EDITOR’S LETTER

t was 45 seconds of sheer brilliance and the surprise would be if Western Bulldogs fans haven’t watched it over and over again all week. After leading Melbourne for most of their top-of-the-table clash at the MCG last Saturday night, the Dogs needed a spark as the Demons got on a roll and crept to within four points well into the final term. Enter Marcus Bontempelli. The Bulldogs midfield superstar is the raging Brownlow Medal favourite and maybe, just maybe, has surpassed Dustin Martin as the best player in the competition. And in the blink of an eye, he demonstrated why. First, with the ball seemingly hemmed in the Dogs’ forward line, he found a whisker of space, slammed the ball on to his left foot and kicked a goal around his body to steady the Dogs and give them some breathing space. Then from the resultant centre bounce, Bontempelli tore out of the middle and speared a pass on his right – and non-preferred – foot down the throat of the fast-leading Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, u We can’t exactly put a disclaimer on the cover of the AFL Record, but here is a word of warning that not everything goes plan as we try to meet our weekly deadline. Last week was a case in point – we met our regular Monday 6pm deadline just an hour after the AFL had released the revised round 19 fixture.

TOP DOG: Marcus Bontempelli’s brilliance helped propel the Bulldogs to the top of the ladder with a win over the Demons.

who converted to take the margin out to 16 points and effectively snuff out any remaining resistance from the Demons. The win propelled the Dogs to the top of the ladder and, 24 hours later, after Geelong hammered Richmond for the second time this year, Melbourne dropped to third. But given the topsy-turvy nature of the season – the Demons, Dogs, Cats, Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide have all had their flag favouritism moments – it might not mean much come September. Indeed, coach Simon Goodwin sought to reassure Melbourne fans, For Port Adelaide fans, there was the chance to celebrate Travis Boak’s 300th game and a special cover was produced for the big clash at Adelaide Oval against Collingwood. Lo and behold, less than 24 hour later South Australia was in lockdown, joining Victoria and New South Wales, and the Power and the Adelaide Crows

I’m not worried one bit MELBOURNE COACH SIMON GOODWIN AFTER THE DEMONS’ LOSS TO THE DOGS

already anxious after the draw against lowly Hawthorn the week before, when he said, “I’m not worried one bit. Our belief is still really strong in the way we play. We sit here confident.” At the other end of the eight, a battle royale is underway for eighth place, the likely sole remaining vacancy in the eight. A fine second-half comeback by the Giants saw them defeat Essendon and move from 12th into the eight and tip the Bombers into ninth spot. The Giants remain the most enigmatic team in the competition

were bundled on flights to Melbourne. It was a sad sight to see Boak run out for his 300th game at an empty Marvel Stadium. His mother Chicki was unable to attend, which was a shame given Boak’s father Roger died 15 years ago, just 18 months before he was drafted by Port Adelaide. His father’s influence as a young person growing up has

always been a driving force for the Power star. But that’s the world we live in and given more than half the country was in lockdown last week, all fans should be grateful that games are still being played. So bear with us here at the Record as we navigate our way through the last few home and away rounds. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME and not even coach Leon Cameron would know what to expect from his men from week to week. With Port Adelaide, Geelong and Richmond over the next three weeks, they are no certainties to remain there. Richmond will probably need to win every game from here, but with bottom pair Hawthorn and North Melbourne still to come, the Tigers might still mount a late charge, although they are also so battered and beaten, they’re probably not up to much of a finals challenge if they do make it. The Tigers are in Perth to face Fremantle this week, but the Dockers will be without dual Brownlow medallist and skipper Nat Fyfe, who dislocated his shoulder one too many times last week and will now need surgery. St Kilda remains in the mix and lost few friends in an eight-point loss to West Coast at Optus Stadium that featured six goals (and eight contested marks) to emerging star forward Max King. But a line can be drawn through Carlton, which surrendered seven unanswered goals to North Melbourne last Saturday at Marvel Stadium in as dispiriting a display from a finals aspirant that you could wish to see. Coach David Teague is now holding on to his job by a thread, sad to say. North’s win drew it equal with Hawthorn at the bottom of the ladder. The Kangaroos are playing like a team that doesn’t want a wooden spoon and they might yet get their wish.

KING RULES: Emerging star forward Max King enjoyed a breakout game against the Eagles, kicking six goals and taking eight contested marks.

H

arry Schoenberg looked at home at AFL level almost from the minute he made his debut and in eight games for Adelaide last year, he averaged 11.8 disposals and 1.6 clearances. And the Crows were certainly impressed enough to hand him a contract extension through until 2023. That form has continued into 2021, averaging 17.4 disposals a game, 7.2 contested possessions and 2.7 clearances – and he hasn’t missed a beat, playing all 18 games. As Matthew Nicks reshapes the Crows, Schoenberg – a 2019 second-round NAB AFL Draft selection from Mintaro-Manoora via Woodville-West Torrens – has become an important part of his midfield mix. Against Hawthorn last weekend, he put in a great night’s work at Marvel Stadium, with 24 disposals, five marks and six tackles in the 19-point win over Hawthorn that all but ensured the Crows won’t finish bottom for the second successive year. He joins Riley Thilthorpe and Lachie Sholl as fellow nominees from the Crows this season. ASHLEY BROWNE

Australian club (Fremantle pair David Mundy and Matthew Pavlich are the others) to have pretty much hopped on a plane and travelled across the country 10 or more times each year for more than 15 years to play football. It is an outstanding achievement from the no-frills key defender, who stepped down as skipper at the end of 2019, handing the reins to Luke

Shuey after a distinguished five-year stint that included the 2018 premiership. It was one of the great Grand Finals of the modern era and also one of the great captain’s games as West Coast worked its way out of a five-goal hole in the opening term. Rather than panic, Hurn calmly helped the Eagles stick to the game-plan and the processes that had brought them that far. Countless hours working through the various scenarios when facing such a deficit came to the fore, as they did in the final term when West Coast moved the ball methodically forward to Dom Sheed, who marked and kicked that all-time pressure goal to hand the Eagles the lead and, minutes later, the flag. Hurn’s reliable kicking and football smarts have been an asset and a weapon for West Coast from the time he joined the club at the 2005 NAB AFL Draft. Originally from Angaston, South Australia, he has traditionally been one of the most grounded players in the AFL. Not for him the glamour side of the game, and off-seasons spent in the bars of Europe or NFL and NBA grandstands, when such things were allowed. Then and now, he’s most happy away from football back on the family farm or out on a boat, fishing rod in hand. “People say I should enjoy the fruits more, but this is what I am,” he told the AFL Record in 2019. “I like playing football, I like going to training and to be with my mates.” u FACT FILE

It’s one of the great footy exercises at this time of the year as fans try to work out who will make the All-Australian team. endured a slow start to the season, but has hit his straps in recent weeks. That was evidenced by his dominant performance in last weekend’s 39-point victory over Carlton. The 23-year-old had kicked 11 goals in 10 matches in the first half of 2021, but has booted 23 in eight games since, highlighted by a career-best haul of seven against the Blues. Larkey kicked two in the first quarter before adding three as the Roos put the Blues to the sword in the third term. He finished off with a couple in the final quarter to well and truly fill his bag. Also on Larkey’s impressive stats sheet was 20 disposals, 13 score involvements, eight marks (three contested) and three inside 50s. He admits he was able to “reap the rewards” of the brilliant work his teammates did up the ground. “It was an unreal day for forwards,” he said on SEN Breakfast. “I don’t think I did too much different personally to what I had been doing in previous weeks. “When the ball movement flows like that, you reap the rewards as a key forward. “We were so good, our scores off turnover, the ball just whipped down the other end real quick. “It was awesome to be a forward down there. You live for days like that.” ANDREW SLEVISON

WE WERE THERE WHEN AUSTRALIA GAVE ONE OF ITS BEST RUCKMEN TO AMERICA Some years back, Ben Simmons had to choose between two games he loved. One of his footy team mates at the time is now among Australia’s best. Ben himself ended up deciding on basketball and what a stupendous decision that was. His days as a ruckman might have ended prematurely, but his love of Four’N Twenty pies hasn’t wavered.

This Bulldog has bite and brilliance

I

t’s probably a nod to pending greatness when your nickname is the shortened version of your surname. And that certainly rings true in the case of Western Bulldogs superstar Marcus Bontempelli. From the time he walked through the doors at Whitten Oval after rocketing up the selection order in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, he’s simply been ‘The Bont’.

18  AFL RECORD

He’s the one Bulldogs fans have taken a shine to going back to his first season in 2014 when he was beaten by just one vote in the coveted NAB AFL Rising Star award. Bontempelli was a rangy, almost coltish-looking left-footer back then. His ability to hunt the ball, keep his balance and hit targets impressed many a good judge. It was those traits that took him from a potential mid-range second-round pick in 2013 to the overall No. 4 selection in his final year of under-18 football. The draft is akin to yearling sales for racehorses and sometimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Bulldogs recruiters couldn’t believe their good fortune when Bontempelli was still available at

pick four and history has shown them to be good judges. Just check his CV. Three club best and fairests, runner-up once and third twice. Triple All-Australian, the AFL Coaches Association’s Player of the Year and now the raging favourite for the 2021 Brownlow Medal. But it’s not all about individual awards for this humble young man from Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs. He was a premiership player in 2016 as the Bulldogs broke a 62-year drought and he is now displaying outstanding leadership qualities after being appointed captain in 2020. And who knows, he might be the one holding up the premiership cup later this season.

LETTING THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG

O

ur game has certainly evolved over the years, both physically and technically, with the intensity and player demands higher than ever. In-depth analysis of play is key to both athlete and team performance and being able to communicate this analysis effectively is critical. Modern-day graphical analysis software such as Ross Video’s PIERO plays a big part in an AFL team’s coaching department. Over the next four weeks in the AFL Record, we’re going to be using Ross Video’s PIERO to bring these moments to you, starting with the build-up and excitement of Geelong forward Gary Rohan’s after-the-siren match-winner against the Western Bulldogs in round 14.

Cameron Guthrie bursts through the wing, grabs the ball and handballs to teammate Isaac Smith.

ABOUT PIERO

u PIERO is an award-winning sports analysis tool from Ross Video. u PIERO uses image recognition or encoded camera heads to overlay tactical graphics on game play. u The comprehensive palette of effects delivers high-impact technical analysis for sports teams and broadcasters. u Professional and amateur teams use PIERO to improve coach-to-player communication and to review and prepare team strategy. u For broadcasters, PIERO gives them an elegant and easy way to visually analyse the game while offering cutting-edge opportunities to sponsors. u As well as offering PIERO, Ross Video powers sports broadcast and stadium technology around Australia and across the world. u Ross Video has a wide range of production solutions including video switchers, graphic engines, scoring and LED screen control, robotic cameras and more for everything from web streams to high-end broadcast facilities, local sporting grounds and the world’s biggest stadiums.

Advanced Analysis PIERO is built on a proprietary line and texture tracking algorithm that was co-developed with the BBC’s Research and Development department. The technology creates a seamless blend of graphics and video which maintains perspective and keeps graphics tied to the game as the camera moves. Coach-Player Communication PIERO helps sports clubs maximize coach-player communication efficiency. The system allows coaches to easily identify key moments from previous games with their players. They can then use this information to educate players and pinpoint areas of play that can be improved. Review and Prepare Strategy Using PIERO’s 3D replay system and wide range of effects, clubs can more effectively review past games and plan for those that are upcoming. Data visualizations and the tactical overview feature help coaches develop new, more in-depth plays and strategies with their players.

ANSWER MAN I was surprised to learn that Hawthorn and Melbourne’s draw in round 18 was the first between them in history. They first met in the 1925 season. Which pairing of clubs has gone the longest without playing in a draw?

with COL HUTCHINSON LUCK OF THE DRAW: A disconsolate Clayton Oliver after the Demons-Hawks thriller in round 18; (inset) the Cats and Swans have never played a draw.

PAT HORAN, VIA EMAIL CH: On average, a draw occurs once every 98 matches. The Cats and Swans first played against each other in round five, 1897. Remarkably, they have met 227 times, with 33 games resulting in margins from one to six points, but they have never played a draw. There have been 44 club pairings that have produced at least 100 successive games either side of a draw. The first case of at least 100 games before a draw occurred from round four, 1897, until 50 years later when Collingwood and South Melbourne strung together 108 matches before their only draw – in round 15, 1947, at the Lake Oval. The captains that day were Magpie Phonse Kyne and

Swan Jack Graham. The clubs have played each other 120 times since, with five one-point margins being the narrowest result. Essendon and Fitzroy produced a unique situation, being the only clubs to play in successive draws – on two separate occasions – in 1921-22 and 1944-45. They then met 98 times from round 13, 1945, until their final clash in the Lions’ farewell season in 1996 without another draw.

u Laurie Nash and Bob

Pratt were a formidable forward duo for South Melbourne during the 1930s, highlighted by their combined 199 goals in 1934. However, Nash’s finest performance was in a state game for Victoria when he kicked 18 goals. In August, 1934, the Big V hosted South Australia at the MCG.

The visitors were spearheaded by prolific forward Ken Farmer, while the Vics were without Pratt, who was unavailable, so St Kilda’s Bill Mohr lined up at full-forward and Nash at centre half-forward. The Victorian team included some of the greats of the game, including Jack Regan, Albert Collier, Dick Reynolds and Haydn Bunton. At the end of the first quarter, with the home team leading by 47 points, Mohr was replaced after breaking a finger. Nash moved to the goalsquare and, according to the Football Record, produced one of the finest exhibitions of forward play the game had seen. He had four goals to half-time, then kicked seven in each of the last two quarters, including 13 in succession, to finish with 18. The Big V won 30.19 (199) to 14.10 (94). MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK

WOUNDED LEADERS A SORRY SIGHT

u It was a tale of woe for two of the AFL’s

most inspirational leaders last weekend with Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe (left) and Collingwood skipper Scott Pendelbury (inset) both suffering season-ending injuries. Fyfe dislocated his right shoulder shortly before half-time in the Dockers’ 40-point loss to Sydney at Metricon Stadium last Sunday. It was the same shoulder he injured earlier in the year and hurt again in the previous round against Geelong. Pendlebury hobbled off in the first quarter of last Friday’s clash against Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium with a leg injury. The Collingwood star cut a forlorn figure as he sat at the back of the Magpies’ interchange bench. With no crowd to urge the Pies on, Pendlebury had to play cheerleader for the remaining three quarters, but it was in vain as the Power recorded a 28-point win. The following day, scans revealed Pendlebury had suffered a hairline fracture in his lower left leg and he will sit out the remaining four matches of 2021.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u It has been an amazing season from Rory Laird (142) when you look across his games. He was shifted into the midfield late last year and that role has continued in 2021. As a result, the Crow is producing the best, and most consistent, Fantasy numbers of his career. He has been in superb form. Since round nine he has had only one score below 115 for an average of 118. Laird’s 36 disposals and two goals last Saturday night was his best return for the season.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

u Since shedding the medical sub tracksuit a month ago, Brayden Fiorini (142) has posted premium scores in every game and was the equal top-scorer for round 19. Jack Macrae (138) was back to his best after three weeks where he failed to reach the Fantasy ton. There were a few non-midfielders racking up big points in round 19. 5

JEREMY SHARP GCS, MID – 112 u Proving his 123 in round 18 wasn’t a fluke, Sharp is holding down the M8 position for a few cash-strapped coaches and doing better than some of the premiums in their squads. Enjoying his role on the wing, Sharp collected 31 disposals, took nine marks and kicked a goal to make a late run for a podium finish in the Barlow Medal. ERROL GULDEN SYD, MID/FWD – 105 u Back to his early season form, with 23 disposals, five marks, five tackles and a goal.

4

3

HARRY EDWARDS WCE, DEF – 86 u Despite his opponent kicking six goals, Edwards’ 12 marks helped him to a personal best score. LACHIE BRAMBLE HAW, MID/FWD – 81 u Takes kick-ins and can run! Had a big last term with 11 disposals and 32 Fantasy points. OLLIE HENRY COLL, FWD – 79 u Added two goals to the three he kicked the week prior, the small forward is finally making some cash.

MID/DEF, $710,000 u The running machine didn’t miss a beat in his return from concussion, scoring a season-high 132. Despite that, still dropped $11K due to his huge BE and is now an under-priced premium target. Has an ownership of just 13 per cent.

MID, $839,000 u What a massive letdown, especially for those who had him captain. After a good first quarter scoring 30, he went missing for the remainder of the game, barely being sighted before finishing on 64. He now has a BE of 161 and dropped $33K.

LACHIE NEALE

BRISBANE LIONS

MID, $723,000 u If it’s not an injury, it’s a bad score and this is starting to wear thin for his owners. Neale is carrying a three-game average of 93 following his disappointing score of 76. But he has a great run of games over the next four weeks.

NICK HAYNES

GWS GIANTS

DEF, $523,000 u Despite a favourable match-up, and taking eight marks, Haynes reached just 60. He has a three-game average of 57 and doesn’t look like posting a decent score anytime soon, so must be moved on. Has a BE of 104 and a diminishing ownership of six per cent.

SHAI BOLTON

RICHMOND

MID/FWD, $559,000 u Apologies for suggesting Bolton was a good option for cash-starved coaches who needed to get rid of ‘Dusty’. He had his worst score for 13 weeks, collecting just four kicks for a disappointing 44. What was thought to be a bargain, dropped $25K and now has a BE of 101.

u Had a massive first half against the Tigers before finishing with 118, for an elite average of 109 in the past five weeks. Has a high ownership of 31 per cent, but for that price, with a BE of just 85, he is too good to say no, despite his popularity. ALSO CONSIDER: Bradley Hill, Clayton Oliver, Finlay Macrae

u Opposition teams have quickly worked out that if you let Parish do what he wants, he will get a heap of it and have a big influence on the game. Twice in the past two weeks he has been tagged to under 70. ALSO CONSIDER: Tim Taranto, Sam Walsh, Christian Salem

Bulldogs v Crows

ROUND

20

HEAD to HEAD

MATCH-WINNER: Aaron Naughton marks among a nest of Crows in his six-goal haul for the Bulldogs last season.

Played 46: Western Bulldogs 25, Adelaide Crows 21. Since 2016: Western Bulldogs 3, Adelaide Crows 2. Most recent game: round 12, 2020, Western Bulldogs d Adelaide Crows by 57 points at Metricon Stadium. Highest attendance: 70,088, first preliminary final, 1997, at the MCG.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Match Preview

u The Bulldogs had the better of Melbourne for most of last week’s top-of-the-table clash, but needed a withering finish, inspired by the brilliant Marcus Bontempelli, to finally get over the line. The Dogs need to hold their ground over the remaining four games and they’ll be in the box seat come September. It wasn’t just Brownlow favourite Bontempelli who starred against the Demons – Jack Macrae and Caleb Daniel also racked up 30-plus possessions. Josh Dunkley should be back from quarantine this week as well. Adelaide snapped a four-game losing streak with a fine performance against Hawthorn last week, putting 16 goals past the Hawks at Marvel Stadium a fortnight after

kicking just two there against Essendon. It all but ensured there will be no repeat wooden spoon for the Crows and underlines their improvement on last season. Rory Laird ran amok with 36 disposals and two goals, while Taylor Walker (four goals) and Darcy Fogarty (two) were a dangerous forward tandem. Without former Crow Alex Keath, Luke Beveridge will have some serious defensive planning to do, although the move of Josh Schache to a key defensive role has paid some early dividends. At this stage of the year, don’t look for a thumping Dogs win, but they’ll do enough to get the four points. ASHLEY BROWNE

Message from the

Minister

It’s a great pleasure to welcome football fans to Mars Stadium for this Round 20 match between the Western Bulldogs and the Adelaide Crows. This will be the third AFL football match to be played at Mars Stadium this year, with the Government also supporting the Western Bulldogs’ clash against the Brisbane Lions in April and the GWS Giants’ match against the Gold Coast Suns in July. Mars Stadium has hosted six Western Bulldogs matches since 2017 and firmly established itself as one of Victoria’s premier sporting venues, right in the heart of regional Victoria. To ensure it remains a world-class sporting precinct, the Government’s $6.6 million upgrade is now well underway, with works to include new entrances, new ticket boxes and covered areas, female friendly change rooms and increased accessible seating in the Western and Eastern stands. Having already delivered $38.5 million to redevelop the Eureka Sports Precinct, these latest works are part of our $11.8 million in funding support which also includes important upgrades to Ballarat Sports and Events Centre.

regional Victoria’s visitor economy, providing a continued boost for small local businesses and tourism operators. After the game, I encourage you to explore Ballarat and experience everything wonders and iconic historical attractions. I’d like to wish both teams good luck for today’s game and I hope everyone has an enjoyable stay in Ballarat.

The Hon Martin Pakula MP Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME: Sydney has been reborn as a free-flowing and attacking team under coach John Longmire in 2021.

‘Horse’ should be first past the post In a trying season for all coaches, Sydney’s John Longmire has been a standout.

T

he Allan Jeans Senior Coach of the Year is a curious award. It is selected by the 18 AFL coaches on a 3-2-1 basis. But the vote is taken and the award announced before the Grand Final, which means that somehow, despite his four premierships and universal standing as the greatest coach in the game, Alastair Clarkson has never won it. John Longmire has won it twice – in 2012 and 2014. The first time around it proved to be quite prescient as his Swans upset raging favourite Hawthorn in the Grand Final. Two years later it might have been premature as the Hawks dismantled the Swans in the decider. Of all the years Clarkson should have won the award, 2014 was it. But this year Longmire is on track to win it for the third time and there would be absolutely no quibbling if he did. The Sydney coach is at the top of his game on a couple of counts. It starts on the field. The Swans have gone from the bottom four to the top six. A top-four finish come the end of the home and away season is not beyond them. They started the season beating Brisbane at the Gabba and

followed up a fortnight later with a win over Richmond at the MCG. The Swans have beaten Geelong at the SCG and, since moving out of their home state for COVID reasons, have knocked over West Coast, the Western Bulldogs, the GWS Giants after spotting them a 35-point lead and Fremantle. In the sign of a coach not too stubborn to address his shortcomings despite a decade in the job, Longmire reached out to former Adelaide coach Don Pyke and brought him to the club as an assistant and handed him large slabs of responsibility about how the Swans play. Traditionally a stodgy and defensive unit built around winning contests, Sydney has been reborn as a free-flowing and attacking team, one of the most exciting to watch in the competition. But where Longmire has truly raised the bar is as a manager of people. I got an inkling of it last year when I interviewed him while writing my book A Season Like No Other: AFL 2020. He spoke candidly of the toll the game’s shutdown took on his squad, which was in the midst of a major transformation from that which made three Grand Finals in five years between 2012 and 2106. As the father of three teenagers, he had a keen understanding of what sort of feedback and connection they might be seeking during an incredibly stressful and demanding period.

“I had to move quickly into connection mode through platforms I hadn’t used that much, like Zoom,” he said. “There was a WhatsApp group and I started bantering with the players with some light heartedness to keep the connection going with them. “I put myself out there a bit and made myself look stupid, but I wanted to nail myself to the cross in a sense to say this is what this platform is for boys, to keep us connected.” By doing that, he laid the groundwork for the hub period that followed. The Swans didn’t win many games, but the bonds were firmly established and the foundations for this year established. Add the injection of some more talented kids, shrewd recruiting (Tom Hickey) and the addition of Pyke to the coaching staff, and you begin to understand why Sydney has been so successful this year and why magical performances occur such as that against the Giants, when three players were withdrawn from the side less than hour before the game because of COVID reasons. So, to the AFL coaches who might be reading, that is why Longmire is your coach of the year and you must vote accordingly. And while I have your attention, make sure Clarkson wins it next year in his final year at Hawthorn, so that that anomaly is finally put to bed.
