GRAND FINAL

MEETING EVERY CHALLENGE

GROWING IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS

W

elcome to the 2022 NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final. We are incredibly proud of the season and can’t wait to crown the premier at Adelaide Oval. In 2022, the competition took another big step in progressing the game, and that is a credit to the whole AFLW community – from the elite to the grassroots. Season Six delivered the highest quality of women’s football we’ve seen. Skill levels were at their very best, with the Grand Final a fitting contest between the Adelaide Crows and Melbourne, our two strongest teams for the year. The leaps that women’s football keep making continues to attract more supporters, inspiring hundreds of thousands of girls and women playing football. We’re proud that more than 600,000 women and girls are now playing Australian Football across the country. Off the field, it has been fantastic to have supporters contribute to a record membership tally of 48,712. We’ve faced several challenges, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic bringing a number of disruptions. On behalf of the AFL, I want to thank clubs, players and the AFLPA, umpires, venues, governments, ticket agents, supporters and our broadcast and commercial partners for your resilience, understanding and steadfast approach. Together, we ensured all 10 rounds of Season Six were not only completed, but our best yet. Season Seven promises to be even better. I can’t wait to welcome Essendon, Port Adelaide, Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans into the League, giving us more role models, inspiring stories and moments to cheer. Good luck to both Grand Final teams.

I

t has been another fantastic NAB AFLW season and I congratulate all the players and clubs involved on an outstanding competition. I am constantly impressed at the calibre, strength and determination of the players both on and off the field through challenging conditions and disruptions. You are such strong role models for our next generation. It’s also been great to see the immediate impact the 20 NAB AFLW Rising Star nominees have had on this season. NAB congratulates the 2022 NAB AFLW Rising Star winner Mimi Hill and we wish you great success as you continue to grow and develop throughout your football career. NAB has proudly partnered with the AFLW since its inaugural season in 2017. In that time, I have enjoyed watching the game grow in participation each year and create new opportunities for women in sport. I wish both teams the best of luck in the 2022 NAB AFLW Grand Final. I look forward to seeing everyone back on the field for Season Seven of the NAB AFLW competition and welcoming four new teams to the competition.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW SURROUNDED: Demon Eden Zanker attempts to burst through a nest of Crows in the round four clash won by Adelaide.

BATTLE FOR THE AGES

A

delaide will host Melbourne in the 2022 AFLW Grand Final, capping off a rollercoaster of a season. COVID has impacted the season from start to finish, with player unavailability, game postponements and short turnarounds defining the year. It turned the competition into a battle of attrition, with the Crows and the Demons the last women standing. In last week’s preliminary finals, Melbourne was victorious in the first AFLW game played on the MCG, defeating Brisbane to book its spot in the Grand Final. Adelaide proved too strong for Fremantle, reaffirming its status as the top side and locking in another Adelaide Oval Grand Final. The Lions and Dockers fought hard across the 2022 season, but ultimately the best two teams have made it to the big one.

u It is ultimately fitting that the final game of the inaugural era of AFLW will be a clash between Erin Phillips and Daisy Pearce, the two defining figures of the women’s game. The rapid expansion of the competition will be completed next season as four new teams are admitted and the busiest trade period ever looms.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW FIREPOWER: Forward Kate Hore and midfielder Tyla Hanks (below) are among a host of Demons capable of hitting the scoreboard.

Both Adelaide and Melbourne could be heavily impacted by expansion signings, particularly the Crows with the addition of Port Adelaide. This will be Pearce’s best, and potentially last, chance to win an AFLW premiership, while Phillips and the Crows are trying to cement their legacy as a dynasty. Adelaide has been the standard-bearer across the first six years of AFLW thanks to its top-end talent, consistently strong coaching and a monopoly on South Australian talent. Meanwhile, Melbourne has been a strong side from day one and helped lay the foundations for the League, but has yet to play in a Grand Final. The Demons took a big risk letting veteran players leave two seasons ago to reset at the draft, before this year rolling the dice on Tayla Harris off a down year at Carlton in 2021 and Olivia Purcell coming off a torn ACL. All those moves paid off – they nailed their draft picks and trade acquisitions and

8

AFL RECORD

womens.AFL

complemented what was an already strong core. They have been an incredibly strong attacking side this year, with goalkickers all over the field and midfielders who can hit the scoreboard. Harris (18), Pearce (13), Kate Hore (11) and Alyssa Bannan (11) have all kicked double-digit goals, while Karen Paxman, Tyla Hanks, Shelley Scott, Maddy Gay and Eliza McNamara are also dangerous in the forward half. Adelaide is the best defensive side in the competition and the only one to concede fewer than 200 points across the season. Ash Woodland has kicked 21 goals, with Phillips and Danielle Ponter the next best on seven and six respectively. Stopping Woodland will go a long way to preventing Adelaide from kicking a winning score. However, the Crows have a significant home ground advantage and that swings it in their favour.

PREDICTION: Adelaide Crows by 11 points

INTERCEPTOR: The return of captain Chelsea Randall from injury has helped stiffen the best defensive unit in the competition.

KEY MATCH-UPS

LIBBY BIRCH v ASH WOODLAND u Woodland is the key to Adelaide’s forward line, having kicked 21 goals this season and Birch is likely to have the job of guarding the star Crow. This match-up will go a long way to determining the result.

BIG TASK: Demons defender Libby Birch, shown here sweating on Caitlin Gould, will have the job of trying to blanket Ashleigh Woodland.

EBONY MARINOFF v KAREN PAXMAN u Marinoff and Paxman are the two midfield bulls who will go head-to-head. Marinoff leads the Crows for clearances, while Paxman is capable of matching her on the inside.

TAYLA HARRIS v SARAH ALLAN u This will be Harris’ third Grand Final against Adelaide, having previously been with Brisbane and Carlton in losing sides. She will renew hostilities with Allan in what will be a crucial battle.

Tayla Harris is a symbol of how our grand old game has taken everyone under its wing and can now make the top-flight playing dreams of every Aussie boy and girl come true. BATES CROWNED AFLW’S BEST

S

tar Brisbane Lions midfielder Emily Bates capped a superb 2022 season by claiming the AFL Women’s Best and Fairest at the W Awards last Tuesday. The 26-year-old polled 21 votes to edge out Adelaide Crows midfielders Anne Hatchard (20) and Ebony Marinoff (18). As well as winning the AFLW’s highest individual honour, Bates also earned her third All-Australian selection and was voted the AFL Coaches Association Champion of the Year and AFLW Players Association’s Most Valuable Player. The Lions vice-captain averaged more than 21 disposals, 10 contested

possessions, five clearances and six tackles a game. The vote-count was a thriller, with Bates and Hatchard tied in first place with one round remaining. Hatchard took the lead with two votes, before a best-on-ground performance sealed victory for Bates. Bates became the sixth player to receive the AFLW’s highest award after Erin Phillips (2017, 2019), Emma Kearney (2018), Madison Prespakis (2020), Brianna Davey (2021) and Kiara Bowers (2021). Grand finalists Adelaide and Melbourne polled the most votes across the night with 52 and 45 respectively, followed by Fremantle with 42.

“I see this as a reflection of our whole program, and the relationships the players, coaches and staff have built across the past six years.” “I love and appreciate this group so much, and I’m very grateful for what I get to do on a daily basis.” Melbourne captain Daisy Pearce said: “We’ve always known that Mick is the coach of the year.
