month in the warmer climes of Queensland and New South Wales with a bunch of your best mates, on the surface, is the sort of arrangement any weather-beaten, home-bound Victorian would willingly sign up for in the depths of winter. Additional luggage such as golf clubs, surfboards, musical instruments and other recreational devices won’t just be tolerated, but encouraged. Yes, we’re being a bit flippant. Hub life, which the South Australian and West Australian clubs have been dealing with for a month and is coming to an end, is the new normal for the 10 Victorian clubs who, as of Monday night, were all safely ensconced in their temporary northern homes. St Kilda is based on the Sunshine Coast, while Carlton, Richmond, Essendon, the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne have been relocated to various locations around the Gold Coast. Hawthorn and Melbourne are in Sydney for the next fortnight before a further relocation depending on the fixture, while Geelong and Collingwood are also there this week, ahead of a trip to Perth on the weekend where they will both play their next three matches.

The mass evacuation was caused by the spike in COVID-19 infections in Melbourne and the need for games to be moved from the Victorian capital for the next five rounds in order for the AFL competition to continue. This weekend will be historic with all nine games being played in either New South Wales or Queensland. Hub life will present its challenges as Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle will attest.

that here at the AFL Record we were dreaming of a nice cover story about the emerging stars of St Kilda taking on the old pros from Geelong this Thursday night. Shades of those battles from 10-15 years ago when the Saints and the Cats were two of the best sides in the competition with the

epic Grand Final in 2009 won in dramatic circumstances by Geelong. Well, you can forget that idea for the time being. A team from Geelong is meeting a team from Brisbane on Thursday and, wait for it, they are playing in Sydney! And the Saints? Well, they are sunning themselves on

the Sunshine Coast preparing to play Fremantle on Saturday afternoon at Metricon Stadium. Welcome to 2020, a season like no other. Like all Victorian teams, the Saints and the Cats have cleared out to hubs in Queensland, New South Wales and, after this round, Western Australia and South Australia.

But we figured the Saints were still worthy of a cover story this week, given they were the busiest of all clubs during last year’s trade period and their recent form has been impressive. As senior writer Ashley Browne reports (see page eight), the club’s return to its spiritual base at Moorabbin has played a key part in its revival. AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 5

ONE WEEK at a TIME For the first two weeks, the clubs based in Queensland will face the full lockdown, unable to leave their resorts except for training and games. The Hawks and Demons will have it a bit easier in their respective Coogee Beach and Manly locations, and will be permitted to hit the beach and play some golf. Clubs have also taken different approaches to their next 30 days. The Tigers have taken only those likely to be considered for selection to the Gold Coast, determining that their developing players are better off remaining in Melbourne for a month of intensive training. They’re already short-sticked, with premiership stars Bachar Houli and Shane Edwards staying home to be with their partners with babies on the way. Melbourne has also only taken 32 players into the hub. The other clubs took their entire playing squads with them, with Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson indicating that the unique nature of the hubs might mean that reinforcements are needed. They face a five-day turnaround ahead of their clash with Collingwood at Giants Stadium

on Friday night and will be making at least two forced changes at selection. “We know coming up here we’ve brought our whole squad; we’re going to need to use the whole squad,” he said. “And that’s a good thing for our younger players with opportunities.” The fixture for round seven and the following three weeks will see the return of football – with crowds – to WA and SA. And once their five weeks on the road is complete, the 10 Victorian clubs will return home for a short break, which will likely lead to a full bye weekend or a split round. The resumption of games in Victoria will depend on infection numbers, but it won’t be until mid to late next month before the game returns to its heartland.

urtis Taylor had just 12 touches and didn’t register a score in two outings for North Melbourne last season, but has stepped things up considerably in 2020. Last Saturday against the Western Bulldogs, he kicked two goals and had 13 disposals and was a bright spark on an otherwise dreary evening for the Kangaroos. It earned him the week five nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award. Behind the goals vision of Taylor illustrates what a superb set shot he is and the Kangaroos would be delighted with the progress he has made since being selected with the 46th pick at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft. Taylor, the nephew of Australian cricket legend Shane Warne, relocated to his family’s holiday home at Echuca during the recent shutdown period. “I wanted to use the eight-week period to get a jump on the competition, for myself, and as a team,” he told nmfc.com.au.

Heaven forbid, Saints now a haven for the stars St Kilda has embraced a sea change after returning to its old base at Moorabbin. ASHLEY BROWNE.

here is something enticing about St Kilda. Some pretty good footy people – on and off the field – have made their way to Moorabbin, sold by the dream of bringing St Kilda just its second premiership. “There’s no doubt there’s a certain allure about the Saints,” said Simon Lethlean, head of football for the past two years, now the chief operating officer and the primary architect of a group that at the very least is eyeing off the club’s first finals appearance since 2011. “There’s certainly a hunger to win its second premiership, achieving something the club has done only once, that would be special. I feel that and I hope some of the staff feel that as well.” It is an impressive staff list. Take a stroll down the corridor of the club headquarters and you’ll find many highly-regarded footy people have chosen, as the theme song says, “to be with St Kilda”. It starts with Lethlean, a former head of game development, and then football, at the AFL. David Rath, the key strategist for Alastair Clarkson for each of his four Hawthorn premierships, is the head of football, having been headhunted from the AFL where he was a senior advisor to footy boss Steve Hocking. List manager James Gallagher, a former Adelaide player, comes from a strong commercial background. Consultant Graeme ‘Gubby’ Allan brings wisdom and knowledge from more than 30 years in the

caper and a key role in flags at Collingwood and Brisbane. The fulsome praise comes particularly for coach Brett Ratten and football operations assistant Jarryd Roughead. Players rave about Ratten’s level of care and his high emotional intelligence. “It starts with the people he works with having a smile on his face and wanting to be around him and it continues on with his relationship with the players,” Lethlean said. “They believe in him and want to play for him.” Ratten is proof positive of the wisdom of giving sacked coaches a second chance.

Michael Voss and Matthew Knights are surely barracking for him to do well. Roughead might be set for an off-field career to match his on-field deeds that included four premierships for Hawthorn and a Coleman Medal. Whether it is mentoring emerging key forward Max King, his calm demeanour as a bench coach on match-days or, as skipper Jarryn Geary says, “a shoulder for me to lean on and someone I can bounce some ideas off”, he has already come to be regarded as a key piece of the puzzle at St Kilda. “When Jarryd Roughead walks into the club, everyone stands a bit taller,” Lethlean said.

“Unfortunately, there’s not many four-time premiership players of his stature around the St Kilda family, so he’s really important.” But the Saints aren’t 3-2 and coming quickly just because of some high-profile polo-shirt wearers, but rather a quick and hungry playing list that is showing signs of being the best at the club since the Grand Final teams of 2009 and 2010. St Kilda was thought to have won the trade period last October when Bradley Hill, Zak Jones, Dougal Howard, Dan Butler and Paddy Ryder made their way to the club. All but Ryder have established themselves as regular members of the side, but perhaps he is a victim of the shorter season, shorter games and the growing reluctance of clubs to carry two recognised ruckmen into games. And St Kilda’s No. 1 ruckman Rowan Marshall is an emerging star. What Jones, Hill and Butler have is pace – loads of it. And if you think St Kilda targeted them because their leg speed was suited to Marvel Stadium, you would be right, to a degree. “You have to win everywhere, but it certainly helps if you can win at your home ground,” Lethlean said. Hill is the poster boy of the new breed of Saints. He is on big money, but has embraced the opportunity

to be a figurehead, an opportunity never afforded him at his previous stops at Hawthorn and Fremantle. He was quiet last week against the Blues, but was outstanding before then, offering the speed and endurance St Kilda has been lacking for years. “We don’t care that he’s on big money, he wanted an opportunity to lead and we have given him that,” Geary said. “We were so pleased to bring him straight into the leadership group.” The Saints have emerging talent everywhere. Their back half has been impressive and youngsters Ben Long, Callum Wilkie, Nick Coffield, Ben Paton and Howard – with Jake Carlisle the only veteran of note – are keeping the likes of Nathan Brown, Shane Savage and Dylan Roberton out of the side. Jack Steele has become one of the premier shutdown midfielders in the competition (“Just wait until we unleash him,” said Geary) and King has star key forward written all over him. But the main reason the Saints are coming is that they might be the most content group in the AFL. They’re back at Moorabbin (OK, not for the next month or so) and they’ve loved being back at their spiritual home. “There’s a spirit at Moorabbin,” said Geary, the only player

remaining at the club from the old Moorabbin days, which ended with the ill-conceived, ill-fated move to Seaford in 2011 and a key reason why the club is dealing with a debt that runs into eight figures. “I’d hang around the place all day. I never want to leave,” he said. “But at Seaford, I’d train and go straight home again.” In their time at Seaford, the Saints were anything but a destination club and never in the hunt during free agency because the big names had no interest in going there. “I know that for a fact,” former skipper Nick Riewoldt said. Seaford had its place for a club that sees itself as belonging to all of Melbourne’s bayside region, but Moorabbin is where St Kilda needed to be, situated only a short drive from some of the most desirable postcodes south of the Yarra. “There’s no doubt that a $40 million facility in suburban bayside Melbourne is a better sell to recruits and staff,” Lethlean said. “The players don’t want for anything here and to sit in the boardroom with a player manager, it’s an impressive environment and it absolutely helps. It’s all part of the puzzle.” A puzzle that in these most complicated of times, is coming together more quickly than anticipated. AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 9

the battle against Melbourne last Sunday, but it may have lost the war which is the truncated 2020 season. The Tigers left the MCG battered and bruised, facing the prospect of being without Dion Prestia, Toby Nankervis, Trent Cotchin and Tom Lynch for a significant period. Coach Damien Hardwick remains hopeful his side has enough depth to cover in the coming weeks. “Tom (Lynch) has a broken finger and we’ll see how that goes. He played out the game so we hope it’ll be OK even though it’s come at a hefty price,” Hardwick said after his side’s 27-point win. “Those boys will be back, we’ll get an opportunity to see other players fill some roles which excites us. We’ve been down this path before.” The Tigers are settling into Gold Coast hub life without Shane Edwards and Bachar Houli, who have opted to stay in Melbourne due to personal reasons. Richmond’s clash against the Swans at the Gabba on Sunday will see a vastly different Tigers outfit. LAURENCE ROSEN

Testing times as Lions go on the prowl ASHLEY BROWNE

he best game of the round this weekend might be the first when Geelong and the Brisbane Lions meet in the unusual surrounds of the SCG on Thursday night. The Lions are unbeaten since the game’s resumption and turned in their most impressive performance of the season last Saturday night when they trounced previously unbeaten Port Adelaide by 47 points at the Gabba. Their second term, in which they kicked 6.5 to 1.1, was especially dominant and featured some of the best football played by any team this year. It was highlighted by dominant displays by star midfielders Lachie Neale (29 disposals), Jarryd Lyons (27), Hugh McCluggage and Jarrod Berry (both 19).

But they now hit the road for the first time in a month and their premiership credentials will be tested by consecutive games in Sydney against the Cats and the GWS Giants. “We’ve been in Brisbane for a long time now, so a change of scenery might be a good thing for us,” said coach Chris Fagan, who has asked fellow Tasmanian, Australian Test cricket captain Tim Paine, for some tips about life on the road. “We don’t know how long we’re going to be there for, but we’ll just take a positive approach to it and make the most of our time together.” The Cats comfortably handled Gold Coast last Saturday and it marked the first time since the middle of last season they had won two games on the trot. But they still have a spotty recent record against the best teams in the competition and the Lions absolutely qualify for that. The short week and the start of the long road trip also complicates matters for the Cats. “I am confident we have got the right attitude to it,” coach Chris Scott said. “I can’t guarantee that is going to translate into performance, but we are not going to look back and say it was too hard for us.”

athan Buckley is facing one of the most difficult periods of his time as Collingwood coach as the walls around him are seemingly crumbling to the ground. It started with the resurfacing of racism allegations directed towards the club by 2010 premiership defender Heritier Lumumba, dating back to Buckley’s first years as coach. A fortnight ago it was the near-certain season-ending knee injury to important rebounding defender Jeremy Howe. Then in the hours that followed, star midfielder Steele Sidebottom breached all sorts of COVID-19 rules after a consoling visit to Howe ended with him wandering the streets of Williamstown “half naked” and needing to be driven home by the police, an episode that resulted in a four-match suspension by the AFL. Then came last Saturday’s bombshell that flamboyant forward Jordan De Goey had been charged with one count of indecent assault relating to an incident in 2015, his first season with the club. On the field, things aren’t looking so flash for the Pies, who have lost two straight games and have dropped out of the eight. They squandered an early three-goal lead to Essendon last Friday night, conceded the next eight goals and eventually lost by 15 points after a fightback in the final term.

Road trip pioneers Football is now played in every corner of the country but a ‘Propaganda Round’ caused a stir almost 70 years ago.

ound eight, 1952, was so radical that of course it just had to have its detractors. Just because there was no social media or talkback radio, it doesn’t mean there wasn’t widespread outrage. The idea was grand and ambitious. On the same day and at the same time as Victoria was playing Western Australia at the MCG, the 12 League clubs were dispatched out of town. Capital cities Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart were each allocated a game, as was Albury on the New South Wales-Victorian border and Euroa and Yallourn in regional Victoria. The selling point was that these games would be the real deal, not the usual half-baked games that football fans outside Melbourne and Geelong were used to seeing. As leading football journalist Hec de Lacy wrote in his weekend preview in The Sporting Globe, “No exhibitions these – no social festivals; here is Australian Football at its fiercest, with no man spared and played in the spirit of winner takes all.” There were 40,000 fans at the MCG to see the Vics beat the Sandgropers by nine points. But fans everywhere rushed to their local milk bars that evening to grab their copy of The Globe to read how their favourite League teams fared up and down the eastern seaboard of Australia. The screaming front page headline was that the Essendon-Geelong clash at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground never got started. Torrential rain in

the Queensland capital delayed the game until the following Monday night where it became the first official game in League history to be played under lights. It was worth the wait. More than 28,000 fans – well above expectation and capacity – saw Essendon superstar John Coleman kick 13 goals in a 69-point win. Third in St Kilda’s best and fairest last year, Steele is having another fine season and sits equal second on the competition tackle count chart with 33 in five matches. Another key pressure performance out of last weekend’s games came from Geelong’s Brandan Parfitt. The 22-year-old also had 68.3 pressure points courtesy of 11 tackles and 24 pressure acts against Gold Coast to go with 11 disposals and two goals. Hawthorn, Footscray and North Melbourne joined the League in 1925. Hawthorn had 29 losses to Collingwood before recording its first win against the Magpies in round five, 1942, with an eight-point victory at Glenferrie Oval under coach Roy Cazaly. The Hawks also suffered 25 losses to Carlton before their first victory against the Blues, by three points, also at Glenferrie Oval, in round five, 1939. During 1936, Hawthorn and North Melbourne beat Richmond for the first time. In round 14, the Kangaroos downed the Tigers by eight points at the Arden St Oval after losing their previous 18 clashes against them. In round 16 at Glenferrie Oval, the Hawks won by two points after 21 straight losses against the Tigers. Leo Murphy, grandfather of Carlton’s Marc Murphy, played for Hawthorn that day.

The most important are generally midfielders who gain DEF or FWD status. Steele Sidebottom is the highest-averaging player of the group, but has three weeks to serve of his ban following a COVID-19 indiscretion. Coaches may look to save some cash over the next couple of rounds to afford

the $800K Magpie, who is averaging 94. Sidebottom might also be some consolation for Fantasy Draft owners who have to sit him on the bench. Draft coaches will like the FWD status being added to Tom Phillips, David Swallow and Tom Liberatore. All three players have performed well enough in their careers to justify selection in most leagues. Swallow is the pick of the bunch based on his round five performance. He racked up 94 points to take his average to 70 for the season to place him in the top 20 forwards available. Chris Mayne, Jack Bowes and James Harmes should be free agent targets in Draft leagues if they haven’t been picked up already.

he Western Bulldogs appeared in all sorts of trouble when they were picked apart by St Kilda in round two. Fast forward three weeks and things are very different for the Bulldogs, who have strung together three impressive victories over GWS, Sydney and North Melbourne and are now seen as legitimate contenders. Comparing some numbers from the early run of three defeats to their most recent sparkling form, there are a few obvious elements as to why the Dogs are back in winning form. Looking at it broadly, getting your hands on the ball would have to be the most important part of the game. Without the football,

There are a few areas of the Bulldogs’ game that they’ve changed for the good and, with this formula of intent mixed with defensive structure, they’ll be a tricky side to break down in 2020.
