FINALS PREVIEW
SUPER SIX BACK AGAIN The same six teams that fought out last year’s finals will feature again in 2022. NIC NEGREPONTIS
T
he 2022 AFLW finals series looks a ripper on paper, despite a COVID-19 setback during the week. In the first week, reigning premiers the Brisbane Lions will host Collingwood in a 2021 preliminary final rematch, while Fremantle travels to Arden St to take on North Melbourne. But there was uncertainty surrounding the Lions-Magpies clash with the original
scheduled date and time (Saturday at 3.10pm) to be changed after a COVID outbreak impacted the Collingwood camp. The Adelaide Crows and Melbourne will be waiting in the wings to face the victors in week two. The Crows and the Demons both finished the home and away season with a 9-1 win-loss record but Adelaide had a superior percentage (216.6 to 186.5) and claimed top spot. This group of six teams will feature in the finals for the second consecutive year, highlighting the gap between the best and the rest. FIREPOWER: Speedster Greta Bodey leads an even Lions’ forward line that could prove too potent for the Magpies.
QUALIFYING FINAL A – TBC
T
GABBA, TIME TBC
hese sides met in last year’s preliminary final at the Gabba, with the Lions ultimately winning as a stepping stone to their first flag. Brisbane completely shut down star forward Chloe Molloy and controlled the middle, ultimately proving too strong for the Magpies in hot Queensland conditions. It has been a tough year for Collingwood. The Magpies came into the season as one of the premiership contenders, but have since lost on-ball stars Brianna Davey and Brittany Bonnici to torn ACLs. A dominant win over Richmond heading into the finals should give them confidence, on top of a strong performance in a tight loss to Adelaide the previous week. womens.AFL

FINALS PREVIEW Brisbane has been an offensive juggernaut, leading the competition comfortably for total points. The Lions are 26 points clear of Melbourne and 91 ahead of Adelaide. This has come from an even spread of goalkickers too, with Greta Bodey (10), Sophie Conway (10), Jess Wardlaw (seven), Courtney Hodder, Zimmorlei Farquharson and Taylor Smith (all six) hitting the scoreboard, while Dakota Davidson is working her way back from injury. Collingwood has scored the fewest points of any of the finalists (340) and will be hoping it can restrict the Lions and force a scrappy affair. But with their midfield injuries and the difference in scoring power, it’s hard to predict a Magpies victory.
PREDICTION: Brisbane Lions by 19 points CLOSE TUSSLE: Tiah Toth and Emma Kearney battle for the ball in the Roos’ narrow win over the Dockers in round five.

QUALIFYING FINAL B – SAT, MARCH 19
ARDEN ST, 2.10PM LOCAL TIME
I
t’s been a rocky season for Fremantle in every respect and the Dockers have done well to get this far. Marooned in Victoria until the borders re-opened, they started the season with a bang before injury and suspension put a halt to star midfielder Kiara Bowers’ season and COVID protocols back home in Perth left other key personnel unavailable. As for North Melbourne, it’s hard to fully evaluate where it sits. Losses to fellow finalists Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide have shown the Roos may be a rung below the top teams, but they did take down the Dockers in round five. It may have been a 10-point win, but North kicked 3.8 and
was the stronger team across the afternoon. Jasmine Garner and Ash Riddell combined for 53 disposals and took full advantage of a Fremantle midfield missing Bowers. But the reigning AFLW best and fairest will play in this game and that will have a big impact compared with their last meeting. The issue for the Dockers will be whether they have the fight left in them after an exhausting season to make a deep finals run. For the Roos, it will be a matter of kicking a winning score. Only Collingwood averages fewer points a game of the six finalists. In all likelihood, this match-up would have been the 2020 AFLW Grand Final before the season was curtailed during finals. Now, two seasons later, both are fighting for survival in the first week of finals.
PREDICTION: Fremantle by six points

THE ALSO-RANS BULLDOG BLOW: Star forward Isabel Huntington is consoled by teammate Brooke Lochland after her season-ending injury in round one.
MISSING IN FINALS ACTION NIC NEGREPONTIS looks at the sides that won’t be part of this year’s finals.
F
or the second successive season, we have the same six AFLW finalists, which means the same eight teams missed out. Once again, it’s the expansion teams lagging behind, and that’s a concern given four new sides will enter next season. The bottom five sides all came into the competition after the original eight, with only North Melbourne able to push through to the finals.
WESTERN BULLDOGS u The Bulldogs finished
seventh, the closest team to the finals, and that was an impressive effort given the adversity they faced in 2022. The Dogs immediately lost their most important player – Isabel Huntington – to a torn ACL in round one, before being hit hard by COVID for multiple weeks. They did well to find their feet and win four games and draw another.
CARLTON u The Blues pulled apart
their list over summer and immediately took a step back from finals contender to rebuilding. They were given the hardest fixture in the League, losing to all six finalists, but won three of their last four and went toe-to-toe with Melbourne in the final round. Carlton should be excited about the young talent across the list, assuming it can keep Essendon and Hawthorn from its clutches.

SEASON OVER : Cora Staunton was a standout for the Giants with 18 goals, while Charlie Rowbottom (inset) looks a star of the future.
GWS GIANTS u The Giants finished ninth,
again sitting in the middle of the table and unable to crack into finals. Cora Staunton continues to defy the odds at 40, kicking 18 goals for the year. A strong win over Geelong to finish the season should give them some momentum heading into next season.
GOLD COAST SUNS u A promising year for the
Suns, but ultimately the gap between their best and worst was too great. They were thrashed by Brisbane, Carlton and Fremantle, but picked up impressive wins over Richmond and Geelong, while nearly knocking off Melbourne. Top draftee Charlie Rowbottom looks a star of the future.
RICHMOND u The Tigers would have to be disappointed with an 11th-placed finish after coming into the season with finals aspirations. They had a busy off-season, adding veteran talent to a list with lots of potential, but losing five of their first six took them out of the finals race early. Richmond was also hit hard by injuries to key players. The Tigers will be hoping to move on from 2022 as quickly as possible.
GEELONG CATS u The Cats finished 12th with
two wins, but should be excited by what they’re building. Their entry to the competition has been tough, but they were more settled this season and fought hard in a number of close losses.
ST KILDA u St Kilda’s season was
over before it started, with Georgia Patrikios sitting out and Tyanna Smith tearing her ACL. Add further midfield injuries to the mix and the Saints were fighting an uphill battle. Despite that, they were a timekeeping error away from three wins on the trot in the middle of the season.
WEST COAST EAGLES u The Eagles are yet to make
any progress in their three seasons in the AFLW system, claiming the wooden spoon in 2022. They have plenty of young talent on their list that they will need to be patient with, but a lack of readymade AFLW players is holding them back. womens.AFL
