EDITOR’S LETTER
his has been a season marked by chaos and another exercise in crisis management for the AFL. And there was no bigger crisis than that faced by Sydney and the GWS Giants when in the hour before their derby clash at Metricon Stadium last Sunday, both clubs had to make a raft of changes after players were reclassified as Tier 2 contacts after attending the Wallabies-France rugby test last week in Melbourne. Callum Mills, Harry Cunningham and Colin O’Riordan dropped out of the Swans team, while Toby Greene and Matt de Boer were forced to withdraw from the Giants. Non-selected players as well as staffers from both clubs were also forced to quarantine. James Rowbottom and Dylan Stephens were inserted into the Swans team, while Ben Ronke was named as the medical sub, after the trio had played a reserves game the day before. The Swans then spotted the Giants a 35-point lead before slamming on nine unanswered goals en route to a stirring 26-point win that cemented their place in u Football fans around the country deserve a massive pat on the back for remaining loyal to their clubs and patient with the AFL for keeping the season going. Normally, the AFL is a soft target for disgruntled fans, but it seems the harsh lessons of the past 20 months have shed the League in a new light. With lockdowns in the country’s two largest cities –
It was the final act of a crazy weekend
Sydney and Melbourne – and several state borders closed, the AFL is busily pulling rabbits out of the hat. As this edition of the Record went to print on late Monday afternoon, we weren’t sure when Victoria was coming out of its five-day lockdown that was due to end at midnight on Tuesday. With the prospect of no games in Sydney for the next few weeks, the AFL is trying to
the top six and left coach John Longmire overcome with emotion at the final siren. “It was just an unbelievable effort when you consider that we probably had enough reasons just to, if we wanted to, make the choice to not keep going,” Longmire said. “We’ve been away for a month … lost staff … don’t have one fitness guy … and you lose three players before the game. “To say it was a good win would be an understatement.” It was the final act of a crazy weekend, in which teams and games were abruptly moved from Victoria. The Swans and Giants had been slated for Ballarat’s Mars Stadium, while the Richmond-Brisbane and North Melbourne-Essendon games were moved from Melbourne to
reunite families of the Swans and Giants in Queensland where both clubs are now based. Adding to the complicated fixturing and travel arrangements was the news that came through last weekend about exposure sites in Melbourne. The Carlton-Geelong game at the MCG on July 10 saw several fans test positive for COVID, while multiple AFL players and
club staff members attended the Wallabies-France rugby test on July 13 – and that venue (AAMI Park) has since been listed as an exposure site. The AFL has done well to solve short-term fixturing issues, but now it faces the bigger picture of finals and where the Grand Final will be played. A packed MCG? Highly unlikely at this stage. ONE WEEK at a TIME Metricon Stadium which, in shades of last season, hosted four games over the weekend, including a Sunday double-header. Hawk Conor Nash had to withdraw from the game against the Demons as a precaution after he had been at the rugby, while Bulldog star Josh Dunkley, having just returned from a two-month shoulder injury, won’t play this week as he serves a 14-day quarantine after he bought a coffee from an exposure site. And for the foreseeable future, we are back to no fans at games in Victoria. But the show must go on, although for the rest of 2021 it will be without the game’s biggest star. Dustin Martin suffered a kidney injury last week against Brisbane and will be out for the remainder of the season. It makes Richmond’s quest for a third straight flag even more unlikely, despite a slashing win over Brisbane last week. While coach Damien Hardwick is from the ‘replace a soldier with another’ school, he might need a battalion to fill the void of the Brownlow medallist and three-time Norm Smith Medal winner.
OUT FOR THE SEASON: Richmond’s hopes of a third straight premiership were dealt a severe blow with the serious injury to champion Dustin Martin.
He’s a huge absentee in a massive game for the Tigers in the second of their Grand Final rematches against Geelong. The Cats won the round eight game by 63 points in mesmerising fashion and will start favourites here again. But they are right to feel aggrieved that their home game hasn’t been moved from the MCG back to GMHBA Stadium, given there will be no fans. Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs meet at the MCG in the other big game of the weekend. The Demons won their highly-anticipated round 11
clash, but the Dogs come into this one in better form. Melbourne managed only a draw with Hawthorn last week, despite the 17th-placed Hawks entering the game missing nine of their best 22 players. The wooden spoon isn’t entirely decided either, with a game-and-a-half separating Collingwood (15th) and North Melbourne (18th). Adelaide (16th) hosts Hawthorn this week and the winner will likely have enough breathing space through the final month of the season to avoid a bottom-place finish.
NAB AFL Rising Star JEREMY SHARP GOLD COAST SUNS
J
eremy Sharp was highly rated enough by Gold Coast for the Suns to trade a future first-round selection at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft for the West Australian, who is a dashing half-back with a penetrating kick. He featured just twice at AFL level in 2020 and has played the past four games for the Suns this season. Last Saturday in the super-competitive 11-point loss to the Western Bulldogs, Sharp enjoyed a day out with 30 disposals (at 90 per cent efficiency), 10 marks and two tackles. He is averaging 21.3 disposals a game this season and is becoming an important member of Stuart Dew’s back six. He is also the first Gold Coast player to receive a nomination this year. Essendon’s Archie Perkins won the round 17 nomination after his terrific 18 possessions and 3.3 against Adelaide. He joins fellow Bombers Nik Cox and Harrison Jones as nominees in 2021. ASHLEY BROWNE

t is a weekend of dual milestones and dual celebrations for Port Adelaide midfielder Travis Boak. His 300th game on Friday night against Collingwood at Adelaide Oval will draw him level with Kane Cornes for the most AFL games in club history. And it might not be the final milestone of his career. Cornes is one of many who believe Boak, 33, could have four or five more seasons left in the tank. “He was an absolute ultimate professional from the start, never left anything to chance and is an absolutely inspirational story for any young player coming into the game,” Cornes said. “He’s revolutionary in the way he has set a standard in looking after his body and set a standard for others to follow.
“He is always exploring different ways that work for him, not afraid to look outside the square at innovative things that have worked.” In an interview with the AFL Record earlier this year, Boak outlined the approach he takes to wring everything he can out of his body to keep playing so well at the top level. “A lot goes into it, but it’s all routine now,” he said. “For any athlete, that’s just a process to see what works for you and makes you feel best come game-day. “The only thing we can control is how we prepare for a game and how we go into a game and that’s what I have dialled into and for me it starts as soon as you finish the game the previous week. “I’ll start to write in my journal how I want to prepare my mind,

BLUES LEGEND MOURNED ASHLEY BROWNE
u Sergio Silvagni, the patriarch of Carlton’s greatest family, passed away last week aged 83. Recruited from West Preston, he made his debut for the Blues in 1958 and went on to play 239 games over 14 seasons. He played in the 1968 and 1970 premiership teams, was club captain in 1964, leading goalkicker in 1959, a state representative in 1962 and 1963 and a member of the club’s Team of the Century. In 2016 he was named as a Carlton Legend. His son Stephen is also one of the club’s all-time greats and was named as full-back in the AFL’s Team of the Century. He was known to all Blues fans as ‘SOS’ – ‘Son of Serge’.
BLUEBLOOD: Silvagni with son Stephen and wife Rita.
Grandson Jack has played 75 games and starred in the Blues’ emotional win over Collingwood last week. Silvagni’s contribution to Carlton didn’t end when his playing days did. He was a long-time committee member and assistant coach. For three games in 1978, he was stand-in senior coach after Ian Stewart’s sudden resignation and before Alex Jesaulenko took the job on a permanent basis. With his proud Italian background, Silvagni was one of the most culturally significant League players of his time, as the game began to gain in popularity among Australia’s post-war migrants and their families.

NO END IN SIGHT FOR DURABLE DOCKER MICHAEL LOVETT
L
ike most players of advancing years, Fremantle veteran David Mundy takes it one year at a time when it comes to penning new deals. Back in 2019, Mundy was preparing to play his 300th game and was his usual open and honest self in an interview with the Record’s Ashley Browne. He’d just signed a one-year deal which Browne described as “a no-brainer for player and club”. “It’s obviously very special,” Mundy told Browne. “I feel really honoured and privileged to have played my entire career for Fremantle. “I feel like I’ve given the club really good service and they’ve provided me with the opportunity to get the best out of myself and hopefully 300 isn’t it.” It wasn’t! Fast forward two years and 50 games, and Mundy is lining up for his 350th appearance as the Dockers take on Sydney at Metricon Stadium this week. Another one-year deal signed ahead of the 2021 season has given Mundy a new lease of life. Earlier this season, he was leading the AFL Coaches Association’s Player of the Year award and is still in the top 10. Mundy, who turned 36 earlier this week, leads the Dockers in clearances (95), tackles (71), inside 50s (77) and score assists (23) and ROUND 9, 2005
is second in disposals (427) and contested possessions (189). They’re the sort of figures that suggest another one-year deal beckons and, if he saddles up in 2023, the 400-game mark is not out of the question. What are the qualities that have made him so durable since he first pulled on a Fremantle jumper in round six, 2005, against Melbourne? “Once he crosses the white line he is the ultimate competitor and always gets the job done,” Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe said back in 2019. To give you a sense of Mundy’s longevity, in the team that upset the Demons in his 2005 debut were his current coach Justin Longmuir, now football general manager Peter Bell and Matthew Pavlich, whose games record (353) is about to be surpassed by Mundy. “He doesn’t need the applause or the adulation,” Fyfe said of his predecessor as Fremantle captain. “But he is a genuine superstar of the competition.” ROUND 18, 2021

AFL RECORD ESSENDON ON THE RISE
BOMBERS TAKE FLIGHT If Essendon is not yet back in town, then it is awfully close. Senior writer ASHLEY BROWNE lists five reasons why the eighth-placed Bombers are heading in the right direction. THE FUTURE: High draft selections Zach Reid, Archie Perkins and Nik Cox.
THE KIDS u Essendon fans only need to
look at what they see on the field and take a few minutes to study some footy history to feel excited about what is to come. The foundation for Geelong’s three flags between 2007 and 2011 was laid by nailing both the 1999 and 2001 drafts. Hawthorn’s drafts in 2001 and 2004 planted the seed for that club’s golden era. Richmond also enjoyed some excellent drafts bringing together a bunch of seriously-talented players of around the same age to nurture and grow together. Essendon has won at the draft in the past few seasons. Andrew McGrath, selected in 2016, is on track to being one of the better No. 1 picks in draft history. But it is the class of 2019-20 that might take the Bombers on an exciting journey over the next few years. Key forward Harrison Jones was a second-round pick in 2019 and, after not playing at all last year, has played all but one game in 2021, kicking 20 goals. Against Hawthorn in round 14, he kicked two goals and took five towering, contested marks. Nik Cox is a 200cm running machine and boasts silky skills on both sides of the body.

Everyone is excited about the way we are playing ESSENDON FOOTBALL BOSS JOSH MAHONEY
One of those qualities alone makes him an interesting prospect. Boasting all three, he has the makings of a superstar, especially when he looks as though he has yet to meet a barbell that he likes. Twenty-three possessions and a goal on the big stage of the Dreamtime Game underlined his potential and earned him a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination that Bomber fans had been demanding for weeks. The eighth selection last December, he is already shaping as a steal. Taken with the ninth selection, Archie Perkins made a hat-trick of Rising Star nominations for the Bombers following his 18-possessions, four marks and three goals against Adelaide a fortnight ago. Zach Reid was pick 10, but has played just one match this year. At 202cm, he is an enthralling prospect for next season.
THE MIDS u There was a brittleness
about Essendon in the past that might have brought the team undone when a player such Dylan Shiel suffered a torn meniscus in the second game of the season. At the time, it was thought it might rule him out for the rest of the season.
Highly-regarded Jye Caldwell, another former Giant, also hasn’t played since round two because of a hamstring injury. But into the breach stepped Darcy Parish, who has enjoyed a magnificent All-Australian worthy season. He is averaging 31.4 possessions a game, the sixth highest in the competition, and is regarded by Champion Data as elite for contested possessions (14.1), clearances (eight), metres gained (488.8) and score involvements (7.6). And he has played extraordinarily well in big games this year, winning the Anzac Day Medal, the Yiooken Award in the Dreamtime Game and the Country Medal against Geelong. In a four-week spell in the middle of the season, he BIG IMPROVER: Darcy Parish has taken his game to the next level.
racked up 39 touches against Fremantle, 36 against North Melbourne and West Coast and 44 against the Tigers. According to a recent ABC Grandstand report, Parish is in the top five midfielders in the competition for generating scoring opportunities. With Zach Merrett also averaging a career-best 32.4 disposals a game and in career-best form, the Bombers’ midfield hasn’t skipped a beat and the forwards wouldn’t be complaining either. Essendon is the third-highest scoring team in the AFL this year.
SEN.com.au
19/7/21 5:55 pm
THE DECISION u OK, it didn’t have the global
sports world on tenterhooks like LeBron James back in 2010, but Essendon people had been hanging out for Merrett to make up his mind about his playing future. It’s not as though the Bombers hadn’t attracted good players in the past. They beat a Melbourne Cup field of suitors to sign Shiel when he left the Giants. But going back to the days of the supplements scandal, several good players such as Paddy Ryder and Jake Carlisle left the club. around Joe Daniher, Orazio Fantasia and Conor McKenna. Adam Saad also departed the Bombers at the end of last season. Being from such an iconic Essendon family, Daniher’s departure for Brisbane was a sorry moment for the club, even though it had been on the cards after his failed bid to join Sydney 12 months earlier. Which made the anxiety over Merrett’s decision all the more palpable. In the end, he stayed, committing to the Bombers pretty much for life – a six-year deal worth up to $5m. The unintended consequence of losing Saad to Carlton was that Nick Hind was traded in from St Kilda and Essendon people will say that his run and carry off half-back has added excitement and X-factor to the Bombers.
players have been welcomed back into the fold. “All the players have been made aware of the history of Essendon. We are a successful club and we want to add to that,” Mahoney said.

coach at Essendon for his time. Ben Rutten is proving to be the right coach at Essendon for the now. The first-year coach, who cut his coaching teeth at Richmond and then transitioned to the top job at the Bombers working alongside Worsfold, has been lauded for his clear direction and game-plan and making it clear to every player as to their roles and what is expected. “He’s calm, level-headed and he approaches every week the same,” said Essendon’s general manager of football Josh Mahoney. “The players really embrace that and follow him in the direction he has taken the club.” More than some, he has embraced the culture and tradition of Essendon and former

of their focus in the past few years has been on repairing their image and stabilising the club. They were lauded by the AFL last year for their swift and detailed response to McKenna’s positive COVID test and in some ways that lifted a cloud over the club’s head. This year at Essendon hasn’t been about brand management. Rather, it is on the core business – football. The combination of the kids, the mids, the decision and the coach has left Essendon people on and off the ground and inside and outside the club buzzing with excitement. There have been false dawns at Essendon before. The James HirdMark Thompson appointment in 2012 had everyone up and about. The return of the suspended players in 2017 sparked a new wave of red-and-black optimism. But it looks and feels different this time around, even though with five rounds remaining, Sydney at the SCG still remains the biggest scalp taken by Essendon this season. “Everyone is excited about the way we’re playing as a team and as individual players,” Mahoney said. “If that keeps happening, then the improvement will come.”

his 300th game with a bag of six goals and a win over the Brisbane Lions. It was a big build-up to the momentous occasion as Riewoldt became just the fourth Tiger to reach the triple ton milestone, a week after becoming the fourth to kick 700 goals. Richmond was planning to celebrate Riewoldt’s 300th at the MCG against the Lions, but a COVID outbreak forced the match to be moved to Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast. Remarkably, the 32-year-old turned it on despite the distractions and joined Carlton’s Eddie Betts and Tigers legend Jack Dyer as the only men in the history of the game to kick six goals in game No. 300. Riewoldt also took seven marks (three contested) and had nine score involvements as Richmond snapped a four-game losing streak to keep its season alive. The performance pleased coach Damien Hardwick, who was thrilled the vice-captain’s teammates were able to get the job done on such a significant occasion. “It was great wasn’t it, it was terrific,” Hardwick said after the game. “We realise what a quality player he is, but to see that sort of game in his 300th was very nice. “The way he goes about his footy, he prepares very well, he leads from the front and I’m pleased that our players played a solid game for him and he got the reward he was after.” ANDREW SLEVISON

LATEST TECHNOLOGY: The Optus Stadium LED screens are the biggest in Australia; (inset) the first video board at Waverley Park.
HI-TECH WOWING FANS
S
tadium technology has changed the way fans experience a day at the footy. AFL venues are now using world-leading technology from companies such as Ross Video to connect sponsors to fans and fans to the game in ways never before seen. Gone are the days of corflute signage or rotating banners. Advertisements around the ground can be linked in with player stats or historical data or show interactive content fans can control from their smart phone. Live social media posts, augmented graphics, face filters and dynamic animations are all used to attract fans to brands. It’s a big move forward from a bygone era when large venues such as the MCG attracted 120,000 fans on Grand Final day. The only messaging fans would read were the scores (and often the race results!) on the scoreboard while large banners were draped over the upper tier or around the boundary fence, with messages such as ‘THE GREAT HIGH FLYING MAGPIES’. SPECTACULAR: The Adelaide Oval screen.
THE CHANGING FACE OF SCOREBOARD/VIDEO TECHNOLOGY

»
2011-15 AFL venues begin installing LED boundary signage. The MCG and Marvel Stadium were the first to have full 360-degree LED boundary signage at ground level in 2015.

2017 Adelaide Oval upgrades lead the way for teams to begin creating spectacular audio-visual shows for their entry on to the field, goals and winning celebrations.

2018 Optus Stadium installs the biggest LED screens in an Australian stadium.
ROSS VIDEO FACTS u In 2017, Adelaide Oval installs Ross Video’s Xpression Tessera system to drive its LED ribbons and screens. It was the first stadium in Australia to do so and only the second in the world behind Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Adelaide Oval becomes Australia’s first fully unified venue, with a single button press being able to control big screens, LED ribbon boards, corporate suite screens, audio and stadium lighting. u From 2018, the MCG, Marvel Stadium and the SCG began installing Xpression Tessera, with Optus Stadium, the Gabba, Metricon Stadium, Giants Stadium and TIO Stadium all running other versions of Ross Video’s Xpression graphics platform. u Ross Video has video systems driving screens in 16 major stadiums across Australia. u Ross Video technology allows game score data or stats to control graphics and animations, enabling stadium production to be automated. u Ross Video powers hundreds of sports venues and productions across the world, including the NFL Super Bowl, the United Center (home of the Chicago Bulls) and the spectacular new SoFI Stadium in Los Angeles, which boasts the biggest LED screen in professional sport at more than 80 million pixels.

ANSWER MAN
with GRAHAM PILKINGTON
The last time a player kicked 100 goals in a season was ‘Buddy’ Franklin in 2008. Who has kicked a century in a season the most times?
SIX-SHOOTERS: Champion forwards Tony Lockett and Jason Dunstall (inset) top the list of century goalkickers.
MARK CRIMMINS, VIA EMAIL GP: Tony Lockett did it six times for St Kilda and Sydney, as did Jason Dunstall for Hawthorn. Lockett achieved it in 1995 even though the Swans finished 12th on the ladder. Gordon Coventry was the first to kick a century of goals in a season when he kicked 124 for the Magpies in 1929, almost double the total of the next player. The Swans’ Bob Pratt (in 1934) and Hawthorn’s Peter Hudson (in 1971) kicked the equal most in a season – 150. On his way to that total, Pratt reached 100 in just 13 games. Gary Ablett snr is the second fastest to a century, in 14 games for Geelong in 1993. Lance Franklin booted 113 goals and 88 behinds for Hawthorn in 2008, placing him fourth on the list of most known behinds in a season. Since 1929, there has been a centurion in each decade, but there has been none since Franklin. Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd (twice) and St Kilda’s Fraser Gehrig are the only other players to achieve this feat since 2000.

u Richmond’s Blair
Campbell had a 20th birthday to remember – playing his first VFL game and kicking the winning goal after the siren. Campbell was a consistent goalkicker in the under-19s and reserves competitions before being called up for his senior debut against South Melbourne in round 17, 1966, at the Lake Oval.
The Swans led by three points at three-quarter time and in the final quarter South full-forward Austin Robertson appeared to seal the game when he kicked his fifth goal. However, the Tigers kept coming and the footy ended up in Campbell’s hands as the siren sounded with Richmond five points behind. Campbell’s kick, which he described as poor, just cleared the ruckman in the goalsquare to give Richmond a one-point victory. South players claimed the ball was touched but the goal stood. Later in the season, Campbell was a member of the Richmond reserves premiership team. His teammates included future Tiger premiership stars Royce Hart, Michael Green and Barry Richardson. Campbell played 20 games and kicked 35 goals for Richmond and Melbourne. He also played first-class cricket for Victoria and Tasmania. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK
DONE AND DUSTED FOR 2021 u For all the accolades and praise
heaped on Dustin Martin over his remarkable 12-year career, one aspect of his game has not received the recognition it should. And that is his resilience. The Richmond superstar has the ability to get up week after week and has played relatively injury-free since he made his debut way back in the opening round of 2010. He has played 20-plus games every season, but that run will end in 2021 after he suffered a serious kidney injury last Friday night. The triple Norm Smith medallist collided with Brisbane Lions tough nut Mitch Robinson and from the moment of impact, you knew he was in a world of pain. It takes a fair bit to bring Martin down, but he was taken to a Gold Coast hospital that night and was unable to fly home with his victorious teammates. The Tigers released a statement saying Martin would not play again in 2021, and he joins a long list of walking wounded at Punt Rd.

ROUND
19
UP FOR THE CONTEST: Milestone man Travis Boak and Magpie star Taylor Adams will play crucial roles in the clearance battles.
HEAD to HEAD Played 33: Port Adelaide 17, Collingwood 16. Since 2016: Port Adelaide 5, Collingwood 2. Most recent game: round 10, 2021, Port Adelaide d Collingwood by 1 point at the MCG. Highest attendance: 77,405, second preliminary final, 2003, at the MCG.
PORT ADELAIDE
Match Preview
u A workmanlike performance against the in-form Saints at Marvel Stadium last week was enough to propel the Power past the slumping Lions and into the top four. The task ahead for Port Adelaide is to stay there and it starts at home against Collingwood in a game where passions are always that bit inflamed due to tiffs and spats over black-and-white jumpers. Ollie Wines has struck a rich vein of form for the Power with 36 touches and a goal against St Kilda, while the exciting Mitch Georgiades booted four goals. Zak Butters and Connor Rozee are in the frame to return this week, while champion midfielder
Travis Boak plays his 300th game, which adds to the occasion. Collingwood played some bright football early to lead Carlton by 24 points, but faded badly thereafter and the eventual 29-point margin suggested a team that is just waiting for the season to come to a merciful end. The Magpies usually travel well and some of their better wins in recent years have been on the road, but this is their youngest and least-experienced squad for some time. Port Adelaide, with the double chance squarely in its sights, will smell blood and should win comfortably. ASHLEY BROWNE
Prediction: Port Adelaide by 26 points
Highest score: 19.11 (125), round 11, 2016, at the MCG. Lowest score: 3.3 (21), round 20, 2011, at Football Park. Most goals in a game: 5, Scott Cummings, round 9, 1998, at Football Park; Gavin Wanganeen, round 8, 2001, at Football Park; Robbie Gray, round 14, 2017, at the MCG.

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne
The ring master’s juggling act It’s been a tough time for the AFL’s boss, but he’s guided the game through a minefield.
Y
ou have to wonder sometimes whether AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan feels like he is walking in the same shoes as Michael Corleone. “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in,” the fictional crime boss says in the most-quoted line in Godfather III, the last of Francis Ford Coppola’s acclaimed trilogy. Let’s be clear. McLachlan is no mafia Don. He is the experienced, capable and, dare it be said, popular leader of Australia’s national football code, and is generally regarded to have done an excellent job of navigating the game through all sorts of issues and existential threats. I would also argue that when stacked up against his three predecessors – Andrew Demetriou, Wayne Jackson and Ross Oakley – he is the biggest football fan to have led the game. And that’s despite the fact Demetriou and Oakley played in the old VFL and Jackson in the SANFL. But McLachlan is having Corleone moments over and over again this season. Every time he might be tempted to think he might be close to having this COVID thing licked, it comes back, nastier than before. Only four rounds of this season have not been affected by the pandemic in some shape

GRINNING AND BEARING IT: AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has continued to navigate the game through all the issues and threats of COVID; (inset) the Swans and Giants sit side by side as they take flight from Victoria last week.

or form. The AFLW season was similarly disrupted. The AFL had made plans that it thought might last through until the end of the home and away season, with the Swans and Giants relocating to Victoria from locked-down Sydney. Plans were afoot to have their families quarantine outside the state and then join them in Victoria. All on the AFL’s dime. Last weekend’s Sydney derby was all set for Ballarat and the Swans, with their healthy supporter base from the old South Melbourne, would have come close to filling the stadium. But then came last Wednesday and Thursday. The Delta strain of COVID well and truly found its way across the border from NSW. The Carlton-Geelong clash at the MCG was a spreader event and Victoria went into lockdown. As the Swans and Giants, and then Richmond, Essendon and North Melbourne all took the first available plane out of town, McLachlan surely had another Corleone moment as he and his crisis management team mobilised once again, dealing with health officials, airlines and hotels as they juggled multiple balls to keep the season going. This weekend’s games were only finalised on Monday morning. Last month, McLachlan told 3AW that the COVID outbreaks in June had cost the AFL about $15m, a combination of relocating clubs and vastly reduced – and in some cases zero – crowds at games.
That financial carnage is now likely to continue for much of the remainder of the home and away season, depending on how successful various measures around the country are at curbing the spread of the ultra-contagious Delta variant. The AFL wiped out most of its cash reserves last season to keep the season afloat. And given the disruption to this season, there is little chance the League has made any headway towards restoring the game towards some sort of financial health. The $600m line of credit the League negotiated with NAB and the ANZ last year is still there. The net effect of the past two years of disruption is that McLachlan will be continuing in the top job for some time yet. Had there been no COVID, industry talk was rife that McLachlan would have likely stepped down some time in 2020 or 2021. But as the pandemic took hold of the game last year, he told The Age, “I’m committed to what I’m doing. I’m just focused on doing my job and not running off.” Circumstances haven’t changed enough this year for McLachlan to have altered his thinking. That, and the lack of an obvious successor – which is a subject worthy of a column all its own – means the removalist vans won’t be pulling up outside AFL headquarters any time soon.
