EDITOR’S LETTER

or Richmond, the warm and fuzzy feelings will likely return on Friday night as the Tigers head to the Gabba for the first time since last year’s Grand Final win. But the Tigers will be snapped back to reality, and the task ahead, all too quickly when they meet the Brisbane Lions. They remain in the eight after a courageous come-from-behind win over the GWS Giants last week, but they’re in the middle of a fight for a top-four berth that probably won’t be settled until the final weekend of the season. Richmond trailed the plucky Giants by as much as 28 points late in the third term at Marvel Stadium and again needed a heavy dose of magic from Dustin Martin to get back into the game. The Tigers only hit the lead for good with three minutes remaining when the ball bounced the wrong way for Giants defender Lachie Whitfield and Daniel Rioli pounced to kick the match-winner. There was an air of inevitability about it as Richmond came surging

The Tigers will be snapped back to reality

u Without opening too many old wounds in the debate about Tasmania having its own AFL team, maybe it’s time for some short-term strategy and get bigger-drawing clubs to play either Hawthorn or North Melbourne in the Apple Isle. Last Saturday’s clash between the two Tasmanian ‘tenants’ drew just over 9000 fans to University of Tasmania Stadium.

It was the lowest crowd to watch the Hawks and the Kangaroos play in Launceston. They have met eight times there since 2006 and the first two – in 2006 and 2007 – attracted 18,836 and 19,114 fans respectively. Now I get that it was 18th (North) playing 17th (Hawthorn) last week and some, if not all, of the standing room area has been taken away and capacity

home, but again the unpredictable beauty of an oval-shaped bouncing ball was on show. It was a great win for the Tigers considering their lengthy injury list and the difficult start to the week in the aftermath of the nightclub incident the previous weekend involving Rioli and emerging star Shai Bolton, who broke his wrist during the fracas and will miss a month. That Rioli put Richmond ahead for good only added to the spectacle of what was one of the best games of the season and the comeback spoke volumes of the club’s culture and character. But there is a stern test awaiting the Tigers on Friday night. The Lions have won five successive games, putting their has been reduced due to COVID, but it’s still a concern. Trivia question: between them, how many games have the big four Melbourne clubs – Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond – played at UTAS Stadium? The answer is three. The Blues played there in 2016 and 2019 and the Tigers in 2006. Collingwood and Essendon are also yet to play in Hobart

at Blundstone Arena, while Richmond (twice) and Carlton (once) have made fleeting appearances. Yes, it’s only a short-term fix and there are deeper issues impacting the game in Tasmania. But starting next season, let’s fixture one of the big Melbourne ‘four’ in Launceston and Hobart and get the turnstiles clicking again. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME early season fixturing issues behind them. And while Gold Coast offered minimal resistance after quarter-time, Brisbane demonstrated its immense capacity to keep the scoreboard ticking over. If two or three of Joe Daniher, Eric Hipwood, Daniel McStay, Charlie Cameron, Lincoln McCarthy and Zac Bailey get among the goals, then the Lions will be in every game. If they all do, as was the case last week at Metricon Stadium, then look out. Brisbane will be buoyed further knowing it beat a far stronger Tiger outfit than this one in the qualifying final last year, its first win against Richmond in 15 attempts. In terms of ladder position and self-belief, Brisbane will be desperate to beat the Tigers again. The most heart-warming result of the week? That would be North Melbourne, which won its first game of the season and earned David Noble his first win as an AFL coach after coming from five

AT LAST: The Roos had something to smile about after coming from five goals down to claim their first win of the season against the Hawks.

goals down to beat Hawthorn at UTAS Stadium by seven points. It came on the back of some outstanding work from midfielders Ben Cunnington and Jy Simpkin, as well as dangerous forward Cameron Zurhaar. There is a long road ahead for the Roos, but the win was richly deserved and, who knows, it might yet be the Hawks and not North Melbourne which finishes the season on the bottom. This is the second straight season Hawthorn has gone down to a team that had lost its previous 16 matches, which

raises serious questions about what has happened to that club’s famous mental toughness. The grittiest win of the weekend was the Western Bulldogs going to Adelaide Oval and knocking over Port Adelaide by 19 points on the back of powerful performances from Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore and Aaron Naughton. The Bulldogs are on track for a monster Friday night showdown against Melbourne in round 11. The Power, meanwhile, might not be quite the team we thought they were.

NAB AFL Rising Star TOM GREEN GWS GIANTS

T

om Green earned the second NAB AFL Rising Star nomination of his career after a fine performance for the GWS Giants against Richmond last Saturday night. Green gathered 24 possessions (10 contested) in the shattering four-point loss to Richmond, a game the Giants led by nearly five goals late in the third term. He also kicked a goal and had five score involvements. Green earned last year’s nomination with 18 disposals and seven clearances against Collingwood in round four, but with just six games to his name in what was nevertheless an impressive debut season, he remains eligible for the award. The powerful midfielder was a member of the Giants Academy before being drafted to the club with the 10th selection in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft. He is the grandson of Michael Green, a four-time Richmond premiership ruckman. ASHLEY BROWNE

AFLW SET TO EXPAND

ROUND 10 MILESTONES BOLD NEW PLANS: The next AFLW season will begin in December; (inset) AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan; (below) Essendon will be one of four new teams in 2022-23.

B

NIC NEGREPONTIS

y the end of 2023, the AFLW competition will have 18 teams. The AFL has confirmed Port Adelaide, Sydney, Essendon and Hawthorn will finally be granted licences, with the details to be worked out. The 2021-22 AFLW season will start in December this year, meaning there will no longer be a clash with the men’s season. The first expansion will be in 2022-23, with the four clubs given the opportunity to push their case for early entry. The AFL has asked the Power, Swans, Bombers and Hawks to submit their applications for entry in season seven by July 9. AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said last week: “Broadly, it’s a list-build strategy, a whole-club look at how the program will be integrated into the club. “The facilities are incredibly important; business model, corporate support, consumer support, the business case … they’re going to build out around it.” This was done to give the clubs some flexibility, with Hawthorn and Essendon expected to hit the ground running in season seven, while Sydney may need the extra year to establish itself. McLachlan added that while this rapid expansion, from eight to 18 in potentially seven seasons, is a lot for the AFLW to absorb, he wants fans to view the competition 10 years from now. These changes remain in their infancy. We don’t know how long the season will be once there are 18 teams, we don’t know whether the season will be pushed even further forward to accommodate that and we don’t know how the additional four teams will affect the talent pool. The League’s Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to

TRAIN WITH THE ELITE H

TIPS FROM THE BEST: Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell is joined by fellow stars of the game, including AFLW champion Erin Phillips (below), in a new app for players of all ages.

ASHLEY BROWNE

awthorn’s 2018 Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell is the brains behind a new app that aims to give footballers across the country, at every level, an extra wrinkle and a new dimension to their game. Ball Magnets hit the app stores last month following more than 12 months of planning after Mitchell watched as football ground to a halt last year because of the COVID-19. “Players around the country weren’t able to train properly or to play footy, so I was keen to come up with a concept to create a platform where they could train online with drills that we provide and drills that we do on a weekly basis,” he said. Joining Mitchell as partners in the venture are Carlton co-captain Patrick Cripps, 2020 Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale from Brisbane, emerging Gold Coast star Matt Rowell and Adelaide AFLW superstar Erin Phillips. The online sessions usually last 15 to 20 minutes and are designed as extra sessions for players to take part in on top of their usual club commitments.

We are genuine in demonstrating what we do and the tricks of the trade HAWTHORN STAR TOM MITCHELL

They are skill and fitness-based and can be done solo, in pairs or in small groups for players of all ages and abilities. “We are pretty passionate about giving back to the game and helping stars of the future and we came up with the app because technology is such a big thing in our lives and it gets people outside together with their friends or family,” Mitchell said. Other AFL players including Jack Viney, Toby Greene, Josh Dunkley, Adam Treloar, Taylor Adams and Jaeger O’Meara will also feature on the app. “We are pretty genuine in demonstrating what we do and the tricks of the trade, whereas previously, players had been a bit reluctant to demonstrate what they know about positioning and stoppage work and things like that because that’s what makes them good,” Mitchell said.

Ball Magnets, which will also have a large pre-season training component, costs $120 a year. It is available through the Apple Store and Google Play with a seven-day free trial.

LOVE 0 1 2021 WE THINGS

Winter is coming and football becomes just that little bit harder and perhaps a touch less joyous. But before it does, ASHLEY BROWNE ticks off what he has loved in 2021.

IN

THE AFRICAN CONNECTION

u If you didn’t well up just a

bit when watching the video of Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge embracing Buku Khamis after informing him of his impending debut before round eight then you have a heart of flint. The 21-year-old, who was born in South Sudan, is the latest in an increasingly impressive group of players from the African continent who, with their families, endured significant hardship just to make it to Australia. That they made it through to the AFL is even more remarkable. Changkuoth Jiath has been a revelation in an otherwise bleak season for the Hawks with his intercept marking and darting run from defence. Twin brothers Michael and Martin Frederick are making their way towards regular senior football with Fremantle and Port Adelaide respectively, while Aliir Aliir, the elder statesman of the group, is still counting his luck moving to Port Adelaide from Sydney and becoming a key defensive cog for one of the flag favourites.

AFRICAN CONNECTION: (Top from left) Buku Khamis, Changkuoth Jiath, Michael Frederick and Aliir Aliir have all overcome hardship to make their mark in the AFL, while Sam Walsh (left) has gone from good to great.

SAM WALSH

u The 2018 No.1 draft pick has

elevated himself from good to great this season and, through the first nine weeks of 2021, Champion Data has him rated as elite for

disposals (30.0), uncontested possessions (19.7), marks (5.8) and score involvements (7.2).
The draft class of 2018 is shaping as one of the best in many years, with Max King, Ben King, Bailey Smith, Connor Rozee, Zak Butters, Izak Rankine and Jack Lukosius all on the verge of stardom. Which one is dux is discussion for another time, but what cannot be overstated is how important Walsh has become to Carlton’s midfield and that he is now the club’s best player. The Blues had hoped the Walsh-Patrick Cripps combination would be the best one-two midfield punch in the competition, but Cripps is struggling. Walsh is flying, but he could do with some help.

from intercepts, which is No. 1 in the competition. Any team that made boom recruit Ben Brown wait until round seven to debut is going OK. We’ve all had our fun with Melbourne over the years with the ski holiday references and the “Well played, No. 5!” jibes, but this team is seriously talented and playing with an edge. Come late September, the jokes might be on us.

FANS AT THE FOOTY

u Take your pick. The hum and

SHAI BOLTON

u Such a shame that the Bolton

show has been put on hold for a time because he has become one of the most dazzling players in the competition. Despite three flags in four years, there is the need for some generational change at Tigerland, especially through the midfield, and Bolton, who is elite for contested possessions (10.1), clearances (4.8) and goals (1.3) and above average for disposals, metres gained, score assists and score involvements, has provided the X-factor in 2021. He’s also a human highlights reel and, while his sky-high grab against Geelong inexplicably wasn’t named mark of the week (thanks Collingwood fans/trolls), it will take a special effort from here to beat it for mark of the year. The Tigers and Bolton are negotiating a new contract and, while he is odds-on to remain at Punt Rd, the club will have to dig deep to make it so.

MELBOURNE

u Unbeaten through nine

games, Melbourne fans have every reason to be giddy with excitement, with that first flag since 1964 a distinct possibility. Melbourne is ticking all the right boxes for a team in premiership contention. There is speed, skill and hardness across every line. The Demons are so hard to score against, and they kill you on the turnover, outscoring their opposition by 23 points a game

EXCITING TIMES: Shai Bolton (above) has provided a new X-factor for the Tigers; the fans have returned, with 78,000 attending the Anzac Day clash (below); while the undefeated Demons (bottom) have long-suffering supporters dreaming of their first flag since 1964.

excitement up and down Swan St, in the heart of Tigertown, ahead of Richmond’s season-opener and dual premiership flag unfurling back in March. It might be the masses of teal, black and white clad Port Adelaide fans chanting Never Tear Us Apart in the final seconds before games at Adelaide Oval. For many, the magic of going to the footy was back on Anzac Day when 78,000 fans stood still in absolute silence at the MCG then roared their lungs out at the opening bounce of the Collingwood-Essendon game. After a year of negligible and, in many cases, zero crowds at the footy in 2020, fans are back and while numbers are still below pre-COVID levels – significantly in some cases – the game has found its soul again.

THE STAND RULE

u To steal a line from Brownlow

medallist, commentator and influencer Gerard Healy, the Sherrin has been freed and, as a spectacle, the game is as attractive as it has been for about a decade. Through nine rounds in 2021, there have been 40 scores of 100 points or more, compared with 32 in 2019, the last comparable season. More goals make everyone happy – fans, the AFL and especially the broadcasters who can sell more ads. By simply commanding the player standing on the mark to do just that – stand – the ball keeps moving, sometimes at frenetic place. The playmaker is the player with the ball, not the one standing the mark. Running half-backs who can use the ball and make smart decisions are at a premium, as are small forwards who can expertly creep closer to goal. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  11

AFL RECORD 10 THINGS WE LOVE IN 2021

JOE DANIHER

u Footy is heaps better when

Daniher is running around, and not watching forlornly from the stands. Granted, for the romantics it is not in an Essendon jumper, but after just 15 games in three injury-riddled years with the Bombers, he has found contentment and a new lease on life at Brisbane, where he has played all nine games and booted 16 goals. His contested marking, marks inside 50 and score involvement numbers are among the best in the competition and the miracle workers who make up the Lions’ strength and conditioning team have developed enough of a tank for Daniher to spend some time as a second ruckman.

THE FRONT BAR

u As a game and as an industry,

At the end of every season there is a hue and cry to ‘leave the rules alone’, but in this instance, the AFL got it right.

TOM HICKEY

u How can you not love this story?

Before the start of the season, the 30-year-old ruckman had played 102 games over 10 seasons with three clubs – 12 for Gold Coast, 67 for St Kilda and 23 for West Coast. Only in 2016 when he played 20 games for the Saints and in 2019 when he managed 20 for the Eagles, has he been close to a regular senior player. He is your classic AFL journeyman and there were no expectations when he was traded to Sydney at the end of last season for little more than a set of steak knives. Nine weeks in, the Swans are the most-improved team in the AFL, while Hickey ranks third for ruckmen on the AFL Player Ratings list and 12th in the entire competition. He was also ranked second for all ruckmen for clearances per game behind Nic Naitanui and third for contested possessions behind Brodie Grundy and Naitanui. He beat Grundy quite handily at the SCG last weekend. He overcame what shaped as a nasty knee injury earlier in the season to miss only a week and is absolutely in the recruit of the year conversation.

12  AFL RECORD

BORN AGAIN: Joe Daniher has cast off his injury woes with the Brisbane Lions (above); Tom Hickey has been a revelation at his fourth club, Sydney (below); veteran David Mundy (right) is showing no signs of slowing down in his 17th season; while The Front Bar continues to put the fun into football.

footy still takes itself far too seriously, which is why The Front Bar remains such essential TV viewing. The media industry that covers every inch of the game leaves itself wide open for a laugh and thank heavens for Andy Maher, Mick Molloy and Sam Pang who once a week on Channel Seven know where to find and how to deliver the gags. Credit also to their talent bookers and their archivists who might be the most resourceful of all in the footy media. And while we’re on the subject, let’s also give a shout-out to the Coodabeen Champions, Titus O’Reilly, the Australian Football Film Festival podcast and @Fake_Footy, @VFLPARK and our favourites @RewindRecord who help keep footy Twitter from becoming a cesspit.

DAVID MUNDY u He’s 35 and has 38 AFL Coaches

Association votes. That tells you plenty about the sort of season the evergreen Fremantle midfielder is enjoying. Now in his 17th season, Mundy is rated by Champion Data as elite for goals, score assists and score involvements and above average for disposals, metres gained, uncontested possessions, clearances and intercept possessions. One of the perennial debates in footy is the merits of an AFL coach taking charge of players who were former teammates. Justin Longmuir and Mundy played together at the Dockers for three seasons and you have to think that Longmuir wanted a few familiar faces at his side once he took over as coach. It has been an inspired move to keep him going. @hashbrowne

North Melbourne which notched its first win of the season last weekend. The Kangaroos found themselves 32 points behind Hawthorn in Launceston, but rallied to pull off a stunning comeback, resulting in a stirring win on coach David Noble’s 54th birthday. The Roos had plenty of key contributors, but none were more important than inside midfielder and spiritual leader Ben Cunnington. The 29-year-old finished with 37 disposals, 13 clearances, nine intercepts and a massive 27 contested possessions in a fearless and tireless display. Cunnington was enormous in the final quarter with 11 possessions – remarkably all contested – and five clearances as the Roos got over the line in a seven-point thriller. He wasn’t alone though. The experienced campaigner formed a powerful midfield partnership with Jy Simpkin, who had 38 touches to go with 13 clearances (five centre clearances), nine tackles and five score involvements. Simpkin praised Cunnington and ruckman Todd Goldstein for their roles in allowing him to find plenty of the ball. “It makes it a lot easier when I have Todd Goldstein and Ben Cunnington feeding me the ball through the midfield,” he said on SEN. While it will be seen as a team effort, the influence of Cunnington on those around him was clear for all to see and a key to North’s season-first triumph. ANDREW SLEVISON

with MARK GENGE u Glenelg went on

West Coast has three forwards among the leading goalkickers this year with Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Oscar Allen. When was the last time a club had three players kicking at least 50 goals each in a season? GRAHAM HOPE, CRAWLEY, WA MG: The most recent example of a trio kicking at least 50 goals apiece in a season was in Hawthorn’s premiership year of 2015, with Jack Gunston (57), Luke Breust (52) and Jarryd Roughead (50). In 1926, Melbourne had three players top the half-century – Harry Moyes (55), Harry Davie (50) and Bob Johnson (50). The club won its second VFL flag that year, with Johnson kicking six in the Grand Final and Moyes three. In 1935, Roy Moore, in his first VFL season, kicked 52 goals for South Melbourne, while Bob Pratt (103) and Laurie Nash (51) completed the trio. The Swans were runners-up to Collingwood, with Pratt missing the Grand Final after being hit by a truck on the eve of the match. Other big-scoring years for

a rampage against Central District in round 17 of the 1975 SANFL season, setting a league-record highest score of 49.23 (317) and a greatest winning margin of 244 points. The Tigers’ quarter tallies were 12.6, 13.6, 9.5 and 15.6. Central District’s back pocket Julian Swinstead said it was like facing a machinegun loaded with footballs. Fred Phillis kicked a club-record 18.6 from his 28 kicks and 17 marks and reached his 100th goal of the season along the way. Big man Peter Carey booted 8.2 from 20 kicks and 10 marks.

SHARING THE LOAD: Eagles Josh Kennedy (left), Jack Darling and Oscar Allen (inset) booted 11 goals between them in the win over the Crows last week.

In round 15 that year, the Hawks booted 28.23 (191) against Geelong at Princes Park, with Hudson (eight), Hendrie (eight) and Matthews (seven) scoring 23 goals between them. Hawthorn finished third after kicking an inaccurate 5.15 (45) in a losing preliminary final.

Glenelg narrowly missed the 50-goal mark when wingman John MacFarlane hit the post as the final siren sounded. In two games against Central District that season, Phillis kicked 29 goals, having bagged 11 earlier in the year. However, in the Grand Final, Glenelg, the flag favourite, kicked its lowest score of the season, 7.10 (52), to lose to Norwood by 12 points, with Phillis scoring six behinds. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK GOAL UMPIRE FEELS A LITTLE ‘DUSTY’ u He’s left a trail of

destruction when taking on opponents with his famous ‘don’t argue’ fend-off, but Dustin Martin has accidentally added a goal umpire to the list of those who have come off second-best when taking on the Richmond superstar. With the Tigers storming home in the final quarter of last Saturday’s thriller against GWS, Martin crashed into goal umpire Adam Wojcik when he soccered through a crucial goal just millimetres from the goal line. The Tiger champ couldn’t halt his momentum and poor old Wojcik felt the full force of the collision. Wojcik had to be subbed off with a dislocated shoulder and, while his replacement was making his way on to the ground, there was more agony as Tiger fans anxiously awaited the goal review decision. In the end it was ‘umpire’s call’ and the goal stood – but not Wojcik, who also had Brisbane’s Joe Daniher jumping on his back for a mark the previous week.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u Plenty was spoken about Brisbane’s Jarryd Lyons (142) winning the Marcus Ashcroft Medal for his best-on-ground performance against his old club in the QClash. But there hasn’t been enough said about the Fantasy season he’s putting together. His

37 disposals, six marks and nine tackles helped him to his equal-highest score of the season and it should be noted that his lowest score has been 95, making him one of the most consistent Fantasy players of 2021. Owned by just two per cent of Fantasy Classic coaches and carrying an average draft pick (ADP) of 35 in Fantasy Draft, he’s been passed up by many, but those who jumped on have been very happy.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

u Cameron Guthrie (138) and Mitch Duncan (134) have been the Cats’ top scorers for the past four weeks and again got the job done. Darcy Parish (131) continued his hot run for the Bombers, while teammate Nick Hind (122) posted his best numbers of the year and is putting his hand up as the mid-priced player of the season. Sean Darcy (133) is the poster boy for the ‘punt rucks’ strategy in Fantasy Draft, averaging 92 and having an ADP of 246.

JAMES JORDON MELB, MID – 110 u Equal top score for the undefeated Dees, Jordon racked up 20 disposals, but it was his 13 tackles that helped him post his career-high score. Collected eight disposals and six tackles for 50 points in the third term.

4

MATT FLYNN GWS, RUC – 109 u Finally back in the team, putting up a season-high score in a great display against Toby Nankervis.

3

RILEY COLLIER-DAWKINS RICH, MID – 86 u Grabbed his opportunity in the Tigers’ depleted midfield. Boosted stats with seven tackles.

2

JAMES ROWE ADEL, FWD – 76 u Produced his best score since round one and has kick-started his cash generation again.

CODY WEIGHTMAN WB, FWD – 73 u Kicked three goals in the Dogs’ epic win in his first game of the year.

DEF, $597,000 u The star defender looks back to his best after returning from concussion and his price has bottomed out with a BE of 97. He has dropped $87K from the start of the year and has a nice run of match-ups leading into the round 13 bye.

PETER LADHAMS

PORT ADELAIDE

RUC/FWD, $449,000 u A crisis in the ruck has created opportunity and the big man took full advantage. He couldn’t get a sniff of it earlier in the year as a forward, but scored 98 with 37 hit-outs and 18 possessions in his first game as sole ruck for the year.

MELBOURNE

MID, $520,000 u When a rookie hits about $500K, it’s usually time to offload them to a premium. That is unless the rookie is scoring like a premium, as we have seen with this tackling machine, who is averaging 99 in his past three. Has a BE of just 27.

ZACH MERRETT

ESSENDON

MID, $802,000 u The ball magnet was anything but that against the Dockers, scoring a season-low 67, which was a disaster for those who backed him in with the ‘C’. It caused a price drop of $28K and it will continue to plummet now he has a BE of 145.

SELL ROWAN MARSHALL

ST KILDA

RUC/FWD, $648,000 u The luckless big man made an awesome start against the Cats before again succumbing to his troublesome foot injury. Unfortunately, he looks set for another extended period on the sidelines.

TOBY GREENE

GWS GIANTS

FWD, $638,000 u The acting skipper was enjoying a great season with an average of 89. Unfortunately, he went down with a shoulder injury against the Tigers which will keep him out for four weeks, forcing the hand of his coaches at the trade table.

JACK BOWES

GOLD COAST SUNS

DEF, $659,000 u The hard-working Sun has been a sensation this season, averaging an impressive 95, which includes four big hundreds. He has increased $93K on the season, but will need to be moved on after injuring his hamstring on 42 against the Lions.

u Hasn’t set the world on fire this season, but reminded us how good he can be with a season-high 107 against the Pies. His price is down $116K since the start of the year and, for under $500K, you could do much worse.

u The big Crow is a shadow of his former self and a huge cause of frustration for his owners. Don’t get me wrong, if you have a luxury trade, pull the trigger, just make sure it’s not at the expense of your team long term.

u When deciding my trades, I keep bye rounds in mind. For example, Tom Powell is a popular option to move on, but I will hold as he can play in rounds 13 and 14 when I have premiums missing.

u We’re starting to see a bit of a change in which teams are giving up Fantasy points to their opponents. Despite their solid starts, the Suns and Crows are back to being easy to score against.

u Our captains last week were a bit of a letdown with most of the popular options posting below-average scores. This week I am all-in on Jack Macrae to post his highest score of the season.

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Hawks falling off the perch An era has ended for Hawthorn so the big question now is how do the Hawks go about rebuilding?

‘B

ore-thorn’ read the screaming headline on the back page of the Herald Sun and it was hard to argue with the story that followed. Hawthorn, until recently a powerhouse of the AFL, a club that spawned so many AFL senior coaches and other leading footy figures in the middle of the past decade, has become the most drab, uninspiring and unwatchable team in the competition. Hawk fans who have had the misfortune to watch them stumble and fumble through much of the season would attest to that. Last Saturday’s seven-point loss to previously winless North Melbourne underlined that these are the dark days of Hawthorn’s rebuild. The club tried to tease out a bit more success in the years that followed the last of the three-peat flags in 2015 by bringing in the likes of Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara and Chad Wingard, in lieu of early draft picks. Decorated players were encouraged to move on if they could get better and longer-term deals elsewhere. Those with a deep interest in list management believe the Hawks should have hit the draft harder from 2016, once hopes of a fourth straight flag were dashed. Many supporters agree. But given the success enjoyed with recycled

players over the premiership journey, who could blame them for going down the same well one last time? In 2021, the Hawks need to have close to their best list available to be competitive, which is why the absence of James Sicily all season and Jack Gunston for most of it has cut deep. They’ve also been without their two most recent first-round picks, Will Day and Denver Grainger-Barras, for effectively the entire season. Both will be back after the bye and, along with Changkuoth Jiath, Tyler Brockman, Jacob Koschitzke and Emerson Jeka, to name just a few, it gives fans reason to keep watching games. Hawthorn’s critics say it has ignored the draft. It was a valid criticism until a couple of years ago, but the Hawks nailed the Day pick in 2019, had five selections inside the top 45 last year and, given they own Collingwood’s 2021 second round selection, they’ll likely have three picks inside the top 25 later this year. And perhaps more if they’re truly brave and trade out one of James Worpel, Luke Breust, Mitchell, O’Meara or Sicily, the only players at the club who would warrant a first-round selection in exchange. It was boldness like this at the trade table in Alastair Clarkson’s first couple of years that fast-tracked his first list build.

The Hawks might consider following Essendon’s lead in 2020 by converting what could be a top-three pick into two selections later in the top 10, given that early indications are that after the expected first two selections – Collingwood-bound Nick Daicos and Jason Horne – there isn’t much between the next 10 best-ranked players. And they intend to hit the 2022 draft hard as well, which means that Hawthorn supporters can expect a healthy, timely and much-needed injection of exciting, top-end talent into the club in the next 18 months. What the Hawks do have is the goodwill of their supporters, who have known that eventually a price would be paid for all that success. All they have asked is for some honesty and transparency about the direction the club is heading and, after listening to Clarkson and more recently president Jeff Kennett, they can be left in no doubt that a full rebuild is underway. It will surely take longer than the two years Kennett recently suggested to be back in contention, but they’ll be patient as long as the club takes no shortcuts and demonstrates progress. But Clarkson and his likely successor, Sam Mitchell, have loads to do. Last Saturday’s loss to North Melbourne provided ample proof of that.
