EDITOR’S LETTER
Melbourne-Geelong Grand Final. Right? That was the thinking ahead of last weekend as the AFL emerged from the bye period and started the run home to the finals. But then along came Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs with two of the most impressive wins of the year and once again the race for the Grand Final, let alone the premiership, is as clear as mud. The Lions came into the clash with the Cats last Thursday with a chip on their shoulder and played accordingly. Humiliated by them in last year’s preliminary final and then robbed in round two, they bossed the Cats all over the Gabba with a 44-point win that might have been even greater had they kicked straight. Joe Daniher kicked four goals, while Charlie Cameron booted three. But the scene was set by skipper Dayne Zorko, who had 24 touches but, more significantly, laid 12 tackles. The physicality sent a message; there was considerable niggle between the sides all evening, but especially in the first half when the umpires paid 37 free kicks.
The loss wasn’t catastrophic for the Cats, but did drop them to fifth place. Of more concern was that they knew the physicality was coming from Brisbane but conceded five unanswered goals in the first quarter. The game was effectively over by then. Three days later in Western Australia, it was the Bulldogs who delivered an emphatic message of their own with a 55-point win over West Coast at Optus Stadium. The match began in the most unusual circumstances, with fans locked out as they arrived after the West Australian Government introduced immediate new COVID restrictions. The Dogs had been in Perth all week in a hard quarantine and
u There is every chance one of the great playing careers of our generation will be over by the time this round is completed. All indications are that Shaun Burgoyne will pull on a jumper for the 400th and last time at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. Fittingly, he will reach the milestone in the brown and gold of Hawthorn against his old side Port Adelaide.
The skinny kid from Mallee Park in Port Lincoln made his AFL debut in round three, 2002, alongside his brother Peter. Ironically, the Power played St Kilda at Marvel Stadium (then Colonial Stadium) and they gave the Saints a decent touch-up, winning by 83 points. It was a fairly inauspicious debut for the then 19-year-old – his stats line read one mark, one kick! But it was hard to drop
They bossed the Cats all over the Gabba
were itching to play. And it showed. They swarmed the Eagles early and if not for their wayward kicking for goal – they were 2.11 at one stage – this one might also have been over at the first change. Marcus Bontempelli and Bailey Smith were fantastic through the midfield for the Dogs, while Aaron Naughton kicked four goals and took five contested marks. After a shattering post-final siren loss to Geelong last week, this was the perfect response. For the Eagles, meanwhile, it was a disastrous afternoon on both the football and financial fronts.
anyone from such a dominant team display, so he held his place for the following week’s clash with Carlton at Football Park. Alas, his stats line again was one mark, one kick and, even though Port won by 53 points, he was sent back to the SANFL. The rest, of course, is history and this week senior writer ASHLEY BROWNE traces Burgoyne’s magnificent career at two clubs.
Browne has seen his fair share of Hawthorn success in the past few decades, so where does he rate Burgoyne? In fourth place, behind (in order) Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and Lance Franklin. And Browne is torn after overlooking Cyril Rioli, Jarryd Roughead, Jordan Lewis and Josh Gibson! It’s a fair list and Burgoyne is in some pretty good company. AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 5

ONE WEEK at a TIME Melbourne beat Essendon, albeit not convincingly, to stay on top, while Port Adelaide’s strong finish took it past Sydney and into the top four at Geelong’s expense. Once again, it is shaping as a race in five for a top-four berth and, come September, an awfully good team will miss out and need to win four finals to win the flag. The absence of Richmond from the top four is likely to be a permanent feature for the rest of the season. The Tigers turned in a stinker against St Kilda at the MCG last Friday night and their final score – 2.10 (22) – was their lowest for 60 years. Losing important defenders Noah Balta and Nathan Broad to syndesmosis injuries compounded their agony. Given their dominance over the past four years, there is understandable reluctance to write the Tigers off. But six of their seven losses this year have come against teams in the eight. They’ve had injuries but are not covering them anywhere as well as before. They are looking every bit a team without much petrol left in the tank.
ONE THAT GOT AWAY: A rueful Sam Reid after the Giants let slip a golden opportunity to jump into the top eight with a loss to Hawthorn.
But it is a game they likely would have won at Giants Stadium where it was originally scheduled. COVID continues to wreak havoc with the AFL fixture. Sydney hosts West Coast at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday in the first game ever played there that doesn’t feature the hometown Cats. With borders closed in much of the country, a ‘footy frenzy’ might yet return, this time with all roads leading to Victoria.
Still, they left the door ajar for their place in the eight, but there were no takers. Essendon lost a tight one to Melbourne, but the GWS Giants really let themselves down, losing to lowly Hawthorn at the MCG by 18 points after jumping to a four-goal lead in the first term. Whether the Giants having become temporary residents of Melbourne while their home city is in lockdown played a part is unclear.
NAB AFL Rising Star DEVEN ROBERTSON BRISBANE LIONS
D
even Robertson made a one-game cameo appearance for Brisbane in the opening game of last season, but could not break into the powerful Lions midfield once the game returned from its COVID-induced hiatus. It is a different story this year and Robertson, the 22nd selection at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, has become a vital cog for the Lions. Last week against Geelong, he started on Patrick Dangerfield before switching on to Joel Selwood, keeping the Cats skipper to 13 touches while gathering 16 of his own that included two goal assists. It made him the straightforward nomination this week for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award. Originally from Manning in Western Australia, his application and endless quest for self-improvement have endeared him to everyone at Brisbane. “He has a big heart and he never stops trying. That’s why his teammates love him,” Lions coach Chris Fagan said. ASHLEY BROWNE

arlton co-captain Patrick Cripps showed his unquestionable loyalty to the club last week, re-signing for six more years. Reports are that the lengthy deal is team-friendly, with Cripps leaving money on the table to allow the Blues wriggle room in the trade period. stifled him early in the season and across 2020. “I love this club, I love the people and I love the privilege of pulling on that navy blue jumper each and every week,” Cripps said last week. “This place has become home – my decision was that simple. I couldn’t be more confident in what we are building here.” Cripps has proven to be a diamond in the rough for the Blues. He is the only player Carlton selected in the NAB AFL Draft between 2006 and 2014 who remains on the club’s list. It was a rough period for the Blues, with a few first-round picks not cutting the mustard and some were equally dubious when they selected the big-bodied midfielder from East Fremantle with pick 13 in 2013. However, Cripps quickly burst on to the scene in his second year, playing 20 games and symbolically
taking the baton from Chris Judd upon his retirement. He has had a decorated career, winning three John Nicholls Medals (2015, 2018 and 2019), making two All-Australian teams (2018 and 2019), finishing runner-up in the NAB AFL Rising Star award and winning the Leigh Matthews Trophy for the AFL Players Association MVP in 2019. The six-year contract virtually makes him a Blue for life and will take him through to age 32. He has carried a heavy load for Carlton through the midfield which has clearly taken a toll on his body, but the co-captain has been durable despite the talk of his injury issues. Cripps has not played fewer than 15 games since his rookie season and, all going to plan, will play his 150th game in 2022. And he should lead the Blues for many years to come.

once-in-28-year fixturing event takes place on Friday might when Essendon travels down the highway to play Geelong for premiership points. The Country Game, yet another brainchild of Kevin Sheedy, has been played at the MCG until now. But with GMHBA Stadium now capable of holding a decent crowd, the hope is that a few thousand Bomber fans will make the drive to the game, COVID permitting. Essendon goes into the match having won 19 of its 41 games at what was formerly Kardinia Park. The Bombers lost that 1993 clash by 32 points, but there were extenuating circumstances with James Hird (concussed after an incident that saw Cat Tim McGrath reported) and Dustin Fletcher (ankle) finishing the game on the bench and Mark Thompson (thigh), Dean Wallis (shoulder), Joe Misiti (hamstring) and Mark Mercuri (arm) playing out the game but clearly injured. There were only two interchange players in 1993 so, not surprisingly, the carnage that afternoon in front of 32,808 fans prompted Sheedy to call for expanded benches. The following season, he got his wish. The Cats were a handy team. They made the Grand Final in 1992 and again in 1994. But they missed out on finals in 1993 despite a late-season flurry in

which they beat eventual finalists North Melbourne (by 94 points), Hawthorn (82 points) and West Coast (20 points). There was widespread disappointment that these two clubs didn’t meet in September because their game earlier in the season was one of the greatest of the decade, in which Essendon spearhead Paul Salmon kicked 10.6, while Gary Ablett snr booted 14.7, with the Bombers winning by 24 points – 23.18 (156) to 19.18 (132). The 28-year gap between Geelong-Essendon games at
GMHBA Stadium falls way short of the League record. Fitzroy and Essendon waited 84 years between meetings at Victoria Park (1901-85), while the Swans-Cats preliminary final at the MCG in 2016 was the first between them at the home of football since 1934. Meanwhile, Sunday’s clash between Sydney and West Coast at GMHBA Stadium will be the first in 689 games since it opened in 1941 not to feature Geelong. The game has been transferred from the SCG because of the COVID lockdown in Sydney.

AFL RECORD SHAUN BURGOYNE | 400 GAMES
TOP OF THE CLASS
Shaun Burgoyne will join a rare group when he plays his 400th AFL game on Saturday night. The former Port Adelaide star and now Hawthorn champion is an inspiration to all. ASHLEY BROWNE
F
rom the chest up, the optics for Hawthorn supporters were so exciting. It was late October 2009 and Shaun Burgoyne, in his new brown and gold polo short, was on his way from Port Adelaide to Waverley. The 2010 AFL Record Season Guide reflected the excitement, describing him as “a multi-dimensional, match-winning utility with leadership credentials. A brilliant clearance player and damaging if allowed space to run and create, the 27-year-old can play in the midfield, as a defensive architect or a small forward …” The excitement was justified. In both 2003 and 2007 he kicked
10 AFL RECORD

39 goals, the third most for the year at the Power. In a game against Collingwood in 2008 he had 18 clearances, which remains the equal third highest in League football. He was a premiership player, an All-Australian and a genuine star of the game. From the chest down, it was a different story. Burgoyne was on crutches, having just had surgery after a PCL injury that had kept him to just nine games in 2009. Burgoyne needed a change and was openly embraced by the Hawks, especially coach Alastair Clarkson, who had been his line coach at the Power, and fitness
boss Andrew Russell, who had previously held the same position at Port. Much has been said and written since that both player and club thought it would be perhaps a three-year partnership. But as the tributes start to flow for Burgoyne ahead of what is surely the hardest-reached and most unlikely of what is now five 400-game milestones in League history, the story that emerges is that he might not have made it back at all. There were some at Port Adelaide who believed his knee was so damaged that he was best advised to retire. “They told me it was going to be significant surgery and potentially career-ending,” Burgoyne told the AFL Record. “We were under no illusions that it might fail,” said Russell, who together with club doctors Peter Bacquie and Michael Makdissi, and physiotherapist Andrew Lambart, were the quartet who, having examined Burgoyne and seen the scans, advised the Hawks it was worth making the investment. “But we knew the player. We knew his character was first-class, he’d do the work and he’d have really good people to help him,” Russell said. “It was a three-year contract and we were prepared not to play him at all in the first year in order to get two good years out of him.” He moved in with Jarryd Roughead during his first few weeks with the Hawks and the big forward was initially concerned as he watched the club’s boom recruit shuffle up and down the stairs with a crutch in one hand. “How far off is this guy?” Roughead said to himself more than once. But Burgoyne’s character was as good as advertised and it became immediately apparent that his work ethic was off the charts. Roughead and his teammates were soon smitten and one of the great Hawthorn careers kicked off against Richmond in round eight, 2010. In the end, it wasn’t his knee that delayed his start, but instead, a broken jaw suffered in his first game post his rehabilitation for VFL affiliate Box Hill. Indeed, his first game for the Hawks was the day Sam Mitchell preserved a narrow win with a last-second smother of Shane Tuck

as he was running in to kick the match-winning goal for the Tigers. There was every chance Clarkson might have been sacked had the Hawks lost, so the coach who rolled the dice to get him to the club might have only had him for one game. Instead, they have been together for 238. “It doesn’t quite seem right that out of all of us he’s the one still running around, but when you see how much work he does to get right, it’s no surprise to see he’s still going,” Roughead said. When you hear the stories of his meticulous, almost anal preparation, his ability to wring 400 games out of his body can be explained. No lollies, no chocolates and barely a sip of alcohol, just for starters. Russell tells the story that Burgoyne played the 2014 Grand Final jabbed up after suffering a syndesmosis injury the week before. After surgery, he hardly left his couch for six weeks but vowed to come back for the start of pre-season training with a lower skinfold reading than the year before. And he did. “He wanted to prove to the group that you don’t have to train to keep yourself in really good physical condition and it’s one of the reasons why he has lasted as long as he has because he is so meticulous,” Roughead said. There have been elements of good fortune as well. Through his entire career, Burgoyne has played for teams almost always in finals contention and has had just two coaches – Mark Williams at Port Adelaide and Clarkson at the Hawks. He has always been close to the Williams family, with older brother Steve his coach at the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL, but it was Mark Williams who spotted the diamond in the rough. “He worked me pretty hard, which is what I needed,” Burgoyne said. “He always believed in me, always gave me responsibility and backed me in. I wouldn’t be the player I am today without his influence.” The Clarkson relationship started at Port and has flourished ever since. It’s not just player-coach either; their families are now firm friends. “Two very passionate and very driven men,” Burgoyne said of both his coaches. “They won’t accept

mediocrity. They want excellence and they’ll pursue it every day.” That Burgoyne’s milestone game features Hawthorn and Port is no coincidence. The original plan was for it to take place against Gold Coast in Darwin, his birthplace and where his mother’s family still live. As the elder statesman of footy’s indigenous community and as the opening act of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round, it would have been an awesome occasion. Instead, an early-season ankle injury put paid to that, so a carefully managed program ensured we get to Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. “Port Adelaide has been a huge part of my wife’s (Amy) family through her father (Port champion Greg Phillips), and then me coming through the Port Magpies recruiting zone in the Eyre Peninsula, the Magpies and the Power. It’s really weird but it will be unbelievable,” Burgoyne said. There has been a strong Port Adelaide influence at the Hawks. It started with Clarkson and Burgoyne and has taken in Jarman Impey and Chad Wingard. Sadly, they won’t all be together on Saturday night with an ankle injury sidelining Impey, most likely for the rest of the season, and Wingard also set to miss with a hamstring. When Wingard was put up for trade by the Power at the end of 2018, the first and only club he really considered was Hawthorn. “One of the main reasons was I wanted to play with Shaun,” he told the club’s Golden Years podcast. Equally important for Wingard was Burgoyne’s stature as an indigenous leader in the game. Chance Bateman, Mark Williams, Lance Franklin and Cyril Rioli had brought a new dimension to Hawthorn – which had come from a long way back in that space – but Burgoyne made it an indigenous destination club. For his part, all Burgoyne ever wanted to do was follow in the footsteps of his childhood idols Michael Long and Gavin Wanganeen. “They helped create a better country for us,” Burgoyne said. “Those are the things I wanted to strive to be like. “It takes time, it takes experience and I guess as you get older you realise that’s becoming you and now that is me. players enter the game, stay in the game, have long and fulfilling careers and then transition out? “Whatever role I can play I want to help and be part of that, so the kids are coming through the same path as me, as I did before them.” As a board member of the AFL’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Council, he will be playing a role for as long as he chooses. Saturday night’s game likely won’t be the last of his career, but an occasion such as this is a time for reflection. As the Season Guide forecast in 2010, he did offer Hawthorn brilliance wherever and whenever required, as well genuine competitiveness and toughness. Heaven help whoever he tackled. “For me, he’s a mid/defender,’ Roughead said. “We were so lucky

to have a great forward line, so if he was down there it was because we were going south and we needed something to win.” The final quarter of the Kennett Curse-breaking preliminary final against Geelong in 2013 was a case in point, when Burgoyne took matters into his own hands playing as a forward and almost single-handedly steered the Hawks home. For his part, Burgoyne relished being a true utility. “It’s something I hope my teammates have enjoyed about playing alongside me, that if I played forward, midfield or back, game by game, even quarter by quarter, they were able to trust me.” Plenty of his past teammates, both from Port and Hawthorn, will do what they can to get to Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
PRELIMINARY FINAL, 2013
Certainly, his current ones are eager to be part of history. “You can’t take this for granted,” Wingard said. “I can’t see this happening in the AFL again. To put up with the stresses of the AFL for 21 years is just remarkable. We should appreciate it and what he has done for the game.” There is no danger of that happening, even if Burgoyne is a bit sheepish about all the fuss. “I’m pretty embarrassed about it when you think there have only been four other players in the 400 club,” he said. “It’s probably more a reflection of the hard work and dedication of everyone who has been involved with me along the way – coaches, doctors, fitness staff and then, to be honest, the support of my wife and kids to get me here.”

Sam Walsh continues to take his game from one level to the next. In his third AFL season, the 20-year-old has emerged as a bona fide star of the competition, such has been his remarkable consistency. Walsh put up career-best numbers when he amassed 38 touches in last weekend’s hard-fought 10-point victory over Adelaide. His best-on-ground performance included nine inside 50s, nine score involvements, a goal assist and 578 metres gained in a display highlighted by his elite hard-running ability. The 2019 NAB AFL Rising Star has been a model of consistency since his debut season, racking up 20 or more disposals in 43 of his 53 games. That has improved even further in 2021, evidenced by the fact he has hit the 30-disposal mark in nine of his 14 outings. After he was kept quiet against GWS in round 14, Walsh bounced back big time by seemingly bringing his own footy on to Marvel Stadium against the Crows. “For me, my running is going to hold me in good stead. That’s my role for the team,” he said on Fox Footy. “Last week (against the Giants) I learnt a fair bit. Once you get the attention like that, you’ve got to find ways to get open. “My teammates did a great job of helping out as well.” ANDREW SLEVISON

ANSWER MAN I was wondering how many players have been recruited over the years from the Cardinia Shire? Who do you think are the best to have played in the AFL/VFL? JOSH JOHNSON, PAKENHAM, VIC LE: There have been more than 80 players recruited from the Cardinia Shire since the early 1900s. Lang Lang was one of the first clubs in the district to have a player in the AFL/ VFL. Jim Beasley made his debut
for the Bombers in round five, 1901, and played for Geelong the following year. Pakenham and Beaconsfield have produced the most players – more than 25. Beaconsfield has produced some notable forwards, with two-time Coleman medallist Brendan Fevola, Bulldogs premiership player Tory Dickson and Carlton’s Levi Casboult. Pakenham has produced mostly defenders, such as Ray Jencke, a half-back in Hawthorn’s 1991 premiership, Collingwood’s Tyson
with LACHLAN ESSING
Goldsack, who tasted premiership success in the 2010 Grand Final replay, and Carlton’s Don McIntyre, who won a best and fairest in 1937 and a premiership in 1938. McIntyre’s brother Ken was the originator of a new finals system in 1931. Hawthorn superstar Peter Knights was from Longwarry. He was a three-time premiership player, two-time best and fairest, an Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee and part of the Hawks’ Team of the 20th Century.

u Justin Longmuir is one of two current coaches to have kicked a goal after the siren to win a match. In round 21, 2005, Fremantle was at home to St Kilda on a Friday night at Subiaco Oval and fighting to stay in the eight. At three-quarter time, the third-placed Saints were up by 16 points. In the final quarter, the Dockers fought back to be within one point with less than a minute to go. The Saints’ Justin Peckett had the ball on the half-back line when Fremantle’s Luke McPharlin ran him down from behind with a strong tackle and was given the free.
McPharlin kicked deep into the forward line and Longmuir leapt into the side of a pack to clutch a great mark 20m out. While he was preparing to take his kick, the final siren went. Surrounded by St Kilda players, Longmire calmly kicked the goal to give his side a five-point victory. And the other current coach to achieve that feat? Alastair Clarkson for North Melbourne against Melbourne in round 15, 1987. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK
TIGERS BACK LATE-SEASON BALTA u With its premiership defence looking
a fraction wobbly, Richmond will need all hands on deck in the run home to the finals. But for the short term, the Tigers will be without key defender Noah Balta, who suffered a serious ankle injury in last Friday’s shock loss to St Kilda. At first it was thought Balta, who was a crucial part of Richmond’s 2020 premiership campaign, had gone down with an ACL injury after his leg was pushed back in a tackle. But now the 21-year-old will require surgery to repair his syndesmosis which has been a familiar injury story in AFL circles this year. Brownlow medallists Lachie Neale and Patrick Dangerfield suffered similar injuries earlier this season, but both have made successful returns to the playing field. Neale was sidelined for five games, while Dangerfield missed six matches, so Tiger fans will have their fingers crossed Balta will be back sooner rather than later.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u No one can deny Essendon’s Zach Merrett (153) has been a fantastic pick this year. He’s only dipped below 100 on two occasions, but despite his consistency, the beast scores we’ve seen in the past have been few and far between. Last week against Melbourne, Merrett racked up 41 disposals, took five marks and had his tackling game on, laying eight. Many had gone away from him as a captain option, but for the four per cent (five per cent as VC) who went with him last week, the decision would have been a head-to-head winning call.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
u Kicking off the round last Thursday night, Lions skipper Dayne Zorko (142) was brilliant following his suspension and rewarded those who held him. Last Sunday, in-form midfielders Tom Mitchell (139) and Marcus Bontempelli (135) continued on their merry way, with the ‘Bont’ averaging
129 in his past five. Brodie Grundy (118) made his return after a neck injury kept him out of the bye rounds and didn’t miss a beat.

u If you are after a safe and reliable pick, move on to the next player. The ‘Package’ has enjoyed a significant role change and is playing some of the best footy of his career as a result. He has scores of 136 and 97 in his past two games and has a BE of just 27.
u The star Dee has been a massive disappointment in recent weeks, averaging just 86 on the back of 93 last week. He has dropped $100K for the season and is carrying a BE of 147. He is too good not to return to form sometime soon.
u Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, the former Pie dishes up a season-low 51. There is no longer any justification to hold, even if it means keeping a rookie on the ground for an extra week.

GWS GIANTS
DEF, $693,000 u After scoring over 90 for 10 games in a row, including eight triple figures scores, he has dropped off the past two with 84 and 57. Has a BE of 136 this week against the Eagles where he should return to his best.

u One of the best picks of the season may have done his dash as teams push towards finals. After looking like a keeper in round 10 following scores of 100, 122 and 97, he now boasts a three-game average of just 69. Has a BE of 121 and is projected to drop $37K this week.

u The star Giant is on fire, which is remarkable given his interrupted start to the year. Has scored 119 or more in four of his past five games. Has a BE of 100 and will continue to rise. ALSO CONSIDER: Marcus Bontempelli, Scott Pendlebury, Dayne Zorko
u The star defender had a ridiculous role change in his milestone game last week, which had adverse effects on his team’s ability to gain possession and in turn attack from the back half. Expect him to bounce back this week. ALSO CONSIDER: Sam Docherty, Hugh McCluggage, Andrew Gaff

u Nic Newman was omitted for round 15, but was named as the medical substitute. He came on and scored 111, rubbing salt into the wound of the 348 coaches who traded him out.
u In most traditional leagues, there are four rounds of ‘home and away’ match-ups to go before the Fantasy finals. Remember, getting in the top four gives you a double chance.
u Leo Connolly made his debut for St Kilda in an unlikely way as he was a last-minute call-up as the medical substitute. He came on to play 30 per cent of the game and scored an impressive 53.

Recognising the contribution of Country Vic, and the people who make it possible. We might be biased, but we think all the best stuff comes from the country. Generous people. Delicious produce. Innovative tech. And their footy players aren’t bad either! The Country Game Blockbuster is an opportunity for all of us to show our gratitude to country Victorians, and celebrate the incredible individuals who keep kicking goals. Crows v Lions
ROUND
16
HEAD to HEAD
HEAVY TRAFFIC: Ben Keays has plenty of company as he takes possession for the Crows in their big loss to the Lions last season.
Played 43: Adelaide Crows 24, Brisbane Lions 19. Since 2016: Adelaide Crows 3, Brisbane Lions 2. Most recent game: round 4, 2020, Adelaide Crows lost to Brisbane Lions by 37 points at the Gabba. Highest attendance: 47,279, round 10, 2002, at AAMI Stadium.

Match Preview
u A bit of uncertainty heading into this one, with Adelaide’s ability to host the Lions at Adelaide Oval in the hands of health authorities as we went to press. What we do know is that this will mark the first time in five years that these clubs won’t meet at the Gabba, but irrespective of where they play, Brisbane will enter as the strong favourite. Chris Fagan’s men were irrepressible against Geelong last week and the 44-point margin could have been considerably more if not for some errant conversion. The Lions have multiple weapons across the ground, but what became clear last week was that Daniel Rich has become a major
62 AFL RECORD
GamePreview D.indd 62
weapon with his laser-like disposal off half-back. Maybe he is the player that opposition coaches need to put more work into negating rather than the plethora of stars who run through the midfield. The Crows were good for three quarters last week against Carlton, but conceding eight goals to the battling Blues in the second term proved to be their undoing. In 14th place with just five wins, their focus probably needs to turn to next season. Adelaide can play some bright football in patches, but Brisbane is eyeing a top-two berth and won’t let up here. ASHLEY BROWNE
Highest score: 27.15 (177), round 20, 2016, at Adelaide Oval. Lowest score: 6.8 (44), round 19, 1999, at Football Park; 5.14 (44), second qualifying final, 2002, at the Gabba. Home record: 10-6 Away record: 14-13 Greatest winning margin: 138 points, round 20, 2016, at Adelaide Oval. Longest winning sequence: 7, round 2, 2013, to round 18, 2018. Most goals in a game: 8, Scott Hodges, round 6, 1992, at Football Park.
BRISBANE LIONS
Highest score: 29.15 (189), round 17, 2004, at the Gabba. Lowest score: 6.3 (39), round 20, 2016, at Adelaide Oval. Away record: 6-10 Home record: 13-14 Greatest winning margin: 141 points, round 17, 2004, at the Gabba. Longest winning sequence: 6, second qualifying final, 2002, to round 8, 2005. Most goals in a game: 7, Alastair Lynch, second qualifying final, 2002, at the Gabba; round 8, 2003, at the Gabba; Michael Voss, round 2, 2004, at AAMI Stadium.
Prediction: Brisbane Lions by 25 points

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne
Tell ‘em they’re streaming The viewing habits of sports fans have changed and it’s no different in the AFL where a game each week could be streamed live.
Y
ouTube has long been a treasure trove for fantastic footy highlights. If footy from the 1970s through to the 1990s is your thing – and for many it is – a lot of otherwise productive hours can be wasted taking a digital trip down memory lane. A grateful shout-out here to those who upload their old VHS tapes for us to enjoy. More recently, entire episodes of Seven’s Big League have started appearing on YouTube. It cannot be overstated how important these two hours of TV, from 6.30pm every Saturday, were to fostering our love for the game, especially until 1982 when South Melbourne moved to Sydney, became the Sydney Swans and had their home games televised live back into Victoria every Sunday afternoon. Before that, with the exception of the Grand Final and even then only after 1977 when it was first televised live, if you lived in Victoria and wanted to watch League football on TV, it was Seven’s Big League on Saturday night or The Winners on the ABC the following afternoon. The trip down memory lane highlights just how far footy broadcasting has come and for the past 35 years the AFL has been ahead of the curve when it comes to the broadcasting of sport on TV in this country. And now there are suggestions the League is considering taking the next leap forward and looking at carving
102 AFL RECORD
CHANGING HABITS: Host Peter Landy introduces Seven’s Big League on free-to-air TV in the 1980s; (below) the UEFA Euro 2020 championships are being streamed on Optus Sport.
out one exclusive game each week for streaming. Cord cutting is becoming a thing in the United States as Generation ‘Zedders’ and Millennials ditch free-to-air and cable broadcasters to consume all their media, including sport, through streaming apps on their various devices. Netflix leads the way, but Apple TV, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, Peacock and Paramount Plus are all starting to attract serious numbers as old-fashioned cable TV numbers flatline and, indeed, begin to decline. Streaming services have only dipped their toes into the water when it comes to live sport. Amazon Prime holds the streaming rights for Thursday night NFL games, but on a non-exclusive basis with the NFL Network and the free-to-air FOX station also having concurrent rights to the same game. But that changes from 2022, with Amazon agreeing to fork out $1 billion a year for exclusive rights to weekly Thursday night NFL games. Apart from free-to-air broadcasts in the cities of the two competing teams, the only place in the rest of the US, and perhaps even the world, you will be able to watch the game is through Amazon Prime. Will the AFL follow suit? Australians are starting to have a larger appetite for consuming live sport through streaming. The English Premier League and Euro 2020 on Optus Sport; Wimbledon, the French Open and plenty of rugby on
Stan. Amazon Prime had the recent Australian Olympic swimming trials. When Paramount Plus launches later this year, it will be the home of the Socceroos, the Matildas and the A-League. You no longer need a Foxtel subscription to watch all of its sports programs and live matches. Kayo has the lot, plus a few extras of its own for good measure. Significantly, the AFL took live games from its own app and handed those rights to Kayo. But for the biggest sporting brand in the country to hand one exclusive timeslot a week to a streaming service will be a massive game-changer. The demand for weekly Thursday night AFL games grows stronger and, while any rights fee for that timeslot would be a fraction of what the NFL receives, whether post 2024 when the rights expire or earlier, and from Amazon or a competitor, it would nevertheless provide a much-needed injection of funds to the game. Let’s not forget that COVID wiped out most of the AFL’s cash reserves last year and that the game’s financial recovery in 2021 has been delayed by a series of outbreaks around the country that have closed stadiums and slashed crowd sizes. Thursday night footy every week isn’t for everyone. But if the dollars stack up, the AFL will be ready to make what will be a significant leap into the future. And all you will need is decent wi-fi.
