D
uring our planning for the Men's Issue this year (which, I'll be honest, began last year), we had a million ideas for how to make this issue impactful. As we began to narrow down the list, we realized we wanted to highlight some men who were not only deeply invested in Asheville, but were also on the cutting edge of making it better.
Of course, we couldn't go without highlighting an awesome guy's night out, something I need to do more of myself! A Men's Issue would be nothing without a slick new car, and we took ZZ Top's advice that every girl is indeed crazy about a sharp dressed man and spoke to some fellows who can help us all out in that department. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

SOME LIKE IT JOHN ALMAGEUR'S ART OF GLASSBLOWING
WITH EVERY BREATH: HOW GLASSBLOWING WORKS
Hot
“Glassblowing is basically taking a puddle of lava and turning it into art,” says Almaguer. The process begins when he uses a steel blow pipe to grab a mass of molten glass, or “gather,” from a furnace at nearly 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. He then rolls the glass on a steel table called a marver to form a rough cylindrical shape and blows into the pipe to give the piece volume. Almaguer then takes the piece to the “glory hole,” another furnace used to keep the glass at a workable temperature. He’ll return there many times as he blows any secondary bubbles, adds color with glass powders and bars, or shapes the work with shears and tweezers on his bench. “It’s constantly moving, the same temperature as the inside of a volcano, and you can never touch it with your hands,” says Almaguer. “It’s a crazy medium.” Once he’s generally satisfied with the shape, Almaguer creates the opening of the piece by transferring the glass from the blow pipe to a solid rod called a punty. After further tweaking, he knocks the piece off the punty and transfers it to an annealing oven, where the glass is slowly cooled to prevent cracking. Finally, Almaguer carves and grinds the cold glass to reach a finished product. June 2017 | Asheville Lifestyle

n Asheville, we’re expanding our horizons— both literally and figuratively. Our city is
stretching and growing, as are the souls who inhabit it, as we welcome new industries and new ideas and turn this sleepy mountain town into a Southern hub. As part of our Second Annual Men’s Issue, we had the opportunity to sit down with Glenn Wilcox, John McKibbon and Peter Pollay. Together, these three men are remaking an Asheville icon. It began on the courthouse steps in 1987. The BB&T building, with a sagging facade and dilapidated interior, was on the auction block. Local Glenn Wilcox and a group of nine other investors purchased the historic building. “My oldest son Wallace and I stood on the courthouse steps and made a bid, and nobody upset it, so we ended up with it!” Wilcox remembers. “The first 10 years were pretty tough, but I’m so thankful.” CONTINUED >

These gentlemen, whose hands are as familiar with the smooth and rough grains of hardwood as they are with their own skin, sit around an—of course—wooden table, situated outside an endeavor all their own, a new wood shop to rival that of the finest in the country. As each man introduces himself and his passion for woodworking, patterns emerge, stories unfold, and jokes are tossed around with ease. Most of them found woodworking as children, whether in bible school projects or as a so-called side-hustle. Carlos, perhaps the most passionate woodworker of the group who donated his extensive shop to Givens upon his arrival 11 years ago, has been crafting for decades (as have most of his compatriots). “Well, I started with a vibrating jigsaw when I was 8 or 9 years old,” he says, describing the match holders—shaped like cats with open mouths to hold the tinder—he’d create with his sister. ike so many of us familiar with the photos of
a forgotten era, I was very curious to experience Cuba firsthand.
I had the opportunity to experience the island
recently when American Airlines launched its inaugural non-stop flight from Charlotte to Havana. It was a quick, jam-packed visit filled with the food, music and culture of the tiny island nation, a place filled with wonderful and unique people anxious to welcome American tourists. From the iconic and colorful vintage cars lining the streets, to the cobblestone plazas, to the traditional nightclub entertainment, there is something for everyone during a visit to Cuba. Here are my top reasons to visit Cuba as soon as possible! NO CROWDS More and more tourists will start to flock to the island as restrictions are lifted. The time to go is now, before the country changes to accommodate all the visitors with an influx of hotels and resorts that alter the authentic landscape. RUM AND CIGARS Cuba is known for both rum and cigars, and no visit there is complete without a tour of a cigar factory or tobacco plantation to understand the country’s economy. Cuban rum is world-renowned and visitors can indulge in the ubiquitous mojito or daiquiri at every turn. A TREASURE TROVE OF CULTURE Cubans love their music, art and dance, and it surrounds every visitor. Whether it’s a local jazz musician or an opera house, a dance troupe or colorful street murals, a local street artist or fine art gallery, the creative senses are all heightened during a trip to Cuba. THE CARS If you love old cars, the streets of Havana are the place to go. In surprisingly good condition, the vintage 1950s cars are kept running by enterprising locals who pride themselves on keeping these vintage wheels in rolling. A taxi ride in a convertible should be on every visitor’s bucket list. THE PEOPLE Engaging and spirited, the Cuban people’s hospitality is often the reason visitors love their Cuban vacation. They are diverse, friendly and genuine, and the experience of meeting them is unforgettable.

COUNTRYSIDE, SMALL TOWNS AND BEACHES While Havana invites the headlines, it’s the beautiful, green landscape of the countryside that leads visitors to smaller towns with quiet cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. White sand beaches line the coastline, and resorts there provide welcome rest and relaxation after touring the bigger cities. There are areas of rainforest, mountain ranges, waterfalls and more to explore in this tiny nation. HISTORY Cuba boasts nine UNESCO world heritage sites, places that are protected and preserved because of their special cultural or historical significance. The country’s history is interesting and relevant, and visiting provides a greater understanding of the events and how they unfolded. If you’re curious about Cuba, now is the perfect time to go. Keep in mind, this is no ordinary vacation: there are still policies about travel there that must be understood and followed. A good travel professional can put together a cross-cultural, people-to-people program that meets state department regulations, taking the headache of visas and health insurance requirements out of your hands to let you enjoy the experience of this dynamic culture and country. e’ve all heard of girl’s night out, outings peppered with wine glasses and high heels—but what about guy’s night out? Sometimes a gentleman just
needs a stiff drink and a good meal with his compatriots by his side. These are nights of mirth and debate and, occasionally, debauchery, with the staccato clink of glasses and the rounded curl of laughter a welcome soundtrack. WHAT MAKES A WELL-DRESSED MAN? If anyone in Asheville knows, it’s the gentlemen behind Joseph A. Banks.
