York, New York
Start spreading the news - former MJ dancer and Grant High School student Matthew Cram is leaving on September 14 to continue pursuing his dancing dream. The 19 year old is New York bound after securing a merit scholarship for one of the United States’ most prestigious ballet school – the Joffrey Ballet School. The four year program starts with a nine month intensive training course
after which dancers can leave if they secure a professional position. Matthew is the first MJ dancer to secure a place in an international program and is the next step in a journey that first took him to Sydney. It was last year that Matthew, along with fellow MJ alumni Maddy Macera, took off to Sydney after securing a position in the newly established Jason Winters Contemporary Technique
course at Sydney’s famed Brent Street Studios. “That was a real eye opener, it was really hard,” Matthew said. “We were dancing from 8 till 5 which I loved. It took a while to get used to but now I really miss it and I can’t wait to get back to dancing every day.” Matthew graduated from that course, which was ballet and contemporary based, but until the Joffrey opportunity, the next chapter of his dancing career had eluded him eight months on from graduation. “I saw the scholarship on a dance website and thought I would go for it,” Matthew said. “I had refused to leave Sydney because I was so determined to make a go of my dancing.” Matthew had got down to the last round of casting for Moulin Rouge and Tokyo Disney but just where his dancing would lead next was still unclear until the scholarship discovery. A day long Sydney audition than included a ballet class, a contemporary audition and an interview saw Matthew secure the scholarship – he is one of five Australians heading to the Joffrey Ballet School this year. There was a month lag time between the audition and that all
important call to say he had been accepted. “Mum was with me when I got the call and she was just crying, she was so happy,” Matthew said. “My parents have been so supportive of me in pursuing this dream and it hasn’t been cheap and it hasn’t been easy but they have backed me the whole way to stick at it.” Now they will be farewelling their son, who is leaving for what is his first trip overseas. “So many people have said to me how brave I am to be doing this on my own

but I haven’t even really thought about it,” Matthew said. “All I care about is this is the next big step in my career.” Working on his ballet is also a smart move – it is the technique basis for all dance and there will still be time for some contemporary work as well as classical in his time at Joffrey. When Matthew left for his Brent Street course in Sydney, he wanted to join a contemporary dance company and that is still the long term goal, although he is also seriously considering
spending some time on the cruise ship circuit to build up his finances. “You dance every day, you get to see the world and everyone I’ve talked to said it’s just a great lifestyle with good pay,” he said. But for now, Matthew, who spent seven years at Mount Gambier’s MJ Dance Studio, is setting himself for his New York adventure and working hard for at least nine months to continue his dance development. Courtesy of his work in national competitions
throughout his MJ career, Matt does know one fellow dancer and a teacher that currently live in New York, so while he will know no one at Joffrey, he will have a couple of familiar faces in his new home city. “Everyone will be in the same boat though and if it’s like the course in Sydney, we all just clicked and got along and looked after each other,” he said. collaboration earns windfall
The success of Tenison Woods College’s ongoing partnership with Generations in Jazz Incorporated is being heard across Australia, with the school being announced last Tuesday as the winner of the newly introduced NAB Schools First Open Theme Impact Award. The school received $60,000 to be used to enhance music education through their partnership with Generations in Jazz Incorporated. They have also been shortlisted as one of only eight theme winners nationwide to now vye for the title of the 2013 NAB Schools First National Award, to be announced at a gala dinner in November. Principal David Mezinec said it was an incredible recognition for the success of the partnership, which was originally formed in
2007 in a bid to expand the music opportunities throughout the school and region. He said the genuine focus on music development had seen a significant increase in interest and participation at the college. The award-winning partnership was also behind the Generations in Jazz Academy launched in 2009, designed to bridge the gap between secondary and tertiary music education. Backed by patron, world renowned jazz musician, James Morrison, the academy is the only specialised program of its kind on offer in Australia catering for aspiring musicians under the mentoring of respected musician, Graeme Lyall AM. The program, only on offer for 17 students from across the nation, provides a unique gateway to enable
the students to continue with tertiary music studies or launch their career as a professional musician. Mr Mezinec said the NAB award recognised the contributions of those who had worked tirelessly over the years to support music education in the school and local community. “The college’s significant partnership with Generations in Jazz Incorporated has meant that we have been able to offer a course of international standard, attracting students from across Australia,” he said. “Since its inception, those students fortunate to be part of the GIJ Academy have benefited not only from expert tuition in jazz musicianship and preparation for the music industry, but have also involved themselves in the school and local community in a variety of significant ways, and acted
as outstanding leaders for younger students across the region.” Mr Mezinec said the prize money would go a long way to complementing the resources at Tenison Woods College, ensuring students enjoyed the most contemporary music education and performance opportunities. He said in partnership with Generations in Jazz Incorporated, the college planned to support music education in other schools to ensure the region continued to be a leader in music development and jazz music education. “The prize money will complement the Generations in Jazz Academy Eastern States Tour, and I am also excited about the possibilities of a Generations in Jazz Academy Tour through central Australia, which will offer rural and remote communities the opportunity of experiencing high calibre music experiences and Jazz music education,” Mr Mezinec said. Above (top right) - Generations in Jazz Academy Director, Graeme Lyall; Tenison Woods College Head of Music, Beth Creedy; GIJ Academy student Christopher Ryan; and Tenison Woods College Principal David Mezinec celebrate the school’s success in winning NAB Schools First ‘Open Theme Impact Award. project in the spotlight
Glenelg Shire Council has resolved to seek funding for a Strategic Assessment Plan for the proposed Casterton Kelpie Interpretive Centre. The Strategic Assessment Plan will be used to translate the concept for the centre into a project plan that will take into account business and community needs. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said that it was an important step forward in the planning for the proposed centre. “There are many potential community benefits of the Casterton Kelpie Interpretive Centre, including the opportunity to create a new focal point for the town’s heritage, which may also become a tourist attraction for the region,” Cr Stephens said. “At the August council meeting, Council resolved to submit a funding application to Regional Development Victoria from the ‘Putting

Local First Program. “The application will seek a $30,000 grant to fund the Casterton Kelpie Interpretive Centre Strategic Assessment Plan. “The aim of the plan is to provide a guide for future activities and to provide Council with a firm, fair and equitable basis for decision making.” Council recently acquired land at 47 Railway Precinct, Casterton, with this land intended to be used as a location for the centre. With this acquisition council is now able to start planning for the development of the centre. If successful in its funding application, council has also proposed to contribute $10,000 to the creation of the Casterton Kelpie Interpretive Centre Strategic Assessment Plan.

the narrowest of margins, a mere half a point. In the solo championships Evelyn Wood finished first in the under 19 novice event and second in the junior tenor trombone section. James Owen walked away victorious in the junior snare drum section with an exceptionally high score. Months of hard work by players and conductor Jarrod Harrison was rewarded with the band receiving the highest score for the test piece, two points ahead of the other bands. The Mount Gambier City Band were a point or two short in the hymn and stage march with eventual winners Salisbury City Band receiving the necessary points in these sections. Unfortunately organisers were forced to cancel the Parade of Bands event due to the wet condition of the oval venue, thus robbing Mount Gambier City Band Drum Major Carol Megaw of the chance to take the band to marching victory in her 25th year at the helm. However, Carol was on hand to stir the band into action for the Stage Contest. The Mount Gambier City band will now look towards the local Lion’s Club Blue Lake Festival on November 16 and the Limestone Coast Tattoo on November 30.

SPORT Titans
toppled at final hurdle
The Tenison Woods College Titans Open Boys Basketball Team has come within 11 points of winning the 2013 SSSSA State Basketball Championships. Held in Adelaide earlier this month, the boys finished runners up in the State in the Open Boys Basketball Pool A Division after going down in the grand final to metropolitan basketball powerhouse Concordia College. Titans Academy head coach Matthew Paton said it was an impressive display by the young Titans, with the team being one of the youngest at the tournament. “The success of our boys ensures the future certainly looks bright for the Titans basketball program in the years to come,” coach Paton said. The team comprised of Kane de Wit, Jed Telfer, Matthew Parslow, Todd Lockwood, Aidan Schulz, Stephen Sochacki, Brad Rathjen, Sam Stafford, Cameron

Millard, Luke Black and Brad Close. The boys secured their berth at the championships after comfortably winning through the regional round in Mount Gambier in the first week of term, defeating Mount Gambier, Naracoorte, Millicent and Bordertown High Schools. Facing off against the larger schools from the Adelaide metropolitan area, the Titans were the only undefeated team in the tournament during the preliminary rounds of the championship, defeating Christian Brothers College 38-34, Unley High 48-42 and
Adelaide High 38-36. Coach Paton said after securing the top seeding for the semi-finals, the Titans had to play Adelaide High (4th seed) yet again, this time dispatching the Adelaide boys 57-41 in a dominant display from start to finish. This meant the team had earned a spot in the grand final against four-time defending champions Concordia College. “Unfortunately though, the rigour of five games in one day proved too much for the boys and they fell just short of ultimate success, losing to
Concordia 45-56,” he said. “The Titans fought gallantly all day and the runner-up finish created school history as the first time that Tenison Woods College had made a championship game in Open Boys Basketball Pool A.” Above - Back row: Kane de Wit, Jed Telfer, Matthew Parslow, Todd Lockwood, Aidan Schulz, and Stephen Sochacki. at the theatre September 11 Chet Baker Show – Like Someone in Love HAMILTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, HAMILTON In this thrilling, dark theatrical performance, David Goldthorpe explores both the haunting, unforgettable music that made Baker famous and the visceral, selfdestruction that made him infamous. He takes the audience on a gripping ride through the highs and lows of Baker’s life, interspersing the dialogue with expertly arranged Baker classics under the musical direction of Tim Solly and performed with a full live band. The theatre show is followed by a jazz concert featuring Goldthorpe’s refreshing take on Baker’s unique style of both singing and playing. A complete and satisfying night out for lovers of theatre and jazz alike.

Nicole Smith has been a part of the Portland retail landscape for 25 years. The Shoe Cove, at 85 Percy Street, Portland, was unveiled this week. It is a family business focussed on providing
footwear solutions for every member of your family. Nicole’s daughters Teisha and Shae will work side by side with their mother with Portland’s newest shoe outlet set to make customer service its number one priority. “Customer service has always been so important to me,” Nicole said. “Being friendly, being helpful and just making sure the customer has the best possible experience and ends up with exactly what they needed.” Nicole is looking to achieve that perfect balance between comfort and style and quality and affordability and that is what The Shoe Cove is all about. The power of many If you’d like to have your investments looked after by a group of experts, who can adapt to meet changing market conditions, it’s time to discover multimanager funds. Like many investors, you may already be aware of the benefits of diversifying your investments across different types of assets, such as shares, property, cash and fixed interest. But have you thought about diversifying across different types of fund managers? Single vs multi-manager In a single fund, an individual fund manager controls the portfolio and makes all the investment decisions. Fund managers come in all shapes and sizes. The way they invest your money can vary widely, from passive to active and growth to value. • Passive or active – passive managers aim to match a benchmark such as the All Ordinaries Index, while active managers aim to outperform such benchmarks. An active manager’s performance is driven by their skills and styles, such as in the way they approach stock selection and market timing. • Growth or value – value managers look for bargain stocks they believe are undervalued by the market, while growth managers look for strong performers in industries with what they see as good prospects. The reality is different fund managers tend to perform better in different conditions. In some conditions, a value fund manager might deliver the best returns, while at other times a growth fund manager might be a better option. The problem is, it’s difficult to predict the market and you can’t easily chop and change between funds. However good their track record, fund managers are still likely to experience periods of short-term fluctuation in performance. Also, previous results may not be an accurate indication of future performance. Last year’s stellar performer can end up with this year’s wooden spoon. If you’re investing for the long term, you may be able to ride this out, but it can make for a bumpy ride. And your options are limited if your fund manager isn’t doing well. You can sit tight and hope your returns improve… or you can cut your losses and move to another fund, realising your losses along the way. Spreading the risk – best of the best One solution is a multi-manager fund. A multi-manager fund brings together a number of individual fund managers, with different styles and different philosophies, in one portfolio. The idea is to reduce the level of volatility and create more long-term value. So what do multi-manager funds offer? • Diversification – Spreading your investment across different types of assets, using different fund managers with different investment styles, can help to reduce your risk. • Specialisation – While single manager funds use one manager to invest in different types of assets, multi-manager funds can use specialist fund managers who have a
deep understanding of their particular asset class to make these investment decisions. Some of these specialists may not be available to individual investors. • Simplicity – it’s a complex world out there. Many investors simply don’t have the time to pick their way through the daily chatter of economic and financial news to work out the best individual fund manager for their needs. A multimanager fund chooses the funds and makes the decisions, making the choice for you. • Expertise – You can benefit from an expert hand at the helm, directing your portfolio through choppy investment waters and closely monitoring fund performance. The overall fund manager will choose funds, monitor performance and change individual fund managers if necessary. A space to watch With nearly $122 billion invested in multimanager funds1, Australia is a significant market for this type of fund management. Australians may be realising the benefits of tapping into the expertise of different fund managers and spreading their risk. If you’re interested in exploring the multimanager concept as a solution for your investment needs, please call us today. Pisces You really need to stop always being the one who compromises in your close relationships, both pofessionally and personally, as it is starting to see you build up resentment towards those that never give an inch to you. Stop trying to please everyone all the time - it’s exhausting and impossible. Aries You might be dying to get a personal secret off your chest but please, please, don’t choose a work colleague as your confidante. The last thing you need is for your personal issues to be the talk of the office. Find someone completely removed from the situation or just keep a diary and write your thoughts down. Taurus Be on high alert for some less than genuine friends that could try and talk you into doing something selfish that you will regret. If you’ve committed to something important just stick to your guns. Gemini Brace yourself for one of those work situations where a colleague leaves you with a difficult project and no real guidelines. Just take a breath and remember winging things and getting the job done are your forte. Cancer There is nothing wrong with getting in touch with your spiritual side but beware someone who will try and get quite close to you and use their charms to do so. Listen to the message but beware the intentions. Leo Things are going to get a little sticky on the personal front and someone sticks their nose into your business and discovers a secret you’ve been harbouring. Things will get a little embarrassing but honesty will still be the best policy so stick to the truth and things will blow over.
Virgo This is a week where a family member will really need your support for their latest hobby or recreational pursuit. It might not seem important to you but your approval means the world to them so play along and give them that boost they’re looking for. Libra Your health should be in focus this week and a nagging issue, whether it’s an ache or pain or just a feeling of being tired or not 100 percent. Stop ignoring the signs and get checked out. You’d be surprised what peace of mind can do and catching things early is always the best tactic rather than letting it become something potentially serious. Scorpio You’re surrounded by friends that have had some really good fortune of late. Try and celebrate their success rather than sit in envy of their achievements or luck. Keep one eye on an opportunity for your own good luck story - it could be just around the corner. Sagittarius You could be presented with an opportunity to earn some more money this week. This could be just the opportunity you’ve been looking for so put some of this newfound income aside and start that savings account you keep talking about. Capricorn It’s time to shake things up in your life - whether it be an exotic holiday, embarking on a professional development opportunity or just giving your lifestyle an overhaul. Aquarius Now is the time to take stock of your possessions and make sure you know where all those sentimental and valuable items in your life are. It’s also not a time to splurge but rather stay true to your more frugal nature.

and reading in the spotlight
The Millicent Public Library recently celebrated 40 years of Children’s Book Week. The event was celebrated nationally and more than 550 students and community members attended the daily sessions held at the Millicent Library. Mayor Gandolfi encouraged everyone to visit the library and join in the longest running Children’s Festival in Australia sharing in the celebrations, activities and storytelling. “It has proven to be a great opportunity to promote our library, collections and children’s literature” he said. “We advocate greater understanding of the value of reading to children and parents’ effect on early childhood cognitive, language, emotional and social development through our library programs. “Reading can take you

anywhere and it is about engaging the community with literature for children.” Through its ‘Read Across the Universe’ themed program the library aimed to promote the value, importance and transformational nature of reading; influence the reading habits of our communities; raise the profile of books in the lives of children and young adults and champion the cause of our reading in the younger members of the community. Mayor Gandolfi said it was important to note that only 10 minutes a day needs to be spent reading to your child and this will build a good foundation for literacy and family. Library staff joined students, teachers and parents from schools, kindergartens and child care centres in the Wattle Range Council
area to review the book of the year winners, read stories, discuss books and read and undertake activities that support the stories, thus highlighting the importance of reading and literacy. At the Millicent Library, staff build partnerships and relationships across many sectors including education, community, culture and technology to extend the reach of literacy improvement opportunities. “Our library is wellpositioned to support family literacy, and have an established expertise in this area supported by close connections with other learning, social and health agencies working within our communities,” Mayor Gandolfi said. “Early and family literacy programs are widely offered by this library in the form of regular story time sessions, baby bounce and rhyme for babies, and sessions for parents all enhanced by Children’s Book week celebrations.” The Children’s Book Week celebrations ran for a fortnight with library staff going out into the community and schools for further storytelling and activity building on the literacy and community programs.
local story Foreshore plans in the spotlight Glenelg Shire Council will use community feedback received from the Portland LIVE project to develop three projects aimed at responding to the needs of residents. The public submissions received show significant community support for the upgrade of the skate park in the current location, upgrade of the foreshore playground, and a need for overall connectivity of the foreshore pathways. Rather than continuing with the Portland LIVE foreshore all-ages activity space, council will instead develop a Youth Activities Space concept plan, a Foreshore Master Plan, and a Play Space strategy. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Karen Stephens, said that council had carefully considered all of the submissions received as part of the Portland LIVE consultation, and that the new strategies reflect the community’s needs. “A wide variety of opinions and ideas were expressed by the community during the Portland LIVE draft concept design process,” Cr Stephens said. “Submissions received for the Portland LIVE draft concept design indicated that significant further consultation would be required if the Bentinck Street lawn area project was to continue. “What community feedback has told us is that there is a need for a Youth Activities Space, which includes a skate park, at the current skate park location. “In accordance with the Portland Bay Coastal Infrastructure Plan Council will also create a Foreshore Master Plan for the foreshore area that addresses the connectivity issues between the different areas. “In addition, a Play Space Strategy for the Shire will also be developed, that addresses the need for the upgrade of the foreshore playground.” A concept plan for the Youth Activities Space will be developed at no additional cost to council as it is in the current scope of the Portland LIVE consultants existing contract.
LOCAL Bringing Passionate and driven Idan Ben-Barak comes to Mount Gambier, courtesy of Inspiring Australia, for an enthralling and scintillating lecture about the tiny world of microbes that subsequently rule our lives. For one night only at the Mount Gambier Library, Idan will be flying in to talk about the fascinating world of microbes, which involves everything from bacteria to viruses. Born in Israel in 1974, Idan lives in Melbourne with his wife and son and holds a Bachelor of Medical Science and a Masters in Microbiology, both of which he received from the Hadassah School of Medicine at the University of Jerusalem. Idan is also currently working towards a PhD in the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney. Idan began writing when he sent a few quirky pieces to New Scientist, a weekly international science magazine and website that covers developments in science and technology. From there he received a scholarship from the Writing Center of Scholars and Researches at the University of Melbourne, which paved the works for his new book, Small
germs to life
Wonders. Small Wonders is all about the microscopic kingdom of germs, bugs, viruses and microbes which we surprisingly rely on a great deal to live our daily lives. For example, did you know that you are currently carrying at least a kilo of bacteria around on, and in, you at the very moment? And that if it wasn’t for these little hitchhikers we’d all get very sick, very quickly? And along with these fascinating details comes the beautifully written context that can only be described as having the wit of Bill Bryson and the spirit of Natalia Angier. Idan bring this tiny world of microbes to life with refreshing analogies and metaphors, such as cells that ‘pop like bubbles’ and bacteria that ‘dream of rain’. The book takes you on an a journey where you learn the teamwork required to rot human teeth, the origins of diseases, what

September Quilt really goes on inside of a cow’s stomach and the ways in which microbes benefit from human life. This amazing book is only the beginning, with Idan already planning another to be released in the next year or so. It is for his passion and his wit that Idan was chosen by Inspiring Australia to come to Mount Gambier and talk about his work in the hope that he might inspire people to take up science as a career. While he is here he will be talking about a load of interesting macrobiotic topics such as the amazing lives and workings of genes, proteins, bacteria, viruses and all the endless ways that shape life on earth.
Idan has quite a unique way of talking, a way that draws in his audience; and with his light use of knowledge you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand what he’s talking about.

I read this week of a study being carried out by Melbourne researchers looking to find whether Tasmanian Devils are becoming less intelligent. Straight away the first question that needs to be asked is, “What were you thinking would be the consequence of living in Tasmania? Surely you didn’t think it was going to make them any smarter, did you?” Once I’ve stopped making jokes about Tasmania and the fact they buy shoes, socks and hats in pairs, I start asking more serious questions. Should we
Duh... by Robbie Tansel
really be worried about the intelligence of Tasmanian Devils when there are people who are supposedly intelligent scientists and think it’s a good idea to study the intelligence of Tasmanian Devils? Let’s be honest. There are dozens of humans whose intelligence is quite obviously diminishing rapidly that it would be worth studying. Ok, we’ll start with the politicians because it’s just so obvious. I’ve decided that Kevin Rudd actually believed that if he became Prime Minister again leading into the election, Labor would remain in power. Either he shook a magic eight ball or he is seriously deluded. You could see it as extreme optimism but I’m firmly of the opinion that optimism is one of the worst and most dangerous
forms of stupidity. Being a little bit pessimistic (read realistic here) is actually a sign of high intelligence. Yes I am saying that optimistic people are stupid. Then I look at the special form of stupidity that Tony Abbott seems to be suffering from. I’m pretty sure that again he thinks he’s got it all worked out. He dreamed of becoming Prime Minister and in his brain I’m pretty sure that is the end point. In his mind he’s got it completely worked out up until the seventh of September. That night he will get to say the victory speech that he’s had saved up for three years and stick his tongue out at Jules and KRudd. What makes him stupid is that he’s forgotten that starting September 8 he actually has to come up with some ideas on how to solve the problems. Sure, he can buy some Indonesian fishing boat and hope that stops “illegal” boat people rocking up in Australia, he can slash and burn funding to this that and the other and he can pay thousands and thousands of dollars to mothers to have babies, but after that week and a half he’s gonna have to come up with some ideas. Plus we all know that by now Labor are just trying to bugger up everything they can so the Coalition spend
the first couple of years trying to fix the mess. Let’s go back to the Essendon Football Club for further evidence of stupid. I find it really interesting each time the club invites the players’ parents down to try and explain and reassure them that everything is okay. Did they invite the parents down to the club before they started turning their sons into human pin cushions? That would have been a better idea. And anyway, aren’t these professional football players adults who are responsible for their own behaviour and health? Is it really necessary to bring their mummies in? Stop treating them like little babies. Damn. If you need any further evidence that stupidity is out of control in the human population, just watch Big Brother. You can’t watch more than three minutes without asking whether people actually behave like this in the real world. Surely these people are just acting this way because they’re on television and want to win money or something? If not I’m prepared to start supporting euthanasia. Anyway, at least the election will be done soon and that will have to take the level of stupidity down a little. Fight the stupidity and email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

FEATURE ADVERTORIAL I MEET OUR LOCAL EXPERTS
Circle of Events “My focus is to provide hand-crafted wedding ceremonies to elevate the spirit, connect people with each other and to their community. I am profoundly interested in transforming our highest ideals into everyday living. This aspiration, together with the many ethical and spiritual questions that arise from it, drives my personal life and also my professional work as a celebrant.” Josephine Kerestes Your Celebrancy Specialist “Born in the old Mount Gambier hospital and growing up in the area, I am delighted to return to the district making my celebrant services available across the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria - a privilege to be Lauren and Stu Harvey’s celebrant. It was a funeral that led me to celebrancy work when friends asked me to present the eulogy at their father’s funeral in the small and charming building that was the Kalangadoo Methodist Church. And then, six months later, I was again asked if I would do the same - this time at the funeral of their mother. Both of these people who died I had known all my life, were the parents of my best friend, and respected members of the small but close community in which we had all lived. How could I say no? I wanted to support my friends in their grief, but at the same time I was very anxious and nervous about not making a bubbling mess of the speeches. Anyway, once getting past the huge fear of having to speak in public at an emotionally heightened occasion, and the possibility of not doing justice to
the lives of these people whom I loved, what I found, surprisingly, was that I actually felt energised by the experience. Shortly afterwards, the Monash University, Melbourne, Post Grad Diploma in Civil Ceremonies was recommended to me and that is where I qualified before starting up my business, Circle of Events. That training, together with my experience, enables me to have the ability to conceptualise the depth and emotion behind the wedding and funeral ceremony through symbol and metaphor. This makes for a simpler but more powerful event that speaks to all - regardless of educational, religious or ethnic background. Those who have no connection with organised religion still desire meaningful and appropriate ceremonies. I understand this. For me, it is a joy to listen to peoples’ stories and then to assist them in the gathering up of the special

moments of their life, helping to find the right words marking these events with ritual which help us to understand and give meaning to changes in our life. Respecting individual belief of all people I have a high regard for diversity in religious and cultural practices, honouring all paths towards living a happy and healthy life. My approach is holistic and personal. I understand the significance of, and am committed to, creating an uplifting and memorable ceremony of substance to elevate the spirit, connect people with each other and to their community. My work as a celebrant, along with my personal spiritual study and practice, and spending invaluable time with friends and my beloved family I live life as fully as I am able and reflect deeply upon it.” Josephine
ADVERTORIAL Bowling The Portland RSL Memorial Bowling Club was awarded the title of Business of the Year at Glenelg Shire Council’s 2013 Inclusive Business Awards presentation on August 23.The awards recognise and promote the businesses, organisations and individuals delivering best practice in access and inclusion for people with a disability. Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said that the Portland RSL Bowling Club had made an exceptional effort to provide access and inclusion opportunities for all community members. “The Portland RSL Bowling Club promotes and uses best practice within the workplace when it comes to access and inclusion for people of all abilities,” Cr Stephens said. “The club has purchased modified versions of technology, materials, and tools, and uses these to help people with a disability to access and utilise their services.” The bowling club also took home the Community Participation award, which

was one of a number of other categories to be honoured on the night, including Physical Access, Inclusive Customer Service, Micro Business, Employee of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Employer of the Year. Portland RSL Memorial Bowling Club manager Tammy Jones said the community participation award had been a genuine collaborative effort between club members and the community. The club works alongside Kyeema Support Services with people with disabilities, as well as three of the region’s schools. “Our members were only too happy to volunteer and make the day out enjoyable for the Kyeema clients and the school children,” Tammy said. “Having these community programs was an initiative of our members and the other groups, who wanted something different as part of their programs.” Some of the club’s improvements to make life easier for disabled participants was the construction of new decking around a year ago, complete with a wheelchair ramp. The resurfacing of the carpark
also saw four disabled carparks installed on flat, wheelchair friendly ground and the club’s rinks have ramps for easy access for all players as well. “You don’t make these kind of improvements to your facility to win awards but it is nice to know that the club’s efforts have been appreciated by members and the community alike,” Tammy said. Seawinds Nursery (Kyeema Support Services Inc) was announced as Employer of the Year, while Heywood Bakery was the winner of the Physical Access Award, and PT@HOME took out the Micro Business category. The Community Participation award went to Portland RSL Memorial Bowling Club, with Heywood Men’s Shed commended, and Loaves and Fishes took out the Inclusive Customer Service award, with Talk

Renowned ballet dancer Tibor Horvath was adjudicating the Mount Gambier Dance Eisteddfod a couple of years ago and couldn’t help but notice the standard of dancers from MJ Dance Studio. “I realised I was giving a number of prizes to these amazing dancers and they were all from Maria (Slape’s) dance studio,” Tibor said. “I could see her studio had talented dancers, they were very strong contemporary and lyrical performers and I could see the potential for some of them to pursue ballet. Tibor ran an open class after that adjudication stint for all studios in the district and then returned to Sydney to establish his own school - Tibor Ballet Studio, which is all about developing young dancers and preparing them for a professional career. Fast forward three years and Tibor arrived on MJ Dance Studio’s doorstep ready to put the dancers through their paces, identifying talent and assisting the studio’s Mount Gambier based teachers in how to further develop and improve all their ballet students. “I had seen a lot of potential and all they needed was guidance in basic technique,” Tibor
said. Katarina Gajic, Cooper Terry and Steph Nugent have all caught the ballet icon’s eye and have been invited to audition for a place in his school on September 15. He also identified a handful of younger dancers that he believes have potential but just need more training. The opportunity to audition for Tibor’s program is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the young MJ dancers. The school has been running five years and has already produced professional
dancers that are furthering their study or working in Europe in junior companies. Tibor brings in guest teachers from such esteemed companies as the Paris Opera and for the MJ dancers to be able to work with a former dancer and teacher of such calibre is amazing. cont. opp. page Above - (from left) Jaclyn Proud, Lucie Milstead and Sienna Rossi work on their classical ballet technique.

“Getting the technique right and always working on it is so important,” Tibor said. “It is the basis for every dance style.” Tibor also pulls no
punches when working with students. He doesn’t sugar coat the work and dedication required to become a ballet dancer and preaches there is no
substitute for hard work. “You must have a real passion for ballet,” he said. “You need the right body shape but that can be worked on, you need good technique but technique can be taught, but you cannot teach passion and that’s the most important thing.” Tibor looks to bring the balance of inspiring students but also keeping the strict structure that ballet demands. “There are about 20 things a ballet dancer has to be thinking about with every move,” he said. “You have to be soft and strong.” Tibor spent his sessions not just refining technique but observing just who had the work ethic to make it in the cut throat world of ballet. “You can see which students are willing to work hard and which ones are listening and not switching off because you are talking to someone else,” he said. The newly formed relationship between MJ Dance Studio and Tibor is set to continue with the teacher committing to regular visits, around two or three times a year. “I am 150,000 percent happy to help,” he said. “I have travelled all over Australia for the past five years and you just get to see so much talent out
there.” Tibor was four or five years old when he knew he wanted to be a dancer. His older brother is a pianist and Tibor would dance away to his brother’s practice sessions. His father was a famous jazz musician in Hungary so it seems it was inevitable Tibor would end up in the arts. By age eight, he knew he wanted to dance professionally and started his training when the family moved to Sweden. He got into a Royal Swedish Ballet School from an audition of 200 where only four dancers were selected and the rest, as they say, is history, Tibor danced Fritz in The Nutcracker when he was nine, won a scholarship to the Hamburg Ballet School when he was 15 and went on to a successful career in the Finnish National Ballet Company, where he became a soloist at the tender age of only 20. Tibor worked extensively as a soloist and principal around the world before settling in Australia in 2007 and setting up his Sydney school. Twenty-one years on the Millicent Library continues to play a pivotal role in developing and enabling lifelong learning opportunities for all ages and all members of the community. Actively providing programs and partnering with many providers both educational and recreational, ensuring access for all, from the active children’s library, teen and computing spaces through to the vast local history collection and art gallery all co-located in the Civic Centre. Mayor Peter Gandolfi said council had set out to provide facilities and programs that were comparable to that of a metropolitan library and the community had embraced the concept of the library as a community hub with meeting rooms, suites of computers, training, programs supporting literacy, diverse collections and resources all highly used. “The library is recognised for developing collections to support community projects, interests and promotions” he said. Opened in September 1992 the new library and A class gallery complex has been an outstanding success, keeping abreast of new technologies and library trends and is today as relevant as 21 years ago. The library is recognised for innovation and over this period

developed a South Eastern Library Network (awarded a LGA award for innovation), the early adoption of the State One Card Library system was built on this innovation. The development of the outstanding Towers Local History Collection representative of local and regional history ensures the community and researchers have access to more than 31,000 digitised items, photographs, resources, oral histories and personal collections and that our history is collected and maintained. The art gallery, extended in 2004, provides cultural and arts opportunities, access to a broad range of arts, exhibitions and experiences. Two permanent collections have been developed - the unique Barbara Wallace Collection and the Sharon Davson Collection. The Wattle Range Photographic Exhibition is one of the key upcoming events in the Millicent Art Gallery opening on September 20th with photographs encapsulating the ethos of Wattle Range and the diversity. Entries close September 10. The Millicent Library, an e-smart pilot library, addresses the digital divide and builds digital literacy enabling our communities to experience the social and economic benefits of the new communication technologies whilst making the online library experience more inclusive and safer. Mayor Gandolfi said many sectors of the community increasingly relied on the library to use technology and the training opportunities as they don’t have access to it in their own homes and projects such as this are vital for building community capital and development. The library continues to have a strong core of Friends of the Library and volunteer support from the early days of the library when they moved and restocked the new library and fundraised through to work in the local history collection, gallery and the general collection. They are mounting a display to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the new library and gallery.

Influential Penola ruckman Dylan Coxon has been adjudged the best and fairest player in the KowreeNaracoorte-Tatiara Football League for 2013 - the same week his new club, the Eagles, booked a place in the 2013 season decider. Coxon has been a huge factor in the Eagles’ resurgence in a season where Penola’s aggressive off season recruiting has paid handsome dividends. Coxon polled 24 votes to be announced the Mail Medal winner and recipient of the Virgo Medal last Wednesday and then on Saturday the Eagles advanced to the grand final with a 45 point victory over reigning premiers Bordertown. Lucindale ruckman and 2008 winner Mark Snowball (Lucindale), classy Kybybolite’s Billy Laurie and Keith’s Jonathon Wilson shared runnersup honours with 20 votes each. And Coxon wasn’t the Eagles only winner with Lachlan Jones taking home the Scott McFarlane Memorial Trophy (rising star award) and Adam Merrett being honoured for his 108 minor round goals as the league’s leading goal kicker. Merrett has added five to that in the qualifying final and a further four in the weekend’s second semi final. Not surprisingly, Penola had six players named in the Naracoorte Herald’s KNTFL team of the year - the 40th time
the newspaper has announced the competition’s elite. Coxon, Merrett and Jones were joined by Ben McIntyre and Matt Merrett, with Matt Willson named on the interchange bench. Four life memberships were handed out on the night, with Kaniva Leeor’s Jeffrey Meyer (player); Mark Miels (umpire); Neville Vickery (league) and Chris Toet (umpire) all honoured. Port MacDonnell utility Will MacDonald (pictured above left - photo courtesy of Karen Cawthorne) has etched his name in history, winning his third Mail Medal as the best and fairest player in the Mid South East Football League. His prior triumphs came in 2010 and 2011. He is the fourth player to achieve the trifecta but would no doubt have given up the individual honour in lieu of his team advancing to the 2013 season decider. The reigning champs let at every change in the tense battle with Hatherleigh but were outclassed in the final term and must now tackle Glencoe this Saturday at Robe to continue their premiership defence. MacDonald won the award by six
votes from Clint Gallio (Mt Burr) - the talented Mossie taking home the most valuable player award as well. The other top honour of the night went to Kalangadoo playing coach Leah Ousey (pictured above right - photo courtesy of Andrew Crouch), who was named netball’s best performer - taking out the title 37 years after her mother Pauline Mulraney snared the same accolade. Hatherleigh’s Keston Green was runner-up for the third time - the star goaler also claiming the 2008 and 2011 top honour. Green in the end got the last laugh when her Eagles defeated the Magpies to advance straight into the 2013 grand final.
SEABL Spectres
earn rematch with Pioneers as club re-signs coach
It’s been a big fortnight for Richard Hill. The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers head coach led his side to a second semi final victory on August 23 - the same week he put pen to paper to re-sign with the club for a further 12 months. After plotting the downfall of Nunawading in the second semi final, it is the Spectres again that stand between the Pioneers and championship glory. “They (Nunawading and Hobart) are good teams so we certainly had no preference as to who we play,” Hill said. ““Obviously they (the Spectres) will be able to make some adjustments which will make it a little difficult for us but we’ve been training really well.” Hill admitted after the end to the minor round that saw the Pioneers play around
four matches in 10 days, as well as the commitments of the NBL signed players, and then the home semi final, to have now had two weeks off the court in match conditions has been an unusual feeling. The full squad will not be together until Thursday night training this week when Brad Hill and Ben Allen return from Sydney Kings duties and Kurt Russell returns from a week on the road for work. Erik Burdon is expected back from Perth on Wednesday but there is little hope the sharpshooter will overcome his groin strain in time to take the court in the South Conference grand final. Tom Daly has also been in the West, trying to become the fourth Pioneer from the 2013 playing roster to secure an NBL deal. Jan Warbout also spent
early last week training with the 36ers. The available players trained on Father’s Day as the championship week started in earnest. “It was the best training we’ve had, it was really nice to train knowing who we’re going to play,” Hill said. “Our trainings are always really competitive and we’re in that habit so I don’t think not having played for a fortnight will really affect us, especially when so many of the boys have been training really hard in an NBL environment.” Hill has put in place a group that understands that each player has a role to play. It is about consistency and evenness of contribution rather than relying on go-to players. “We have five guys who are averaging 12-plus points and then Sutts (Matt Sutton) that is almost averaging 10 points a game,” Hill said. The Pioneers are gunning for South Conference glory 10 years since the club won its inaugural championships - also on the Icehouse pine - but it hasn’t been a topic of conversation with the 2013 group. “We honestly haven’t spoken about it,” Hill said. “But the reunion weekend was a nice little spur for our guys to see the pleasure and self esteem that it generates to be a part of a championship team, that certainly helped us realise just how much it would be nice to have an experience like that.” Whether
the Pioneers snare the silverware or not, Hill believed the club is well advanced on where he thought it would be when he took over the reins last season. “When you first go to a club you always talk about play-offs but I realised pretty quickly that we were a way off that,” Hill said. That being said, the on court results and the overall club program is now about 12 months ahead of where the experienced basketball observer thought they would be and he was keen to stay in the role. Unfinished business and succession planning are the two defining factors in Hill wanting to stay with the Mount Gambier club. “I want to get the program in the shape that gets you in play-offs for the next two or three years at least,” Hill said. “I did not want to get here and maybe win a championship and then leave and have the club back to being a bust for two or three years.” One of the top priorities for the returning coach in 2014 is injecting some local talent in the group. “It’s been a long, long time since a born and bred Mount Gambier player had a significant input into the performance and that’s my goal,” Hill said. “I have been working with two or three really talented young players over the past year and a bit.” Hill also believed nurturing local talent took the pressure off the club to recruit all its players from
away, Hill also wants to continue to build the relationship between the club and Basketball Mount Gambier - a relationship that has significantly improved during Hill’s tenure. But for now, all attention is on Friday night and the Spectres in front of a sold out Icehouse crowd.

MSEFL & MSENA Double Not too many people at Saturday’s Mid South East netball at Mt Burr would remember the last
delight for Eagles in Mid South East action
time Kalangadoo lost a second semi final but it happened and the Magpies now find themselves in
unfamiliar territory - a preliminary final. Accurate shooting, precise delivery and relentless all court defensive pressure got the Eagles over the line, with association best and fairest runner-up Keston Green leading the way. The other key for the Eagles was the way the younger players in the side really stepped up, with the rebounding of defensive duo Kaitlyn Smith and Georgina Brooks a key reason the Eagles turned a first half deficit into a final change lead. In the end Hatherleigh won by seven goals and the reigning premiers are left to literally lick their wounds. Playing
with their preferred starting seven for only the fourth time this season, three of the players entered the clash having missed the final round of the home and away season, with Jayde Peacock in her first serious hit out since seriously injuring her shoulder more than a month ago. Peacock has had no luck in 2013 though and seriously injured her hand in the third quarter on Saturday and while in doubt for Saturday’s preliminary final at Robe, coach Leah Ousey has not given up hope her star mid courter will recover in time. Peacock continued on Saturday
after sustaining the hand issue but is now severely hampered by the injury. While the Eagles were accurate, the Magpies suffered from inaccuracy and once Smith and Brooks started to dominate the boards, Hatherleigh was able to gain the ascendancy. Green and the Eagles mid court fed the ball to tall shooter Tara Fabris well and the young shooter rewarded her team mates with accurate finishing. Not long after Hatherleigh booked a spot in the football grand final as well when the Eagles came from behind to defeat the reigning premiers by 22 points. The second semi final was an arm wrestle with the Demons leading by two goals at the first change, five points at the half and a solitary point at the final change. Over the past two seasons, it has been Port MacDonnell’s modus operandi to blow teams out of the water with stunning final quarters but this time it was the Eagles, who came into

revs into action this weekend The Millicent Sand Buggy Club have been pulling out all the stops in the lead up to this weekend’s Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro, with the I’s dotted and the T’s crossed, all is on schedule for a successful fourth and final round for the ARB Australian Off Road Racing Series along with the concluding round of the South Australian Off Road Racing Series. The event, which is renowned for its dust free racing, is taking shape with track works well underway, including some reshaping of a few jumps and some slight alterations to the quarry prologue track. The battle at the front of the 65 strong field will be fierce with ARB Australian Off Road Racing Series leader Glenn Owen up against last year’s event winner Matt Hanson and looking to hold off Danny Brown as they vie for the right to wear the inaugural series crown. The 71km
track winds its way through the Tantanoola Pine Forest on the outskirts of Millicent and through the Teagle Quarry arena, whose natural amphitheater showcases the awesome off road racing machines to the large spectating crowd. The drainage work undertaken in previous years has paid dividends with the quarry area ready and waiting for competition to get underway on Saturday. Full catering will be available trackside and for those unable to get to the event, all the action will be streamed via the LIVE Track PA broadcast on offroadracing.com.au. Follow the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro facebook page for latest information on the event.
