LIFESTYLE LETTER

Home is Where the Heart is! Home. So much is contained in that little four letter word. Home grounds us. It is our base. Our launch pad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value home holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder once said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” Now that I have children who have left home for college, I have learned the importance of returning home. Home truly is more about the people than the place. The house often feels vast and empty when they are gone, but so full of love and warmth when they come home. Our home is filled with special memories of family and friends: the photos on the walls, the knick knacks on the mantle telling the stories of the places we’ve been together and experiences we have shared over the years. And now we have a new flag in the yard representing our daughter’s new home away from home — all the way across the country in North Carolina. But, no matter where one may end up, home is always where the heart is. As we thought about home, we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, and, most importantly, the people. We were honored to spend time with the incredibly kind and funny Jenn and Mike Todryk. We hope you enjoy a glimpse into their beautiful home. If you haven’t visited Armor Coffee, join us in making it your home away from home — our editor practically lives there! We at Allen City Lifestyle feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise our community. We hope this issue’s glimpse into their lives and work brings people in our community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you — in your city, neighborhood and, most of all, your home. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home. Happy March!

Passion Turned Profession Tips from LeAnn Holt of Organized + Tidy ARTICLE BY LEANN HOLT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY WALES

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved the idea of being organized and tidy, with every toy and trinket having its own “home.” My Barbies were tucked in each and every night, my floor was free from the tripping hazards of Legos and Polly Pockets, and I was nestled into bed with nary a worry of mess or clutter. As I got older, I decluttered the homes of my closest friends and family, leaving them ecstatic and wanting more. In April 2021, I launched Organized + Tidy, a Collin County-based woman-owned business. Now, I get paid to pursue my passion of organizing and decluttering!

18

EXP E RT H E LP | HOM E SE RVI CE S

As long as I can remember, I’ve been intrigued by the television show "Hoarders," as well as the stories behind the individuals, leading me to want to help those who struggle with hoarding as much as I am able. During the first six months of opening Organized + Tidy, I reached out to several potential hoarder clients but only received a call back from one. At the client's request, we started small. As excited as I was when I completed her pantry job, it was apparent that she wasn’t ready to purge. This was the end of that experience, but it did teach me a very valuable lesson. I now understood who my ideal clientele would be – those who are ready to let go.

Instead of having a “drop-zone” when the family comes home from a long day at school or work, make sure everyone understands that each item has a “home.”

Aside from commercial and residential organizing, Organized + Tidy also manages decluttering for seniors and can help with packing, unpacking and setup, and various forms of staging. We also recently launched a new service called Organizing Maintenance Program (OMP). Clients who enlist us for OMP may schedule a maintenance visit every three or six months. We also love helping clients who are neurodivergent or have another diagnosis such as ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety, or Alzheimer’s that makes staying organized a challenge. There are a number of tried and true methods to help you manage your belongings. Having a set place for your daily go-to items has been proven to 1) eliminate stress, in turn decreasing depression symptoms, 2) allow you to physically see what products you currently have so you’re not running to the store for more, and 3) know at all times where your medications, snacks, and important paperwork are so you’re not scrambling for items in a time of desperation and frustration. Over the past two years, I’ve developed several tips and tricks that have proven invaluable to my clients. Consider giving one a try and, once you’ve made it part of your routine, incorporate another:

1. NO MORE “DROP ZONES” Instead of having a “drop-zone” when the family comes home from a long day at school or work, make sure everyone

20

EXP E RT H E LP | HOM E SE RVI CE S

understands that each item has a “home” (i.e., shoes = closet, backpack = on a hook by the back door, lunchbox items = either trash, refrigerator, or dishwasher). This helps you to better manage your time and energy, get to bed at a decent hour, and have less stress in the morning.

2. ELIMINATE HANGERS When you remove an item of clothing from its hanger, remove the hanger from the rod as well. You can either move it to the laundry room or place it in a designated spot in the closet. This helps maintain an organized and well-managed closet system, and also helps you keep track of your hangers!

3. DON’T BREAK THE BANK BUYING BINS If you have a junk or utensil drawer that needs a little help, forgo expensive organizational systems in favor of inexpensive alternatives available at dollar stores or inexpensive online retailers. Small spaces like these are much easier to maintain with just four or five organizing containers, and there’s no need to spend a ton of money to improve your quality of life. For more information regarding Organized + Tidy’s services and pricing, please visit www.organizedandtidy.com, call or text us at (972) 345-9879, or send an email to info@organizedandtidy.com. At Home with Jenn Todryk Happiness is Home

ARTICLE BY KATELYN REED PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL WEBB

What makes a house a home? Is it a kitchen island with room for the whole family? A sun-dappled living room with treehouse views? An affable dog named Gary who’s eager to greet every guest? For Jenn Todryk, star of HGTV’s “No Demo Reno,” the answer is simple: “Happiness. Happy memories – that’s what makes you want to go home at the end of the day.” Jenn, better known as @theramblingredhead on Instagram, and her husband, Mike, have built a life and home where such memories flourish. The couple and their home exude warmth and welcome. Gary does too. And he’s ready for his close up, thank you. When she’s not transforming homes on HGTV, she and Mike are busy with their kids and the day-to-day of running one of Allen’s most treasured local hangs, Armor Coffee.

22

M UST SE E | HOM E + D ES I GN

They’re poised to open more locations and will add Armor Brewery to the mix later this year. They also host a popular podcast. At the insistence of a friend, “You, Me & Mike” was created. The podcast, which explores topics including relationships and parenting, was something for the couple to do together. “Because we need more to do together!” jokes Jenn. When it comes to design, Jenn’s is transcendent. Her hope when guests visit is they find her home clean and put together, but “still cozy and very comfortable.” Without a doubt, Jenn has accomplished just that. Each room is beautifully appointed and artfully curated, but, rather than shrinking from the threat of fingerprints, invites visitors to peruse, explore, and make themselves at home.

She aptly describes her personal design style as falling into “the organic modern realm – woods, stone, concrete – but with a softness to it.” The Todryk home is the embodiment of this aesthetic. Each room beckons you. From the foyer, you may choose your own adventure: explore the dining room? Ascend the swooping stairs? Pop into the kitchen? Or settle into the sunken living room? Gary leads the way to this last room, whose floor to ceiling windows blur the line between indoors and out. The cozy, light-filled space is reminiscent of a treehouse, and seems somehow built into the woods surrounding it. Elegant and earthy, the Austin limestone-clad fireplace is adorned with the soft glow of gold candlesticks glinting in the warm sunlight. Beside the hearth, a basket overflows with sumptuous blankets, ready for movie night. When designing a room, Jenn says, “You have to find the focal point. I start from there and build out.” The results, as her family, friends, and followers know, are breathtaking. While you could easily spend hours in the comfort of this sun-kissed retreat, the kitchen insists you visit, inviting you to sit a spell and take it all in. Here, golden, honey-dipped woods lovingly embrace white cabinetry. Black and gold appliances stand proudly, enticing you to sauté, bake, char. A pair of antique doors purported to hail from Egypt — though the couple admits they’re dubious — is flanked by glass front cabinetry showcasing collected treasures lovingly displayed and— “Is that a chair?” For, perched impossibly on the ledge above the home’s front door, sit two slipper chairs. There’s nary a stair or ladder in sight. Mike explains this amusing tableau with a grin: “Everyone’s always asking, ‘How do you get up there?’” His consistent, wry reply is this: “That’s where we eat breakfast.” The real answer? The fun-loving couple placed the chairs there as a joke. “Two years ago!” Jenn laughs. Happiness is woven into the fabric of the Todryk home. Jenn has created and curated a haven for her family and friends – and herself. When asked to pick a favorite room, the admitted homebody waffles, then says, “It’s probably my living room. Or dining room. I like the windows and I like the view and I like the woods. I like every room in my house.”

Mike, Jenn, and Gary

Harmony at Home Harmony at home: it is something we all strive to achieve. In my profession, I’ve had the opportunity to observe relationships breaking down. During those observations, I gained a deeper understanding about why relationships break down. I've seen the source. With every story I heard about why a relationship ended, I learned something. It only takes one person to end a relationship, but it takes two to keep it alive and thriving.

Before I outline my tips for a healthy relationship, which translates to more harmony at home, I want to emphasize that I am not perfect, and my relationships are not perfect. Marriage and relationships are work — hard work! No matter where you are in your relationship or marriage, don’t give up! Harmony is possible. Below, I outline some of my tips for creating or maintaining a healthy relationship.

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

ARTICLE BY JILL LOWE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

28

S ELF CA R E | PR OFESSIONAL S E RVI CE S

COMMUNICATION

HOBBIES

From my personal and professional experience, I believe communication is the key to a healthy relationship. However, communication is one of the biggest challenges in a relationship. We cannot assume the other person knows how we feel or why we feel a certain way or what is bothering us in the relationship. If we don’t communicate, then we cannot blame the other person for when the relationship breaks down. I believe communication is the foundation! In relationships, we should communicate about the biggest and smallest things; the good and the bad. Don’t just limit communication to the negative. Communicate about the positive things too. Don’t be afraid to ask the other person for help. We might not ask for help because we are afraid the other person may view us as weak, but in a relationship, everyone is on a team together. When one teammate is down or needs help, the other teammate should step in. Communication is the glue that holds relationships together.

I believe that for a couple to stay together, they must play together. Find a hobby you can do together, such as golf, tennis, fishing, or volunteering. This is especially important as the children grow older. Personally, I know it is hard to find a hobby to do with your spouse when the children’s activities take up most of the time. However, eventually, the children grow older, and one day they will graduate and move out of the home. So, make time today for a hobby — even if the hobby is playing video games together after the kids go to bed. It doesn’t matter what the hobby is, just find a hobby together.

PRIORITIES

COUNSELING Too often, when the marriage or relationship is breaking down, nobody consults with a therapist. From my perspective, this is a mistake. Don’t wait until the damage is done to consult with a therapist. Meet with a therapist early, when things are progressing down a path of destruction. A therapist can help with communication and assist you with getting the relationship back on the right track. If meeting with a therapist is not an option, try consulting with a pastor or a church leader. Consider counseling as an option before ending the relationship or marriage. The list of tips above may be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Just start somewhere; pick one to try. Harmony at home has a trickle-down effect. Not only does harmony improve our relationships, it also improves our own mental and physical health. Don’t underestimate the importance of living in harmony with each other!

It only takes one person to end a relationship, but it takes two to keep it alive and thriving.

From my perspective, I believe that in order for a marriage or a relationship to strengthen, grow, and flourish, the relationship must be a daily priority. I wear many hats, from a wife and a mother to an attorney. Despite all the hats I wear daily, I learned over time that my marriage and relationship with my daughter must be a greater priority than my job. That doesn’t mean my career is unimportant, but it does mean that I try to keep things balanced as best as possible. For a marriage to be healthy, the other person in the relationship must feel and know they are a priority. Create time together, from vacations without children to date nights or day dates. The date doesn’t have to be extravagant; it could even be just having coffee at home together without distractions. Elevate the relationship to a top priority.

SHAKESPEARE MCKINNEY 2023

ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBEKAH USSERY

“ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, AND ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN MERELY PLAYERS”

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE

Transport yourself back in time to late 16th century England under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I. A time when society was much more colorful and elaborate than previous periods. When theatrical festivals offered people an opportunity to escape the hardships of their daily lives and engage with their friends and neighbors in a fun and positive environment. Spectators came from afar to witness displays of comedy, drama and music. The popularity of English actor turned playwright, William Shakespeare, was on the rise. And the English language would never be the same. Shakespeare coined numerous phrases we still use today. Were you aware that "A wild goose chase" first appeared in “Romeo and Juliet”? Did you know “All that glitters is not gold” is from “The Merchant of Venice”? Or that “I will wear my heart upon my sleeve” is from “Othello”? William Shakespeare’s influence on society and language is immeasurable.

The Shakespeare McKinney festival provides residents and businesses with an opportunity to show their hearts of gold (“Henry V”) by supporting the local arts community, including theater, dance, music, and visual arts. This immersive experience is an incredible celebration of culture, creativity and community. Shakespeare McKinney is a nonprofit organization focused on collaborating with various performing and visual artists and arts organizations in a positive, supportive and inclusive environment where they can receive well-deserved recognition and reward. Experience Shakespeare's works and the artistry of days of old. Your worries will melt into thin air (“The Tempest”) as you enter the festival grounds at Adriatica Village in McKinney. Shakespeare’s work comes full circle (“King Lear”) through presentations, adaptations and modernized renditions of his repertoire performed on the Main Stage. The hard work and undeniable talent of local theatre companies, including Out of Line Concepts, Poor Yorick Productions, McKinney’s Young Actors Guild, and The Gorilla Theatre Players, will leave audiences in awe, and their talents will knock you dead as a doornail (“Henry VI”). These lesser-known yet passion-packed companies are sure to impress. There is no need to wait with bated breath (“The Merchant of Venice”) because the Shakespeare McKinney SideStage is jam-packed with classic entertainment. Music, dance and theatre covering multiple eras will delight audiences throughout the duration of the festival. The Peninsula Stage is reserved for student scholarship competitions. Students ranging from 11-18 years of age will display their talents in three categories: Shakespearean Monologue, Classic Scene Work and Improvisation. Knock knock! Who's there? (“Macbeth”) You'll encounter exceptional street performers and

visual artists lining the streets of the festival, sharing their gifts with attendees. The vendors will certainly be eaten out of house and home (“Henry IV, Part II”) by festival goers enjoying the variety of food truck options. Additionally, attendees will be able to peruse the vendor market in search of gifts and keepsakes. The youngest art lovers can spend all day in the gigantic Kids’ Zone. Kiddos ages 3-12 can challenge their skills on Ninja Nation's obstacle course, laugh themselves into stitches (“Twelfth Night”) on the fun inflatables, create original artwork in the craft tent, or fall in love with the animals in the petting zoo after getting into character with one of the fantastic face painters. Last year’s festival goers have not slept one wink (“Cymbeline”) in anticipation of this year’s epic event! Why anyone would choose not to join in on the fun is Greek to me (“Julius Caesar”). Shakespeare McKinney 2023 will take place on March 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Adriatica Village located at 6602 Mediterranean Drive in McKinney. For tickets or more information visit ShakespeareMcKinney.org. Shakespeare McKinney is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Community and corporate sponsorship opportunities are available.

Woodruff Windows Shines Through SAVING MONEY AND ENERGY, ONE WINDOW AT A TIME ARTICLE BY BLAINE MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZOE MARTIN

Replacing windows can be a significant concern for homeowners, especially when heat loss and drafts become prevalent. Old homes with metal frames and builder-grade windows are more susceptible to drafts and heat loss as the foundation settles and causes stress on the windows, leading to fogging, condensation, and difficulties opening and closing windows. These are issues that Woodruff Home Improvements often sees in aging homes across our area. “A neighborhood like Twin Creeks is a perfect example because the homes are old enough to where the foundation is starting to settle,” said Lyndol Woodruff. “This causes stress on those builder-grade windows, breaking the seals and letting the air through. And that's when you begin to see them fogging up.” Finding quality service for home improvement projects can be daunting for homeowners, but Woodruff Home Improvements is a company that specializes in window and siding installations and has been dedicated to providing topnotch customer service, high-quality products, and affordable prices for decades.

"We always lead with kindness. We always lead with honesty. It makes our job so much easier.” — Kristina Woodruff

Dallas native Keith Woodruff founded Woodruff Home Improvements in 1982. His father, Lyndol Hoyt “Woody” Woodruff, was a brick mason by trade and started a commercial construction company. Keith learned the values of precision and quality from his father – values still upheld by his son and daughter, Lyndol and Kristina Woodruff. “Our main focus is to make the home more comfortable and energy efficient, so the homeowner saves money on their energy bills,” Lyndol said. “The home's quieter and more comfortable because that energy-efficient glass muffles outside noise, making the home quieter.” The improvement in energy efficiency ultimately saves homeowners money on their energy bills and allows homes to preserve the temperature in the house. “A standard pane of glass is a 16th of an inch thick, and the insulated glass in our unit is an eighth of an inch thick. And there are two sets, so it's like four standard glass panes,” Lyndol said. “When the glass manufacturers build the two-pane unit, they pump argon gas between the panes of glass. Argon gas is seven times denser than air, so it can't penetrate through the glass when heat or cold hits the glass.”

Woodruff’s installers like Larry Cohorst, who has been with the company since 1997, and Miguel Breceda, who started with the Woodruffs in 1985, are specialists in their trade. They have been with the company for years, ensuring the work is of the highest quality without decreasing the home's natural light. “A new installation doesn’t eliminate the natural light. You still get natural light in the home, but it's the difference between wearing cheap sunglasses and polarized Ray-Bans because of the UV protection in the glass,” Lyndol said. “All the UV rays are reflected, preventing floors, artwork, and furniture from fading.” The Woodruffs are a family focused on putting Allen’s family first. They help create more comfortable living spaces and improve the overall value of the homes they serve. “We always lead with kindness. We always lead with honesty. It makes our job so much easier,” Kristina said. ”It doesn't feel like we're working, and it's more about creating a happy experience for people and helping with their energy bills.”

First Responder of the Month Justin Martinez — Fire Rescue Officer

Justin and his daughter, Layla

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY WALES An Allen resident, Justin Martinez always desired a career that would allow him to help people, but his career path wasn’t exactly straight. After attending college, Justin worked various jobs. It wasn’t until becoming a caregiver for his uncle who was battling cancer that he found his calling to become a fireman. In 2013, his cousin’s husband invited him on a ride along with his fire crew in Denton. Justin was hooked: "After that, I did everything I needed to do to get in shape and applied to Dallas.” Justin currently works as a Fire Rescue Officer with the Dallas Swift Water Fire Station. He has been with them for nine years. His station is called out for all types of rescues, but they are specially trained for water rescue. When asked his favorite part of his job, Justin didn't hesitate to say, "It's

when we actually get to use our training skills to really help someone, such as utilizing CPR to get a person stabilized for EMS.” Justin believes it's crucial for everyone to learn CPR, especially parents of small children. Alluding to the accident involving Damar Hamlin earlier this year, Justin said, “We all saw how important CPR was in saving the football player’s life.” Justin is a strong proponent of taking a CPR class. Allen Fire Department offers free CPR and Stop the Bleed classes. Advanced registration is required. Visit www.cityofallen.org for more information. MEALS MAKE IT HOME T HE

I MPORTA N CE

OF

D IN N E R

AT

T HE TA BLE

How important is family time to you? When I think about my early childhood, I remember wholesome TV shows like "Leave It to Beaver" and "The Brady Bunch." Something that still stands out in my memory are scenes of the families gathered around their dinner tables. Growing up, our family meals didn't look like an episode of "Leave It to Beaver." However, I knew that every Sunday we would have a roast dinner. My father would prepare the roast and potatoes, and my mother and sisters would do the rest. 20 years later, I still appreciate those Sunday dinners spent together. My love for cooking came from these dinners. I would help my dad or mom prep. Eventually, I began to experiment on my own with new recipes. Now that I am a mother, time in the kitchen with my children has become something I treasure. To me, food is love. It brings families, friends, and even colleagues together. It shows you want to take care of another individual and share your time and energy with them. Food brings people together. It unites us.

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT EATING DINNER AS A FAMILY HAS MANY BENEFITS. AMONG OTHERS, EATING DINNER TOGETHER: • Builds a child's self-esteem and shows you value time with them • Enables family members to handle daily stress better • Promotes sensible eating habits and portion control • Improves communication with one another, along with learning to listen to one another • Reduces unhealthy eating behaviors, substance abuse, and depression If you could have one hour a day where your entire family could sit down without distractions, talking face-to-face and eating a meal together, what would that be worth? You don't have to spend hours in the kitchen or shopping for groceries to make that vision a reality. You can have a fully-prepared meal made from scratch delivered right to your door. It arrives ready to go in the oven and takes away the guilt and stress of providing your family with a wholesome dinner. I know that life with multiple children and work schedules makes it difficult most days to find an hour to carve out time for a sit-down meal. In addition, having teenagers in sports and church groups along with a younger sibling makes it almost impossible to coordinate schedules. Yet, dinner time can be the best hour of our day when we prioritize it.

“FOOD I S LOV E . IT B RIN G S FAMIL IE S, F R I E N D S , A N D E V E N C OLLEAGUES TOG E THE R.” Providing a way for families to connect while eating a homemade meal is at the core of my business. I started Dinners by DeLaine to share my passion with others and to give families back the time they have missed at the dinner table. You may not have two hours to prep and cook a meal, but chances are you have 30 minutes to an hour to sit and eat one together a few times a week. Eating together is what matters — more than the preparation. I still believe in families cooking together regularly, but even as a chef I'll admit it's not always possible to make that happen multiple times a week. In starting my business, Dinners by DeLaine, I had a vision to bring families and friends together. I genuinely love feeding people. I love seeing them enjoy something they have never eaten before. Providing meals for others is about making time for families. Food isn't just what I do — it's a part of who I am. It is my passion, and sharing it with others brings me pure joy.

Nonprofit of the Month HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF COLLIN COUNTY

ARTICLE BY ALISA HAUSER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBEKAH USSERY

Habitat for Humanity is a global, nonprofit housing organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing worldwide. Habitat Collin County supports this mission at the local level and brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

A HAND UP, NOT A HANDOUT Habitat families work alongside volunteers in the building of their homes. They take financial education classes and pay a needs-based mortgage. Through home ownership, Habitat families achieve long-term financial security which helps create stability and independence, giving them a foundation for a better life in addition to a safe and secure place to call home. This has a ripple effect in the community, as improved housing increases access to education, reduces health risks, and creates jobs.

LOCAL COMMUNITIES

NOT JUST BRICK AND MORTAR

Volunteers who help build homes gain a sense of satisfaction and pride while helping their neighbors and making a difference in the community. This is certainly true for Marketing Director Joe Overley who has a 20-year partnership with Habitat. He began as a volunteer, but recently became an employee. He recalls his first build: “We got to meet the family we were supporting, and it was so impactful to see how real, how personal, and how important the work is.” Cox, too, has been with Habitat for 20 years. “What keeps me here are the families — watching babies grow up and do so well, attending graduations and weddings … it’s very rewarding work.” Habitat Collin County helps people in need and strengthens communities by creating a brighter future for all. Cox adds with a proud smile, “It’s all because of a house.”

The organization does more than build homes, they change communities through positive relationships. “It’s not just brick, mortar, and 2x4s,” says Cox, “We bring communities together.”

Volunteering for Habitat Collin County jobs is easy, simply visit https://habitatcollincounty.org/volunteer/ to create your volunteer profile and see the calendar of events.

Habitat Collin County currently has two projects under construction: Cotton Groves, a 35-home project in McKinney, and a five-home project in Princeton. McKinney is the site of a new, sustainable, and eco-conscious community, the first and only location in the world implementing shipping container construction. “We decided to try it because it’s innovative and green,” says CEO, Celeste Cox, “We reuse materials, install solar panels, and use spray foam insulation which is very energy efficient.” There are currently six container homes under construction. Among the biggest needs for the next 29 homes are sponsors for the home builds, sponsors for solar panels, and welders.

BBQ CHICKEN CRESCENT ROLLS

BRUSCHETTA POTATO CRISPS

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix together 3 tablespoons of melted butter and 1 minced garlic clove. Set aside. Preheat a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add in 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1/4 cup of thinly sliced red onion. Sauté onion until lightly browned. Stir in 1/4 cup of BBQ sauce, 2 cooked, shredded chicken breasts, and 1/2 teaspoon of Creole seasoning. Remove from heat. Open a can of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls and separate into 16 triangles. Place 1 tablespoon of the chicken mixture in the center of each triangle. Fold the short corners of the dough over the filling and wrap the long end around the sides. Pinch the corners together to seal — filling may not be completely enclosed. Place each finished pastry 2 inches apart. Brush each pastry with garlic butter and bake for 17-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve with pickles and BBQ sauce for dipping.

Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice 2 large Russet potatoes into 1/4 inch rounds. Toss with 1 tablespoon of virgin olive oil until lightly coated. Spread in a single layer on baking sheet, spacing 1/2 inch apart. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until spotted golden brown. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, gently mix 2 garlic cloves (minced), 1/2 cup fresh basil (minced), 2 cups grape tomatoes (diced), 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon balsamic glaze, 1 ripe avocado (diced), and 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon salt, to taste. Once potatoes are baked, transfer them to a platter and use a spoon to top each crisp with bruschetta mixture. Enjoy immediately!

Ulani Phillips — Lovejoy High School STUDENT OF THE MONTH ARTICLE BY ALISA HAUSER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATINA HALL Ulani Phillips has a sunny disposition with a sparkle in her eyes that matches her heart. The name Ulani means “cheerful,” which perfectly fits her personality. The youngest of five, together the first letters of the siblings’ names spell J-E-S-U-S. Their family is close, the kind of closeness that comes from being forged in the fire. When Ulani was 13, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. “Ulani sat with me and encouraged me to eat, saying, ‘Here Mom, try this!’ She was so supportive.” Ulani understands the importance of delighting in the little things like going to Whataburger with her cheer squad after games or having special “eat all the fun cereals for dinner” nights with her mom. “She’s the sweetest,” says her mom, “She just skips through life.” But don’t mistake her sweetness for weakness. Being a competitive cheerleader requires determination and dedication, strong physical and mental strength, and the ability to stay laser focused. “‘Cheer’ the series accurately describes how rigorous the sport is,” explains Ulani. A self-proclaimed introverted extrovert, she gives her all on the field, but needs time alone to recharge afterwards. “I definitely have a social battery that needs to be recharged after performing.” What’s next for Ulani? Every year during Spring Break, the family visits the same resort in Cozumel that they’ve frequented for years. When people ask them why they return to the same place over and over, they say it’s because they’ve made friends with the staff — they all know each other by name and keep in touch with each other throughout the year. “We’ve become like family!” She’s also gearing up for her last year as a varsity cheerleader. “Two years ago, Lovejoy’s Cheer Team won 3rd in UIL, and this year we won 2nd, so next year we’re aiming for 1st!” What She’s Watching: New Girl Who She’s Following: Lily Chee Have a nomination for Student of the Month?
