riday night’s blockbuster at Marvel Stadium between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne has had footy historians racking their brains as to the last time there was a match-up of such significance between these clubs. Nothing yet has matched the 1954 Grand Final, a 51-point win to the Bulldogs and the first of just two flags they have won. They met in the preliminary final seven years later and a 27-point win to Footscray meant Melbourne missed the Grand Final for their first time in eight years. Round 22, 1987, was epic. The Demons won by 15 points at Whitten Oval to make the finals for the first time in 24 years, tipping the Dogs out.

We have no bigger challenge than the Bulldogs DEMON COACH SIMON GOODWIN

u It would be almost impossible to quantify the legacy indigenous players have had on our game, but you could certainly qualify it. Think of the first word that pops into your mind at the very mention of these players (and apologies to many stars not listed) – ‘Polly’ Farmer, Barry Cable, Adam Goodes, Lance Franklin, Andrew McLeod, Shaun Burgoyne, Gavin Wanganeen,

In 1994, they played the last of four finals clashes, a 79-point win to Melbourne, highlighted by a 10-goal bag from star Demon Garry Lyon. There hasn’t been a more-hyped game between them since. They both sit at 9-1, two games clear at the top of the ladder and have been the best and most consistent teams all year.

Cyril Rioli, Maurice Rioli, Michael Long, Eddie Betts, Michael O’Loughlin, Nicky Winmar, the Krakouer brothers (Phil and Jim) and Peter Matera. How does ‘game-changer’ sound for Farmer or perhaps their nicknames ‘Silk’ and ‘Magic’ for Burgoyne and O’Loughlin respectively? Again, we get to celebrate the impact indigenous players have had on the game with the

The Demons lost by a point to Adelaide last Saturday, but might still be unbeaten had Crows defender Nick Murray been penalised for what seemed a blatant handball out of bounds with just seconds to go that should have resulted in a free kick and a shot at goal after the final siren. The Demons moved on quickly. “We know what we’re up against,” coach Simon Goodwin said. “They’re a high-quality team, but we feel our game is in a really good space to challenge the high-quality teams in the competition and we have no bigger challenge than the Bulldogs on a Friday night. “It’s something we look forward to.” The Bulldogs go into the game in better form, with the scalps of Port Adelaide and St Kilda over the past fortnight. They destroyed the Saints by 111 points on the back of five goals from Aaron Naughton, 41 touches from Jack Macrae and 26 more tackles despite also having 50 more possessions. But they have lost another star from their midfield with Adam Treloar set to miss up to eight weeks with a syndesmosis. “It’s great to be in this position and I’m sure the Demons think the same,” Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said. “We look forward to the challenge. They’ve been really impressive so we’ll have our hands full.” Last Saturday night’s demolition job by the Bulldogs shone an unwelcome spotlight on the Saints. The tackle count was the lead indicator of what coach Brett

Sir Doug Nicholls Round which this year will be played over the next two weekends. It will allow fans in Darwin and Alice Springs to watch AFL football live and hordes to return to the MCG for the annual Dreamtime at the ’G match which had to be moved from Melbourne in 2020. More importantly, we get to celebrate indigenous culture and learn more about our

nation’s first people. The stories, the varied backgrounds, the art and the music and, of course, we get to see those magnificent indigenous guernseys. Since the AFL introduced Indigenous Round in 2007, it has been a feature of the League’s fixturing, and with the renaming of the round to Sir Doug Nicholls Round in 2016, we honour not only a great indigenous man but a great Australian. ONE WEEK at a TIME Ratten termed an “unacceptable” performance and the finals run that captured all our attention last year seems an eternity ago. St Kilda’s list management has been very much geared towards winning now, but there will be no finals appearance this year and the club is at the crossroads. Brisbane flexed its muscle with a powerful 28-point win over Richmond last Friday. The Lions have won six straight games and enjoyed serving it up to the Tigers on both the scoreboard and in the clinches. Richmond’s lengthy injury list is starting to bite, but as Brisbane coach Chris Fagan noted afterwards, his team had a few missing as well. By late Sunday afternoon, the Tigers

were out of the eight. Not since 2016 have they been outside the eight at this stage of the season. They have been replaced by the GWS Giants, who outlasted West Coast by 16 points just days after learning they’d be without the scoring power of Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan for a month. It was an excellent performance from a team that has been well coached throughout 2021. Joining the Giants and Tigers at 5-5 is Fremantle, which held on for a thrilling two-point win over Sydney despite a six-goal haul from Lance Franklin. Despite their 6-4 record, the Swans seem the one team that might yet slip from the eight. Thanks to the results last weekend, there is a genuine chasing pack.

NAB AFL Rising Star CODY WEIGHTMAN WESTERN BULLDOGS

T

he ladder-leading Western Bulldogs are a mighty tough team to crack into and the challenge for their fringe players is to cement a place in the side when the opportunity presents. Introducing Cody Weightman. The small forward played three games for the Dogs last year, his first season with the club, after being selected as the No. 15 pick at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft. He also demonstrated a flair for the spectacular with a goal of the year nomination in 2020. It took until round nine for the former Beaconsfield junior to earn selection this season and he has wasted no time making a bid for a berth in Luke Beveridge’s best 22. He kicked 3.2 in the win over Port Adelaide in his first game back and followed up with 2.2 in the 111-point thrashing of St Kilda last week. He is averaging 13 touches and 2.5 marks inside 50 since his return to the side. ASHLEY BROWNE

he AFL will hold its second Mid-Season Rookie Draft next Wednesday, with nearly 600 players from around the country nominating in the hope of receiving a list spot. Ex-AFL players, state league stars and undrafted teenagers can be selected and most clubs will get their chance to pick the best talent available. The 2019 iteration had multiple success stories, headlined by Richmond’s Marlion Pickett, who made his debut in the Grand Final later that year. Collingwood picked up defender John Noble, the Bulldogs also found a backman in Ryan Gardner and Essendon got its hands on midfielder Will Snelling. Last year’s draft was cancelled due to COVID. This year, Jacob Edwards is expected to be the first player taken in the draft by North Melbourne, after announcing he would nominate. The hybrid ruck/forward is still in Year 12 and was likely to be a top-20 pick if he had elected to wait until the 2021 NAB AFL Draft. Sacked Adelaide forward Tyson Stengle is also expected to be a hot property, with Carlton and Collingwood both linked to him. Recently delisted AFL players around the country have nominated, including Ben Crocker (Collingwood/

Adelaide), Wylie Buzza (Geelong/Port Adelaide), Michael Knoll (Sydney), Riley Knight (Adelaide) and Paddy McCartin (St Kilda). Of the state league players, Frankston midfielder Nathan Freeman has been averaging 40 disposals a game in the VFL, while Werribee defender Kye Declase could go close after nearly being selected by Melbourne in the pre-season. The Western Bulldogs and Geelong are the only teams without picks at this stage.

St Kilda can take five players, Gold Coast can take four, while Adelaide has three and Collingwood, Melbourne, North Melbourne and Carlton can take two each. Draft picks can fill the holes left by long-term injuries. For example, the Blues losing David Cuningham and Caleb Marchbank to torn ACLs allows them to make two selections. About 20 picks are expected to be made, meaning those selected will get to live, or re-live, their AFL dreams.

or me, Sir Doug Nicholls Round is about paying respect to those who have come before me and playing alongside my brothers such as Jarrod Harbrow and Sean Lemmens. It’s what these great players have passed on to me that means the most. The other thing is family. As a kid growing up, I followed the Crows because that’s who my Dad went for. In the lounge room of our home in Adelaide, he taught my brother and me about taking hangers off the arm of the couch and where to stand for the drop of the ball. I’ve heard Nicky Winmar learned to take screamers from

a car seat stuck in the middle of a paddock. For Uncle Syd Jackson, this year’s honouree, he had to get a kick with 40 other kids competing for one footy. Some people think the way Aboriginal footballers play is natural, but I think it’s because we love football and we are schooled to understand the game from a young age. When I think about the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, the players who stick out in my mind are the little masters. Andrew McLeod was incredible, as was Leon Davis. But when I think about players, I can’t go past Cyril Rioli. He’s the man. But then I think harder and Eddie Betts comes into my head. When I got the chance to swap jumpers with him last

year when we were up in Darwin it was unforgettable. It’s through those sorts of experiences that you become stoked for the opportunity to play alongside some of the best footballers ever. It’s deadly. For me though, footy is not my end goal. Playing is a privilege and my profession, but being a footballer is not my only thing. But for me, the people who keep me centred other than my family are ‘Harbs’ and ‘Lemmo’. They have guided me along the pathway. Lemmo took me into his home and taught me about all the important things I need to do to prepare. For Harbs, he is the king of the community. If we are at a footy clinic or a school, he is the person I try to model myself on. I just count myself lucky.

rowing up in the Riverina, I started playing Auskick for the Culcairn Lions. It was the same club my Dad played about 400 games for. My first memory was running around and playing with my mates and the smell of the snags on the barbecue. As a kid, I was obsessed with footy and would try to dribble the ball through doorways and up the passage. My mates and I would take turns at trying to kick the ball into power poles and through the branches of trees as we headed to school or knocked around town. I was trying to be like Aaron Davey, as I was a Demons fan. As I got a bit older, I started to fill out and my athleticism seemed to really sync in with my skills. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  9

STAND UP TO RACISM

AFL RECORD SIR DOUG NICHOLLS ROUND

I was playing senior footy by the age of 15. Playing against men teaches you a thing or two and, before I knew it, I was in the GWS Giants Academy system and really enjoying the experience. I was on a scholarship in Year 11 and 12 through the Giants Academy and I have essentially been with the club for nine years. Footy has given me so much. Great mates. Great experiences, like playing against ‘Buddy’ Franklin. I was in total awe of him. I just wanted to stand there and look at him. I laugh now about it as he kicked a bag on me. When I think of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, I genuinely get goose bumps. This year though is even more exciting as I found out from my Dad’s cousin that I am related to Sir Doug, so the round has a greater significance. My Dad only met his cousin last year as he is part of the Stolen Generation and he had all this incredible information, like my Nan was one of 18. All born in a tent because they were not allowed into the town hospital. When I hear those stories, I think about what I want my footy legacy to be, but how I want to use that to help kids in the Juvenile Justice cycle. I see the statistics and think about those Indigenous kids in prison and it breaks my heart. So when I found out about my connection to Sir Doug, I knew it made sense. He is such an inspiration and I can’t wait to get out there and play.

eeting with Nicky Winmar, Gavin Wanganeen and the two tyros, Kysaiah Pickett and Bradley Hill, for a photo shoot on the MCG the other night was a great thrill. How fantastic it was to see these great past and current players on the middle of Australia’s most famous ground. Most of the times I have been there, the place has been alive with fans, but the other night the stands were quiet. At one point I took a moment to pause and think about my journey from Roelands Mission, near Bunbury in WA, and reflect on all the great people I have met along the way. Everyone from my mission, brothers and sisters, many who did not have the opportunity I had, and all the people from all the great clubs I had anything to do with. From a scrawny little fella running around the paddocks and trying to get a kick to playing with some of the best players of any era and rubbing shoulders with captains of industry and champion sportspeople. It’s been a mighty journey. As I walked on to the MCG for that photo shoot, I felt completely at home. I became so comfortable playing at the MCG in front of big

crowds that it did not bother me in the slightest. I think about this and it’s quite something considering I was as a little boy removed from my mother at the age of three, growing up in institutions and having no record of my birth, so the MCG felt comfortable and familiar. Despite all those challenges, I was supported by so many good people and so my main goal was to make a success of my life. It was here on the MCG I did this, but my motivation was my Roelands family. I always felt a strong link and pride in my connection to Roelands Mission believing my mob would be pleased with my achievements. I heard they had the wireless aerial connected to the clothesline to listen to the 1970 Grand Final. Great memories. I copped my fair share of abuse, but football opened the door just enough that I could step through it. This is what I have kept doing all along, stepping through the doors of opportunity because if footy has taught me anything, (it is) if you don’t take the opportunity, then you will die wondering. Sir Doug Nicholls, the man the round is named after, understood this too. Step up and step through, take the opportunity, that is what footy is all about.

where everyone should feel safe, included and respected. This Sir Doug Nicholls Round, AFL clubs at all levels are showing their support for anti-racism. To honour the legacy of Sir Doug Nicholls, we acknowledge the leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players who have been paving the way to a fairer and more inclusive game for many years. When it comes to opposing racism, there is plenty we can all do. It is everyone’s responsibility to reflect on the impact of racism, and to call it out if ever they see or hear it. AFL RECORD 2021 INDIGENOUS GUERNSEYS

ADELAIDE CROWS

Worn for traditional dances, the dhoeri (head dress) is a significant part of Torres Strait Islander culture and represents Ben Davis’ personal story of discovery of his own culture as well as the integral story of culture between players, members and staff at Adelaide.

COLLINGWOOD

Magpies are nurturing in nature and guide their young and the roles of teachers, elders or respected persons are important to Indigenous communities and families. The magpies are flying onwards and upwards, with outstretched wings, reaching new heights and possibilities.

GEELONG CATS

Designed by Corrina Eccles, a traditional owner of Wadawurrung Country, the guernsey represents a local story and incorporates a number of meaningful landmarks across the Barwon region. Bunjil the eagle honours the recent tragic loss of two lives among the Indigenous community.

HAWTHORN

Hawthorn’s guernsey was designed by proud Nyarinyin, Pitjantjantjara and Yankuntjantjara woman Justine Ronberg. Her work was selected by Indigenous Hawks players Chad Wingard, Shaun Burgoyne and Jarman Impey, who felt a strong connection to the stories represented.

PORT ADELAIDE

The brown, red, yellow and orange dots down the bottom of the design represent the land as well as the people who walk the land – their skin colour and blood lines. It is also a gathering for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures coming together and becoming one strong family.

SYDNEY SWANS

Guunya is the black swan – the wings have white in them which show he still has some white feathers to prove he was once a white swan. The body features a shield shape, which represents how Guunya protected himself against other birds.

12  AFL RECORD

BRISBANE LIONS

Fitzroy’s history is celebrated by the semi-circle shapes arched beneath the club logo, each a tribute to the 13 Indigenous players to have represented the club. Below them are six bold red circles that symbolise the grounds the club has called home throughout its 138-year-history.

ESSENDON

The patterns in the background pay homage to Gunditjmara Country, representing the eel traps and lake systems that allowed Gunditj Mara to have abundance and to prosper for millennia. One of the totems of the many clans is the red-tailed black cockatoo.

GOLD COAST SUNS

The artwork by Yugambeh artist Luther Cora and Larrakia artist Trent Lee was designed to ensure the Suns’ connection to the Gold Coast and Darwin is clear and harmonious. The art represents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a clear connection to country and the connection between Larrakia and Yugambeh.

MELBOURNE

This year’s guernsey centres around the Demons community. The players, coaches, staff, members and supporters – everyone who is part of Melbourne. The community is at the core of the design. The lines into the centre represent the journey.

RICHMOND

Designed by Michelle Kerrin (Arrernte/Luritja), in conjunction with Shane Edwards (Arrernte) and Jack Riewoldt. “This is for our men – it represents the strength of brotherhood and the connections made on and off the field,” Kerrin said.

WEST COAST EAGLES

The story behind the Eagles’ guernsey is titled ‘Nyoongar Story’. It depicts the Waugul (Rainbow Serpent) as it travels the land and watches over the Eagles’ journey to the Grand Final at the MCG. To Nyoongar people, the Waugul is widely regarded and is known as the ‘Creator Spirit’.

CARLTON

The design by Gunditjmara woman and artist Laura Thompson recognises the diversity of Indigenous players at Carlton, their cultural identity, families and the country to which they belong. It pays tribute to the seven current AFL and AFLW Indigenous players and each of the player’s mob names are listed.

FREMANTLE

A collaboration between past player Des Headland, AFLW player Mikayla Morrison and Indigenous artist Kevin Bynder, the jumper combines the heritage of Headland and Morrison, highlights some proud historical aspects of Fremantle FC and acknowledges the loss of 373 Aboriginal men at a Rottnest Island prison camp between 1838 and 1931.

GWS GIANTS

The design, titled ‘Bobby’s Giant Journey’, tells the story of Bobby Hill from his upbringing in Northam, WA, to moving to Sydney in 2018 to represent the Giants. The story is predominantly told on the back of the jumper and is one of growth and the importance of community on both sides of the continent.

NORTH MELBOURNE

A group of kangaroos is called a mob and North Melbourne has many strong proud Indigenous men and women who are walking the footsteps paved by previous legends of the game.

ST KILDA

Former Saints star Nicky Winmar made a stand against racism at Victoria Park, on April 17, 1993. A silhouette of his iconic ‘I’m Black And I’m Proud’ pose sits on the front of the jumper as a defining moment in his legacy.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

The family story of former Bulldog Lindsay Gilbee features on the 2021 Indigenous guernsey. Gilbee worked closely with renowned artist Nathan Patterson to produce the striking artwork, which is based on his family story of the Boandik people of South Australia.

somebody produces a performance for the ages. More often than not, such a dominant display ends in victory. In this specific case, however, it was not rewarded with four points. It is hard to find the right superlatives for the immense output of Clayton Oliver in Melbourne’s one-point defeat to the Crows in Adelaide last Saturday. Oliver did everything in his power, alongside Christian Petracca, to preserve the Demons’ flawless win-loss record, but in the end it was not to be. Away from the result and specifically dissecting Oliver’s game, it was one of skill and substance. He amassed 38 disposals, which came courtesy of 13 clearances, seven centre clearances and a remarkable 27 contested possessions. Add to that 13 tackles, 11 score involvements, eight inside 50s and three goals, making this a performance to marvel at. Oliver took things to another level in the final term, gathering 13 disposals and winning five clearances, only to see his efforts fall agonisingly short. His individual game was the subject of praise from Demons coach Simon Goodwin. “He’s having a sensational season,” Goodwin said. “His ability to win the ball in contested areas and then have an influence forward of centre was really strong for us. ANSWER MAN Earlier this season, Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury broke the record for most matches at the MCG. Which player has kicked the most goals at the ground? BARRY LOCK, VIA EMAIL

with GRAHAM PILKINGTON

HAPPY HUNTING GROUND: Former Richmond champion Matthew Richardson holds the record for most goals at the MCG; (inset) fellow Tiger star Jack Riewoldt.

GP: Scott Pendlebury has played 203 games and kicked 119 goals at the MCG, passing the previous record of 200 games held by Richmond’s Kevin Bartlett (379 goals). Melbourne’s Henry Mitchell kicked the first goal at the venue in the second round of the inaugural VFL season in 1897 against Geelong. Richmond’s Matthew Richardson has kicked the most goals at the MCG with 464 out of his career total of 800. Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd, a triple Coleman Medal winner, finished just three behind Richardson, but played 19 fewer games there. The highest individual total at the venue is 14 by Gary Ablett snr for the Cats in 1989 and 1993 and North Melbourne’s John Longmire in 1990. Ablett liked the MCG. His 291 goals there came from just 55 games. Of current players, Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt will have at least third position in his sights as the MCG is his home ground.

u Hawthorn joined the

VFL in 1925 and took many years to become a success, playing its first final in 1957. A venue the Hawks struggled at was Collingwood’s home, Victoria Park – they had to wait until round 13, 1960, to record their first victory at the ground. Hawthorn was in front for most of the day and at three-quarter time was 15 points up. However, the Magpies fought back in the last quarter to lead by five points in time-on. In the final moments, the Hawks went goalwards and forward John Peck marked 20m out as the final siren sounded. Peck coolly popped the ball through to give the Hawks a one-point victory as supporters went wild. The Football Record said Peck’s goal was a sensational climax to a thrilling match. Hawthorn finished the season with six wins in a row, on its way to its first premiership the following year. Peck, who kicked 475 goals in 213 games for the Hawks, was the League’s leading goalkicker in three successive seasons – 1963-65. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK

HICKEY HOBBLED BUT BATTLES ON u Playing through the pain

barrier is nothing new for Sydney ruckman Tom Hickey. The journeyman, who is at his fourth AFL club, has been a revelation in 2021, but his left knee is causing him all sorts of grief. He received another knock in last week’s two-point loss to Fremantle, but bravely played on despite the injury and having to contend with Dockers emerging star Sean Darcy. Swans coach John Longmire said after the game he hoped Hickey would be

20  AFL RECORD

available for Sunday’s crucial clash with Carlton at the SCG. Hickey has played nine of a possible 10 games in 2021 and has been a bargain pick-up for the Swans in last year’s trade period. He also has the distinction of becoming the first player to play in four different states after starting his career with Gold Coast (2011-12), before moving to St Kilda (2013-18), West Coast (2019-20) and now to Sydney, where he is firmly entrenched as the Swans’ No. 1 ruckman.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u It could become official if he keeps this up. Jack Macrae (153) has scored triple figures in all 10 games this season. In round 10, Macrae racked up an equal season-high 41 disposals to go with his six marks and

DARCY PARISH

inducted as a member of the Fantasy pig pen.

ESSENDON

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

u While Clayton Oliver (155) posted his highest score of the year, it’s Darcy Parish (144) who is becoming one of the most valuable Fantasy players this season. He is averaging 130 from his past five and only has four per cent ownership. Similarly, Ben Keays (126) has been super-consistent with a season-low of 91 for his season average of 106. Another shout-out must go to Aaron Hall (122) who is returning career-best numbers, averaging 125 in his past five.

TOP ROUND 10 SCORERS nine tackles. There were questions about how the Bulldogs’ midfield would look and the consistency of scoring, but they’ve blown that out of the water as the team that has scored the most 100s this season, averaging 4.8 a game. Macrae is averaging 121 and with some more piggish scores like this, he could be officially snouted and

CALEB POULTER COLL, MID/FWD – 108 u In his fourth game, the Pie was a shining light despite the one-point loss to Port. He found the ball 23 times and took 12 marks. With his DPP status, Poulter will be a valuable player in the byes. RYAN BYRNES STK, MID – 107 u Eight touches and 32 points in the last quarter helped Byrnes to be the Saints’ top scorer.

JORDON SWEET WB, RUC – 84 u Making a few dollars while Stefan Martin and Tim English are out of the Dogs’ line-up. NIK COX ESS, DEF/FWD – 83 u Had a ‘rest’ last week as the medical sub and appeared well-rested taking nine marks. CODY WEIGHTMAN WB, FWD – 78 u Kicked two goals, but more importantly, his job security increased for the byes.

BUY MID, $811,000 u Rarely is the form player of the League as unique as the Bomber ball magnet. Coming off a 144, for a three-round average of 131, only four per cent of the competition are enjoying his career-best form in a full-time mid role.

TOM GREEN

GWS GIANTS

MID, $544,000 u After a slow start, the highly-touted youngster has hit his straps and presents as a value selection. Unfortunately, he will have only one game before his bye, but his 114 and three-week average of 100 is a sign of things to come.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

MID/FWD, $314,000 u The young Dog rarely scores much more than a 50, but a 50 in the first round of the byes is huge compared with a dreaded donut. Has played all but one game this year and, given the injuries at the kennel, he should hang around for two more weeks.

DUSTIN MARTIN

RICHMOND

MID/FWD, $564,000 u The superstar scored a disappointing 66 in a tough match-up with the Lions. Rest easy though, his opponents over the next five outings are some of the easiest to score against. Remains a bargain for non-owners.

MID, $635,000

WESTERN BULLDOGS

MID, $692,000 u In a game where big scores were easy to come by, the loss of the Dog ball magnet was a huge blow for his eight per cent of owners. Subbed out with an ankle injury on 37. He lost $50K and has a BE of 154.

BRANDON ELLIS

GOLD COAST SUNS

MID, $736,000 u The running machine was the form player of the competition, but has dropped off and it’s worth moving him on to stop the bleeding. Has a three-game average of just 69 and dropped another $47K after his score of 66.

JORDAN DE GOEY

COLLINGWOOD

FWD, $422,000 u Thoughts are with anyone who still has the injury-ravaged Pie sitting in their forward line. The only thing he has going for him is a solid bye round, but that is a long time to watch him limp towards a score of 40.

u Ignore the inflated price tag, job security of our youngsters is vital through the byes. Despite the tought match-up against the Dogs, Byrnes took 12 marks for a season-high 108.

u Has been playing a variety of roles and his scoring has reflected that. In uncharacteristic circumstances, ‘Dependlebury’ hasn’t reached triple figures the past seven weeks.

ROUND 10 – 2098 PTS

ROUND 10 – 2116 PTS

ROUND 10 – 2140 PTS

u A whopping 2418 points was scored by the top team of round 10. If you’re aiming to win a cap by finishing in the top 100 overall, 20,571 points is the benchmark to get you the coveted headwear.

u Lachie Hunter has dropped $253K this season, the most of all players. He’s followed by Reilly O’Brien (-$247K). My worst selection has been Jordan De Goey, who is down a whopping $183K. Terrible pick.

u This is the last round before the byes. For rounds 12-14, your best 18 scorers from your on-field 22 will count for your weekly score in Fantasy Classic. Coaches can make three trades per bye round.

AFL RECORD PROMOTION

CAPTION: Caption caption.

CONNECTING TWO COMMUNITIES

The Gold Coast SUNS’ Indigenous guernsey features the work of two well-known artists.

T

he Gold Coast SUNS recently revealed the club’s 2021 Indigenous guernsey which will be worn for the first time in the club’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round match in Darwin. This year the club has facilitated a collaborative design featuring the artwork by Yugambeh artist Luther Cora and Larrakia artist Trent Lee. With the SUNS playing their Sir Doug Nicholls clash in Darwin for the second successive year, it was fitting the design ensured the connection to the Gold Coast and Darwin was clear and harmonious. “I’m always proud to represent my family, my community and the club,” Cora said. “I love the design I did – it was about community, different mobs coming together, reconciliation and also a celebration for the club.” The art represents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a clear relationship to country and the connection between Larrakia and Yugambeh. “It’s an honour for me to be able to be a part of the design process

and just to be able to express myself and represent our people here in Darwin,” Lee said. “I’m really excited to see the players wearing the guernsey and it’s really special to have Darwin included on this year’s guernsey.”

COMING TOGETHER: Gold Coast’s Indigenous stars (from left) Jarrod Harbrow, Joel Jeffrey, Izak Rankine, Malcolm Rosas, Sean Lemmens and Jy Farrar join artist Luther Cora to unveil the club’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey. Harbrow (below left) and Rankine (below right) show off the exciting new design.

The guernsey features two sea turtles, one on the front representing the Larrakia people and Darwin and one on the back representing the Yugambeh people and the Gold Coast. The two turtles with different coloured borders on their shell signify the difference between the Larrakia people and the Yugambeh people, but also acknowledge that we are all saltwater people and our connection to country and the sea is still strong. Sea turtles always come on to the land to lay their eggs and go back to the sea. They later return to the exact same location to birth their offspring, as this is also where their life began. Just like the sea turtle, we feel most connected to our country where our ancestors and people are from. The sun, which has been a key feature across the 2020 Indigenous guernsey and 2021 warm-up top, is featured heavily again, and the red, blue and yellow colours are synonymous of the traditional custodians of the Gold Coast, the birthplace of the SUNS. The sun is the giver of life and this sun represents people coming together. The rainbow serpent can be found in the background as the creator of animals, including the turtle, and the great giver of life and protector of water, which is its spiritual home. The names of all 17 Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander players who have represented the Gold Coast SUNS are also displayed on the back of the guernsey.

Power v Dockers

ROUND

11

HEAD to HEAD

VALIANT IN DEFEAT: Nat Fyfe fires out one of his 14 handballs, but the Dockers were no match for the Power last season.

Played 38: Port Adelaide 21, Fremantle Dockers 17. Since 2016: Port Adelaide 4, Fremantle Dockers 3. Most recent game: round 3, 2020, Port Adelaide d Fremantle Dockers by 29 points at Metricon Stadium. Highest attendance: 42,338, first semi-final, 2014, at Subiaco Oval.

PORT ADELAIDE

Highest score: 25.13 (163), round 14, 2001, at Subiaco Oval. Lowest score: 7.5 (47), round 7, 2012, at Subiaco Oval. Home record: 12-5 Away record: 9-12 Greatest winning margin: 92 points, round 14, 2001, at Subiaco Oval. Longest winning sequence: 5, round 13, 1997, to round 17, 1999. Most goals in a game: 7, Warren Tredrea, round 11, 2003, at Football Park.

Match Preview

u Port Adelaide and Fremantle both take winning form into Sunday’s match at Adelaide Oval. The Power had to come from behind to beat lowly Collingwood by one point in a low-scoring scrap on the road to stay in touch with the top four. There was not much to write home about Port’s performance, given it lost the contested ball and clearance count and was far from its fluent best. But with another valuable four points in the bank, the Power are well placed at 7-3 approaching the midway mark of the season. Coming off three straight losses, the Dockers got back on the winners’ list with a thrilling home win over top-eight

side Sydney. Skipper Nat Fyfe’s scrubby late goal proved to be the winner as the Dockers held on to claim victory by two points. They are equal on points with ninth-placed Richmond and eighth-placed GWS with a 5-5 win-loss record. Fremantle won on its last visit to Adelaide Oval, beating Adelaide by 14 points in round five – its only win away from Optus Stadium this season. The Dockers will need to pinch another couple of away victories to complement their home form if they want to make the eight. This is an opportunity to enhance their finals credentials, but Fremantle has never beaten the Power at Adelaide Oval. ALEX ZAIA

Highest score: 23.13 (151), round 22, 2006, at Subiaco Oval. Lowest score: 6.5 (41), round 3, 2020, at Metricon Stadium. Away record: 5-12 Home record: 12-9 Greatest winning margin: 79 points, round 22, 2006, at Subiaco Oval. Longest winning sequence: 6, round 19, 2009, to round 22, 2013. Most goals in a game: 6, Tony Modra, round 2, 1999, at Football Park; Jeff Farmer, round 22, 2006, at Subiaco Oval; Michael Walters, round 13, 2019, at Optus Stadium.

Prediction: Port Adelaide by 12 points

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Soft cap cuts hit hard Clubs are calling on the AFL to increase the soft cap in a bid to help overworked coaching and medical staff.

T

here is a quirky and, at times feisty, Twitter account called ‘AFL is not a sport’ (@AFLisnotasport) that calls out and rails against the countless times when Australian Football – as in the code – is referred to simply as ‘AFL’. It’s a phenomenon that likely started in Sydney, where there are four football codes in a desperate battle for market share and media coverage, but which sadly seems to have crept further south. And what makes the waters murky is that the AFL isn’t just the name of the competition at the elite level. It is the body that controls the entire code, from Auskick through to the 18-team senior competition across the country and indeed everywhere else on the planet where the game has even the slightest foothold. I mention this by way of introduction because the definition of what exactly is the AFL is at the heart of the debate taking place among the clubs and the League about the soft cap and the growing push by the clubs to ramp up their spending on football department expenditure. As part of the restructure of the game forced by COVID last year, the soft cap was slashed by about 30 per cent from $9.7m to $6m. The entire industry took a haircut, with player lists reduced in size and

94  AFL RECORD

SPREAD TOO THIN: Football department cutbacks are taking their toll, with many doctors and medical staff considering leaving the industry; (below) the Eagles have lamented their inability to give Willie Rioli the support he requires.

Some fine people were forced out of the game ... and many who remain are doing it tough

their salaries reduced, while jobs were lost across the entire industry. It is estimated that 30 per cent of those who worked in the wider football industry were let go in 2020 and have not returned in a full-time capacity. But the cuts to the soft cap were particularly felt. About 60 coaches were released by their clubs, as were a similar number of related football staff such as medical officers, sports scientists, analysts, health and welfare experts and recruiters. Clubs understood why the cuts were needed and, by and large, supported them. Football had to cut its cloth accordingly. But that’s not to say that fears weren’t felt for what it would all mean. Some fine people were forced out of the game last year and many of those who remain are doing it tough. The excitement that marks the start of the season has morphed into the weekly grind, and the reports are coming through of over-stretched coaches working 12-hour days and getting perhaps half a day off each week, recruiters spread too thin and doctors and ancillary medical staff considering leaving the industry because the long hours aren’t matched by the remuneration on offer elsewhere. The ability of clubs to deal with players with issues has also been pared back significantly. West Coast coach Adam Simpson has previously flagged that clubs will take fewer risks with their drafting because of a lack of support staff for those players who, as gifted as

they are, might come from troubled backgrounds and require that extra pastoral care. Already, the Eagles have been hamstrung in their attempts to give Willie Rioli the help and support he needs. But let’s get back to the AFL, what it means and what it stands for. Some clubs have asked for around $1m to be injected back into their soft caps. Others are happy to settle for less. The final figure will reportedly be around $500,000, with the clubs being firmly reminded by the League that they’re not the only ones with their hands up asking for more. AFLW, pathway leagues and grassroots clubs and associations across the country want and need not just some love and attention from head office, but a larger slice of the pie as the revenue starts trickling back into the game. This remains the moment in time when the AFL is indeed the sport and not just the League.
