SEASON 7
HOMES ARENA, SPRINGFIELD SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2022
2022 NAB AFLW GRAND FINAL BRIGHTON

Each of the expansion clubs provided historic moments, from North Sydney to Marvel Stadium and AFLW breathed new life into Alberton.

We saw the rise of the mighty Tigers and Geelong making it to the finals and, once again, the Dees, Lions and Crows were the teams to beat in Season 7.

I want to thank everyone involved in delivering Season 7 – which brought the best of women’s football to life.

Today’s final is a fitting way to cap off an incredible season. The two best teams who were separated by only 0.3 per cent at the end of the home and away season.

Two inaugural teams, two inaugural coaches. A new

chapter of AFLW history about to be written.

Can Craig Starcevich’s Lions christen their state-of-the-art, purpose-built AFLW arena with a premiership?

Or will Mick Stinear and Daisy Pearce finally get the premiership trophy that has so far eluded them?

We are in for an epic Grand Final battle. Good luck to both teams. I can’t wait for the first bounce.

On behalf of NAB, I wish both teams the best of luck in the 2022 NAB AFLW Season 7 Grand Final.

I look forward to seeing everyone back on the field for another fantastic season of NAB AFLW in 2023.

CAN DEMONS UPSTAGE QUEENS OF THE JUNGLE?

The Brisbane Lions are the powerhouse club of AFLW and Sunday’s Grand Final will mark the fourth time in seven seasons that they have made it through to the premiership decider.

And what a spectacular occasion it will be, with the clash against Melbourne marking the first game of any

description at the club’s new home base at Brighton Homes Arena, the $80 million facility at Springfield, west of Brisbane, which was only officially opened this week.

But if the Lions are one of the premier clubs in the women’s game, the Demons are not far behind. They are the pioneers of women’s footy and have

been a super-competitive outfit since the competition began and the list has been painstakingly built to reach its peak at precisely this time.

Having lost one Grand Final this year, they are desperate to atone, especially in what shapes as the farewell game for superstar skipper Daisy Pearce.

UNDER PRESSURE: Star Melbourne goalkicker Kate Hore was surrounded by Lions in Brisbane’s 15-point win in round four.

u Brisbane and Melbourne were the two best teams throughout the seventh season of AFLW and it is only fitting they will meet in the Grand Final.

Both lost just once through the 10-game home and away season – Brisbane to Richmond in round five and the Dees to the Lions in round four.

The two teams were neck and neck all season and were separated on the ladder by just 0.3 per cent. One more goal to Melbourne or one less by Brisbane and we would be anticipating a Grand Final at Marvel Stadium.

Instead we are off to Springfield, the new home for the Lions, which only opened as the club’s training and administrative base earlier this month and whose playing surface on the Michael Voss Oval was only ticked off by the AFL late last week.

The Lions only set foot on the ground for the first time last week, so while they will have the home state advantage for the premiership decider, any home ground advantage will likely be negligible.

Both clubs advanced to the Grand Final in reasonably straightforward fashion.

Brisbane avenged its earlier-season loss to Richmond with a 17-point win in the qualifying final and then returned to Metricon Stadium

last Friday for a comfortable 23-point win over Adelaide.

After beating the Crows by 21 points in their qualifying final, the Demons outlasted North Melbourne by 17 points in the preliminary final at Ikon Park.

The deciding quarter was the third term when the Kangas recorded 18 inside 50s to two but could kick only two behinds.

It was a brilliant coaching effort from Mick Stinear, but Craig Starcevich is the master coach of the AFLW and will have his team brimming with confidence. Having beaten Melbourne once already this year, the Lions are deserving favourites to do so again.

KEY MATCH-UPS

EMILY BATES v TYLA HANKS

u The gun midfielders enter the Grand Final in great touch, having had 22 and 20 touches respectively last weekend. Whoever gets on top in the engine room can propel their team to victory.

NATALIE GRIDER v KATE HORE

u Grider is one of the premier intercept defenders in the competition and a key weapon for the Lions, while perennial All-Australian forward Hore regularly hits the scoreboard and ranks highly for score assists.

TAHLIA HICKIE v LAUREN PEARCE

u Two of the best rucks in the competition. The Lions were able to ease Hickie through stages of the preliminary final to keep her fresh, while Pearce stood up superbly in the preliminary final when North started to press.

TWO OF THE BEST: The clash of star rucks Tahlia Hickie (left) and Lauren Pearce will go a long way to deciding the contest.

FIRST NATION’S WOMEN’S PATHWAY PROGRAM

The Bombers’ First Nation’s Women’s Pathway Program (FNWPP), proudly supported by Coles, is helping to pave the way for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women on and off the football field.

Continuing the club’s strong and proud affiliation with the Tiwi Islands, in the Northern Territory and in metro Melbourne’s north-west corridor, the program aims to help young Indigenous female players integrate and thrive in a professional football environment to realise their dreams of becoming AFLW players.

The multifaceted program, run across three phases, uses football as an incentive for the girls in the program with the priority being education and developing

well-rounded lives off the sporting field, while preparing for life as an elite athlete.

Phase two includes a lengthier stay in Melbourne over the duration of a school term, while phase three is a yearly stay in Melbourne to attend school and complete formal education while continuing their individual commitment to playing football.

Designed with a specific focus for the 14-to-16 age group, the pathway program was established in 2019. Freda Puruntatemeri, Rina Maureen and Jessica Stassi were the trailblazing participants of the program before it transitioned to the FNWPP in 2020.

two years, five young aspiring players have been included in the Bombers’ Daniher Squad – Remi Jean Watters, Lara Churchill, Jada Ross, Alashantee Ross and Rosie Wilson – with the hopes of signing these budding AFLW stars following the club’s inclusion in the national competition in 2022.

Coles Head of Events and Sponsorships Carmel Horvath said providing young women with enduring life skills was the driving force behind Coles’ partnership with Essendon’s program.

“It’s been eye-opening to understand Indigenous women and their culture and experience

impact the program has made on their lives and we are so grateful for the experience to partner with this meaningful program alongside the Essendon Football Club.”

FNWPP Officer Courtney Ugle said the club’s partnership with Coles would deliver opportunities to identify, develop and support young players through pathways like the NAB League to the VFLW and now AFLW.

“The First Nation’s Women’s Pathway Program aims to help support the next generation of First Nations female footballers to thrive and grow in the football environment as they pursue their goals on and off the field with the support from us,” Ugle said.

“We are so proud to partner with a national brand like Coles and both organisations remain committed to providing leadership, wellbeing, and employment opportunities through our First Nations Women’s Pathway Program as a result of this meaningful partnership.”

The FNWPP participants also receive direct mentoring and support from Coles, one of the largest private-sector employers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the country.

Footy

We’re supporting women’s footy at every level Good for

Did you know that many local women’s footy clubs have had to rely on wearing second-hand, ill-fitting men’s jerseys just so they can play? Toyota’s Good for Footy Gear Grants have stepped in to help.

The Toyota Good for Footy Program is one of the biggest sport fundraising initiatives in the country, and since 2012, we’ve helped raise over $8 million for grassroots footy clubs all over Australia.
