BLUES’ ROAD TO RESPECT

Carlton Respects is the Blues’ flagship community initiative, promoting gender equality for the prevention of violence against women.

The initiative was formed in response to the alarming statistics surrounding family and domestic violence and consists of a Schools Program, Workplace Charter and AFL/AFLW awareness-raising campaigns.

The Road to Respect schools program was established to inspire a generation of young people through quality educational

tools and resources to contribute to the development of positive future relationships.

The program was developed with support and advice from the Department of Education, La Trobe University and Our Watch and has seen more than 10,000 students be part of the program since it began.

Road to Respect has since expanded from a face-to-face program to an online digital learning platform, developed in partnership with Millipede, to enhance reach and accessibility and to ensure nationwide implementation.

Carlton CEO Brian Cook said he is proud to see the growth of the Carlton Respects Schools Program to incorporate the innovative new digital learning platform.

“Carlton Respects is a core part of what we deliver as a club and it drives home a message that we feel is of the utmost importance,” Cook said.

“The Road to Respect program is such a valuable initiative as it enables us to get our message into schools with the aim to stop violence before it has a chance to start.

“We hope to continue growing the Carlton Respects program with the support of the community, which enables us to spread the message around gender equality

for the prevention of violence against women.”

The free program is for students in Grade 5 and 6 and aligns with the Victorian RRRR curriculum. Learnings sessions include video messages from Carlton AFL and AFLW players, an activity to enhance learning, scenario-based questions and quizzes to test knowledge.

Key lessons include managing emotions, bullying and help-seeking, being a buddy, stereotypes and values and respect.

The Road to Respect launch coincides with the eighth AFL Carlton Respects Game, which will take place against the Brisbane Lions tonight at Marvel Stadium.

HAPPY CATS RE-SIGN DUO UNTIL 2025

Premiership Cat and two-time Carji Greeves medallist Mark Blicavs and exciting youngster Mitch Knevitt will remain at GMHBA Stadium, with the pair this week agreeing to contract extensions with the club.

Blicavs, 32, and Knevitt, 20, have both signed two-year contract extensions to remain in the Hoops until at least 2025.

The versatile and durable Blicavs has been one of Geelong’s best performers in 2023 and has provided great flexibility throughout his career, being used across the ground wherever the team has needed.

Before being recruited as a Category B rookie, Blicavs was identified by the Cats while attempting to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics as a steeplechaser and middle-distance runner.

Quickly transferring his attributes across to the AFL, Blicavs made his debut in round one of 2013 and has since played 234 games over 11 seasons.

His 2022 season was one of his finest and included Geelong life membership, his first All-Australian blazer and a premiership.

Drafted with Pick 25 in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft, Knevitt is looking to build on his first season at Geelong, which included two senior games in 2022 after impressive VFL form.

Knevitt has worked his way into the senior side in recent weeks and was used as the tactical sub in round six against the Swans, before collecting 15 disposals at the MCG against Essendon last Sunday.

A running midfielder with excellent speed and endurance, the local product from Grovedale won the best and fairest for the Geelong Falcons in his draft year.

Head of List Management Andrew Mackie said he was delighted the pair had re-signed with the club.

“Mark continues to be a really important player for us. He has shown a high level of consistency over his career and has worked extremely hard to become the player he is, and his high training standards see him continue to improve each season,” Mackie said.

“While Mark plays a critical on-field role, he is also a leader off it. He is a popular member of the team and has great relationships across the playing squad.

“At only 20 years old, we are excited to see what Mitch can achieve at our club.

“Mitch has a great work ethic and we look forward to seeing him continue to develop over the next two seasons.”

COLES FUEL MAGPIES’ RECLINK PROGRAM

The Collingwood Magpies Community Football program has received a much-needed boost from Coles for its 2023 campaign.

The club’s community partner Coles has committed to supply the team with fresh fruit and healthy food options to support the program’s participants, which includes individuals of disadvantaged communities.

Coles’ donation was a timely one, announced on the eve of Collingwood’s 2023 season.

Across the fixture, Coles will provide a match-day lunch to all participants along with a variety of healthy fruit snacks at each training session.

This support stems further than the side’s 13-round campaign, with participants able to seek food support post-season for the remainder of the year.

Coles Group General Manager Corporate and Indigenous Affairs Sally Fielke said Coles is delighted to provide the club’s most vulnerable athletes with nutritious food.

“Coles has been a proud partner of the Collingwood Football Club’s community foundation and programs for the past five years and we’re excited to be able to provide extra support this season to their Reclink community team,” she said.

“We know that many of the Magpies’ Reclink players are facing personal challenges, including access to healthy and nutritious food before, during and after their footy matches.

“We hope our donation will go some way to helping these players lead healthier, happier lives.”

participants made up of many multicultural and First Nations players under the guidance of coaches Shane Williams and former Collingwood AFL player Daniel Wells.

This year is the team’s second campaign under the Collingwood name. The Collingwood Magpies Reclink program became Collingwood’s eighth team after the club partnered with the side in July 2021.

Established in 2008, the program has provided more than 200 participants with an opportunity to improve their social, physical, and mental health.

The program creates opportunities for individuals faced with homelessness, mental health issues, unemployment and drug and alcohol dependence by providing participants with social connection, improved health and wellbeing pathways, and access to support services through football.

Along with Collingwood’s AFL and AFLW sides, the Reclink team will wear Collingwood’s 2023 Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey this year.

The program is supported by contributions and partnerships with Victoria Police, Headspace Collingwood, and Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS).

Wells, Collingwood’s Talent ID and Community Ambassador, thanked Coles for their generous contribution to the program.

“Coles is a key part of the Reclink program’s operation, and this donation is an example of their

continued support for the side,” Wells said.

Coles is an avid supporter of Collingwood’s community programs and teams.

Last year, the supermarket donated five sport wheelchairs to Collingwood’s wheelchair team and hundreds of Coles team members have volunteered at the Magpie Nest Café, where funds from the partnership are spent to provide food to some of Melbourne’s most vulnerable individuals.

The Collingwood Magpies Community Football team kicked off its 2023 season on April 5. Matches are held fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons across a 13-round fixture.
