I
am at a loss to describe the women I have encountered in my life. Women have driven me to be the woman I am, in fact made me who I am. The women who you will encounter on these pages are the women we all strive to be. The CEO. The leader who has given her life to education and strived beyond every obstacle to be who she is. The mother that chose to have the baby regardless of circumstances. The woman that is an entrepreneur that built her business from the ground up, fighting against all the odds of her circumstances. The woman that is an artist and believed in her vision to change how we see the world; she presents a vision through her eyes in the hope that our eyes can see her perspective. We as women strive to be all of these women: to be independent, strong, reliant upon ourselves, to know who we are and believe in that. We forever want to be the mother, the leader and the strength of our home, community and business. We are forever driven by or hearts and minds. We are the center of the home and the CEO of the company. We are women that excel to the greatest of heights, but never forget our hearts. The corporate world can be overtaken, but the home is never as easily overtaken. That is where the heart meets the road. There is always a balance between heart and home. We as women make our choices. We struggle between right and wrong to raise our families and be business women, to be who society has called us to be. The bottom line is we are needed to be leaders in the home and leaders in the office. Choose who you are and move forward. We are not meant to be the same, we are as all human beings meant to carry out our own destiny.

Her delicate, complex pieces evoke a sense of both past and present, and the joyful energy that she infuses into her creations is easily appreciated. Largely influenced by the shapes and patterns of the natural world, she incorporates precious and semi-precious stones, found and re-purposed objects, and a variety of organic shapes to create jewelry that is truly a work of fine art. KIT CRAMER
President & CEO, Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce
It may take a village to raise a child, but in Asheville, it takes Kit Cramer to run the village. Her resume is astoundingly lengthy, a dizzying list that culminates in her current position as President & CEO of our Chamber of Commerce. Over the past six years, Cramer has settled into Asheville, but her definition of “settling” includes working tirelessly at the forefront of our revitalization. “I am so thrilled with what we’ve accomplished in terms of job growth here,” she says. “I love this place. It feeds my desire to be impactful in a community, and it feeds my soul too.” Cramer’s work has coincided with a time that’s proven particularly fortuitous for women. “Frankly, I didn’t realize I was the first female president of chamber,” she says. “There’s some girl power going on, which is great,” she continues, pointing out the various offices recently held for the first

DR. MEGAN SCHULER, D.M.D., M.S.D. Orthodontist, Blue Ridge Orthodontics
Asheville’s a city of transplants these days, and that includes in the realm of woman leaders. Dr. Megan Schuler of Blue Ridge Orthodontics, a transplant herself, recognizes the untold benefits of such a migration. “Asheville is growing exponentially, so a lot of people and a lot of females have come to the area, and with the growth the city attracts new people with new perspectives,” she says with her signature smile. It’s that smile that inspired her entire career and, in many ways, her move. “I was one of those really shy kids that was incredibly self-conscious,” she remembers. “Braces really

huge change in my personality. I loved the entire experience. So I decided in 8th grade I wanted to be an orthodontist.” With unrivaled tenacity, Schuler saw that dream through. And when, after completing years of school and training, she discovered a new dream—moving to our mountain town—she made that come true, too.
Q&A
Fostering big dreams is Schuler’s approach to life, and her advice to aspiring women. “Dream big, but then break up your big goals into smaller pieces. Focus on the smaller piece at hand, then the next small goal, then you’ll look back and see that you’ve really changed everything.”
1. What would you tell your 20-year-old self? Have a little bit more fun! 2. What's one thing you can't live without? My puppy! 3. What's one source of daily inspiration? Being able to come to work and knowing I’m going to make someone feel good.

DENISE PESCE
Principal, The Mountain Community School (By Terri Kelly)
Few fifth graders are certain about their future; Denise Pesce was the exception. Growing up in Chicago, she had a zest for learning yet never felt inspired by her instructors. She remembers great teachers as well as teachers who mocked kids. Both examples influenced her decision to become a teacher. “I remember thinking—I’m going to do this better than they’re doing.” Pesce taught middle school for nine years, earned her master’s, and became an assistant principal in a community known for their crazy-love of the Chicago White Sox. But something was missing. Pesce asked the superintendent, “Just give me a little school.” Instead, they promoted her to Curriculum and Technology Director. Next, she moved to Florida to work with the administrative teams of a school for the handicapped and a Montessori school. Then Pesce moved her family to Asheville

The doctor performs the operation personally, and because he’s been a head and neck surgeon for 25 years, he has a deep understanding of the facial structure, including nerves and the skeleton. Patients interested in Ultherapy first go into the office for a personal consultation with Dr. Pate. On the day of the procedure, Dr. Pate sets aside an entire morning or afternoon to spend with the patient so that the procedure is never rushed. Ultherapy can be used on the face, neck and décolletage. Dr. Pate also points out that it’s the perfect procedure for men, whose thicker facial skin is difficult to work with in other procedures (especially facelifts). It’s a great optionfor the businessman or businesswoman, who doesn’t have the opportunity for downtime and wants a subtle, seamless freshening up. “It requires a bit of patience to see the final result, but it does work,” Dr. Pate promises. Preventing aging might still be the stuff of fairytales, but with Ultherapy, magic is almost a reality.

n a brisk winter's day, mother and daughter duo Cindy and Kaitlyn swept into Scout Boutique in
Biltmore Village with a gust of wind. Their nervous smiles were met with the firm handshakes of a professional stylist, makeup artist, hair stylist, and the boutique’s owner. The four chic women hovered over the pair, scissors and brushes whirling in a colorful frenzy, and out emerged two transformed ladies. Cindy and Kaitlyn’s makeover was incredibly metamorphic not only in their physicality, but in their auras. The mother and daughter glowed with confidence, their apprehensive, close-mouthed smiles replaced with delighted, bold grins.

M A R I S O L TO M Á S , THERAPEUTIC IMAGE CONSULTANT, SOL REFLECTION A makeover is more than just a new look. It may include makeup, a change in hairstyle and a new outfit or two, but more importantly, it’s a therapeutic experience. One that provokes a feeling beyond exterior changes and delves into the very soul. The first thing I consider when approaching a makeover is my client’s current look and habits, and then hopes, wants and needs. Often woven into this initial conversation are comments about lacking direction and feelings about self-worth and self-expression, such as the “I could never wear that” mentality. Through the makeover process, internal blocks or attachments to old ideas are gently nudged toward new and innovative concepts. Incorporating what is easy and familiar to the new style is part of the refining process. Once we open a space for the client to feel comfortable and freely express their hopes, possibility and excitement emerges. Minds and hearts open to receiving an experience that is simple, easy and even fun! Take, for example, our experience with Cindy and Kaitlyn. Throughout our day of exploration and self-care, they began to realize the simplicity of these changes. Instead of being transformed into someone else, they felt like more vibrant versions of themselves. The benefits of a makeover like this one are innumerable. Here are just a few:
CONFIDENCE
Throughout the course of the makeover, it becomes clear how simple it can be to create a new look. With a new sense of ease, a couple of tips and tricks, and a pair of perfect fitting pants (of course), anyone can look their best! Seeing that version of yourself in the mirror can be a huge confidence boost, that day and moving forward.
C R E AT I V I T Y
Once you are taught how to match a good pair of pants with a few nice shirts, you start to see easy outfit combinations you didn’t notice before, in stores and in your own closet. It becomes fun to play around with your newfound sense of style.
P L AY F U L N E S S
You don’t need to look weird or wild to have fun with clothes. After watching a stylist create new looks, it suddenly seems normal. Adding a bright pop of color or your grandmother’s favorite

pin to your jacket can make getting dressed like a fun art project. The best part of a makeover is that noBODY is excluded! Everyone has something to offer, some creative expression to share with the world. Through clarifying desires, barriers and then visioning possibility, the beauty that is held on the inside can be clearly reflected on the outside.
