News from in and around the AFL

AFL’S QUICK ACTION SAVES THE DAY AGAIN

We found a lot of roadblocks in our efforts to make it work SAM MITCHELL AFTER LAST WEEK’S CHANGE OF PLANS TO HAWTHORN’S COACHING HANDOVER

CRISIS AVERTED: The vacant Marvel Stadium was able to accommodate two of the three games relocated from Queensland last weekend.

T

ASHLEY BROWNE

MICHAEL LOVETT

EDITOR’S LETTER

he AFL has long been in the stadium business. It started almost 60 years ago with the purchase of 86 hectares of land in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs, which later became VFL Park, through to Marvel Stadium, which now sits on the western fringe of the Melbourne CBD in the Docklands precinct. It makes the AFL unique among major global sporting organisations and the envy of some, especially the NRL. And while the AFL’s property play has underpinned the financial health of the game for decades, it has also helped deliver immediate practical solutions when the game really needs it. Like last weekend. There were three games scheduled for Queensland, but a spike in COVID cases last Saturday sent the southeast of the state into immediate lockdown. That day’s Gold Coast-Melbourne and Essendon-Sydney games and the next day’s GWS Giants-Port Adelaide game were first postponed and then relocated back to Victoria. The vacant MCG picked up the Bombers-Swans game, while Marvel Stadium was able to comfortably accommodate the

Suns-Demons clash and then the Giants and the Power. It was all sorted out within a few hours, with the AFL’s stadium ownership a huge factor. It also set up an unusual and super Sunday, with five games played and all with ramifications for the make-up of the eight. The Demons and Suns kicked off the round and Melbourne showed no ill effects from having spent nearly seven hours on a plane the day before, with a 98-point thrashing that helped cement its place in the top four and snapped a few weeks of mildly concerning form.

u As far as bizarre 24-hour periods go in football, it would be hard to beat the goings on between about noon last Friday and late morning the following day. At 10.36am on Friday, Hawthorn sent out a media re-lease announcing that coach Alastair Clarkson’s planned press conference would be rescheduled. But then the jungle drums started beating

that more major upheaval was about to unfold in the coaching ranks at Hawthorn. And so it panned out – the uncomfortable and messy handover from Clarkson to Sam Mitchell at the end of 2022 would now fast-forward to the end of the 2021 season. ‘Clarko’ was not the only long-serving coach to move on that day. Gary Ayres, who had built great respect and won

Melbourne showed no ill effects of having spent seven hours on a plane

Next up was Brisbane’s trip to Launceston to meet Hawthorn. If the Hawks were fragile after the tumultuous week in which legendary coach Alastair Clarkson’s departure was confirmed, they didn’t show it and led by nearly nine goals before winning by 12 points. The Lions have now lost three of their past four and are two games adrift of the top four. Essendon and Sydney played one of the games of the season at the MCG. The second half in particular was a throwback to the 1990s as

much admiration as a loyal and flag-waving servant of Port Melbourne in the VFL, was given his marching orders. The next day we awoke to news of another COVID outbreak in southern Queensland which caused three matches scheduled at the Gabba and Metricon Stadium to be moved to Victoria on Sunday. It meant Melbourne players, who were in the air flying to the

Gold Coast when a three-day lockdown was announced, had to return to Victoria immediately upon landing in Queensland. The Demons did well to win easily the following day. All up they were in the air for seven hours, but spare a thought for Gold Coast and Southport players who were nine minutes into the first quarter of their VFL clash only to be told it’s game over! ONE WEEK at a TIME the ball zipped from end to end and the Swans’ seven-point win catapulted them ahead of Brisbane into fifth spot. The action then moved to Optus Stadium, a pulsating affair in which Fremantle, minus stars Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters, held off Richmond by four points in one of the club’s best wins for many years. The Tigers seemed to kick into gear – at last – in the final term and hit the front, but the Dockers kicked the last two goals to move into the eight and drop the Tigers to 11th spot. The Power comfortably held off the Giants in the Marvel Stadium nightcap to strengthen their grip on a top-four berth and tip the Giants back out of the eight. That’s now five straight weeks that a different team has been in eighth place and it is resembling a game of pass the parcel. One lucky team will be sitting in eighth when the music stops at the end of round 23, although given West Coast’s poor form, seventh place might yet be up for grabs as well. What last weekend did demonstrate was that the AFL has its patented flexibility and agility down to a fine art.

DRESSED TO THRILL: Wearing their retro guernsey, the Dockers held off the Tigers by four points to move into the eight with one of their best wins of recent times.

The League was able to get the Suns, Demons, Power, Bombers and Swans on to planes and out of Queensland just before the region was shut down and in a couple of hours, then made the requisite arrangements in Victoria with the MCG and its broadcasters. But what the snap lockdown also demonstrated was that

the AFL should not be too hasty in making arrangements for this year’s finals series and the Grand Final. With COVID and especially this Delta variant, much can change – and very quickly. It would be guesswork at this stage to try and plan what might happen.

NAB AFL Rising Star HAYDEN YOUNG FREMANTLE

F

remantle was delighted to grab Hayden Young with the seventh pick at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft and saw enough from his first five games last year, before a season-ending ankle injury, to know it had a player. Just three games into this year, he suffered a significant hamstring strain and last Sunday’s game against Richmond was just his second back in the side. But he is busy making up for lost time, and he had 23 disposals, three marks and a tackle in the nail-biting four-point win over the Tigers that propelled the Dockers back into the eight with three games remaining. “I was really pleased. Obviously, I’ve missed a lot of footy, so I’m just really grateful to be back and playing,” Young told fremantlfc.com.au after the game. “First and foremost, I just had a lot of fun today, which was really good and I thought my game reflected that.” Originally from Somerville on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula and drafted from the Dandenong Stingrays, he is the younger brother of North Melbourne’s Lachie Young. ll good things must come to an end and for Hawthorn and Alastair Clarkson, that time will come in three weeks. The senior coaching handover from Clarkson to Sam Mitchell, which was supposed to take place at the end of 2022, will instead happen at the end of this season after it became quickly apparent that the 12-month changeover period was untenable. “It’s my view the footy club needs to free itself from my shadow,” Clarkson said late last

Friday on the boundary line at Waverley Park, from where he plotted one of the greatest periods of dominance in the game’s history. Clarkson steered the Hawks to the premiership in 2008 and then three more from 2013 to 2015. “We’ve come to the realisation that this footy club needed some fresh air from 2022 onwards,” he said. “I’m going to step aside from coaching the Hawthorn footy club at the end of this year. I’ve had my time in the sun, and I’ve had a blast.”

It was during a series of meetings early last week that it became clear there would be too much confusion and not enough clear direction, with Clarkson focused on immediate team goals and Mitchell thinking more long term. It was the players who raised particular concerns about mixed messaging. “We don’t want any confusion,” Clarkson said. “We want to know who’s driving the bus, and this guy (Mitchell) is driving the bus. The players need one bloke leading the charge.” Clarkson’s name has been linked to the vacant Collingwood coaching job, and in a nice little twist, his Hawks meet the Magpies at UTAS Stadium this weekend. It would also be surprising if Clarkson hasn’t already taken a phone call from Carlton, even though David Teague remains in charge and before the findings of a football department review are announced. But the more likely outcome is that Clarkson takes at least 12 months off while his son completes his final year of school. There may be more job openings in the AFL coaching world in 2023, although by then he might be able to resume his regular overseas jaunts to network with some of the leading coaches in world sport. “I’m just going to take a breather. Right at the present time, my commitment is to have a spell and see where 2023 will take me,” he said. There is reasonable evidence to suggest the Hawks needed to move on from their legendary coach. Their past three seasons have been hugely disappointing. But the handling by the club of this transformative moment was shambolic, with Hawthorn president Kennett and his board savaged by the media but, more to the point, by the club’s members and supporters who universally agree Clarkson deserves a more dignified exit. “This is a momentous moment in the life of a football club,” Kennett said. “And we hope that as a result of the goodwill that’s been shown by all parties, we now have clear air. We have clean air, we have clarity, and we can move on. “I don’t think we’ve misled the members, we’ve done what we think is the right thing ... it hasn’t worked ... I accept responsibility for that.”

CAT ON THE ATTACK

Cam Guthrie has taken his breakout 2020 season to another level in 2021. ASHLEY BROWNE caught up with the Geelong midfielder ahead of his 200th game.

F

rom every crisis comes an opportunity. And for Cam Guthrie, it was last year’s 81-day AFL shutdown brought upon by the COVID pandemic. It was an unusually timed break, coming one week after the start of the season, which for Geelong was a 32-point loss to the GWS Giants and for Guthrie it led to a long and meaningful period of introspection. “As strange as it sounds, the break might have come at a good time for me,” Guthrie told the AFL Record ahead of his 200th game this weekend. “We lost that game and I probably wasn’t really satisfied with my performance. But then came this long break that you usually only have when you’re injured, so I had lot of time to think about what I wanted to get out of the year.

10  AFL RECORD

“Things were changing and we had to be pretty adaptive and I saw that as an opportunity to get a leg up at a time when others might have been unsure what was going to happen.” By embracing change and looking at the positives of the situation – not COVID itself – Guthrie set himself up for what he described as a “modest season”, although the reality was that it was far, far better than that. Guthrie won Geelong’s best and fairest and earned his first All-Australian blazer. Best known before then as a run-with midfielder, Guthrie grabbed with both hands the opportunity presented by Tim Kelly’s move to West Coast to become a more offensive midfielder. “I decided I wanted to be a really good AFL player or certainly at least strive to be a really good AFL player and not accept being just a role player,” he said. “I believed I could be more than that and hopefully help the team and help us achieve our team goals.” Even allowing for the 20 per cent reduction in game time last season, Guthrie’s average disposals a game jumped from 18.4 to 20.3. This year, it is up to 29.9. It wasn’t that he had more time through the midfield last season, but that he had more opportunity to directly impact the play from an offensive standpoint. “At times it’s hard for all six or seven midfielders who spin through there to play well every week,” he said. “There’s only a certain amount of ball to go around and a certain amount of time to make an impact.” Hunting the opposition brought out the competitor in him. Guthrie was one of the best in the game in that department. “I’ve been able to win more of the ball in the last couple of years, which has been great, but I feel like my entire framework has been trying to have an impact, be that blocking for a teammate, defensive pressure and then winning the ball.” Guthrie is one of the least affected players in the AFL. He is part of a fine football family with his father Andrew a

six-game player for Fitzroy and Essendon, younger brother Zach a 29-game player for the Cats and oldest brother Ben a well-known football journalist. If not for the almost weekly ritual of changing from the short-sleeved to the long-sleeved jumper after half-time, he might totally fly under the radar. “I try not to get too high with the positives, too low with the negatives and try to find that middle ground,” he said. Still, in his understated way, the 28-year-old was thrilled with last year’s gongs, even if they were tempered with the disappointment of the Grand Final loss to Richmond. “Winning a club best and fairest is pretty nice,” he said. “I look up at my locker and see that accolade and the All-Australian is the closest you get to national representation in our sport, if that makes sense, and you only have to look at the players who have done it in the past and that’s pretty special.”

AFL RECORD PROMOTION

A LIFE CHANGED FOREVER

Brett Ratten is leading a campaign to get people to ‘band together’ to promote safer roads.

HEART-BROKEN: St Kilda coach Brett Ratten reflects on son Cooper’s tragic death.

I

t was a foggy winter night in August 2015. Hawthorn assistant coach Brett Ratten was sound asleep having helped guide the Hawks to victory against Geelong earlier that night. His son Cooper had been staying at Yarra Glen in Melbourne’s outer east after the local under-18s side had qualified for finals – the first time the team had done so in about 12 years, according to Ratten. Cooper was a proud member of the team. At 5.15am, Ratten heard a knock on the door. It was a moment that would change his life forever. “There was a police officer there. I thought, ‘Well what’s going on?’” he said.

12  AFL RECORD

SEN.com.au

Cooper had been in a car accident, and within minutes of the police officer arriving at Ratten’s door, Cooper passed away at the hands of a speeding driver. His tragic death impacted every person in his life – his friends, his family, his club, his entire community. “It’s changed our life forever … the ripple effect that it has not just on me, but my kids, my wife, nephews, nieces, grandparents, the list goes on … we just wish we could be with him,” Ratten, now senior coach at St Kilda, said. And that’s exactly why Ratten is calling on everyone to band together for safer roads this TAC and AFL Victoria Road Safety Round. “I’m wearing my band for Cooper, we miss him, not just me but my whole

We miss him, not just me but my whole family BRETT RATTEN

family. You know, there will be many people who wear the band for someone special, and we’re all wearing it for you Coop,” Ratten said. This weekend, AFL Victoria, TAC and Ratten are inviting you to wear a blue armband and share your reason for championing the cause. Perhaps it’s for someone who is here, your mum, your sister, your son, or your whole team, or perhaps it’s for someone who is no longer with us. Join us and help eliminate deaths and serious injuries in Victoria so stories like Cooper’s never have to be experienced or read about again. has produced some impressive performances during his short career. But none more so than against Richmond last Sunday as the Dockers edged back into the eight with a hard-fought four-point win at Optus Stadium. Brayshaw racked up career-highs in disposals (39), tackles (12) and clearances (eight) and had 10 score involvements in a colossal showing against the Tigers. He also had 11 touches and five clearances when the game was on the line in the final term. It prompted Garry Lyon to compare his display to that of a vintage Joel Selwood performance, with the Geelong captain so often taking charge whenever the Cats have needed him to. “If he (Brayshaw) was here in Victoria, the rave reviews on him would be along the Joel Selwood raves,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast. “That’s how good he is, this kid. “The Andrew Brayshaw performance would sit comfortably in any of Joel Selwood’s. “The game is in the balance, Richmond are coming, everything’s happening. “When that happened at Geelong, you just go, ‘watch Joel’. “Andrew Brayshaw did that – he could have been the No. 14 for Geelong, that’s how good he was. “I can give him no higher praise.” ANDREW SLEVISON

n keeping with his last name, Ollie Wines just gets better with age. After bursting on to the scene in 2013, the Port Adelaide star has taken his game to another level with the 2021 season confirming he is among the best midfielders in the AFL. He is the one the Power have turned to and he leads his club in disposals (615), contested

possessions (277) and inside 50s (102) and is second in clearances (117) and tackles (81). Those statistics have him on track to make his first All-Australian team and he is also one of the leading fancies for this year’s Brownlow Medal. Wines has been a key component of Port Adelaide’s midfield since the Power snapped him up with the No. 7 pick in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft. Wines came through the talent pathway system, ticking all the boxes along the way. He enjoyed a superb NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in 2012

for Vic Country and made the All-Australian team. From Echuca in northern Victoria, Wines had to uproot and move to Adelaide as a teenager and understandably there was speculation that one day he would return to Victoria. But he has remained loyal to Port, and last November Wines agreed to a new four-year contract extension which takes him through to the end of the 2026 season. There have been a couple of setbacks along the journey, notably a shoulder injury he suffered in an off-season mishap in 2019, but he is back to his bullocking best. Despite being relieved of co-captaincy duties after that season, Wines has shown tremendous leadership qualities and is one player the Power will be counting on come September.

BLUE HEAVEN IN GRUDGE MATCH

O

ur game has certainly evolved over the years, both physically and technically, with the intensity and player demands higher than ever. In-depth analysis of play is key to both athlete and team performance and being able to communicate this analysis effectively is critical. Modern-day graphical analysis software such as Ross Video’s PIERO plays a big part in an AFL team’s coaching department. Over the next few weeks in the AFL Record, we’re going to be using Ross Video’s PIERO to bring these moments to you. This week we feature Carlton’s Harry McKay who was the last chain in a great piece of team play as the Blues downed their old rival Collingwood in round 14.

Liam Stocker marks from the kick-out, and then spots Jack Silvagni who takes a hanger on the wing.

ANSWER MAN If the Bulldogs finish on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season, will it be for the first time in the club’s history?

with LACHLAN ESSING TOP DOGS: The Bulldogs are on track to finish on top of the ladder for the first time; (below) the Power held top spot for the entire 2020 season.

T. GRACE, BLACKBURN, VIC LE: Anything is still possible from now until the end of round 23, but if the Dogs stay on course, then yes it will be the first time. The Dogs have waited the longest time in AFL/VFL history to do so – since 1925! The previous record was held by St Kilda, taking 68 years before finishing minor premier for the first time in 1965. Three other teams have also never finished on top – the Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns and GWS Giants. Collingwood has finished on top the most, doing it 19 times, followed by Carlton and Essendon with 17 each. Melbourne has the best success rate for claiming premierships from the top of the ladder, winning eight of nine Grand Finals. North Melbourne, St Kilda, Adelaide and Fremantle have the worst records from top spot, with none claiming the flag. Across history, seven teams have held top spot for an entire season – Fitzroy (1904), Collingwood (1915), Essendon (1923), Geelong (1953),

West Coast (1991), Essendon (2000) and Port Adelaide (2020). Only three won the premiership, with the other four either finishing runner-up or missing the Grand Final. It just goes to show, you don’t win the premiership until the real games begin in September!

CAN YOU ASSIST? u The AFL is seeking information on the following past players – Jack Allister (Essendon/North Melbourne 1938-45), Norm Betson (Essendon 1940-45), Jack Caesar (Essendon 1938-42), Syd Carmen (Essendon 1926-33), Jack Cassin (1936-47), Tom Clarke (Essendon 1927-34), Len Pye (Fitzroy 1934-35), Fred Williams (Fitzroy/Carlton 1920-32), Stan Wright (Fitzroy 1940-46), Reg Humphries (South Melbourne 1934-39), Ted Johnson (South Melbourne 1923-31), Brian Kelly (South Melbourne 1939-45), Billy King (South Melbourne 1940-48) and Alan Linden (South Melbourne 1941-47).

If you can assist, contact Col Hutchinson at col.hutchinson@afl.com.au.

u William ‘Bill’ Pearson was a goalkicking phenomenon in the Victorian amateurs during the 1930s. Recruited from Scotch College, Pearson played eight seasons with Old Scotch Collegians from 1931-37 and briefly in 1946, kicking 1035 goals in 138 games at 7.5 a game.

In his debut season, he kicked 95 goals, followed by 126 in 1932 and 168 in 1933. His achievements during the 1934 season were remarkable, finishing with 220 goals, including a bag of 30 against Yarra Park and 24 against University Blacks. Pearson set the stage for his massive haul against Yarra Park with 10 goals in the first 15 minutes, with Old Scotch going on to win 40.28 (268) to 7.6 (48). He also hit the post four times. Pearson played in his fourth successive premiership with the club that season. Old Scotch’s game plan was to “kick it to Pearson”. It’s claimed teammates were so confident of his goalkicking that they would return to the centre as he was having a set shot. MARK GENGE

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK

ROWAN MARSHALL

u Racking up his ninth score over 120 for the year, Jack Steele (162) is the safest captain option for Fantasy teams due to his super-impressive stat lines each week. The Saints co-captain leads the League in tackles by a significant margin and added another 14 against Carlton which accounted for 56 points of his round-high score. Crunching the numbers, if Steele can top 150 for the next three rounds, he could be the first player to be valued at $1m in Fantasy Classic.

Mills was impressive after spending a fortnight isolating. Similarly, Rowan Marshall (139) had missed the past two rounds and justified being the most traded-in player for round 20. Adam Cerra (138) has

TREY RUSCOE COLL, FWD – 102 u Playing a role in defence since being recalled, Ruscoe has looked composed with the ball in his hands and his teammates are certainly happy to give it to him! He took nine marks to go with his 22 disposals in Collingwood’s win over West Coast. His 102 added to 77 and 66 in the fortnight before. CONOR NASH HAW, FWD – 95 u Attending half of the Hawks’ centre bounces, the Irishman finished the game with nine tackles.

3

JACK PAYNE BL, DEF – 92 u It looked like his day was done in the third quarter, but he returned to score 37 points in the last.

NED REEVES HAW, RUC – 85 u Shouldering the majority of the ruck load, Reeves laid seven tackles to go with his 31 hit-outs.

u Common sense prevailed at the Blues and he was used as an inside mid as opposed to full-forward where he had a shocker the week before. Returned to great form, scoring 109, which gives him a BE of 77. ALSO CONSIDER: Brayden Fiorini, Clayton Oliver, James Peatling

19 win over Hawthorn. Matthew Nicks’ outfit was competitive at times, but overall was not in the same class as the Bulldogs. That’s likely to be the case in this one against the Power, who are clearly a better side and will be looking to bank another win on their way to September. The Crows will need to play above themselves to cause an upset, which is entirely possible, but it appears unlikely given what’s at stake for Port. The Power still have a home final on the agenda and should tick this off with minimal fuss to cement their standing in the top quartet of teams. ANDREW SLEVISON

GOODER

Playing footy is good. Playing in gear made for you? That’s gooder.

SUBMIT YOUR SUGGESTION

When someone suggested that local women’s teams were running around wearing men’s hand-me-downs, we thought; that’s not good for footy! That’s why Toyota is giving 100 grassroots clubs around the country brand new uniforms designed specifically for women, so they can play with pride and confidence. At Toyota, we’re determined to make the game better for the entire footy community, and we need your help. So whether you play it, coach it, watch it or just love it, we want to hear your suggestions. Visit toyota.com.au/gooder to share your ideas and we’ll make the best ones happen. Now that’s Good for Footy!

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Eagles’ tailspin a telling tale The demise of West Coast in 2021 could have major ramifications come season’s end.

S

hannon Hurn deserved better, much better, than the dross delivered by his West Coast teammates at the MCG last Saturday evening. It was his 300th game. He became the first West Coast player to reach the magical milestone, having earlier this season left Dean Cox in his wake as the club’s games record-holder. Hurn is about as low key as they come. As we detailed in last week’s AFL Record, he is never happier than relaxing with his mates, preferably with a fishing rod in one hand and, we suspect, a refreshing beverage in the other. Those mates let him down badly last weekend, kicking just one goal in the opening half against Collingwood and losing by 45 points. It was a diabolical performance in which the Eagles laid just 32 tackles. It was a bruise-free embarrassment. And it is likely to be picked apart by a supporter base whose disenchantment is growing by the week. They’ve had it pretty good over the years, thanks to a cavalcade of stars to wear the blue and gold, a penchant for selecting the right coach and just about the most fearsome home-ground advantage in the competition. The Eagles are less than three years removed from their magnificent 2018 premiership

94  AFL RECORD

triumph and the core of that team is well intact. Indeed, on paper, it might be even better with Nic Naitanui, who was injured in 2018 but by many measures is now the best ruckman in the AFL, as well as midfield tyro Tim Kelly and rising key forward star Oscar Allen. And remember, Andrew Gaff missed the 2018 party due to a late-season brain-fade and resultant eight-game suspension. It is a list laden with ball magnets, clearance specialists, lockdown and intercept defenders and dominant forwards, both marking and crumbing. But it hasn’t come together in any shape or form this year. As last week’s abysmal tackle count demonstrated the Eagles don’t seem to want to get their hands dirty and play hard defence. And while they have an abundance of classy midfielders, they lack genuine speed through the midfield. It might explain why coach Adam Simpson doesn’t have a different switch he can flick when games aren’t working out for them. Against the Magpies, the Eagles were cut up through the centre corridor in the opening quarter. They were able to arrest that in the second term, but were caught out trying to play down the flanks. There was no courage, no throwing caution to the wind to play some breakneck footy down the centre of the ground. Not having a real Plan B has become a millstone around Simpson’s neck. That defeat adds to the sorry tale that is West Coast’s season.

CELEBRATIONS SOURED: Shannon Hurn’s 300-game milestone was spoilt by the Eagles’ embarrassing loss to Collingwood.

The Eagles blew fourth-quarter leads earlier in the year against the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda, both at Marvel Stadium. They were monstered twice at Geelong, once by the Cats and later by Sydney in a game transferred from the SCG. They’ve been beaten at home by Essendon and bottom-placed North Melbourne and were thrashed by the Bulldogs. Hence the growing anxiety in the west that the window for a second premiership for this group might now be shut. Change is coming to West Coast, with Hurn and champion full-forward Josh Kennedy both looking at retirement come the end of the season. But there will be deeper cuts to the list. Does Simpson need to shake it up by trading, say Dom Sheed or Gaff, to free some cap space and to go back to the draft? The Eagles gave up much of their 2019 and 2020 draft hand to bring Kelly to the club from Geelong, but they seem further way from a flag now than they were then. They’re not coming for Simpson just yet. The 2018 flag has afforded him plenty more currency and, besides, the Eagles are still more likely than not to play finals this year. But they’re unlikely to inflict any damage if they do make it to September and for West Coast people that won’t be acceptable. Life at the Eagles needs to become a bit uncomfortable which will make them and their coach an interesting watch come October.
