EDITOR’S LETTER

elbourne sat patiently in its West Australian quarantine hotel last weekend watching as first Geelong and then the Western Bulldogs blew their opportunities to cement top spot on the ladder with two weeks of the home and away season remaining. That patience was rewarded at Optus Stadium last Monday night, and the nine-point win over the free-falling West Coast catapulted the Demons back on top of the ladder and sparked fresh hopes among the faithful that maybe, just maybe, the 57-year premiership drought is ready to be broken. It was the first time they have won consecutive games since rounds 11 and 12. It was the final act of a weekend that confirmed the 2021 premiership will be won not by a super team, but by one which can get on a roll in September and paper over the cracks as best they can. The Cats lost just their 13th of 111 games at GMHBA Stadium since the Joel Selwood era began in 2007, beaten by 19 points by the depleted GWS Giants last Friday night. Less than 48 hours later at Marvel Stadium, the Western Bulldogs failed to capitalise on a bright start against Essendon and

lost by 13 points, with a career-best seven-goal haul to Peter Wright inflicting much of the damage. Both the Cats and Dogs emerged from their games with significant injury concerns. Patrick Dangerfield suffered a throat injury after a clash with Toby Greene which resulted in the volatile Giants forward being placed on report. Gary Rohan (leg) and Zach Tuohy (hamstring) also finished the evening on the bench. Chris Scott chose to manage in-form speedster Isaac Smith, a decision he might have wished he’d walked back, although the imminent return of gun forward Jeremy Cameron will ease some concerns at the Cattery.

u With the Olympic Games providing a welcome distraction for many of those in lockdown over the past fortnight, last Sunday’s closing ceremony in Tokyo means the sporting spotlight returns to the AFL. The AFL must now plot its way through the next few weeks and get to the September 25 finish line – and that is no easy task. The tricky part is locking in a Grand Final venue. You get the

feeling the League is determined it should return to the MCG with Commission chairman Richard Goyder saying last weekend an all-Victorian Grand Final deserved to be played at the ‘G. But there are other forces in play. First, the AFL is contractually bound to hold the Grand Final at the MCG until 2058 (an extra year was put on the previous 2057 expiration after last

Maybe, just maybe, the 57-year premiership drought is ready to be broken

The damage at the Dogs is more concerning. Key forward Josh Bruce tore his ACL in the dying moments of the loss and won’t play again this year. Big defender Alex Keath is also sidelined until the finals, meaning coach Luke Beveridge must negotiate a tricky final fortnight of the home and away season against the suddenly pesky Hawthorn and fellow premiership aspirant Port Adelaide without his bookends. The Power are entrenched in the top four, but not without suffering a scare of their own, needing a three-goals-to-one final term to overcome Adelaide by four points in a low-scoring but nonetheless absorbing Showdown.

year’s Grand Final was played at the Gabba). Then we must ask where does the Victorian Government sit on the issue? Premier Daniel Andrews and Martin Pakula will be driving this one and given the latter’s title is Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, you’d imagine the thought of losing the Grand Final two years running would not sit comfortably.

Some might argue that Victoria has already lost the 2021 Australian Grand Prix and Moto GP, but both events come with greater logistical challenges in terms of travel and quarantine. Pakula, in particular, has the ear of AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan. You’d expect the line of communication between the two to be cranking up over the next few weeks. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME The bottom half of the eight is equally in a state of flux. The Giants had 18 players on their injury list as they headed down to Geelong last Friday, but they led most of the night, thanks to a masterful four-goal haul from Greene and a brand of tough, physical footy all over the ground. Richmond beat North Melbourne last Saturday – just its second win in eight games – to set up a monstrous clash with the Giants on Friday night. The loser likely won’t make the finals, with Fremantle in contention and Essendon coming home hard. The Dockers blew their chance to consolidate a place in the eight with a meek performance at home to the Lions, but the Bombers were the talk of the town, after finally taking the scalp of a premiership fancy, not that coach Ben Rutten was buying any of the hype. “It’s not something I need to talk about (with the players),” he said post-game. “We know that the finals are looming at this stage of the season and every team that still has the capacity to make the finals are doing that.”

STILL IN CONTENTION: Peter Wright was the toast of the Bombers after kicking seven goals straight in the win over the Western Bulldogs.

AUSKICKER WEEK 21

OF THE St Kilda, somehow, is still in the hunt after a strong 29-point win over Sydney at Marvel Stadium. The Saints would have beaten the Swans in Sydney earlier this year if not for errant kicking, with Jack Higgins (1.6) the main culprit.

How fitting then that he kicked four straight this time around. And you can finally scratch Carlton from finals calculations. With it all to play for, the Blues turned up their toes, losing to Gold Coast by 19 points, further turning the screws on senior coach David Teague.

NAB AFL Rising Star GIANT’S INJURY OPENS DOOR FOR BIG DEMON

T

om Green’s hamstring setback, one of 18 injuries listed by the GWS Giants last week, might have thrown a wrench in the hopes of the young midfielder winning the NAB AFL Rising Star Award in 2021. Green was the warm favourite to become the first Giants player to win the Ron Evans Medal, but he has been overtaken by second-year Melbourne big man Luke Jackson. According to the bookies, the award is now a race in two, with Sydney’s Justin McInerney, Port Adelaide’s Mitch Georgiades and Melbourne’s James Jordon rounding out the top five, but all are in double-figure odds. Given the stark choice between a true midfielder and a key-position player, it will be interesting to see which way the selectors go. Eight of the past 10 winners have been midfielders, with key defender Daniel Talia (2012) and full-forward Jesse Hogan (2015) the exceptions. The Brownlow Medal has long been an award for midfielders and that is likely to be the case again this year. Can the Rising Star change tack? ASHLEY BROWNE

he Sydney Swans have made the SCG their home since 1982 and the ground has since become synonymous with AFL football, and cricket, of course. The SCG has been the venue for major sporting fixtures for more than 150 years, but it is a little known fact that the first intercolonial football match of any code played on the ground was Australian Football.

It was way back in 1881 when NSW hosted Victoria on August 6. The Victorians easily won 9.17 to 1.6, however, only goals were counted in this period. It was a return match as NSW and Victoria had played its first intercolonial game at the MCG on June 1, which the home team won 9.24 to 0.1. The attendance was estimated at 5000, which The Sydney Morning Herald (August 8, 1881) reported

GOOD OMEN FOR HERO LONGMIRE Former Western Bulldogs and Sydney Swans defender NEIL CORDY recalls playing for NSW in the 1990 win over Victoria at the SCG.

u It’s little wonder John

Longmire ended up at the SCG coaching the Swans – the good vibes at the venue started there long before he arrived as an assistant coach in 2001. Eleven years earlier, when he was playing for North Melbourne, his eight-goal haul led NSW to a historic 10-point win over Victoria. On a wet and miserable Sydney night, the kid from Corowa could not be contained as he dominated some of the best defenders of

a generation, including Stephen Silvagni, Danny Frawley and Chris Langford. Longmire’s inspiration that night came from his teammates, in particular the Danihers. “What really made an impact for me that night was playing alongside all four Daniher brothers – Terry, Neale, Anthony and Chris,” Longmire said. Also playing for NSW was a 19-year-old Wayne Carey, who had played just 12 senior games for North Melbourne.

was “… the largest concourse of spectators that ever attended a football match in Sydney.” The NSW Football Association had only been formed the previous year, while the Victorians had been playing football since the late 1850s and had formed an association in 1877. The teams were: New South Wales – Kellett (capt), Randall, Nash, Young, Phillips, Clay, Martin, Terry, Jackson, Daly (East Sydney); O’Brien, Burns, Bull, Jackson, A. MacNamara, J. MacNamara, Pierce, Crisp, Hedger (Sydney); Bull (Petersham). Victoria – Austin (capt), Collins, Murphy, Robertson, Steadman (Geelong); Neely, Patterson, Weld, Ley (Hotham); Goer (vice-capt), Coventry, Spear, McIntosh (Carlton); Carter, Griffiths (Essendon); Dougall, Cody, Tindall, Dunn, Manderson (East Melbourne). Despite the strong support for the game in Sydney, a Victorian representative team did not play NSW at the SCG again until the ANFC National Carnival in 1914, and then again in the 1933 carnival. NSW lost both games, as it did for interstate matches there in 1948 and 1949. However, NSW finally triumphed over Victoria at the venue in the first State of Origin match in 1990, winning 13.8 (86) to 10.16 (76). STATE PRIDE: Former Roos star, now Sydney coach, John Longmire starred in NSW’s historic win over Victoria at the SCG in 1990.

purple reign YOUNG STARS TAKE FREO FORWARD

Fremantle’s rebuild is being driven by a trio of emerging talent – Andrew Brayshaw, Adam Cerra and Caleb Serong. ASHLEY BROWNE caught up with them on the eve of this week’s derby.

N

o Nat Fyfe. No Michael Walters. And seemingly for Fremantle, no hope as Richmond came hard and came fast in the final term at Optus Stadium two weeks ago. When the Tigers kicked nine points clear in the low-scoring encounter halfway through the final quarter, it shaped as another “close enough but not good enough” moment for the Dockers. But instead, they kicked two quick goals to reclaim the lead, then stared down the reigning premiers over the last few nerve-wracking minutes for one of the club’s best wins in a long time. And with nobody to turn to, except themselves, Fremantle’s young guns led the way. Andrew Brayshaw, with 39 disposals, 12 tackles and eight clearances (11 touches and five clearances in the final term alone) was immense, but fellow midfielders Adam Cerra and Caleb Serong, and emerging ruck powerhouse Sean Darcy were also terrific. The rebuild under second-year coach Justin Longmuir has been methodical, but it is the clear improvement of that quartet that

10

It’s a really exciting blend ANDREW BRAYSHAW ON THE DOCKERS’ YOUNG GROUP OF RISING STARS

gives the club optimism that good times are just around the corner with the proviso, of course, that the uncontracted Cerra chooses to stick with the club and not return home to Victoria. “It’s a really exciting blend,” said Brayshaw, who many believe is firming to be the club’s next captain. “Obviously ‘Fyfey’ and (David) Mundy are the leaders in there, with me, Adam, Caleb and Sean trying to learn little bits and pieces from them.” Fyfe and Mundy are not only exceptional footballers, but they’re generous with their knowledge. “I’ve learned a lot from those two,” Serong said. Especially the ever-present Fyfe. “We’ll get together for a coffee; he’s always there for us. He’s very generous with his time and has so much knowledge.” So how are the students faring? Brayshaw modestly says his development has been a “slow burn”, but his teammates are more effusive. “His last few minutes against Richmond were spectacular. He’s the type of player you want on your team,” Cerra said.

Serong has long rated Brayshaw as elite when it comes to tackling, lateral movement and getting from contest to contest. “But what has taken his game to the next level this year is his damage to the opposition when the ball is in his hands,” he said. Serong himself took the competition by surprise in 2020 and ended up winning the NAB AFL Rising Star Award. Opponents had all summer to study him, but he has relished his role as both a hunter and gatherer in the Dockers’ midfield. “When you are a player opponents come after, that has been a challenge for me but I have really enjoyed it,” he said. “I’m just trying to develop my game in every way and do what the team needs. “I value both sides of the game. I see myself being a two-way midfielder, not just a midfielder who wants to get touches.” Cerra is the interesting one. The uncertainty over his playing future hasn’t diminished his output and he remains an integral part of Fremantle’s engine room. The club has painted him a rosy future, through its

words and deeds, but for the 21-year-old, nothing past the end of this season matters for now. “I’ve been huge on living in the present. It’s what I’m doing now and have been doing all year,” he said. “We have a huge opportunity in front of us to play finals. It’s a real possibility and I’m focused day by day on what’s best for the team and to prepare the best I can for the weekend and not waste this opportunity.” Brayshaw, Serong and Cerra are fulsome in their praise of Darcy, who would take some beating for the most improved big man in the competition. He gives them what every midfielder craves – the first chance to win the ball at a stoppage. “When he’s standing there in packs taking these contested marks or shrugging guys off and kicking those massive goals, it makes us walk that bit taller. With him in the ruck it gives us a predictable contest to work to,” Serong said.

T

hey’re not shy about the ‘F’ word around Fremantle. Last week’s loss to Brisbane dropped the Dockers back down to 12th place with two games to go and they’ll now need to win both those and rely on some help to qualify. Fremantle hasn’t made finals since 2015 when a surprise home preliminary final defeat to Hawthorn ended what many believed to be the club’s best chance yet for a premiership. Supporters are impatient for a return to the finals, but so too are the players.

Optus Stadium was only half-full, with 30,000 fans there for the Richmond game, but such was the noise that the players on the ground and even on the bench could barely make themselves heard. They dare to dream what a home final will be like in the not-too-distant future. “There is nothing more I want than to be playing in September,” Brayshaw said. “It has taken us a while to jell but I have seen the growth over the last four years as a group and also players individually. “We are so keen and so eager to crack into the finals for the first time in a long time.” But to get there, the Dockers will likely have to get past the Eagles, their so-called big brother who have bossed them up and down the ground the past 11 times they’ve met.

ENGINE ROOM: Young midfield stars Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw (above left) and Adam Cerra (above) are leading Fremantle’s push for a finals berth, and played key roles in the win over Richmond in round 20 (below).

West Coast kicked nine goals to two after half-time in their clash earlier this year, a peculiar game played behind closed doors. The fans will be back this time, and it will Fremantle’s home game as well. The hype and the noise might well be double that of the Richmond game. “We were bullied by them and we didn’t step up,” Serong said. “But I think we’re in a better position to take them on this time.” For some at Fremantle, Richmond was its bogy team. But with the Tigers put paid to, the Eagles are firmly in their sights, which bodes well for a cracking derby. “They (the Eagles) are the only team since I’ve been at the club we haven’t beaten,” Brayshaw said. “It was Richmond, but we beat them, but jeez, you can sense that everyone who barracks for Freo is dying for us to win and the players feel it the just the same as the supporters.”

@hashbrowne

MUNDY’S NEW MARK u The stakes at Optus Stadium this

weekend will be massive, with Fremantle needing a win over crosstown rival West Coast to stay alive in what is a frantic, white-knuckle battle for eighth place. It will be a huge game, the first derby clash to be played in front of a crowd in two years. And to add to the occasion for Fremantle, it will mark the latest in David Mundy’s long list of achievements with the club when he plays his 353rd game, which will equal Matthew Pavlich’s games record. The 36-year-old has been in magnificent form all season and his

28-disposal game was one of the few bright spots in the Dockers’ 64-point loss to Brisbane last Sunday. Through 19 games this year he has averaged 24.9 touches. Only in the preliminary final year of 2015 has he averaged more. Mundy remains a key member of the Fremantle side and also serves as pretty much an on-field coach for Justin Longmuir, a former teammate. He was tied for 10th in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year heading into last weekend and has already signed a new deal to play again in 2022. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD

hen it comes to producing great footballers, few states can rival Tasmania as a breeding ground for champions of our game. In the second of a two-part series titled ‘Tassie Players We Love’ – proudly brought to you by Wilson Homes – we feature two of the five Tasmanian players who are Legends in the Australian Football Hall of Fame. A few weeks ago, we profiled two born-and-bred Tasmanian superstars – Darrel Baldock and Royce Hart – and an icon of the game in Roy Cazaly, who coached and played in the Apple Isle after a celebrated VFL career. This week’s Legends are two of Tasmania’s greatest ever players – Peter Hudson and Ian Stewart.

look-in at the Gold Coast Suns. The 24-year-old key forward, who can also operate in the ruck, had shown plenty of promise over five seasons before injury and form ravaged his sixth year with the Suns. Essendon came calling to offer Wright a lifeline at the elite level and, although he was criticised by some earlier in the year, the bargain-basement trade has already paid off. Against the ladder-leading Western Bulldogs last Sunday, Wright eclipsed his previous best haul of five goals with a career-best seven in a scintillating 13-point win at Marvel Stadium. Wright kicked three goals in the second quarter as the Bombers piled on six, added a fourth in the third term and finished strongly with three more in the final quarter. The performance was lauded by teammate Zach Merrett, who was thrilled to see him reap the rewards. “I think he was pigeon-holed a little bit up there and Gold Coast had so much talent and so many young kids come through. He probably got pushed aside a little bit,” Merrett said on SEN Breakfast. “It was nice for him to actually get a bit of reward for effort and take some marks. “He has been super reliable all year in playing for the team, but it was nice that he kicked some goals himself.” Wright took seven marks, had nine score involvements and was able to pinch-hit in the ruck with nine hit-outs in the most dominant outing of his 84-game career. ike most things in life, AFL football is all about opportunities. In the case of St Kilda co-captain Jack Steele, there was no doubting his ability when he first came into the AFL system, but there were some roadblocks. A product of Belconnen in the ACT, he was drafted by the GWS Giants in 2014 – a no-brainer given he was on their doorstep and was already part of the Giants’ Academy program. But the issue for the young midfielder was that the Giants were laden with on-ball talent. Steele was competing with the likes of Stephen Coniglio, Dylan Shiel, Devon Smith, Adam Treloar, Callan Ward and Toby Greene and his two seasons (2015 and 2016) at the club yielded just 17 games. GWS knew Steele was a talent and a contested-ball specialist, but it agreed to a deal with St Kilda that saw the then 20-year-old traded to the Saints who gave the Giants a future second-round pick in return. For St Kilda, it proved to be a steal, if you pardon the pun. Now deep into his fifth season at the Saints, Steele

18

has been the one they have turned to with his leadership, contested ball and clearance work a standout. Steele leads St Kilda in disposals (576), contested possessions (276), inside 50s (97), clearances (123), tackles (174) and score involvements (118). His breakout season came in 2020 when he was a major factor in the Saints reaching their first finals series since 2011. He won the best and fairest, made the All-Australian team and finished equal third in the Brownlow Medal. Earlier this year, Steele was appointed co-captain and, at 25, looks set to lead the Saints for many years to come.

ur game has certainly evolved over the years, both physically and technically, with the intensity and player demands higher than ever. In-depth analysis of play is key to both athlete and team performance and being able to communicate this analysis effectively is critical. Modern-day graphical analysis software such as Ross Video’s PIERO plays a big part in an AFL team’s coaching department. The AFL Record is using Ross Video’s PIERO to bring these moments to you. This week we feature Hawthorn’s Tim O’Brien, who finished off a great piece of team play in the third quarter as the Hawks recorded an upset win over the Brisbane Lions in round 20.

ABOUT PIERO

u PIERO is an award-winning sports analysis tool from Ross Video. u PIERO uses image recognition or encoded camera heads to overlay tactical graphics on game play. u The comprehensive palette of effects delivers high-impact technical analysis for sports teams and broadcasters. u Professional and amateur teams use PIERO to improve coach-to-player communication and to review and prepare team strategy. u For broadcasters, PIERO gives them an elegant and easy way to visually analyse the game while offering cutting-edge opportunities to sponsors. u As well as offering PIERO, Ross Video powers sports broadcast and stadium technology around Australia and across the world. u Ross Video has a wide range of production solutions including video switchers, graphic engines, scoring and LED screen control, robotic cameras and more for everything from web streams to high-end broadcast facilities, local sporting grounds and the world’s biggest stadiums.

Advanced Analysis PIERO is built on a proprietary line and texture tracking algorithm that was co-developed with the BBC’s Research and Development department. The technology creates a seamless blend of graphics and video which maintains perspective and keeps graphics tied to the game as the camera moves. Coach-Player Communication PIERO helps sports clubs maximize coach-player communication efficiency. The system allows coaches to easily identify key moments from previous games with their players. They can then use this information to educate players and pinpoint areas of play that can be improved. Review and Prepare Strategy Using PIERO’s 3D replay system and wide range of effects, clubs can more effectively review past games and plan for those that are upcoming. Data visualizations and the tactical overview feature help coaches develop new, more in-depth plays and strategies with their players.

ANSWER MAN Harry McKay is poised to be Carlton’s first Coleman medallist since Brendan Fevola in 2009. Which club has had the longest drought between winners?

with MARK GENGE BLUE HEAVEN: Harry McKay is in line to become the Blues’ first Coleman medallist since Brendan Fevola (inset) in 2009.

C. LILBURNE, EDGEWATER, WA MG: The Coleman Medal is awarded to the player who kicks the most goals during the home and away season. Three clubs have not had a Coleman Medal winner – the Gold Coast Suns (10 years), Port Adelaide (25 years) and Fremantle (26 years). The Western Bulldogs have not had a winner since Simon Beasley with 93 goals in 1985 when the club was known as Footscray, a period of 36 years. He kicked seven goals in the first semi-final win over North Melbourne to reach the 100-goal milestone. Brian Taylor was Collingwood’s most recent winner, in 1986. Taylor kicked two goals in round 22 against St Kilda at VFL Park to finish with exactly 100 for the year. North Melbourne’s most recent winner was current Sydney Swans coach John Longmire who,

at 19, kicked 98 goals in 1990. His two biggest hauls for the season were 12.5 against Richmond in round two and a club-record 14.3 against Melbourne in round 14.

u Rod Tregenza was

a prolific goalkicker, kicking 1815 goals in 328 games for various clubs, including East Fremantle in the WAFL and South Adelaide in the SANFL. He was rookie-listed by North Melbourne in 2001, but a knee injury curbed his AFL career. He returned to South Mandurah in the Peel Football League in WA in 2006 and in the next eight seasons kicked at least 100 goals each year.

His finest year was in 2008 when he achieved one of the most prolific goalkicking seasons in history. In one game against Harvey, he had 41 possessions and kicked 27.6 in a team score of 46.20 (296). His other goal tallies that year included 22, 21, 16, 14, 13 (three times), 12 (three times) and 11. Tregenza reached the 200-goal milestone in round 17 and after 18 home and away matches had 223 to his name. He booted five in the first final, followed by 10 in the Grand Final as South Mandurah beat Mundijong by 137 points. He finished with a season tally to 238 goals from 20 games. MARK GENGE

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u If there’s one opposition team Tom Mitchell (157) is a lock as your Fantasy captain against, it’s the Pies. In his past seven games against Collingwood, he averages 146 points. Last week’s 44-disposal game was another stellar effort where he collected possessions at will. He took 10 marks, laid three tackles and kicked a goal to be the top scorer of the week. A total of 7.1 per cent of Fantasy Classic coaches named him as captain for maximum double points. Huge!

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

LACHLAN BRAMBLE HAW, MID/FWD – 94 u There are plenty of coaches still playing a rookie on-field and, if it’s Bramble, you’d be happy. The pre-season supplementary selection has found a home behind the ball and has used his pace to help collect plenty of possessions. Last week he had 25 disposals and seven marks to take his five-game average to 80. CONOR NASH HAW, FWD – 92 u Twenty disposals and five marks made it back-to-back scores of more than 90 thanks to his midfield role.

u A team isn’t complete unless it has the little Pig running through the midfield. His 157 last week shows why he is a ‘must-have’ for the last two weeks of finals, as does his five-week average of 132. He is worth every cent and should see a spike in his 22 per cent ownership.

u After a run of poor form, coaches couldn’t trade him fast enough. It proved premature, with the defender back on ‘kick-out’ duties and used much more to get some drive out of defence. He scored 116, his first triple-figure score since round 15.

u In a predictable act of Fantasy cruelty right in the middle of finals, Houston, one of the most traded-out players of the week due to a horrible run of form, decided to turn it on for 105. Round for Reach u Off the football field, the great Jim

Stynes devoted his life to helping young people believe in themselves and reach their full potential. He took pride in inspiring young Australians to get the most out of life. Stynes’ legacy lives on through the Reach Foundation. Through its unique workshops, Reach aims to help participants become confident and self-aware, while arming them with the tools to navigate life’s challenges. Workshops are 100 per cent youth-led, with a focus on the development of social and emotional wellbeing. Following a challenging 12 months, there are alarming levels of deteriorating mental health in young people, with many struggling to find their place in the world. More than ever before, they need a helping hand.

This Round for Reach, the Melbourne Football Club is encouraging the wider community to ‘Be Like Jim’ and support the nation’s youth. By donating $11, a nod to Stynes’ jumper number, you can help the Reach Foundation make a difference. All funds will support Reach in training and developing workshop facilitators, who will then assist and inspire young Australians, just like Stynes did. To make a donation, visit reach.org.au/roundfor-reach-2021. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  35

Power v Blues

ROUND

22

IT’S MINE: Willem Drew fends off Lachie Fogarty in the Power’s convincing 28-point win in round five.

HEAD to HEAD Played 34: Port Adelaide 20, Carlton 13, draws 1. Since 2016: Port Adelaide 5, Carlton 1. Most recent game: round 5, 2021, Port Adelaide d Carlton by 28 points at the MCG. Highest attendance: 51,599, round 22, 2014, at Adelaide Oval.

PORT ADELAIDE

Home record: 11-7-1 Away record: 9-6 Greatest winning margin: 103 points, round 22, 2014, at Adelaide Oval. Longest winning sequence: 5, round 4, 2002, to round 15, 2004; round 5, 2017, to round 5, 2021. Most goals in a game: 8, Warren Tredrea, round 7, 1998, at Princes Park.

Match Preview

u This clash brings together two teams whose fortunes are moving in different directions. Port Adelaide is entrenched in the top four and, if it can finish the season on a winning note, has every chance of grabbing a top-two berth and two finals at Adelaide Oval. Carlton is in the discussion for the most disappointing team of the season and last week’s loss to Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium, with so much to play for, added to its long list of underwhelming performances for the year. The Blues’ best hope of snatching the win here is that the Power come into this game physically and emotionally spent after the taxing Showdown win

CARLTON over the Crows last week. Port trailed for all but 20 minutes and had to dig deep to get the win. Aliir Aliir was the hero for the Power with a masterful 16-intercept performance and Carlton will need to find a way to work around him to get the ball to Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow to help them kick a winning score. The prospect of Marc Murphy’s 300th game makes this a big occasion for the Blues, but Port has it all to play for. ASHLEY BROWNE

Highest score: 26.13 (169), round 6, 2000, at Princes Park. Lowest score: 5.7 (37), round 22, 2014, at Adelaide Oval. Away record: 7-11-1 Home record: 6-9 Greatest winning margin: 91 points, round 6, 2000, at Princes Park. Longest winning sequence: 5, round 11, 2008, to round 11, 2011. Most goals in a game: 6, Brett Ratten, round 6, 2000, at Princes Park; Brendan Fevola, round 20, 2009, at AAMI Stadium; Andrew Walker, round 11, 2011, at AAMI Stadium.

Prediction: Port Adelaide by 21 points

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Bring on a ‘Super Sunday’ finale The AFL has the chance to fixture a big day of footy to finish the season.

T

he presentation and construction of the home and away season is something the AFL has consistently refined for many years. Thursday night games, staggered starts, traditional public holiday match-ups and, more recently, the floating fixture, are enhancements that have been welcomed by most supporters. But what the AFL has never quite nailed is the final round of the home and away season. Before the introduction of the pre-finals bye, clubs would approach round 22, as it was then, with varying degrees of seriousness, especially if their places in the eight were locked and loaded. In 2015, North Melbourne made nine changes – most non-compulsory – ahead of its final game of the season against Richmond and lost by 41 points at Marvel Stadium. Nine days later at the MCG, the Kangaroos, having made 10 changes, beat the Tigers by 17 points in a knockout elimination final. North supporters had no complaints whatsoever, but the AFL had integrity concerns, which is why the bye week was introduced before the finals. Has it worked? Many would argue that the benefits of a top-four finish have since been diminished.

102

The AFL has also struggled with the structure of the final round. Occasionally, it gets lucky, with games on the final Sunday – or as was the case last year, the final Monday night – of the home and away season helping shape the final eight. Round 22, 1987, back in the old days of the VFL, remains the gold standard for closing rounds. In the perfect world, the AFL would love to replicate the final day of the English Premier League, in which all 10 games kick off at the same time. The final minutes of the 2011-12 season, in which Manchester United thought it had won the title, only for Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp goal for Manchester City against QPR to deliver City its first title, was as magical and exciting as live sport can be. The NFL, the sports leader the AFL often aspires to emulate, clears out its final Sunday with 15 games spread through the early and late afternoon and the 16th game that night, and only announces the schedule the week before. But teams chasing the same play-off berth are scheduled to play games at the same time to reduce the number of dead rubbers. Traditionally, the AFL has left announcing its round 23 schedule as late as a couple of weeks before, using its best estimates to ensure that the Friday and Saturday night games, as well as those on Sunday, will determine the shape and composition of the final eight. But in this era of flexibility and agility, there is the opportunity for the AFL to recast the final Sunday of the season.

DEAD RUBBER: Assured of a finals berth in 2015, North Melbourne made nine changes to its team for the final game of the season against Richmond; (inset) Manchester City secured its first title in the final minutes of the 2011-12 English Premier League season.

It was as magical and exciting as live sport can be

And there is a precedent. There is no scope for an EPL-style nine games kicking off at the same time – as magnificent as that would be – but it was only a fortnight ago that the snap lockdown in Queensland caused a hasty reshuffling of the round 20 fixture, with two Saturday games postponed and instead played the following day. It meant five games on Sunday, a wonderful smorgasbord of football that began shortly after noon and didn’t finish until nearly 9pm. It clashed with the middle Sunday of the Olympics, but it didn’t really matter. Every game involved at least one finals aspirant and they all mattered. There is no reason why the AFL could not bring down the curtain on the home and away season next week in a similar fashion. Clubs have become accustomed to only a few days’ notice before their next game, so why not wait until the end of this round and announce a blockbuster ending to the season, one last ‘Super Sunday’, with five matches to finish the season, with the biggest game of all on the Sunday night. If the AFL can get the match-ups right, it would make a pretty special finale after what has already been an incredible home and away season. @hashbrowne
