AROUND TOWN

BELLEVUE IS THE REGION'S SECOND FASTESTGROWING NEIGHBORHOOD Just behind South Lake Union, Bellevue has recently become the region's second

fastest-growing

neighborhood.

Downtown Bellevue's population has grown by more than 5,200 from 2010 to 2017, a 73 percent jump. The increase can be drawn back to the zoning that has allowed for multifamily housing to expand in the downtown area. The new apartment towers allow for a population density of 18,000 people per square mile, equal to South Lake Union's density. Source: The Seattle Times, Gene Balk

BELLEVUE MEDICAL IMAGING INTRODUCES SMARTCURVE MAMMOGRAMS Bellevue Medical Imaging clinic is the only one in the Bellevue/Kirkland region with this new technology (and one of the first facilities in the U.S., too)—a huge win for women in the area. Fear of physical discomfort is the No. 1 reason women say they have never had a mammogram. The SmartCurve system has been proven to improve comfort in 93 percent of women who reported moderate to severe discomfort with standard compression. It features a curved compression surface that mirrors the shape of a woman's breast to reduce pinching and allow uniform compression over the entire breast. Call Bellevue Medical Imaging at 425.454.1700 to set up your appointment today.

BRAVERN FASHION WEEK RETURNS TO DOWNTOWN BELLEVUE SEPT. 14-16 Bravern Fashion Week celebrates the anniversary of The Shops at The Bravern. Held in the heart of Downtown Bellevue at 11111 NE Eighth St., the signature event gives guests unparalleled access to the best of Pacific Northwest and international fashion. Bellevue Fashion Week includes an opening party, a runway show, designer shopping and industry talks. For more information, visit BravernFashionWeek.com. 16

ARTIST’S PALETTE

BLAIR’S YEAR

I N FA S H I O N ARTICLE EARL BENJAMIN

LOT CAN HAPPEN IN ONE YEAR. Last September, artist Blair Breitenstein inspired the Bellevue community with her compelling fashion illustrations and story in our 2017 fashion issue. The artist grew up on Mercer Island, and her closest friends are people she has known since middle school. “It seems like a lot of families stay on Island for decades," Blair says. "That friend group and I still meet over holidays there. It was also convenient to be so close to Bellevue and Seattle. Being a girl that is greatly influenced by the city, I got the best of both worlds.” Drawing inspiration from fashion photography, her illustrations exude a distinct vintage feel of ‘60s and ‘70s beauty. Blair’s work has been featured in top fashion Drawn for Moschino with Mac 18

FALL IS AN ANTICIPATED TIME OF YEAR IN THE FASHION WORLD. And while fast trends hit the runway and our department stores, a new divergent trend has surfaced: reflecting sustainable, authentic, classic and timeless themes. While technology and media make us feel like life is on warp speed, fashion is emerging a polar story of a different pace—slow has never been so chic. The New York Times tells us designers, even those at the largest fashion houses, like Alessandro Michele, designer of Gucci, commented, “Resist the mantra of speed that violently leads to losing oneself. Resist the illusion of something new at any cost.” That’s a message is being echoed in a new generation of designers and consumers. Moorea Seal and Pipe and Roe are just a couple of local boutiques that offer slow fashion brands as well as local designers that are doing it right when it comes to the sustainable-fashion movement. In case you're not even sure where to start, this season's Bellevue Lifestyle shoot captures the art of timeless and slow fashion with warm fall colors, classic clothing styles and ethical fabrics. Raw and natural elements are part of our PNW culture, so we opted outside and utilized wild and bold florals. We challenge you to take time to slow down and take stock of where your wardrobes are and where you want them to be through the lens of slow fashion. And don't worry—we're not trying to shame you for indulging in a fast-fashion buy every once in a while. Instead, we’re just offering a new way of looking at your closet and reminding to occasionally ask yourself where your clothes come from and why.

OWN THE HOUR LOCAL WATCH BRAND HODINA BRINGS MINIMALIST DESIGNS TO BELLEVUE

AFTER LAUNCHING ITS FIRST PROTOTYPE IN 2014, HODINA, A LOCAL WATCH COMPANY BASED OUT OF BELLEVUE AND BORN OF A FAMILY TRADE, HAS GROWN INTO A THRIVING, MODERN-MINIMALISTIC LIFESTYLE BRAND. Founder Vadim Bozhko, the youngest of five, moved to the US with his parents and siblings from Ukraine before he was even a year old. Escaping persecution for the chance of a better life, Vadim’s family settled into their new home in the Pacific Northwest, and his father, Vladimir, opened a watch repair shop in 1995, which is still running today. Raised on traditional values emphasizing hard work, drive and passion, Vadim also developed a keen sense of perspective from his parents’ heartrending stories of oppression in Ukraine. “They experienced a lot of horrendous things,” he says, “and it’s really given me a deep gratitude for what I have now.” As his older siblings pursued other ventures, it didn’t seem likely that anyone in the family would take interest in the nostalgic legacy of watch repair. Even when Vadim first approached the idea of making watches, his father wasn’t too sure about the whole minimalistic approach to design. “He has more of the engineering, business mindset,” he explains, “but now he gets it and he’s really excited and proud of what we’re doing.” Vadim and his father still work closely together, conferring on ideas and business practices. Vadim’s wife, Dasha, is also involved in the business, and with an expanding product line, the couple is excited to see what’s next for Hodina.

ONE “THE BIGGER THE BETTER” Oversized statement coats are everywhere this fall. Whether it is faux fur, shearling or a bright color or pattern, these coats will be putting the wow factor in your outfit this season. | TWO “TEAM SPIRIT” Athletic-inspired basics, T-shirts and sweaters are sporty but chic. They can make any outfit unexpectedly and effortlessly cool. | THREE “THE ‘80S” Electric hues, vintage plaids, bold polka dots, and my personal favorite, over-the-top shoulder details, will be incorporated heavily in your wardrobe this fall. Just be sure to pare down the rest of your outfit with a high-waisted skinny or classic denim style to bring this decade into the modern world. | FOUR “AMERICAN FRONTIERLAND” Think of this trend as Little House on the Prairie meets the Wild West. Desert tones are paired with dramatic draping and billowing silhouettes. You’ll also see more feminine pieces featuring dainty floral prints. | FIVE “URBAN SAFARI” A more utilitarian safari-chic look brings functional fashion back on the map. Pockets, buttons and buckles strategically placed on garments give this trend some wearability. Unexpected colorways of camouflage and leopard make this trend feel fresh and new.

LOCAL’S CHOICE

Local Nonprofit Spreads Awareness of Youth Poverty in Bellevue BELLEVUE LIFESPRING PROVIDES CLOTHING, FOOD AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO THE CITY’S UNDERPRIVILEGED ARTICLE BRITTANY EISEMAN

BELLEVUE LIFESPRING IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES SUPPORT TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES FIGHTING POVERTY IN THE BELLEVUE SCHOOL DISTRICT. More than 3,600 children are fighting poverty in the affluent Bellevue area. This is something that the executive director of Bellevue Lifespring, Jennifer Fischer, wants the community to know. WHAT IS BELLEVUE LIFESPRING’S MISSION? Bellevue Lifespring’s mission is to support children and families in the Bellevue community by fostering stability and self-sufficiency through programs that feed, clothe and educate. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING INVOLVED WITH BELLEVUE LIFESPRING? Hands down the best part of my job at Bellevue Lifespring is when I receive emails and letters of success stories from the children and families I have worked with. I love to see a child or family come in, utilize all of the resources we offer at Bellevue Lifespring and really turn their lives around—it truly warms my heart! TELL US ABOUT UNCORK THE NIGHT. Uncork the Night is Bellevue Lifespring’s largest fundraising event of the year. This fundraiser invites guests to taste a variety of local and rare global wines while spreading the love at the live and silent auctions. The entire evening centers around the spirit of giving and takes place on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue. Make sure to reserve your tickets now at BellevueLifespring.org. 56

Keller Williams Bellevue just celebrated

20 years serving our community!

Each quarter we strive to focus on a project to benefit our neighborhoods. Red Day, our most recent event, gave us the opportunity to volunteer at Jubilee Reach to assist in the maintenance of their facility and to support the Jubilee Reach Thrift Store. Currently, we are running our annual backpack drive in conjunction with Congregations for Kids with the goal to raise $5,000 and donate 100 backpacks.
