LOCAL DEPUTY SAVES COUPLE Kudos to Columbia County deputy Chris Adkins! Recently Chris received a dispatch that a resident called in saying, he could hear someone behind his house calling for help. Due to Chris’ ingenuity and former experience with the DNR, he realized that the home backed up to the river. Chris wondered if someone was possibly stranded on the river. Chris realized they were probably going to need a boat, so he called DNR to come out. Isaiah and Shaquinna White had been kayaking and tipped over. Isaiah reported that his wife was suffering from hypothermia, Chris scooped her out of the water and he and Isaiah carried her to safety, where local EMS was waiting to take over. Thank you deputy Chris for your great service to our community.

Use The Right Soil Different flowers have different soil requirements. Make sure you check what soil will fit your plants' needs best.

C A P T U R I NG T H E HOM E 22
Augusta Lifestyle | April 2021
DON LECHNER, A REAL ESTATE AGENT IN THE AUGUSTA AREA, SHARES WHAT SEPARATES HIM FROM OTHER REAL ESTATE AGENTS.
“ONE THING THAT I DO OFFER THAT SEPARATES ME FROM OTHER REALTORS IS THAT I’VE BEEN DOING REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR FIVE YEARS. I already know a lot of the ins and outs of what to look for and how to present a home,” says Don, a real estate agent with Summer House Realty. “My advantage is that I’ve been on both sides of the camera. In front as a realtor listing, showing, and selling homes; behind the camera making things look good for the seller and buyer. Therefore, combining two different perspectives.” Don is one of only a handful who does both real estate and real estate photography in the CSRA. He has worked with photography for over thirty years with various projects but five years ago he became a real estate photographer. A benefit from that is he already knows what’s coming to the market before it’s officially listed.

CAPTURING THE HOME (CONTINUED)
Don was previously a graphic artist for corporations developing their ideas visually until the businesses changed how they were doing proposals. He found himself seeking work when his nephew called him. “I was looking for work and Joe [Don’s nephew] was looking for a photographer.” They decided to work together and Don would photograph and edit photos with him. What sets Don apart from other real estate photographers is his knowledge of how to best showcase a home. He uses a minimalistic point of view where less is better. “You don’t want clutter at all. When I go in, whatever catches my eye, I get rid of it. My concept is, if my eye is drawn to it, others are as well.” Don refers to items in the home as ‘Drama Babies’, meaning that whatever it may be, it might be cute, but it’s ‘crying out’ taking attention away from the room. It’s best to put away personal things and if you desire a decorated home, to hire an interior decorator. While Don mostly photographs large, luxurious homes, he also has a passion for older homes. “There are some really beautiful homes. The old homes I just really enjoy doing. I just did one in Edgefield where George Washington stayed at the place. The first house where he had stayed had burned down and they built a house right on it and I photographed it. It was built in the 1800s and it’s just absolutely gorgeous. That’s probably my favorite, getting into the history part.” Another reason Don likes to shoot older homes is because his family’s farmhouse was built in the 1800s. If you are interested in having your home photographed or in need of a real estate agent, you can reach Don by calling (706)294-9992 or email Don@SummerHouseRealty.com

LEARN THE HISTORY BEHIND WILLIE JEWELL'S AND MEET THE NEW OWNER YOU’VE HEARD OF WILLIE JEWELL’S OLD SCHOOL BAR-B-Q BUT HAVE YOU HEARD THE STORY BEHIND IT? Miss Jewell was a 16 year old girl with no home and no means. The Adeeb Family rescued her off the streets and offered her a job at their Green Turtle Restaurant and later, Bono’s Pit Bar-B-Q in Jacksonville, Florida. They learned quickly that she could cook almost anything. Willie Jewell would change their lives forever. She was not only an amazing cook but she had an immeasurable heart. Ms. Jewell passed some time ago, but her legend still lives on through Willie Jewell’s Old School Bar-B-Q. 26

The new owners of the Augusta location, Jimmy and Lena Farhat, are excited to be here and share a few new things coming for the restaurant. Jimmy already has a history with barb-q and came here from Jacksonville, Florida where he was a manager at Bono’s Pit Bar-B-Q. With his great management skills, he was transferred here to beautiful Augusta, Georgia. “We are going to start having consistent sides,” says Jimmy. “Lima beans, black eyed peas, even sweet potato mash. We’ll have them on certain days so our clientele will know ‘Hey let’s go there Monday or let’s go there Friday for the fried shrimp.’” Their fried shrimp is also new to the menu, available now as a special on Fridays.

Benefits of a
chemical-free home
HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.
ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER
If you have sensitive skin, you might start by taking inventory of your beauty and personal care products to see what you can replace. To get you started, here are three DIY products that you can make yourself for your chemical-free home.

DIY Scented Body Moisturizer Just like a new candle can brighten your day, a shimmery scented lotion can make you feel like a queen. The only problem is all of the artificial fragrances, alcohols, dyes, and other chemicals that your skin is absorbing from that bottle. There are some cleaner options such as unscented lotions, but that's a lot less fun. This DIY moisturizer allowed you to customize your own scent while still treating your skin the best you can. The key ingredient? Olive oil! Yes, any bottle of olive oil from your kitchen works. Pour some in a smaller bottle and add several drops of your favorite essential oils. Olive oil is super hydrating, feels great, and will make you question why you ever used lotion in the first place. Plus it's safe for your whole body. Just be mindful of the essential oils you choose. Some types—such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oils—cause a cooling effect and can feel uncomfortable if it gets on your face or other sensitive areas.
DIY Counter Cleaner: Safe for Granite + Marble! You probably know that vinegar is a great natural cleaner for most surfaces. Unfortunately, it can be pretty damaging to delicate countertops made from granite or marble. Here's a DIY cleaning spray that's safe for any type of counters you have!
Ingredients + Rubbing alcohol + Dish soap
+ Essential Oils + Water
Directions In a plastic or glass spray bottle, mix one part alcohol with one part water. Add several drops of dish soap and whichever essential oils you would like to add for your desired scent. Shake it up each time you use it as the ingredients will tend to separate. Although it's natural and safe, still avoid spraying directly on your skin as the alcohol and dish soap can dry you out.

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.
Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils
Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.
