COVER
Picture perfect
Photographers from as far away as Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, regional Victoria and South Australia have entered this year’s Rotary Photographic Art Show. With more than 200 entries, the quality of the photography once again has improved and all augurs well for an exceptional exhibition. Well worth a look. Last year’s winners have again entered work and all seven categories have been well supported. There has been an increase in photographers entering from the Wattle Range Council area and they are also
eligible for the Regional Photographer award in memory of Don Ferguson, former Wattle Range Mayor. The inaugural Peter Rapp Youth Incentive Award, is an exciting perpetual award recognising the talented young photographers of the region. Total prize money of $6500 has ensured the Rotary Photographic Art Show is one of significance and is recognised nationally. Building on the success of the previous three exhibitions, sponsors Infigen Energy, KimberlyClark Australia, DiGiorgio Family Wines, Wattle Range Council and local
firm Thompson Drilling have all continued to be major sponsors, and local firms Fosters Foodland, Hamilton Hateley and Associates and Atkins Technicolour, from Adelaide along with new sponsors, Lonergan and Muhovics, are also on board. With the overwhelming success of the past three years, the event is proving to be very attractive to both professional and amateur photographers. Last year, some of the amateur photographers who entered excelled and reflected the very high standard of photography that exists in the
community today - skills that are maturing and developing with each year of the competition. Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi will officially open the exhibition this Friday at 7.30pm and has commended the Rotary Club of Millicent on this exciting initiative ensuring that Millicent has a month of festivals and exhibitions through March and into April. With a large variety to see and do as many shops will still have Geltwood displays on show, Millicent is definitely worth a visit. The Millicent Gallery and Visitor Information Centre will feature exhibitions of timber, quilts and fabric art and the exciting National Oz3Quilt Exhibition is also in town. The Millicent Gallery will still be hosting the nationally acclaimed Michele Hill, William Morris inspired Quilt Exhibiton and will be open over the same period as the Rotary Photogrpahic Show. Adjacent to the Civic Centre both of these exhibitions will be a stimulating experience and well worth the journey. The 2013

Local talent on show
An exhibition of portraits, figures, animals and landscapes expressed through oil paintings and textiles by Ron
Penrose and Sandra Heenan will open at Gallery 54 in Penola on Sunday, March 24. Ron Penrose, a farmer
from Harrow on the banks of the beautiful Glenelg River, is also a passionate artist who finds inspiration in the
landscape and people of the district. Using his preferred medium of oil paint he incorporates vibrant colours and exciting textures adding life and movement to the works. “I have been inspired by many great artists. It was the style of Ben Quilty that changed my works so dramatically,” said Ron. Sandra Heenan grew up in Western Victoria, in the shadow of Mount Napier, among the stony rises and volcanic plains. Sandra now lives in Mount Gambier raising her family with

her husband Paul. Sandra (work pictured right) expresses herself through a diverse range of art forms, painting, drawing, printing, sculpture, ceramics and textiles. “My work often includes one or a combination of these mediums hence the use of my favourite title - mixed media artist,” said Sandra. Visitors are welcome to join the artists for the exhibition opening at 2pm on March 24, where Ron Penrose will be guest speaker. The exhibition concludes May 13.
Easter clean up
Glenelg Shire Council has carried out a series of street sweeping in Percy Street, Bentinck Street and Hurd Street last week. The street sweeping ensures that the Portland CBD is a clean and accessible place for Glenelg Shire residents and visitors. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said that street sweeping is routinely scheduled around the shire and with their
Easter period coming up and an influx of visitors expected, it was a good time to spruce up the town and give it a quick makeover. “A further sweep of streets in and around Portland’s CBD is scheduled in the week leading up to Easter,” the Mayor said.

The Kanawinka Geopark has a new director and one with close local ties. Geologist Ian Lewis

The Kanawinka Geopark is one of the largest volcanic provinces in the world, stretching across Victoria’s Southwest into the South East of South Australia. It includes a number of RAMSAR sites, six sites of international significance and 14 sites of national significance, recognised for their scientific, geological, archaeological, ecological and/or cultural values. Kanawinka gets its name from the geological fault line that stretches from Naracoorte in South Australia to Portland in Victoria. A Kanawinka Geotrail brochure with a map featuring more than 60 geosites has recently been developed. It explores the ancient landscape between Camperdown, Lake Corangamite and

Putting their best foot forward for charity
Tenison Woods College’s junior school students have quite literally put their best foot forward in a bid
to stamp out poverty. Monika Kolhoffer’s Year 3 class hosted an innovative fundraiser earlier this month that
not only put the shine on raising money for those in need but also put the shine on participants shoes. It was a busy lunch for the 26 students, who hosted a ‘Shoe Shine’ where for 50 cents, fellow students could get some shiny shoes with a complimentary massage thrown in. “Despite the heat we had a loyal and determined queue of customers and, as far I could tell, all left satisfied clients sporting shinier shoes,” Mrs Kolhoffer said. “The classroom was absolutely full, we had a queue out the door and down past the playground.” The class was working hard to raise money for Carita’s, Australia’s Project Compassion Appeal. Held during the six week period during
the lead up to Easter, Project Compassion raises critical support for Caritas Australia’s long term international aid and development programs as well as natural disasters and emergency responses. After a class consultation, Mrs Kolhoffer said the students had set themselves a fundraising task to raising enough money to go towards buying a bicycle for a young person to travel to school and use for work in Cambodia, as well as buying a box of materials for children to learn carpentry in Mozambique. “We’re over half way with our fundraising goal, and I’m confident with some more hard work we’ll achieve our target,” she said.
Left - Tenison Woods College students Year 3 students, Noah Sims and Zachary Nulty shine up the shoes of Mitchell Harrold and Amity Aslin, while Emily Heesakkers and Thomas Bignell receive a massage from Lilah Lamb and Milla Buckingham.

Financial boost for local community groups
Earlier this month the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes had the privilege to hand over a number of donations
thanks to service work and fundraising. Two of the recent major fundraising events have been the Blue
Lake Fun Run and the Australia Day breakfast. Thanks to more than 4000 volunteer hours accumulated just for
these two events, the club had $23,000 to hand out from its coffers. The major recipients were Noorla Yo Long ($8000) Inclusive Directions ($5000), Sports Scholarship allowance ($3000), Foodbank ($3000), ADASE $2000 and a further $2000 being set aside to fund a future mental health night. She’s Apples have been a supporter of the club,
as well as many other local community projects, for many years and it was a honour for the club to present them with a Paul Harris Fellowship award. This award is named after the founder of Rotary International and usually is only award to an individual that goes above and beyond in helping the community and it was the first time the club has presented this award to a business.

It’s all about the body clock
Julie Rennie was in Mount Gambier just last month, guiding a group of 100 people through her revolutionary Metabolic Clock program. And she’s back again this Sunday for a full day workshop. The author of The Metabolic Clock, a book that tackles weight loss and a healthy lifestyle, in an innovative and scientific way and the results speak for themselves. Julie’s association with the South East has come about through personal trainer Alison Vilani and with the assistance of Jetts Fitness, Julie has been able to deliver her message personally to South East converts, or those interested in trying her methods. While Julie encourages the use of personal trainers, she has some bad news
for people think that just sweating it out for a couple of sessions a week will achieve results. “A lot of people and their personal trainers work on mainly exercise but don’t get in and change the lifestyle patterns,” Julie said. “My program is about generating energy, creating healthy habits and realising that it’s about everything - the rest you get, what you eat and being active.” Julie’s life as an author and motivational speaker began two years ago - prior to that she was a training manager for a corporate giant. A second book is due out in May, complete with new recipes and more advice based on the same principles as The Metabolic Clock. Julie is also developing a six week online program for
people to follow. One of Julie’s key pieces of advice to newcomers to the program is to be patient. “You can’t change your lifestyle overnight - it does take time,” she said. Julie (pictured below) is the first to admit she crashed a burned the only time she tried to “diet”. She was busy running a day spa making sure others were relaxed while neglecting herself. “I didn’t have a healthy daily routine - skipping meals, drinking lots of caffeine, and drinking alcohol at night to relax,” she said. “I wasn’t organised in my pantry.” And for someone who had been competed at a national level in athletics, been part of an Australian Institute of Sport program and run up to 100 kilometres a week, Julie was now someone with no energy who couldn’t face the thought of exercise at all. “I decided that was the place to start - working out a way to get me energy levels back up,” she said. So she started to research and found what she sees as a
simple solution that she knows has worked for her and many others as well. “We all have an internal body clock and our modern lifestyles tend to unbalance that,” she said. Julie started her overhaul by going to bed earlier, one of the biggest sins we all commit in terms of our body clock, and the results stemmed from there immediately. “Everything shifted for me,” she said. “I was able to get up early and have some quality time for myself in the morning and it gave me about two more hours a day which is time to plan meals, find time to exercise and just relax.” It took only two weeks for Julie to notice a significant difference and with the importance of breakfast high on Julie’s agenda, she found heading to bed earlier saw her waking earlier and hungry - ready to enjoy a healthy, hearty breakfast rather than skip it for a take away latte on the way to work. “I had more energy during the day and slept better at night,” she said. “You burn
body fat while you sleep so it’s also a good idea to go to bed just a little bit hungry.” Cutting out chemicals and processed foods is another vital step. “It didn’t matter how many vitamins I took, they didn’t work and I didn’t feel right,” she said. “It’s not about denying yourself things, it’s about balancing things - it’s better to start slowly and stay with it than to rush in.” Call Ali V on 0425 804 933 to book your place in this Sunday’s workshop from 9.30am-4.30pm at the Commodore on the Park. Tickets are $125.

HYPNOSIS The Virtual Gastric Band
The Virtual Gastric Band is a remarkable weight loss program. We use hypnosis to condition the sub-conscious mind into believing that a band has been placed around the top of the stomach in order to create a small pouch, thus reducing the amount of food one needs in order to feel full. The Virtual Gastric Band is for people who want to lose weight, but don’t want to go through a physical operation. The Virtual Gastric Band is available at a fraction of the cost and has comparable results.
THE VIRTUAL GASTRIC BAND PROGRAM WILL BE RUN IN MOUNT GAMBIER DURING THE MONTH OF MAY 2013

Junior development in focus
Gambier Centrals Soccer Club has established its own junior soccer academy for players from the ages of four to nine on Friday nights. The Young Lions Academy is being coordinated by a panel of four well known and respected coaches - Scott and Tom Dickson, Shane Dycer and Ben Jeffrey. The academy will run each Friday night, starting this Friday from 4.45pm to 6.15pm with the aim being to foster junior players and get more youngsters playing at an earlier age. The academy builds on last season’s popular Friday night matches, which provided the
opportunity for players as young as four. The academy concept will provide a one stop shop for training and games to occur on Friday nights for 15 weeks. The Dickson family have been involved in coaching in the local competition since 1977 and have played a role in the development of many of the finest locals produced in both the women’s and men’s associations. Former Centrals senior coach Shane Dycer is keen for the Young Lions Academy to build on

New turf gets workout
The Lower South East Hockey Association unveiled its new $500,000 turf redevelopment earlier this month with Mount Gambierr Mayor officially opening the new facility. The LSEHA hosted a couple of Adelaide clubs and gave the new surface a good workout over the opening weekend.
the success the club has had at a junior level in recent seasons and acknowledges that junior development will be a priority at the club over the next decade. “The academy is very exciting and represents a line in the sand for Gambier Centrals,” Dycer said. “We want to do well and this initiative will showcase our facilities to a new playing cohort and their families.” Current senior player Ben Jeffrey will be the first port of call and, as the only playing member of the coaching staff,
will foster the senior player mentor program for each academy member. President Greg Clark and the club committee are keen to support the program and believe the academy will be a great way to get youngsters on the park at an earlier age for their development and to have some fun. All current and intending players are to be at Centrals on Bishop Road at 4.30pm for a 4.45pm start on Friday night. The Young Lions Academy is open to boys and girls are welcome and parents are encouraged to stay and watch with drinks and a barbeque available.

TENNIS History
making victory for Glencoe
Glencoe Tennis Club broke a long drought at the weekend, claiming its first A1 tennis title in 31 years. The last time the Murphies won the competition was the 1981/82 season. This season was in fact the first time the club had fielded a team in the top division since 1989. The celebrations were doubled when the club also claimed the A2 title, emerging as a new potential powerhouse
in the Mount Gambier & District Tennis Association. The A1 title was a family affair for Glencoe with sisters Ashlea and Laura Edwards, father and daughter combination of Craig and Chloe Watson and Elise and Hugh Lenehan, a husbandwife combination new to the club this season. Rain threatened to mar the association’s grand final day but all matches were played and all titles decided. Glencoe’s win

SEABL Pioneers
open season with gutsy win
A come from behind victory on the road against long time rival Ballarat has kickstarted the Pioneers 2013 SEABL campaign on a positive note. While both sides are still waiting on NBL players to join their line-ups, it was a high quality contest, that saw the Pioneers rally from 13 points down halfway through the third quarter to steal the away win 86-83. Coach Richard Hill was thrilled with the first up win, believing his side had the edge because of the familiarity of his players. “Four of the guys that were on the court down the stretch were four guys that were part of the group last season and I think that helped,” Hill said. “Ezy (Erik Burdon) was outstanding, Sutts (Matt
Sutton) was rock solid; Jan (Warbout) had just got off a plane from Cairns and hadn’t had a lot of time with the group but in the second half he fitted in nicely and Kurt (Russell) did a great job.” The addition of US import Titus Robinson also looks promising early. Recruited for his defensive capabilities, Hill said he was the stand out defensive player on the court but he also top scored with 36 points. “Titus (Robinson) got huge numbers for his first game, he was outstanding,” Hill said. “We gave him the ball in the right spots and while I don’t expect him to get 30-plus points every week, he clearly is a defensive and offensive threat.” Robinson also pulled in a game high 15 rebounds - nine of them on the offensive boards. A study
of the statistics shows the Pioneers were far superior from three point territory and the charity stripe, as well as looking after the ball a whole lot better than the Miners. The Pioneers only coughed up five turnovers compared with the Miners’ 13. Result Mount Gambier Pioneers 86 (Robinson 36; Burdon 28; Sutton 10; Warbout 8) d Ballarat Miners 83. FOOTBALL & NETBALL
North Gambier has started the 2013 Western Border season in style, claiming both the football and netball titles at the Elastoplast Cup at the weekend. For the reigning WBFL premiers it was back to back silverware after last season’s breakthrough A grade title, while for the netballers, it was a good hit out for a new look squad. North Gambier took on East Gambier in both deciders - East and North meeting in the football final courtesy of unbeaten efforts in the pool stage of the competition, while North survived an overtime scare against South Gambier in the semi finals to take on East, which had upset an undermanned, but previously undefeated, Millicent to make the title decider. FOOTBALL SCORES East Gambier 6.4(40) d South Gambier 5.2(32); Millicent 6.7(43) d West Gambier 1.3 (9); North Gambier 8.4 (52) d Casterton 1/1 (7); South Gambier 10.8 (68) d Millicent 5.2 (32); East Gambier 8.4 (52) d Casterton 5.0 (30); North Gambier 16.4 (100) d West Gambier 0.1 (1).
