News from in and around the AFL

EDITOR’S LETTER

unday footy has been a bit hit and miss this season, but the opening game this Sunday stands out as a highlight. It’s at the Gabba with Carlton as the nominal ‘host’, against Port Adelaide. After a slip-up the week before against Brisbane, the Power shut down premiership fancy Greater Western Sydney by 17 points, kicking away after an early goal to Jeremy Finlayson in the final term gave the Giants the lead. Port totally bossed GWS around the contest, winning the clearances 41-25, centre clearances 12-4, stoppage clearances 29-21 and contested possessions 131-129. It underlined the Power’s premiership credentials again. When you can drop Tom Rockliff from the side and not suffer around the contest, you’re going OK. It was a win full of merit and under difficult circumstances. The Power have vacated their Gold Coast hub and returned home to Alberton, but last Sunday they were up by 5am, at the airport by 6am and on the ground at Metricon Stadium by 12.30pm. They were home in Adelaide later that evening. Little wonder they celebrated the win with such gusto. Coach Ken Hinkley even took centre stage during the club song,

UP FOR GRABS: Dan Houston and Harry McKay are sure to lock horns again on Sunday, while (inset) Power coach Ken Hinkley has his team flying on top of the ladder.

a fitting end to a week in which he became a life member of the AFL. Port will need to do it all over again this week. Same state. Same timeslot. Same routine. And they’ll again be running into an opponent brimming with confidence and growing self-belief. A couple of hours after the Richmond-Sydney snooze-fest sparked howls of anguish at the state of the game, along came the Blues who became just the fifth team this year and the first since round two to kick more than 100 points. They played some electrifying football in their 52-point

u It’s been a long five weeks

but hub life is finally over for the four West Australian and South Australian clubs. Take a bow Eagles, Dockers, Crows and Power because without their willingness to ‘take one for the team’, there would be no 2020 season. As they passed the baton to Victorian clubs, they get to bed down in their own homes as

some sort of normality returns to their lives. And it gets even better this week as football returns to two of the best venues in the country – Optus Stadium and Adelaide Oval. Crowds are back, albeit with some restrictions on size, and that is a great boost for fans in Perth and Adelaide.

Back here in Victoria, we are bunkered down for a few more weeks but our thirst to watch the game – wherever it is played – has not waned. Television ratings are through the roof and that will please the AFL’s broadcast partners who have stuck fat during the most difficult season since World War II.

Where it all ends is still a mystery and for the short-term we only know the next two weeks ahead. But the footy has been enjoyable and this week we get to see a couple of terrific games, including the Derby which will be played in front of the biggest crowd since the round two restart. And there’s still 11 rounds to go! AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME demolition of the Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium. It is hard to believe this was the same side that only last year ended a 59-game, 1051-day drought of three-figure scoring. Coach David Teague’s mantra has been for the Blues to enjoy themselves and to play with creativity and flair. That the win was achieved without coskippers Sam Docherty and Patrick Cripps making major contributions was even more noteworthy. “After the game, I selfishly wanted to enjoy the experience of being with the players, the other coaches and the staff,” Teague said, noting that life in the Queensland hub is taking some adjustment for the players. “They’re putting a lot of work in, they’re away from their families. The way they handled themselves today and went about it was really good.” The other notable game this weekend might be the first. Football returns to Western Australia on Thursday night with Geelong and Collingwood meeting at Optus Stadium. The Cats were impressive last week against Brisbane, falling behind early before an incredible third quarter turned the tables. In 25 minutes of football, Geelong had 46 more disposals, 22 more contested possessions, eight more clearances and

eight more inside 50s against one of the premier midfields in the AFL. The Magpies are a bit hit-and-miss, but put a difficult week behind them last Friday to comfortably defeat Hawthorn by 32 points. It was barely watchable at times, but Adam Treloar’s 35 possessions, an equal career-best four-goal haul from Brody Mihocek and some great shut-down defence was enough for the Pies to get the points and fly to Perth for at least the next three weeks in a confident frame of mind.

t took some time, but Izak Rankine’s debut game for Gold Coast against Melbourne last Saturday was worth the wait. The No. 3 pick at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft dazzled from the start and finished with 3.3, although it could easily have been five goals. The 20-year-old was kicking them off the ground and off one-step from 40m out, but did miss two set shots late in the game. To harp on those would be churlish, for this was one of the best debut games for years and it underlined why many rated him the best player from the draft two years ago. “For our footy club, how exciting?” coach Stuart Dew said. “You see what we’ve been waiting for. He had such an impact, which we knew he always would.” Rankine is the third Gold Coast player in just six weeks to be nominated, following Matt Rowell and Connor Budarick. ASHLEY BROWNE

‘Reluctant’ Eagle soars to 250th

I

t’s the season for Josh Kennedy 250-game milestones. Sydney’s Josh P. Kennedy reached his milestone in round four, while West Coast’s Josh J. Kennedy will play his 250th game on Sunday in the Derby against Fremantle. Forgotten over the journey is that the traditional old-school full-forward was a reluctant Eagle. Kennedy was drafted by Carlton with the fourth selection in 2005 and played 22 games and kicked 11 goals in two seasons at Ikon Park. He was just finding his groove with the Blues when he was traded to West Coast at the end of 2007 as part of the Chris Judd deal. Originally from Northampton, just north of Geraldton, he initially needed some convincing to return to his home state. In the end, he was glad he made the switch. With 607 goals, he is the most prolific goalscorer in the club’s history and a healthy debate among West Coast supporters is which of Kennedy or Peter Sumich is the Eagles’ greatest full-forward. Certainly, West Coast fans have their hearts in their mouths when Kennedy crashes packs and his tackling and defensive pressure has earned him rave reviews. And despite his quirky approach to goal, which for a time used to feature those stuttering steps, he is generally a lovely set shot. But his body of work is sublime, including the 2018 premiership, another Grand Final in 2015, second in the best and fairest in 2016, six-time club leading goalkicker, All-Australian selection in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and the 2015 and 2016 Coleman Medals. Derby delight as the AFL roadshow heads west

W

ASHLEY BROWNE

est Australian football is back home and the form line heading into Sunday’s Derby between Fremantle and West Coast could not be more encouraging. The Dockers broke their duck for 2020 a fortnight ago against winless Adelaide, but their season came alive in magnificent fashion last weekend when they spotted St Kilda a 37-point lead before coming back to win by a goal. It was the comeback of the season and arguably the best game of the year, with Fremantle at one stage jumping to a three-goal lead in the final term before the Saints rallied and drew level. But a goal to Lachie Schultz with less than two minutes to go restored the Dockers’ lead and ensured a buoyant flight home as they returned to Perth for the first time in a month. Adding to the importance of the win was that Fremantle played the second half in taxing conditions with Hayden Young (ankle) and Sean Darcy (concussion) unable to return. The Dockers entered the game missing key forwards Jesse Hogan and Cam McCarthy, and then had

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Justin Longmuir and skipper Nat Fyfe celebrate the win against the Saints (top); a tweet from the delighted coach (above); powerful midfielder Elliot Yeo (below) has been in brilliant touch in the past two games and sets the tone for the Eagles.

to move Rory Lobb from the goalsquare to the ruck to replace Darcy, but the midfield started to get on top and the repeat forward entries eventually paid dividends. From quarter-time on, 62 per cent of the game was played in Fremantle’s front half. It was a triumphant afternoon for coach Justin Longmuir, the former Freo big man who has energised the Dockers in his first season in charge. Throughout their 0-4 start, they were nevertheless competitive and his players seem to be relishing the freedom to attack and play to their strengths. “It just reinforced that we’ve got real ticker,” Longmuir said. “We’ve got a lot of players who just never give up. We’ve showed that pretty much all season, but it was just reinforced today.” West Coast also appears to have righted a ship that was listing badly. From coach Adam Simpson down, the Eagles took time to adjust to life in their Queensland hub and were well beaten by Gold Coast, Brisbane and Port Adelaide. But wins over Sydney and the Crows has them back to 3-3 and starting to look like the team that began the season as one of the flag fancies. They’ve had to make do without injured skipper Luke Shuey, but after a quiet month, prized recruit Tim Kelly stepped up against the Crows with 25 touches in his most influential game for the Eagles. The bellwether for West Coast, however, might be Elliot Yeo. When the powerful midfielder is up and about, the Eagles tend to win and that has been the case in the past fortnight. The Dockers are the home team for Sunday’s game, but despite earlier expectations, the crowd will be capped at 30,000 after the WA Government delayed a move to Phase 5 coronavirus restrictions, which would have allowed a capacity crowd at Optus Stadium. It will be the lowest attendance for a Derby clash between the two clubs. The Eagles are aiming for a 10th straight win over Fremantle, which would be a record winning streak in this match-up, which dates back to the opening game between them in 1995.

Like father, like son – 600 of the very best

hen Geelong crosses the line for a unique Thursday night game against Collingwood in Perth, it will mark a rare milestone in the history of the game. Gary Ablett’s presence in this match will see him and Gary Ablett snr become just the second father-son combination to play a combined 600 games (not including Nathan Ablett’s 34 games for the Cats and Suns). In his mercurial and dazzling career through the 1980s and 90s, Ablett snr tallied 248 games for the Cats and Hawthorn. Of those, 242 were in the blue and white hoops. Adding further peculiarity to this occasion is the fact this is Ablett jnr’s 242nd game for Geelong. It is remarkable for this celebrated pair to tick off a monumental milestone while drawing level on appearances for the club they’ve both served so spectacularly. The dual Brownlow medallist also notched up 110 games with the Gold Coast Suns, making this his 352nd game overall. The story has another fascinating coincidence given that the Abletts move beyond Michael and Shane Tuck in reaching the 600 ‘club’. Hawthorn legend Michael compiled a massive 426 games in his seemingly eternal career, while his son Shane played 173 times in Richmond colours for a total of 599 between them (another son Travis played 20 games for the Hawks). The quirk is the Abletts and Tucks are related, as Michael is married to Gary Ablett snr’s sister Fay. The Magpies make an intriguing opponent for this

landmark milestone achieved by one of the game’s greatest father-son combinations. There is a also healthy presence of father-sons wearing the black and white stripes, namely Darcy Moore (son of Peter), Josh Daicos (son of Peter), Callum and Tyler Brown (sons of Gavin) and Will Kelly (son of Craig). Not to mention Ablett’s teammates Tom Hawkins (son of Jack), Jed Bews (son of Andrew) and Sam Simpson (son of Sean), whose fathers served Geelong with distinction. Of course, the Abletts are in pursuit of the Fletchers – Ken and Dustin – who amassed 664 games over a combined 37 seasons with Essendon (Ken played 264 and Dustin 400). It remains to be seen if Gary jnr will play on beyond 2020, which is likely to see the Cats’ royal pairing fall short of the Dons duo. Regardless, becoming just the second father and son pair to 600 only further embeds the Ablett name as symbolic in our great game.

u Mark Naley is

being remembered as a great of South Australian football and an important part of Carlton’s golden era in the 1980s. Naley, who passed away on July 6 aged 59, played more than 200 games for South Adelaide and won the Magarey Medal as best player in the SANFL in 1991. In between two stints with South Adelaide (1980-86 and 1991-93), Naley crossed to Carlton where he played an important role in the Blues’ 1987 premiership. After 65 games with Carlton, he returned to SA where he boasted a fine record in state football. Naley played 16 games for SA and was an All-Australian in 1986 and 1987. He won the Tassie Medal in 1987 and Fos Williams Medal in 1991 as SA’s best player. He was inducted into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame, his club’s Hall of Fame and named in South Adelaide’s Greatest Team Ever. He bravely fought a three-year battle with brain cancer.

he Grand Final rematch is the highlight of the round eight fixture, which was released by the AFL on Monday evening. It will be the Friday night game at Giants Stadium, as the GWS Giants look to exact a modicum of revenge for the 89-point thrashing in last year’s flag decider. The round will begin the previous night with some prime-time exposure for the fast-rising Gold Coast, which will host the Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium, in a game that will be telecast by Fox Footy. It will be the first time the Suns have played a regular season game not on a Saturday or a Sunday. Geelong will face an almost unprecedented 11-day break ahead of its round eight match. Based in Western Australia for the foreseeable future, the Cats play Collingwood at Optus Stadium on Thursday night to start

round seven, and will then play Fremantle two Mondays later. The Magpies, who are also based in Perth while their Victorian home is off-limits because of COVID-19 restrictions, will play West Coast the previous afternoon. The Dockers-Cats game will be on Fox Footy, while the reprisal of the heated Eagles-Pies rivalry will be played out on free-to-air TV on the Seven Network. Geelong and Collingwood will then swap opponents in round nine, with the Cats playing West Coast and the Dockers meeting the Magpies. Hawthorn and Carlton will then be joining them in Western Australia. Port Adelaide’s long wait for a return to Adelaide Oval is over with a Saturday night game against St Kilda. It will be the Power’s first game there since round two, but St Kilda’s second in five days after their clash with Adelaide this Monday night. The Saints have been based in Noosa since leaving Victoria, although it is unclear whether they will remain in South Australia between games. Other matches are North Melbourne v Carlton (Gabba), Sydney v Hawthorn (SCG),

TOP BILLING: 2019 Grand Finalists Richmond and the GWS Giants will renew hostilities in round eight at Optus Stadium.

The Giants look to exact a modicum of revenge Adelaide v Essendon (Adelaide Oval) and Melbourne v Brisbane (Metricon Stadium). The release of the fixtures from rounds nine through 12 will follow in the next few days and with it the likelihood of four games over three weeks for every club ahead of a return home for a brief break for the Victorian clubs and with it the potential for a split round and a bye week as the AFL takes advice about whether games can be played in Melbourne and Geelong once more. u See fixture page 30

Challenging times for master coach

UP FOR THE FIGHT: Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has long shown he is at his best when under pressure.

F

Marc Murphy

ASHLEY BROWNE

our premierships and his standing as the greatest coach in the game haven’t counted for much this week as Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson finds himself under the microscope. The Hawks might be 3-3, but their percentage is a lousy 84 and their 3.9 (27) against Collingwood last week was their lowest score in a game since 1975. The Hawks have had a tough draw and have suffered key injuries in the opening quarter of their past two games, with Mitch Lewis a fortnight ago and Jonathon Patton last week robbing them of their No. 1 key forwards and Clarkson unable to make meaningful in-game adjustments. It is unclear when either will return. In spite of that, Hawthorn is a difficult team to watch and the speed and flair has largely disappeared from its game. Its forward line has become dysfunctional. Clarkson has been here before. One of his unheralded coaching achievements came in 2010 when, after a 1-6 start and president Jeff Kennett considering moving him on, Clarkson changed the game-plan literally overnight and the Hawks made the finals. u FOOTY FUNNIES – Bob Dikkenberg

WEST COAST/CARLTON In 2017, they were 1-5, but ended up only being eliminated from the finals race in round 22. And there are some reinforcements coming. Speedy defender Jarman Impey played a practice match last Saturday, his first in 12 months following an ACL injury, while Shaun Burgoyne, Jack Scrimshaw and Luke Breust are also imminent returns. The more interesting discussion around Clarkson is what happens with Hawthorn in the medium to long-term. He is committed to the Hawks until the end of 2022, having knocked back overtures from several clubs – notably Carlton and North Melbourne – in recent years. However, four-time premiership Hawk Jordan Lewis this week

addressed what many Hawthorn supporters are already thinking when it comes to Clarkson’s future. “So whether he has that energy in him or whether it’s a Sam Mitchell who’s just sitting in waiting who has that energy and the smarts and the football IQ to take over the reins and take that club forward through the transition period,” he told SEN. That’s a discussion that will linger all year. Meanwhile, there is Sunday’s match-up with Melbourne at Giants Stadium and the expectation that the pugnacious Clarkson will delve deep into his bag of tricks. He has long shown he is at his best when backed into a corner.

What I’m thinking

FULL HOUSE: With a capacity of 75,000, ANZ Stadium looks the best alternative to the MCG (inset) for the Grand Final.

T

he most unusual season in the history of the game is more than likely to have the most unusual last act, a Grand Final played elsewhere than the MCG. Given the growing COVID-19 numbers in Victoria, it is unlikely the MCG will be close to full capacity for the Grand Final whenever it is played, either late October or early November. Yes, there is a contract between the AFL and the Melbourne Cricket Club to play the flag decider there until 2057, but AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan loves nothing better than cutting a deal. This is the year to negotiate an outcome that allows the game to be played in front of a packed house, which should be the minimum requirement for the showpiece event in Australian sport. Let’s handicap the field in the event, admittedly sad, that the 2020 Grand Final is on the move.

GABBA, QLD

The case for: The Queensland Government basically saved the 2020 season by allowing AFL clubs, first from South Australia and Western Australia and then from Victoria, to relocate to various hubs in the sunshine state. What better way to thank Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk and her state by handing them the Grand Final? The case against: The ground. The Gabba is the most drab and soulless stadium in Australia. Not even the locals like going there.

14  AFL RECORD

THE SCG, NSW

For: One of the true cathedrals of Australian sport and, with a listed capacity of 46,817, it can fit in plenty of people. The new grandstands are pretty good and the nearby amenities up and down Oxford St would add to the build-up. Against: It has one of the worst shapes of any AFL venue, almost as wide as it is long. And can we trust the Sydney weather? Any ground that still has a centre wicket area doesn’t deserve the Grand Final.

ANZ STADIUM, NSW

For: Who cares if it isn’t listed in the AFL Record Season Guide? With the redevelopment now cancelled (ironically thanks to COVID-19), it can be converted to an oval shape once more and, with a 75,000 capacity, it is easily the largest stadium in the country after the MCG. As the NRL State of Origin and finals and Socceroo matches have shown, it is an electric venue when full. And wouldn’t NRL supremo Peter V’Landys hate it. Against: Hasn’t staged an AFL game since 2016 and nobody has lamented its absence.

ADELAIDE OVAL, SA

For: Would be a great reward for some courageous footy people in South Australia who cast aside their long-standing feud with their cricket counterparts to create a magnificent shared home for their two sports. It remains the most picturesque AFL venue and the entertainment precinct around the ground works superbly.

It is an electric venue when full

Outside the Australian Open tennis, the Adelaide Test might have the best party atmosphere in the country. Against: There are a couple of other venues with a larger capacity. The grass hill behind the goal could get a bit messy after a long day at the footy.

OPTUS STADIUM, WA

For: The best stadium in Australia and winner of several global awards, it has raised the bar for every other ground, even the mighty MCG. The atmosphere is great for a day game, but when the sun goes down and the LED comes into effect, it is truly spectacular. Against: Perth is a long way away and amid all the anecdotal evidence about how hard it is for WA fans to get to Melbourne for the Grand Final, imagine the reverse if two sets of supporters are trying to get to the other side of the country. We would have to settle for a Grand Final with lots of neutral fans, which might detract from the buzz.

THE VERDICT ANZ Stadium is not everyone’s cup of tea, but after the year we’re having, the least the AFL can do is play the Grand Final where the most people can watch it. Provided the borders are open, it’s off to Homebush we go.

phenomenal comeback against St Kilda in round six. Justin Longmuir’s side found itself behind by 37 points in the second quarter before pulling off a memorable six-point win after it appeared dead and buried. It was their attack on the footy and their fierceness around the contest which allowed the Dockers to force their way back into proceedings and it was one of their younger players who led the way. Andrew Brayshaw was among Fremantle’s best in the stunning comeback, racking up 20 possessions, accompanied by two clearances, four score involvements and a goal assist, but the ball-winning side of his game only told half the story. According to Champion Data, the highly-rated youngster had a game-high 63.2 pressure points from 28 pressure acts while laying five tackles, making it an accomplished showing both in attack and defence. The 20-year-old, who was pick two in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft, endured a slow start to 2020, but there is no doubting his talent and his past two performances coincided with wins, showing just how important he is to the Dockers. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75).

ANSWER MAN GUEST

I notice that Brodie Grundy recorded 30 disposals in a match in 2019. How many times has a 200cm player (or taller) recorded 30-plus disposals in match? TOPHER GRACE, BLACKBURN, VIC LE: Across AFL/VFL history, there have been 190 players standing at 200cm or more play the game. Only 14 have had 30 or more disposals in a match. Ten of those have had 30-plus disposals and at least one goal in the same match. Collingwood superstar Len Thompson was the first player to achieve the feat, back in round three, 1969. He was just 21 years and 235 days old. It took another 21 years for the next player to achieve the feat – Hawthorn’s Stephen Lawrence, was even younger – 21 years and 111 days old. Three years later, St Kilda’s Peter ‘Spider’ Everitt broke Lawrence’s record. Everitt was only 19 years and 75 days old. He is still the youngest and fastest player to achieve this stat. Paul Salmon, then with Hawthorn, is the oldest 200cm-plus player to record 30-plus disposals, at the age of 33 years and 151 days. Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands and Grundy are the only 200cm-plus players in history to have had 30 or more disposals, kick one or more goals, record 30 or more hit-outs and poll three Brownlow Medal votes all in one match.

u The surname of

Adelaide’s Rory Laird is of Scottish origin, coming from an old Gaelic word denoting a land owner. Laird is probably connected to the English word ‘lord’. In the latter English form, it was usually bestowed as a nickname either for someone who had played the role of a lord in medieval plays or for someone who behaved in a ‘lordly’ way. Three other Lairds have played at senior level, the best being South Melbourne’s Charles, who kicked the winning goal in the dying seconds of the 1918 Grand Final. Six Lords, including Geelong Brownlow medallist Alistair and four-time Melbourne premiership player John, have played at senior level.

aside from Lachie Neale (ADP 12), value was to be found in Taylor Adams (ADP 64, average 91), Jarryd Lyons (ADP 59, average 90) and Jack Steele (ADP 71, average 89). Sam Docherty’s ADP of 11 was a little surprising considering he was coming back from two ACL injuries, but he has well and truly justified the high selection with his 89 average. Nick Haynes ranks as the second of all defenders and, with an ADP of 113, could be the value pick of the year if he continues his 84 average. Challenging Haynes for the biggest draft bargain is Jy Simpkin. Averaging 84, the Roo has an ADP of 219 and ranks as the second-best forward, behind Christian Petracca (ADP 90, average 89).

After an outstanding start to the year, the hard-running winger has been kept quiet in the past fortnight with scores of 66 and 52. A return home should see a significant change in fortune where he averages 115 (before COVID).

After a sensational season last year, many coaches jumped on the Pies’ hard-running defender, but it hasn’t gone to plan. He has a top score of just 82 for the year and he just knocked up his third score in the 50s last weekend. Upgrade.

BRODIE GRUNDY

WEST COAST DEF, $566,000

With premium defenders hard to come by at the moment, Mills has put his hand up. He took his recent good form to the next level last weekend with a round-high 125 from 29 touches and nine marks. He is a nice unique option.

One quiet game in two years and some owners are calling for the Pig’s head. Take a deep breath and reverse the trade. Remember when he scored you 117 and 113 before last week. He will bounce back this week like a champion.

The temptation to give him one last chance back at home is definitely a play for the patient coaches out there but scores of 53, 53, 61, 54 and 34 in his most recent games are enough to break even the most stubborn of us.

Drafts were completed before the season started and, while we didn’t exactly know what we were in for this year, we can make a call on which picks were winners and which weren’t. ADP stands for ‘average draft pick’, that is the average position players were taken in all of the drafts completed this year. Generally, players taken in the first couple of rounds have performed as expected. Brodie Grundy was the consensus No. 1 selection and that has been justified as he is the fourth-highest scorer. Interestingly though, Max Gawn (ADP 5) and Todd Goldstein (ADP 50) have scored more than the ‘Ruck Pig’ this season. Looking across the top-scoring midfielders,

The Saints recruit has put on a great show for his coaches to start the season, but his scores have dried up in the past two games with 59 and 27. It might be a good idea to sell high after gaining $172K since the start of the year.

Last week’s No. 1 trade target certainly didn’t disappoint in a tough match-up with the Power. He overcame a slow start to dominate the second half, eventually finishing with 108 from 25 touches and eight marks.

As Chad tends to do, he is having a little slump after starting the year on fire. Although his past two scores of 62 and 42 are disappointing, he is a gun and will be back to his best in no time, so stay strong.

Adelaide continues to give up the most Fantasy points to its opponents. Midfielders and forwards especially have a good time. The Tigers give up plenty to rucks.

Behind Sun Matt Rowell (+$257K), the highest-earning cash cows have been Curtis Taylor (+$209K), Laitham Vandermeer (+$197K) and Brandon Starcevich (+$192K).

It took until round six, but Lachie Neale posted his first sub-100 score. Albeit two points shy with 98, he is now priced at $956K, a season price change of +$179K.

ANALYSIS

Ranking the fixture

T

NIC NEGREPONTIS

he fixture is one of the great question marks looming over the 2020 season, with the AFL literally taking it one week at a time. Despite this, we know that every team will play each other once. We don’t know where these games will be played or when, but at the very least we know who each team still has left to play. Because of this, we can work out who has the toughest remaining fixture and who has the easiest, to an extent. We have ranked all 18 teams from first to last based on a number of factors and attempting to judge every team holistically, rather than reacting to results week by week.

30

AFL RECORD

Using this ranking, we can work out who has the toughest fixture ahead, based on who they have not played yet. OUR RANKING: 1. Port Adelaide, 2. Collingwood, 3. Brisbane, 4. GWS, 5. Geelong, 6. Richmond, 7. West Coast, 8. Essendon, 9. Western Bulldogs, 10. St Kilda, 11. Carlton, 12. Hawthorn, 13. Fremantle, 14. Melbourne, 15. Gold Coast, 16. North Melbourne, 17. Sydney, 18. Adelaide. For our strength of schedule, this means playing Port Adelaide is worth 18 points of difficulty (reverse of ladder), playing Adelaide is worth one point, St Kilda is nine points and so on. Those rankings could be argued for eternity, but we feel it’s a simple way to order the teams based on form and overall expected form. West Coast and Fremantle have also received a slight bump up given we know they will have a long run of home games coming up. With that, here’s what we’ve learned based on the 11 (or 12) teams your side is yet to play.
