FINALS PREVIEW

HISTORY IN THE MAKING A historic first AFLW match at the MCG headlines preliminary final weekend. NIC NEGREPONTIS

A

fter a week’s delay, the AFLW preliminary finals are now set – and the best four teams of the season are set to go at it. Melbourne and Adelaide have been biding their time, having essentially had a two-week bye, and will play Brisbane and Fremantle respectively. The Crows host the Dockers on Saturday afternoon at Adelaide Oval after Fremantle

proved too strong for North Melbourne in the qualifying final. After being ravaged by COVID towards the end of the season, the Dockers now have their pieces back in place and look as dangerous as they did at the start of the year. Brisbane demolished a Collingwood side which had 17 players impacted by COVID protocols. In the end, the Magpies limped to the line given the illness that swept through a locker room already missing key players Brianna Davey and Brittany Bonnici. The Lions will travel to Victoria to take on the Demons in the first AFLW game played on the MCG. TALL ORDER: Tahlia Hickie stretches for a mark in front of Kate Hore in the Lions’ loss to the Demons in a thriller in round seven.

PRELIMINARY FINAL 1 – SAT, APRIL 2

A

MCG, 12.40PM LOCAL TIME

fter six years, AFLW will make its debut on the hallowed turf of the MCG when Melbourne and Brisbane clash in a hotly-anticipated preliminary final. This may be the Demons’ best chance to win the flag after six seasons where they were right in the mix, but ultimately have fallen short. The additions of Tayla Harris and Olivia Purcell have given them extra star power this year, while Daisy Pearce has been at her best inside 50 as the organisational general. However, to be the best you have to beat the best, and their premiership quest goes through reigning premier Brisbane. The Lions have hit their stride, smashing Collingwood in the qualifying final after downing North Melbourne and West Coast in previous rounds. womens.AFL

FINALS PREVIEW They have adjusted to the loss of Kate Lutkins down back while remaining a potent attacking unit. These sides met in arguably the game of the season in round seven at Metricon Stadium, with Melbourne climbing off the canvas to overrun the Lions. Brisbane was in the middle of a tough stretch of games with short turnarounds and so it is hard to read too much into its second half collapse. Harris played her best game in Melbourne colours, kicking 2.2 to go with seven marks and helped lead the Demons to victory over her old side. This is a tough game to predict given we haven’t seen an AFLW game played on the wide expanses of the MCG. But it’s impossible to tip against the Lions given their form and their status as reigning premiers.

PREDICTION: Brisbane Lions by nine points DESPERATION: Eloise Jones gets a timely fist in to spoil Aine Tighe in the Crows’ narrow win over the Dockers in round eight.

PRELIMINARY FINAL 2 – SAT, APRIL 2

ADELAIDE OVAL, 2.10PM LOCAL TIME

C

an the Crows advance to another AFLW Grand Final and attempt to stamp themselves as the dominant team of the first era of AFLW or will a near full-strength Fremantle cause an upset? After being ravaged by COVID in the back half of the season, the Dockers have their squad back together and put on an impressive display against the Kangaroos in the qualifying finals. Meanwhile, Adelaide won the minor premiership and was the most consistently impressive team across the season. The sides met in round eight at Fremantle Oval, with the Crows winning a low-scoring thriller by nine points.

Anne Hatchard and Ebony Marinoff were unstoppable in the middle for Adelaide and ultimately the on-ball battle was the difference. The Crows also won the inside-50 count 43-17. Of course, Kiara Bowers did not play for the Dockers in that game and her presence swings the pendulum back a fair distance. The midfield battle will go a long way in deciding this one. Few teams have been able to match Adelaide, particularly in South Australia. The only question will be how the Crows start after having not played since March 13, although the Dockers are in a similar position, given the delayed qualifying final between the Lions and Magpies. For that reason, it’s hard to tip against the Crows, but Fremantle is every chance to cause an upset.

PREDICTION: Adelaide by 15 points

WE WERE THERE WHEN TAYLA KICKED THE SKY. Tayla Harris is a symbol of how our grand old game has taken everyone under its wing and can now make the top-flight playing dreams of every Aussie boy and girl come true. Four’N Twenty has been watching proudly as Tayla helps the AFLW blaze a new trail in Australia’s football journey. And we keep playing our part with pies for all.

THE ALSO-RANS BULLDOG BLOW: Star forward Isabel Huntington is consoled by teammate Brooke Lochland after her season-ending injury in round one.

MISSING IN FINALS ACTION NIC NEGREPONTIS looks at the sides that aren’t part of this year’s finals.

F

or the second successive season, we have had the same six AFLW finalists, which means the same eight teams missed out. Once again, it’s the expansion teams lagging behind, and that’s a concern given four new sides will enter next season. The bottom five sides all came into the competition after the original eight, with only North Melbourne able to push through to the finals.

WESTERN BULLDOGS u The Bulldogs finished

seventh, the closest team to the finals, and that was an impressive effort given the adversity they faced in 2022. The Dogs immediately lost their most important player – Isabel Huntington – to a torn ACL in round one, before being hit hard by COVID for multiple weeks. They did well to find their feet and win four games and draw another.

CARLTON u The Blues pulled apart

their list over summer and immediately took a step back from finals contender to rebuilding. They were given the hardest fixture in the League, losing to all six finalists, but won three of their last four and went toe-to-toe with Melbourne in the final round. Carlton should be excited about the young talent across the list, assuming it can keep Essendon and Hawthorn from its clutches.

SEASON OVER : Cora Staunton was a standout for the Giants with 18 goals, while Charlie Rowbottom (inset) looks a star of the future.

GWS GIANTS u The Giants finished ninth,

again sitting in the middle of the table and unable to crack into finals. Cora Staunton continues to defy the odds at 40, kicking 18 goals for the year. A strong win over Geelong to finish the season should give them some momentum heading into next season.

GOLD COAST SUNS u A promising year for the

Suns, but ultimately the gap between their best and worst was too great. They were thrashed by Brisbane, Carlton and Fremantle, but picked up impressive wins over Richmond and Geelong, while nearly knocking off Melbourne. Top draftee Charlie Rowbottom looks a star of the future.

RICHMOND u The Tigers would have to be disappointed with an 11th-placed finish after coming into the season with finals aspirations. They had a busy off-season, adding veteran talent to a list with lots of potential, but losing five of their first six took them out of the finals race early. Richmond was also hit hard by injuries to key players. The Tigers will be hoping to move on from 2022 as quickly as possible.

GEELONG CATS u The Cats finished 12th with

two wins, but should be excited by what they’re building. Their entry to the competition has been tough, but they were more settled this season and fought hard in a number of close losses.

ST KILDA u St Kilda’s season was

over before it started, with Georgia Patrikios sitting out and Tyanna Smith tearing her ACL. Add further midfield injuries to the mix and the Saints were fighting an uphill battle. Despite that, they were a timekeeping error away from three wins on the trot in the middle of the season.

WEST COAST EAGLES u The Eagles are yet to make

any progress in their three seasons in the AFLW system, claiming the wooden spoon in 2022. They have plenty of young talent on their list that they will need to be patient with, but a lack of readymade AFLW players is holding them back. womens.AFL
