EDITOR’S LETTER

ydney’s 19-point win over the Western Bulldogs last Sunday was the latest in a long list of impressive performances by John Longmire’s men this season. The Swans have also beaten Brisbane, Richmond, Geelong and West Coast, teams that, like the Bulldogs, were considered to be in premiership contention at the time. Their speed and skill, lockdown defence and multiple scoring options (Lance Franklin and Tom Papley kicked just one goal between them last week) makes them a scary proposition to plan against. So, it begs the question whether the sixth-placed Swans should also be regarded as a premiership fancy? Their run home to the finals includes only one team currently in the eight – Fremantle – and leaves them well placed if those above them stumble. And as the demands of the season take their toll, that can’t be discounted. Brisbane, for example, has lost star forward Eric Hipwood with an ACL injury for the rest of the season.

The Swans will effectively be South Melbourne for the rest of the season

u For some clubs, the mid-season bye has been a millstone around their neck. But for St Kilda, the 2021 season is proving the exact opposite. The Saints’ season looked like it was running off the rails leading into their scheduled break in round 14. Four losses in the previous five games, a mounting injury list, some questions over their recruiting spree post 2019 and

The Swans sported their South Melbourne heritage jumpers against the Bulldogs and were visited the day before the game by legends from the Lakeside Oval, Bob Skilton and Peter Bedford. They looked fantastic. And their old South Melbourne fan base made plenty of noise. They’re going to need them to keep turning up and to keep making some noise because the Swans will effectively be South Melbourne for the rest of the home and away season, with Sydney’s growing COVID crisis meaning both they and the GWS Giants are set to be based in Victoria. The hubs might be on their way back as the AFL investigates

even an internal review put St Kilda in the spotlight. While the review was not as thorough as what Carlton is undergoing, it led to some honesty sessions with coach Brett Ratten, senior players and officials laying bare some of their frustrations. Remember, this was a side that broke a long finals drought in 2020, winning their first final since 2010 and

how to bring the families of players, coaches and officials to Victoria for at least the next six weeks. The Swans have enjoyed a terrific season and the Giants are hanging in there. But the degree of difficulty they both face until the end of the season is now significant. Their return Sydney derby, which was supposed to take place at Giants Stadium, will be played on Saturday at Mars Stadium in Ballarat. The Lions missed Hipwood against St Kilda last week and the game slipped away from them in the second half against a tight and disciplined Saints backline.

knocking over the Western Bulldogs in the process. After serving up some horrendous losses earlier in the season, St Kilda has taken down two massive scalps over the past three weeks – Richmond by 40 points in round 15 and the Brisbane Lions by 32 points at Metricon Stadium last Saturday night. It’s no coincidence that when big men Paddy Ryder

and Rowan Marshall are operating in tandem, the Saints are finding their winning ways. They have played together six times this year for five wins and a loss to Geelong in round nine that was self-inflicted. Starting with a crucial clash with Port Adelaide this week, we will watch the Saints’ run home with interest. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME Brisbane’s loss threw another wrinkle into an absorbing season. The Lions and the Bulldogs were all the rage heading into the weekend, but both lost and handed premiership favouritism back to Melbourne. The Demons, losers of three of their previous six games, reasserted themselves in emphatic fashion with a 31-point win over Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. They’re now a game clear back on top, but with the Bulldogs (MCG), West Coast and Geelong (both away) still to come, they’re no certainty to remain there. Fremantle is in the eight after a thumping win over Hawthorn, the first in 11 attempts against the Hawks in Launceston. But the Giants missed a golden opportunity to join them with a one-point loss to Gold Coast at Ballarat. Leon Cameron’s men are the most enigmatic in the competition. Good enough to beat Melbourne at the MCG, but a draw against North Melbourne and losses to Hawthorn and now the Suns will surely come back to haunt them later in the year.

PUMPED: Christian Petracca and the Demons have reasserted themselves as premiership favourites after their emphatic win over the Power last week.

Richmond is now 12th on the ladder and that is not a misprint. The excitement over Jack Riewoldt’s 700th goal right on half-time last Sunday against Collingwood fizzled out badly in the final term as the Magpies kicked seven goals to one to win by 16 points to hand Robert Harvey his first win as interim coach. Injuries have taken their toll on the Tigers and they won’t get any reinforcements back for Friday

night against Brisbane for what will be Riewoldt’s 300th game. But they’re not getting enough from those who are out there and they laid just three tackles in the final stanza against the Pies. Time is running out for Richmond, but it is a big game as well for the Lions, who will be seeking to end a nine-game losing streak at the MCG that stretches back to 2015.

NAB AFL Rising Star HOT FIELD CHASING 2021 HONOUR

G

WS Giants midfielder Tom Green remains the favourite for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award through 16 rounds. In 14 games in 2021 – he played two in his debut season last year – he has averaged 20.4 disposals (10.3 contested) and is rated above average by Champion Data in contested-possession rate (48.8 per cent), ground ball gets (7.4), stoppage clearances (3.2), shots at goal (1.1) and marks inside 50 (4.4). As the Giants look to shed their ‘Ferrari’ reputation and become a more dogged, blue-collar outfit, Green is Exhibit A. He also contrasts greatly with Melbourne’s Luke Jackson, who is second favourite. The emerging ruckman features prominently for hit-out wins (39.7 per cent), hit-outs to advantage (28.9) and stoppage clearances (0.9). He was the third selection at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft and is starting to live up to the billing. Others in the running for the award include fellow Demon James Jordon, Essendon’s Nik Cox and Adelaide’s Lachlan Sholl. ASHLEY BROWNE

T

he Yeppoon Swans in Central Queensland were celebrating another piece of football history last weekend. The Swans kicked 42.21 to 1.0 to trounce Gladstone by 267 points and secure its 100th consecutive victory – a first in Australian Football. They achieved a history-making 89th straight victory when they downed the Boyne Island Tannum Sands Saints in the AFL Capricornia Grand Final at Swan Park at the end of 2020. The season was cut short due to COVID-19 and consisted of a 10-round season plus finals. The previous national record had stood for 44 years, with former Adelaide Hills team Heathfield-Aldgate United winning 88 consecutive games between 1971-76. The Swans haven’t lost an A-grade game since mid-2015 and clinched their sixth straight premiership in the club’s 40th year in the first Grand Final played at their Swan Park home in Yeppoon before a crowd of more than 3000. Christian Burgess is in his first year as playing coach after making his mark in his first season at the club in 2020. Previously, Mark Wallin coached the Swans for seven seasons, including the record 89 wins in a row and six premierships, while his son

Matt has been captain for the entire duration. Matt Wallin, Leigh Cossens, Nathan Milburn, Michael Gallagher and Shaun Connor have played in all six premierships. Mark Wallin has since taken on the role of women’s coach in 2021 and his experience and knowhow has been welcomed.

Yeppoon is a coastal town and region with a population of about 20,000, located about 650km north of Brisbane. AFL Capricornia is a six-club competition comprising of Yeppoon, three teams from the Rockhampton area and one each from Gladstone and the Boyne Island-Tannum Sands.

JACK’S A RIPPER

JACK RIEWOLDT | 300 GAMES | 700 GOALS On Friday night at the MCG, Jack Riewoldt joins Kevin Bartlett, Jack Dyer and Francis Bourke as the only Richmond players in the 300-game club. On the eve of the milestone, he spoke to AFL Record senior writer ASHLEY BROWNE. drafted the same year as us, but they were maybe 20kg lighter than us. It was supposed to be a recovery run, but I was trying so hard not to get lapped with our parents watching us for the first time. Shane and I have been here for 15 years and we tell stories to the players who are now just 18 or 19 and it’s amazing just how quickly it has gone.

Three hundred games. What’s the secret? u The secret? It helps playing three or four finals every year for the last few years. You can accumulate an extra season like Joel Selwood did and he started around the same time as me. I’ve been extremely lucky with injuries and was lucky to play a few games early in my career as a young kid in a team that wasn’t as successful as it is now.

There is a significant age gap between you and the younger players. How do you find it talking to them? u You try to find a connection, but it is hard. One thing I do find is trying to take as many guys as you can along the journey. Your goal as a leader is to try and get them to that 100-150-game stage. You want to speed up the process from going from a good player to a really great player and that’s what we try to get across to the younger kids.

A YOUNG JACK RIEWOLDT

2017 GRAND FINAL

How long did it take you to understand your body and learn how to get it right from week to week? u It’s the one thing I’ve been pretty diligent with. I’m not an explosive athlete. I have been very lucky with injuries, just a couple of knee injuries and some concussions. I don’t run so quickly (laughs), so you’re less likely to get a soft-tissue injury. But I have been very lucky and well supported by management and strength programs and I’ve always been able to complete most pre-seasons. What were the early days like for you at Richmond? u An early memory was a running session at Gosch’s Paddock. I’m not the world’s greatest endurance athlete, but I was there with Dan Connors who was similar to me. We nearly got lapped by Shane Edwards and Andrew Collins who were

10  AFL RECORD

AR18 p10-12 Feature.indd 10

WITH DAUGHTER POPPY, 2019 GRAND FINAL

WITH DAMIEN HARDWICK, 2020 GRAND FINAL

And what are your first memories of meeting ‘Dimma’ (Damien Hardwick)? u When you have a change of coach or conditioning person, you always wonder what the next pre-season will be like. We had our first ever catch-up with Dimma and he went through a presentation about what

SEN.com.au

12/7/21 3:26 pm

he stood for and what we were going to stand for as a group and a few little tactical things. It was stern, but also was the first time he was trying to lead and empower us, but I remember thinking, ‘holy crap, pre-season’s going to be hard’. He might have been trying to scare us, but he has been great. Did you ever get to the stage in around 2015 or 2016 when you thought premiership success at Richmond just might not happen? u I remember sitting with Trent Cotchin at a café in Essendon thinking this journey wouldn’t be for us and we wouldn’t be the ones to win a premiership, but we needed to put in the foundations for the next group. It would be a case of taking five steps backwards so the next group could take 10 steps forward. It was about going down a different path, but we just didn’t think it would happen so quickly for us in 2017.

It is a bloody great job ... it’s so much fun JACK RIEWOLDT

Can you rank the three flags you have been part of? u They’re all different. 2017 was the drought-breaking flag and you couldn’t recreate the scenes that followed that. The pure emotion and

the connection was fuelled by pure happiness and I guess relief for the supporters. And some retribution. 2019 was the acknowledgement that 2017 wasn’t a one-off. Last year was a weird one to win away from home in a completely different environment, but it was the first one where we were really challenged in a Grand Final late in the game. You’ve played as a forward the entire time. How different is life for a forward and has the AFL made it easier or more difficult for you with its various changes to rules and interpretations? u Every forward is different and every forward line functions differently. It’s more of an aerobic game now. It went to a power game for a while and now back to an aerobic game, but it’s about finding your own strengths. My game hasn’t changed all that much, just being able to adapt to having to defend more. The seasons start and the offences play with flair and have big scores on their minds, but come the back end of the season and the finals, it comes down to contests and trying to win or halve them and that’s what we call finals football.

The best players you’ve seen at the club? u Dustin Martin is the best player I’ve seen. Clearly. Closely followed by Alex Rance. Have you had a better career than cousin Nick? u ‘Rooey’ has got me covered. There’s so much weight put on premierships, and I can understand it from a certain point of view. But I think arguably he is in the top 10 players who have played the game and I am nowhere near that. It is hard when you idolise someone to think you’ve had the better career. He has been a great support and a great mechanism for me to lean on, especially the last few years after he has left the game. He’s been my No. 1 supporter.

COUSIN NICK RIEWOLDT’S FINAL GAME

You’re closer to the end than the start, so what would you like to get out of the remainder of your career? u Just the satisfaction of coming to work every day. Game-days and the wins are just the cream on the top, but it’s the fundamentals and the nitty-gritty of coming to work every day with a bunch of guys I have a bond with and have had with for a long time. That gives me the appetite to keep playing football. It is a bloody great job, and yes there are some perks, but it’s so much fun. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  11

AFL RECORD JACK RIEWOLDT | 300 GAMES

When do you think you were at your peak as a player? u My most complete year was probably 2018. I had a good year in 2015 and I won the Coleman (Medal) in 2010 and kicked the most goals I have in a season (78), but the one thing for me is that I have been fairly consistent over the years. One of my strengths is to have been consistent – one or two goals a game and 12 to 15 touches is probably my bread and butter. You’re very good at the media. Is that what you’ll do post-footy? u AFL 360 has been the big one for me and now special comments on games is a path I’ve gone down. But also, the leadership space and getting involved in people pushing themselves. I’ve been on that journey and that has opened doors I didn’t think I would have. I’m also really passionate about Tassie footy and the push for it to hopefully get its own team. It’s a cause a lot of expatriate Tasmanian footy people are getting behind, but some of you might have to one day roll up your sleeves and get back there to make it happen. u I love going home. (Wife) Carli has family there. Hobart has evolved so much in the last 15 years since

12  AFL RECORD

AR18 p10-12 Feature.indd 12

CELEBRATING 700 CAREER GOALS, ROUND 17, 2021

I stopped living there that I just know that there is an absolute passion and almost a need for it to be down there in Tassie and it’s something you speculate about. If it was to eventuate, I don’t think attracting and retaining players there would be a problem. You have been coming to work at the Richmond footy club for the past 15 years. Do you still pinch yourself when you walk through these doors? u It’s moments like this that you do reflect. There’s only four of us who have played 300 games here and I’m a bit embarrassed to have my name next to theirs. These are the stories on the wall at this football club, their stories are on the walls and to be next to them is very humbling. There are ups and downs coming into a footy club and you have to to navigate them and not ride the rollercoaster that the media do and the supporters do as well. What would you say now to the 18-year-old, just-drafted Jack Riewoldt? u Don’t jump the fence when the media are out the front waiting for you! Face the media when you’ve done something wrong, but just have fun.

A LIFE CHANGED FOREVER

Brett Ratten is leading a campaign to get people to ‘band together’ to promote safer roads.

HEART-BROKEN: St Kilda coach Brett Ratten reflects on son Cooper’s tragic death.

I

t was a foggy winter night in August 2015. Hawthorn assistant coach Brett Ratten was sound asleep having helped guide the Hawks to victory against Geelong earlier that night. His son Cooper had been staying at Yarra Glen in Melbourne’s outer east after the local under-18s side had qualified for finals – the first time the team had done so in about 12 years, according to Ratten. Cooper was a proud member of the team. At 5.15am, Ratten heard a knock on the door. It was a moment that would change his life forever. “There was a police officer there. I thought, ‘Well what’s going on?’” he said.

14  AFL RECORD

Cooper had been in a car accident, and within minutes of the police officer arriving at Ratten’s door, Cooper passed away at the hands of a speeding driver. His tragic death impacted every person in his life – his friends, his family, his club, his entire community. “It’s changed our life forever … the ripple effect that it has not just on me, but my kids, my wife, nephews, nieces, grandparents, the list goes on … we just wish we could be with him,” Ratten, now senior coach at St Kilda, said. And that’s exactly why Ratten is calling on everyone to band together for safer roads this TAC and AFL Victoria Road Safety Round. “I’m wearing my band for Cooper, we miss him, not just me but my whole

We miss him, not just me but my whole family BRETT RATTEN

family. You know, there will be many people who wear the band for someone special, and we’re all wearing it for you Coop,” Ratten said. This weekend, AFL Victoria, TAC and Ratten are inviting you to wear a blue armband and share your reason for championing the cause. Perhaps it’s for someone who is here, your mum, your sister, your son, or your whole team, or perhaps it’s for someone who is no longer with us. Join us and help eliminate deaths and serious injuries in Victoria so stories like Cooper’s never have to be experienced or read about again. Adams in action has been few and far between for Collingwood fans in 2021. The Magpies vice-captain has had to deal with a knee issue this year and has been able to manage only eight games – but whenever he plays, he gives more than his all. Adams returned to the senior side in round 15 and has put together three stellar weeks of football, highlighted by his efforts in last Sunday’s win over Richmond at the MCG. The bullocking midfielder racked up 31 disposals and had 10 clearances (five centre clearances) in a near best-on-ground performance, where he teamed up with Jordan De Goey, Scott Pendlebury and Jack Crisp around the ball. Adams laid 10 tackles, as is his want on a regular basis, while providing eight score involvements, six inside 50s and finishing with a goal. His performance was praised by former Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd, who has put Adams’ name forward to succeed Pendlebury as the Pies’ captain. “He’s a player you want to play with,” Lloyd said on AFL.com.au. “I would love to run out with Taylor Adams, so much so that at 27 years of age, 28 next year, I’d have him the captain of the Collingwood Football Club. “They’re a better side whenever he plays. He’s a heart-and-soul, heartbeat player for Collingwood.” ANDREW SLEVISON

MAX GAWN A GIANT OF THE GAME

Demon always striving for excellence u Max Gawn is a giant of the game,

both figuratively and literally. At 208cm, the star Melbourne ruckman and captain is not only an imposing figure, he is arguably the game’s pre-eminent big man. Since 2016, he has missed the All-Australian team just once, in 2017 when injuries kept him to just 13 games. He is a much-loved and respected figure at Melbourne where he has won the Demons’ best and fairest award twice (2018, 2019) and has been captain since 2020. Gawn’s performances over recent years speak volumes for the bearded

20  AFL RECORD

Demon, but it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the product of local club Ormond. Selected with pick No. 34 at the 2009 National Draft, Gawn was injured for much of his rookie season in 2010 before making his debut in round 11, 2011, going on to play four games. But disaster struck just before Christmas of 2011 when he injured his knee at training and was forced to miss the entire 2012 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Gawn finally made it back in 2013 (13 games) and 2014 (nine games), but questions remained: did he

have the hunger and desire to be a successful AFL player? Perhaps the Sliding Doors moment came in 2015. Gawn, who played his early years wearing No. 37 (Jim Stynes’ original number), was given the guernsey the Irish star later made famous – No. 11. It meant so much to Gawn who’d been mentored by Stynes before his passing in early 2012. By 2016, Gawn was the No. 1 ruckman in the AFL and earned his first All-Australian blazer with more to follow in 2018, 2019 and 2020. With efforts like that, Gawn is a true sustained performer.

CLOSE TO THEIR HEART: Fraser Rosman and his mother Trudy are flanked by Oskar Baker and Christian Petracca; (inset) a young Baker with his late mother Trudie.

STANDING FOR MUM The 2021 Pink Lady Match takes on a special meaning for two young Demons.

T

his year’s Pink Lady Match is personal for Melbourne players Fraser Rosman and Oskar Baker, given their mums Trudy and Trudie were diagnosed with breast cancer. Trudy and Fraser have been a team of two for a long time and last year when Trudy was diagnosed with breast cancer, the pair knew they needed a COVID game-plan. Tapping into BCNA’s online resources for information and support, Trudy went to chemotherapy alone while Fraser continued his Year 12 studies and trained at night to reduce exposure to other people when his mum’s immunity was compromised.

22  AFL RECORD

He turned to me and said ‘Mum, we did it’ FRASER ROSMAN’S MOTHER TRUDY

It was a long and challenging year for both of them under lockdown conditions and Fraser was his mum’s cheer squad when the physical and mental effects of treatment threatened to overwhelm her. The year finished on a high when Trudy completed her treatment and Fraser was selected in the NAB AFL Draft. She recalls the moment the two of them sat at home watching the draft on TV. “When his name called out (at No. 34), it was a big full stop to a horrible year. We were jumping up and down crying, the phone lit up, the doorbell started to ring and he turned to me and said ‘Mum, we did it!’” she said. Trudy says her son is loving being a part of Melbourne and the club environment – now they are looking forward to good times ahead for both of them. “He helped me get through some stuff that he shouldn’t at his age, I can’t wait to see him have his moment,” she said. Oskar Baker also knows the impact that a breast cancer diagnosis can have

on a family – his nan and aunt are both survivors, his mum Trudie lost her life to the disease in 2017 just months before he fulfilled his dream of being drafted to the AFL. Oskar’s final promise to his much-loved mum was that she would inspire him to make it. He wore a black armband in his first match in 2019 and every game since in honour of Trudie. The two young Demons know that a footy club requires more than just those on the field and they are grateful for the support of star midfielder Christian Petracca off it. Breast Cancer Network Australia provides its free services to ensure everyone with a diagnosis has access to a team of support at every stage. Buying a place in the virtual Pink Lady will help do that. The Field of Women is an iconic event where in a pre-COVID world thousands of people in pink ponchos – and a few in blue – would form the Pink Lady in the middle of the MCG. This year BCNA is inviting fans to stand on the ’G virtually and dedicate a place to someone they know who might be affected by breast cancer.

MATCH−2021 Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is the peak national consumer organisation for Australians affected by breast cancer. BCNA supports, informs and connects Australians affected by breast cancer. In 2021, it is estimated that 20,030 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer, which means 55 Australians will be told they have breast cancer everyday.

BCNA works to provide information, support, connection and voice for all Australians affected by breast cancer. Please help us raise vital funds to continue to provide our free information, support and services.

Left-footer ‘Buddy’ Franklin is poised to reach 1000 career goals. Who are some of the best left-foot goalkickers we’ve had? JEAN READ, BOX HILL, VIC MG: There have been some exciting left-footers play the game, such as Brownlow medallists Allan Ruthven and Bob Skilton. In round 11, 1944, Fitzroy’s Ruthven kicked nine goals against Geelong at the Brunswick St Oval, while Skilton’s best effort was an eight-goal haul for South Melbourne against Geelong at the Lake Oval in round 11, 1959. Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin has kicked the most career goals for a left-footer – 977 for Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans since his debut in 2005. He is followed by Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd (926, 1995-2009) and Franklin’s former Hawthorn teammate Jarryd Roughead (578, 2005-19). There’s been three cases of left-footers kicking 13 goals in a game. In round 13, 1991, at the WACA in Perth, West Coast’s

Peter Sumich booted 13.3 against Footscray to help the Eagles to an 118-point win. Lloyd, then aged just 20, kicked 13.4 against the Sydney Swans at the MCG in round three, 1999. He had 26 disposals and took 14 marks. Franklin also kicked 13.4, for Hawthorn against North Melbourne, in round 10, 2012, in Launceston, as the Hawks won by 115 points.

If you can assist, contact Col Hutchinson at col.hutchinson@afl.com.au. (Essendon 1951-52), Bill Snell (Essendon 1950-52), Trevor Lloyd (Fitzroy 1971-75), Glenn Robertson (Fitzroy 1972-76), Vin Williams (Fitzroy 1952-59), Tony Barnes (Melbourne 1980-81), Robert McKenzie

u North Adelaide’s Ken Farmer was one of Australian Football’s greatest forwards. He had a phenomenal record after debuting in the SANFL in 1929, aged 18, reaching the 100-goal milestone in 11 consecutive seasons from 1930-40. He played 224 games for the Roosters up until 1941, kicking 1419 goals. One of his finest moments came in round 12, 1940, when he kicked 23.6 in his team’s 26.11 (167) in a home game against West Torrens. North had a definite plan to kick the ball to Farmer where he out-marked two, and sometimes more, opponents. He kicked all four of the Roosters’ goals in the opening quarter and by half-time had nine of his team’s 10 goals. At three-quarter time, his tally was 14. In the final quarter, North concentrated on giving Farmer scoring opportunities and he responded by booting nine of his team’s 10 goals for the term. After his 17th goal, a spectator ran off with the ball but was halted by another spectator and a fight followed. After the match, the champion forward was carried from the ground and officials made ‘complimentary’ speeches in the clubrooms. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK

LIONS LICK THEIR WOUNDS

u The Brisbane Lions were

dealt a couple of major blows last weekend as we head to the business end of the season. A shock 32-point loss to St Kilda was compounded by a serious knee injury to young key forward Eric Hipwood. The 23-year-old had to be assisted from Metricon Stadium during the opening quarter after landing awkwardly in a marking contest. He has suffered a ruptured ACL, which means his season – and a fair chunk of 2022 – is over. Hipwood will join another young gun, Cam Rayner, on the sidelines after he injured his knee at the same venue in a pre-season game. The Lions will be praying star recruit Joe Daniher can carry the bulk of the heavy lifting up forward given Hipwood has kicked 26 goals in 16 games this year. It wasn’t a good weekend for several players with Port Adelaide’s Zak Butters, Hawthorn defender Changkuoth Jiath and Gold Coast’s Hugh Greenwood also suffering knee injuries.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u What a season Touk Miller (155) is putting together. With an average of 122.5, he’s the highest-averaging player in the AFL by more than five points a game. The 25-year-old has incredible work rate, filling the stats sheet across the board, including the all-important tackles for the +4. Last Sunday he finished with 14, accounting for 56 points of his score. Miller has his hand up as the Fantasy Draft bargain of the year as his ADP (average draft pick) was 58, placing him outside the first 30 selected midfielders.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

u The big names stepped up in round 17 with Christian Petracca (155) showing he’s the premier midfielder for the Dees, averaging 124 in his past five games. Brodie Grundy (139) showed exactly why he’s referred to as the ‘Ruck Pig’, while Jack Steele (138) posted his 13th Fantasy ton of the season. Since returning from injury, Taylor Adams (131) hasn’t missed a beat, scoring triple figures in his past three.

u If I haven’t convinced you already, it is time to swallow your pride and just do it before his price goes out of reach. ‘De Goat’ keeps getting it done, backing up his 124 from a fortnight ago with 117. He has three 100s in a row and four out of five.

u The underrated Lion has been a great unique pick for his five per cent of coaches, but on the rare occasions he has been under par, it can feel a lonely place. He was below his best last week with just 84, but he has a dream run of match-ups ahead.

u Was in career-best touch between rounds 11 and 15 where he scored 106, 113 and 119, but that form has dried up with just 68 and 54 in his past two. He has a tough match-up against the Swans this week, which puts him on the block.

u The Giants running machine was subbed off last week with a nasty head knock after playing just 29 per cent of the game for a score of 28. Has been sensational after his interrupted start to the season, but doubtlingers about his immediate future.

u It’s time to jump on the under-priced ball magnet after his 116 gave him a three-game average of 111. The Lions have the best match-ups over the next few weeks and the Brownlow medallist will take full advantage. ALSO CONSIDER: Jake Stringer, Brodie Grundy, Christian Petracca

u It’s not that coaches have lost faith in the ball magnet, who has dropped under 100 for two games in a row, it’s more about the chance to cash him in to take advantage of money-generating opportunities and help get rookies off the ground. ALSO CONSIDER: Ben Keays, Clayton Oliver, Brad Crouch

u The third and final round of DPPs were added to the game this week. While few players adding a position are game-changers, Lachlan Bramble’s FWD status is handy.

Match Preview

u The history books suggest that not even the comforts of home will help Adelaide here, even if the visitors are one of the flakiest teams in the competition. West Coast has saluted in its past four meetings with the Crows and has won eight from 10 at Adelaide Oval. Adelaide has been far more competitive in 2021 than last year, but undid some of that with a truly lamentable performance last week against Essendon, in which it kicked just 2.9 – the lowest score in club history. Not all of that can be sheeted home to the absence of Taylor Walker, who missed with neck and chest injuries. The Crows will be desperate to have him

WEST COAST EAGLES back against a backline that features Jeremy McGovern, Tom Barrass and Shannon Hurn. With St Kilda and Essendon playing well and Richmond – somehow – still in contention, West Coast must take care of business here. Nic Naitanui will never need motivation up against Reilly O’Brien, but Tim Kelly, Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff, Elliot Yeo and Dom Sheed must also play well. The Crows look good when they get some outside run going, but West Coast has the more trustworthy spine and forwards and should win again at what might be its home away from home. ASHLEY BROWNE

Highest score: 29.13 (187), round 4, 2000, at the WACA. Lowest score: 4.7 (31), round 14, 1997, at Football Park. Away record: 11-15 Home record: 18-6 Greatest winning margin: 135 points, round 19, 1995, at Subiaco Oval. Longest winning sequence: 5, second preliminary final, 2005, to round 13, 2007. Most goals in a game: 14, Scott Cummings, round 4, 2000, at the WACA.

Prediction: West Coast by Eagles 14 points

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

The long queue for ‘Clarko’ Outgoing Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson will have no shortage of offers come the end of 2022.

W

hat will Alastair Clarkson do next? Everyone has their theory about what the master coach will do when he finishes up at Hawthorn at the end of next year after 18 seasons and passes the baton to Sam Mitchell.

COACH OF COLLINGWOOD u Not sure this will be happening.

Clarkson has made it clear he wants to see out his contract, which finishes at the end of next year. He made a compelling case about wanting to spend more time with family, friends, at his farm and on his health and fitness. The other factor to consider when it comes to Clarkson and Collingwood is that Graham Wright is that club’s relatively new general manager of football, having held that job at the Hawks before then. Whether they had a major dust-up last year or just grew tired of each other is unclear, but suggestions are that neither would be in any rush to work with each other.

COACH OF CARLTON u How Carlton fans wish this would be

so and to have Clarkson join a trophy cabinet of imported big-name coaches that includes Ron Barassi, David Parkin, Denis Pagan and Mick Malthouse. Clarkson’s long-time fitness coach Andrew Russell is now at the Blues, so he already has a familiar face there, but the focus at Carlton is on the football department review now taking place. If current senior coach David Teague gets tipped out, then perhaps this one might have some legs.

102  AFL RECORD

THUMBS UP: What’s next for Alastair Clarkson is anyone’s guess.

COACH OF … SOMEONE ELSE

His phone has probably already gone into meltdown

u Any underperforming coach in the next few years will be shifting nervously in their seats and Clarkson’s name will be linked to every vacancy there is. Some that come to mind are Melbourne, where he played in the mid-1990s and still has many friends, and St Kilda where its Moorabbin home base is only a short drive from where he lives. What about the Gold Coast? Clarkson would also need to be comfortable with not just coaching the team but being the No. 1 salesman for the code in a developing market. And having moved on from Jeff Kennett, he’d be answerable to the equally outspoken Tony Cochrane. That’s frying pan into the fire sort of stuff.

Every media outlet in Australia will be battling for his services. A match-day special commentator? Not so sure. Perhaps on a show such as On The Couch would play to his strengths because he could talk tactics, structures and on-field matters.

OTHER SPORTS u Before COVID, Clarkson led the

AFL in frequent flyer points with his never-ending quest for knowledge from other sports around the world. He has become a veritable encyclopedia of elite-level sport and so much of what he has learned can be applied to sports other than footy. Could he be tempted by a high-performance job in another sport? Imagine a consulting position with the AIS or the Australian Sports Commission. How about a mentoring role with Olympic athletes and coaches?

THE AFL

CORPORATE LIFE/PUBLIC LIFE

u Some would say he’s already

u Clarkson’s success with the Hawks

an unpaid senior adviser to Gillon McLachlan with his knack for influencing how the game is played and umpired. McLachlan is looking to replace outgoing footy boss Steve Hocking and is considering restructuring the role, so Clarkson can certainly expect a phone call to see whether there is any part of working at AFL House that might pique his interest.

THE MEDIA u James Henderson is Clarkson’s

manager and his phone has probably already gone into meltdown.

and his reputation in the game will make him an in-demand figure in any field of endeavours. He will be able to name his own price on the speaking circuit, while start-ups and company boards will be queuing outside his door. He has a great record of public service (Kokoda awareness and bushfire relief to name just two) and all sorts of causes will seek his endorsement and involvement. And should he choose to write his biography, the advance alone will likely set a record for an Australian sports identity.

GOOD

GOODER

Playing footy is good. Playing in gear made for you? That’s gooder.

SUBMIT YOUR SUGGESTION

When someone suggested that local women’s teams were running around wearing men’s hand-me-downs, we thought; that’s not good for footy! That’s why Toyota is giving 100 grassroots clubs around the country brand new uniforms designed specifically for women, so they can play with pride and confidence. At Toyota, we’re determined to make the game better for the entire footy community, and we need your help. So whether you play it, coach it, watch it or just love it, we want to hear your suggestions. Visit toyota.com.au/gooder to share your ideas and we’ll make the best ones happen. Now that’s Good for Footy!
