“
Pistachio Oil La Tourangelle Pistachio Oil contains low levels of saturated fat, high levels of monounsaturated fatty acid, and has a decent amount of linoleic fatty acid. This balance makes for a very healthy oil that may help to protect your heart and fight against bad cholesterol.
Macadamia nut oil brand ‘This Is Good’ was founded by lifelong fitness enthusiasts and personal trainers Hannah Zussman and Nicos Sliney. They work closely with their macadamia nut supplier, Green Farm Nuts Co. in South Africa to ensure that each bottle has the perfect ratio of essential fatty acids, high in monounsaturated fats and low in saturated fats. This is Good boasts a 15% saturated fat content and 76% monounsaturated fat (per 100ml), compared to coconut oil which contains 83% saturated fat and 6% monounsaturated fat (per 100ml). Monounsaturated fat is a fat group rarely spoken of and that consumers know little about. This Is Good like to refer to monounsaturated fat as “the good fat that helps reduce the fat cells in the body caused by the consumption of saturated fats”. This Is Good Macadamia Nut Oil is available to purchase in premium green glass 500ml bottles from the This Is Good online shop (RRP £15.99). www.thisisgoodoil.com

TOP TIPS FOR A HEALTHY SUMMER Lack of energy is a huge problem of the modern age, according to Nutritionist Angelique Panagos. ‘Processed foods become a go-to, which then make you feel even worse, and it’s easy to then get into a bad cycle. Here’s her top tips on getting to a deliciously nutrientrich place – without loads of time and effort, and just in time for summer! 1. Go with the Season! Go seasonal! Right now, all these vegetables are in to season – broad beans, sugar snap peas corgettes etc. Use them to make vibrant, warm salads that make you feel fantastic. Peaches will be coming in soon as well, and they are incredible served warm with a chicken salad. And not forgetting Jerusalem artichokes and asparagus! 2. Eliminate processed foods! Eliminate packaged processed foods from your diet. Not just obvious things like ready meals, but stuff like pre-packaged sandwiches they are full of preservatives, any mayo they use will have heaps of chemicals and the veg and salad will have arrived ready chopped.’ 3. Avoid the juicing craze. You’ll feel great by putting good, nourishing things into your body, not depleting it. One veg juice a day is great, but fruit juices have a higher proportion of sugars. 4. Replace Pasta! Replace pasta dishes with grainy salads with roasted vegtables, for example. They’ll fill you up, de-bloat your tummy and have you feeling all summer ready. 5. Plant based meals! Aim for two plant based meals and one with animal protein – chicken, salmon or eggs – a day. Combined with grains and veg, they’ll keep your blood sugar levels steady, and your mood level. Mackerel and other oily fish should come into play a few times a week to help you with that warm weather glow, and don’t forget how important it is for your skin and your energy levels to stay super hydrated. @apnutrition www.angeliquepanagos.com

Need some inspiration? We’ve found the perfect book... Seaweed: The Secret Key to Vibrant Health By Anne Brunner RRP: £9.99 Seaweed is the new superfood praised by chefs including Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal. It is a perfect addition to a healthy and balanced diet and an amazing source of vitamins and nutrients. This book will help you learn how to prepare, desalinate, rehydrate and cook seaweed and includes 30 recipes for dry and fresh seaweed, fermented milks, flakes or sheets with beautiful photography throughout.
Give it a try!
Edible seaweed such as kelp, wakame and nori form the basis for many Asian dishes, including soups, salads and suchi. Their prevelance in everyday cooking has been linked to the lower incidence of some diseases in countries like Japan, and inclusion in the Western diet has therefore been thought to help confer similar preventative benefits when it comes to our health
ABOUT Brown seaweeds such as Wakame and Mekabu contain many bioactive compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids, polyphenols and polysaccharides. Some researchers suggest that algal polyphenols have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and possible anti-diabetic effects, while omega-3s have been associated with having cardio-protective effects. Professor Helen Truby, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics at Monash University in Australia https://www.futurelearn.com
Yutaka’s wakame seaweed is packed full of natural umami, making it an ideal both as a garnish for miso and other soups, and as part of a seaweed salad. Carefully dried in order to preserve its natural flavour and nutritional benefits, all you have to do to make this wakame good to eat is soak it in water. £1.69 www.japancentre.com Clearspring Green Nori Sprinkle makes an attractive topping for pizza and pasta, rice and noodles, soups and salads. Their low sugar prosecco has less than half the sugar content usually added (7g/l – 67 calories per 100ml glass) and is a more affordable version of Thomson & Scott’s core principle: if you grow beautiful, pure fruit in the vineyards and work carefully and respectfully in the winery, there is no need to add lots of sugar to your finished wine. It is also organic and vegan and the first sparkling wine to put its calorie count on the label. Beauty drip It has been claimed that a vitamin drip may be much more effective than taking oral vitamins. The key benefit to intravenous administration over using supplements or creams is that your body can only absorb from 0-10% of what is contained in pills or creams. In addition, these nutrients, vitamins and amino acids can be safely delivered in high doses because they bypass your gastrointestinal system. Switching off is often hard to do, but long-term stress can wreak health havoc, so here’s how to make sure your time away equates to time off this summer...
x a rel MISSION:
Still stressed when abroad? Vitality offers some useful advice. Taking a holiday is a great way to relax and get away from the stresses of the workplace. In fact, our own Britain’s Healthiest Workplace survey shows that almost three quarters (73%) of Britain’s workforce suffer from at least one dimension of work-related stress. Time pressure at work, inability to lead a healthy work-life balance and working over 40 hour weeks were the main causes of stress in the workplace.
over bleary eyed at 7:00am every morning to turn off your alarm. Catching up on much needed sleep is up there as one of the best remedies for combatting stress and relaxing whilst you’re off. In fact, getting in good sleeping habits when you’re away can help you to be more productive when you’re home. Our Britain’s Healthiest Workplace research showed those who slept for six hours or less a night were notably less productive than those who got seven or eight hours sleep.
Despite holidays being a remedy for this stress, many find it difficult to switch off from their everyday lives when they’re abroad, and often come back from their holidays more stressed and flustered than when they left. If you’re guilty of this, try to adhere to these top tips from Andy Magill, Vitality’s Corporate Wellness Coach to help you successfully de-stress whilst on holiday. 1) Switch off…literally. Constant connectivity to mobile devices has become one of the typical attributes of the modern day office environment, and many find themselves checking e-mails even when lying on the beach. One of the best possible ways to de-stress when on holiday is to turn off your work mobile, switch your mind off completely from what is going on back home, relax and enjoy the warm weather. 2) Lie in. One of the delights of going on holiday is the luxury of not having to turn 12
Health Magazine Summer 2016
3) Walk. A holiday presents the perfect opportunity to dodge the monotony of stuffy public transport and to shake off the lethargy of the Monday-Friday 9-5 grind. A great way to take in the sights and catch the tourist hotspots is to put on your walking shoes on and stroll around as much as possible. Not only does this small amount of physical activity do wonders for your health through reducing your stress levels and
increasing your step count, but you never know what secret spot you may stumble upon that you would have otherwise missed if you were on a bus! 4) Eat well. Many see a holiday as an opportunity to get out of the routine of eating the same old lunchtime sarnies, however it’s important that you don’t find yourself over-indulging when abroad. Rather, you should see a holiday as an opportunity to try something different that you could introduce into your diet back home. For instance, many studies cite a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, beans, legumes and fish as a sure fire way to lead a healthier, and consequently happier, life. 5) Swim. If you’re lucky enough to have a swimming pool near you at home then you’ll know the benefits that swimming has on your stress levels. If you’re in a resort or area that is near a pool or the sea then why not take the time to go for a morning swim? It’s a great way to de-stress and relax for the rest of the day. Swimming is great as water is 12 times as dense as air so it’s a far more effective way of toning your muscles than any other form of cardiovascular exercise that you can do on land. It can be very relaxing when done at a slow pace, and can help you unwind after a hectic year in the office. http://www.vitality.co.uk www.health-magazine.co.uk
Mindfulness SMILING MIND Want to destress, improve your focus, c o n n e c t better, and enjoy a sense of wellbeing? Mindfulness meditation enables you to do all of these – but if you’ve never done it before, how on earth do you start? Smiling Mind is a guide to mindfulness meditation for busy people. Practising for just five minutes a day can help to promote happiness and well-being. Based on a 2,500 year old Buddhist practice called Vipassana, this form of meditation is designed to develop the skill of paying attention to our inner and outer experiences with acceptance, patience and compassion. Rooted in the firm belief that mindfulness can take people to a more positive, happy and emotionally aware place, authors Jane Martino and James Tutton demonstrate how this can be achieved in all areas of our lives - our work, relationships, families and parenting. They explain what being mindful is and how it works, busting those myths we tell ourselves that keep us from being truly happy and free. Smiling Mind is full of ideas, advice, practical tools and inspiration to lead a life that is fulfilling, passionate and emotionally healthy which in turn means we can build thriving, happy and successful communities. http://smilingmind.com.au
ABOUT STRESS Stress has seemingly become an inseparable part of modern life. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (https://www.healthy-workplaces. eu/en/stress-and-psychosocial-risks/ facts-and-figures), stress is the second most common work-related health problem in Europe. Long office hours, massive work load, high expectations as well as balancing career with family life can be quite demanding. However, taking a little time for yourself to relax and recharge can be a rewarding investment in your mental well-being.
MINDFULNESS FOR UNRAVELLING ANXIETY Mindfulness for Unravelling Anxiety: is written by counsellor,, cognitive behavioural psychotherapist and mindfulness instructor Richard Gilpin, who is also the co-founder of the Bodhi Garden, a charitable trust. In this book, Richard offers a practical and sensitive approach to an experience commonly shared and provides a natural health alternative to conventional treatments. www.amazon.co.uk

The study <http://www.feelguide. com/2014/11/19/harvard-unveils-mristudy-proving-meditation-literallyrebuilds-the-brains-gray-matter-in-8weeks/> also revealed how meditation provides psychological and cognitive benefits, which persists throughout the day.

The Kaizen Method
Jaroslaw Gibas, author of recently published English version of book titled ‘Beat stress with Kaizen” says that coping with stress is one of the biggest failures of modern psychology. ‘Let’s be honest: all the relaxation techniques don’t work. All we can get is a short moment of break. After this moment is over, our everyday stress strikes us back and this time it is even more powerful.’ According to Gibas, it is impossible to gain an ability of coping with stress through one simple trick – but we can do it using Kaizen. Using the method of small steps we can learn how to deceive our amygdala and control our reactions to the stressful situations, making them decrease until we will be able to manage them properly. An English version of e-book ‘Beat stress with Kaizen’ is already available all over the world in Amazon. The link to the e-book is: http://amzn.to/1PIeVcm

POWERHOOP Hooping is a fun and effective way to help slim and tone your waist, and taking this concept to the next level is Innertrak’s Powerhoop, which, according to a study at Canada’s Waterloo University, may help to reduce waist size if used for fifteen minutes a day, five days a week. Due to their weight and large diameter, Powerhoops are easy to use, even for those who have never succeeded with old-fashioned lightweight hula hoops. Weighted workout hoops work by challenging the core muscles, causing them to become firmer, stronger and more protective. This process takes several days of gradually increasing the amount of hooping time, to avoid soreness. While there are certain conditions that are contraindicated for hooping, like pregnancy and taking blood thinning medication, this approach may prove an effective aid to toning and weight loss as part of an overall balanced lifestyle.

HAPPY
MEDIUM How the balanced approach of the Mediterranean diet could be the solution to a healthier diet and lifestyle
SELLING POINTS Olive Oil
Olive oil is the mainstay of the Mediterranean diet, and is a major factor behind it’s reputed health benefits. This effect is mainly owing to its high levels of ‘good’ fats which have been shown in many studies to lend well to cardiovascular health, not to mention overall wellbeing. THE PROS AND CONS ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET Dr Sally Norton (www.vavistalife.com ) offers a lowdown of this popular approach to eating.
WE LOVE GAEA Extra Virgin Olive Oil with a dash of a garlic 250ml £6.14 http://www.yolenis.com
What’s the deal? The Mediterranean diet is one of the best ways of eating out there, as proven by many scientific studies of the health benefits it provides. The principles of the Mediterranean Diet include eating lots of fruits, vegetables, cutting out processed foods and salt and limiting red meat intake. In essence, eating REAL food in sensible portions. However, don’t think that you can eat pizza and pasta to your heart’s content – we aren’t talking about that sort of Mediterranean diet!
Pulses
Pulses are a rich source of soluble fibre which can help to absorb and rid the body of toxins originating in the digestive system. The fibre and protein content also promote satiety and thereby help to keep overall calorie intakes in line with physical needs an importnat factor in weight management, which could go some way towards explaining the relatively lower incidence of overweight and obestiy in the Mediterranean when compared to the UK.
Pros Contains a good balance of carbs, whilst being low in processed foods and high in healthy fats like olive oil, as well as nuts and fish (which means great things for our omega 3 levels). The Mediterranean Diet can be cheap and easy to keep up as it is full of basic, ‘real food’ ingredients. Cons The only minor downside to the Mediterranean Diet is that it generally means you need to cook meals yourself – eating out, or buying ready meals can be trickier as they will generally include high salt, fats and processed food. However, cooking for the Mediterranean Diet is quite straightforward, and most restaurants should provide some healthier options that adhere to the principles of the Mediterranean Diet.
WE LOVE Agrifarm” small beans 500gr £5.83 http://www.yolenis.com
Nuts
Nuts are a source of high quality protein, which acts as building blocks for the body’s repair and biochemical processes. Protein also helps with appetite regulation, and the good fats found in certain nuts help to maintain the body’s metabolism and ability to effectively ‘burn’ the energy in food. WE LOVE Greek raw pistachio Nuts n Nuts 230g £5.22 http://www.yolenis.com 16

#NEWSFLASH
THE SCALES LIE!
Ex Gladiator star James Crossley explains why a slim frame can sometimes hide a multitude of lifestyle sins...
THE SKINNY FAT ISSUE by Ex-Gladiator James Crossley What is skinny fat? A person who is ‘skinny fat’ is not technically overweight, but underneath the clothes it’s a different story, as the body has a high fat percentage (often visceral) and a low muscular mass. This is classic with people that are obsessed with their weight on scales rather than their actual body composition. `This can be caused by; 1. Too much cardio 2. Restricted calories 3. Zero weight training How does it affect our bodies? Skinny fat people often look tired, haggard, pale are low on energy and have bad sleep. They can have high inflammation, low good cholesterol, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure. They can also carry excess fat deposits around vital organs. Do you believe skinny fatness to be more dangerous than normal fatness? Often skinny fat people are losing ‘weight’ because they are losing lean muscle mass rather than body fat. The muscle is breaking down and the body is storing fat. Skinny fat people can have a high storage of visceral fat. Visceral fat is thought to be more metabolically dangerous than the more typical subcutaneous fat, as it can increase insulin resistance and inflammation. People with high visceral fat are at high risk of heart-related issues and other health problems. This said, being obese is also an unhealthy state to be in and you can be at risk of heart disease and diabetes. They are both dangerous places to be. How can you change your body from skinny fat to healthy fat? To change your body from skinny fat there are some simple steps you can take. 1. Throw away the scales, scale watches will always have trouble changing their body composition. Remember you can be heavier but look slimmer and be healthier! 2. Look at proper nutrition eating at regular intervals ,don’t be afraid of good SMART fats and keep the body in an anabolic not catabolic state by eating healthy balanced meals at regular intervals. 3. Start weight training , if you add a small amount of lean muscle your body will look slimmer, healthier and you can still drop body fat. 4. Watch the cardio, it has its place but if you’re doing endless running and spinning classes your cortisol will be high which is a big NO for a healthy change in body composition. James Crossley has created a Personal Training App, PTin1, and specialises in MUSCLE GAIN and FAT LOSS. www.chelseafitness.co.uk

Shady LADY Discover the perks of shunning the sun this summer
DID YOU KNOW? HOW YOU APPLY SUN CREAM MATTERS: Do it first thing, do it indoors and apply enough. Regardless of the brand chosen, any application in direct sunlight (IE when you’re already on the sun lounger) increases evaporation before it’s had a chance to bond with the skin, reducing its power to protect. Apply liberally to all exposed, or potentially exposed, parts of the body. The official guidelines given by Colipa (Association of European Cosmetic Industry) are 2mg/cm2 – this approximately corresponds to one teaspoon worth for the face.As a rule of thumb, use a teaspoon of sunscreen for each arm, leg, front, back and face (including neck and ears).
SUN PROTECTION – AN ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW GUIDE “As a Doctor for the last 45 years and also as a patient myself who’s had skin cancer three times, I see the front line consequences of our lack of awareness and accurate understanding of the real and long term effects of sun damage. It can be confusing to understand how to truly protect yourself and your family. My guide will help to dispel myths and give you the information you need to make the right decisions” Dr. Chris Steele MBE THE FACTS · Skin cancer is on the rise, and is the most common form of cancer in the UK and sun exposure is the main cause · At least 100,000 new cases are now diagnosed each year, and the disease kills over 2,500 people each year in the UK - that’s seven people every day.
SOME BODY PARTS ARE MORE VULNERABLE THAN OTHERS: The most common site for men to develop a malignant melanoma is on the chest or back. For women it’s more likely on the legs. Lips are often forgotten and with no natural shade like the lower lip, the upper lip area in particular shows ageing from sun damage quicker.
· Particularly worrying is the growth being witnessed in the younger population. More than two young adults (aged 15-34) are diagnosed with malignant melanoma every day in the UK, and it’s the second most common cancer in this age group. Research carried out by the Teenage Cancer Trust in 2015 of young people between 13-24* found that over a third (38%) don’t use sun protection in the UK because they don’t believe the sun here is strong enough to damage their skin. Also the TCT found that close to a fifth (18%) of young people admit to deliberately burning in order to ‘kick start a tan’. Worryingly, 45% of young people polled admitted to not using sun cream on holiday because they simply ‘forgot’ to apply it.
SHADE ISN’T THAT SIMPLE: Over 90% of UV can penetrate light cloud cover, and this remains a common mistake and reason for sunburn – both in the UK and abroad. Shade given by trees and parasols only gives protection from around 70% of UV rays. Protection – applied indoors at the beginning of the day – covers all potential sun scenarios. Out of the shade, remember a simple shadow rule: The shorter your own shadow, the higher the sun and the greater the risk. Take a long lunch break in the shade and try to avoid sunbathing until after 3pm.
· Damage can start early in babies and children. We know it’s important to protect the kids in the sun, but doing that properly is the key to preventing the damage that causes issues in the future. According to Cancer Research a history of burning as a child or teenager increases the risk of skin cancer later in life.
HIGH PROTECTION ISN’T A LICENCE TO BAKE: Using high sun protection factors can encourage holidaymakers to increase their time in the sun, ironically risking over exposure and thus burning anyway. The level of protection used should focus on skin type and time recommended in the sun with it, take a look here: http://ultrasun.co.uk/sun-account.php?lang=en.You’ll still get a tan with a high protection sun cream – it’ll be slower with less risk and guess what? – it’ll last longer!
· There are two different categories of skin cancer – melanoma (Malignant melanoma) and non-melanoma (Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) & Squamous Cell Carcinoma). Melanoma starts in skin cells called melanocytes and usually affects moles. Non-melanoma cancers (which are the most common) start in other types of skin cells. Of the three different types of Skin Cancer two can be treated fairly easily but don’t underestimate these because when they appear on the face scarring or changes to your facial features can be hard to live with.
SEA, SAND & SNOW: WATCH THE REFLECTION: Now we’re jetting off to an increasingly larger list of exotic locations understanding destination specific sun risks is important as reflection of the sun’s rays greatly increases the power of radiation. Snow – up to 80% increase, Sand – up to 15% increase and sea– up to 25% increase Ultrasun products are available from QVC, M&S, John Lewis, World Duty Free and other stores nationwide. http://ultrasun.co.uk/?lang=en 20

· The key risk factors for melanoma include excessive exposure to UV from sunlight or sunbeds, pale skin colour and a high number of moles, and a family or personal history of the disease www.ultrasun.co.uk www.health-magazine.co.uk

Dr Teixeira, Consultant Dermatologist at London Dermatology Clinic, gives her views on sun protection for children Ultraviolet radiation from the sun produces mutations in our DNA. Much of this change occurs before age 16, and can potentially result in skin tumours appearing later in life. It is, therefore, extremely important to start applying sunscreen on our children’s skin as soon as possible. Even during winter, or when the sky is overcast. If the sky is not black, this is because ultraviolet radiation is crossing the clouds and reaching our babies’ skin. Use a sunscreen on all exposed skin every morning of the year, if you are in the city, or, if the day is very hot and sunny, re-apply at mid-day and mid-afternoon. Choose your favourite brand, as long as they have high SPF factor and good UVA protection. Also, it is important to cover with straw hat and clothing.

DOES IT PAY TO GO VEGGIE? Eating a vegetarian or vegan diet can offer many health benefits. Simon Bandy, General Manager of Vegan Society approved supplements brand, Veganicity, offers some benefits and top tips to make the most of a vegan diet: Health benefits: Cutting out meat and dairy may seem daunting but the extra consumption of fruit and vegetables will increase vitamin and mineral intake including magnesium, fibre and vitamins B and C. A vegan diet is often naturally low in cholesterol and saturated fats helping to keep your heart healthy. A study conducted by the University of Oxford found that the risk of hospitalisation or death from heart disease is 32% lower in vegetarians than people who eat meat and fish¹.
RAWLIGION is a fast-casual restaurant in central London which is inspired by the innovative and forward-thinking raw food trends of America’s East Coast, with a menu using genuinely raw ingredients wherever possible. This includes an abundance of local, seasonal and organically grown fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, sprouts, seeds, sea vegetables and cold-pressed oils. www.rawligion.co.uk @rawligion
‘There was a time, not that long ago, when avocados and melons were thought of as exotic luxuries’
Expand your fruit and vegetable horizons: There was a time, not that long ago, when avocados and melons were thought of as exotic luxuries. Nowadays, they are as common as tomatoes and apples in the supermarkets. If you think vegetables and fruit are boring try something a little different – my favourite suggestions are Romanesco (a cauliflower variant with fractal shaped flower heads and rich in vitamin K), Mangosteen (a citrusy, tangy fruit prized by Queen Victoria), Tiger Nuts (which can be used to make a good milk substitute for vegans) and Cherimoya (which tastes like a banana and pineapple cross) – all delicious!
Vital Detox will provide individually tailored retreats to make sure that you reach whatever health or happiness goal you bring with you 3 RAW MEALS INCLUDED
Help to balance your hormones: A vegetarian or vegan diet is naturally high in plant-based foods with many of these vegetables and fruits being rich in phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogen compounds in plants mimic the behaviour of oestrogen and can therefore help to balance hormones throughout the month and when menopausal symptoms begin. Vegan sources of phytoestrogens include soy, apples and beetroot. www.vegancity.com

Water shame! Despite regularly hearing of the importance of staying hydrated, many of us are falling short in the waterdrinking stakes. Here’s how to turn it around this summer...
Ways with water
CANO WATER are a revolutionary water brand that is sold exclusively in stylish aluminium cans – tackling the health & environmental issues caused by plastic water bottles. There is ever-growing research that plastic bottles have a negative impact on women’s health (one of the most commonly cited culprit is excess BPA found in the water) and 80% of plastic water bottles end up in the world’s oceans. CanO Water’s striking range of sparkling and still cans can be found in Whole Foods Market and Selfridges stores, making it easy for health-conscious Londoners to swap their plastic water bottles for CanO Water. www.canowater.com

Hunger or thirst? The body’s signals are much the same, so it’s no wonder so many of us are forgetting to fill up... According to Head Nutritionist, Shona Wilkinson, at NutriCentre, “thirst can sometimes be mistaken for hunger. We feel like we’re craving something and interpret this as hunger when actually all we need is a glass or two of water! “Water is also needed in order for our cells to make use of the nutrients in the food that we eat; and lack of nutrient availability causes our body to crave more food. This is another reason to make sure you’re drinking water throughout the day and not just when this craving strikes. “Drinking water between meals also generally makes us feel fuller and can help to manage our appetite. It’s important, however, not to drink lots of water immediately before, during or after a meal: this dilutes the digestive juices and can have a negative impact on our digestion.” 24

IN PRAISE OF...
Mediterranean eating By Chrissy Hayes
Summer is now with us and the living is easy. We are all spending much more time out of doors: walking, taking part in sports and of course eating. Eating al fresco is one of the biggest joys for me during the warm summer months. Whether in a pub garden or on my own decking. And it is a perfect time to change our diets from winter stews to summer salad. In the Mediterranean countries they do eat differently from us with more vegetables and fruit at every mealtime. Instead of deep fried fish and chips they might have freshly grilled fish with green salad and a little balsamic vinegar. The people in the area around the Mediterranean are famous for having longer and healthier lives than most other people in the developed world. Can we borrow some of their ideas over here? The good news is that is has never been easier to do so than right now. I popped in to my local supermarket to see what was on offer. We are lucky to have local fruits (yum, strawberries are here at last) as well as mangos, kiwi, melon and so many others from far flung corners of the world. What with all the colours, textures and smells it was difficult to choose. The vegetable selection can be from overseas too, but we do grow a lot of our own produce and now is the time to buy it when it is in season and therefore both cheap and tasty.

My trolley soon looked like a market stall and adding some fresh fish and chicken I headed for the checkout. Price-wise all was well. The shopping had cost far less than I thought, what with all the unnecessary items I had missed out. (Crisps, chocolate bars, cakes and the like are snack items not food and are also expensive.) I was most interested in how quickly I could put a meal together once home. Although hungry and tired I had everything ready in no time. Watermelon to start. Then green salad with chopped tomato and yellow pepper, some crusty bread, a dish of sliced meat and cheese. Finally some strawberries. It looked like a rainbow was on my garden table. Sitting in the warm sunshine I really did feel I was in the south of France. Bon appĂŠtit!
