorn team was a curious mix of private schoolboys and tough men from the bush. They thrived under a demanding fitness regimen, his mantra that “injuries above the neck don’t count” and were inspired by his oratory, which Parkin once described as a combination of “Marx, the beauty of Shakespeare and the passion of Churchill”. He coached Hawthorn until 1963 and then from 1967 to 1976. He again lifted the Hawks up the ladder and they beat St Kilda by seven points in the 1971 Grand Final, arguably the most brutal flag-decider ever. And they won their third flag in 1976, in a Grand Final tinged with sadness with club captain

Peter Crimmins on his deathbed. He died just three days later. Twelve months earlier, Kennedy had left him out of the losing Grand Final against North Melbourne, for fear he might not get through the match, having just recovered from his first bout of cancer. It was during this Grand Final that Kennedy was recorded for posterity and his famous exhortation became part of football lore: “Don’t think, don’t hope, do!” It was a major surprise when Kennedy came out of retirement to coach North Melbourne in 1985 for five years and he retained a fondness for the Kangaroos. But there was no disputing that the Hawks were his true love and he famously still barracked for them in a pair of Grand Finals in 2012 and 2014 when grandson Josh was playing for the Swans. Kennedy, who also served as chairman of the AFL Commission from 1993-97, was described by Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson as the “godfather” of the club. He is survived by children Maureen, John (a four-time Hawks premiership player), Bernard and Patrick and their families.

he state of the game debate has ramped up again, this time on the back of multiple low-scoring scraps in round four. After Carlton and Essendon scored just 103 points between them on a bitterly cold MCG night last Saturday, two more dour affairs followed on Sunday. As is usually the case when it comes to holistic football issues such as these, Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson’s voice was front and centre when it came to the age-old question – how do we increase scoring in the game? He delivered a brutal take on the state of footy after his side’s narrow win against North Melbourne last Sunday night, labelling the contest a “terrible spectacle”. “I thought it was a terrible spectacle. I am sorry for canning our own brand and our own club and our own team in this space,” Clarkson said. “We had 69 tackles (and) I don’t think we had a free kick from a tackle. Sixty-nine tackles and not one of them can be adjudicated as holding the ball? “It’s like, what’s happened to our game? You can’t have that many tackles and not one of them be incorrect disposal. “The powers that be don’t think that right at the minute.

Hopefully it will change because they’re wondering why goals can’t be scored.” On the same day, Geelong played out another low-scoring scrap at the MCG and Cats coach Chris Scott didn’t mince his words either after the match. Rather than offering up a solution to change umpiring interpretation when it comes to holding the ball, Scott suggested cutting down the number of players on the field.

“Coaches are in a really good position to give feedback around what the tactical response might be,” Scott said. “I’m not pushing this agenda, I want to be really clear. In a way, I’d rather invest less time in making the game better so I can just do my job and have other people be empowered to do the things they need to do. “So if we want to make the game less congested, last week we played Carlton in some match practice, 16 v 16 at Geelong, and it was exhilarating. “Fourteen v 14 at Port Melbourne (against Melbourne), and once one team got the ball and moved it fast you couldn’t stop them. “But I hear the traditionalists saying, ‘stop mucking around with the game, it’s never going back to what it was.’”

ack in the early 1980s when ESPN was nothing more than a small Connecticut-based sports cable TV station, it grabbed whatever sports content it could. The cheaper, the better. It couldn’t afford to the broadcast rights to the NFL, Major League Baseball or the NBA. So when a TV rights broker offered them this manic, violent football game from the other side of the world, ESPN happily handed over a few bucks. And it quickly attracted an audience. In the brilliant oral history of ESPN – Those Guys Have All The Fun – former network president George Bodenheimer said, “Australian Rules football was one of our bedrocks and we put up a graphic on the screen that said … ‘We don’t know the rules either. If you would like to know the rules, send us a postcard.’ And we got 50,000 postcards.” For many of us of a certain age, no backpacking trip around Europe in the mid-1980s was complete without at least one late night, beverage-fuelled ‘footy v gridiron’ debate with a bunch of Americans. “Your game is crazy,” they would say, before the inevitable jibes about the tight shorts and some drunken goal umpire imitations. Indeed, in the various stories of ESPN’s early days that variously get told, those who worked there say the first time they knew the station was starting to attract decent audience numbers was when legendary US night-time TV host Johnny Carson

14  AFL RECORD

made a joke about the Australian game on ESPN on one of his shows. Said veteran ESPN broadcaster Bob Ley, “Oh man, it’s a crossover moment. Carson’s watching, which is nice, but it also takes you to a whole new realm.” Fast forward to 2020 and the footy is back on ESPN with the recent announcement that what is now the worldwide broadcasting behemoth is showing two live games each week in the United States. The AFL has had a deal with Fox Sports for several years to show live games into the US, but the arrangement with ESPN adds a much larger audience, not to mention added prestige for our game. The renewed interest in footy in the US started over just one weekend. American sport went into its coronavirus-induced shutdown in the middle of March, leaving desperate sports fans to scour the globe looking for whatever live sport they could find. One of them was Pat McAfee, a former NFL punter who hosts a daily podcast that also streams on YouTube. The charismatic McAfee caught a game, raved about the kicking skills and described it as perhaps the greatest he had ever seen. And even though footy soon followed the rest of the world and went into hiatus, McAfee continued to talk up the game and had Mason Cox as a guest on his show. Not surprisingly, McAfee is now a

Collingwood tragic, with a black and white Sherrin taking pride of place on his set. So the wheel has turned the full circle. With no native sport to televise, ESPN turned to a long-lost friend to fill the hours and the AFL was only too happy to help. Two games a week are televised live on ESPN 2. Before long, the big-time American sports will return and, yes, while the Giants of New York will always be more relevant to ESPN viewers than those from Greater Western Sydney, footy is back with the big boys on US television. It won’t just be a promotional boon for the many hundreds who play the game in the strong USAFL competition, but will also help lay the ground work for the grand prize of one day playing a game for premiership points on American soil. The dream of a raging First Take debate between Stephen A. Smith and Kane Cornes on the state of the Crows draws ever closer!

#1 PRESSURE PLAYER

TOM MITCHELL HAWTHORN v NORTH MELBOURNE

Marvel Stadium, June 28, 2020 u In a high-pressure game between

Hawthorn and North Melbourne which included a massive 116 tackles, there was one Hawk who was on top of his game both offensively and from a defensive perspective. Tom Mitchell was one of his side’s best in the narrow four-point victory which saw the Hawks given a scare as the Roos came hard at them late in proceedings. But thankfully for the brown and gold faithful, Mitchell stood up in the contest, producing high pressure numbers, according to Champion Data. He amassed 66.9 pressure points, which came from 28 pressure acts and eight tackles. To go with that, the 2018 Brownlow medallist had 22 possessions, eight clearances and five score involvements as the Hawks moved to fourth spot on the ladder. Mitchell’s former Sydney Swans teammate Josh Kennedy was also immense on the pressure front in round four. In his 250th game, the bustling midfielder produced 70.8 pressure points – a competition-high across the round – courtesy of 30 pressure acts and eight tackles. Unfortunately, the Swans could not get it done against the Bulldogs in Kennedy’s milestone match. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75).

ANSWER MAN GUEST

with GRAHAM PILKINGTON

u Melbourne forward

James Harmes is only the second of that surname to play football at the highest level, the first being the inaugural Norm Smith Medal winner, Carlton’s Wayne Harmes. There are three versions regarding the origin of this surname. One has it as a variation of Herman, an old Germanic name derived from hari meaning “army” plus man, so “army-man”. Alastair Clarkson would welcome him as another “soldier”. Another has the second part deriving from mar meaning “famous” – presumably, someone well known for his fighting skills. Lastly, some claim it comes from the French ami meaning “friend”. James probably prefers the second possibility.

OUT OF HARMES’ WAY

KEVAN CARROLL

My favourite player Joel Selwood is poised to play 300 games to go alongside his three premierships. Of those who have played 300 games, who has played in the most and least premierships? GP: Hawthorn’s Michael Tuck played in a record seven premiership teams in his 426 games, followed by Richmond’s Kevin Bartlett with five flags from 403 games. Essendon’s Dustin Fletcher (400 games) was successful in his first season, and Tuck in his last. Shaun Burgoyne has four flags from 380 games for Port Adelaide and Hawthorn. Gary Ablett jnr is aiming for a third premiership this season and is on 349 games for Geelong and Gold Coast. Of the 90 players in the 300 club, 29 did not play in a premiership team. The most notable is St Kilda’s Robert Harvey, who played 383 games. It also includes VFL greats and Brownlow medallists Bernie Quinlan (Footscray/Fitzroy), Kevin Murray (Fitzroy) and Gary Dempsey (Footscray/North Melbourne). Ten players have exactly 300 games to their name. Richmond’s Francis Bourke played in five premiership teams, while Geelong’s ‘Sam’ Newman played in none. Collingwood’s Len Thompson (301 games) made four Grand Final appearances for Collingwood for three losses and a draw.

WE BOUNCE BACK At Toyota, we’ve been supporting footy for nearly thirty years, but we’ve never seen a comeback like this. Footy is back. We, the footy community, are back, in a demonstration of resilience, passion, unity and pride in this uniquely Australian game. The only game in the world that starts with a bounce. Let’s support one another and share the excitement, because together we bounce back.

SURPRISE PACKET: Dan Butler has been a welcome addition to the Saints.

BUY JY SIMPKIN

NORTH MELBOURNE

FWD/MID,$629,000 With Ben Cunnington sidelined again, Simpkin embraced the opportunity. He had a massive last quarter to give the Roos a shot at winning on his way to 91. He remains one of the under-priced bargains of the competition.

FOCUS ON

MID-PRICED MARVELS

u Picking mid-priced players

has often been frowned upon by many Fantasy coaches over the years. Not necessarily in a negative way, but it is usually a risky proposition and the time-tested Guns ‘n’ Rookies strategy yields the best results. This is the year of the mid-priced player. While there has been value across the board, players available as forwards is where coaches could have gained the upper hand when selecting their initial squads. Christian Petracca put his hand up in the pre-season and is ranked as the No. 1 forward. The Demon’s ownership has increased each week and he now appears in more than a third of teams. Second-year Bulldog Bailey Smith has been a popular trade target as his

stocks continue to rise with $100K earned this season. He is owned by 22 per cent of Fantasy Classic coaches. Similarly, Jy Simpkin has won a lot more fans in the past fortnight with his ownership increasing from three per cent to more than 16 per cent in a week. The surprise packet of the year has been Dan Butler. The Tiger-turned-Saint scored 80 points last round against his old club. He goes into this weekend with a breakeven of -5 and will continue to add to the $139K earned in the first four rounds. Of the 20 players available as forwards with a starting price of more than $600,000, only Michael Walters has maintained or improved his output (adjusted based on shorter quarters). It truly is the year of the mid-priced forward.

BRANDAN PARFITT

GEELONG

FWD/MID, $604,000 After a surprise late withdrawal the week before, the breakout Cat returned to the side and maintained the tackling pressure from round two. In his past two appearances, he has laid 10 and nine tackles for 94 and 88 points.

GWS GIANTS MID, $712,000

FREMANTLE MID, $755,000

The Giants skipper had an absolute shocker by his standards, collecting just 11 possessions for 35 points. He is worth a hold given the extra time he spent forward and the possibility of gaining forward status.

Unfortunately for the Dockers, but more importantly his Fantasy coaches, the superstar will miss multiple weeks with a hamstring. Fortunately, he scored 76 before succumbing to the injury. He will have a BE of 88.

JAKE LLOYD

JEREMY HOWE

SYDNEY DEF, $760,000

COLLINGWOOD DEF, $638,000

The defensive ball magnet looked like he was set for a huge game after an impressive start before slowing in the second half, finishing with just 65. He is better than that and will bounce back.

The Pies’ intercept marking machine has been one of the best defender selections of the year, averaging 86 and rising $123K. Unfortunately, he has suffered a serious knee injury which will likely keep him out for the remainder of the year.

JACK VINEY

MELBOURNE MID, $718,000 Although Viney looks a far cry from the dominant force we saw in round one, he is still worth holding while his price rises. He has a breakeven of just 47 and has a couple more weeks to increase in price, before upgrading.

ALSO CONSIDER

DAYNE ZORKO

BRISBANE LIONS MID, $687,000

The Lions skipper is having a horrible run of injuries since the restart of the season and his price is plummeting as a result. He has dropped $88K and has a BE of 97 following his injury-affected 31.

ROUND 4 – 1626 PTS

Next week, Champion Data will be awarding dual-position status to players playing a different role than their single Fantasy position. Jack Bowes and James Harmes may gain DEF to be handy Draft options.

Suns star Matt Rowell has added $253K to his starting value in four rounds. He is now valued at $523K and with a BE of -28, the young gun’s price is projected to be more than $700K in three rounds time!

How about the form of Lion Lachie Neale? Four games, four Fantasy tons – 108, 109, 126 and 123 last weekend. That score could have been 153 if he had kicked goals instead of six behinds.

HOME, SWEET HOME: The Dockers and Eagles are looking forward to returning to the west.

G

ASHLEY BROWNE

illon McLachlan warned us that 2020 would require everyone in the game to be “nimble and agile”. And this week he meant it. The spike in Victorian COVID-19 numbers and the Queensland Government’s implementation of a 14-day quarantine period for all sports teams who play against a Melbourne team in Queensland, play in Melbourne or play another team that has recently been in Melbourne, caused a major reshuffle of this week’s fixture. The Blues and the Saints were moved from Saturday to Thursday night and from the MCG to Marvel Stadium, because Richmond was forbidden to travel to Queensland to play West Coast this week without having quarantined. The Tigers now play Melbourne on Sunday, while the Eagles will ‘host’ Sydney at Metricon Stadium. The Swans were supposed to meet the Demons at the SCG.

30

AFL RECORD

The new requirements are also likely to mean an extended stay in Victoria for Gold Coast. The Suns play Geelong at GMHBA Stadium and then Hawthorn at the MCG, but the round seven clash with Carlton to follow, originally slated for Metricon Stadium, might now be played in Victoria. At the time of writing, the date and location of the round six Collingwood-Brisbane MCG game also remains uncertain. The League had previously announced the formation of the West Australian hub, with the Dockers and Eagles returning home

Richmond was forbidden to travel to Queensland

for a round seven derby clash in front of a full-house house (it will be Fremantle’s home game) at Optus Stadium. They will be joined there by Geelong and Collingwood, who will meet the same weekend before remaining in Perth for another fortnight to play both the Eagles and Dockers. The Crows and Power will soon be back home playing games in front of large crowds at Adelaide Oval, while the next iteration of the fixture might include games in Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
