eading into rounds seven and eight, St Kilda remained one of the great unknowns of the season. Built and engineered to win at Marvel Stadium, the Saints relocated to Queensland and in their first game up north, led lowly Fremantle by 37 points in the second term, only to somehow lose by a goal. As former Hawthorn champion Jarryd Roughead, now a football operations assistant with St Kilda, told Fox Footy’s AFL 360 after he watched his new club throw that game away, “I’m learning what it’s like to be a Saints fan.” A fortnight later, St Kilda fans old and new are delighted with how well things are progressing. Two wins in five days have the Saints in the top four and looking good things to make the finals for the first time since 2011. And not just any old wins. Both took place within five days of each other at Adelaide Oval. On both occasions, the Saints made the long trip from their Sunshine Coast base to Adelaide on the day of the game. And their history at both the venue and against the South Australian clubs was wretched. Before this year, they were 0-10 at Adelaide Oval since it became

an AFL venue, while they had lost their previous 10 to the Crows and their past eight against the Power. Little wonder the lid was off late Saturday night as St Kilda fans celebrated a great few days. The Saints started the clash with the winless Crows as firm favourites, but ladder-leading Port Adelaide was strongly tipped to win in its first game in front of home fans for the year. It was an absorbing contest and having reduced the margin to a point at the final change, and on their home deck and with St Kilda backing up after a short week, the Power were favoured to close it out.

After this week’s edition hits newsstands, Coles and Coles Express outlets in Victoria and on sale at games in Perth and Adelaide, there will be a combined round 10-11 edition. It will be on sale next Monday for the start of round 10 and will be your companion

There will be some missing detail in terms of scores and stats, but all the regular features will be available. As of this week, there is another addition to the Record with the introduction of ‘Hub

Leading umpire Matt Stevic provides a fascinating insight as he explains how he and the umpiring fraternity have had their lives changed dramatically. AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 5

ONE WEEK at a TIME SEASON OVER?: The Saints’ only downer at the moment is the injury to classy Dan Hannebery.
St Kilda’s speed across the ground has been a feature all season
But the super-fit Saints, who did brag over summer about being the fittest team in the competition, stormed home with the last five goals to win by 29 points and the 12.1 (73) to 6.8 (44) scoreline was remarkable and historic. St Kilda’s 92.3 per cent scoring accuracy was the highest by any winning team in history, while they were also just the third team and the first in 120 years to win a game while kicking just one behind for the entire match. St Kilda’s speed across the ground has been a feature all
season, even if the poster boy for the run-and-gun game-plan, Bradley Hill, has had a quiet few weeks. The piece of the puzzle the Saints are still trying to establish is how many big men they can carry. Tim Membrey and Max King are the key forwards, while Rowan Marshall’s standing as one of the best ruckmen in the competition continues to grow and he was among the best last Saturday night. But what to do with Paddy Ryder has become a selection conundrum for the Saints.
Whether he is in Brett Ratten’s best 22 remains unclear, but he earned his keep with two goals and some sublime ruckwork against his former club. Ordinarily, Ryder could book his place in the side for the next few weeks, but at 32 and with the Saints facing four games in 17 days as part of the compressed schedule, Ratten might ask him to skip a match or two. Sydney, Gold Coast, Geelong and Essendon are St Kilda’s next four opponents, and there’s every chance the Saints can all but lock up a finals berth if they can beat at least three of them. The only downer is that veteran midfielder Dan Hannebery, brought to the club at the start of last season because of his finals experience, could miss the rest of the year because of lingering hamstring injuries. He has played just 10 of a possible 30 games since crossing to Moorabbin.

NAB AFL Rising Star NOAH ANDERSON GOLD COAST SUNS
T
his year’s NAB AFL Rising Star Award is fast moonlighting as Gold Coast’s best first-year player award. Smart outside midfielder Noah Anderson became the Suns’ fourth Rising Star nominee for the season after his slashing performance in the win over Sydney at the SCG in round seven. He had 15 disposals, seven score involvements, five marks and a goal. The highlight was a hardrunning goal in the first quarter, where he sprinted more than 100m to finish an end-to-end Suns move. The former Oakleigh Charger was the second selection at last year’s NAB AFL Draft and was pretty much selected as a bundle with best mate Matt Rowell, who was taken at No. 1. The hard-running and aerobic power is clearly in his genes. His similarly-athletic father Dean played 150 games for Hawthorn and St Kilda between 1988 and 1996, but not enough for either club to warrant Noah qualifying as a father-son selection.

Ominous warning as Eagles take flight
E
ASHLEY BROWNE
ven in a condensed 17-game season, there is still enough time over the course of the year for every team to experience peaks and troughs. West Coast might be the smartest team of all in 2020 by getting its form slump over with nice and early. Those first two weeks in Queensland, when the Eagles were unhappy campers and lost to Gold Coast, Brisbane and Port Adelaide, now go. Since then they’ve beaten Adelaide and Sydney and, after returning to Perth, Fremantle and Collingwood. Last Sunday’s 66-point thrashing of the Magpies at Optus Stadium was clearly the pick of the bunch. In two hours of footy, the Eagles jumped from 10th to fourth on the ladder and their percentage improved from 100.48 to 114.85. Not surprisingly, they are now outright favourites to win the premiership.
8 AFL RECORD
And why wouldn’t they be? Admittedly, Collingwood was weakened, with skipper Scott Pendlebury’s last-minute injury withdrawal adding to a deep absentee list that included Jeremy Howe, Steele Sidebottom and Jordan De Goey. But before allowing West Coast to kick an eye-popping 18.3 last Sunday, the Pies had conceded only 10 goals in two of their seven matches. All up, they were averaging just seven goals kicked against them. “We played our Washington Generals role really well today to the West Coast Globetrotters,” Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley wryly observed afterwards. The Magpies kicked four of the first five goals before the Eagles kicked 17 of the next 18. It started with brilliant ruckwork from Nic Naitanui, who handed Brodie Grundy a rare beating, and featured a 30-possession game from boom recruit Tim Kelly, who played his best game for the club. The former Cat has been building nicely and has found form at precisely the right time. But it is West Coast’s forwards who really fired. Fresh off celebrating his 250th game with four goals and the Glendinning-Allan Medal for best afield in the Derby clash in round seven, veteran spearhead Josh Kennedy followed up with seven goals against Collingwood. And he had plenty of support.
SPREADING THEIR WINGS: Ruck star Nic Naitanui (top), prized recruit Tim Kelly (above) and promising youngster Oscar Allen (left) were all prominent as the Eagles flexed their muscles against the Magpies.
Oscar Allen’s promising form continued with three goals, while Jake Waterman kicked two. The Eagles will continue to enjoy the comforts of home for the foreseeable future. Next up is Geelong, followed by winnable Optus Stadium meetings with Carlton and Hawthorn, with none of the four- and five-day breaks facing many of those near them on the ladder. And, while the Eagles will likely need to travel again at some stage this season, there is the real prospect of a home Grand Final to consider as well. Their flag favouritism is warranted.

Andrews up with the best, says Hodge
A
ASHLEY BROWNE
lex Rance’s premature retirement at the end of last season opened up the discussion as to who is the best key defender in the AFL. Brisbane’s Harris Andrews is starting to mount a compelling case. He already has a powerful advocate in his corner. Former Lions teammate Luke Hodge, a four-time premiership player at Hawthorn, whose teammates along the journey included Josh Gibson, Brian Lake and Grant Birchall, raved about him recently on SEN. “I would say he’d be close to the best defender I’ve played with,” he told the Whateley program. “For a bloke who is so young but mature, he knows the mix of when to spoil and when to mark. “He’s happy to give feedback to his senior players and his young ones, and he does it in the right manner. “He understands the game. I rate him as high as anyone as far as a younger person coming through and just wanting to know everything about the game.” For Andrews, 23, having Hodge as his mentor/teammate for two seasons, was a bonus. He was only identified as a key defender late in his junior career and much of his training as to how to shut down the best key forwards in the competition came during matches. Hodge helped him complete that education, with honours, and with Rance off the scene last year because of a ruptured ACL, Andrews earned his first All-Australian blazer. Together with Sydney’s Isaac Heeney, Andrews is the poster boy for the controversial northern states’ academies. He came through the Lions Academy and was taken with the 61st pick at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, but initially shaped as a key forward because of his size (201cm), leap and marking ability.
BEST IN THE BUSINESS: Lions star Harris Andrews is pushing his claims as the No. 1 defender in the game.
He kicked 80 goals for his club in his final year of underage footy. But in a recent interview with afl.com.au, Brisbane’s academy and NEAFL operations manager Luke Curran said that, while playing a trial game for the Queensland under-18s in 2014 against a TAC Cup (now NAB League) team, the coaches decided to trial him at the other end of the ground. “He took a heap of marks and he basically won the game for us, so we thought he might be able to play back as well,” Curran said. “But certainly, when he got drafted and in his first pre-season with the Lions, he was training as a forward.” Justin Leppitsch’s three seasons as Brisbane coach won’t be remembered for all that much and, by any reasonable evaluation, most of the problems he faced were not of his making. But identifying Andrews as a key defender might be his greatest legacy. According to Champion Data, Andrews is this year the No. 1
I rate him as high as anyone FOUR-TIME PREMIERSHIP HAWK LUKE HODGE ON HARRIS ANDREWS
player in the competition for spoils and second for intercept possessions (8.0), trailing only Hawthorn’s James Sicily. He is categorised as elite in contested possessions (6.0 a game), intercept possessions (7.9) and spoils (9.8). He has also lost just four of his 34 defensive one-on-ones this season – a loss rate of 11 per cent, which makes him the sixth-ranked of the 37 players to defend at least 15 one-on-ones this season. Little wonder he has become a bedrock at the Lions and is widely considered to be a future captain of the club. All that remains is for Andrews to sign the monster deal that will surely keep him at Brisbane for the rest of his career. His last deal came in 2017 and the COVID-19 freeze on contract talks has delayed fresh negotiations, but Andrews can look forward to a large pay day before too long, with a contract in excess of $750,000 a season in the offing. ormer Richmond midfielder/ forward Shane Tuck, who passed away last week, has been remembered by his former Richmond teammates with love, affection and a few laughs as well. He was one of the toughest Tigers of the modern era and his 173-game career spanned three coaches – Danny Frawley, Terry Wallace and Damien Hardwick. His last game, and only final, was the losing 2013 elimination final against Carlton. Writing in The Age, former Tiger teammate Wayne Campbell said Tuck was beloved at Punt Rd because of his toughness and for coming up the hard way. “Under Terry Wallace, ‘Tucky’ was the epitome of consistency and to have five top-five finishes in the best and fairest from his 10-year career illustrates this brilliantly,” Campbell wrote. Nothing came to Tuck on a silver platter despite his surname. His father Michael played in seven Hawthorn premiership teams and, with 426, played the second most games in League history. Shane was drafted to the Hawks in the 2000 Rookie Draft, never played a game, went to West Adelaide and was given a second chance at AFL level by the Tigers in 2004, and enjoyed a fine career. He was 38 when he passed away, and is survived by wife Kat and children Will and Ava Meanwhile, Geelong is mourning the loss of premiership half-back Geoff Williams, who passed away last week aged 89. Born and raised in Geelong, although recruited from Warragul where he was working in a bank, Williams played in the 1952 premiership team in his first year with the Cats and won the best and fairest the same year. He played 121 games over seven season and won another best and fairest in 1955.

WHAT WAS THE HYPE LIKE OUT WEST WITH THE NEWS THAT WA WAS GETTING ITS OWN TEAM IN THE VFL AND IT WAS FINALLY BECOMING A REALITY? u Exceptionally exciting. At the time we loved footy over here, but it was not quite at the level it was in Victoria at the time as it is now. You guys live and breathe football. Walking down the street in the first couple of years, you’d be more recognised by anybody even in Melbourne as from that terrible team the West Coast than you would be in Perth.

AN EAGLE WHO FLEW UNDER THE RADAR
ROUND ONE, 1987, THE FIRST TIME WE SEE WEST COAST. YOU’RE 33 POINTS DOWN AT THREE-QUARTER TIME AGAINST RICHMOND AT HOME, BUT YOU KICK NINE GOALS IN THE FINAL QUARTER TO WIN BY 14. u Things just fell into place late. We were good on a dry track. I can’t remember what the weather was on that day but we had (Phil) Narkle and some small guys who could cover ground. We had some players who could turn a game or make a bit of a difference. Maybe we just held on a bit better.
In an era when he was surrounded by superstar teammates, former Eagle Dwayne Lamb played his role to perfection and is still admired by fans today. He speaks to SEN’s SAM EDMUND. WE’RE JOINED BY A MAN WHO WAS INDUCTED INTO THE WAFL HALL OF FAME IN 2010 WITH THESE WORDS, “ONLY 11 WEST AUSTRALIANS IN HISTORY HAVE PLAYED MORE SENIOR FOOTBALL, BUT NO ONE EXHIBITED MORE COURAGE OR PLAYED AT A MOST CONSISTENT LEVEL FROM THE START OF HIS CAREER TO THE END.” HE WAS THE FIRST WEST COAST EAGLE TO REACH THE 50, 100 AND 150-GAME MILESTONES, AND DWAYNE LAMB JOINS US NOW. WELCOME DWAYNE. u Cheers. Good to get on board and have a bit of a chat. GROWING UP IN NORTH INNALOO, WHAT SORT OF YOUNG FOOTBALLER WERE YOU? u I suppose I was consistent as a half-back flanker. I didn’t win the fairest and best, didn’t make the combined sides, but I was probably just a worker and the coaches like that type of guy. You need a bit of everything, you need a bit of a spark, but that was my cup of tea, so I got invited over to Subiaco. Probably Haydn Bunton gave ground to me when he put me a kick behind the play at Subi with Peter Featherby forward of the play, so we found the niche and went from there. Kicked off my career at Subi, did very well, and then pushed on to the Eagles.
12 AFL RECORD
Xxxxx xxxx XXXXXXXX XXXXX
YOU FIND YOURSELF AT SUBIACO IN 1980. WHERE WAS THE CLUB AT WHEN YOU ARRIVED? u It was just hanging around, not doing much at all, quite frankly. I think I debuted in 1978. I got to the club quite young, played a few Colts games and played quite a few ressies, and then an opportunity came up. But I reckon for my first couple of years we only won one game for the season. I THINK YOU HAD THE ONE WIN IN 1982, FOUR WINS IN 1983 AND THE FLAG IN 1986 MUST HAVE BEEN ENORMOUSLY SATISFYING. ON GRAND FINAL DAY YOU WERE NAMED SECOND BEST ON GROUND AND KICKED A COUPLE OF GOALS AS WELL. WHAT A FEELING THAT MUST HAVE BEEN. u It was an interesting day, that one. I’d probably ended up kicking a few goals in my career, but it wasn’t my noted ability and I think I kicked two of the first three on the day. And the boys said, “If ‘Fatty’s’ kicking a goal, then it’s all over – we’ve got this wrapped up”.
MR CONSISTENT: As well as playing a key role in West Coast’s inaugural premiership, Dwayne Lamb was the first Eagle to the 50, 100 and 150-game milestones for the club.
IN THE INAUGURAL SEASON, RON ALEXANDER WAS THE COACH. WHAT SORT OF STYLE DO YOU REMEMBER HIM TRYING TO IMPART? u Ron played a lot of footy as a captain-coach, so he was very close to the players and that was the way he went. He was a real players’ coach and I thought he was hard done by. We won 11 in that first season and just missed out on finals, so he was a bit unlucky and out he went. The players were a bit disappointed and in came John Todd and the next chapter. HE (TODD) TOOK YOU TO THAT FIRST FINAL IN 1988 BUT THEN HE’S GONE, SO YOU’VE HAD TWO COACHES IN THREE SEASONS. u I think the expectations over here, maybe the supporters were a bit impatient. A lot of clubs hadn’t had a premiership for a long, long time and our guys were quite driven. We had some businessmen associated who had strong expectations and they wanted good results. Not that we were doing poorly by any means, but I think they were looking for that bit of Victoria to come across here. Mick (Malthouse) got the nod and I thought he brought some wonderful stuff to the club. YOU LOSE THE 1991 GRAND FINAL AND THE NEXT YEAR IT’S GEELONG AT THE MCG. YOU SEEMED MUCH

BETTER PREPARED AND PETER MATERA GOES OUT AND KICKS FIVE GOALS FROM A WING. DID YOU PLAY WITH A MORE SKILFUL FOOTBALLER IN YOUR TIME? u When you think he was playing on Mark Bairstow, who was obviously a West Australian, and went to Geelong and was an exceptional player there himself, to kick five on him on a wing is incredible. Through COVID we’ve had a few replays on the TV to fill the void of football games, and I probably haven’t watched 1992 that often because of the business of life, but I probably had a solid game. Had one little chase down of Robert Scott, which Mick talked up, but other than that I had a solid game. But if I was Pete Matera and I kicked five goals off the wing I reckon I would have worn out my video copy of the game. He was pretty good. It was a wonderful day but by the same token we were playing a pretty good side. Geelong were no slouches through that era, same as Hawthorn, with Gary Ablett, Billy Brownless and (Paul) Couch, Bairstow and (Andrew) Bews in the midfield – they were very talented players and great blokes too. We had many a beer with them. YOU MANAGED ONLY THE FOUR GAMES IN 1994. HOW CHALLENGING WAS 1994 BECAUSE
THE TEAM GOES ON TO WIN A SECOND FLAG THAT YOU HAVE TO WATCH? u Yes, but mind you I was in my 34th year and nowadays I’ve seen that guys can go longer, but back then there wasn’t a lot who played deep into their 30s, particularly with Mick. We had a wealth of ability and players, and Drew Banfield came along who was probably a similar fit to what I was and he was probably champing at the bit to get his opportunity. WHAT RELATIONSHIPS DO YOU HAVE WITH WEST COAST NOW? u I’ve got a very strong relationship. Being a very young club, they have always encouraged the life members and past players groups to stay involved. My daughter works at West Coast in the finance area, so she works match-day and she’s nearby. All the younger kids, I’ve got a 14-year-old still running around and playing and he loves to get along. The club’s been very good from that point of view, and any sort of functions we always get an invite to those things. I’m back at grassroots with Subi footy club. I’m on the board there and we’ve had a wonderful run over the last 20 years. We were bad back in the early days, but we’ve won every second Grand Final for the past 15 or 20 years.

o here’s my 2020 in a nutshell. March 21: I umpire my first game of the season, Essendon versus Fremantle at Marvel Stadium. March 23: Millie and I have our first baby, our beautiful Hazel. On the same day, the AFL season is shut down. July 6: We become temporary Queensland residents who for now are living in Broadbeach. We relocated at the start of the month with about three days to prepare. It’s amazing how you can relocate seemingly half your house when you need to, but we’re settled into a two-bedroom apartment, we can prepare our own meals and lead a relatively normal life. We train regularly and have our reviews and meetings as normal every Tuesday and Thursday. Having the pool, gym and the beach nearby for recovery sessions has been a bonus. And being up here means we are close to family. Millie’s twin sister and partner live in Brisbane and my father and stepmother are on the Sunshine Coast, so this has been their first chance to meet Hazel. And some of the other umpires are here with their partners, who also have young children, so they’ve been a great support network as well.
14 AFL RECORD
We couldn’t have made it here without the incredible support and collaboration between the AFLUA and the AFL. Led by Brett Rosebury (president) and Rob Kerr (CEO), they have worked tirelessly with the AFL umpiring team to ensure all umpiring needs have been met in order to continue servicing the game. For Hayden Kennedy and Damien Farrow from the AFL umpiring department, who have moved up here with all of us, nothing has been too much trouble. It has been a whirlwind few months for everyone in footy and for many of us in the umpiring ranks it has been more complicated. Many umpires have given up an awful lot, taking a large chunk of unpaid leave from their other jobs to relocate interstate to play their part in keeping the game going. Some have left their families behind in Melbourne. Others are working remotely to the best of their ability. Every umpire nationally has put their hand up to be available and I’m immensely proud of our team. We play a small, but significant role in the game and it’s important we understand our place, which is obviously to service the game in the most professional and consistent way we can. Despite the challenges, we are lucky because there are many
It has been a whirlwind few months for everyone in footy
people in the game and, of course outside, who have lost their jobs and we don’t lose sight of that fact. The most common question I get asked is what umpiring is like with no crowds? You become conditioned to that ferocious cauldron with 70,000 people and you learn to shield yourself from that, so when the stands are empty you notice how peaceful it is. Having said that, it’s great to have crowds at the Gabba and Metricon Stadium again and to have some noise and passion back. Between games it’s all about learning how to become a good father and to really embrace the time with my family. Of course we miss our families back home and our thoughts are with all Victorians during these incredibly challenging times. Let’s hope we can get back to the home of footy soon, fill the stands and return to normal life. There is nothing more exhilarating than a packed MCG watching or officiating the greatest game in the world. Matt Stevic has taken part in seven Grand Finals and has been named the All-Australian umpire six times.

u After four games last
season, Will Snelling has cemented his place in the Essendon side in 2020. The 22-year-old has endeared himself to Bombers fans with his desire to play his role as a hard-tackling small forward who constantly cracks in and applies pressure at every opportunity. Last Sunday in the narrow win over the Crows at Adelaide Oval, the 2019 mid-season recruit produced arguably the best performance of his 12-game career (which includes one for Port Adelaide back in 2016). Snelling had 18 possessions, including 14 handballs, and three inside 50s, but it was his pressure game which was off the charts. According to Champion Data’s numbers, Snelling amassed an enormous 91.4 pressure points thanks to 33 pressure acts and a game-high 11 tackles. It is displays like this that will see the former star SANFL midfielder further enhance his credentials in an Essendon side that relies on pressure around the contest. The next best pressure player in round eight was Brisbane’s Jarrod Berry with 71.3 points from 26 pressure acts and six tackles. The Lions take on the Dons in round nine. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and 16 physical pressure (3.75).

Kennedy has been well represented in AFL history, with 34 instances. There are four Kennedys on 2020 AFL lists: Matthew at Carlton, Adam at the GWS Giants and the Joshs at Sydney and West Coast. There is more than one derivation advanced for the meaning of this popular surname. The first part of the name (kenn-) comes from the Gaelic ceann which could mean either “chief”/“leader” – most fitting for Sydney Swans skipper Josh Kennedy – or “head”. The second part of the name (-edy) derives from eide variously rendered as “helmeted” or “grim”. If the latter, then Kennedy could be seen as an equivalent name to Roughead.

ALL TIED UP: Richmond and Collingwood had just 22 scoring shots between them in the low-scoring round two draw at the MCG.
GP: Incredibly, it is the equal second lowest after Carlton and Melbourne had 21 shots to reach 28 points each back in 1898, in what was the lowest-scoring draw. The Collingwood and Richmond match was also the lowest score for a draw at the MCG, easily beating Melbourne and Fitzroy’s totals of 6.8 (44) in 1961, from 28 shots. Draws are not rare but are unpredictable in frequency. Since 1990, there have been three in some seasons, and none in others (the most recent being 2019). The Giants played in two in a row in 2017. Although most of the low draws occurred around the turn of the 19th century after the formation of the VFL, Footscray and Sydney slid into equal third place as recently as 1991. The Bulldogs levelled the scores at 35 apiece with a behind from the last kick on a sodden Whitten Oval in a match in which every step produced a splash. With a number of teams already this season scoring four goals or less in shorter quarters, another low draw is a possibility.

MIDFIELDER The Eagles ball magnet looks to have put a quiet patch behind him after racking up 26 possessions and 11 marks against the Pies for 126. He loves playing at home and played a whopping 95 per cent game-time.
u It is like nothing we have
experienced in AFL Fantasy – 33 games in 20 days with a new round starting the day after the previous round has finished. Fantasy coaches will need to be on the ball to maintain their team over this challenging period. In Fantasy Classic, three trades will be available every round for the remainder of the season. As teams will be announced at 6.20pm AEST on the day before matches, holding on to trades during the round has some merit due to the potential of more changes than usual. Clubs may look to rest players – including our Fantasy stars – in the condensed fixture. Having an active bench is important. Whether you trade
out a player or move a bench player on-field for a non-player will help coaches field 22 players each round. There are two bye rounds scheduled in this block with four teams on a bye in round 10 (Blues, Dockers, Hawks, Eagles) and two in round 11 (Giants, Swans). If your player is on a bye, rather than trading them out, you will be awarded their season average for the round. They must have played in the previous round to register a score. This decision helps Fantasy Draft coaches who would have been left with zeros and potentially a loss in their league match-up. There will be plenty to think about in what will be an exciting festival of Fantasy footy.
KEY FANTASY INFORMATION: ROUNDS 9-12 • Averages awarded to players on a bye in round 10 and 11 • Rolling lockout • Three trades available in Fantasy Classic • Restricted free agents (RFA) times will be adjusted so they are cleared before the next round starts in Fantasy Draft

While the temptation will be there to continue downgrading and upgrading, I will be holding some rookies who have made their cash purely for their job security over these next few weeks.
Being across injury news and clubs’ plans to manage players is paramount. While every club will be different, we may see some resting from the Pies who will play four games across three states in 13 days.
With a rolling lockout, there are multiple chances to take advantage of the vice-captain loophole. Look at the first two-three fixtures and pick your best option for VC. They don’t need to be from the first game.

However, with Dangerfield and Selwood permanent fixtures in Chris Scott’s engine room for a while yet, Constable will find it hard to turn down interest for the second consecutive season given his solid form at VFL and practice match level.

Bombers v Lions AT ARM’S LENGTH: The potential clash between speedsters Adam Saad and Charlie Cameron will be a highlight.
ROUND
9
HEAD to HEAD
Played 46: Essendon 27, Brisbane Lions 18, draws 1. Since 2016: Essendon 3, Brisbane Lions 2. Most recent game: round 4, 2019, Essendon d Brisbane Lions by 47 points at the MCG. Highest attendance: 91,482, Grand Final, 2001, at the MCG.
ESSENDON
to you by Match Preview Brought u It’s still hard to work out exactly where Essendon fits into the scheme of things in 2020. Five wins, but Collingwood is the only scalp of note and the Bombers laboured to victory over winless Adelaide last Sunday. They suffered more injuries as well with forward Jayden Laverde facing time on the sidelines and there are questions over their goalscoring power. At least Dylan Shiel returns from suspension to add some steel and depth to the midfield. And he’ll be needed against the Lions, whose engine room remains one of the best in the AFL. You wonder how much importance
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan will place on the close shave against Melbourne last Sunday. The Lions missed some chances to put the Demons away and in the end held on to win by three points. But Fagan knows enough from his time at Hawthorn that sometimes you take the wins whichever way they come, don’t sweat over the details and move on to the next game. The five-day break is something of uncharted waters for the Lions, but they look the goods here. ASHLEY BROWNE
Highest score: 29.20 (194), round 9, 1988, at the MCG. Lowest score: 8.13 (61), round 1, 2003, at the Gabba. Home record: 15-8-1. Away record: 12-10. Greatest winning margin: 140 points, round 9, 1988, at the MCG. Longest winning sequence: 10, round 13, 1987, to round 14, 1993. Most goals in a game: 7, Scott Lucas, round 17, 2006, at the Gabba; Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, round 4, 2019, at the MCG.
