EMERGENCY SERVICES MATCH RETURNS

Hawthorn will again honour the work of Victoria’s emergency workers with the return of its annual Emergency Services Match against Melbourne today.

Now in its fourth year, the game will see the two sides battle it out for four important points while also highlighting their support for the state’s emergency services personnel pre-game.

At half-time, fans can show their support to all the emergency services workers and volunteers as they take to the field for a lap of honour.

The organisations recognised as part of this special match include:

u A selection of the country’s most talented draft-age footballers will represent the Australian under-18 team for the second time this year, with the 2023 AFL Academy Boys to take on Carlton’s VFL team atoday.

The AFL Academy Boys program features a selection of the most talented male footballers across the country. All players were aged 17 as of January 1, 2023, and will be eligible in the 2023 Draft.

Players participate in high performance and personal development programs, with the AFL Academy’s purpose to best prepare players for transition from talent pathways into elite football programs.

The 30-player squad includes a host of the most exciting prospects in this year’s draft pool, with all states and territories represented.

The AFL Academy Boys represented Australia last month during Gather Round, going down by 13 points to Port Adelaide’s SANFL team.

Among those who impressed were Harley Reid (22 touches, seven clearances, one goal), Colby McKercher (15 disposals, four tackles), Jake Rogers (12 disposals, one goal), Ryley Sanders (20 disposals, six tackles), Nick Watson (18 disposals, four rebound-50s) and Darcy Wilson (19 disposals, three inside-50s).

PIES MAKE MEMORIES IN THE TOP END

Ahead of the 2023 season, members of Collingwood’s AFL program spent pre-season in the Northern Territory.

The rigour of high performance, fitness and football craft were set aside for the first week of March to allow players and staff to immerse themselves in a community camp across the Barkly region.

Jack Ginnivan, international rookie Bassirou Faye and VFL player Josh Eyre were joined by Collingwood staff in Alice Springs. The program was led by Cultural Development Manager Leon Davis, and Head of Academies/ VFL assistant coach Harmit Singh.

For some, the red dirt, humid air, and lack of mobile phone reception was reminiscent of previous Northern Territory trips, but for others this was their first experience of Australia’s red centre.

Eyre, whose family is from the Wemba-Wemba region, joined the Magies through the NGA pathway.

“It was my first time in the NT and the experience I had was a very special one,” he said.

“I am so grateful for my time and have memories that I will cherish forever. This trip enabled us to impart footy knowledge on to the kids while also inspiring them to stay in school and highlight the importance of education.”

From Tennant Creek to Elliott, to the remote community of Ali Curung, it was clear for everyone in these communities that football is life.

While players were available for autographs and photo opportunities, attention at each school visit remained firmly on the football.

“The purpose of the visit was to re-establish relationships within the Barkly region and to help use football as a vehicle to promote broader social outcomes with this community,” Singh said.

“At the same time, this trip was an opportunity to identify talented kids that we can filter through to the Michael Long Cup, which will be held later on in the year, and continue to support our existing talent pathway programs that we have at the club.

“The kids showed some very exciting raw talent, especially at primary school level, particularly in Elliott.

“It was also pleasing to see increased levels of participation from girls in the region.

“Due to the pandemic, we haven’t been able to be as visible in these communities for a few years so maintaining this connection is a focus for our club moving forward.”

Collingwood is dedicated to supporting these communities with a key focus on connecting and learning from community members, while reinforcing positive messaging to children around school attendance, engagement in sports and healthy eating.

The club will return to the Barkly region for the Michael Long Cup later in the year.
