Déjà vu as Tigers out to crush Giants again

EDITOR’S LETTER

ast year’s Grand Final was one for the dustbin, an 89-point yawner that was fantastic for Richmond but had non-Tigers struggling to keep interested even before the half-time siren. The GWS Giants meet the Tigers on Friday night at Giants Stadium in the rematch, but the contrasting events of the past fortnight would suggest nothing much will be changing. There were question marks over Richmond as it entered life in its Queensland hub a fortnight ago. Skipper Trent Cotchin was nursing another hamstring injury, Dion Prestia, Toby Nankervis and David Astbury were also injured, while Bachar Houli and Shane Edwards elected to remain home to be with their families. The Tigers slogged to victory in the “horrendous game” against Sydney before last week totally putting the clamps on North Melbourne at Metricon Stadium, in which great performances from youngsters Shai Bolton, Derek Eggmolesse-Smith and Jack Higgins were a feature. And despite the missing personnel, Richmond’s trademark discipline and structure continues to stand up well. u At the time of this edition

STARK CONTRAST: The Tigers are gathering momentum on the back of youngsters such as Shai Bolton, while the struggling Giants have bitter memories of their painful 2019 Grand Final defeat.

The same cannot be said for GWS, which has had a really poor two weeks. Losses to Port Adelaide and Brisbane suggest the Giants are way off flag contention, and the undisciplined acts and concentration lapses are alarming. Recently-retired former Giant (and Tiger) Brett Deledio said there isn’t much cohesion about GWS when things turn sour in games. “They all try to use their own ability to win the game versus trying to do it together,” Deledio told ABC Grandstand. “That’s where they ultimately fall down ... because it’s a bunch of 22 individuals versus a collective team.” But while there is trepidation ahead of one recent Grand Final

of the AFL Record hitting its weekly deadline, we are not sure how the season looks beyond this week’s round eight fixture. We do know that many games are going to be crowded over a four-week period to cover rounds nine-12 – and that will have an impact on the Record.

The normal weekly cycle will be difficult to maintain as games and rounds are played over consecutive days. It means maintaining regular items such as updated scoreboard and stats pages will be difficult but, in the words of AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, we will be “nimble and agile”. Please bear with us during this period and we might be a

week or round out with some components of the Record, including the weekly NAB AFL Rising Star nominee and Fantasy details. The great news is we have smashed the one-million mark for views of our online version and we thank our readers for their loyal support. The print edition will continue in Victoria via

newsagents, Coles and Coles Express and we are now back selling at venues in Adelaide and Perth. Due to health regulations in some northern states, we are unable to sell at those venues, but we are working with officials to rectify the situation. Please be patient during what will be a testing period for everyone. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME rematch this weekend, there is excitement and anticipation about another, with 2018 combatants West Coast and Collingwood clashing at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Both come into the game in good nick. The Eagles have won three straight after an earlier shaky start to hub life in Queensland, while the Magpies have dispatched Hawthorn and Geelong. The Eagles weren’t happy campers initially in their hub before winning their last two games in Queensland, but they clearly relished being back on their home deck – even as the away team – last Sunday with a polished performance against Fremantle, complete with the fairytale ending. Spearhead Josh Kennedy celebrated his 250th game with a four-goal haul, earning him the Glendinning-Allan Medal for best afield. It was a record-breaking 10th straight Derby win by the Eagles. Even discounting the myriad of issues caused by having to relocate, Collingwood has had a tumultuous season. Jeremy Howe’s injury, Steele Sidebottom’s COVID-19 breach suspension and Jordan De Goey’s indecent assault charge were distractions that might have collectively brought the Pies to their knees. But they might just have emboldened them further.

MAGPIE BLOW: Match-winner Jordan De Goey will miss the next two months with a finger injury.

WEEKLY WINNERS WEEK CHARLIE 7 WINIARSKI

The absence of Howe, perhaps the premier rebounding defender in the competition, was thought to be a huge blow for Collingwood, but he has barely been missed and over the past fortnight the Magpies’ backline has conceded just eight goals. In five of their seven games this year, the Pies have had five goals or less kicked against them and their 298 points against is the fewest in the League. De Goey was spectacular against Geelong, kicking five of Collingwood’s eight goals. But in keeping with a season where nothing is straightforward for the Magpies, it was revealed the next morning he had suffered a finger tendon injury and would be sidelined for the next two months.

NAB AFL Rising Star THE STORY SO FAR...

M

att Rowell’s likely season-ending shoulder injury against Geelong in round five was greeted with universal sadness among all in footy. He wasn’t just a rising star, but already a genuine star. But despite three games of absolute brilliance, the injury all but ensures Rowell, last year’s No. 1 draft, pick won’t win the 2020 NAB AFL Rising Star Award. But chances are strong a teammate could take home the coveted prize later this year. Izak Rankine and Connor Budarick have also been nominated, while Noah Anderson, the No. 2 pick

6  AFL RECORD

who played well in the win over the Swans last week, has yet to be tabbed but surely will before long. Fellow 2019 draftees Luke Jackson, Hayden Young, Kysaiah Pickett, Will Day, Cody Weightman, Jack Mahony, Fischer McAsey and Lachie Ash are among those who have done some nice work at AFL level and who can expect to be nominated before the end of the season. Of those drafted in 2018 and coming under notice this season are James Rowbottom, Will Hamill, Laitham Vandermeer, Ned McHenry, Brayden Ham and Jake Aarts.

ONE WEEK at a TIME RIGHT IN THE HUNT: The Lions, led by star defender Harris Andrews, are passing every examination, while the Magpies (below) have continued to defy the odds.

High marks for some We’re almost at the halfway mark of a season like no other, so it is time to mark the report cards of all 18 clubs. Senior ‘master’ ASHLEY BROWNE has made his assessments. ADELAIDE CROWS It’s been a drag of a year and the Crows are at good odds to receive the first wooden spoon in club history. Coach Matthew Nicks will start playing the long game as the rebuild begins in earnest and patience will be needed. A run of games at Adelaide Oval is a bonus. GRADE: E

BRISBANE LIONS

In a year like this, the Lions have one huge ace up their sleeve – plenty of games at the Gabba. They are 4-0 at home, but their most impressive win was last Saturday over GWS at Giants Stadium, putting to bed doubts they can win on the road. Harris Andrews is one of the best defenders in the AFL, while the midfield is as good any going around. GRADE: B

CARLTON

Hard to believe the Blues, once the most offensively-challenged club in the competition, are now the great entertainers. They have match-winners emerging across every line and the benefits of age and experience are starting to show. Can former list manager Stephen Silvagni be awarded a second life membership for securing Jack Martin for nothing? GRADE: B+

COLLINGWOOD

Good luck scoring against the Pies. They’ve conceded five goals or less in all but two matches and not even the loss of Jeremy Howe seems to

8  AFL RECORD

have affected them. If the midfield stays reasonably healthy – always an ‘if’ with the Magpies – then they’re destined to play until late into the season. GRADE: B-

ESSENDON

The gap between Essendon’s best and worst remains large. In the space of a fortnight the Bombers beat Collingwood and were thrashed by the Western Bulldogs. Midfield depth and effective key forwards remain an issue, but they have found a few players such as Jordan Ridley, Brayden Ham and Will Snelling. It’s 5800 days and counting since their last finals win. GRADE: C

FREMANTLE

Justin Longmuir has Fremantle playing with attack and flair and the comeback win over St Kilda a fortnight ago was testimony to that. The youngsters show promise but progress will be slow and there will be setbacks, such as the Derby loss to West Coast last Sunday. GRADE: C

GEELONG CATS

Last week’s loss to Collingwood probably confirmed what many suspect – the Cats are a good team in 2020, but not a great one. They need to be able to play the game on their terms – quick and direct, but were shut down by the Pies. No Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood for at least the next fortnight offers Geelong’s next generation a great opportunity. GRADE: C

GOLD COAST SUNS

Hard to believe the Blues are now the great entertainers

It’s been a season of promise for the Suns and, in a way, last week’s win at the SCG was their best for the year. The emerging group was challenged at times, but kept finding the answers. Matt Rowell kick-started their season and Izak Rankine after just two games is a must-watch. Lots more home games to come, too. GRADE: B+

GWS GIANTS

Looking increasingly likely that the Giants will not get the opportunity to avenge last year’s Grand Final humiliation. Appeared to have got things going, but the

SEN.com.au

AR08 p08-09 OneWeek 275.indd 8

20/7/20 5:41 pm

has been poor and at 3-4 they have their work cut out to even play finals. Undisciplined at times and few on their list have improved. GRADE: D-

HAWTHORN

Hard to believe two of Hawthorn’s three wins this year were against Brisbane and Richmond. The Hawks are as poor now as any time in the Alastair Clarkson era and the time to drop under-performing veterans and play the kids is drawing closer. The Sydney hub has been disastrous for them. GRADE: D-

MELBOURNE

Interesting that Melbourne’s form turnaround corresponded with a blistering form analysis from former skipper and SEN broadcaster Garry Lyon. But the Demons appear well set now with Christian Petracca in career-best form and the midfielders and forwards getting their connectivity right. Ruthless against the Hawks last Sunday. GRADE: C+

NORTH MELBOURNE

On the podium for the most disappointing team in the competition. Two wins to start, five defeats since and less competitive by the week. The appetite for the contest isn’t there and soft tissue injuries to Ben Cunnington and Jack Ziebell haven’t helped. Getting nothing from spearhead

Ben Brown, either, although the delivery from the midfield has been below par. GRADE: E

PORT ADELAIDE

Forget just making the finals to save Ken Hinkley’s job. Port is in the premiership hunt up to its ears after a brilliant start to the season. The Power have won six from seven and now have a host of home games. In the year of the small forward, Charlie Dixon is flying the flag for the old-fashioned big bloke playing out of the square. GRADE: A

RICHMOND

When you’ve won two of the past three flags, you shouldn’t be sneaking up on the rest of the competition, but that’s what the Tigers are doing. Missing a host of big names, they’re chalking up the wins and their depth of talent should hold them in good stead as the fixture cram approaches and some missing stars return. GRADE: B-

ST KILDA

Great to watch when the ‘run and gun’ is at its best, but ‘cover your eyes awful’ when not. Case in point against Fremantle when the Saints jumped to a 37-point lead only to lose by a goal. Emerging key forward Max King is giving

MIXED RESULTS: Reigning premier Richmond is quietly tracking towards another top-four finish (above left); Tom Papley (above right) is the one shining light for the struggling Swans; Charlie Dixon (below) has been a powerhouse for dux of the class, Port Adelaide.

St Kilda fans a reason to tune in every week. GRADE: B-

SYDNEY SWANS

Playing the kids now and with Lance Franklin, Isaac Heeney and Josh Kennedy all sidelined by injury, the Swans really have no choice. Like the look of James Rowbottom. And thank heavens they kept the mercurial Tom Papley from joining Carlton. He has been the one shining light. GRADE: C-

WEST COAST EAGLES

The Eagles went to their Queensland hub with their noses out of joint and played accordingly, at least at the start. But they averted disaster just in time and have found some form as the fixture opens up for them perfectly with a swag of home games to come. Who knows, a home Grand Final might be in their future. GRADE: C

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Perhaps no team is more emblematic of the topsy-turvy season we’re enjoying. They’ve had winning margins of 24, 28, 49 and 42 points. But when they lose, they lose big – 52, 39 and 52 points. The forward line remains a work in progress, which might explain why they’re so hard to get a handle on. GRADE: B AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  9

ASHLEY BROWNE

t has taken nine-and-a-half seasons, but Gold Coast reaches a significant milestone when it hosts the Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium in the opening game of round eight on Thursday night. It will be the first time the Suns have played a game for premiership points on a day other than a Saturday or Sunday and it is the first standalone, prime-time game in club history. Even then it comes with the slight asterisk that in Victoria the game is not on free-to-air TV and, in a strange piece of programming, Channel Seven will be screening the popular The Front Bar at the same time as the game. But the Suns, who are 4-3 and have re-signed coach Stuart Dew until 2022, are truly deserving of some prime-time action as they have become one of the more watchable teams in the competition. They have stockpiled some of the best young talent in the country over the past three drafts and this year they have started to emerge. We got a glimpse of the brilliant 2019 No. 1 draft pick Matt Rowell before a likely season-ending shoulder injury, and in two games, Izak Rankine has shown why many believed he should have been the No. 1 selection at the previous year’s draft. Has any player compiled a better highlights reel through his first two games than the 20-year-old excitement machine from South Australia? Fellow 2018 draftees Jack Lukosius and Ben King have found their groove, while other high draft picks Noah Anderson, Jack Bowes, Ben Ainsworth and Connor Budarick are also growing by the week. The prime-time game is also a nice reward for foundation Suns Andrew Swallow, Jarrod Harbrow and Sam Day, who have put in the hard yards and experienced some tough times at the club. Day, in particular, might be in career-best form.

The Western Bulldogs (4-3) are the most enigmatic team in the competition. Brilliant when they win, awful when they don’t. They have not played a game this season in which the result has been less than four goals. They turned in their most complete performance of the season when they beat Essendon by 42 points at Metricon Stadium last Friday night, but nobody, from coach Luke Beveridge down, would know what to expect from week to week.

PURPLE PASSION: Hayden Ballantyne celebrates one of his 254 goals for the Dockers, and (below) being carried from the ground by fellow retiree Aaron Sandilands last season.

STILL CHASING A CUP DREAM He was once a cheeky – and talented – small forward, but former Docker Hayden Ballantyne has set new goals in his sporting life. He speaks to SEN’s SAM EDMUND. THIS CHAT IS PRIMARILY ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO AND THROUGH THE AFL, BUT GIVE IT A FEW MORE YEARS AND IT MIGHT BE ABOUT TRAINING MELBOURNE CUP WINNERS. YOU’RE BUILDING A NICE LITTLE STABLE AS A TRAINER OVER THERE IN PERTH. u Yeah, absolutely. It’s funny you said about Melbourne Cup winners. Whenever I do win a race I tell all the boys to start calling me Bart, after Bart Cummings. That would be quite nice to get over there to Melbourne and win some of those big races, but I’ve got a nice little team coming up, so it’s good fun. YOU AND NICK SUBAN OWNED THE PERTH CUP WINNER TALENT SHOW IN 2013. THAT WAS TRAINED BY YOUR OLD MAN GRAEME, WASN’T IT? u Yeah it was. We bought into her and my Dad originally trained her for her first owner and won her first three races and then they parted ways. Then a couple of years later Dad said this horse is available, you should buy it because I think it will win a Perth Cup. And sure enough two years later it won the Perth Cup, so he’s not a bad judge, the old boy, and me and Nick were lucky enough to get on board. IN 2005 YOU GOT TO WAFL LEVEL. YOU JOIN PEEL THUNDER AND YOU’RE PLAYING AS A MIDFIELDER. u I played a couple of years at Colts level as well, in 2004 and 2005 for

12  AFL RECORD

Peel Thunder, and then in 2006 started with the League side and played as a midfielder. It wasn’t until about 2008 Chris Waterman, ex-West Coast player, he was our coach and he said, “Why don’t you try as a small forward?” Probably one of the best moves I ever made. YOU KICKED 75 GOALS THAT YEAR IN 2008. YOU WON THE SANDOVER MEDAL AND THE PEEL THUNDER B&F … A MAKE-OR-BREAK YEAR. u Definitely. I got the trifecta. I had a really good year, a really consistent year. I was always able to play good games here and there, but that was just a solid, consistent year where every time I just did the basics right and played well. BY LATE 2008, YOU’RE 21 AND YOU’RE VERY MUCH ON THE AFL RECRUITING RADAR. u It was obviously a good season and I had a chat with quite a few clubs. Coming into the draft it was quite exciting for me. THE DOCKERS ENDED UP TAKING YOU WITH THEIR SECOND PICK. DID YOU KNOW THEY WERE GOING TO TAKE YOU AND WHAT DID IT MEAN TO YOU? u They said they were keen on me with that pick, but West Coast also said they were keen on me with pick 21 and Hawthorn with their first pick, which I think was 18 or something like that. There were a few clubs I had

I tell all the boys to start calling me Bart, after Bart Cummings BUDDING HORSE TRAINER HAYDEN BALLANTYNE

spoken to. Port Adelaide had pick 24 or 25 and they were all around that time when I thought I was going to get picked up. But when the first couple of clubs didn’t call my name out, I started getting really nervous. But luckily enough at 21 Freo read my name out. THE COACH AT THE TIME WAS MARK HARVEY. WHAT WAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP LIKE WITH ‘HARVS’? u Really strong. We bonded quite well because I think we’re similar type of people, both used to play similarly. He was a bit of a hard nut, I suppose you’d say. He really enjoyed the physical nature of football and I do as well, so we got on really well. HARVEY WAS UNEXPECTEDLY SACKED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2011 AFTER THE DOCKERS MISSED THE FINALS. WAS THERE SYMPATHY FOR HARVS FROM THE PLAYING GROUP? u Absolutely. We all got on with Harvs really well and rated him as a coach. I suppose you would say he was a very old school coach. He really pumped the players up. Emotionally driven. Got us up and about for a game, but sometimes I didn’t think that would get you through a full season to play finals and win a premiership. But when he got sacked it was a bit of anger I suppose. They’ve sacked my mate and what’s going to happen now? Then Ross Lyon came across and he was a lot different to Harvs, very position-oriented, very defensive-oriented, really took us forward quickly with what he brought to the club. WHAT WAS THAT FIRST MEETING LIKE BETWEEN THE PLAYERS AND ROSS? u To be honest, it was a bit awkward. Ross came over, was a different coach, different philosophies on how he goes about it, and it took a while. More so the words he was using in his meetings. It was like, what does that mean? I had no idea, some of the stuff he was coming out with. Me and Aaron (Sandilands) would look at each other, get a dictionary out sometimes and think, what was that word? But then it all started to click, about probably eight or nine games in to 2012. Everything started to click – his game-plan clicked, what he wanted to bring to the game clicked, and we became a really hard team to play against. DID IT COME NATURALLY TO PLAY THE SO-CALLED VILLAIN ON THE FIELD? u It didn’t come naturally, but it wasn’t something I had to work on. Once I realised it’s a nasty game sometimes, and that came from our last game in

He just laid one on my chin BALLANTYNE DESCRIBING BEING ON THE RECEIVING END OF CAT STAR MATTHEW SCARLETT

2009 against Geelong down at the Cattery, Matty Scarlett stuck his knee into ‘Pav’ (Matthew Pavlich) really hard in a marking contest and had a few words afterwards, and I was dirty on myself because I didn’t go over and remonstrate with him. THE REAL FLASHPOINT CAME IN THE SEASON-OPENER IN 2012. u Paul Chapman, he was our target player for that game. Ryan Crowley was the tagger at the time and Chapman was out (by himself). He had a good 15 or 20m on ‘Crowls’ and I thought I’ve got to stop this bloke. So I’ve come off my line and laid a good bump on him and he obviously didn’t see me coming because he was pretty winded, and I got a few weeks for that. One of our young blokes ran down Matty Scarlett, got him holding the ball, and we kicked a goal, so I just went and gave him a few choice words, saying your six All-Australians count for not much at the moment – not in those words – and how do you feel? And he just laid one on my chin. SEVEN YEARS LATER YOUR LITTLE BROTHER MITCHELL ORGANISES FOR MATTHEW SCARLETT TO SEND YOU A PRESENT FOR YOUR 31ST BIRTHDAY, AND ‘SCARLO’ SENDS OVER A FRAMED GEELONG JUMPER WITH SOME SPECIAL MESSAGING ON IT.

u Yeah, the messaging was all

Scarlo’s highlights. It was six All-Australians, Geelong legends team, three premierships and “punching you in the face”. So they were his career highlights he reckons. At the bottom it said “Would have loved playing with you” as well, so it was a bit of a nice sentiment.

YOU MAKE A SEMI-FINAL IN ROSS’ FIRST YEAR AS COACH IN 2012 AND YOU GO ALL THE WAY TO THE GRAND FINAL IN 2013 AGAINST HAWTHORN. u Our attacking style of play at Freo up until 2012 was very good. We could kick goals, we could get big scores, but our defensive side of the game wasn’t a strength, and I think that was what Ross focused on a lot. Defend first, and turn your defence into attack. It was an absolute pleasure to play with guys like Matty Pavlich, Luke McFarlane, Aaron Sandilands, Paul Duffield. UNFORTUNATELY, ON THE (GRAND FINAL) DAY YOU AND THE DOCKERS WERE WASTEFUL. u I just didn’t execute on the day. I had four shots on goal for two points. One didn’t make the distance and one was out of bounds, so it was just execution which really let me down. And same for a couple of other blokes who didn’t execute when they were in front of the goal. It wasn’t an effort thing, it wasn’t a mental thing.

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

No-show Crows fail to deliver In a football-mad state and city, Adelaide has been left floundering.

T

he 30th season of the Adelaide Crows hasn’t been much cause for celebration. Last on the ladder, big names injured and an ill-fated training camp held more than two years ago that is still the source of endless discussion and forensic investigation. And COVID-19 sitting atop all that. The failures of the Crows get illuminated even more when just up the road (not across town, a mistake we ignorant Victorians make too regularly) Port Adelaide is enjoying such a great season. But I find Adelaide as a club to be truly baffling. The Crows should be an absolute powerhouse of the AFL. They are the No. 1 team of a football-mad state. South Australia has been and always will be massively important. Yet as a club, the Crows have serially underachieved. Two flags in consecutive years in the late 1990s and one Grand Final appearance since then. A serious and chronic inability to retain elite talent and some questionable decision-making when it comes to bringing that quality into the club. And some coaching appointments that never worked out. Talk to people and the Crows aren’t particularly influential when it comes to the game’s big picture. Port Adelaide chairman David Koch has anyone from the Crows well covered when it comes to having a national football voice. If we’re talking movers and shapers in football, the leading

14  AFL RECORD

Crows identity would be AFLW superstar Erin Phillips. The player retention has long been an issue. Chances are strong that the Crows would have at least one more premiership cup in the cabinet had some or most of Patrick Dangerfield, Jack Gunston, Jake Lever, Charlie Cameron and Phil Davis, to name just a few, committed to the club for their entire careers. Each had their reasons for leaving. But if the outstanding football culture and traditions of Adelaide, the city, were translated to Adelaide, the club, then most of those aforementioned players would still be there. The Crows just haven’t created the elite environment that players find too tough to walk away from. Some have argued that when it comes to player retention and recruiting, Adelaide is a tougher sell than Melbourne with its gravitas, Sydney with its charms and both south-east Queensland and Western Australia with their climate and lifestyle. But in this era of uber-professionalism and lucrative player contracts, that doesn’t wash either. Liverpool isn’t the most glamorous place in the United Kingdom – Beatles birthplace aside – but is home to arguably the greatest football club in the world, a five-time champion of Europe and this year’s Premier League winner. Liverpool has never had any trouble attracting the best players

LITTLE TO CROW ABOUT: Adelaide has underachieved in its 30 years in the AFL and has struggled in 2020. AFLW star Erin Phillips (inset) has surpassed her male counterparts as the Crows’ leading identity.

Player retention has long been an issue

in the world to move to an otherwise cold and grey city. It’s the same in the United States. Green Bay, a city of 105,000 people in a country of 328 million and where it snows for roughly six months a year, is nobody’s idea of a bustling metropolis, yet it is home to the Packers, the greatest team in the history of American football, and which continues to be a destination club to this day. Lambeau Field is the most iconic venue in the game. Adelaide isn’t even West Coast, which used its first mover advantage in football-crazy WA to become one of the most powerful institutions in the state. Yet for all that, there remains a path to greatness for Adelaide. Get the right people in place in all the key positions and the Crows can yet become one of the premier clubs in Australia. They’ve made the right start with new coach Matthew Nicks, who is made of the right stuff for what will be a long climb back. They’re likely going to make further changes at the top in the next little while. Get them right and they could, dare we say it, make Adelaide great again.

#1 PRESSURE PLAYER

HUGH GREENWOOD SYDNEY SWANS v GOLD COAST SUNS

SCG, Sydney July 18, 2020

considered one of the recruits of the year. The signing of the former Crow has been a masterstroke by the Gold Coast Suns, given his ability to win the ball at the stoppage while setting the standard with his tackling. In last weekend’s 32-point victory over the Sydney Swans, the 28-year-old was colossal in both the attacking and defensive facets of the game. He amassed a team-high 23 disposals, had a game-high nine clearances (including four centre clearances), provided an equal team-high five inside 50s and had six score involvements. But as we have come to expect from Greenwood, the other side of his game was in full flight. According to Champion Data, he racked up 82.8 pressure points thanks to his 31 pressure acts and 12 tackles, and he sits well clear on top of the competition’s tackle count with a massive 62 at an average of just under nine a game. Only one player had more pressure points in round seven and that was Richmond’s Jack Graham. The premiership Tiger laid nine tackles and had 31 pressure acts for an impressive 83.7 pressure points. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75).

Demon ruckman Max Gawn be at Hawthorn? The surname Gawn is a form of Gavin and is most probably of Welsh origin. In the Welsh version of the King Arthur legend, the name is Gwalchmai, “hawk of the plain”, or, as suggested by one authority, Gwalchgwyn, “white hawk”. Either way, Max is a Hawk. He is the only Gawn to play at senior level, but there have been two instances of Gavin – North Melbourne’s Barry Gavin (1965-66), later Hawthorn’s physiotherapist; and Hugh Gavin (1897-1902), Essendon defender, dual-premiership player, and winner of the Champion of the Colony award.

I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of legendary coach John Kennedy. I have worked out that he and his grandson Josh, a co-captain of the Swans, have played more than 400 career games as a pair. Which grandfather-grandson combination holds the record for the most appearances on the field? CH: Charlie Pannam snr first represented Collingwood in 1894, three years before the VFL started. After 50 VFA matches, he appeared in 179 League matches for the Magpies until the end of 1907. He then joined Richmond for one final season as a player. Thirty-four years later, one of his grandsons, the iconic Lou Richards, played the first of his 15 seasons wearing the black and white vertical stripes. In 1947, Lou’s brother Ron made his debut for the Magpies. He enjoyed a distinguished 10-season career. Both were members of the 1953 premiership team. The three-man combination accumulated the amazing tallies of 586 VFL and 50 VFA appearances. To enhance their collective careers, they also scored 670 goals. Perhaps their record will be surpassed during the 2030s. Ron’s grandson Ed Richards is establishing himself as a very good performer for the Western Bulldogs. If he can break Brent Harvey’s AFL record of 432 games, there would be a slight chance for Ed and Ron to advance to the top of the grandfather-grandson list. Lou would have enjoyed telling everyone about his family’s magnificent contribution to Australian Football.

u It’s not a season where

we can plan ahead too far due to the nature of the fixture, but from what we’ve learned after the first few rounds, we can make some calls based on which teams are the easiest and hardest to score against. The Adelaide Crows are by far the easiest team to play against. They are giving up an average of 1393 points a game, 89 more than the next easiest, Hawthorn. Port Adelaide, Geelong and Brisbane Lions are the toughest teams to score against. Opposition midfielders have taken hold of the Crows this year. The top three scorers against Adelaide’s midfield have averaged almost 100 points, an amazing return in shortened quarters.

Making your gun midfielder captain when playing against the Crows is a good tactic. GWS and Port Adelaide are the most restrictive sides for mids. The Giants boast the game’s No. 1 tagger in Matt de Boer, who helps keep the big scores down in the engine room of opposition teams. No. 1 rucks find it easy against Richmond, averaging 86, followed by St Kilda (87), Essendon (82) and GWS (84). On the flipside, the key big men find it hard against Collingwood (57) and Port Adelaide (56). Defenders enjoy playing against Collingwood and Richmond, while the Geelong forward line makes it hard for their opponents in the back six. Forwards seem to have better days when playing against Adelaide, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

The Blues’ ruck recruit started in a blaze of glory for his owners and certainly stepped up in a time of need. Unfortunately for those who are still rolling with ‘Mr Worldwide’, his score of 30 confirmed it is time to pack his bags.

BRISBANE LIONS DEFENDER

That was the third 30 on the trot for the Lions’ cash cow and every week that passes makes his round two score of 79 a distant memory. His break-even is now more than his projected score, so it’s time to trade.

GARY ABLETT

CARLTON DEFENDER

GEELONG FORWARD

Opposition teams are understandably putting some work into the Blues co-captain to curb his influence on games and his recent scores are reflecting that. He was well held against the Power with just four marks and 61.

The Cats legend has just been rolling the legs over from a Fantasy perspective this year, playing almost exclusively forward while averaging 61. He has left the hub for the foreseeable future, so he must be traded.

Three trades are available to use or lose for every round for the rest of the season. First, I will be making sure my bench is solid with the upcoming condensed fixtures.

Monitor the roles of players when analysing prospective trade targets. Finding players who are increasing their time on ground and centre bounce attendances is key.

Matt de Boer held Lachie Neale, the competition’s highest Fantasy scorer, to 73, so you should avoid making someone who may cop his tag captain.

HEAR NO EVIL: Headphones would drown out the influence of the crowd.

How to silence the home fans

ow that supporters are allowed back into grounds, questions are already being raised concerning the roar of fans influencing umpires, even in reduced capacity stadiums. For the sake of that much-used phrase, the integrity of the game, it is time to do something about it. The answer is of course for the umpires to wear noise-cancelling headphones. It may seem obvious, but that is the beauty of simple ideas. Only trials will tell, but I suspect that while earbuds may look better, they will probably fall out or be affected by rain, so aesthetically

pleasing external headphones are the way to go, at least initially. I do not suggest they should block sound out completely as it is easy to forget that umpires are human and would not want to operate in a vacuum (or in a bubble as we now say). In fact, at times of stress, such as bouncing the ball or deciding how to divide the Brownlow votes among the midfielders, soothing classical music or anything by

Headphones are the way to go

The Seekers could be played to the men and women in fluro. Also, they would want to continue the humorous banter with the players. It is possible for software to be developed that would allow a voice to be heard when a keyword sentence is received by the headset. For example, the player would say, “Excuse me sir” which would trigger it, and he could continue with, “Did you measure my prior opportunity by the beats of a humming bird’s wings?”, or other similar comments. This technology would not block out the sound of the siren, and it would also react immediately thousands of voices roared “BALL!” by playing Live in a World of our Own, drowning out any thoughts of a doubtful whistle blow in front of irate club members. Although it appears to have no downside, I appreciate that with AFL officials busy moving teams around their giant table map of Australia, it will probably, for the time being, fall on deaf ears.
